    Description: Les aspects politiques, militaires, économiques et géographiques de la Première Guerre mondiale sont à présent bien connus ; mais la rupture qu’a signifiée le déclenchement des hostilités en 1914 atteint également les domaines de la pensée, de la littérature et de la conscience des peuples engagés dans le conflit. Dû à une douzaine de chercheurs, germanistes ou historiens, cet ouvrage est consacré aux composantes philosophiques de ce qu’on a appelé, non sans raison, la "guerre des esprits" et à la mise en forme littéraire des diverses images de la guerre. Dans la première partie, six études novatrices, étayées par des documents inédits ou non encore étudiés, rendent compte de l’attitude des écrivains et des intellectuels allemands et français qu’elles replacent dans le contexte des grands débats idéologiques de l’époque. Contraints d’intégrer le thème de la guerre dans leur œuvre, romanciers et poètes ont tenté d’opposer à l’horreur du champ de bataille un traitement esthétique de ce thème lorsqu’ils n’ont pas magnifié le combat. La seconde moitié de l’ouvrage montre, à partir d’analyses de textes fondamentaux, comment s’est opérée la rencontre entre l’histoire littéraire et l’actualité guerrière et apporte des réponses inédites à l’épineuse question de sa fécondité.

    Description: La théorie de Darwin aussi bien que sa réception scientifique, littéraire et politique en France continuent d’être matière à débat. Les controverses qu’elle a suscitées à partir de la première traduction française de L’Origine des espèces en 1862 n’ont pas été le seul fait des naturalistes, des géologues ou des paléontologues. De nombreux autres savants se sont préoccupés de l’impact du darwinisme sur leur discipline, notamment en philologie, dans les mathématiques, la linguistique, la psychologie comparée, l’histoire ou la philosophie. Les auteurs des textes réunis dans Darwin au Collège de France montrent que le Collège de France constitue un point de référence idéal pour étudier les idées de Darwin et leur réception ainsi que la manière dont elles ont pu jouer sur la formation des disciplines du milieu du xixe siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Parmi les défenseurs ou les adversaires français du darwinisme, on compte en effet plusieurs de ses professeurs, à commencer par Pierre Flourens, dont l’Examen du livre de M. Darwin (1864) a été l’un des premiers comptes rendus hostiles de L’Origine des espèces. D’autres figurent encore dans la liste : Ernest Renan, Edgar Quinet, Théodule Ribot, Jean-Charles Lévêque, Étienne-Jules Marey, Jean-François Nourrisson, Michel Bréal, Gabriel Tarde, Henri Bergson, Étienne Gilson. À cette liste s’ajoutent les professeurs de biologie, de médecine, de paléontologie, de neurosciences, ou d’économie politique. Le colloque, dont les contributions sur quelques-uns des savants mentionnés ci-dessus sont réunies dans le deuxième volume de la collection « Passage des disciplines », a été organisé par Alain Prochiantz et Antoine Compagnon dans le cadre du projet « Passage des disciplines : Histoire globale du Collège de France, xixe siècle - xxe siècle », qui s’intéresse à l’évolution des matières enseignées aussi bien que celles qui ont n’y ont pas été admises et qui forment un « Collège virtuel », depuis la fin du xviiie siècle jusqu’aux années 1960. Il est dirigé par Antoine Compagnon, avec la collaboration de Céline Surprenant et le soutien financier de PSL (2016-2019), et de la Fondation Hugot.

    Description: In 'An Aqueous Territory' Ernesto Bassi traces the configuration of a geographic space he calls the transimperial Greater Caribbean between 1760 and 1860. Focusing on the Caribbean coast of New Granada (present-day Colombia), Bassi shows that the region's residents did not live their lives bounded by geopolitical borders. Rather, the cross-border activities of sailors, traders, revolutionaries, indigenous peoples, and others reflected their perceptions of the Caribbean as a transimperial space where trade, information, and people circulated, both conforming to and in defiance of imperial regulations. Bassi demonstrates that the islands, continental coasts, and open waters of the transimperial Greater Caribbean constituted a space that was simultaneously Spanish, British, French, Dutch, Danish, Anglo-American, African, and indigenous.

