Beschreibung: Electron Beam Melting (EBM) is a metal powder bed fusion (PBF) process in which the heat source is an electron beam. Differently from other metal PBF processes, today, EBM is used for mass production. As-built EBM parts are clearly recognisable by their surface roughness, which is, in some cases, one of the major limitations of the EBM process. The aim of this work is to investigate the effects of the orientation and the slope of the EBM surfaces on the surface roughness. Additionally, the machine repeatability is studied by measuring the roughness of surfaces built at different positions on the start plate. To these aims, a specific artefact was designed. Replicas of the artefact were produced using an Arcam A2X machine and Ti6Al4V powder. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were applied to investigate whether the surface morphology was affected by process factors. The results show significant differences between the upward and downward surfaces. The upward surfaces appear less rough than the downward ones, for which a lower standard deviation was obtained in the results. The roughness of the upward surfaces is linearly influenced by the sloping angle, while the heat distribution on the cross-section was found to be a key factor in explaining the roughness of the downward surfaces.

Beschreibung: The aim of this work was to study expansively the process of the eutectoidal phase transformation of 2507-type super-duplex stainless steel. Three sample sets were prepared. The first sample set was made to investigate the effect of the previous cold rolling and heat treatment for the eutectoidal phase transformation. Samples were cold rolled at seven different rolling reductions which was followed by heat treatment at five different temperatures. The second sample set was prepared to determine the activation energy of the eutectoidal decomposition process using the Arrhenius equation. Samples were cold rolled at seven different rolling reductions and were heat treated at the same temperature during eight different terms. A third sample set was made to study how another plastic-forming technology, beside the cold rolling, can influence the eutectoidal decomposition. Samples were elongated by single axis tensile stress and were heat treated at the same temperature. The results of the first and the third sample sets were compared. The rest δ-ferrite contents were calculated using the results of AC and DC magnetometer measurements. DC magnetometer was used as a feritscope device in this work. Light microscope and electron back scattering diffraction (EBSD) images demonstrated the process of the eutectoidal decomposition. The thermoelectric power and the hardness of the samples were measured. The results of the thermoelectric power measurement were compared with the results of the δ-ferrite content measurement. The accurate value of the coercive field was determined by a Foerster-type DC coercimeter device.

Beschreibung: Over the years, the cellular mobile network has evolved from a wireless plain telephone system to a very complex system providing telephone service, Internet connectivity and many interworking capabilities with other networks. Its air interface performance has increased drastically over time, leading to high throughput and low latency. Changes to the core network, however, have been slow and incremental, with increased complexity worsened by the necessity of backwards-compatibility with older-generation systems such as the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM). In this paper, a new virtualized Peer-to-Peer (P2P) core network architecture is presented. The key idea of our approach is that each user is assigned a private virtualized copy of the whole core network. This enables a higher degree of security and novel services that are not possible in today’s architecture. We describe the new architecture, focusing on its main elements, IP addressing, message flows, mobility management, and scalability. Furthermore, we will show some significant advantages this new architecture introduces. Finally, we investigate the performance of our architecture by analyzing voice-call traffic available in a database of a large U.S. cellular network provider.

Beschreibung: The ongoing digital transformation has the potential to revolutionize nearly all industrial manufacturing processes. However, its concrete requirements and implications are still not sufficiently investigated. In order to establish a common understanding, a multitude of initiatives have published guidelines, reference frameworks and specifications, all intending to promote their particular interpretation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). As a result of the inconsistent use of terminology, heterogeneous structures and proposed processes, an opaque landscape has been created. The consequence is that both new users and experienced experts can hardly manage to get an overview of the amount of information and publications, and make decisions on what is best to use and to adopt. This work contributes to the state of the art by providing a structured analysis of existing reference frameworks, their classifications and the concerns they target. We supply alignments of shared concepts, identify gaps and give a structured mapping of regarded concerns at each part of the respective reference architectures. Furthermore, the linking of relevant industry standards and technologies to the architectures allows a more effective search for specifications and guidelines and supports the direct technology adoption.

Beschreibung: This paper presents the results of investigations into the effect of freeze–thaw cycling on the failure of fibre-cement boards and on the changes taking place in their structure. Fibre-cement board specimens were subjected to one and ten freeze–thaw cycles and then investigated under three-point bending by means of the acoustic emission method. An artificial neural network was employed to analyse the results yielded by the acoustic emission method. The investigations conclusively proved that freeze–thaw cycling had an effect on the failure of fibre-cement boards, as indicated mainly by the fall in the number of acoustic emission (AE) events recognized as accompanying the breaking of fibres during the three-point bending of the specimens. SEM examinations were carried out to gain better insight into the changes taking place in the structure of the tested boards. Interesting results with significance for building practice were obtained.

Beschreibung: This paper presents the forecasting of the wear of working elements in an abrasive soil mass using the theoretical wear model. One of the widely used models providing a basis for the relationships describing wear is the Holm-Archard model. This relationship describes abrasive wear because of the contact between two bodies. The model assumes that the wear of an operating part is directly proportional to the sliding force and distance and inversely proportional to the hardness of the material of the part. To date, the model has not been verified in the wear of a soil mass, which is a discrete friction surface. Four grades of steel resistant to abrasive wear, intended for the manufacturing of operating parts exposed to wear within a soil mass, Hardox 500, XAR 600, TBL Plus and B27, were subjected to testing. TBL Plus steel was characterised by the smallest wear irrespective of the soil type. In turn, the highest values of the wear were noted in the light soil for Hardox 500, in the medium soil for XAR 600, while in the heavy soil for B27. Based on the obtained results, a high correlation coefficient was noted, with the highest values obtained for light and heavy soils.

Beschreibung: The genus Yersinia contains three well-recognized human pathogens, including Y. enterocolitica, Y. pestis, and Y. pseudotuberculosis. Various domesticated and wild animals carry Yersinia in their intestines. Spread to individuals arises from eating food or water contaminated by infected human or animal faeces. Interaction with infected pets and domestic stock may also lead to infection. Yersinia is able to multiply at temperatures found in normal refrigerators; hence, a large number of the bacteria may be present if meat is kept without freezing. Yersinia is also rarely transmitted by blood transfusion, because it is able to multiply in stored blood products. Infection with Yersinia can cause yersiniosis, a serious bacterial infection associated with fever, abdominal pain and cramps, diarrhea, joint pain, and symptoms similar to appendicitis in older children and adults. This paper describes a novel immunosensor approach using graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as enzyme mimics in an electrochemical sensor set up to provide an efficient diagnostic method for Y. enterecolitica. The optimum assay conditions were initially determined and the developed immunosensor was subsequently used for the detection of the bacterium in milk and human serum. The GQD-immunosensor enabled the quantification of Y. enterocolitica in a wide concentration range with a high sensitivity (LODmilk = 5 cfu mL−1 and LODserum = 30 cfu mL−1) and specificity. The developed method can be used for any pathogenic bacteria detection for clinical and food samples without pre-sample treatment. Offering a very rapid, specific and sensitive detection with a label-free system, the GQD-based immunosensor can be coupled with many electrochemical biosensors.

Beschreibung: In this paper, a 2-node beam element is developed based on Quasi-3D beam theory and mixed formulation for static bending of functionally graded (FG) beams. The transverse shear strains and stresses of the proposed beam element are parabolic distributions through the thickness of the beam and the transverse shear stresses on the top and bottom surfaces of the beam vanish. The proposed beam element is free of shear-looking without selective or reduced integration. The material properties of the functionally graded beam are assumed to vary according to the power-law index of the volume fraction of the constituents through the thickness of the beam. The numerical results of this study are compared with published results to illustrate the accuracy and convenience rate of the new beam element. The influence of some parametrics on the bending behavior of FGM beams is investigated.

Beschreibung: The high-temperature deformation behavior of Q345 steel is detected by a Gleeble-3800 thermal simulator. The Arrhenius constitutive equation for high-temperature flow stress and the dynamic recrystallization model are constructed. With the secondary development technology, customized modifications are made on existing Deform-3D software. The constructed constitutive model and dynamic recrystallization model are embedded into Deform-3D to realize the secondary development of Deform-3D. The grain size and volume percentage distribution of dynamic recrystallization are obtained by simulating the shear connection process at high temperature and high speed. The results show that the constitutive equation and the dynamic recrystallization model constructed in this paper can be used to predict the evolution of the microstructure. The difference between the prediction results and the experimental data is about 3%. The accuracy of Arrhenius constitutive equation, dynamic recrystallization model and the feasibility of software secondary development are verified.

