Description: For all you readers who want the inside dope on how to be an architect, you've come to the right place. Here's a real-life story of the evolution of an E2E architect who has shared her lessons learned with us. There's clear insight here. She describes her realization that it's not just about knowledge of the domain or technical skill, but also about communication and learning. The Web extra at http://youtu.be/_RujP0FIjhY is an audio podcast in which Bett Correa and Russ Miller discuss contextual design (CD), a user-centered design process created by Hugh Beyer and Karen Holtzblatt. CD helps software architects and developers better connect with the needs of their users and enables them to more easily "re-imagine" the solution they create for users.

Description: Free, open source software development communities can become large and complex. They can also be a focus of interest for competing companies relying on their outcomes, with employees joining the development and maintenance effort. In those cases, it's especially important for both companies and communities to understand how this collaboration is working and how it matches their policies and expectations. This articles looks at two cases (OpenStack and WebKit) that the authors studied using analytics techniques. They conclude that such analytics can improve factual knowledge about how development communities are performing in aspects that are of interest to companies.

Description: Finding yourself in a situation with a working and a buggy system is quite common. Differential debugging methodically can help by comparing a known good system with a buggy one, working toward the problem source. Some simple steps include applying differential debugging by looking at log files and increasing a system's log verbosity when needed. If the system doesn't offer a sufficiently detailed logging mechanism, you can tease out its runtime behavior with tools that trace calls to the operating system or that trace network packets. You can also compare carefully the two environments where the systems operate. The Web extra at http://youtu.be/qnXS6b4hakg is an audio podcast of author Diomidis Spinellis reading his Tools of the Trade column, in which he discusses how comparing a good system with a buggy one can help locate the source of the problem.

Description: Agile processes seek "just enough" requirements. However, this focus on simple software solutions can come at the expense of solutions that meet more creative requirements. To explore alternatives, this article reports results from extending one agile process with creativity techniques in a project for a large media organization. Domain experts ranked the requirements generated with the process as more novel than baseline epics from the product backlog of the same project, while the requirements' usefulness increased overall after incubation over the duration of a sprint.

Description: Component-based development is a relatively new paradigm for software development, compared to more established approaches such as object-oriented analysis and design. The authors conducted a study to examine the ease-of-reuse perceptions of analysts in modeling business systems using a library of components versus a library of objects. A survey of the IT professionals who participated in the study showed that perceived components to be much easier to reuse than objects. Users also expressed significantly higher satisfaction with components and, by a large majority, a preference for reusing components to reusing objects.

Description: The winners of the 2012 IEEE Visualization Contest combined methods from molecular, flow, and scalar data visualization to reveal the characteristics and processes in the contest data. Because the simulated material didn't behave according to theory from textbooks, one challenge was to find meaningful visualizations to facilitate exploratory analysis. The contest winners created an interactive visual-analysis application based on MegaMol, their visualization framework. The tailored visualizations revealed data characteristics such as thermal vibrations and the spatial distribution of polarization domains. Domain expert knowledge verified the results. This video at http://youtu.be/RXnNKekY7VE shows the dataset used and the development of vector clusters over time.

Description: The next generation of VR simulators could take into account a novel input: the user's mental state, as measured with electrodes and a brain-computer interface. One illustration of this promising path is a project that adapted a guidance system's force feedback to the user's mental workload in real time. A first application of this approach is a medical training simulator that provides virtual assistance that adapts to the trainee's mental activity. Such results pave the way to VR systems that will automatically reconfigure and adapt to their users' mental states and cognitive processes.

Description: In conventional vehicle teleoperation systems, using low-bandwidth, high-delay transmission links causes a serious problem for remote control of the vehicles. To solve this problem, a proposed teleoperation system employs 3D maps and GPS time synchronization. Two GPS receivers measure the transmission delay, which the system uses to estimate the vehicle's location and orientation. Field experiments show that the 3D-map-based interface lets users easily comprehend the remote environment while navigating a vehicle. The experiments also show that taking communication delays into account improves maneuverability.

Description: Should broadband be treated as a public utility or be left solely to the private sector? Should state or municipal governments provide basic services, act as anchor tenants, or simply monitor progress? Whichever side of the debate you stand on, there is a growing consensus on the importance of high-quality broadband connections for everyone to ensure sustainable social and economic growth. Policy makers, legal scholars, and CEOs have shared their perspective. It's time for computer scientists to join the conversation.

