    Description: This volume is based on the section “Transnationalities – Transidentities – Hybridities – Diasporization”, organized by the Ibero-American and Francophone Research Centres of the University of Leipzig as part of the First Annual Conference of the Centre for Area Studies at the University of Leipzig. By now, already a decade has passed since our conference section took place and it is due to various circumstances that this volume has not been published earlier. It carries along, in some sense, its own migration trace. Nevertheless, the questions examined in the contributions have reached even more relevance since then in both, the Old World and the New, due to the various political, social, economic and ecological crisis around the globe that have led to the increased arrival of refugees to Europe and the harsh discussion about a concrete or “intelligent” wall to shield the USA from Latin American migrants, among others. Today, there is an urgent political and social need for concepts of living together in much more heterogeneous and much less familiar societies. The questions, notions and cases explored in the nine contributions that comprise this publication focus on this emergency.

    Description: The internet is changing the way that knowledge is made and shared. Knowledge-making in face-to-face settings is being replaced by information gathering from remote sources, whose origins may be concealed but which can create an illusion of intimacy. Though remote communication is beneficial in many ways – modern societies would fail without it -- and though the tight boundaries of the face-to-face can be used for evil purposes such as criminal conspiracy, if the overall trend to remote communication continues unchecked, it could be disastrous for the future of democracy and the very idea of truth itself. Too much reliance on remote communication threatens the core institutions of democratic societies. We explain the change in technical detail, from a systematic analysis of the workings of the face-to-face to a high level setting-out of its dangerous political implications. The analysis includes field studies, reflexive examination, drawing on the wide experience of the authors, of the stickiness of the face-to-face in our own work and other institutions, and network analysis which explains the illusion of intimacy that can be generated inadvertently or maliciously. We look at the apparent effectiveness of techniques such as blockchain and the limits of their domain. New information is provided about the malicious use of disinformation by foreign powers. We dramatise the dangers to Western pluralist democracy through a personal accounting of the 2020 American election. By drawing out the special features of face-to-face interaction and its constitutive role in creating societies, with science as the icon, the book sets out an agenda for civic education that can protect democratic institutions from the erosion of pluralism and the facile abandonment of trustworthy expertise. The authors conclude by returning to the themes set out at the start of the book, namely the crucial role played by trust in modern societies and the importance of face-to-face interactions in reproducing that trust, and the democratic institutions in which it should be invested.

    Description: Despite frequent protests and abounding discussions about the subject, climate action measures to counter human-made climate change have so far remained largely ineffective. By identifying profound climate-cultural differences, Sarah Kessler offers an explanation to this issue and shows that conventional assumptions of an implicit consensus on the need to prioritise climate action should be reconsidered. She uncovers climate-cultural variations in (implicit and explicit) denial of climate change and thus challenges existing approaches that treat the German public as a unified entity waiting to be activated by the right kind of rationally convincing information.

    Description: This book uses sustainability to explore the interfaces between translation studies, the cultural history of knowledge, and Science and Technology studies (STS). The volume examines various material, cultural and epistemic translation practices where sustainability serves as a boundary object between natural and cultural inquiry. By turning to the intellectual traditions that influenced but were left behind by STS and actor-network theory (ANT), we aim to challenge and expand the Sociology of Translation developed in ANT. Concepts such as ‘inscription’ (Derrida), ‘actant’, ‘narrative’ (Greimas), and ‘world/worlding’ (Heidegger, Spivak) were reemployed – translated – in the canonical STS-texts. What networks of meaning were left behind in this reemployment? The book showcases a combination of cultural and knowledge historical perspectives on the construction of the Sociology of Translation and practical experiments across the registers of nature and culture is novel. There have been brilliant individual attempts to realign the Sociology of Translation with narratives and modes of enunciation, but none has related the Sociology of Translation to the networks and traditions which enabled it but to which it erased its relations and debts. This innovative work will appeal to scholars in translation studies, cultural studies, environmental humanities, medical humanities, and Science and Technology studies.     Description: In this open access book, Timothy Aylsworth and Clinton Castro draw on the deep well of Kantian ethics to argue that we have moral duties, both to ourselves and to others, to protect our autonomy from the threat posed by the problematic use of technology. The problematic use of technologies like smartphones threatens our autonomy in a variety of ways, and critics have only begun to appreciate the vast scope of this problem. In the last decade, we have seen a flurry of books making “self-help” arguments about how we could live happier, more fulfilling lives if we were less addicted to our phones. But none of these authors see this issue as one involving a moral duty to protect our autonomy.

Dabei wird deutlich, dass Krankheiten der Empfindlichkeit Narrative sind, die der Verständigung in Sprach- und Praxiscodes dienen und die institutionellen Regimes folgen.