Beschreibung: Bio-inspired functionally graded cellular materials (FGCM) have improved performance in energy absorption compared with a uniform cellular material (UCM). In this work, sheet-based and strut-based gyroid cellular structures with graded densities are designed and manufactured by stereo-lithography (SLA). For comparison, uniform structures are also designed and manufactured, and the graded structures are generated with different gradients. The mechanical behaviors of these structures under compressive loads are investigated. Furthermore, the anisotropy and effective elastic modulus of sheet-based and strut-based unit gyroid cellular structures are estimated by a numerical homogenization method. On the one hand, it is found from the numerical results that the sheet-based gyroid tends to be isotropic, and the elastic modulus of sheet-based gyroid is larger than the strut-based gyroid at the same volume fraction. On the other hand, the graded cellular structure has novel deformation and mechanical behavior. The uniform structure exhibits overall deformation and collapse behavior, whereas the graded cellular structure shows layer-by-layer deformation and collapse behavior. Furthermore, the uniform sheet-based gyroid is not only stiffer but also better in energy absorption capacity than the uniform strut-based gyroid structure. Moreover, the graded cellular structures have better energy absorption capacity than the uniform structures. These significant findings indicate that sheet-based gyroid cellular structure with graded densities have potential applications in various industrial applications, such as in crashworthiness.

Beschreibung: To address the increasing air pollution caused by vehicle exhaust, environment-friendly pavement materials that possesses exhaust-purifying properties were prepared using common cement concrete and porous cement concrete as the base of photocatalyst nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2), respectively. Firstly, Fe3+-doped TiO2 powder was prepared by applying planetary high-energy ball milling in order to improve the efficiency of the semiconductor photocatalyst for degrading vehicle exhausts. Two nano-TiO2, namely the original and modified nanomaterials, were adopted to produce the photocatalytic cement concretes subsequently. The physicochemical properties of the modified powder, as well as the mechanical and photocatalytic properties of TiO2-modified concrete, were characterized using a suite of complementary techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), compressive strength and degradation efficiency tests. The results show that the ball milling method not only successfully doped Fe3+ into catalysts but also caused significant changes in: (1) decreased particle sizes, (2) more amorphous morphology, (3) decreased percentage of the most thermodynamically stable crystal facet, and (4) increased percentage of other high gas sensing crystal facets. Both the original and modified nano-TiO2 can improve the concrete strength while the strengthening effect of modified nanomaterials is superior. It is pronounced that the photocatalytic property of the modified nano-TiO2 is much better than that of the original nano particles, and the degradation rate of porous concrete is also better than common concrete when exposed to the same photocatalyst content. In a comprehensive consideration of both mechanical performance and degradation efficiency, the recommended optimum dosage of TiO2 is 3% to 4% for exhaust-purifying concrete.

Beschreibung: An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect ofnano-SiO2 and steel fiber content on the durability of concrete. Five different dosages of nano-SiO2 particles and five volume dosages of steel fiber were used. The durability of concretes includes permeability resistance, cracking resistance, carbonation resistance, and freezing-thawing resistance, and these were evaluated by the water permeation depth, number of cracks, total cracking area per unit area of the specimens, carbonation depth of the specimens, and the relative dynamic elastic modulus of the specimens after freezing-thawing cycles, respectively. The results indicate that the addition of nano-SiO2 particles significantly improves the durability of concrete when the content of nano-SiO2 is limited within a certain range. With the increase of nano-SiO2 content, the durability of concrete first increases and then decreases. An excessive number of nano-SiO2 particles could have an adverse effect on the durability of the concrete. The addition of the correct amount of steel fibers improves the carbonation resistance of concrete containing nano-particles, but excessive steel fiber reduces the carbonation resistance. Moreover, the addition of steel fibers reduces the permeability resistance of concrete containing nano-particles. The incorporation of steel fiber enhanced the freezing-thawing resistance and cracking resistance of concrete containing nano-particles. With increasing steel fiber content, the freezing-thawing resistance of the concrete containing nano-particles increases, and the cracking resistance of the concrete decreases gradually.

Beschreibung: A mixture of red and blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs; at a ratio of 7:3, respectively) were used to analyze the effects of different photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFDs) (40, 80, and 120 µmol m−2 s−1 hereafter known as LED 40, 80, and 120, respectively) on the micropropagation of Gerbera jamesonii Bolus shoots. The experiment also examined the effect of 6-benzyladenine (BA) in 1, 2.5, and 5 µM concentrations in the media. Biometrical observations and analyses of leaf morphometry and photosynthetic pigment content were conducted. Shoot multiplication increased with an increasing BA concentration. A PPFD of 80 µmol m−2 s−1 and 5 µM BA is suggested as efficient for shoot propagation and economically viable. LED 120 increased the leaf blade area and its width, and circularity and elongation ratios. The intensity of light did not affect the fresh weight, which increased at higher BA concentrations (2.5 and 5 μM). The dry weight content decreased with increasing cytokinin concentration; the greatest content was observed on media with 1 µM BA under PPFD 120 µmol m−2 s−1. LED 80 increased the photosynthetic pigments content in the leaves in comparison to the standard intensity of LED 40. Increased BA concentration raises the content of chlorophyll a.

Beschreibung: In this paper, we measure the systemic risk with a novel methodology, based on a “spatial-temporal” approach. We propose a new bank systemic risk measure to consider the two components of systemic risk: cross-sectional and time dimension. The aim is to highlight the “time-space dynamics” of contagion, i.e., if the CDS spread of bank i depends on the CDS spread of other banks. To do this, we use an advanced spatial econometrics design with a time-varying spatial dependence that can be interpreted as an index of the degree of cross-sectional spillovers. The findings highlight that the Eurozone banks have strong spatial dependence in the evolution of CDS spread, namely the contagion effect is present and persistent. Moreover, we analyse the role of the European Central Bank in managing contagion risk. We find that monetary policy has been effective in reducing systemic risk. However, the results show that systemic risk does not imply a policy intervention, highlighting how financial stability policy is not yet an objective.

Beschreibung: Service recommendation is one of the important means of service selection. Aiming at the problems of ignoring the influence of typical data sources such as service information and interaction logs on the similarity calculation of user preferences and insufficient consideration of dynamic trust relationship in traditional trust-based Web service recommendation methods, a novel approach for Web service recommendation based on advanced trust relationships is presented. After considering the influence of indirect trust paths, the improved calculation about indirect trust degree is proposed. By quantifying the popularity of service, the method of calculating user preference similarity is investigated. Furthermore, the dynamic adjustment mechanism of trust is designed by differentiating the effect of each service recommendation. Integrating these efforts, a service recommendation mechanism is introduced, in which a new service recommendation algorithm is described. Experimental results show that, compared with existing methods, the proposed approach not only has higher accuracy of service recommendation, but also can resist attacks from malicious users more effectively.

Beschreibung: Soil pH is a key factor affecting the growth of blueberries. Understanding the response mechanism of blueberries to different pH values and selecting suitable evaluation indexes are the basis of breeding new blueberry cultivars with high pH tolerances. The effects of different soil pH treatments for 17 months on the plant growth, fruit yield, photosynthetic characteristics, and leaf microelement concentration of Vaccinium ashei Reade ‘Climax’ and V. corymbosum hybrid ‘Chaoyue No. 1′ were studied. Plant height, main stem diameter, branch number per plant, leaf dry weight, stem dry weight, root dry weight, and total dry weight decreased with increasing soil pH. With an increase in soil pH, the first flowering date, 50% flowering date, first ripening date, and 50% ripening date of the two cultivars were postponed, and the flower bud numbers per plant, the floret numbers per bud, and yield per plant showed a downward trend. Moreover, the fruit quality decreased, which was reflected in the increase in the titratable acid content (TA) and the decrease in the total soluble solids content (TSS) and the TSS:TA ratio in the high pH treatment. With increasing soil pH, the chlorophyll content index (CCI), maximal photochemical efficiency of the PSII (Fv/Fm), quantum photosynthetic yield of the PSII (Y(II)) and net photosynthetic rate (Pn) of the two cultivars showed a downward trend, and some microelement concentrations in the leaves were imbalanced. Under high pH treatment, ‘Chaoyue No. 1′ had a relatively higher plant biomass and fruit yield, so it had a stronger tolerance to high pH than ‘Climax’ did. More strongly acidified rhizosphere soil capacity, as well as higher CCI, Fv/Fm, Y(II), and Pn values were the main reasons for the high pH tolerance of ‘Chaoyue No. 1′. Compared with destructive biomass indicators such as plant weight, nondestructive indicators such as CCI, Fv/Fm, and Y(II) can be more valuable indicators for fast and accurate evaluation of blueberry tolerance to high pH at early stages of treatment.

Beschreibung: We explore the class of positive integers n that admit idempotent factorizations n = p ¯ q ¯ such that λ ( n ) ∣ ( p ¯ − 1 ) ( q ¯ − 1 ) , where λ is the Carmichael lambda function. Idempotent factorizations with p ¯ and q ¯ prime have received the most attention due to their cryptographic advantages, but there are an infinite number of n with idempotent factorizations containing composite p ¯ and/or q ¯ . Idempotent factorizations are exactly those p ¯ and q ¯ that generate correctly functioning keys in the Rivest–Shamir–Adleman (RSA) 2-prime protocol with n as the modulus. While the resulting p ¯ and q ¯ have no cryptographic utility and therefore should never be employed in that capacity, idempotent factorizations warrant study in their own right as they live at the intersection of multiple hard problems in computer science and number theory. We present some analytical results here. We also demonstrate the existence of maximally idempotent integers, those n for which all bipartite factorizations are idempotent. We show how to construct them, and present preliminary results on their distribution.

