    Description: During glacial/interglacial cycles, changes in the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) modified the intermediate and deep-water mass proportions and high latitude productivity in the Atlantic Ocean. These factors influence the distribution and geochemical partitioning of trace metals in the ocean. Mercury is a redox and productivity-sensitive trace metal, making it a potential proxy of paleoenvironmental changes. Therefore, this work examines the effect of Atlantic Ocean circulation changes during the last two glacial/interglacial cycles on the biogeochemistry of Hg. For this, a high-resolution record of the total Hg concentration was determined in core GL-1090 collected from the Southwestern Subtropical Atlantic that represents the last 185 thousand years. During the reported glacial/interglacial cycles, Hg showed a distinct trend throughout Marine Isotope Stages with higher concentrations during periods of enhanced penetration of northern component water into the southwestern Atlantic. This is supported by the similarity of mercury variability with benthic foraminifera δ¹³C, suggesting a strong influence of deep ocean circulation on the availability and accumulation of this metal in deep-sea sediments. Mercury geochemistry and particle scavenging were correlated with organic matter (OM) input at the core site. We also noted that mercury responded to redox variation in sediment after Termination II, which can be explained by the increase in deep ocean ventilation due to AMOC strengthening. This hypothesis was confirmed by the antiphase behavior of Hg and Total Organic Carbon when compared with Mn/Al ratios and CaCO3. Our work, therefore, allows for a better understanding of the processes leading to long-term mercury removal to sediments.

    Description: We present station-specific depth integrated abundance and biomass of Calanus spp. (stage-specific abundance, CI-CVI, of C. finmarchicus, C. glacialis, C. hyperboreus and combined biomass of late stages, CIV-CVI, of Calanus spp.) collected from zooplankton monitoring programs from 19 subregions spanning the Newfoundland and Labrador Shelves, Gulf of St. Lawrence (GSL), Scotian Shelf, and Gulf of Maine (GoM). These data span years 1999-2016, except the southwest GSL subregion (1982-2016) and GoM (1977-2016). We also present data on near surface and bottom temperature and salinity from subregions in Canadian waters. We then present derived annual anomalies of abundance of the three species of Calanus, their combined biomass, and near surface and bottom temperature and salinity from all subregions. This is a contribution by Canadian and USA scientists and their institutions. Sampling and data processing methods are provided in detail in Sorochan et al. (2019), and zooplankton sampling methods are summarized here. Zooplankton samples from the southwest GSL subregion were collected from the DFO mackerel egg production survey (Mackerel Survey) using a 0.61-m diameter bongo frame (0.333-µm mesh) towed obliquely to the surface from a maximum sampling depth that varied among years, but was usually 〉 50 m. All other samples from Canadian waters were collected as part of the DFO Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) using a 0.75-m diameter ring net (202-µm mesh) towed vertically to the surface from a depth of ~ 5 m above bottom or a maximum depth of 1000 m. Samples from the GoM were collected from the NOAA Marine Resources Monitoring, Assessment and Prediction and Ecosystem Monitoring Surveys (EcoMon), which used the same gear as the Mackerel Survey, but sampled from a depth of ~ 5 m above bottom or a maximum depth of 200 m. These data were supplemented with surveys from the western GoM, which used sampling methods identical to AZMP. When samples were not collected from near bottom to surface in the Mackerel Survey and EcoMon, the data were adjusted using a Generalized Additive Model to estimate the depth integrated abundance or biomass from near to bottom to surface. Annual anomalies correspond to those published in Sorochan et al. (2019) with exception of abundance and biomass of Calanus spp. from the GoM and southwest GSL, which have been slightly modified to reflect updates on the data inclusion and standardization. We also note that the linear model used to derive anomalies of Calanus spp. abundance and biomass in the GoM uses Month as a factor rather than Season, which was incorrectly reported in Table 3 of Sorochan et al. (2019).

    Description: The taxonomic structure of the phytoplankton groups from the CTD stations during PS 92 were calculated from marker pigment ratios using the CHEMTAX program (Mackey et al, 1996). Pigment ratios were constrained as suggested by Higgins et al. (2011) based on microscopic examination of representative samples during the cruise, and the input matrix published by Fragoso et al. (2016) was applied. The resulting group composition is represented as percentage.