Description: The Internet's growth, and the proliferation of online collaboration tools and platforms and the federated systems that support them, have enabled ad hoc processes in which people interact in a dynamic collective way. Such activities are characterized by their flexibility and data-driven nature, which makes them more difficult to analyze and support than traditionally rigid processes. Systems that handle dynamic collective work activities must address three main challenges: finding patterns in ad hoc execution behavior, handling concurrent users and concurrently executing tasks, and providing operational support. This special issue provides a snapshot of ongoing work in this area that addresses these challenges.

Description: MailOfMine aims at automatically building a set of workflow models--which represent the artful processes behind knowledge workers' activities--on top of a collection of email messages. Such models formalize the unspecified agile processes that knowledge workers autonomously perform: because these models aren't defined a priori by experts but are rather inferred from real-life scenarios, they're guaranteed to respect true workflow executions. Moreover, knowledge workers can share, compare, and preserve such models to put in evidence their best practices and thus benefit the entire business. Finally, workers and organizations can analyze such processes to determine bottlenecks and delays in actual executions. MailOfMine describes workflow models according to a declarative approach, with a specific visual notation.

Description: Organizations require tools that can assess their online reputations as well as the impact of their marketing and public outreach activities. The Media Watch on Climate Change is a Web intelligence and online collaboration platform that addresses this requirement. It aggregates large archives of digital content from multiple stakeholder groups and enables the co-creation and visualization of evolving knowledge archives. Here, the authors introduce the base platform and a context-aware document editor as an add-on that supports concurrent authoring by multiple users. While documents are being edited, semantic methods analyze them on the fly to recommend related content. The system computes positive or negative sentiment automatically to provide a better understanding of third-party perceptions. The editor is part of an interactive dashboard that uses trend charts and map projections to show how often and where relevant information is published, and to provide a real-time account of concepts that stakeholders associate with a topic.

Description: As large energy consumers, base stations need energy-efficient wireless access networks. This article compares the design of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks to energy-efficient LTE-Advanced networks. LTE-Advanced introduces three new functionalities--carrier aggregation, heterogeneous networks, and extended multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) support. The authors develop a power consumption model for LTE and LTE-Advanced macrocell and femtocell base stations, along with an energy efficiency measure. They show that LTE-Advanced's carrier aggregation and MIMO improve networks' energy efficiency up to 400 and 450 percent, respectively.

Description: In a previous article, the authors demonstrated that effectively discovering Web services helps developers avoid several common design errors in Web Service Description Language (WSDL) documents. Their proposed guidelines are unfortunately applicable only when publishers follow the top-down, or contract-first, method of building services, which isn't very popular due to its inherent costs. Here, they present an approach for preventing such errors when using a counterpart method--namely, bottom-up or code-first--and measure the approach's impact on service discovery. The rationale behind the study is that because code-first service interfaces are automatically generated by tools that--given a service implementation--deterministically map programming language constructs onto WSDL elements, the measurable properties of service implementations could influence resulting service interfaces.

Description: In this article, the authors propose a new approach to distributed computing with Web browsers and introduce the WeevilScout prototype framework. The proliferation of Web browsers and the performance gains being achieved by current JavaScript virtual machines raises the question whether Internet browsers can become yet another middleware for distributed computing. With 2 billion users online, computing through Internet browsers has the potential to amass immense resources, thus transforming the Internet into a distributed computer ideal for common classes of distributed scientific applications such as parametric studies. As a proof of concept, the authors demonstrate how a cluster of globally distributed Internet browsers is used to compute thousands of bio-informatics tasks.

Description: Very large datasets, also known as big data, originate from many domains, including healthcare, energy, weather, business, and social networks. Deriving knowledge is more difficult than ever when we must do it by intricately processing big data. Organizations rely on third-party, commodity computing resources or clouds to gather the computational resources required to manipulate data of this magnitude. Although social networks are perhaps among the largest big data producers, the collaboration that results from leveraging this paradigm could help to solve big data processing challenges. Here, the authors explore using personal ad hoc clouds comprised of individuals in social networks to address such challenges.

Description: Cloud computing services are traditionally deployed on centralized computing infrastructures confined to a few data centers, while cloud applications run in a single data center. However, the cloud's centralized nature can be limiting in terms of performance and cost for applications where users, data, and computation are distributed. The authors present an overview of distributed clouds that might be better suited for such applications. They briefly describe the distributed cloud landscape and introduce Nebula, a highly decentralized cloud that uses volunteer edge resources. The authors provide insights into some of its key properties and design issues, and describe a distributed MapReduce application scenario to illustrate the benefits and trade-offs of using distributed and decentralized clouds for distributed data-intensive computing applications.