    Description: In CHINESE SURPLUS Ari Heinrich dissects the figure of the medically or artistically commodified body in Chinese culture and popular science. Providing a history of how bodies have been thought and seen to mirror the nation, Heinrich charts the trajectory from an imperial idea of the body as a machine with interchangeable parts to current representations in which the parts are worth more than the whole and may be harvested at will--what he calls a diasporic form of the body. In seeing the body this way Heinrich makes clear his case for a new method he calls biopolitical aesthetics, one that uses the tools of literary and visual culture analysis to restore agency to aesthetics in the production of meaning in life during contemporary biopolitical times.

Mettant l’accent sur une rupture avec l’Ancien Monde (à la suite d’une guerre ou d’un cataclysme), il imagine de nouvelles façons de vivre, généralement façonnées par une technique très développée et un pouvoir autoritaire. Influencé par l’utopie, mais relevant le plus souvent de la contre-utopie (dystopie), il décrit volontiers des sociétés totalitaires, un monde absurde auquel le présent conduirait presque inéluctablement, ce qui implique une critique politique de l’époque contemporaine. Il revêt ainsi un caractère prophétique et constitue une réflexion sur le Pouvoir, ainsi que sur la notion même de civilisation. Enfin, étant donné qu’il s’agit le plus souvent de romans, écrits dès l’origine par de grands écrivains (H.G. Wells, J. London), on peut sans doute conclure à l’existence d’un véritable sous-genre romanesque : le roman d’anticipation politique, entouré d’un corpus très abondant d’œuvres ressortissant à la paralittérature, et de fictions cinématographiques.

    Description: The question of how to maintain the continuity of diplomacy while developing democracy without military intervention is an old and new issue. The challenge can be described as a dilemma between democracy and diplomatic coherence. This dilemma is not unique to the twenty-first century; it has been a constant challenge to the development of democracy. In non-Western countries, democratisation originated in the nineteenth century and has had many successes and failures. After the Russo-Japanese War, political parties began to take power in Japan. The best embodiment of diplomacy in Japan's emerging democracy—the development of parliamentary democracy and mass-based democracy—is Shidehara Kijūrō (1872–1951), who served as foreign minister from 1924 to 1927 and from 1929 to 1931, and was prime minister from 1945 to 1946. As a diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shidehara had long grappled with the issue of how to ensure diplomatic coherence in modern Japan, which was becoming increasingly democratic. Although Shidehara succeeded to some extent in promoting diplomacy in cooperation with the US and the UK under party politics, the rise of the military after the Manchurian Incident forced him to retire for a period. However, after the Pacific War, Shidehara became prime minister of the US-occupied Japan and attempted to restore cooperative diplomacy under party politics. Shidehara came to the conclusion that the way to achieve both democracy and diplomatic coherence was through nonpartisan diplomacy towards peace. This book examines the tension between diplomacy and democracy, focusing on Shidehara’s life and exploring modern Japan’s footsteps. Shidehara was undoubtedly one of Japan’s most important diplomatic figures.

    Description: "Printing and Prophecy: Prognostication and Media Change 1450-1550 examines prognostic traditions and late medieval prophetic texts in the first century of printing and their effect on the new medium of print. The many prophetic and prognostic works that followed Europe's earliest known printed book—not the Gutenberg Bible, but the Sibyl's Prophecy, printed by Gutenberg two years earlier and known today only from a single page—over the next century were perennial best sellers for many printers, and they provide the modern observer with a unique way to study the history and inner workings of the print medium. The very popularity of these works, often published as affordable booklets, raised fears of social unrest. Printers therefore had to meet customer demand while at the same time channeling readers' reactions along approved paths. Authors were packaged—and packaged themselves—in word and image to respond to the tension, while leading figures of early modern culture such as Paracelsus, Martin Luther, and Sebastian Brant used printed prophecies for their own purposes in a rapidly changing society. Based on a wide reading of many sources, Printing and Prophecy contributes to the study of early modern literature, including how print changed the relationship among authors, readers, and texts. The prophetic and astrological texts the book examines document changes in early modern society that are particularly relevant to German studies and are key texts for understanding the development of science, religion, and popular culture in the early modern period. By combining the methods of cultural studies and book history, this volume brings a new perspective to the study of Gutenberg and later printers."

Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi is the result of the discovery of unpublished documentation on the trials - only partly known - against the abacus master Amedeo Landi, who taught the Milanese merchants at the Broletto. This is an exceptional case not only because only one witness to the activity of the Milanese inquisitorial court in the Middle Ages (whose documentation has been entirely lost) was known until now, but also because of the role of the ecclesiastical court and its officials. The wealth of information and themes has prompted a team effort by the professors of the Department of Historical Studies to clarify the many aspects (political, religious, economic, documentary) of an event that shows the vitality of 15th-century Milan, in which the protagonist, the teacher Amedeo Landi, in an attempt to protect his students, clashes with the most important preacher of his time, Brother Bernardino of Siena, whose canonisation process is temporarily blocked precisely to shed light on the Milanese episode.

Si tratta di un caso eccezionale non solo perché finora si conosceva un solo testimone dell’attività del tribunale inquisitoriale milanese nel medioevo (la cui documentazione è andata interamente perduta), ma anche per il ruolo del tribunale ecclesiastico e dei suoi funzionari. La ricchezza delle informazioni e dei temi ha suggerito un lavoro d’équipe dei docenti del Dipartimento di studi storici per chiarire i molteplici aspetti (politici, religiosi, economici, documentari) di una vicenda che mostra la vitalità della Milano quattrocentesca, in cui il protagonista, il maestro Amedeo Landi, nel tentativo di tutelare i suoi studenti si scontra con il più importante predicatore del suo tempo, frate Bernardino da Siena, il cui processo di canonizzazione viene momentaneamente bloccato proprio per fare luce sull’episodio milanese.

    Description: For the first time, this book examines the comparative impact of the Obama administration on the NATO and defense policies of European allies. Germany, Poland and Turkey serve as case studies to evaluate American policies vis-à-vis NATO Europe. All three are representative for the Alliance in various ways. Thus, the results of this book offer an outlook for NATO Europe and the Alliance as a whole. Despite the fact that all three countries are highly dependent on American security guarantees in theory and practice, the results of this study reveal different national responses. Indeed, the book demonstrates multi-, bi-, and unilateralization attempts in reaction to US engagement in and vis-à-vis NATO Europe. Hence, a better understanding of current developments within the Alliance as well as the basis for the future debate about the transatlantic organisation are provided.     Description: St Peter's, Barton-upon-Humber, is a redundant medieval church in the care of English Heritage. As a result of a major program of research carried out between 1978 and 2007, it is now the most intensively studied parish church in the UK. Excavations between 1978 and 1984 investigated most of the interior of the building, as well as a swathe of churchyard around its exterior. At the same time, a stone-by-stone record and detailed archaeological study of the fabric and furnishings of the church was undertaken, continuing down to 2007. The twin aims of the project were to understand the architectural history and setting of this complex, multi-period building (Volume 1, Parts 1 and 2) and to recover a substantial sample of the population for palaeopathological study (Volume 2). An extensive program of historical and topographical research also took place in order to set the archaeological evidence firmly in context.

    Description: In 1907, the city of Heredia became the epicenter of the most important religious conflict experienced by Costa Rica in the 20th century. A complaint that the theory of evolution was being taught in the Lyceum (i.e. secondary school) of that city, triggered an increasingly intense confrontation between the Catholic parishioners and the circle of young radical intellectuals articulating around the writer and educator Roberto Brenes Mesén. In the course of this process, Costa Rican society, to the alarm of the government of Cleto González Víquez, was the scene of popular mobilizations in defense of the faith, excommunications and burning of impious texts, while Catholic morality was systematically questioned based on sexual abuse attributed to priests. For a moment, it seemed that the country had gone back in time, and that the ghosts of 1884 were present.