    Description: Laboratory-reared stage C5 copepodites of the marine calanoid copepod Calanus finmarchicus were used to test the effects of temperature (at 6°C, 12°C and increasing temperature stress from 6-12°C) and prey type (the dinoflagellate Heterocapsa triquetra, abbreviated "Het", and the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii, abbreviated "Tw") on the extent and efficiency of dietary EPA and DHA incorporation from phytoplankton to copepods in a set of feeding experiments using 13C labelling. These data depict ingestion, incorporation and gross growth efficiency (GGE), defined as the fraction of ingested EFAs retained in copepod tissue, of both EFAs in different temperature treatments in 8-day laboratory feeding experiments.

Experimental islands and saltmarsh enclosed plots were created in the back barrier tidal flat and in the saltmarsh zone of the island of Spiekeroog. Meteorological data were collected near the experimental setup, with a locally installed weather station located approximately 500m north of the southern shoreline. The weather station system used here was a ClimaSensor US 4.920x.00.00x that was pre-calibrated by the manufacturer (Adolf Thies GmbH & Co. KG, D-Göttingen). Data were recorded and saved within the Meteo-Online (V4.5.0.20253) software in a sampling interval of 1 min, with an averaging time of 10 s. Date and time were given in UTC and the position was derived from the internal GPS system. Data handling was performed according to Zielinski et al. (2018, doi:10.5194/essd-10-1843-2018): Post-processing of collected data was done using MATLAB (R2018a). Quality control was performed by (a) erasing data covering maintenance activities, (b) removing outliers, defined as data exhibiting changes of more than two standard deviations within one time step, and (c) visually checks.

    Description: Data presented here were collected during the cruise HE516 with RV HEINCKE from Bremerhaven, Germany to Bremerhaven, Germany (July 17th, 2018 - August 15th, 2018). In total, 169 underwater light profiles were collected at 75 stations (with at least three repititions), using a free-falling hyperspectral light profiler. The system used was a SEABIRD HyperPro II (SN 189, former Satlantic), equipped with a irradiance sensor to measure downwelling irradiance (Ed, SN 532) and a radiance sensor for upwelling radiance (Lu, SN 421). A reference unit was attached to the ship to measure the above water irradiance (Es, SN 533). The sensors were calibrated by the manufacturer and validated prior to the cruise with a reference lamp. Data were recorded with the SatView software (V 2.9.5_7) and processed from raw to Level1, 1b, 2, 2s to Level 3a using the ProSoft Processing software (V 7.7.19_2). Measured data were binned in 0.5 m depth intervals. A dark correction was made automatically based on shutter measurements by the instrument. Measurements with a tilt higher than 10° were not taken into account during processing. Spectra were interpolated to 1 nm intervals. For each station the hyperspectral profiles for each parameter cover the wavelength range from 400-700 nm, for Ed and Es in [W/m² nm], for Lu in [W/m² nm sr]. For Ed, Lu and Es descriptive statistics are given including min, max, mean, median and standard deviation of the tilt and the photosynthetically active radiation PAR [µmol photons/m² s (sr)], integrated from 400 - 700 nm. Experimental islands and saltmarsh enclosed plots were created in the back barrier tidal flat and in the saltmarsh zone of the island of Spiekeroog. Local tide and wave conditions were recorded with a RBRduo TDǀwave sensor (RBR Ltd., Ontario/Canada). The sensor was bottom mounted in a shallow tidal creek (0.71 / 0.78 m NHN) through a steel girder (buried 0.3m deep in the sediment) and was positioned 10 cm above sediment surface, as was determined by using a portable differential GPS. This resulted in the sensor falling dry during low tide. For accurate depth calculations, raw pressure data were manually corrected for atmospheric pressure derived from a locally installed weather station. The sensor was pre-calibrated by the manufacturer and the sampling rate was 3 Hz with 1024 samples per burst at a sample interval of 10 min. Recorded data were internally logged until the readout with the Ruskin (V1.13.13) software. Date and time is given in UTC. Data handling was performed according to Zielinski et al. (2018): Post-processing of collected data was done using MATLAB (R2018a). Quality control was performed by (a) erasing data covering maintenance activities, (b) removing outliers, and (c) visually checks. Low-tide data is not removed, but were easily identified through the manually calculated water depth data, where all depths 〈 0.05m represented low tide data.

