    Description: Diese literaturgeschichtliche Arbeit führt erstmals auf breiter Quellenbasis den empirischen Nachweis, dass Leser/-innen beim außerwissenschaftlichen Umgang mit Literatur in Geschichte und Gegenwart Applikationen vornehmen. Es wird gezeigt, welche Formen eine solche Applikation annehmen kann, und dass es sich um eine relevante Praktik handelt. Unter ‚Applikation‘ ist eine Tätigkeit im Rahmen des Rezeptionsprozesses zu verstehen, bei welcher Leser/-innen das Gelesene auf ihre persönlichen oder lebensweltlichen Erfahrungen, Überzeugungen und Einstellungen beziehen. Das Ergebnis dieser Bezugnahme, welches ebenfalls ‚Applikation‘ heißt, kann sein, dass sie neue Überzeugungen und Einstellungen bilden, bestehende verändern oder verwerfen. Um Existenz, Beschaffenheit und Relevanz des Phänomens zu belegen, wurde eine Fülle an Rezeptionsdokumenten ausgewertet. Sie geben Auskunft über die Erstrezeption von neun Romanen aus vier Jahrhunderten, die das literarische Korpus der Arbeit bilden, darunter Goethes Werther, Manns Buddenbrooks und Schlinks Der Vorleser. Die Arbeit beleuchtet eine wichtige, in der bisherigen rezeptionsgeschichtlichen Forschung nicht hinreichend beachtete Praktik des außerwissenschaftlichen Umgangs mit Literatur.

    Description: Since the beginning of the 19th century, quantitative techniques have been used in literary and human sciences to describe, analyze and interpret texts. Such approaches were underrepresented until the end of the 20th century, but are becoming increasingly important in the digital humanities. The aim of the volume is to contextualize theories of theory, methodology and subject history on the one hand, and on the other hand to examine the significance of their results with a view to the digital present. In view of the innovative verve of digital humanities, it should not be forgotten that the idea of ​​juxtaposing interpretive close reading with descriptive-analytical, remote reading is not much younger than the idea of ​​close reading itself. Counting is by no means the first through the 'digital revolution' of the humanities. Rather, what has been determined by late Dilthey as the subject of the understanding and qualitatively oriented humanities has been declared 'measurable' for some 200 years.
    Description: Seit Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts werden in den Literatur- und Geisteswissenschaften quantitative Verfahren angewandt, um Texte zu beschreiben, zu analysieren und zu interpretieren. Bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts waren solche Ansätze unterrepräsentiert, gewinnen im Zuge der Digital Humanities jedoch sehr stark an Bedeutung. Ziel des Bandes ist es, quantifizierende Verfahren einerseits theorie-, methoden- und fachgeschichtlich zu kontextualisieren, andererseits aber auch mit Blick auf die digitale Gegenwart zu prüfen, welchen Stellenwert ihre Ergebnisse haben. Angesichts der innovativen Verve der Digital Humanities darf nicht vergessen werden, dass die Idee, einem interpretativen close reading ein (vermeintlich?) deskriptiv-analytisches distant reading gegenüberzustellen, nicht sehr viel jünger ist als die Idee des close reading selbst. Denn Zählen ist keinesfalls erst durch die 'digitale Revolution' der Geisteswissenschaften denkbar geworden. Vielmehr wird schon seit ungefähr 200 Jahren das, was vom späten Dilthey als Gegenstand der verstehenden und qualitativ orientierten Geisteswissenschaften bestimmt wurde, auch zum 'messbaren' Objekt erklärt.

    Description: The well-known challenges of international migration have triggered new departures in academic approaches, with 'diaspora studies' evolving as an interdisciplinary and even transdisciplinary field of study. Its emerging methodology shares concerns with another interdisciplinary field, the study of the relations between law and literature, which focuses on the ways in which the two cultural practices of law and literature mutually negotiate each other and on the question after the ontological commensurability of the domains.     Description: The study examines cultural effects of various colonial systems of government in the Spanish- and French-speaking Caribbean in a little investigated period of transition: from the French Revolution to the abolition of slavery in Cuba (1789–1886). The comparison of cultural transfer processes by means of literary production from and about the Caribbean, embedded in a broader context of the circulation of culture and knowledge deciphers the different transculturations of European discourses in the colonies as well as the repercussions of these transculturations on the motherland’s ideas of the colonial other: The loss of a culturally binding centre in the case of the Spanish colonies – in contrast to France’s strong presence and binding force – is accompanied by a multirelationality which increasingly shapes hispanophone Caribbean literature and promotes the pursuit for political independence. The book provides necessary revision to the idea that the 19th-century Caribbean can only be understood as an outpost of the European metropolises. Examining the kaleidoscope of the colonial Caribbean opens new insights into the early processes of cultural globalisation and questions our established concept of a genuine western modernity.     Description: The poetry of Ruan Ji has been previously translated several times, with one fully scholarly translation of both the poetry and the Fu (poetic expositions). The present translation not only provides a facing page critical Chinese text, it addresses two problems that have been ignored or not adequately treated in earlier works. First, it traces the history of the current text. The rather serious problems with this text will be, if not soluble, at least visible. Second, translations have been shaped by the anachronistic assumption that Ruan Ji was loyal to the declining Wei dynasty, when actual power had been taken by the Suma family, who founded the Jin dynasty after Ruan Ji's death. The introduction shows how and when that assumption took full shape five centuries after Ruan Ji lived and why it is not tenable. This leads to a different kind of translation, closer to what a contemporary reader might have understood and far less certain than referring it to some political event. The Poetry of Xi Kang presents a complete scholarly translation of his poetic works (including "Rhapsody on the Zither") alongside the original texts. Many of Xi Kang's poems are difficult and most are laden with allusions and quotations, adding another level of challenge to interpretation. Basic explanatory notes are provided. The translations are based on the critical modern edition of Xi Kang's work by Dai Mingyang, generally considered to be the best edition available. Important editions by Lu Xun and Lu Qinli are consulted on matters of variants, arrangement, and interpretation.

The starting point is Vilém Flusser's conviction that migration experience and cultural innovation should be closely linked. France became the world's second most important immigration country after the United States in the interwar period. Authors came to the French metropolis from Eastern Europe, after the strengthening of the fascists from Italy, after 1933 from Germany, after the Spanish Civil War and after the consolidation of the Estado Novo in Portugal. Artists from Latin America were also present in Paris, and the Congrès international des écrivains pour la défense de la culture in June 1935 made the city the centre of intellectual resistance to fascism. But writers from all over the world also migrated to France after the Second World War.     Description: The Complete Poetry of Du Fu presents a complete scholarly translation of Chinese literature alongside the original text in a critical edition. The English translation is more scholarly than vernacular Chinese translations, and it is compelled to address problems that even the best traditional commentaries overlook.The main body of the text is a facing page translation and critical edition of the earliest Song editions and other sources. For convenience the translations are arranged following the sequence in Qiu Zhao’an’s Du shi xiangzhu (although Qiu’s text is not followed). Basic footnotes are included when the translation needs clarification or supplement. Endnotes provide sources, textual notes, and a limited discussion of problem passages. A supplement references commonly used allusions, their sources, and where they can be found in the translation.Scholars know that there is scarcely a Du Fu poem whose interpretation is uncontested. The scholar may use this as a baseline to agree or disagree. Other readers can feel confident that this is a credible reading of the text within the tradition. A reader with a basic understanding of the language of Chinese poetry can use this to facilitate reading Du Fu, which can present problems for even the most learned reader.