    Description: The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham, Volume 13 contains authoritative and fully annotated texts of all known and publishable letters sent both to and from Bentham between 1 July 1828 and his death on 6 June 1832. In addition to 474 letters, the volume contains three memorandums concerning Bentham’s health shortly before his death, his Last Will and Testament, and extracts from both the Autobiography and the manuscript diaries of Bentham’s nephew George. Of the letters that have been previously published, most are drawn from the edition of The Works of Jeremy Bentham, prepared under the superintendence of Bentham’s literary executor John Bowring. A small number of letters have been reproduced from newspapers and periodicals. This volume publishes for the first time all the extant correspondence between Bentham and Daniel O’Connell, the Irish Liberator. Other new acquaintances included Charles Sinclair Cullen, barrister and law reformer, and John Tyrrell, the Real Property Commissioner. Throughout the period, Bentham maintained regular contact with old friends and connections, but he also entered into sporadic correspondence with such leading figures in government as the Duke of Wellington, Robert Peel and Henry Brougham. Further afield, Bentham corresponded, amongst others, with the Marquis de La Fayette in France, Edward Livingston in the United States of America and José del Valle in Guatemala.

    Description: This chapter will, first, reconstructs Axel Honneth’s account of the significance of recognition in his book The Struggle for Recognition and track some of the unresolved tensions in it and their role in Honneth’s subsequent work. The final part of the chapter focusses on Honneth’s more recent monograph The Freedom’s Right, in which an oscillation of his position between universalism and historicism or relativism pauses in the latter end. This limits the applicability of the theory outside the confines of Europe or the West. It turns out that the reconstruction and immanent critique of Honneth’s work, however, supports recognition-theoretical universalism.

Durch die Erfahrung der Shoah stellt sich diese Frage, die als Theodizeefrage bezeichnet wird, für das Judentum, aber auch für das Christentum noch drängender, als dies zuvor ohnehin schon der Fall war. In der vorliegenden Studie werden die Antwortansätze, welche der jüdische Philosoph Hans Jonas, die christliche Theologin Dorothee Sölle und der jüdische Theologe Abraham Joshua Heschel angesichts der Shoah im Hinblick auf die Theodizeefrage entwickelt haben, dargestellt sowie aus christlich-theologischer Perspektive kritisch beleuchtet und weitergedacht. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist hierbei, ob und wie angesichts der Shoah die (All-)Macht, das Handeln und das Leiden Gottes gedacht werden können. Im Hinblick auf die Menschen steht die Frage im Fokus, worin die menschliche Verantwortung für und angesichts von Leid besteht. Raphael Döhn, geb. 1989, ist ein evangelischer Theologe mit dem Fachgebiet Systematische Theologie. Von 2015 bis 2020 war er Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Institut für Evangelische Theologie an der Universität Kassel, seit 2020 Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Fachbereich Evangelische Theologie an der Universität Marburg. Er promovierte mit einer Studie zur Theodizeefrage in christlichen und jüdischen Entwürfen des 20. Jahrhunderts, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Gesamtwerke von Hans Jonas, Dorothee Sölle und Abraham Joshua Heschel. Sonstige Schwerpunkte in Forschung und Lehre sind u.a. das Verhältnis von Krieg und Frieden im Denken von Hans Jonas, Schöpfungstheologie sowie Jugendtheologie.

Entsprechend liefert es einen Beitrag zur ontologischen Forschung. Sein und Sprache machen die vom Menschen wahrnehmbare Wirklichkeit aus - als zwei Seiten einer Medaille. Die Frage nach dem Sein ist immer zugleich auch diejenige nach der Sprache. Über die bedeutsame Sprache wird der erkennende Zugang zum Sein möglich, das Sein wird in der Sprache offenbar. Die aristotelische Philosophie versteht sich in der Konsequenz als Erste Wissenschaft und vertritt einen übergreifenden Anspruch: grundsätzlich, im Rahmen der Frage nach der Sprache und dem Sein, kann ihr alles thematisch werden. Implizit wird damit nach nichts Geringerem als der Möglichkeit von Sprache, Kommunikation und Erkenntnis gefragt. Umgekehrt bedürfen Sprache und Erkenntnis der Referenz auf das Wirkliche, um bedeutsam und sinnerfüllt zu sein. Unter der Prämisse dieser doppelten Perspektive kann die aristotelische Philosophie ihren primärwissenschaftlichen Anspruch behaupten. Fundament der grundlegenden Wechselseitigkeit ist das to ti en einai, das wohl mit Recht als einer der wichtigsten Kernbegriffe der aristotelischen Philosophie bezeichnet werden kann.

