    Description: Although laser cutting of metals is a well-established process, there is considerable potential for improvement with regard to various requirements for the manufacturing industry. First, this potential is identified and then it is shown how improvements could be made using machine learning. For this purpose, a database was generated. It contains the process parameters, RGB images, 3D point clouds and various quality features of almost 4000 cut edges.

    Description: This work presents a real-time dynamic pricing framework for future electricity markets. Deduced by first-principles analysis of physical, economic, and communication constraints within the power system, the proposed feedback control mechanism ensures both closed-loop system stability and economic efficiency at any given time. The resulting price signals are able to incentivize competitive market participants to eliminate spatio-temporal shortages in power supply quickly and purposively.

    Description: Especially pedestrians rely on the interaction with other road users. The introduction of automated driving systems withdraws this communication from drivers and thus, vehicles need to interact with pedestrians. Therefore, multiple vehicle-pedestrian-communication concepts are evaluated. A driver intention prediction allows pedestrians to learn these newly introduced signals, while driver and vehicle communicate simultaneously.

    Description: The proposed method for the configuration of renewably powered energy supply systems as isolated grids backed by energy storage technology and based on statistical models shows the economic viability of such a system. The energy supply system was configured by implementing cost models using an optimization software. Validation was achieved through comparison with measurements taken from two different existing energy supply areas.

    Description: To keep up with the ever-increasing data transmission speed needs, data center interconnects are scaling up to provide multi-Tbit/s connectivity. These links require a high number of WDM channels, while the associated transceivers should be compact and energy efficient. Scaling the number of channels, however, is still limited by the lack of adequate optical sources. In this book, we investigate novel chip-scale frequency comb generators as multi-wavelength light sources for Tbit/s WDM links.

    Description: High-temperature superconductors have distinct advantages compared to conventional conductors. Below their critical temperature, superconductors have immeasurably low ohmic losses. To maintain the superconducting state, superconductors require constant cooling.     Description: Powerline communications utilize the existing energy distribution network for information transmission. In this work, the low voltage grid is investigated as a transmission channel for frequencies up to 500 kHz. Based on characterizing the channel with regard to its cyclostationary properties, novel adaptive transmission methods are developed. The presented methods are evaluated under realistic channel conditions.

    Description: This work presents the development and application of high-speed fluorescent thermal imaging for quench analysis in high-temperature superconductors (HTS). Using a fluorescent coating, with a temperature-dependent light emission, temperature changes can be calculated over 2D surfaces. The technique uncovered peculiar transient effects in novel HTS tape architectures and also helped to verify and better understand hot spot development in both insulated and non-insulated, HTS–wound pancake coils.

    Description: LiDAR (Light detection and ranging) represents one of the key technologies for autonomous driving. For this reason, this work is concerned with the question of eye safety of the laser-based technology. For this purpose, investigations on laser-tissue interactions, laser-induced damage thresholds and mechanisms by multi-pulse trains were performed as well as assessments according to the laser safety standard in Europe (DIN EN 60825) and the USA (ANSI Z.136) were applied.

    Description: In this work, the task of wide-area indoor people detection in a network of depth sensors is examined. In particular, we investigate how the redundant and complementary multi-view information, including the temporal context, can be jointly leveraged to improve the detection performance. We recast the problem of multi-view people detection in overlapping depth images as an inverse problem and present a generative probabilistic framework to jointly exploit the temporal multi-view image evidence.

    Description: The atrial substrate undergoes electrical and structural remodeling during atrial fibrillation. Detailed multiscale models were used to study the effect of structural remodeling induced at the cellular and tissue levels. Simulated electrograms were used to train a machine-learning algorithm to characterize the substrate. Also, wave propagation direction was tracked from unannotated electrograms. In conclusion, in silico experiments provide insight into electrograms' information of the substrate.

    Description: Effective heat transport systems in aerospace are based on multiphase loop heat pipes (LHPs). For a precise thermal control of the electronics, electrical heaters are additionally used to control the operating temperature of the LHP. This work focusses on the dynamical modeling and model-based control design for LHP-based heat transport systems. The results of this work can be used for the optimization of current control parameters and the efficient control design for future LHP applications.