Description: After 40 years of relational databases and of cohabitation between flat tables and object-oriented programming, a new generation of data stores is emerging. Sometimes referred to as NoSQL, this new generation supports hierarchical, heterogeneous data such as XML, JavaScript Object Notation, and Binary JSON. While the abstract querying primitives of the relational algebra (join, selection, projection, and so on) also make a lot of sense in the NoSQL world, a need exists for a tailor-made language for querying hierarchical, heterogeneous datasets. This article briefly summarizes the history of databases, then describes the JSONiq language. JSONiq was designed from the ground up to support JSON data and run against all JSON- or BSON-based data stores, turning them into full-fledged databases.

Description: Until recently, a major drawback of declarative-3D approaches for the Web was the encoding of scene-graph-related structured data along with a text-based description of unstructured vertex data. Loading times were long, and 3D Web content wasn't available until the full page had completely loaded. To overcome this limitation requires external mesh data containers that are referenced in the scene description. In particular, sequential image geometry containers and explicit binary containers align well with GPU buffer structures, thus enabling fast decoding and GPU uploads. Furthermore, progressive binary geometry enables simple, yet highly progressive transmission of arbitrary mesh data on the Web.

Description: Image retargeting adjusts images to arbitrary sizes such that they can be viewed on different displays. Content-aware image retargeting has been receiving increased attention. In particular, researchers have improved a patch-wise scaling method for image retargeting at the object level. The scaling partitions the image into rectangular patches of adaptive sizes, which are comparable to the sizes of the salient objects in the image. This partitioning is based on a visual-saliency map; accordingly, the method labels the patches as important or unimportant. Then, the method scales the important patches as uniformly as possible and stretches or squeezes the unimportant patches to fit the target size. A patch-based image-similarity measure finds the optimal set of scaling factors. In experiments, the improved method performed well for three image types: lines and edges, foreground objects, and geometric structures.

Description: Online learning has become increasingly popular on handling massive data. The sequential nature of online learning, however, requires a centralized learner to store data and update parameters. In this paper, we consider online learning with distributed data sources. The autonomous learners update local parameters based on local data sources and periodically exchange information with a small subset of neighbors in a communication network. We derive the regret bound for strongly convex functions that generalizes the work by Ram et al. for convex functions. More importantly, we show that our algorithm has intrinsic privacy-preserving properties, and we prove the sufficient and necessary conditions for privacy preservation in the network. These conditions imply that for networks with greater-than-one connectivity, a malicious learner cannot reconstruct the subgradients (and sensitive raw data) of other learners, which makes our algorithm appealing in privacy-sensitive applications.

Description: Enriching many location-based applications, various new skyline queries are proposed and formulated based on the notion of locational dominance, which extends conventional one by taking objects' nearness to query positions into account additional to objects' nonspatial attributes. To answer a representative class of skyline queries for location-based applications efficiently, this paper presents two index-based approaches, namely, augmented R-tree and dominance diagram. Augmented R-tree extends R-tree by including aggregated nonspatial attributes in index nodes to enable dominance checks during index traversal. Dominance diagram is a solution-based approach, by which each object is associated with a precomputed nondominance scope wherein query points should have the corresponding object not locationally dominated by any other. Dominance diagram enables skyline queries to be evaluated via parallel and independent comparisons between nondominance scopes and query points, providing very high search efficiency. The performance of these two approaches is evaluated via empirical studies, in comparison with other possible approaches.

Description: Skyline is an important operation in many applications to return a set of interesting points from a potentially huge data space. Given a table, the operation finds all tuples that are not dominated by any other tuples. It is found that the existing algorithms cannot process skyline on big data efficiently. This paper presents a novel skyline algorithm SSPL on big data. SSPL utilizes sorted positional index lists which require low space overhead to reduce I/O cost significantly. The sorted positional index list $(L_j)$ is constructed for each attribute $(A_j)$ and is arranged in ascending order of $(A_j)$. SSPL consists of two phases. In phase 1, SSPL computes scan depth of the involved sorted positional index lists. During retrieving the lists in a round-robin fashion, SSPL performs pruning on any candidate positional index to discard the candidate whose corresponding tuple is not skyline result. Phase 1 ends when there is a candidate positional index seen in all of the involved lists. In phase 2, SSPL exploits the obtained candidate positional indexes to get skyline results by a selective and sequential scan on the table. The experimental results on synthetic and real data sets show that SSPL has a significant advantage over the existing skyline algorithms.

Description: Classification algorithms used to support the decisions of human analysts are often used in settings in which zero-one loss is not the appropriate indication of performance. The zero-one loss corresponds to the operating point with equal costs for false alarms and missed detections, and no option for the classifier to leave uncertain test samples unlabeled. A generalization bound for ensemble classification at the standard operating point has been developed based on two interpretable properties of the ensemble: strength and correlation, using the Chebyshev inequality. Such generalization bounds for other operating points have not been developed previously and are developed in this paper. Significantly, the bounds are empirically shown to have much practical utility in determining optimal parameters for classification with a reject option, classification for ultralow probability of false alarm, and classification for ultralow probability of missed detection. Counter to the usual guideline of large strength and small correlation in the ensemble, different guidelines are recommended by the derived bounds in the ultralow false alarm and missed detection probability regimes.