    Description: L’interprétation communément reçue du romantisme est de considérer qu’il est un phénomène exclusivement esthétique et artistique. Or il n’en est rien. D’un côté, l’esthétique y est adossée à la science dans trois domaines tout particulièrement : en mathématiques, l’idée combinatoire ne manque pas de retentir sur la poétique ; en physique, la théorie des champs permet d’introduire une philosophie romantique de la nature ; en biologie, la théorie de la forme permet de penser une morphologie naissante. D’un autre côté et inversement, les idées esthétiques débordent sur la science comme le montre l’approche goethéenne des phénomènes naturels. Au centre de cet espace théorique et du débat qu’il engendre, il faut placer la pensée de Kant comme le point focal de l’ouvrage. Aller de la science vers l’art ou de l’art vers la science afin de faire valoir leur unité qui est celle de l’esthétique et de l’épistémologie, telle est l’ambition du romantisme allemand. Telle est aussi l’ambition des études réunies ici.

Daniel-Pascal Zorn stellt sich dieser Herausforderung. Er entwickelt eine radikal immanente Vergleichsmethode, die ganz ohne textäußere Kontexte auskommt. Im Zentrum steht dabei das Konzept der Reflexivität, die sich in philosophischen Begründungsfiguren, Prinzipien und Problemen ebenso wiederfinden lässt, wie in ihrer expliziten Thematisierung durch die philosophischen Texte selbst. Zorn entwickelt seinen Gedanken in Auseinandersetzung mit über 40 verschiedenen Philosophen, darunter Platon und Plotin, Hölderlin und Fichte, Spinoza und Kant. Er spannt damit zugleich einen Bogen, der über 2500 Jahre Philosophiegeschichte reicht. Das Buch eignet sich durch seinen didaktischen Aufbau hervorragend als Einführung in und Handbuch für die von Zorn vorgestellte Lektürehinsicht. Die Arbeit wurde mit dem Dissertationspreis der Eichstätter Universitätsgesellschaft 2015 ausgezeichnet.

It focuses specifically on diachronic self-regarding decisions: choices involving our earlier and later selves, in which the earlier self makes a decision for the later self. The author connects the scientific understanding of the neurobehavioral processes at the core of individuals’ perceptions of their future selves with the philosophical reflection on individuals’ moral relationship with their future selves. She delineates a descriptive theory of the perception of the future self that is based on empirical evidence and that systematizes and integrates the current theoretical literature. She then argues for the morality of prudence and interprets diachronic self-regarding decisions as decisions between two agents— the earlier and later selves—that belong to the realm of intergenerational ethics, which regulates the relationship between contemporary people and future generations. Finally, the author provides a moral theory of prudence based on respect for one’s agency. This theory identifies what the present and the future selves owe to one another in diachronic self-regarding decisions. Moral Choices for Our Future Selves will be of interest to scholars and students working in ethics, moral psychology, philosophy of mind, and cognitive science.

    Description: The book aims to set out in which respects concepts are properly studied in philosophy, what methodological role the study of concepts has in philosophy's study of the world, why there are several viable methods of analysis and even conceptual analysis has its place here. Many of the considerations in this book nowadays are placed under the headline 'metaphilosophy'. The book starts with some bold theses in favour of a representationalist theory of meaning and concepts which serve as the background for the discussion in the following chapters. In contrast to paradigmatic ordinary language philosophy the book endorses a representationalist theory of meaning and concepts, thus agreeing with many of its critics in philosophy and the cognitive sciences. In contrast to many of these critics and supposedly the majority of cognitive scientists it endorses the viability of conceptual analysis as one method of philosophy. The book reflects on Frege's theory of concepts, because Frege's theory of concepts was one strand that inaugurated analytic philosophy. Frege's theory of sentential unity has barely been superseded, and the problems arising from Frege's understanding of concepts are still alive. Frege's theory and the related problems in Frege's logic as in the Grundgesetze der Arithmetik (most famously the antinomy known as 'Russell's Paradox' going back to Frege's 'Basic Law V') lead over to considering the proper approach to our concept of logic and the issue of psychological and ontological realism in logic and mathematics. The central part of the book starts by reconsidering the approach and the idea of ordinary language philosophy and its understanding of conceptual analysis. Although ordinary language philosophy cannot be the whole of analytic philosophy a proper understanding of conceptual analysis turns out to be one part of analytic philosophy. This part starts with a general discussion of ordinary language philosophy, but proceeds then by a methodological overview and attempts to engage in some ordinary language philosophy concerning epistemological topics.

    Description: Cognition implies perception and judgement. Perception consists in interpreting a sensory stimulus: it is a common process in every animal with a brain, and can be described as a Bayesian inference where the interpretive algorithm is stored in long-term memory. Judgement, on the other hand, is related to the comparison between two perceptions which are coded in a language, in that short-term memory presents the first perception once again and compares it with the second. This operation is called inverted Bayes’ theorem and while it does not presuppose an algorithm, it builds a new one using comparison. The book shows how the algorithmic leaps related to linguistic operations capture aspects of reality which cannot be reached through Bayesian chains of inference following the same algorithm. Nowadays, we experience the successes of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which, however, works thanks to a direct Bayes’ theorem and speeds up recursive chains, but does not resort to algorithmic leaps; therefore, it does not contribute to human language.