    Description: The different theoretical notions and practices of the relations between the state and religious communities in early modern Europe constitute one of the most interesting problems in historiography. Moving away from a simple «toleration» versus «non-toleration» dichotomy, the author sets out to analyse the inter-confessional relations in selected European territories in a «longue duree» perspective, between Reformation and Enlightenment. This book takes a close look at the aristocracy’s understanding of a free constitution and at the nobility’s complex relationship with the monarchy.     Description: This volume provides an ambitious synopsis of the complex, colourful world of textiles in ancient Mediterranean iconography. A wealth of information on ancient textiles is available from depictions such as sculpture, vase painting, figurines, reliefs and mosaics. Commonly represented in clothing, textiles are also present in furnishings and through the processes of textile production. The challenge for anyone analysing ancient iconography is determining how we interpret what we see. As preserved textiles rarely survive in comparable forms, we must consider the extent to which representations of textiles reflect reality, and critically evaluate the sources. Images are not simple replicas or photographs of reality. I argue that entertainment in vaudevilles was shaped between the perception of difference and similarity, between human trafficking, covert prostitution, anti-Semitism and nationalism. Ultimately, my research shows how a space for Jewish-non-Jewish people was created in the coinciding of the mass migration movement and the emerging mass culture between the Habsburg Monarchy and the United States.
    Description: Auf die Tour berichtet von der Teilhabe von Jüdinnen und Juden an der populären Kultur in Wien, Budapest und New York. Zwischen Differenzwahrnehmungen und Ähnlichkeitsdenken, zwischen Menschenhandel, verdeckter Prostitution, Antisemitismus und Nationalismus gestaltete sich Unterhaltung in Varietés. Sans jamais sombrer dans le misérabilisme ni dans l’idéologie progressiste des intellectuels militants qu’il a fréquentés d’abord, il anticipe brillamment d'une génération sur l’explosion globale des littératures ‘dalit’ mais sans pour autant être intégré à celles-ci. Seul, ignoré ou admiré, il reste largement à découvrir. Son œuvre de fiction, ni réaliste ni populiste, est d’une précision clinique. Le talent de l’écrivain, très conscient mais rebelle à toute théorisation, consiste à peindre en l'éclairant de la lumière la plus crue, sous des angles variés mais toujours impitoyables, la société dans laquelle il situe une action exorcisée de toute métaphysique comme de tout misérabilisme, imperméable à toute sensiblerie, une vision du monde à travers ses soubassements. C’est par en-dessous qu’il en lait découvrir les mécanismes, intéressé par les manipulateurs de tous calibres, petits truqueurs ou ‘brokers’ parvenus, autant et plus que par leurs victimes, fasciné par la complexité des comportements humains et de leur enchaînement.

    Description: Este volumen de la colección Fuentes presenta la edición de un manual de confesión escrito en Castilla en la segunda mitad del siglo XV, actualmente conservado en los fondos de la biblioteca de la Real Academia de la Historia de Madrid. El códice, compuesto por varios textos o fragmentos de textos, redactados algunos de ellos en lengua vernácula y otros en latín, es un valioso testimonio de la difusión y de la circulación de este tipo de opúsculos destinados a los confesores obligados, a partir del Concilio de Letrán IV (1215), a administrar al menos una vez al año el sacramento de penitencia. Su originalidad radica en el examen de conciencia ad status que presenta en su parte central. El estudio del manuscrito permite demostrar que se trata, al menos en parte, de un compendio de la importante suma escrita por Martín Pérez en 1316, el Libro de las confesiones. La edición del códice está precedida por un minucioso análisis de su contenido y de los procedimientos de abreviación, y propone algunas hipótesis acerca de los motivos que pudieron suscitar su realización.     Description: This social, cultural, and political history of Slavic Muslim women of the Yugoslav region in the first decades of the post-Ottoman era is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of the issues confronting these women. It is based on a study of voluntary associations (philanthropic, cultural, Islamic-traditionalist, and feminist) of the period. It is broadly held that Muslim women were silent and relegated to a purely private space until 1945, when the communist state “unveiled” and “liberated” them from the top down.  After systematic archival research in Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, and Austria, Fabio Giomi challenges this view by showing:  How different sectors of the Yugoslav elite through association publications, imagined the role of Muslim women in post-Ottoman times, and how Muslim women took part in the construction or the contestation of these narratives.  How associa­tions employed different means in order to forge a generation of “New Muslim Women” able to cope with the post-Ottoman political and social circumstances.  And how Muslim women used the tools provided by the associations in order to pursue their own projects, aims and agendas.  The insights are relevant for today’s challenges facing Muslim women in Europe. The text is illustrated with exceptional photographs.