Beschreibung: Due to its possible utilization in cosmetics, medicine and crop protection, as a valuable alternative to petrochemical-derived products, hemp essential oil is now considered a product with high value added and a promising marketing potential. This experiment was conducted with the aim of evaluating the effect of four different locations of Northern Italy during two years (four environments) and three hemp monoecious varieties on the production and quality of essential oils (EOs) obtained by inflorescences harvested at full flowering of female flowers. The highest inflorescence yield was obtained at Maiano 2017, where a superficial groundwater layer (1.5 m) was present, with values that ranged from 1.69 of Fedora to 2.06 t ha−1 of Futura. EOs production ranged between 3.4 and 4.9 L ha−1, affected mainly by the variety effect. The terpene in EOs, very similar between varieties and environments, was mainly composed of sesquiterpenes (caryophillene and humulene, as the most abundant) rather than monoterpenes (α-pinene, β-myrcene and trans-β-ocimene, in particular). Phytocannabinoids, and in particular cannabidiol (CBD), were not removed from tissues by the steam during hydrodistillation, and if this is confirmed by further experiments, the residual biomass, now considered as waste, could assume significant importance as a source for further utilization.

Beschreibung: This work deals with the feasibility and reliability about the use of shape memory alloys (SMAs) as mechanical actuators for solar sail self-deployment instead of heavy and bulky mechanical booms. Solar sails exploit radiation pressure a as propulsion system for the exploration of the solar system. Sunlight is used to propel space vehicles by reflecting solar photons from a large and light-weight material, so that no propellant is required for primary propulsion. In this work, different small-scale solar sail prototypes (SSP) were studied, manufactured, and tested for bending and in three different environmental conditions to simulate as much as possible the real operating conditions where the solar sails work. Kapton is the most suitable material for sail production and, in the space missions till now, activated booms as deployment systems have always been used. In the present work for the activation of the SMA elements some visible lamps have been employed to simulate the solar radiation and time-temperature diagrams have been acquired for different sail geometries and environmental conditions. Heat transfer mechanisms have been discussed and the minimum distance from the sun allowing the full self-deployment of the sail have also been calculated.

Beschreibung: Google’s Material Design, created in 2014, led to the extended application of floating action buttons (FAB) in user interfaces of web pages and mobile applications. FAB’s roll is to trigger an activity either on the present screen, or it can play out an activity that makes another screen. A few specialists in user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design are sceptical regarding the usability of FAB in the interfaces of both web pages and mobile applications. They claim that the use of FAB easily distracts users and that it interferes with using other important functions of the applications, and it is unusable in applications designed for iOS systems. The aim of this paper is to investigate by an experiment the quality of experience (QoE) of a static and animated FAB and compare it to the toolbar alternative. The experimental results of different testing methods rejected the hypothesis that the usage and animation of this UI element has a positive influence on the application usability. However, its static and animated utilization enhanced the ratings of hedonic and aesthetic features of the user experience, justifying the usage of this type of button.

Beschreibung: The flux pinning properties of reacted-and-pressed Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 powder were measured using magnetic hysteresis loops in the temperature range 20 K ≤ T ≤ 35 K. The scaling analysis of the flux pinning forces ( F p = j c × B , with j c denoting the critical current density) following the Dew-Hughes model reveals a dominant flux pinning provided by normal-conducting point defects ( δ l -pinning) with only small irreversibility fields, H irr , ranging between 0.5 T (35 K) and 16 T (20 K). Kramer plots demonstrate a linear behavior above an applied field of 0.6 T. The samples were further characterized by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis to elucidate the origin of the flux pinning. We compare our data with results of Weiss et al. (bulks) and Yao et al. (tapes), revealing that the dominant flux pinning in the samples for applications is provided mainly by grain boundary pinning, created by the densification procedures and the mechanical deformation applied.

Beschreibung: This work investigates and improves the thermal dynamics of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) wall containing phase change material (PCM). The PCM is paraffin wax loaded into conical holes drilled into the AAC. Filled AAC with three different numbers of PCM-filled holes (2, 3, and 4 conical holes, which are designated as AAC-2H, AAC-3H, and AAC-4H, respectively) as well as the unfilled original AAC were both tested under two different conditions: indoors (with controlled temperature) and outdoors (with actual weather). For the indoor experiment, a heater was used as a thermal source and set up to maintain the testing temperature at one of three levels: 40 °C, 50 °C, or 60 °C. The wall temperature was then measured on the surface with each horizontally-positioned wall as well as four different positions at various depths below the surface of the wall. It was found that AAC-4H was the optimum condition, which can produce outstandingly a time lag of approximately 27%, reduce a decrement factor of approximately 31%, and also decrease the room temperature. This reached approximately 9% when compared with that of ordinary AAC at the controlled testing temperature of 60 °C. All samples were further tested in actual weather to confirm the thermal performances of AAC-4H. Thermal effectiveness of AAC-4H was improved by extending approximately a 14.3% time lag, which reduces approximately a 4.3% decrement factor and achieving approximately 5% lower room temperature when compared with ordinary AAC.

Beschreibung: In this paper, the hot deformability and mechanical properties of a novel Mn- and Nb- containing TiAl alloy were studied systematically with the use of isothermal compression experiments. The results show that the alloy has low deformation resistance and a low activation energy (392 KJ/mol), suggesting that the alloy has good hot deformability. A processing map was established, which shows that the present alloy has a smaller instability region and wider hot working window compared with other TiAl alloys. Microstructural observation shows that the initial lamellae completely transformed into fine equiaxial γ grains when the alloy was compressed at 1200 °C/0.01 s−1, which corresponds to the optimum deformation condition. Based on the above results, an intact TiAl billet was successfully fabricated by one-step large deformation using a four-column hydraulic machine. The microstructure of the billet is almost completely composed of recrystallized γ grains with large angle boundaries. Tensile testing shows the billet exhibits high tensile strength (780 MPa) and high elongation (1.44%) simultaneously, which benefits from fine γ grains with an average size of 4.9 μm. The ductile–brittle transition temperature is between 750–800 °C.

Beschreibung: Nanoporous metals represent a fascinating class of materials. They consist of a bi-continuous three-dimensional network of randomly intersecting pores and ligaments where the ligaments form the skeleton of the structure. The open-pore structure allows for applying a thin electrolytic coating on the ligaments. In this paper, we will investigate the stiffening effect of a polymer coating numerically. Since the coating adds an additional difficulty for the discretization of the microstructure by finite elements, we apply the finite cell method. This allows for deriving a mesh in a fully automatic fashion from the high resolution 3D voxel model stemming from the 3D focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope tomography data of nanoporous gold. By manipulating the voxel model in a straightforward way, we add a thin polymer layer of homogeneous thickness numerically and study its effect on the macroscopic elastic properties systematically. In order to lower the influence of the boundary conditions on the results, the window method, which is known from homogenization procedures, is applied. In the second part of the paper, we fill the gap between numerical simulations and experimental investigations and determine real material properties of an electrolytic applied polypyrrole coating by inverse computations. The simulations provide an estimate for the mechanical properties of the ligaments and the polymeric coating and are in accordance with experimental data.

Beschreibung: In order to better provide a theoretical basis for the machining of luxury vinyl tiles, a helical milling experiment was conducted by using diamond cutting tools, and special attention was given to the trends of cutting force and surface roughness in respect to tool geometry and cutting parameters. The results showed that the resultant force was negatively correlated to the helix angle and cutting speed, but positively correlated with the cutting depth. Then, that the surface roughness increased with a decrease of the helix angle and an increase of cutting depth, while as cutting speed raised, the surface roughness first declined and then increased. Thirdly, the cutting depth was shown to have the greatest influence on both cutting force and surface roughness, followed by helix angle and cutting speed. Fourth, the contribution of cutting depth only was significant to cutting force, while both the helix angle and cutting speed had insignificant influence on the cutting force and surface roughness. Finally, the optimal cutting conditions were proposed for industrial production, in which the helix angle, cutting speed and cutting depth were 70°, 2200 m/min and 0.5 mm, respectively.

Beschreibung: A Ru-doped phospho-tungstic Wells–Dawson polyoxometalate (POM) was successfully applied as homogeneous catalyst for glycerol hydrogenolysis in aqueous media. The synthesized compound showed superior catalytic activity compared to classical homogeneous/heterogeneous Ru catalysts like RuCl3 and Ru/C under identical reaction conditions, whereas the analogous POM doped with Pd or Pt proved far less activity. Detailed characterization of the POMs was performed using 31P-NMR to identify characteristic phosphorous peaks of the heteroatoms, infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) to confirm characteristic P-O and W-O-W vibrations, powder XRD for comparison of crystal structures, and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductive-coupled plasma (ICP) analysis to determine elemental composition. Variation of the reaction parameters for the best performing Ru-doped POM catalyst showed that substrate concentration played an important role for both product selectivity and conversion. Moreover, medium hydrogen pressure and high stirring speed were key factors to obtain highly selective conversion of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol.

