    Description: The aim of scientific dissemination is to spread interest and knowledge of scientific issues by trying to reach people of all ages and social backgrounds. Simplifying, without trivializing, scientific concepts and making them attractive to the general public is therefore essential to achieve the previous objectives. For this purpose, it can be useful for scientists to work in close collaboration with artists, implementing new tools that can positively influence the emotional sphere and capture the attention of the people involved. Playful educational activity and visual language play a key role in this process, to convey interest and facilitate learning. An example of this approach are the educational laboratories structured as group games, in which great importance is given both to practical activities and to the transmission of concepts through their visualization in the form of images. Over the last 8 years, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, INGV), the Istituto di Scienze Marine del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council, CNR-ISMAR) and the Historical Oceanography Society (HOS) have collaborated in the organization of science dissemination events involving students from schools of different levels participating in educational experiences based on games, characterized by an essentially visual approach to the concepts presented. In this work, we would like to give a brief overview of these educational tools, retracing the choices made while ideating them, thanks mainly to the close collaboration with artists and illustrators.

    Description: Establishing sustainable and responsible speleotourism development is a major challenge and involves complex activities. Adequate theoretical starting point is the application of geoethical values related to the conservation and protection of the caves to be used for touristic purposes. Positive and negative cases of human behaviors towards speleological geoheritage are discussed, in order to highlight what should be done in cave management to avoid malpractices and on what elements could be founded adequate strategies aimed at promoting sustainable speleotourism. This is important to tourism management organizations involved in the promotion of caves and in creating economic opportunities for local populations, while respecting cave ecosystems. Modern cave management must be focused on the protection of the cave ecosystems, finding ways to achieve at the same time an economic development of local communities. But this approach needs the adoption of a geoethical framework of values to be shared by all stakeholders involved so that successful cooperation can be achieved despite differences in interests and expectations. The aim of this paper is to raise the awareness about the need to apply the values of geoethics to speleotourism, stimulating new fields of discussion within the scientific and technical communities involved in studies and activities related to geotourism and geoheritage. The possibilities of developing new ways to manage caves, in order to promote a sustainable socio-economic development of local communities, have to be balanced with the protection of natural environments as much as possible. The proposed theoretical frameworks have the goal to increase the discussion on the best ways of connecting speleotourism to sustainable and responsible cave management, presenting two case studies, and pointing out potential solutions.

    Description: «In senso oggettivo, il diritto è definibile come il complesso di norme giuridiche che comandano o vietano determinati comportamenti ai soggetti che ne sono destinatari», e pertanto è attraverso esso che la società pone il limite tra il lecito e l’illecito delle azioni umane e stabilisce un regime di sanzioni qualora i comportamenti violino quel limite. Il diritto è il mezzo per mettere in atto e trasformare in agire sociale una precisa visione del mondo e dei rapporti che lo determinano. Affinché l’agire sociale sia consapevole e non coatto, c’è bisogno in primis dell’educazione dei cittadini ai principi e ai valori di riferimento che sono alla base di quella visione del mondo. In tal modo la motivazione di ciò che è lecito diventa comprensibile e rafforza la consapevolezza del significato e dell’importanza di muoversi all’interno di regole e comportamenti ritenuti a vantaggio del singolo e di tutta la comunità. Educare al valore di un’azione rispettosa dell’ambiente è il solo modo per formare cittadini più responsabili, consapevoli che il gesto individuale va a inquadrarsi in una catena di azioni più ampia e articolata, e per accrescere la sensibilità e l’accettazione sociale di nuovi modelli economici più sostenibili. Il diritto sanzionatorio costituisce l’extrema ratio per salvaguardare il perimetro del lecito e in definitiva l’esistenza stessa della comunità, ma non serve a guadagnare consenso consapevole.

    Description: The earthquake occured in Tohoku (Japan) in 2011 showed that no matter how outstanding is the model of the mitigation of natural hazard, an earthquake can always surprise any studied attempt to contain a tsunami. I report this extreme example to draw the reader attention on how strong should be the commitment of the society in producing the optimal conditions to face natural hazard. Every country has a peculiar social context. If in the past we considered this as a secondary aspect, now we are obliged to recognize that the social context is of main importance when promoting mitigation of natural hazard. In this occasion I would like to refer to my experience as an educator in my country. Italy is a country where it is difficult to promote a dialogue between the Institutions and the citizens. The dialogue is difficult also among the communities of engineers, geologists and politicians. There is still a great confusion on the attribution of tasks and a lot of problems of difficult solution are related to corruption. In this context, education can play a crucial role and should be intensively addressed to promote geo-awareness in the citizens. People should learn about the geological site where their houses are built and get all the info necessary to understand if it has been done according to the law. Only in this way citizens become an active agent in promoting those changes without which an efficacious mitigation of natural hazard is impossible.