    Description: Ginseng and Borderland explores the territorial boundaries and political relations between Qing China and Chosŏn Korea during the period from the early seventeenth to the late nineteenth centuries. By examining a unique body of materials written in Chinese, Manchu, and Korean, and building on recent studies in New Qing History, Seonmin Kim adds new perspectives to current understandings of the remarkable transformation of the Manchu Qing dynasty (1636–1912) from a tribal state to a universal empire. This book discusses early Manchu history and explores the Qing Empire’s policy of controlling Manchuria and Chosŏn Korea. Kim also contributes to the Korean history of the Chosŏn dynasty (1392–1910) by challenging conventional accounts that embrace a China-centered interpretation of the tributary relationship between the two polities, stressing instead the agency of Chosŏn Korea in the formation of the Qing Empire. This study demonstrates how Koreans interpreted and employed this relationship in order to preserve the boundary—and peace—with the suzerain power. By focusing on the historical significance of the China-Korea boundary, this book defines the nature of the Qing Empire through the dynamics of contacts and conflicts under both the cultural and material frameworks of its tributary relationship with Chosŏn Korea.

La forme qu'elle y assume se dessine de façon décisive au moment même de l'indépendance en 1822 et se reproduit en temps que modernisation conservatrice tout au long des deux siècles suivants.     Description: Comment se dire dans son temps quand l'histoire invente l'individu en même temps qu'elle le malmène ? De Waterloo aux Mémoires d'outre-tombe, la publication de mémoires est un phénomène éditorial qui fait parler à l'époque de « fièvre » ou de « manie ». Parmi ces textes, seul le grand œuvre de Chateaubriand aurait eu la grâce, sanctionnée par une postérité toujours active, de transformer en or littéraire le modèle d'écriture pratiqué dans le tout-venant des mémoires. Les moins mal connus de ces derniers sont les mémoires de Fouché, de la duchesse d'Abrantès, de madame de Genlis et les Mémoires d'une Contemporaine. Le succès de ces textes en leur temps n'a d'égal que l'oubli dans lequel ils sont rapidement tombés, dès la seconde moitié du xixe siècle : victimes du divorce, consommé à ce moment-là, entre histoire et littérature. Occulté depuis plus d'un siècle, l'énorme corpus de la mémoire historique publiée entre 1815 et 1848 existe comme un continent englouti. Le mettre au jour, c'est non seulement ressusciter une bonne part du discours de l'époque, mais plus encore observer comment ont été amenés à se rencontrer et donc à se réinventer les modèles de l'expression de soi et de l'histoire. La prose des mémoires est comme un laboratoire où, dans les conditions d'existence nouvelles créées par la Révolution, l'écriture de soi, celle de l'histoire et aussi celle du roman se découvrent partie liée.

    Description: Women’s Activism and "Second Wave" Feminism situates late 20th century feminisms within a global framework of women’s activism. Its chapters, written by leading international scholars, demonstrate how issues of heterogeneity, transnationalism, and intersectionality have transformed understandings of historical feminism. It is no longer possible to imagine that feminism has ever fostered an unproblematic sisterhood among women blind to race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, nationality and citizenship status. The chapters in this collection modify the "wave" metaphor in some cases and in others re-periodize it. By studying individual movements, they collectively address several themes that advance our understandings of the history of feminism, such as the rejection of "hegemonic" feminism by marginalized feminist groups, transnational linkages among women’s organizations, transnational flows of ideas and transnational migration.

    Description: Ni école, ni courant clairement identifié, le « nuevo teatro español » rassemble un groupe hétérogène d'auteurs dramatiques espagnols nés entre 1922 et 1942-1944 qu'anime la volonté d'écrire un théâtre en liberté, théâtre de résistance et de subversion esthétiques et politiques, dans le contexte « agonique » de la dernière décennie du franquisme. Les symboles, les valeurs, la langue et les rituels du franquisme sont particulièrement mis à mal dans des cérémonials sacrificiels et sadomasochistes, ludiques et parodiques, où la passion du pouvoir trouve à s'exprimer à travers les scénarios fantasmatiques les plus délirants et transgressifs. Au cours de véritables bacchanales théâtrales et linguistiques, ces auteurs mêlent les figures carnavalesques, christiques et dionysiaques comme conjuration du théâtre mortifère de la scène franquiste où les cérémonials se succèdent : cérémonials de l'auto-glorification de l'autocrate, défilés commémoratifs (18 juillet), cérémonials sacrificiels (répression, torture, exécutions), scénographies urbaines et monumentales grandioses. Défini tantôt comme théâtre underground, tantôt comme théâtre « symboliste », il est surtout un théâtre rituel grotesque néobaroque au ton blasphématoire et à l'esprit d'insolence et de désobéissance. Sont étudiés ici les univers dramaturgiques de quatre de ces auteurs qui participent à la fois de ces trois ordres esthético-politiques : Luis Riaza (1925), Francisco Nieva (1927), Antonio Martínez Ballesteros (1929) et Miguel Romero Esteo (1930).