Beschreibung: Bone defects repair represents a public and urgent problem in clinical practice, in fact, every year, more than two million patients required new treatments for bone injuries. Today a complete vascularization is strategic in bone formation, representing a new frontier for clinical application. Aim of this research has been developed a three-dimensional (3D) coculture platform using a bovine pericardium collagen membrane (BioR) loaded with human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) and endothelial differentiated cells from hPDLSCs (E-hPDLSCs) able to undergo toward osteoangiogenesis differentiation process. First, we have characterized at confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) level the E-hPDLSCs phenotype profile, through CD31 and CD34 markers expression and the ability to tube vessel formation. Real Time-Polimerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) and western blotting analyses revealed the upregulation of Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), Collagen 1A1 (COL1A1), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-A (VEGF-A) genes and proteins in the living construct composed by hPDLSCs + E-hPDSCs/BioR. Human PDLSCs + E-hPDLSCs/BioR construct showed also an enhacement of de novo synthesis of osteocalcin. Given that, the extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK)/mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) transduction signaling was involved in the osteogenesis and angiogenesis process, the ERK1/2 protein level at biochemical level, in our experimental model, has been investigated. Our results evidenced an upregulation of ERK1/2 proteins level born in the living construct. In conclusion, we believe that the use of the hPDLSCs and E-hPDLSCs coculture togheter with BioR as substrate, could represent an efficient model able to activate through ERK1/2 signaling pathway the osteoangiogenesis process, and then representing a new potential engineered platform for surgeons during the repair and the healing of bone defects.

Beschreibung: The instability of diafiltration is a widespread problem in the practical application of microporous ceramic filtration membranes. In this paper, a series of microporous ceramic filter membranes were prepared using inexpensive standard sand and river sand as matrix materials. Semi-empirical formula for the effective permeability radius of ceramic membranes with respect to time was established from analysis of the response mechanism between water flow and material properties. Finally, on the basis of theoretical analysis, some measures were proposed to improve permeate flux. The experimental results showed that during the initial stage of filtration, the microporous ceramic filter membrane had a large change in permeate flux, and during the late stage of filtration, permeate flux tended to be stable. Over time, open porosity and closed porosity changed the actual seepage area of the ceramic membrane, and this affected the stability of permeate flux and final stable permeate flux. The roughness of the inner wall of microporous ceramic pores affected the hydraulic loss coefficient, and this controlled the outflow process. Trace elements that were rich in sand produced a large amount of glass phase after sintering. The glass phase was rich in polar groups and formed a temporary hydrogen bond with the small flow of water molecules. It led to an increase in viscous resistance effect of the side wall along the water flow and the extent of the permeate flux of the ceramic membrane changed with time.

Beschreibung: The role of small bioactive molecules (〈500 Da) in mechanisms improving resource use efficiency in plants under stress conditions draws increasing interest. One such molecule is omeprazole (OMP), a benzimidazole derivative and inhibitor of animal proton pumps shown to improve nitrate uptake and exclusion of toxic ions, especially of chloride from the cytosol of salt-stressed leaves. Currently, OMP was applied as substrate drench at two rates (0 or 10 μM) on hydroponic basil (Ocimum basilicum L. cv. Genovese) grown under decreasing NO3−:Cl− ratio (80:20, 60:40, 40:60, or 20:80). Chloride concentration and stomatal resistance increased while transpiration, net CO2 assimilation rate and beneficial ions (NO3−, PO43−, and SO42−) decreased with reduced NO3−:Cl− ratio under the 0 μM OMP treatment. The negative effects of chloride were not only mitigated by the 10 μM OMP application in all treatments, with the exception of 20:80 NO3−:Cl−, but plant growth at 80:20, 60:40, and 40:60 NO3−:Cl− ratios receiving OMP application showed maximum fresh yield (+13%, 24%, and 22%, respectively), shoot (+10%, 25%, and 21%, respectively) and root (+32%, 76%, and 75%, respectively) biomass compared to the corresponding untreated treatments. OMP was not directly involved in ion homeostasis and compartmentalization of vacuolar or apoplastic chloride. However, it was active in limiting chloride loading into the shoot, as manifested by the lower chloride concentration in the 80:20, 60:40, and 40:60 NO3−:Cl− treatments compared to the respective controls (−41%, −37%, and −24%), favoring instead that of nitrate and potassium while also boosting photosynthetic activity. Despite its unequivocally beneficial effect on plants, the large-scale application of OMP is currently limited by the molecule’s high cost. However, further studies are warranted to unravel the molecular mechanisms of OMP-induced reduction of chloride loading to shoot and improved salt tolerance.

Beschreibung: Three-dimensional finite element-based numerical analysis of Vickers indenter hardness test was conducted to investigate the effect of frictional conditions and material anisotropy on indentation results of deep drawing quality steel sheets. The strain hardening properties and Lankford’s coefficient were determined through the uniaxial tensile tests. The numerical computations were carried out using ABAQUS nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis software. Numerical simulations taken into account anisotropy of material described by Hill (1948) yield a criterion. The stress and strain distributions and loading–unloading characteristics were considered to study the response of the material. It was found that the hardness values seemed to be influenced by the value of the friction coefficient due to the pile-up phenomenon observed. The increasing of the friction coefficient led to a decrease of the pile-up value. Moreover, the width of the pile-ups differed from each other in the two perpendicular directions of measurement. Frictional conditions did not significantly affect the maximum force and the character of load–displacement curves. Frictional regime between the indenter and workpiece caused that the region of maximum residual stresses to be located in the subsurface.

Beschreibung: Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement has recently gained increased attention due to its lower amount of CO2 emissions, as compared to that of the ordinary Portland cement (OPC). This paper evaluates the impact of different types of fibers on the engineering features of CSA-based concretes at different water-cement ratios of 0.35 and 0.28. In this study, metallic fibers including double hooked-end steel fibers and hooked-end steel fibers, and non-metallic fibers (i.e., polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers) were utilized at fiber content of 1%. The mechanical properties of concretes were assessed at different curing ages. Dimensional stability of the concrete mixes was also examined. The morphology of the fractured specimens was studied by using the SEM method. The results indicate that the engineering properties of concrete were improved by introducing fibers to the concrete, irrespective of fiber type. The results show that DHE steel fiber has an important effect on the flexural performance of CSA cement-based concretes and results in deflection-hardening behavior. It was observed that fibers and particularly PVA fibers cause a decrease in shrinkage deformation. Microstructure tests demonstrate that prismatic ettringite is the main hydration product of CSA cement-based concrete. The SEM observation also confirms that the inclusion of CSA cement in concrete improves the cohesiveness between the fibers and cement matrix.

Beschreibung: As an intrinsic property, elasticity of soft material is affected significantly by the externally applied alternating magnetic field. Magnetostrictive properties of the grain-oriented (GO) silicon steel under DC-biased and multisinusoidal magnetizations are measured by using a laser-based measuring system. Magnetostriction curves of the GO silicon steel sheet under different magnetizations are obtained and the influence of frequency and DC bias on the magnetostrictive property is observed and analyzed based on the measured data. In addition, the spectrum of magnetostriction under harmonic magnetization is obtained, and the acoustic noise level of the GO silicon steel sheet represented by the A-weighted decibel value caused by magnetostriction is measured under DC-biased and multisinusoidal magnetizations. The measurement results are applied to the simulation of the three-limb laminated core model, and the effects of DC bias and harmonics on magnetic flux density and displacement are analyzed.

Beschreibung: The detection of cable corrosion is of great significance to the evaluation of cable safety performance. Based on the principle of spontaneous magnetic flux leakage (SMFL), a new method for predicting the corrosion width of cables is proposed. In this paper, in order to quantify the width of corrosion, the parameter about intersecting point distance between curves of magnetic flux component of x direction at different lift off heights (Dx) is proposed by establishing the theoretical model of the magnetic dipole of the rectangular corrosion defect. The MATLAB software was used to analyze the influencing factors of Dx. The results indicate that there exists an obvious linear relationship between the Dx and the y (lift off height), and the Dx–y curves converge to near the true corrosion width when y = 0. The 1/4 and 3/4 quantiles of the Dx–y image were used for linear fitting, which the intercept of the fitting equation was used to represent the predicted corrosion width. After the experimental study on the corrosion width detection for the parallel steel wire and steel strand, it is found that this method can effectively improve the detection accuracy, which plays an important role in cable safety assessment.

Beschreibung: This paper presents the concept of repairing the stand of a motorbike speedway stadium. The synchronized dancing of fans cheering during a meeting brought the stand into excessive resonance. The main goal of this research was to propose a method for the structural tuning of stadium stands. Non-destructive testing by vibration methods was conducted on a selected stand segment, the structure of which recurred on the remaining stadium segments. Through experiments, we determined the vibration forms throughout the stand, taking into account the dynamic impact of fans. Numerical analyses were performed on the 3-D finite element method (FEM) stadium model to identify the dynamic jump load function. The results obtained on the basis of sensitivity tests using the finite element method allowed the tuning of the stadium structure to successfully meet the requirements of the serviceability limit state.