Description: There have been numerous recent applications of graph databases (e.g., the Semantic Web, ontology representation, social networks, XML, chemical databases, and biological databases). A fundamental structural index for data graphs, namely minimum bisimulation, has been reported useful for efficient path query processing and optimization including selectivity estimation, among many others. Data graphs are subject to change and their indexes are updated accordingly. This paper studies the incremental maintenance problem of the minimum bisimulation of a possibly cyclic data graph. While cyclic graphs are ubiquitous among the data on the web, previous work on the maintenance problem has mostly focused on acyclic graphs. To study the problem with cyclic graphs, we first show that the two existing classes of minimization algorithms—merging algorithm and partition refinement—have their strengths and weaknesses. Second, we propose a novel hybrid algorithm and its analytical model. This algorithm supports an edge insertion or deletion and two forms of batch insertions or deletions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first maintenance algorithm that guarantees minimum bisimulation of cyclic graphs. Third, we propose to partially reuse the minimum bisimulation before an update in order to optimize maintenance performance. We present an experimental study on both synthetic and real-data graphs that verified the efficiency and effectiveness of our algorithms.

Description: We address the problem of localizing actions, such as opening a door, in hours of challenging video data. We propose a model based on a sequence of atomic action units, termed "actoms," that are semantically meaningful and characteristic for the action. Our actom sequence model (ASM) represents an action as a sequence of histograms of actom-anchored visual features, which can be seen as a temporally structured extension of the bag-of-features. Training requires the annotation of actoms for action examples. At test time, actoms are localized automatically based on a nonparametric model of the distribution of actoms, which also acts as a prior on an action's temporal structure. We present experimental results on two recent benchmarks for action localization "Coffee and Cigarettes" and the "DLSBP" dataset. We also adapt our approach to a classification-by-localization set-up and demonstrate its applicability on the challenging "Hollywood 2" dataset. We show that our ASM method outperforms the current state of the art in temporal action localization, as well as baselines that localize actions with a sliding window method.

Description: File replication is widely used in structured P2P systems to avoid hot spots in servers and enhance file availability. The number of replicas and replication distance affect the file replication cost. These two elements and the replica update frequency determined in the file replication stage also affect the cost of subsequent consistency maintenance. However, most existing file replication protocols focus on improving file lookup efficiency without considering its cost and its subsequent influence on consistency maintenance. This paper studies the problem about how a server chooses files to replicate and where to replicate files to achieve low cost in both file replication and consistency maintenance stages without compromising the effectiveness of file replication. This paper presents a lightweight and Cooperative multifactOr considered file Replication Protocol (CORP) to achieve this goal. CORP simultaneously takes into account multiple factors including file popularity, update rate, node available capacity, file load, and node locality, aiming to minimize the number of replicas, update frequency, and replication distance. CORP also dynamically adjusts the number of replicas based on ever-changing file popularity and visit pattern. Extensive experimental results from simulation and PlanetLab real-world testbed demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of CORP in comparison with other file replication protocols. It dramatically reduces the overhead of both file replication and consistency maintenance. In addition, it exhibits high adaptiveness to skewed lookups and yields significant improvement in reducing overloaded nodes. Specifically, compared to the other replication protocols, CORP can reduce more than 71 percent of file replicas, 84 percent of overloaded nodes, 94 percent of consistency maintenance cost, and 72 percent of file replication and consistency maintenance latency.

Description: Power consumption has become a limiting factor in designing next generation network routers. Recent observation shows that IP lookup engines dominate the power consumption of core routers. Previous work on reducing power consumption of routers mainly focused on network- and system-level optimizations. This paper represents the first thorough study on the data structure optimization for lowering the power consumption in static random access memory (SRAM)-based IP lookup engines. Three different SRAM-based IP lookup architectures are discussed: nonpipelined, simple pipelined, and memory-balanced pipelined architectures. For each architecture, we formulate the problem of power minimization by revisiting the time-space tradeoff in multibit tries. Two distinct multibit trie algorithms are investigated: the expanded trie and the tree bitmap trie, which are widely used in SRAM-based IP lookup solutions. A theoretical framework is proposed to determine the optimal strides for building a multibit trie so that the worst-case power consumption of the IP lookup architecture is minimized. Experiments using real-life routing tables including both IPv4 and IPv6 data sets demonstrate that careful selection of strides in building the multibit tries can reduce the power consumption dramatically. We believe our methodology can be applied to other variants of multibit tries and can help in designing more power-efficient SRAM-based IP lookup architectures.

