Anhand der Analyse politisch-medialer Diskurse legt sie den gesellschaftlichen Wandel im Umgang mit Freiwilligenarbeit seit den 1980er Jahren offen und beleuchtet die Deutungs- und Institutionalisierungskämpfe zwischen verschiedenen Interessengruppen. Es zeigt sich: Die Herausbildung einer staatlichen Engagementpolitik war keinesfalls zwangsläufig.

    Description: As a world religion Islam is based on a highly abstract and absolute notion of the transcendent, which its followers establish and celebrate - in a seemingly contradictory fashion - at very specific sites: Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, and the vast and complex landscapes of mosques and Muslim saints' shrines around the world. Sacred locality has thus become a paradigm for the relationship between the human and the transcendent, a model for urban planning, regional networks, imaginary spaces, and spiritual hierarchies alike. This importance of saintly places has, however, become increasingly complicated and troubled by reformist currents within Islam, on the one hand, and the emergence of modern archeology and anthropology, on the other. While they have often tended to posit 'the local' in opposition to 'the universal', in this volume islamologists, anthropologists, and sociologists offer new ways of thinking about the local, the place, and the conceptual landscapes and spaces of saints. In this, its eighth volume, the Yearbook for the Sociology of Islam looks at different sites and regions around the Muslim world (notably Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Southeast Asia) not as 'localized' versions of a universal Islam, but as constitutive of one particular outlook of the universalizing order of a world religion.

Die zentrale Perspektive der Arbeit wendet sich ab von der nostalgischen und zu einfach konzipierten Lehre vom reinen Verlust des Körpers in der Moderne und betont stattdessen die paradoxe Gleichzeitigkeit von Körperdistanzierung und Körperaufwertung im Verlauf der sozio-kulturellen Evolution. Die Arbeit thematisiert damit nicht nur Zeichen, die die Gesellschaft am Körper setzt, sondern folgt auch jenen Spuren, die der Körper in Gestalt körperorientierter Sozialsysteme und Semantiken in der Gesellschaft hinterlässt. Die »Körperspuren« liegen hier in einer überarbeiteten und erheblich ergänzten zweiten Auflage vor.; The body is currently being redefined and explored in the architecture of its forms and in the depth of its structures and processes. Karl-Heinrich Bette's work, which has meanwhile become the standard work in the sociology of the body, shows how more and more people are resorting to their physical-organic environment in the context of sport, leisure, fashion, health orientation or protest culture in order to intercept or critically comment on the overburdening consequences of the process of social modernization. The central perspective of the work turns away from the nostalgic and too simply conceived doctrine of the pure loss of the body in modernity and instead emphasizes the paradoxical simultaneity of body distance and body enhancement in the course of socio-cultural evolution. The work thus not only addresses the issues that society sets on the body, but also follows the traces that the body leaves behind in society in the form of body-oriented social systems and semantics. »Traces of the Body« is presented here in a revised and considerably supplemented second edition.

Following the sociology of knowledge tradition and taking Critical Realism as a meta-theoretical framework, Xiaoxue Gao takes relational spatial theories as traveling conceptual knowledge and develops meaningful and context-sensitive ways of engaging them in studying the complex urban phenomenon in China. She offers conceptual elucidations and methodological roadmaps, which leap productively from employing plural causal hypotheses to generating effect-based explanations for locally observable events. They are exemplified by manifold interrogations of Beijing's Artworld as a conjuncture of particular events.

Die Studie zeichnet nach, wie die wachsende Partizipation sichtbarer Muslime, hier symbolisiert durch das Kopftuch, im dominanten Diskurs beider Länder Abwehrreaktionen provoziert und der Islam mehrheitlich als Gegenkategorie zu jeweils national geprägten Säkularitätskonzepten begriffen wird. Zugleich zeigt sie, wie die jungen Frauen in die Diskurstraditionen beider Länder eingebettet sind und sich in komplexen Aushandlungsprozessen engagieren.