Beschreibung: Sloshing experiments have increasingly received academic attention. Understanding the measurement errors in the sloshing impact pressures is an important parts of the sloshing experiments since these errors, which arise from experimental conditions, affect the subsequent results. As part of the research on the sources of the measurement errors, focused on the effects of surface conditions of pressure sensors on the measurement of impact pressures. Thirty-six integrated circuit piezoelectric pressure sensors were placed on the upper surfaces of a two-dimensional tank to measure the sloshing impact pressures under surge or pitch motions. For each motion, the experimental conditions were divided in two based on whether the surfaces of the sensors were dry or wet. The peak pressures of each test were measured as twenty repeated experiments to ensure reliability. The flow in the tank was visualized using a high-speed camera to observe and analyze macroscopic and microscopic phenomena along the sensor surface. Thermal shock effects were confirmed by varying the experimental temperature and that of the sensor surface. The effects of the wet surface and droplets formed on the sensor surface on pressure measurements are discussed.

Beschreibung: Finite element data form an important basis for engineers to undertake analysis and research. In most cases, it is difficult to generate the internal sections of finite element data and professional operations are required. To display the internal data of entities, a method for generating the arbitrary sections of finite element data based on radial basis function (RBF) interpolation is proposed in this paper. The RBF interpolation function is used to realize arbitrary surface cutting of the entity, and the section can be generated by the triangulation of discrete tangent points. Experimental studies have proved that the method is very convenient for allowing users to obtain visualization results for an arbitrary section through simple and intuitive interactions.

Beschreibung: Fullerene-based materials including C60 and doped C60 have previously been proposed as anodes for lithium ion batteries. It was also shown earlier that n- and p-doping of small molecules can substantially increase voltages and specific capacities. Here, we study ab initio the attachment of multiple lithium atoms to C60, nitrogen-doped C60 (n-type), and boron doped C60 (p-type). We relate the observed attachment energies (which determine the voltage) to changes in the electronic structure induced by Li attachment and by doping. We compare results with a GGA (generalized gradient approximation) functional and a hybrid functional and show that while they agree semi-quantitatively with respect to the expected voltages, there are qualitative differences in the electronic structure. We show that, contrary to small molecules, single atom n- and p-doping will not lead to practically useful modulation of the voltage–capacity curve beyond the initial stages of lithiation.

Beschreibung: Recent advances in high-resolution three-dimensional X-ray CT imaging have made it possible to visualize fluid configurations during multiphase displacement at the pore-scale. However, there is an inherited difficulty in image-based curvature measurements: the use of voxelized image data may introduce significant error, which has not—to date—been quantified. To find the best method to compute curvature from micro-CT images and quantify the likely error, we performed drainage and imbibition direct numerical simulations for an oil/water system on a bead pack and a Bentheimer sandstone. From the simulations, local fluid configurations and fluid pressures were obtained. We then investigated methods to compute curvature on the oil/water interface. The interface was defined in two ways; in one case the simulated interface with a sub-resolution smoothness was used, while the other was a smoothed interface extracted from synthetic segmented data based on the simulated phase distribution. The curvature computed on these surfaces was compared with that obtained from the simulated capillary pressure, which does not depend on the explicit consideration of the shape of the interface. As distinguished from previous studies which compared an average or peak curvature with the value derived from the measured macroscopic capillary pressure, our approach can also be used to study the pore-by-pore variation. This paper suggests the best method to compute curvature on images with a quantification of likely errors: local capillary pressures for each pore can be estimated to within 30% if the average radius of curvature is more than 6 times the image resolution, while the average capillary pressure can also be estimated to within 11% if the average radius of curvature is more than 10 times the image resolution.

Beschreibung: The use of new developed high-strength steel in concrete members can reduce steel bar congestion and construction costs. This research aims to study the behavior of concrete columns reinforced with new developed high-strength steel under eccentric loading. Ten reinforced concrete columns were fabricated and tested. The test variables were the transverse reinforcement amount and yield strength, eccentricity, and longitudinal reinforcement yield strength. The failure patterns were compression and tensile failure for columns subjected to small eccentricity and large eccentricity, respectively. The same level of post-peak deformability and ductility could only be obtained with a lower amount of transverse reinforcement when high-strength transverse reinforcements were used in columns subjected to small eccentricity. The high-strength longitudinal reinforcement improved the bearing capacity and post-peak deformability of the concrete columns. Furthermore, three different equivalent rectangular stress block (ERSB) parameters for predicting the bearing capacity of columns with high-strength steel are discussed based on test and simulated results. It is concluded that the China Code GB 50010-2010 overestimates the bearing capacity of columns with high-strength steel, whereas the bearing capacities computed using the America Code ACI 318-14 and Canada Code CSA A23.3-04 agree well with the test results.

Beschreibung: Wave run-up and dune overwash are typically assessed using empirical models developed for a specific range of often-simplistic conditions. Field experiments are essential in extending these formulae; yet obtaining comprehensive field data under extreme conditions is often challenging. Here, we use XBeach Surfbeat (XB-SB)—a shortwave-averaged but wave-group resolving numerical model—to complement a field campaign, with two main objectives: i) to assess the contribution of infragravity (IG) waves to washover development in a partially-sheltered area, with a highly complex bathymetry; and ii) to evaluate the unconventional nested-modeling approach that was applied. The analysis shows that gravity waves rapidly decrease across the embayment while IG waves are enhanced. Despite its exclusion of gravity-band swash, XB-SB is able to accurately reproduce both the large-scale hydrodynamics—wave heights and mean water levels across the 30 × 10 km embayment; and the local morphodynamics—steep post-storm dune profile and washover deposit. These findings show that the contribution of IG waves to dune overwash along the bay is significant and highlight the need for any method or model to consider IG waves when applied to similar environments. As many phase-averaged numerical models that are typically used for large-scale coastal applications exclude IG waves, XB-SB may prove to be a suitable alternative.

Beschreibung: There is a growing body of research that recognizes the potentials of biochar application in agricultural production systems. However, little is known about the effects of biochar, especially hydrochar, on production of containerized seedlings under nursery conditions. This study aimed to test the effects of hydrochar application on growth, quality, nutrient and heavy metal contents, and mycorrhizal association of containerized pine seedlings. The hydrochar used in this study was produced through hydrothermal carbonization of paper mill biosludge at 200 °C. Two forms of hydrochar (powder and pellet) were mixed with peat at ratios of 10% and 20% (v/v) under three levels of applied commercial fertilizer (nil, half and full rates). Application of hydrochar had positive or neutral effects on shoot biomass and stem diameter compared with control seedlings (without hydrochar) under tested fertilizer levels. Analysis of the natural logarithmic response ratios (LnRR) of quality index and nutrient and heavy metal uptake revealed that application of 20% (v/v) hydrochar powder or pellet with 50% fertilizer resulted in same quality pine seedlings with similar heavy metal (Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Cr) and nutrient (P, K, Ca and Mg) contents as untreated seedlings supplied with 100% fertilizer. Colonization percentage by ectomycorrhizae significantly increased when either forms of hydrochar were applied at a rate of 20% under unfertilized condition. The results of this study implied that application of proper rates of hydrochar from biosludge with adjusted levels of liquid fertilizer may reduce fertilizer requirements in pine nurseries.

Beschreibung: The article proposes the design of a test bench simulator to test a parallel hybrid propulsion architecture for aeronautical applications. The virtual test bench simulates, in a scaled version, the real test bench, designed for a power of about 0.4 MW. After presenting the architecture of the real propulsion system, the virtual test bench is described. The real system is basically composed by a paralleled electric motor and thermal engine which provide mechanical power to the propeller. Saving cost and volume the test bench is composed by electric motors simulates the behaviors of the real propulsion system despite their differences. The dynamic relationships expressing the transmission of torque between the components, and the method of down-sizing the power delivered are highlighted. Particular attention is given to the real inertia actions that must be simulated on the virtual test bench. An application of the proposed methodology is then presented through the simulation of the take-off phase, and the torque time histories, angular velocities and powers generated on the virtual test bench are used to verify the corresponding time histories expected in the real system.

Beschreibung: The number of documents published on the Web in languages other than English grows every year. As a consequence, the need to extract useful information from different languages increases, highlighting the importance of research into Open Information Extraction (OIE) techniques. Different OIE methods have dealt with features from a unique language; however, few approaches tackle multilingual aspects. In those approaches, multilingualism is restricted to processing text in different languages, rather than exploring cross-linguistic resources, which results in low precision due to the use of general rules. Multilingual methods have been applied to numerous problems in Natural Language Processing, achieving satisfactory results and demonstrating that knowledge acquisition for a language can be transferred to other languages to improve the quality of the facts extracted. We argue that a multilingual approach can enhance OIE methods as it is ideal to evaluate and compare OIE systems, and therefore can be applied to the collected facts. In this work, we discuss how the transfer knowledge between languages can increase acquisition from multilingual approaches. We provide a roadmap of the Multilingual Open IE area concerning state of the art studies. Additionally, we evaluate the transfer of knowledge to improve the quality of the facts extracted in each language. Moreover, we discuss the importance of a parallel corpus to evaluate and compare multilingual systems.

Since surface water is limited in the dry zone of Sri Lanka, agricultural production, especially of upland crops, relies on groundwater for irrigation. We sampled 29 wells in the Ulagalla cascade, a prominent TCS near Anuradhapura city in the dry zone of Sri Lanka, in Yala (dry) and Maha (wet) seasons, the two main cropping seasons in Sri Lanka. We evaluated the suitability of groundwater for irrigation using the analytic hierarchy process and geographical information system. Water quality did not vary notably between seasons. However, it deteriorated with the onset of high intensity heavy rain, especially during the Maha season. A water quality zoning map indicated that groundwater in 4% and 96% of the study area is suitable and moderately suitable for irrigation, respectively. Irrigation water quality in tank cascade landscapes and similar environments can be assessed using this methodology and our results.