    Description: Creative Spaces: Urban Culture and Marginality is an interdisciplinary exploration of the different ways in which marginal urban spaces have become privileged locations for creativity in Latin America. The essays within the collection reassess dominant theoretical notions of ‘marginality’ in the region and argue that, in contemporary society, it invariably allows for (if not leads to) the production of the new. While Latin American cities have, since their foundation, always included marginal spaces (due, for example, to the segregation of indigenous groups), the massive expansion of informal housing constructed on occupied land in the second half of the twentieth century have brought them into the collective imaginary like never before. Originally viewed as spaces of deprivation, violence, and dangerous alterity, the urban margins were later romanticized as spaces of opportunity and popular empowerment. Instead, this volume analyses the production of new art forms, political organizations and subjectivities emerging from the urban margins in Latin America, neither condemning nor idealizing the effects they produce. To account for the complex nature of contemporary urban marginality, the volume draws on research from a wide spectrum of disciplines, ranging from cultural and urban studies to architecture and sociology. Thus the collection analyzes how these different conceptions of marginal spaces work together and contribute to the imagined and material reality of the wider city.

    Description: This chapter examines the writings of the renowned late-eighteenth-century Moroccan ambassador Ibn Uthmân Al-Meknassî, the first known traveller from his country to leave an account of European quarantine as experienced during his two diplomatic missions in Spain’s Ceuta (1779) and Malta’s Valletta (1782). It shows that quarantine, on the one hand, acted as a marker of otherness by which Ibn Othman was identified as a Muslim, though this was not a uniform process, owing to the fact that significant differences existed in the degree of alterity experienced in Spain and Malta, and indeed other parts of the Mediterranean. The subjective opinion on quarantine, on the other hand, was also one of the means through which Ibn Uthmân situated himself within Makhzen (Moroccan government) elites at a time when a division between those who declared themselves in favour of European-style modernisation and those who advocated a rejection of European novelties was already visible.

    Description: "An Equal Burden forms the first scholarly study of the Army Medical Services in the First World War to focus on the roles and experiences of the men of the ranks of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). These men, through their work as stretcher bearers and orderlies, provided a range of labour, both physical and emotional, in aid of the sick and wounded. They were not professional medical caregivers, yet were called upon to provide medical care, however rudimentary; they served in uniform, under military discipline, yet were forbidden, as non-combatants, from carrying weapons. Their service as men in wartime, was thus unique. Structured both chronologically and thematically, this study examines both the work that RAMC rankers undertook and its importance to the running of the chain of medical evacuation. It additionally explores the gendered status of these men within the medical, military and cultural hierarchies of a society engaged in total war, locating their service within the context of that of doctors, female nurses and combatant servicemen. Through close readings of official documents, personal papers, and cultural representations, both verbal and visual, it argues that the ranks of the RAMC formed a space in which non-commissioned servicemen, through their many roles, defined and redefined medical caregiving as men’s work in wartime."

    Description: Ancient Rome has always been considered a compendium of City and World. In the Renaissance, an era of epistemic fractures, when the clash between the 'new science' (Copernicus, Galileo, Vesalius, Bacon, etcetera) and the authority of ancient texts produced the very notion of modernity, the extended and expanding geography of ancient Rome becomes, for Shakespeare and the Elizabethans, a privileged arena in which to question the nature of bodies and the place they hold in a changing order of the universe. Drawing on the rich scenario provided by Shakespeare's Rome, and adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the authors of this volume address the way in which the different bodies of the earthly and heavenly spheres are re-mapped in Shakespeare's time and in early modern European culture. More precisely, they investigate the way bodies are fashioned to suit or deconstruct a culturally articulated system of analogies between earth and heaven, microcosm and macrocosm. As a whole, this collection brings to the fore a wide range of issues connected to the Renaissance re-mapping of the world and the human. It should interest not only Shakespeare scholars but all those working on the interaction between sciences and humanities.