Im Unterschied dazu rückt die Publikation von Margret Spohn die türkischen Männer der ersten Migrantengeneration explizit in den Mittelpunkt der Analysen, wo sie als »Experten ihrer eigenen Geschichte« ausführlich selbst zu Wort kommen. Das feine Geflecht der hier erzählten und sensibel interpretierten Lebensgeschichten gibt Raum für die Reflexionen der Befragten über ihr Verhältnis zu den eigenen Eltern, zur Ehefrau, zu den Kindern und zu ihrem Leben in »zwei Heimaten«. Damit liefert die Arbeit einen Schlüssel zu einem besseren Verständnis der Männer dieser Migrantengeneration, die vor fast einem halben Jahrhundert das Wagnis auf sich genommen haben, sich und ihren Familien in einem fremden Land eine Zukunft aufzubauen.

    Description: Cities have always been arenas of social and symbolic conflict. As places of encounter between different classes, ethnic groups, and lifestyles, cities play the role of powerful integrators; yet on the other hand urban contexts are the ideal setting for marginalization and violence. The struggle over control of urban spaces is an ambivalent mode of sociation: while producing themselves, groups produce exclusive spaces and then, in turn, use the boundaries they have created to define themselves. This volume presents major urban conflicts and analyzes modes of negotiation against the theoretical background of postcolonialism.

Auf diese Weise entwickeln sich postmigrantische, mehrheimische, hybride und transkulturelle Alltagspraktiken, die bisher kaum gewürdigt worden sind. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes verstehen sich daher als Plädoyer für eine andere Sicht der Dinge und als Absage an das vorauseilende Misstrauen, mit dem migrationsbedingten Phänomenen häufig begegnet wird. Diese auf einer empirischen Untersuchung basierende Studie setzt dagegen die These, dass Leistung nicht unabhängig von der Anerkennung der im wissenschaftlichen Feld etablierten Akteure als funktionales, »objektives« Prinzip existiert, sondern innerhalb sozialer Prozesse individuell zugeschrieben und hergestellt wird. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird auch die Frage beleuchtet, wie es dazu kommt, dass wesentlich mehr männliche als weibliche Aspiranten die akademische Karriere fortsetzen. Der Blick richtet sich dabei weder auf »subjektive Laufbahnen« noch auf »objektive Strukturen«. Untersucht wird vielmehr die alltägliche Praxis des wissenschaftlichen Feldes, die sich im praktischen Sinn, der illusio der Akteure, widerspiegelt. Damit schließt die Studie an Pierre Bourdieus Untersuchungen des wissenschaftlichen Feldes an und ergänzt diese um neue Gesichtspunkte.

Er erkundet das Terrain der Bewußtseinsfrage - im Zusammenhang mit wichtigen Anrainerbegriffen wie eben Person, Psyche, Individuum - auf dem Niveau und mit den Mitteln der Systemtheorie, also einer der Theorien, die den Eigenwert des Bewußtseins massiv zu bedrohen scheinen. Der Begriff der individuellen Signatur und ihrer Gegenzeichnung wird in aller Vorläufigkeit herangezogen, um den Raum der Diskussion des Problems zu öffnen.

    Description: Mit Michel Foucaults folgenreichem Diktum vom Verschwinden des Subjekts begann die Erfolgsgeschichte des Diskursbegriffs, der seit einigen Jahren auch in der Soziologie an Bedeutung gewinnt, insofern er der »Materialität« und Eigendynamik von Kultur Rechnung trägt. Diese Einführung behandelt zunächst die diskurstheoretische Untergrabung strukturalistischer Leitlinien. Anschließend werden zentrale Begriffe wie »Dekonstruktion«, »Genealogie«, »diskursive Praktiken« und »Performativität« geklärt, um dann den Komplex »Macht-Wissen-Körper-Subjekt« in seiner gesellschaftstheoretischen Dimension in den Blick zu nehmen. Der Text revidiert im Anschluss an Foucault und Butler eine Auffassung von Gesellschaft als gleichsam »äußerer« Macht, die einseitig auf ein Individuum einwirkt, und ersetzt diese Auffassung durch eine Konzeption von Gesellschaft, die dem Individuum eine soziale Existenz zuallererst gewährt und sich, wie das Subjekt, performativ konstituiert.

Robotic Knitting re-negotiates the boundaries between formalisation and embodiment, craft and high-tech as well as useful and dysfunctional machines. It re-crafts the nature of collaboration between human and robot. This finally entails an alternative mode of relating - a mode that enables an account of careful coboting.