    Description: Data presented here were collected between January 2019 to December 2019 within the research unit DynaCom (Spatial community ecology in highly dynamic landscapes: From island biogeography to metaecosystems, https://uol.de/dynacom/ ) of the Universities of Oldenburg, Göttingen, and Münster, the iDiv Leipzig and the Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer. Experimental islands and saltmarsh enclosed plots were created in the back barrier tidal flat and in the saltmarsh zone of the island of Spiekeroog. Temperature in the sediment surface layer (in approximately 0.05m depth) was measured with DEFI-T miniature temperature recorders (JFE Advantech Co., Ltd., Tokyo; DEFI-T). The manufacturer pre-calibrated temperature recorders and were installed on the experimental islands and in salt-marsh enclosed plots at different elevation levels. Recorded data were internally logged until the readout with the DEFI Series software (V1.02). The position was derived from a portable DGPS-system. Date and Time is given in UTC. Data handling was performed according to Zielinski et al. (2018): Post-processing of collected data was done using MATLAB (R2018a). Quality control was performed by (a) erasing data covering maintenance activities, (b) removing outliers, defined as data exhibiting changes of more than two standard deviations within one time step, and (c) visually checks.

Local tide and wave conditions were recorded with a RBRduo TDǀwave sensor (RBR Ltd., Ontario/Canada). The sensor was bottom mounted in a shallow tidal creek (0.78 m NHN) through a steel girder (buried 0.3m deep in the sediment) and was positioned 10 cm above sediment surface, as was determined by using a portable differential GPS. This resulted in the sensor falling dry during low tide. For accurate depth calculations, raw pressure data were manually corrected for atmospheric pressure derived from a locally installed weather station. The sensor was pre-calibrated by the manufacturer and the sampling rate was 3 Hz with 1024 samples per burst at a sample interval of 10 min. Recorded data were internally logged until the readout with the Ruskin (V1.13.13) software. Date and time is given in UTC. Data handling was performed according to Zielinski et al. (2018): Post-processing of collected data was done using MATLAB (R2018a). Quality control was performed by (a) erasing data covering maintenance activities, (b) removing outliers, and (c) visually checks. Low-tide data is not removed, but were easily identified through the manually calculated water depth data, where all depths 〈 0.05m represented low tide data.

    Description: At AWIPEV research base in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, regular radiosonde launches are operated once per day. The launch frequency may increase to 6-hourly soundings during specific campaign periods. The Vaisala RS41-SGP radiosondes provide data of pressure, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and wind direction from ground to about 30 km height. The given data set contains vertical profiles with 1-second time resolution data as obtained by the manufacturer's data processing, quality controlled for appropriate physical ranges.

    Description: This is a collection of continuous meteorological observations at Ny-Ålesund, obtained from a meteorological mast located at 11.9222° E, 78.9266° N on the observation field in the vicinity of the AWIPEV Atmosphere Observatory. Air temperature is measured by shaded and ventilated PT100 sensors at 2 m and 10 m height, and on the same levels wind speed and direction is retrieved using the Combined Wind Sensor Classic by Thies Clima. Two independent humidity sensors are detecting relative humidity at 2 m height, while station pressure is given from a sensor installed about 10m towards North. All data are provided in high temporal resolution as average over 1 minute, respectively. The data set collection will be updated regularly by new data.

The Pressure loggers were pre-calibrated by the manufacturer. Recorded data were internal logged till readout afield with the Hobo Underwater Shuttle (U-DTW-1) and following with the HOBOware Pro (V3.7.4) software or rather with the DEFI Series software (V1.02). Processing was done using MATLAB (R2018a). For depth calculations pressure data were manually corrected by atmospheric pressure. Data handling was performed according to Zielinski et al.