Description: As new transport protocols are being proposed and standardized, the choice of the best communication service to be used by applications for delivering their data when distributed is becoming too complex. Application developers need much knowledge on "how the protocol worksâ to decide whether or not it can be used to fulfill their requirements. Moreover, the performance of the service provided by a given communication protocol is highly dependent on the network context. The Autonomic Transport Protocol presented in this paper is aware of the application requirements and uses learning techniques to adapt the service it provides to best satisfy these requirements as the network conditions vary.

Description: Hardware Trojan attack in the form of malicious modification of a design has emerged as a major security threat. Side-channel analysis has been investigated as an alternative to conventional logic testing to detect the presence of hardware Trojans. However, these techniques suffer from decreased sensitivity toward small Trojans, especially because of the large process variations present in modern nanometer technologies. In this paper, we propose a novel noninvasive, multiple-parameter side-channel analysis-based Trojan detection approach. We use the intrinsic relationship between dynamic current and maximum operating frequency of a circuit to isolate the effect of a Trojan circuit from process noise. We propose a vector generation approach and several design/test techniques to improve the detection sensitivity. Simulation results with two large circuits, a 32-bit integer execution unit (IEU) and a 128-bit advanced encryption standard (AES) cipher, show a detection resolution of 1.12 percent amidst $(pm 20)$ percent parameter variations. The approach is also validated with experimental results. Finally, the use of a combined side-channel analysis and logic testing approach is shown to provide high overall detection coverage for hardware Trojan circuits of varying types and sizes.

Description: Public-key encryption with keyword search (PEKS) is a versatile tool. It allows a third party knowing the search trapdoor of a keyword to search encrypted documents containing that keyword without decrypting the documents or knowing the keyword. However, it is shown that the keyword will be compromised by a malicious third party under a keyword guess attack (KGA) if the keyword space is in a polynomial size. We address this problem with a keyword privacy enhanced variant of PEKS referred to as public-key encryption with fuzzy keyword search (PEFKS). In PEFKS, each keyword corresponds to an exact keyword search trapdoor and a fuzzy keyword search trapdoor. Two or more keywords share the same fuzzy keyword trapdoor. To search encrypted documents containing a specific keyword, only the fuzzy keyword search trapdoor is provided to the third party, i.e., the searcher. Thus, in PEFKS, a malicious searcher can no longer learn the exact keyword to be searched even if the keyword space is small. We propose a universal transformation which converts any anonymous identity-based encryption (IBE) scheme into a secure PEFKS scheme. Following the generic construction, we instantiate the first PEFKS scheme proven to be secure under KGA in the case that the keyword space is in a polynomial size.

Description: This paper presents techniques for low-power addition/subtraction in the logarithmic number system (LNS) and quantifies their impact on digital filter VLSI implementation. The impact of partitioning the look-up tables required for LNS addition/subtraction on complexity, performance, and power dissipation of the corresponding circuits is quantified. Two design parameters are exploited to minimize complexity, namely the LNS base and the organization of the LNS word. A roundoff noise model is used to demonstrate the impact of base and word length on the signal-to-noise ratio of the output of finite impulse response (FIR) filters. In addition, techniques for the low-power implementation of an LNS multiply accumulate (MAC) units are investigated. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed techniques can be extended to cotransformation-based circuits that employ interpolators. The results are demonstrated by evaluating the power dissipation, complexity and performance of several FIR filter configurations comprising one, two or four MAC units. Simulations of placed and routed VLSI LNS-based digital filters using a 90-nm 1.0 V CMOS standard-cell library reveal that significant power dissipation savings are possible by using optimized LNS circuits at no performance penalty, when compared to linear fixed-point two's-complement equivalents.

Description: NAND flash-based storage device is becoming a viable storage solution for mobile and desktop systems. Because of the erase-before-write nature, flash-based storage devices require garbage collection that causes significant performance degradation, incurring a large number of page migrations and block erasures. To improve I/O performance, therefore, it is important to develop an efficient garbage collection algorithm. In this paper, we propose a novel garbage collection technique, called buffer-aware garbage collection (BAGC), for flash-based storage devices. The BAGC improves the efficiency of two main steps of garbage collection, a block merge step and a victim block selection step, by taking account of the contents of a buffer cache, which is typically used to enhance I/O performance. The buffer-aware block merge (BABM) scheme eliminates unnecessary page migrations by evicting dirty data from a buffer cache during a block merge step. The buffer-aware victim block selection (BAVBS) scheme, on the other hand, selects a victim block so that the benefit of the buffer-aware block merge is maximized. Our experimental results show that BAGC improves I/O performance by up to 43 percent over existing buffer-unaware schemes for various benchmarks.