    Description: The book deals with manifestations and relics of magical thinking in the narrative folklore of Cieszyn Silesia (Teschen Silesia, Těšín Silesia). The point of departure is a phenomenological and social constructivist approach to human cognition. The author follows the cognitive dimensions of pre-modern folklore and popular texts in general. They are conventional in the sense that they are repeated in many variants inside one communicative group. Habituation based on more or less accurate reproduction of stereotypes (and corresponding experiences), motives, action scenarios, rationalizations, and motivations, is the source of relatively stable world image.     Description: What is recognition and why is it so important? This book develops a synoptic conception of the significance of recognition in its many forms for human persons by means of a rational reconstruction and internal critique of classical and contemporary accounts. The book begins with a clarification of several fundamental questions concerning recognition. It then reconstructs the core ideas of Fichte, Hegel, Taylor, Fraser and Honneth and utilizes the insights and conceptual tools developed across these chapters for developing a case for the universal importance of recognition for humans. It argues in favor of a universalist anthropological position, unusual in the literature on recognition, that aims to construe a philosophically sound basis for a discourse of common humanity, or of a shared human life-form for which moral relations of recognition are essential. This synthetic conception of the importance of recognition provides tools for articulating deep intuitions shared across cultures about what makes human life and forms of human co-existence better or worse, and thus tools for mutual understanding about the deepest shared concerns of humanity, or of what makes us all human persons despite our differences. Responding to the ethical challenges of data-driven technologies and other tools requires thinking about values in the context of a pandemic as well as in a post-COVID world. Instilling values must be prioritized from the beginning, not only in the emergency response to the pandemic, but in how to proceed with new societal precedents materializing, new norms of health surveillance, and new public health requirements. The contributors with expertise in VSD bridge the gap between ethical acceptability and social acceptance. By addressing ethical acceptability and societal acceptance together, VSD guides COVID-technologies in a way that strengthens their ability to fight the virus, and outlines pathways for the resolution of moral dilemmas. This volume provides diachronic reflections on the crisis response to address long-term moral consequences in light of the post-pandemic future. Both contact-tracing apps and immunity passports must work in a multi-system environment, and will be required to succeed alongside institutions, incentive structures, regulatory bodies, and current legislation. C’est dans la théologie de Mullâ Sadrâ (m. 1640), le plus grand représentant du vaste courant philosophique et mystique contemporain de la dynastie des rois safavides, que Christian Jambet explore la souveraineté de Dieu. Il confronte cette théologie aux penseurs musulmans antérieurs, aux sources grecques et à leurs interprétations. Il examine les transformations par lesquelles une théologie intégrale de la souveraineté divine a conduit de nos jours à l’autorité du théologien juriste. L’autorité des prophètes et des imâms, fondée sur une compréhension spirituelle du Coran et des traditions islamiques, s’exerce au nom de Dieu selon une stricte hiérarchie : un niveau supérieur, celui de l’épanouissement de la vie spirituelle et un niveau inférieur, celui de l’activité judiciaire. À l’opposé de tout modèle de domination extérieure, la religion devient un exercice spirituel d’appropriation des sens cachés du Coran et un modèle de liberté intérieure. En un temps où les théologies islamiques les plus sommaires sèment la terreur, il est bon de connaître que les plus grands penseurs de l’islam, dont Mullâ Sadrâ, ont pensé les fondements de la foi islamique, les transformant en une quête impérieuse de la vie bienheureuse.

    Description: This book is about mental imagery and the important work it does in our mental life. It plays a crucial role in the vast majority of our perceptual episodes. It also helps us understand many of the most puzzling features of perception (like the way it is influenced in a top-down manner and the way different sense modalities interact). But mental imagery also plays a very important role in emotions, action execution, and even in our desires. In sum, there are very few mental phenomena that mental imagery doesn’t show up in—in some way or other. The hope is that if we understand what mental imagery is, how it works and how it is related to other mental phenomena, we can make real progress on a number of important questions about the mind. This book aims at an interdisciplinary audience. As it aims to combine philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience to understand mental imagery, I have not presupposed any prior knowledge in any of these disciplines. As a result, readers with no background in any of these disciplines can also follow the arguments.