    Description: Today’s widespread diffusion of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has accelerated the access and circulation of information. Although relevant benefits have been produced thanks to the incredible spread and speed of information, on the other hand this speed has also enlarged the demand for content, causing a tremendous downfall in accuracy and veracity of information. This phenomenon is particularly visible in the domain of scientific journalism. To counteract this negative consequence, geoethics indicates engaging in science communication as one of the responsibilities of a geoscientist. However, even if the relevance of this duty is almost universally recognized, generally geoscientists lack the proper digital skills to effectively use new media. As most of the content shared and consumed on the internet is delivered through new platforms, we contend that geoscientists should be trained in specific digital skills in order to improve the effectiveness of their science communication. Within this study, firstly, the above mentioned considerations will be proven discussing the current state of scientific journalism and the relevance of teaching geoethics at higher education level. Secondly, an analysis of the most needed digital communication skills for geoscientists will be conducted. Finally, building on the results reached in the previous sections, it will be presented a suggestion on the best way to include digital skills courses within the framework of geoethics and geosciences. The innovative aspect of this research lays in its multidisciplinarity, as it links geosciences, science communication and ICTs. Moreover, as training in geoethics has not been implemented in the geosciences curricula, yet, this paper aims to spread its knowledge and provide guidelines to its implementation at Higher Education.

    Description: Geoethics is not simply professional ethics. Originally, it was developed in the context of geosciences to increase the awareness of geoscientists to their cultural and social role, but over time expanded to define a way in which humans can rethink their relationship with the Earth system in the light of principles and values that can provide a healthy and safe life in respect for geo-ecosystems. The theoretical framework of geoethics has now consolidated, and it has become the proposal on which to base a global ethics for the new millennium. This chapter outlines the scientific and cultural reference framework in which geoethics developed; the theoretical foundations of geoethics and its main characteristics; global anthropogenic issues under a geoethical perspective; ethical and social aspects related to two potential human activities respectively to combat global warming (geoengineering); and to provide for the growing demand for georesources (deep-sea/ocean mining). The authors highlight the importance of sharing values and actions among planetary human communities to manage global changes and threats. One wonders if the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic can suggest or confirm reflections on geoethical thinking. Finally, a charter for a responsible course of human development, articulated in nine principles and actions, is proposed.

    Description: Dealing with topics concerning natural risk management in a volcanic environment, can greatly benefit from innovative techniques. In particular, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are well known by Native Digital and can be used by lower-level and university students to promote their understanding of natural risks. 3DTeLC is a three-year trans-European project funded by the Erasmus+ Key Action 2 programme: “Cooperation for Innovation and Exchange of Good Practices, a European scheme that fosters higher education partnerships” (https://www.erasmusplus.org.uk/key-action-2). The main goal of this project is to help young students to become highly-skilled professionals in the field of environment and geosciences, gaining knowledge in image and 3D-spatial analysis, data management and informatics, and strengthening their mathematical and numerical skills in Earth observation and data analysis. In the framework of this project INGV team has developed a “Talking poster”, using a custom AR tool to propose a user friendly approach aimed at the reduction of volcanic and seismic risks.

    Description: Realizzata dall’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia per l’edizione del Festival della Scienza di Genova 2019, è stata in seguito resa itinerante con un ricco programma di allestimenti in numerose città d’Italia. Consiste in un percorso interattivo per scoprire come i diversi elementi che compongono un edificio reagiscono alle scosse di terremoto e qual è il ruolo del terreno che si trova sotto le nostre case. Gli elementi strutturali di un edificio sono le parti portanti che, se danneggiate, possono provocarne il crollo; quelli non-strutturali sono gli impianti, le parti architettoniche - come muri divisori, pannelli, balconi - e gli arredi. Anche gli arredi, infatti, se non posizionati e fissati correttamente, possono causare feriti, ostruire le vie di fuga e procurare danni economici. Questa mostra svela dettagli poco noti al pubblico e semplici gesti che possono fare la diferenza in caso di terremoto.