Beschreibung: The objective of this paper is to present an integrated picture of the relationship between the waves and the modifications induced by them in the Romanian shoreline. Thus, the hydrodynamic processes at the Mangalia beaches, located in the southern side of the Romanian nearshore, are simulated using the modeling system Mike 21 SW (MIKE 21 Spectral Waves), developed by the Danish Hydration Institute (DHI). This is one of the newest spectral wave models, which can be used for regional- and local-scale simulations. The model has been calibrated and validated using buoy measurements. The analysis of the statistical parameters shows a good match between the model and the observed data. Furthermore, a model to compare the differences that occur on the beach profiles between the cold and warm seasons was developed. The results obtained indicate a reinforcement of the coastal erosion in the winter, when the waves are stronger (especially in January and February).

Beschreibung: This paper aims to explore the current status, research trends and hotspots related to the field of infrared detection technology through bibliometric analysis and visualization techniques based on the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) articles published between 1990 and 2018 using the VOSviewer and Citespace software tools. Based on our analysis, we first present the spatiotemporal distribution of the literature related to infrared detection technology, including annual publications, origin country/region, main research organization, and source publications. Then, we report the main subject categories involved in infrared detection technology. Furthermore, we adopt literature cocitation, author cocitation, keyword co-occurrence and timeline visualization analyses to visually explore the research fronts and trends, and present the evolution of infrared detection technology research. The results show that China, the USA and Italy are the three most active countries in infrared detection technology research and that the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique has the largest number of publications among related organizations. The most prominent research hotspots in the past five years are vibration thermal imaging, pulse thermal imaging, photonic crystals, skin temperature, remote sensing technology, and detection of delamination defects in concrete. The trend of future research on infrared detection technology is from qualitative to quantitative research development, engineering application research and infrared detection technology combined with other detection techniques. The proposed approach based on the scientific knowledge graph analysis can be used to establish reference information and a research basis for application and development of methods in the domain of infrared detection technology studies.

Beschreibung: Magnesium phosphate cements (MPC) have been demonstrated to have a superior bone regeneration capacity due to their good solubility under in vivo conditions. While in the past only aqueous MPC pastes have been applied, the current study describes the fabrication and in vitro/in vivo testing of an oil-based calcium doped magnesium phosphate (CaMgP) cement paste. Premixed oil-based pastes with CaMgP chemistry combine the advantages of conventional MPC such as high mechanical strength and good resorbability with a prolonged shelf-life and an easier clinical handling. The pastes set in an aqueous environment and predominantly form struvite and achieve a compressive strength of ~8–10 MPa after setting. The implantation into a drill-hole defect at the distal femoral condyle of New Zealand white rabbits over a course of 6 and 12 weeks demonstrated good biocompatibility of the materials without the formation of soft connective tissue or any signs of inflammation. In contrast to a hydroxyapatite forming reference paste, the premixed CaMgP pastes showed subsequent degradation and bony regeneration. The CaMgP cement pastes presented herein are promising bone replacement materials with excellent material properties for an improved and facilitated clinical application.

Beschreibung: The present paper reports a novel method to improve the properties of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) polymer foils suitable for applications in food packaging. It relates to the adsorption of chitosan-colloidal systems onto untreated and oxygen plasma-treated foil surfaces. It is hypothesized that the first coated layer of chitosan macromolecular solution enables excellent antibacterial properties, while the second (uppermost) layer contains a network of polyphenol resveratrol, embedded into chitosan nanoparticles, which enables antioxidant and antimicrobial properties simultaneously. X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed successful binding of both coatings onto foils as confirmed by gravimetric method. In addition, both attached layers (chitosan macromolecular solution and dispersion of chitosan nanoparticles with incorporated resveratrol) onto foils reduced oxygen permeability and wetting contact angle of foils; the latter indicates good anti-fog foil properties. Reduction of both oxygen permeability and wetting contact angle is more pronounced when foils are previously activated by O2 plasma. Moreover, oxygen plasma treatment improves stability and adhesion of chitosan structured adsorbates onto PP and PE foils. Foils also exhibit over 90% reduction of Staphylococcus aureus and over 77% reduction of Escherichia coli as compared to untreated foils and increase antioxidant activity for over a factor of 10. The present method may be useful in different packaging applications such as food (meat, vegetables, dairy, and bakery products) and pharmaceutical packaging, where such properties of foils are desired.

Beschreibung: Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM) has been known as a software framework to model the brain’s neocortical operation. However, mimicking the brain’s neocortical operation by not software but hardware is more desirable, because the hardware can not only describe the neocortical operation, but can also employ the brain’s architectural advantages. To develop a hybrid circuit of memristor and Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) for realizing HTM’s spatial pooler (SP) by hardware, memristor defects such as stuck-at-faults and variations should be considered. For solving the defect problem, we first show that the boost-factor adjustment can make HTM’s SP defect-tolerant, because the false activation of defective columns are suppressed. Second, we propose a memristor-CMOS hybrid circuit with the boost-factor adjustment to realize this defect-tolerant SP by hardware. The proposed circuit does not rely on the conventional defect-aware mapping scheme, which cannot avoid the false activation of defective columns. For the Modified subset of National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) vectors, the boost-factor adjusted crossbar with defects = 10% shows a rate loss of only ~0.6%, compared to the ideal crossbar with defects = 0%. On the contrary, the defect-aware mapping without the boost-factor adjustment demonstrates a significant rate loss of ~21.0%. The energy overhead of the boost-factor adjustment is only ~0.05% of the programming energy of memristor synapse crossbar.

Beschreibung: The extract of honeycomb waste was studied as a corrosion inhibitor on 304 stainless steel in H2SO4 solutions. The honeycomb waste was obtained from beekeeping at Lawang-Malang, East Java, Indonesia. Electrochemical and scanning electron microscopy methods were used to investigate the performance of the corrosion inhibition process. The inhibition efficiency of the inhibitor (2000 mg/L) reached 97.29% in 0.5 M H2SO4 and decreased with the acid concentration. Kinetic parameters were calculated to explain the effect of acid concentration on the inhibition process. The study on the adsorption behavior of the extracts followed the Frumkin isotherm model. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the 304 stainless steel surface was confirmed by the negative and lower values of Gibbs free energy. The obtained scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images were confirmed by comparing the surface of the specimens with and without inhibitor after corroding for one week. The results indicated that the extract acted as a good inhibitor for 304 stainless steel in acid corrosion.

Beschreibung: The aim of this work is to study the activity of novel TiO2-based photocatalysts doped with either phosphorus or zirconium under a UV-Vis source. A set of mesoporous catalysts was prepared by the direct synthesis: TiO2_A and TiO2_B (titanium oxide synthesized by two different procedures), P-TiO2 and Zr-TiO2 (binary oxides with either nonmetal or metal into the TiO2 framework). Complementary characterizations (N2 physisorption at 77 K, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and (DR)UV-Vis spectroscopy) were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of the prepared catalysts. Then, the photocatalysts were tested for the oxidation of propylene and ethylene under UV-Vis light. As a result, the most promising catalyst for both the propylene and ethylene oxidation reactions was the P-TiO2 (propylene conversion = 27.8% and ethylene conversion = 13%, TOS = 3 h), thus confirming the beneficial effect of P-doping into the TiO2 framework on the photocatalytic activity.

Beschreibung: Soils in tropical croplands are becoming degraded because of soil carbon (C) depletion. Local farmers in South India use a specific management of traditional cultivation, i.e., broadcast seeding. However, for sustainable C management, there is no quantitative data on the CO2 flux under this management. Our objectives were to (1) estimate the annual CO2 flux, and (2) evaluate the effect of traditional cultivation management (seeding rate) on the CO2 flux. Our field experiment was conducted in South India, from 2015 to 2017, including two cultivation periods with four cultivation management treatments (traditional cultivation management plot (T), fixed density plot (FD), no thinning plot (NT), and bare plot (B)). The seeding rate in the FD plot was ca. 50% of the T plot. We applied 1.1 Mg C ha−1 farmyard manure just before the experiment as a C input. We found that broadcasting, thinning, and cultivation increased soil moisture, while the CO2 efflux rate showed no significant difference between treatments throughout the experimental period. This indicates that cultivation management did not affect the CO2 flux. The total CO2 fluxes for two years were estimated at 2.2–2.7 Mg C ha−1. Our results indicate that it is necessary to apply larger or more frequent C inputs to prevent C depletion.

Beschreibung: Service Level Agreements are employed to set availability commitments in cloud services. When a violation occurs as in an outage, cloud providers may be called to compensate customers for the losses incurred. Such compensation may be so large as to erode cloud providers’ profit margins. Insurance may be used to protect cloud providers against such a danger. In this paper, closed formulas are provided through the expected utility paradigm to set the insurance premium under different outage models and QoS metrics (no. of outages, no. of long outages, and unavailability). When the cloud service is paid through a fixed fee, we also provide the maximum unit compensation that a cloud provider can offer so as to meet constraints on its profit loss. The unit compensation is shown to vary approximately as the inverse square of the service fee.