    Description: Images of diamonds appear everywhere in American culture. And everyone who has a diamond has a story to tell about it. Our stories about diamonds not only reveal what we do with these tiny stones, but also suggest how we create value, meaning, and identity through our interactions with material culture in general. Things become meaningful through our interactions with them, but how do people go about making meaning? What can we learn from an ethnography about the production of identity, creation of kinship, and use of diamonds in understanding selves and social relationships? By what means do people positioned within a globalized political-economy and a compelling universe of advertising interact locally with these tiny polished rocks? This book draws on 12 months of fieldwork with diamond consumers in New York City as well as an analysis of the iconic De Beers campaign that promised romance, status, and glamour to anyone who bought a diamond to show that this thematic pool is just one resource among many that diamond owners draw upon to engage with their own stones. The volume highlights the important roles that memory, context, and circumstance also play in shaping how people interpret and then use objects in making personal worlds. It shows that besides operating as subjects in an ad-burdened universe, consumers are highly creative, idiosyncratic, and theatrical agents.

    Description: Comment s’acquiert la certitude cartésienne ? Par quelle suite d’exercices le doute, l’incertitude, l’ignorance, se changent-ils en un savoir assuré ? Descartes forge pour l’expliquer une « fable » que Doatéa Nuri prend ici décidément au sérieux. Les tribulations, les hésitations, les atermoiements, les incapacités dont font état le Discours de la méthode ou les Méditations métaphysiques sont imputés par elle non à Descartes, mais à un narrateur qu’elle nomme l’Incertain et dont elle brosse le portrait philosophique. Non sans conséquences importantes pour la philosophie elle-même. Car l’incertitude, autre nom de la neutralité, ou de l’anonymat, caractérise aussi bien « l’espace littéraire ». Cette lecture de Descartes, qui cite Blanchot, Deleuze, Foucault, mais fait aussi songer, quand l’Incertain se fait Barbare ou Arpenteur, au Michaux de Plume, ouvre à la pensée un champ illimité, vertigineux, dans lequel la neutralité, virtuellement universelle, est susceptible d’affecter des textes de tous ordres, sans souci d’aucune autorité. L’incertitude n’est pas seulement une hypothèse paradoxale formulée à propos du philosophe réputé le plus clair et le plus assuré ; elle est peut-être la condition de toute pensée.

    Description: In 2015, the United Nations decided to establish the goal of achieving “zero hunger” in the world by 2030 through “outcome targets” such as eliminating hunger and improving access to food, ending all forms of malnutrition, promoting sustainable and resilient agriculture, and maintaining genetic diversity in food production. As a result of this decision, strategies are under way in different countries around the world in the form of political, academic, development, and non-governmental organization projects and programs. Five years later, these strategies have certainly generated results that need to be documented and analyzed so as to answer the following questions: what are the progress and success stories in terms of policies, innovations, technologies, and approaches to reach the zero hunger goal? What are the constraints and mitigation strategies? Are we really in a phase of transition towards the zero hunger goal? What new directions do we need to consider to achieve this goal, particularly in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic, which affects all sectors of development around the world? This book volume will be published within MDPI’s new open access book series entitled “Transitioning to Sustainability”. It welcomes contributions of empirical research, position pieces, and presentations of important research programs or stakeholder initiatives that cover any of the four “outcome targets” of the zero hunger goal. The contributions may come from academics, students, and policy makers of any region in the world and may be related to specific disciplines or be inter and/or transdisciplinary. They may cover areas including but not limited to sustainable improvement of food production, implementing sustainable food and farming systems, improving access to food, limiting malnutrition, limiting food loss and food waste and, finally, global analyses of the challenges of reaching zero hunger in relation to other sustainable development goals as well as success stories on projects, programmes or government initiatives. Transitioning to Zero Hunger is part of MDPI's new Open Access book series Transitioning to Sustainability. With this series, MDPI pursues environmentally and socially relevant research which contributes to efforts toward a sustainable world. Transitioning to Sustainability aims to add to the conversation about regional and global sustainable development according to the 17 SDGs. Set to be published in 2020/2021, the book series is intended to reach beyond disciplinary, even academic boundaries.

    Description: Ce livre s’efforce de réparer une injustice : proposer une réflexion d’ensemble sur l’œuvre du philosophe français Mikel Dufrenne (1910-1995) qui semble un peu délaissée voire méconnue aujourd’hui. Si sa démarche phénoménologique héritée de Husserl le conduit immanquablement à s’interroger sur la place singulière que l’objet esthétique occupe dans notre monde, son projet est plus ambitieux. L’attention que Mikel Dufrenne porte aux différents arts (les arts plastiques, la musique, la poésie) ainsi qu’à la richesse des expériences esthétiques vécues, décrites et commentées, lui permet en effet de viser un but supérieur : non seulement redéfinir et réorganiser la phénoménologie autour de la question de l’art, mais faire de l’œuvre ce qui permet de remonter vers un principe originaire, la Nature, qui fonde toute création. Cette tâche singulière et méconnue méritait bien un effort philosophique collectif dont le présent ouvrage est le fruit.

