    Description: Establishing sustainable and responsible speleotourism development is a major challenge and involves complex activities. Adequate theoretical starting point is the application of geoethical values related to the conservation and protection of the caves to be used for touristic purposes. Positive and negative cases of human behaviors towards speleological geoheritage are discussed, in order to highlight what should be done in cave management to avoid malpractices and on what elements could be founded adequate strategies aimed at promoting sustainable speleotourism. This is important to tourism management organizations involved in the promotion of caves and in creating economic opportunities for local populations, while respecting cave ecosystems. Modern cave management must be focused on the protection of the cave ecosystems, finding ways to achieve at the same time an economic development of local communities. But this approach needs the adoption of a geoethical framework of values to be shared by all stakeholders involved so that successful cooperation can be achieved despite differences in interests and expectations. The aim of this paper is to raise the awareness about the need to apply the values of geoethics to speleotourism, stimulating new fields of discussion within the scientific and technical communities involved in studies and activities related to geotourism and geoheritage. The possibilities of developing new ways to manage caves, in order to promote a sustainable socio-economic development of local communities, have to be balanced with the protection of natural environments as much as possible. The proposed theoretical frameworks have the goal to increase the discussion on the best ways of connecting speleotourism to sustainable and responsible cave management, presenting two case studies, and pointing out potential solutions.

    Description: This study presents and discusses horizontal and vertical geodetic velocities for a low strain rate region of the south Alpine thrust front in northeastern Italy obtained by integrating GPS, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and leveling data. The area is characterized by the presence of subparallel, south-verging thrusts whose seismogenic potential is still poorly known. Horizontal GPS velocities show that this sector of the eastern Southern Alps is undergoing ∼1 mm a−1 of NW–SE shortening associated with the Adria–Eurasia plate convergence, but the horizontal GPS velocity gradient across the mountain front provides limited constraints on the geometry and slip rate of the several subparallel thrusts. In terms of vertical velocities, the three geodetic methods provide consistent results showing a positive velocity gradient, of ∼ 1.5 mm a−1, across the mountain front, which can hardly be explained solely by isostatic processes. We developed an interseismic dislocation model whose geometry is constrained by available subsurface geological reconstructions and instrumental seismicity. While a fraction of the measured uplift can be attributed to glacial and erosional isostatic processes, our results suggest that interseismic strain accumulation at the Montello and the Bassano–Valdobbiadene thrusts it significantly contributing to the measured uplift. The seismogenic potential of the Montello thrust turns out to be smaller than that of the Bassano–Valdobbiadene fault, whose estimated parameters (locking depth equals 9.1 km and slip rate equals 2.1 mm a−1) indicate a structure capable of potentially generating a Mw〉6.5 earthquake. These results demonstrate the importance of precise vertical ground velocity data for modeling interseismic strain accumulation in slowly deforming regions where seismological and geomorphological evidence of active tectonics is often scarce or not conclusive.

    Description: During 20172018 academic year, a SchoolWork Pathway (SWP) project has been developed and accomplished with the collaboration of students attending the last year of the scientific high school of Cerveteri (Rome). The main focus of the project was to introduce students to an environmental problem that is not well known but it is locally present. The project has been addressed to the study of natural radioactivity due to the presence of tuff outcrops (Tufo rosso a scorie nere and Tufi stratificati varicolori di Sacrofano, deriving from middlelower Pleistocene volcanic activity) that naturally produce the radioactive gas radon. Thus, the Cerveteri area has a natural radioactivity but radon is a gas that can migrate and easily escape in the atmosphere. However, tuffs can be used as building material and, in this case, radon can accumulate in houses and closed spaces (basements and cellars). The SWP project has been developed by means of lectures, experimental measurements and data elaboration of gas radon activity in soil, indoor (in the students’ houses) and dissolved in water. Results have highlighted moderate (〉16000 Bq/m3) but localized anomalies of soil gas radon and mediumlow (〈 200 Bq/m3) values of indoor radon excepting some cases exceeding the threshold (〉 300 Bq/m3) recommended by 2013/59 Euratom Directive.

    Description: All’interno dei percorsi forma vi di Alternanza Scuola­Lavoro un gruppo di ricercatori dell’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia ha proposto e sviluppato con una terza classe del Liceo Scientifico Cavour di Roma un progetto riguardante l’avvicinamento degli studenti al mondo della ricerca scientifica, allo scopo di affrontarla e svilupparla in tu e le sue fasi. Dopo aver spiegato e condiviso l’obiettivo della ricerca con gli alunni, la prima fase del progetto ha riguardato la raccolta dei da tramite l’utilizzo di strumenti di misura; si è in seguito proceduto all’analisi dei dati ottenuti , attraverso un foglio elettronico di calcolo, la produzione di grafici e mappe tema che e infine la scrittura di un articolo scientifico (parte essenziale del lavoro del ricercatore) con la descrizione della ricerca svolta e dei risultati ottenuti . La ricerca ha riguardato la distribuzione del radon indoor in alcuni rioni di Roma. Gli studenti hanno avuto la possibilità di misurare il radon indoor tramite strumenti specifici nelle loro abitazioni e nella loro scuola, di analizzarne la distribuzione spaziale e temporale e di individuare dei casi particolarmente anomali. Sono stati quindi evidenziati i legami tra i valori misura , la geologia del sottosuolo e le tipologie abitative, illustrate per mezzo di mappe tematiche, facendo confluire il tutto o nella scrittura di un articolo scientifico. Il presente rapporto tecnico è stato introdotto dai ricercatori e sviluppato dagli studenti .

    Description: In a transient warming scenario, the North Atlantic is influenced by a complex pattern of surface buoyancy flux changes that ultimately weaken the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Here we study the AMOC response in the CMIP5 experiment, using the near-geostrophic balance of the AMOC on interannual time scales to identify the role of temperature and salinity changes in altering the circulation. The thermal wind relationship is used to quantify changes in the zonal density gradients that control the strength of the flow. At 40°N, where the overturning cell is at its strongest, weakening of the AMOC is largely driven by warming between 1000- and 2000-m depth along the western margin. Despite significant subpolar surface freshening, salinity changes are small in the deep branch of the circulation. This is likely due to the influence of anomalously salty water in the subpolar intermediate layers, which is carried northward from the subtropics in the upper limb of the AMOC. In the upper 1000 m at 40°N, salty anomalies due to increased evaporation largely cancel the buoyancy increase due to warming. Therefore, in CMIP5, temperature dynamics are responsible for AMOC weakening, while freshwater forcing instead acts to strengthen the circulation in the net. These results indicate that past modeling studies of AMOC weakening, which rely on freshwater hosing in the subpolar gyre, may not be directly applicable to a more complex warming scenario.