Beschreibung: In this paper, a model for dynamic analysis of array of floating breakwaters is developed and tested. Special attention is given to modeling connections between neighboring elements of the array. A linear three-dimensional floating multi-body formulation is used as a foundation for the presented model. An additional stiffness matrix is derived which introduces the influence of the connections onto motion of the array. The stiffness matrix is used to couple motions in vertical and horizontal planes i.e. the connections are modeled in three-dimensions. The equation of motion is solved in the frequency domain. The newly developed model is tested on an array of three connected breakwaters. The motion and the performance of the breakwater array are investigated under different significant heights and directions of the incoming waves.

Beschreibung: The rye (Secale cereale L.) 5R chromosome contains some elite genes that can be used to improve wheat cultivars. In this study, a set of 5RKu dissection lines was obtained, and 111 new PCR-based and 5RKu-specific markers were developed using the specific length amplified fragment sequencing (SLAF-seq) method. The 111 markers were combined with the 52 5RKu-specific markers previously reported, and 65 S. cereale Lo7 scaffolds were physically mapped to six regions of the 5RKu chromosome using the 5RKu dissection lines. Additionally, the 5RLKu arm carried stripe rust resistance gene(s) and it was located to the region L2, the same region where 22 5RKu-specific markers and 11 S. cereale Lo7 scaffolds were mapped. The stripe rust resistance gene(s) located in the 5RLKu arm might be new one(s) because its source and location are different from the previously reported ones, and it enriches the resistance source of stripe rust for wheat breeding programs. The markers and the S. cereale Lo7 scaffolds that were mapped to the six regions of the 5RKu chromosome can facilitate the utilization of elite genes on the 5R chromosome in the improvement of wheat cultivars.

Beschreibung: In the past few years, unmanned aerial systems (UAS) have achieved great popularity for civil uses. One of the present main uses of these devices is low-cost aerial photogrammetry, being especially useful in coastal environments. In this work, a high-resolution 3D model of a beach section in Guardamar del Segura (Spain) has been produced by employing a low maximum takeoff mass (MTOM) UAS, in combination with the use of structure-from-motion (SfM) techniques. An unprecedented extensive global navigation satellite system (GNSS) survey was simultaneously carried out to statistically validate the model by employing 1238 control points for that purpose. The results show good accuracy, obtaining a vertical root mean square error (RMSE) mean value of 0.121 m and a high point density, close to 30 pt/m2, with similar or even higher quality than most coastal surveys performed with classical techniques. UAS technology permits the acquisition of topographic data with low time-consuming surveys at a high temporal frequency. Coastal managers can implement this methodology into their workflow to study the evolution of complex, highly anthropized dune-beach systems such as the one presented in this study, obtaining more accurate surveys at lower costs.

Beschreibung: Assessing and prescribing fertilizer use is critical to profitable and sustainable coffee production, and this is becoming a priority concern for the Robusta coffee industry. In this study, annual survey data of 798 farms across selected Robusta coffee-producing provinces in Vietnam and Indonesia between 2008 and 2017 were used to comparatively assess the fertilizer management strategies in these countries. Specifically, we aimed to characterize fertilizer use patterns in the key coffee-growing provinces and discuss the potential for improving nutrient management practices. Four types of chemical (NPK, super phosphate, potassium chloride and urea) and two of natural (compost and lime) fertilizers were routinely used in Vietnam. In Indonesia, NPK and urea were supplemented only with compost. Farmers in Vietnam applied unbalanced quantities of chemical fertilizers (i.e., higher rates than recommended) and at a constant rate between years whereas Indonesian farmers applied well below the recommended rates because of poor accessibility and financial support. The overuse of chemical fertilizers in Vietnam threatens the sustainability of Robusta coffee farming. Nevertheless, there is a potential for improvement in both countries in terms of nutrient management and sustainability of Robusta coffee production by adopting the best local fertilizer management practices.

Beschreibung: Term translation quality in machine translation (MT), which is usually measured by domain experts, is a time-consuming and expensive task. In fact, this is unimaginable in an industrial setting where customised MT systems often need to be updated for many reasons (e.g., availability of new training data, leading MT techniques). To the best of our knowledge, as of yet, there is no publicly-available solution to evaluate terminology translation in MT automatically. Hence, there is a genuine need to have a faster and less-expensive solution to this problem, which could help end-users to identify term translation problems in MT instantly. This study presents a faster and less expensive strategy for evaluating terminology translation in MT. High correlations of our evaluation results with human judgements demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution. The paper also introduces a classification framework, TermCat, that can automatically classify term translation-related errors and expose specific problems in relation to terminology translation in MT. We carried out our experiments with a low resource language pair, English–Hindi, and found that our classifier, whose accuracy varies across the translation directions, error classes, the morphological nature of the languages, and MT models, generally performs competently in the terminology translation classification task.

Beschreibung: Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is one of the most important forage grass species in temperate regions of the world, but it is prone to having poor persistence due to the incidence of abiotic and biotic stresses. This creates a challenge for livestock producers to use their agricultural lands more productively and intensively within sustainable limits. Breeding perennial ryegrass cultivars that are both productive and persistent is a target of forage breeding programs and will allow farmers to select appropriate cultivars to deliver the highest profitability over the lifetime of a sward. Conventional methods for the estimation of pasture persistence depend on manual ground cover estimation or counting the number of surviving plants or tillers in a given area. Those methods are subjective, time-consuming and/or labour intensive. This study aimed to develop a phenomic method to evaluate the persistence of perennial ryegrass cultivars in field plots. Data acquisition was conducted three years after sowing to estimate the persistence of perennial ryegrass using high-resolution aerial-based multispectral and ground-based red, green and blue(RGB) sensors, and subsequent image analysis. There was a strong positive relationship between manual ground cover and sensor-based ground cover estimates (p 〈 0.001). Although the manual plant count was positively correlated with sensor-based ground cover (p 〈 0.001) intra-plot plant size variation influenced the strength of this relationship. We conclude that object-based ground cover estimation is most suitable for use in large-scale breeding programs due to its higher accuracy, efficiency and repeatability. With further development, this technique could be used to assess temporal changes of perennial ryegrass persistence in experimental studies and on a farm scale.

Beschreibung: Automatic controls refer to the application of control theory to regulate systems or processes without human intervention, and the notion is often usefully applied to space applications. A key part of controlling flexible space robotics is the control-structures interaction of a light, flexible structure whose first resonant modes lie within the bandwidth of the controller. In this instance, the designed-control excites the problematic resonances of the highly flexible structure. This manuscript reveals a novel compensator capable of minimum-time performance of an in-plane maneuver with zero residual vibration (ZV) and zero residual vibration-derivative (ZVD) at the end of the maneuver. The novel compensator has a whiplash nature of first commanding maneuver states in the opposite direction of the desired end state. For a flexible spacecraft simulator (FSS) free-floating planar robotic arm, this paper will first derive the model of the flexible system in detail from first principles. Hamilton’s principle is augmented with the adjoint equation to produce the Euler–Lagrange equation which is manipulated to prove equivalence with Newton’s law. Extensive efforts are expended modeling the free–free vibration equations of the flexible system, and this extensive modeling yields an unexpected control profile—a whiplash compensator. Equations of motion are derived using both the Euler–Lagrange method and Newton’s law as validation. Variables are then scaled for efficient computation. Next, general purposed pseudospectral optimization software is used to seek an optimal control, proceeding afterwards to validate optimality via six theoretical optimization necessary conditions: (1) Hamiltonian minimization condition; (2) adjoint equations; (3) terminal transversality condition; (4) Hamiltonian final value condition; (5) Hamiltonian evolution equation; and lastly (6) Bellman’s principle. The results are novel and unique in that they initially command full control in the opposite direction from the desired end state, while no such results are seen using classical control methods including classical methods augmented with structural filters typically employed for controlling highly flexible multi-body systems. The manuscript also opens an interesting question of what to declare when the six optimality necessary conditions are not necessarily in agreement (we choose here not to declare finding the optimal control, instead calling it suboptimal).

Beschreibung: High input costs combined with multiple management and material inputs have threatened cotton productivity. We hypothesize that this problem can be addressed by a single fertilization at flowering with late sowing in a moderately populated plant stand. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the cotton biomass accumulation, phosphorus dynamics, and fiber quality under three planting densities (low, 3 × 104; moderate, 6 × 104; and dense, 9 × 104 ha−1) and two cultivars (Zhongmian-16 and J-4B). High planting density had 6.2 and 12.6% larger stems and fruiting nodes m−2, while low density produced a 37.5 and 59.4% maximum height node ratio. Moderate density produced 26.4–15.5%, 24.7–12.6%, and 10.5–13.6% higher biomass accumulation rate at the peak bloom, boll set, and plant removal stages over low and high density in both years, respectively. J-4B produced a higher reproductive organs biomass yield when compared with Zhongmian-16 in both years. This higher biomass formation was due to both the higher average (0.8 VT kg·ha−1·d−1) and maximum (1.0 VM kg·ha−1·d−1) reproductive organ phosphorus uptake, respectively. Plants with low density had 5.3–18.5%, 9.5–15%, and 7.8–12.8% greater length, strength, and micronaire values over moderate and dense plants, respectively. Conclusively, moderate density with J-4B is a promising option for improved biomass, phosphorus acquisition, and fiber quality under a short season.