    Description: August Ludwig Hülsen (1765-1809) was a contributor to the emergence of German idealism. Notwithstanding, his name and works are up to this day almost entirely unknown to most scholars in the field. This monograph discusses the historical importance of Hülsen's Prüfung der von der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin aufgestellten Preisfrage: Was hat die Metaphysik seit Leibniz und Wolf für Progressen gemacht? (1796), his only book, for the emergence of German idealism, especially the thought of Reinhold and Fichte during the 1790's. The usual way of focusing on the Wissenschaftslehre, and hence, on the emergence of German idealism, is as a “response” of Fichte to the skeptical objections of Schulze-Aenesidemus to Reinhold's early Elementarphilosophie. This “response”, as Fichte himself recognized in 1798, was far from complete. Hülsen, a Fichtean thinker, restructured and regrounded those aspects of Reinhold's system that Fichte left intact: in particular, Reinhold's almost forgotten approach to the rational history of philosophy. In 1797, Hülsen's achievement prompted Fichte's recommendation of Hülsen's book in Annalen des philosophischen Tons as an introduction to his Wissenschaftslehre. This indicates that Fichte recognized Hülsen as a partner in the development of his incomplete system. Accordingly, the historical importance of Hülsen's book is that it completed Fichte's attempt to overcome Reinhold's standpoint and contributed to the emergence of German idealism.

    Description: La première édition de La Naissance du paradigme herméneutique remonte à 1990. Depuis, la discussion autour de l’histoire de l’herméneutique et des enjeux qui lui sont liés tant du côté de la philosophie que des sciences interprétatives s’est considérablement développée. L’objet de cette seconde édition n’est pas de prendre position dans ce débat. Le volume reste conçu comme un recueil de matériaux devant faciliter la réévaluation du moment où la théorie herméneutique, à la fin du xviiie siècle, subit un changement d’orientation radical, dont l’un des principaux effets est de rendre possible le développement des sciences humaines ou de la culture. Aux douze contributions primitives, qui traitent de F. Schleiermacher, F. Schlegel, W. von Humboldt, A. Boeckh et de G. Droysen, deux nouveaux textes ont été ajoutés, l’un, en amont, sur Kant, l’autre, en aval, sur W. Dilthey. Denis Thouard a également écrit une postface qui replace l’ensemble des contributions dans le cadre de la discussion actuelle, et fournit ainsi au lecteur la possibilité de s’y orienter. La conviction présidant à cette collection d’études est double : d’une part, qu’il existe bien entre l’herméneutique du xviie siècle et le nouveau paradigme herméneutique une discontinuité fondamentale, d’autre part, que les notions de « méthode » et d’« objectivation », mobilisées par H.-G. Gadamer pour définir mais aussi pour discréditer les ambitions de la nouvelle herméneutique, ne permettent d’en comprendre ni l’histoire, ni les enjeux, ni peut-être et avant tout les ressources.

    Description: La publication en 2013 d'une version reconstruite du texte de Kracauer Die totalitäre Propaganda (1937-1938) a renouvelé la perception que l’on pouvait avoir de cette dimension de son œuvre et de son apport à une « théorie critique de la propagande ». La réflexion sur la propagande s’inscrit dans le contexte plus vaste de l’élaboration par les exilés allemands, au tournant des années 1930-1940, d’une grille de lecture du national-socialisme, vu comme une pathologie de la modernité, ainsi que dans celui des grands projets de recherches américains sur la propagande nazie (auxquels Adorno et Kracauer ont été associés). Au sein de la nébuleuse de la « Théorie critique » Kracauer exprime, comme Benjamin, un point de vue à certains égards dissonant. À rebours d’une approche qui insiste surtout sur la continuité entre capitalisme et nazisme, il se montre particulièrement sensible à la séduction esthétique du fascisme, et à sa mise en scène d’une réalité de substitution, qui est selon lui l’expression d’une fuite en avant nihiliste : ses analyses concrètes ne portent pas tant sur les contenus du message que sur le langage même de la propagande, et la vision de la société et de l’histoire qu’elle véhicule, dans sa forme même. Le débat complexe qui se développe à cette époque entre Adorno, Benjamin et Kracauer met notamment en œuvre les catégories de « fétichisme » (Adorno), de « fantasmagorie » et d’« esthétisation du politique » (Benjamin), d’« apparence » et de « pseudo-réalité » (Kracauer). Il présente en premier lieu un intérêt historique, en tant que l’analyse du nazisme constitue pour le projet d’une théorie critique une mise à l’épreuve, qui suscite de vifs débats internes et aboutit chez Adorno et Horkheimer, dans la Dialectique de la raison (1944-1947), à une reformulation de ce projet. Mais dans un contexte aujourd’hui bien différent, les thèmes qui sont débattus entre ces protagonistes, comme celui de la dérive autoritaire du libéralisme, des manipulations de masse, de la construction médiatique du réel n’ont rien perdu de leur actualité.