Description: Workflow-based workloads usually consist of multiple instances of the same workflow, which are jobs with control or data dependencies to carry out a well-defined scientific computation task, with each instance acting on its own input data. To maximize the performance, a high degree of concurrency is always achieved by running multiple instances simultaneously. However, since the amount of storage is limited on most systems, deadlock due to oversubscribed storage requests is a potential problem. To address this problem, we integrate two novel concepts with the traditional problem of deadlock avoidance by proposing two algorithms that can maximize active (not just allocated) resource utilization and minimize makespan. Our approach is based on the well-known banker's algorithm, but our algorithms make the important distinction between active and inactive resources, which is not a part of previous approaches. The central idea is to leverage the data-flow information to dynamically approximate localized maximum claim (i.e., the resource requirements of the remaining jobs of the instance) to improve either interinstance or intrainstance concurrency and still avoid deadlock. Through simulation-based studies, we show how our proposed algorithms are better than the classic banker's algorithm and the more recent Lang's algorithm in terms of makespan and active storage resource utilization.

Description: Security of today's networks heavily rely on network intrusion detection systems (NIDSs). The ability to promptly update the supported rule sets and detect new emerging attacks makes field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) a very appealing technology. An important issue is how to scale FPGA-based NIDS implementations to ever faster network links. Whereas a trivial approach is to balance traffic over multiple, but functionally equivalent, hardware blocks, each implementing the whole rule set (several thousands rules), the obvious cons is the linear increase in the resource occupation. In this work, we promote a different, traffic-aware, modular approach in the design of FPGA-based NIDS. Instead of purely splitting traffic across equivalent modules, we classify and group homogeneous traffic, and dispatch it to differently capable hardware blocks, each supporting a (smaller) rule set tailored to the specific traffic category. We implement and validate our approach using the rule set of the well-known Snort NIDS, and we experimentally investigate the emerging trade-offs and advantages, showing resource savings up to 80 percent based on real-world traffic statistics gathered from an operator's backbone.

Description: Reliability evaluation of interconnection network is important to the design and maintenance of multiprocessor systems. Extra connectivity determination and faulty networks' structure analysis are two important aspects for the reliability evaluation of interconnection networks. An $(n)$-dimensional bijective connection network (in brief, BC network), denoted by $(X_n)$, is an $(n)$-regular graph with $(2^{n})$ vertices and $(n2^{n-1})$ edges. The hypercubes, M$(ddot{o})$bius cubes, crossed cubes, and twisted cubes are some examples of the BC networks. By exploring the boundary problem of the BC networks, we prove that when $(nge 4)$ and $(0le hle n-4)$ the $(h)$-extra connectivity of an $(n)$-dimensional BC network $(X_n)$ is $(kappa_{h}(X_n)=)$ $(n(h+1)-{1over 2} h(h+3))$. Furthermore, there exists a large connected component and the remaining small components have at most $(h)$ vertices in total if the total number of faulty vertices is strictly less its $(h)$-extra connectivity. As an application, the results on the $(h)$-extra connectivity and structure of faulty networks on hypercubes, M$(ddot{o})$bius cubes, crossed cubes, and twisted cubes are obtained.

Description: New applications based on cloud computing, such as data synchronization for large chain departmental stores and bank transaction records, require very high-speed data transport. Although a number of high-bandwidth networks have been built, existing transport protocols or their variants over such networks cannot fully exploit the network bandwidth. Our experiments show that the fixed-size application level buffer employed in the receiver side is a major cause of this deficiency. A buffer that is either too small or too large impairs the transfer performance. Due to the varied natures of network conditions and of real-time packet processing (i.e., consuming) speed at the receiver, it is important to ensure that the buffer size is dynamically adjusted according to the perceived execution situation during runtime. In this paper, we propose Rada, a dynamic receiving buffer adaptation scheme for high-speed data transfer. Rada employs an exponential moving average aided scheme to quantify the data arrival rate and consumption rate in the buffer. Based on these two rates, we develop a linear aggressive increase conservative decrease scheme to adjust the buffer size dynamically. Moreover, a weighted mean function is employed to make the adjustment adaptive to the available memory in the receiver. Theoretical analysis is provided to demonstrate the rationale and parameter bounds of Rada. The performance of Rada is also theoretically compared with potential alternatives. We implement Rada in a Linux platform and extensively evaluate its performance in a variety of scenarios. Experimental results conform to the theoretical results, and show that Rada outperforms the static buffer scheme in terms of throughput, memory footprint, and fairness.