    Description: Piovono idee! (Cloudy with a Chance of ideas!) is the participative scientific dissemination initiative of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia on environmental education designed specifically for the last two primary school classes (ISCDE 1) and the first middle school class (ISCDE 2), so it was chosen by the “Don Milani” (ex ISA1) comprehensive institute of La Spezia as continuity project between the two different school orders for the school year 2017/2018. The aim was to promote scientific culture in Primary and Middle Schools emphasizing the importance of Science in everyday life in order to favor sustainable development of Society. To knowledge the mechanisms that regulate the environment is increasingly important and the educational dialogue between School and Research endorses reflection starting from the sharing of personal experiences on the flood phenomena that often affect the area of la Spezia with a participatory experimental approach. Piovono idee! is an interactive learning experience on hydrogeological risk and climate change. The active path is rich of experiments, educational-scientific laboratories and interactive exhibits to better understand the geological phenomena through manipulation. The team role-playing games reinforce and stimulate emotional intelligence instilling correct behaviour and best practices. Visitors spontaneously ask questions in the area of experience, and find answers in the area of knowledge, learn the key concepts through learning by doing activities and conclude with role playing to reflect on the sustainability of their daily behavior (area of action). The exploration of Geosciences becomes a mean of raising pupils’ awareness of environmental problems by understanding natural phenomena. They learn that, through active and responsible citizenship actions, coexistence with natural hazards is possible. We can all do something to prevent catastrophes if we respect Nature and our territory.

With these words, Gaius Plinius Secundus, better known as Pliny the Elder, in his Naturalis Historia (XXXVI, §95), described the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the largest temples built by Greeks and one of the seven wonders in the ancient world. Recent historic studies allowed pointing out that the foundations were composed by a continuous stone plate separated from a thin layer of marshland by means of a layer of clay mixed with charcoal and ashes [Carpani, 2017]. Nowadays those layers are interpreted as a pioneering base isolation system.

    Description: This research was inspired by an old stereoscopic viewer from the early 1900s, containing 42 glass slides depicting scenes from two ancient and almost forgotten Italian earthquakes. We refer to the earthquakes that struck Southern Calabria and Eastern Sicily in the years 1894 and 1905, causing extensive destruction and hundreds of deaths, but whose memory was blurred by the subsequent, great earthquake of the Sicilian Strait of December 28,1908 which caused about 80,000 deaths.

    Description: L’idea di questo volume nasce dal prezioso confronto che, ormai da qualche anno, ha preso vita fra i giuristi dell’Ateneo Fiorentino e gli scienziati del Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra dello stesso Ateneo e dell’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. La consapevolezza della difficile penetrazione del sapere scientifico nel processo penale, come è dimostrato dalle delusioni delle decisioni giudiziarie su casi di grande rilevanza, anche mediatica, ci ha spinti a condensare queste riflessioni in un volume che si fregia del contributo di prestigiosi Autori i quali hanno voluto affiancarci in questo progetto. I curatori sono consapevoli che del tema si parla da lungo tempo, anche attraverso pubblicazioni scientifiche di notevole livello scientifico. Pur tuttavia, si è cercato di offrire al lettore un contributo originale, alimentando non soltanto la consapevolezza del complesso dibattito che si articola attorno ai rapporti fra Diritto e Scienza, ma offrendo altresì una serie di contributi tecnico-scientifici relativi alle discipline che oggi caratterizzano, in modo maggiormente pregnante, le vicende giudiziarie sulle responsabilità per i rischi della modernità. In questo senso si è certamente tratto spunto dal Reference Manual on Scientific Evidence, il quale, nella sua terza edizione, offre un ampio novero di guidelines volte a consentire agli attori del processo di comprendere quali requisiti debba soddisfare il contributo scientifico nelle materie di maggiore centralità ed attualità. Nel solco della preziosa esperienza maturata oltreoceano, ci auguriamo che tutti i saggi di questo volume possano a loro volta costituire quelle linee guida che servano a giudici, pubblici ministeri, avvocati, e perché no, agli stessi periti e consulenti tecnici, tanto per approfondire le problematiche di maggiore pregnanza in ordine alla necessità dell’ingresso di una buona scienza nel processo, quanto per discernere i corretti requisiti metodologici che lo scienziato deve seguire quando viene chiamato a rendere il proprio servizio a favore della verità processuale. Verità processuale e verità scientifica, nella loro necessaria complementarietà, si fondano su un metodo condiviso il quale non può mai prescindere dal rispetto di solide basi etiche poste a fondamento del patto sociale che permea la funzione processuale, incaricata di custodire i principi del Diritto penale sostanziale. Così, la sempre più pregnante esigenza che la decisione giudiziaria si conformi al sapere scientifico maggiormente accreditato ed attuale impone di conferire, oggi, una priorità ancora maggiore alla domanda su quale e quanta scienza possa e debba entrare nel processo penale. A questo interrogativo, che non deve mai abbandonare tanto il giurista quanto lo scienziato, i curatori auspicano che il lettore possa trovare risposta, almeno in parte, negli scritti di questo volume.