    Description: Le Zibaldone est le grand journal de pensées de Giacomo Leopardi. Le jeune philosophe y consigne, sur près de quinze ans et plus de 4500 pages, des réflexions qu’il nomme « de philosophie variée et de belle littérature ». Et en effet, c’est bien la variété, et même la plus étonnante bigarrure qui caractérisent ce monumental magasin d’écriture : bigarrure des matières brassées (métaphysique, théologie, politique, morale, esthétique) et bigarrure des formes (aphorisme, anecdote, note érudite, essai). Le Zibaldone apparaît donc tout d’abord comme un flux discontinu et disparate de pensée. Cependant, Leopardi n’entend pas y exposer une rhapsodie de vérités isolées et fragmentaires mais un authentique système philosophique. « Il mio sistema » : tels sont les premiers mots du cri léopardien, de son exigence méthodologique et ontologique. Manquer d’esprit de système c’est manquer d’ordre, et c’est surtout manquer l’essence même du réel, de la nature en tant que totalité, une nature qu’il ne saurait concevoir autrement, elle aussi, que comme un système et un ordre. Quel est donc l’ordre du système léopardien ? Et dans quelle mesure celui-ci épouse-t-il l’ordre de la nature ? Quel est leur fondement commun ? Répondre à ces questions revient à montrer en quoi cette totalité mouvante, ouverte et rhizomatique qu’est le Zibaldone est le lieu le plus à même d’accueillir une pensée placée devant l’urgence de statuer sur les guises de l’existence et de la contradiction.

    Description: Cet ouvrage a pour ambition de jeter un nouvel éclairage sur les rapports entre la phénoménologie issue de l’œuvre fondatrice de E. Husserl (1859-1938) et les approches scientifiques contemporaines de la cognition, envisagées dans toute leur diversité disciplinaire, la multiplicité de leurs niveaux d’explication et la variété de leurs conflits d’hypothèses. Le souci premier des recherches qu’il rassemble n’est donc pas de s’engager dans une nouvelle exégèse de la phénoménologie husserlienne, quoique le rôle de ce travail interprétatif et critique ne soit aucunement sous-estimé, mais bien plutôt de déterminer dans quelle mesure celle-ci peut contribuer à la quête actuelle d’une explication naturaliste des phénomènes cognitifs, en lui apportant des compléments sur certains points ou en la soumettant à la critique sur d’autres. Mais au-delà, leur ambition est aussi de mesurer la pertinence de la recherche cognitive contemporaine pour la phénoménologie husserlienne elle-même, en évaluant en quoi elle est susceptible d’imprimer à cette dernière un nouveau tournant. Parce qu'aucun ouvrage ne saurait prétendre embrasser les multiples facettes de cette double interrogation, les contributions ici rassemblées l’abordent principalement sous l’angle de la question de la naturalisation. Cette problématique permet d’embrasser une grande variété de problèmes, allant des structures générales de l’intentionnalité au problème des principes épistémologiques et ontologiques sur lesquels doit reposer une théorie scientifique de la cognition, en passant par l’analyse de la temporalité ou de la perception, ainsi que la modélisation mathématique de leur description phénoménologique. Naturaliser la phénoménologie constitue par là une réflexion collective sur la façon dont la phénoménologie husserlienne peut contribuer à l’effort actuel pour surmonter le problème du déficit d’explication de l’expérience phénoménale par l’activité cérébrale, et en retour, sur celle dont un tel effort permet de la réorienter dans une voie naturaliste. Ce livre est la version française de l’ouvrage Naturalizing Phenomenology : Issues in Contemporary Phenomenology and Cognitive Science, paru en décembre 1999 à Stanford University Press.

Im Fokus steht die Konturierung des epistemischen Potentials von Diagrammen im Verhältnis zu Schrift und Bild. Dabei wird das Diagramm als Paradigma einer Philosophie vorgeschlagen, die sich als Orientierung versteht. Das erfordert jedoch die angemessene Berücksichtigung der ästhetischen Dimension des Diagramms, wofür der Vorschlag eines »hybrid optimierten Diagramms« entwickelt wird.

It is a complex, positive phenomenon that occurs in language, in music, and in mime. Bernard P. Dauenhauer offers an original, comprehensive, and explicitly phenomenological analysis of silence in all its aspects. In the first part of the study the author describes the various kinds of silence, explores the relationship of silence to different types of discourse (political, artistic, moral, religious, and technological), and presents an intentional analysis, delimiting the essential characteristics of silence. Testing his insights against the thought of other philosophers who have considered the meaning of silence—notably Heidegger, Hegel, Husserl, Sartre, Derrida. and Merleau-Ponty—Dauenhauer, in the second part of the book, constructs an ontological interpretation of the significance of silence. The synthesis that emerges demonstrates the complexity of silence and its important role in a broadly conceived philosophy of language.