Description: This paper introduces SymPLFIED, a program-level framework that allows specification of arbitrary error detectors and the verification of their efficacy against hardware errors. SymPLFIED comprehensively enumerates all transient hardware errors in registers, memory, and computation (expressed symbolically as value errors) that potentially evade detection and cause program failure. The framework uses symbolic execution to abstract the state of erroneous values in the program and model checking to comprehensively find all errors that evade detection. We demonstrate the use of SymPLFIED on a widely deployed aircraft collision avoidance application, tcas. Our results show that the SymPLFIED framework can be used to uncover hard-to-detect catastrophic cases caused by transient errors in programs that may not be exposed by random fault injection-based validation. Further, the errors exposed by the framework help us formulate a set of error detectors for the application to avoid the catastrophic case and other incorrect outcomes.

Description: In delay tolerant networks (DTNs), the lack of continuous connectivity, network partitioning, and long delays make design of network protocols very challenging. Previous DTN research mainly focuses on routing and information propagation. However, with a large number of wireless devices' participation, it becomes crucial regarding how to maintain efficient and dynamic topology of the DTN. In this paper, we study the topology control problem in a predictable DTN, where the time-evolving network topology is known a priori or can be predicted. We first model such time-evolving network as a directed space-time graph that includes both spacial and temporal information. The aim of topology control is to build a sparse structure from the original space-time graph such that 1) the network is still connected over time and supports DTN routing between any two nodes; 2) the total cost of the structure is minimized. We prove that this problem is NP-hard, and propose two greedy-based methods that can significantly reduce the total cost of topology while maintaining the connectivity over time. We also introduce another version of the topology control problem by requiring that the least cost path for any two nodes in this constructed structure is still cost-efficient compared with the one in the original graph. Two greedy-based methods are provided for such a problem. Simulations have been conducted on both random DTN networks and real-world DTN tracing data. Results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methods.

In this paper, we propose an improved authenticated key transfer protocol based on Shamir's secret sharing. The proposed protocol achieves key confidentiality due to security of Shamir's secret sharing and provides key authentication by broadcasting a single authentication message to all members. Furthermore, the proposed scheme resists against both insider and outsider attacks.

Description: We propose a new efficient algorithm for solving the cluster labeling problem in support vector clustering (SVC). The proposed algorithm analyzes the topology of the function describing the SVC cluster contours and explores interconnection paths between critical points separating distinct cluster contours. This process allows distinguishing disjoint clusters and associating each point to its respective one. The proposed algorithm implements a new fast method for detecting and classifying critical points while analyzing the interconnection patterns between them. Experiments indicate that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the accuracy of the SVC labeling process in the presence of clusters of complex shape, while reducing the processing time required by existing SVC labeling algorithms by orders of magnitude.

Description: An object can move with various speeds and arbitrarily changing directions. Given a bounded area where a set of objects moving around, there are some typical moving styles of the objects at different local regions due to the geography nature or other spatiotemporal conditions. Not only the paths that the objects move along, we also want to know how different groups of objects move with various speeds. Therefore, given a set of collected trajectories spreading in a bounded area, we are interested in discovering the typical moving styles in different regions of all the monitored moving objects. These regional typical moving styles are regarded as the profile of the monitored moving objects, which may help reflect the geoinformation of the observed area and the moving behaviors of the observed moving objects. In this paper, we present DivCluST, an approach to finding regional typical moving styles by dividing and clustering the trajectories in consideration of both the spatial and temporal constraints. Different from the existing works that consider only the spatial properties or just the interesting regions of trajectories, DivCluST focuses more on typical movements in local regions of a bounded area and takes the temporal information into account when designing the criteria for trajectory dividing and the distance measurement for adaptive $(k)$-means clustering. Extensive experiments on three types of real data sets with specially designed visualization are presented to show the effectiveness of DivCluST.

Description: We consider the problem of ordinal classification with monotonicity constraints. It differs from usual classification by handling background knowledge about ordered classes, ordered domains of attributes, and about a monotonic relationship between an evaluation of an object on the attributes and its class assignment. In other words, the class label (output variable) should not decrease when attribute values (input variables) increase. Although this problem is of great practical importance, it has received relatively low attention in machine learning. Among existing approaches to learning with monotonicity constraints, the most general is the nonparametric approach, where no other assumption is made apart from the monotonicity constraints assumption. The main contribution of this paper is the analysis of the nonparametric approach from statistical point of view. To this end, we first provide a statistical framework for classification with monotonicity constraints. Then, we focus on learning in the nonparametric setting, and we consider two approaches: the "plug-in" method (classification by estimating first the class conditional distribution) and the direct method (classification by minimization of the empirical risk). We show that these two methods are very closely related. We also perform a thorough theoretical analysis of their statistical and computational properties, confirmed in a computational experiment.