Et si la mélancolie des motifs funèbres et des Vanités a bien sa place dans cette fable anthropologique et esthétique, la tonalité qui s’en dégage est à l’opposé : rarement ouvrage érudit aura été comme celui-ci soulevé par une écriture aussi limpide et jubilatoire pour dire l’avènement moderne des morts-vivants.

    Description: In Uneven Encounters, Micol Seigel chronicles the exchange of popular culture between Brazil and the United States in the years between the World Wars, and demonstrates how that exchange affected ideas of race and nation in both countries. From Americans interpreting advertisements for Brazilian coffee or dancing the Brazilian maxixe, to Rio musicians embracing the “foreign” qualities of jazz, Seigel traces a lively, cultural back and forth. Along the way, she shows how race and nation for both elites and non-elites are constructed together, and driven by global cultural and intellectual currents as well as local, regional, and national ones. Seigel explores the circulation of images of Brazilian coffee and of maxixe in the United States during the period just after the imperial expansions of the early twentieth century. Exoticist interpretations structured North Americans’ paradoxical sense of themselves as productive “consumer citizens.” Some people, however, could not simply assume the privileges of citizenship. In their struggles against racism, Afro-descended citizens living in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, New York, and Chicago encountered images and notions of each other, and found them useful. Seigel introduces readers to cosmopolitan Afro-Brazilians and African Americans who rarely traveled far from home but who nonetheless absorbed ideas from abroad. She suggests that studies comparing U.S. and Brazilian racial identities as two distinct constructions are misconceived. Racial formation transcends national borders; attempts to understand it must do the same.

La relation critique du peintre et du poète, du visible et du lisible conduit à une interrogation en acte sur les modalités de l’écriture - sujet, temps, espace - et de la lecture. L’analyse proposée tente de rendre sensibles les coordonnées d’une expérience de la création littéraire confrontée à son alter ego, et celles d’une expérience à la fois du pouvoir et de la fragilité des critères d’identification de l’objet littéraire : sujet et objet, fictionnel et référentiel, récit et discours. Lire Henri Matisse, roman, c’est éprouver en même temps l’éclatement de l’écrit dans son contact avec l’inassimilable, et la persistance, au delà des ruptures, d’un discours inspiré. Le livre rassemble les décombres d’un grand édifice national et les transforme en chantier d’une œuvre littéraire désormais impossible.

    Description: Depuis la gouvernance de Marie de Hongrie, les Gouverneurs généraux chargés de l’administration de nos provinces avaient pour habitude de s’installer à Bruxelles. Pour leur confort et celui de l’importante Cour qui les entourait, le Souverain avait mis à leur disposition l’ensemble de ses biens immobiliers en Brabant. Ces châteaux, maisons, parcs, viviers et autres étaient entretenus à grands frais par une institution spécialement mise en place dans ce but : le Bureau des ouvrages de la Cour. Méconnu jusqu’à présent, cet organisme constituait toutefois une pièce maîtresse dans l’organisation de la vie quotidienne de la Cour de Bruxelles. Les compétences de cette institution ainsi que le personnel qui la composait ont été étudiés à partir des instructions et règlements édictés pour ce département. Ces directives ont ensuite été confrontées aux activités quotidiennes du Bureau pour déterminer dans quelle mesure elles étaient appliquées et/ou adaptées. Enfin, les difficultés éprouvées par ce département dans la gestion de ses affaires ont également été analysées. Grâce à cette étude, un portrait relativement complet du Bureau des ouvrages de la Cour a donc pu être dressé, permettant ainsi de le situer parmi les autres institutions centrales du gouvernement autrichien.

Il en examine les fonctionnements dans les formes circonscrites des objets écrits. L'analyse de textes littéraires ou de films qui appartiennent pour l'essentiel à la culture italienne, quels que soient les stades de leur conception ou de leur publication (ébauche, manuscrit de travail, copie au net, ouvrage édité, réécriture), dessine une typologie des inachèvements. Le livre se penche sur les reprises ou migrations de fragments textuels ; il analyse la volonté d'« inachever » qui parfois informe l'œuvre, voire la continuation imposée à un texte qu'il faut alors, de fait, considérer comme inachevé.

