    Estimating Bioturbation From Replicated Small‐Sample Radiocarbon Ages (2021)

    Description: Marine sedimentary records are a key archive when reconstructing past climate; however, mixing at the seabed (bioturbation) can strongly influence climate records, especially when sedimentation rates are low. By commingling the climate signal from different time periods, bioturbation both smooths climate records, by damping fast climate variations, and creates noise when measurements are made on samples containing small numbers of individual proxy carriers, such as foraminifera. Bioturbation also influences radiocarbon-based age-depth models, as sample ages may not represent the true ages of the sediment layers from which they were picked. While these effects were first described several decades ago, the advent of ultra-small-sample $^{14}$C dating now allows samples containing very small numbers of foraminifera to be measured, thus enabling us to directly measure the age-heterogeneity of sediment for the first time. Here, we use radiocarbon dates measured on replicated samples of 3-30 foraminifera to estimate age-heterogeneity for five marine sediment cores with sedimentation rates ranging from 2-30 cm kyr$^{-1}$. From their age-heterogeneities and sedimentation rates we infer mixing depths of 10-20 cm for our core sites. Our results show that when accounting for age-heterogeneity, the true error of radiocarbon dating can be several times larger than the reported measurement. We present estimates of this uncertainty as a function of sedimentation rate and the number of individuals per radiocarbon date. A better understanding of this uncertainty will help us to optimise radiocarbon measurements, construct age models with appropriate uncertainties and better interpret marine paleo records.

    Description: 〈P〉In the history of Czech linguistic theory and thought there is hardly a book more controversial than the grammar of Václav J. Rosa (1620-1689), Čechořečnost seu Grammatica Linguae Bohemicae. It appeared in 1672, two years after Comenius's death, at the beginning of the dark age (temno) which came to symbolize for the revivalist tradition, haunted as it was by the past, the decadence of Czech literature, culture and national spirit. Given this, Rosa's grammar (henceforth RG) was inevitably destined to acquire the stigma of the same degenerate qualities which corrupted the nation's very soul, ist language.     Learning Ontology Relations by Combining Corpus-Based Techniques and Reasoning on Data from Semantic Web Sources (2021)

    Description: The manual construction of formal domain conceptualizations (ontologies) is labor-intensive. Ontology learning, by contrast, provides (semi-)automatic ontology generation from input data such as domain text. This thesis proposes a novel approach for learning labels of non-taxonomic ontology relations. It combines corpus-based techniques with reasoning on Semantic Web data. Corpus-based methods apply vector space similarity of verbs co-occurring with labeled and unlabeled relations to calculate relation label suggestions from a set of candidates. A meta ontology in combination with Semantic Web sources such as DBpedia and OpenCyc allows reasoning to improve the suggested labels. An extensive formal evaluation demonstrates the superior accuracy of the presented hybrid approach.

    Description: This volume reports on the main results of the research project Inclusive epistemologies and practices of out-of-school English learning. The study reacts to low attainment levels in English as a foreign language among socioeconomically disadvantaged youth. They evaluate the impact of the nonformal English language educational initiatives implemented and support their sustainability and transferability.     Description: Ludwig Wittgensteins «Bemerkungen über die Farben» gelten als äußerst schwieriger Text. Das vorliegende Buch führt Schritt für Schritt an die Themen und Problemstellungen der Farbbemerkungen Wittgensteins heran und liefert umfangreiche Erläuterungen zu den wichtigsten Textpassagen. Dies ist bemerkenswert, weil das bruchstückhafte Textmaterial aus den beiden letzten Lebensjahren Wittgensteins eine klare Struktur vermissen lässt, die darin aufgeworfenen Fragen häufig befremdlich anmuten und größtenteils ohne Antwort bleiben. So ist es wenig verwunderlich, dass bis jetzt keine umfassende philosophische Studie zu den «Bemerkungen über die Farben» zur Verfügung steht. Das Buch von Frederik A. Gierlinger füllt erstmalig diese Lücke in der Rezeptionsgeschichte.

    Description: 〈P〉Der vorliegende Sammelband ist dem 400-Jahr-Jubiläum des Erscheinens zweier hervorragender Werke in der Kulturgeschichte der Slowenen, der Bibelübersetzung von Juraj Dalmatin und der ersten slowenischen Grammatik (Articae horulae) von Adam Bohorič (beides 1584) gewidmet und enthält den Großteil der für den Druck bearbeiteten Referate der "3. Slawistentagung der Universitäten Klagenfurt und Ljubljana" (Klagenfurt, 26.-28. Mai 1983). Den Hauptteil des Bandes bilden die Beiträge zum Rahmenthema der Tagung "Protestantismus bei den Slowenen". Darüber hinaus wurden auch jene Tagungsbeiträge aufgenommen, die zwar thematisch außerhalb des Rahmenthemas liegen, jedoch einen Einblick in die slowenistische Forschungstätigkeit an den beiden Universitätsorten geben. 〈/P〉