Description: In this paper, we present a novel method aiming at multidimensional sequence classification. We propose a novel sequence representation, based on its fuzzy distances from optimal representative signal instances, called statemes. We also propose a novel modified clustering discriminant analysis algorithm minimizing the adopted criterion with respect to both the data projection matrix and the class representation, leading to the optimal discriminant sequence class representation in a low-dimensional space, respectively. Based on this representation, simple classification algorithms, such as the nearest subclass centroid, provide high classification accuracy. A three step iterative optimization procedure for choosing statemes, optimal discriminant subspace and optimal sequence class representation in the final decision space is proposed. The classification procedure is fast and accurate. The proposed method has been tested on a wide variety of multidimensional sequence classification problems, including handwritten character recognition, time series classification and human activity recognition, providing very satisfactory classification results.

Description: Uncertainty accompanies our life processes and covers almost all fields of scientific studies. Two general categories of uncertainty, namely, aleatory uncertainty and epistemic uncertainty, exist in the world. While aleatory uncertainty refers to the inherent randomness in nature, derived from natural variability of the physical world (e.g., random show of a flipped coin), epistemic uncertainty origins from human's lack of knowledge of the physical world, as well as ability of measuring and modeling the physical world (e.g., computation of the distance between two cities). Different kinds of uncertainty call for different handling methods. Aggarwal, Yu, Sarma, and Zhang et al. have made good surveys on uncertain database management based on the probability theory. This paper reviews multidisciplinary uncertainty processing activities in diverse fields. Beyond the dominant probability theory and fuzzy theory, we also review information-gap theory and recently derived uncertainty theory. Practices of these uncertainty handling theories in the domains of economics, engineering, ecology, and information sciences are also described. It is our hope that this study could provide insights to the database community on how uncertainty is managed in other disciplines, and further challenge and inspire database researchers to develop more advanced data management techniques and tools to cope with a variety of uncertainty issues in the real world.

Description: Box queries (or window queries) are a type of query which specifies a set of allowed values in each dimension. Indexing feature vectors in the multidimensional Nonordered Discrete Data Spaces (NDDS) for efficient box queries are becoming increasingly important in many application domains such as genome sequence databases. Most of the existing work in this field targets the similarity queries (range queries and k-NN queries). Box queries, however, are fundamentally different from similarity queries. Hence, the same indexing schemes designed for similarity queries may not be efficient for box queries. In this paper, we present a new indexing structure specifically designed for box queries in the NDDS. Unique characteristics of the NDDS are exploited to develop new node splitting heuristics. For the BoND-tree, we also provide theoretical analysis to show the optimality of the proposed heuristics. Extensive experiments with synthetic data demonstrate that the proposed scheme is significantly more efficient than the existing ones when applied to support box queries in NDDSs. We also show effectiveness of the proposed scheme in a real-world application of primer design for genome sequence databases.

Description: Personalized activity recognition usually has the problem of highly biased activity patterns among different tasks/persons. Traditional methods face problems on dealing with those conflicted activity patterns. We try to effectively model the activity patterns among different persons via casting this personalized activity recognition problem as a multitask learning issue. We propose a novel online multitask learning method for large-scale personalized activity recognition. In contrast with existing work of multitask learning that assumes fixed task relationships, our method can automatically discover task relationships from real-world data. Convergence analysis shows reasonable convergence properties of the proposed method. Experiments on two different activity data sets demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms existing methods in activity recognition.

Description: In recent years, the content-based publish/subscribe , has become a popular paradigm to decouple information producers and consumers with the help of brokers. Unfortunately, when users register their personal interests to the brokers, the privacy pertaining to filters defined by honest subscribers could be easily exposed by untrusted brokers, and this situation is further aggravated by the collusion attack between untrusted brokers and compromised subscribers. To protect the filter privacy, we introduce an anonymizer engine to separate the roles of brokers into two parts, and adapt the $(k)$-anonymity and $(ell)$-diversity models to the content-based pub/sub. When the anonymization model is applied to protect the filter privacy, there is an inherent tradeoff between the anonymization level and the publication redundancy. By leveraging partial-order-based generalization of filters to track filters satisfying $(k)$-anonymity and $(ell)$-diversity, we design algorithms to minimize the publication redundancy. Our experiments show the proposed scheme, when compared with studied counterparts, has smaller forwarding cost while achieving comparable attack resilience.