    Description: Viene presentata un’analisi dei commenti lasciati dai visitatori in occasione di una mostra temporanea organizzata dall’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. L’obiettivo è quello di ampliare le prospettive di studio sui visitatori, utilizzando le tracce della visita lasciate nel libro dei commenti. I dati sono stati elaborati sviluppando una metodologia ad hoc, basata sull’analisi del contenuto dei messaggi. I risultati consentono di analizzare alcune caratteristiche dei visitatori e di valutare l’esperienza di visita, potenziando le opportunità di studio sui visitatori e fornendo un ulteriore strumento di indagine. In particolare, un terzo dei visitatori, soprattutto bambini e donne, ha utilizzato il libro dei commenti testimoniando, nel 99% del totale delle valutazioni, esperienze positive. La discussione tratterà anche i vantaggi e gli svantaggi sull’utilizzo del libro dei commenti emersi da questa analisi.

    Description: Energy industry, oil and gas sector to be specific, has been in a leading position in the development of new technologies and innovative ideas for the efficient production of hydrocarbons and processing. Exploration of challenging, technologicaly difficult sub salt and sab basalt fields, drilling activities in deep waters and to reach deep reservoirs, development and deployment of efficient and modern production methods, reservoir management models and enhanced recovery mechanisms to improve oil recovery, and CO2 sequestration approach to inject CO2 in geological strata emerged as main areas where major petroleum operators and service companies are focusing significantly for their Research and Development activities. However commercialization of innovative technologies is very costly and time-intensive. The risk avert attitude of major oil and gas operator companies towards promotion of new technological development and innovative tools increased pressure on innovative service companies to stick to the existing technologies. This paper unfolds various issues regarding industry’s approach and attitude towards the development of new technologies and summarized benefits reaped by the companies from novel ideas.

    Description: Building resiliency to natural hazards like earthquakes requires worldwide engagement, starting from education and dissemination of good practice among the youths. Education of new professionals in the field of seismic risk takes nowadays advantage from the implementation of emergent technologies, such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), which can benefit from the huge amount of digital information available. We present a few case studies from two European projects promoting education and communication also throughout the application of AR and VR. Targeted audiences of the two projects were schools and universities. KnowRISK (Know your city, Reduce seISmic risK through non-structural elements; Grant agreement ECHO/SUB/2015/718655/PREV28) ended in 2018; it had a special focus on non-structural damage caused by earthquakes, exploring the causes of disruption and proposing preventive measures to reduce it. 3DTeLC is funded through the Erasmus+ Key Action 2 Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education scheme (Project Reference: 2017-1-UK01-KA203-036719) and will be completed in 2020. The project trains students to navigate 3D models of volcanic regions in Iceland, Greece, and Italy (at Mt. Etna volcano), allowing them to carry out virtual surveys also in hazardous contexts. Accordingly, the project aims at strengthening students’ skills in Earth observation and data analysis.

    Description: In many countries worldwide the living in a natural hazard prone land does not seem to be a prerequisite that drives to take actions on promoting knowledge and safety. This is a disappointing issue that poses important challenges to school education. School should be the major environment forming a more resilient future society and the place where to implant seeds capable to make the difference with the past, where we might have the chance to find solutions for a sustainability and security of future generation. Situated Learning Episodes (EAS) have the potential for actively engage today’s students and therefore can be succesfully used to promote knowledge on fundamental issues that affect future generations. As such EAS are based on active learning strategies and relate to the three learning domains referred to as knowledge, skills and attitudes. They are based on flipped-up approach to learning that starts from research on a certain subject, act on problem solving abilities, passes by a classroom discussion engaging students in solving problems in a learn-by-doing framework, and ends with a reflective learning approach, where concepts are reworked and restructured. Research is done through digital media that are more suitable to digital-natives students. In this chapter we present EASes focused on natural hazards (earthquakes, tsunamis and floods) that may strongly affect lives of many people around the world while being highly underestimated by formal education. Comics are used to trigger interest of students, engage them in finding the way to get around situations to develop life skills that might end up being fundamental for their own safety. We let the young implement their own strategy to communicate dos and don'ts on natural hazards and design three EASes: EAS1 - There's an earthquake! What to do?, EAS 2 - Earthquake and tsunami: what should I do if I am outdoor?, EAS 3 - Floods: what to do? School should take a role of social responsibility in the critical use of natural resources and promote accurate information on natural hazards and has a duty to convey the concept that earthquakes, tsunami, landslides, floods, are natural phenomena become disasters more often for a reckless land management [Piangiamore et al. 2013]. And all this can become an interesting research and discovery for students through an EAS.