    Description: In this work, spatio-spectrally coded multispectral light fields, as taken by a light field camera with a spectrally coded microlens array, are investigated. For the reconstruction of the coded light fields, two methods, one based on the principles of compressed sensing and one deep learning approach, are developed.     Description: In the first part of this dissertation, a framework for the design of a CNN for FPGAs is presented, consisting of a preprocessing algorithm, an augmentation technique, a custom quantization scheme and a pruning step of the CNN. The combination of conventional image processing with neural networks is shown in the second part by an example from robotics, where an image-based visual servoing process is successfully conducted for a gripping process of a robot.

    Description: The research reported in this thesis focuses on the decision making aspect of human-machine cooperation and reveals new insights from theoretical modeling to experimental evaluations: Two mathematical behavior models of two emancipated cooperation partners in a cooperative decision making process are introduced.     Description: In recent years, OFDM has become more and more important for radar applications. A disadvantage, however, is the need for high sampling rates, which is exactly the starting point of the frequency comb OFDM radar scheme. With its help, the bandwidth in the radar channel can be enhanced without increasing the sampling rates at the same time. In this way, a high range resolution can be achieved without using fast converters with high sampling rates.

    Description: By providing a high resolution at high distances in a broad field of view, LiDAR sensors are a key element in automated driving cars. However, in harsh environmental conditions, particles from rain or dust attach on the outer surface of the sensor and cause a degradation of the overall performance.     Description: In this work describes the development of a light-based driver assistance system through projections on the road. Under realistic conditions it is shown that information can be transmitted to the driver at night by using projections in front of the vehicle: test persons drive more safely through narrow spaces and react earlier to obstacles. A prototype suitable for road use demonstrates the possibility of a near-series implementation of such a headlamp projection system.

    Description: In this work, two methods are developed and evaluated to integrate and test functional chains of automotive lighting functions on simulation-based test systems. The focus is initially on an approach for the efficient use of light for the display of high contrasts in virtual night driving with a real driver assistance camera. Furthermore, a test method is developed to evaluate pixel-based lighting functions on a hardware-in-the-loop test system based on metrics. In this work, two methods to stimulate and test automotive front lighting functions on simulation-based test benches are developed and evaluated. The first approach deepens the idea to reach necessary high contrasts for virtual night driving with a real driver assistance camera by an efficient use of reflecting light. Furthermore, a test method is shown to test pixel-based lighting functions based on metrics on a hardware-in-the-loop test bench.

    Description: This work introduces a new specification and verification approach for dynamic systems. The introduced approach is able to provide type II error free results by definition, i.e. there are no hidden faults in the verification result. The approach is based on Kaucher interval arithmetic to enclose the measurement in a bounded error sense. The developed methods are proven mathematically to provide a reliable verification for a wide class of safety critical systems.

    Description: In classical approaches for the torque control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines the torque references are converted into current references by static lookup tables which consider power losses. This procedure is dynamically suboptimal, interdependent and strongly machine-dependent. This work addresses the question: How can a Model Predictive Controller be designed to simultaneously optimize the objectives torque reference tracking and power loss minimization?

    Description: In this work, the stack operation of solid oxide cells (SOCs) is analyzed by a simulation model. For this purpose, all coupled physical and chemical sub-processes are represented within a two-dimensional geometry of a single stack level.     Description: In this work, discrete-time and continuous-time methods that integrate flexible reference trajectory representations into Adaptive Dynamic Programming approaches are presented and analyzed for the first time. Moreover, theoretical conditions on the system state are derived that ensure the persistent excitation property, which is crucial for the convergence of the adaptation. Real-world applications of the presented adaptive optimal trajectory tracking control methods reveal their potential.

For modeling battery cells, fractional models which are characterized by non-integer derivative orders have become established due to their electrochemical interpretability.     Description: In the THz frequency range, superconducting detectors coupled to planar antennas are well suited for the use in the field of accelerator beam diagnostics. This work studies the coupling efficiency and spectral sensitivity of different antenna designs. Based on the conclusions, two different detector systems for spectroscopic measurements are developed and verified with measurements at accelerator-based light sources.