    Description: Remains of the Social is an interdisciplinary volume of essays that engages with what ‘the social’ might mean after apartheid; a condition referred to as ‘the post-apartheid social’. The volume grapples with apartheid as a global phenomenon that extends beyond the borders of South Africa between 1948 and 1994 and foregrounds the tension between the weight of lived experience that was and is apartheid, the structures that condition that experience and a desire for a ‘post-apartheid social’ (think unity through difference). Collectively, the contributors argue for a recognition of the ‘the post-apartheid’ as a condition that names the labour of coming to terms with the ordering principles that apartheid both set in place and foreclosed. The volume seeks to provide a sense of the terrain on which ‘the post-apartheid’ - as a desire for a difference that is not apartheid’s difference - unfolds, falters and is worked through.

    Description: This chapter explores the transmission of tales of the supernatural during the very long eighteenth century (between c.1660 and c.1832). A genre of publications on this subject which have not been studied are those anthologies of supposedly true stories, usually relating to named people and places and sometimes dated, often each numbered separately, with relatively little discussion of their authenticity or significance, beyond perhaps a brief preface defending the reality of the world of spirits. A series of entrepreneurial publishers, mostly operating from Paternoster Row in London, experimented with anthologising these stories in varied combinations. Any attempt to analyse the stories must begin by unravelling the publishing history by which they were transmitted and (not fully studied here) modified and retold, as well as re-interpreted.

    Description: Ce manuscrit inédit a été rédigé par une jeune femme de 22 ans lorsqu’elle partit avec son époux à la rencontre du prétendant légitimiste, le comte de Chambord : elle traverse le royaume lombard-vénitien, alors sous la domination des Habsbourg, et séjourne assez longuement à Venise, puis elle rentre en France par l’Autriche et l’Allemagne. C’est un texte à l’écriture vive et enjouée, mariant avec bonheur récit, descriptions et anecdotes, et un document de tout premier intérêt pour la connaissance de la « bonne société » française du milieu du xixe siècle. L’annotation et le commentaire qui l’accompagnent mettent notamment en valeur ses éclairages sur l’histoire du couple (car la vogue des voyages de noces était alors très récente) et sur l’histoire des milieux monarchistes, avec leurs valeurs et leur sociabilité, mais ils insistent aussi sur l’écriture au féminin, à la fois écriture de soi et perception des pays visités.

To fill the gap, this bookreconstructs the most important factors in childhood in Byzantium from the 6th through the 11th century. The main sources are the lives of the saints, which are of central importance for the analysis of the social history and daily life of the population.     Description: Neste livro abre-se a uma diversidade de acepções que o conceito de espaço abriga nos objetos e cenários literários contemporâneos. O próprio texto como um espaço espacializante, na sua textualidade como corpo ou na visualidade da escrita, configura um espaço de linguagem. O contexto cultural e histórico envolve referências e dados situados em determinados momentos que articulam um espaço de relações com o texto literário. O espaço da institucionalização, com as representações de poder, o espaço social, o espaço como paisagem, nas configurações natural, regional, física e psicológica, e o espaço do mito com suas imagens e sentidos simbólicos, são outras formas de mobilização do conceito. O espaço pictórico, quer como elemento componente da pintura ou como a própria linguagem na composição da escritura, que se vale de técnicas plásticas, também é contemplado, assim como esse tipo de diálogo abriga outros meios e linguagens, como o cinema, a propaganda, a fotografia, nas relações entre as artes. Há também a possibilidade de se rever o objeto literário, em termos de espacialidade, sob essa perspectiva múltipla do olhar contemporâneo. Ou seja, no lugar daquele sentido restrito de categoria estrutural, o conceito incorpora uma visão ampla e metafórica, dentro da qual o próprio texto faz emergir uma concepção e função da espacialidade por meio de suas estratégias de construção. Diante de tantas possibilidades de leitura do conceito, o presente livro reúne textos que abordam aspectos da simbolização espacial em obras literárias que implicam um olhar contemporâneo para essas figurações.