    Description: « Penser ma mort c’est aussi bien penser moi sans le monde que le monde sans moi, c’est penser à la rupture d’un rapport. Où l’angoisse commence c’est quand, au sentiment du monde comme réalité empirique, nous substituons une présence du monde en nous, qui serait le temps... Je n’étais pas plus satisfait du monde mais du moins je me sentais en sécurité dans un monde qui ne me satisfaisait pas. Ce sont ces deux conditions qui ont pu faire place en moi à l’angoisse de la mort : celle de disparaître non au monde (empiriquement) mais celle de disparaître au sens absolu... ». Par toutes sortes de détours ce texte ramène à un centre, la distinction entre la peur de mourir qui concerne le texte de la vie, et l’angoisse devant la mort, qui elle ne concerne « rien ». L’auteur, à qui le genre même du Journal permet de se contredire et dans ces contradictions mêmes de retrouver toujours les mêmes évidences, s’appuie sur trois refuges, la réflexion bouddhique (et indienne), celle d’Epicure, la pensée christique (le « il faut qu’il vive »). Des analyses particulières s’entremêlent, celle du suicide (« le suicide s’explique parce que l’angoisse de la mort ne peut contrebalancer le dégoût de la vie, sans quoi il n’y aurait pas de suicide »), la peine de mort, le couple... Aux trois points d’appui qui reviennent explicitement — érotisme, travail, art — le quatrième que l’auteur ne nomme pas, l’ami mort, est peut-être le plus présent. La différence porte en elle le double à condition de comprendre que le double n’est pas deux fois une unité mais l’impossibilité pour une chose d’être une. Des notions (l’étranger, la différence, l’altérité, le métis, la relégation, le métèque, l’autochtone, le même, l’unicité, l’identité…) mais aussi des penseurs (Héraclite, Parménide, Blanchot, Levinas, Maître Eckhart, Platon, Michaux, Lao Tseu, Deleuze, Derrida…) pour mieux saisir la nature profonde de cette communauté humaine. Fragmenter l’unité apparente de chaque singularité pour faire remonter sa propre étrangeté : c’est à cet instant précis peut-être que le mouvement de la communauté prend tout son sens, quand il résiste à l’uniforme. Commun, communion, communisme, communauté, communautaire, communautarisme… le terme de communauté est complexe. Utilisé à tort et à travers il perd son sens. Qu’est-ce qu’une communauté finalement ? Comment distinguer la communauté du communautarisme et comment éviter de réduire la communauté au communautaire ou l’identité à l’identitaire ? « Qu’est-ce donc qui nous manque ? », pour reprendre la question de Maître Eckhart. La communauté pour combler un manque ou la communauté comme comble du manque ? C’est l’interrogation centrale de cet essai sur la place de l’étranger dans la communauté humaine.

    Description: Anerkennung markiert ein zentrales Strukturmoment pädagogischer Praktiken und gilt weithin unbestritten sowohl als Ziel als auch als Mittel pädagogischen Handelns. Die Fragen aber, was denn unter Anerkennung in pädagogischen Feldern – insbesondere in Schule und Unterricht – zu verstehen ist, wie Anerkennung praktiziert wird und zu welchen Effekten sie führt, sind hingegen weithin umstritten. Hier setzen nun die erziehungswissenschaftlichen Studien des Forschungsprojekts an und tragen in theoretisch, methodologisch und empirisch ausgerichteten Beiträgen zu einem umfassenden Verständnis von Anerkennung bei. Dabei werden an ausgewählten pädagogischen Praktiken jeweilige Anerkennungsmuster und -ordnungen herausgearbeitet und mithilfe eines adressierungsanalytischen Zugriffs auf ihre jeweiligen (Subjektivierungs-)Effekte hin untersucht. Dadurch gelingt es, den derzeitigen Diskurs der Anerkennung um eine eigenständige Perspektive zu bereichern.

Les deux textes rassemblés ici, l’un une proposition, l’autre une critique, semblent paradigmatiques des débats possibles lorsqu’il est question des sciences de l’homme. Pour Albert Piette l’anthropologie doit être refondée et adopter un nouveau paradigme : l’étude des volumes humains en train d’exister. Quant à Jean-Michel Salanskis, il tente de montrer que l’opération d’objectivation de l’humain n’est ni heureuse ni facile. Bien que chaque démarche ait le sentiment de totaliser l’humain et de couvrir tout le champ de sa manifestation, chacune emprunte à l’autre et d’ailleurs, chacune a sa façon de se révéler paradoxale.