Beschreibung: Three rust diseases namely; stem rust caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt), leaf rust caused by Puccinia triticina (Pt), and stripe rust caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), are the most common fungal diseases of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and cause significant yield losses worldwide including Australia. Recently characterized stripe rust resistance genes Yr51 and Yr57 are effective against pre- and post-2002 Pst pathotypes in Australia. Similarly, stem rust resistance genes Sr22, Sr26, and Sr50 are effective against the Pgt pathotype TTKSK (Ug99) and its derivatives in addition to commercially important Australian pathotypes. Effectiveness of these genes make them good candidates for combining with known pleiotropic adult plant resistance (PAPR) genes to achieve durable resistance against three rust pathogens. This study was planned to transfer rust resistance genes Yr51, Yr57, Sr22, Sr26, and Sr50 into two Australian (Gladius and Livingston) and two Indian (PBW550 and DBW17) wheat cultivars through marker assisted selection (MAS). These cultivars also carry other rust resistance genes: Gladius carries Lr37/Yr17/Sr38 and Sr24/Lr24; Livingston carries Lr34/Yr18/Sr57, Lr37/Yr17/Sr38, and Sr2; PBW550 and DBW17 carry Lr34/Yr18/Sr57 and Lr26/Yr9/Sr31. Donor sources of Yr51 (AUS91456), Yr57 (AUS91463), Sr22 (Sr22/3*K441), Sr26 (Sr26 WA1), and Sr50 (Dra-1/Chinese Spring ph1b/2/3* Gabo) were crossed with each of the recurrent parents to produce backcross progenies. Markers linked to Yr51 (sun104), Yr57 (gwm389 and BS00062676), Sr22 (cssu22), Sr26 (Sr26#43), and Sr50 (Sr50-5p-F3, R2) were used for their MAS and markers csLV34 (Lr34/Yr18/Sr57), VENTRIUP-LN2 (Lr37/Yr17/Sr38), Sr24#12 (Sr24/Lr24), and csSr2 (Sr2) were used to select genes present in recurrent parents. Progenies of selected individuals were grown and selected under field conditions for plant type and adult plant rust responses. Final selections were genotyped with the relevant markers. Backcross derivatives of these genes were distributed to breeding companies for use as resistance donors.

Beschreibung: In this work, a biomedical Ti-6Al-4V (TC4)/Zn composite with gradient microstructures was successfully prepared by friction stir processing (FSP). The microstructures and mechanical properties of the composite were systematically studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), atom probe tomography (APT), and microhardness test. The results show that TC4/Zn composite can be successfully prepared, and gradient microstructures varying from coarse grain to nanocrystalline is formed from the bottom to the upper surface. During FSP, adding Zn can accelerate the growth of β phase region, and the grain size significantly increases with the increasing rotation rate. The grain combination is the main mechanism for grain growth of β phase region. The deformation mechanisms gradually change from dislocation accumulations and rearrangement to dynamic recrystallization from the bottom to the upper surface (1.5 mm–150 μm from the upper surface). The composite exhibits slightly higher microhardness compared with the matrix. This paper provides a new method to obtain a TC4/Zn composite with gradient surface microstructures for potential applications in the biomedical field.

Beschreibung: Aeronautical stiffened panels composed of thin shells and beams are prone to deformation or buckling due to the combined loading, functional boundary conditions and interface forces between joined parts in the assembly processes. In this paper, a mechanical prediction model of the multi-component panel is presented to investigate the deformation propagation, which has a significant effect on the fatigue life of built-up structures. Governing equations of Kirchhoff–Love shell are established, of which displacement expressions are transformed into Fourier series expansions of several introduced potential functions by applying the Galerkin approach. This paper presents an intermediate quantity, concentrated force at the joining interface, to describe mechanical interactions between the coupled components. Based on the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, unknown intermediate quantity is calculated by solving a 3D stringer deformation equation with static boundary conditions specified on joining points. Compared with the finite element simulation and integrated model, the proposed method can substantially reduce grid number without jeopardizing the prediction accuracy. Practical experiment of the aircraft panel assembly is also performed to obtain the measured data. Maximum deviation between the experimental and predicted clearance values is 0.193 mm, which is enough to meet the requirement for predicting dimensional variations of the aircraft panel assembly.

Beschreibung: A new mechanism of dynamic phase transformations of α2 ↔ γ in an isothermally forged γ-TiAl-based alloy that occur simultaneously during a short-term exposure at 1000 °C is identified in this study. In the heating process, γ phase significantly decreases through a phase transformation of γ → α2, while new γ lamellae are precipitated in the interior of equiaxed grains of α2 phase through a phase transformation of α2 → γ. The reasons for the presence of these two inverse phase transformations α2 ↔ γ occurring simultaneously are discussed.

Beschreibung: When designing the composition and structure of a composite material intended for tribological cooperation, many external and structural factors must be considered. The aim of this research was to compare the tribological properties (wear resistance and friction coefficient) of AlSi7Mg1Sr0.03/SiCp and AlSi7Mg1Sr0.03/GCsf single-reinforced composite layers with AlSi7Mg1Sr0.03/SiCp + GCsf hybrid composite layer formed in sleeves via vertical centrifugal casting. Profilometry enabled quantitative and qualitative analyses to be performed on the wear traces formed on investigated surfaces. The results show that a hybrid composite layer containing spherical glassy carbon particles had a significantly lower and more stable coefficient of friction (μ) and a higher wear resistance compared with single composite layers. The obtained effect was related to the mechanism of vitreous carbon consumption, which was crushed during operation, and then introduced between the cooperating friction surfaces. In this way, it acted as a solid lubricant, which stabilized the coefficient of friction and reduced the wear process.

Beschreibung: This study presents a fabrication route for an electrically conductive ZrO2–TiN ceramic nanocomposite with a nanoscale TiN phase occupying ≤30 vol% to improve the mechanical reinforcement of the zirconia matrix, and at the same time provide electrical conductivity to facilitate electro-discharge machining (EDM). The TiN nanoparticles were incorporated into a 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) powder, either by admixing a TiN nanopowder (MCP) or by using in-situ synthesis (ISS) via the forced hydrolysis of a titanyl sulphate aqueous solution and the direct nitriding of as-synthesized titania nanoparticles, followed by consolidation and rapid sintering in a spark plasma sintering (SPS) system. The initial phase composition and crystal structure of the as-synthesized powders and the sintered samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray difraction (XRD). The influence of the different fabrication routes on the microstructural evolution, electrical and mechanical properties, and affinity for EDM were assessed using TEM, focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM, Vickers indentation, electrical conductivity measurements, and profilometry. The MCP synthesis route resulted in finer microstructures that are less prone to microstructural inhomogeneities; however, using the ISS route, it was possible to fabricate electrically conductive Y-TZP nanocomposites containing only 15 vol% of the TiN nanoparticulate phase. Both synthesis routes resulted in an increase of the fracture toughness with an increase of the TiN phase due to the nanoparticulate TiN reinforcement of the Y-TZP ceramic matrix via crack-bridging toughening mechanisms. As both synthesis routes yielded Y-TZP nanocomposites capable of successful EDM machining at a TiN content of ≥30 vol% for the MCP and ≥ 15 vol% TiN for the ISS, a possible mechanism was developed based on the microstructure evolution and grain growth.

Beschreibung: Due to the rapid growth of the electric power system, the silicone rubber composite insulator is so widely employed around the world. However, the aging damage and decommission of it inevitably generates plenty of waste silicone rubber. It takes up large amounts of land for non-degradation, which is becoming a serious environmental issue. In this paper, the effort has been made to reuse the silicone rubber of composite insulator by peeling, breaking and adding it into the cement mortar to partly replace river sand by 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30% in volume. Moreover, the surface modification of silicone rubber particles with H2O2 and KOH is explored to improve hydrophilicity. The mechanical strength of silicone rubber mortar and modified silicone rubber mortar are measured in detail, and the effects of particle size, content and modification of silicone rubber on the properties of mortar are investigated. This study shows that at least a 5% addition of silicone rubber can reduce the strengths, while the 15% addition is obviously favorable for increasing the toughness. Furthermore, the mortar strength gets promoted due to the surface modification. Lastly, the superior thermal insulation and noise reduction of the mortar are obtained as the addition of silicone rubber particles, and an equation between dry apparent density and thermal conductivity of mortar has been developed.

Beschreibung: Background: The systematic review was designed to answer the following focused question: Are enamel matrix derivatives able to improve the quantity of keratinized tissue (KT) around natural dentition in patients with recessions defects after their treatment with periodontal plastic procedures? Methods: Only Randomized Clinical Trials (RCT) in English language evaluating root coverage procedures in combination with enamel matrix derivatives (commercially known as Emdogain®—EMD), with at least 10 subjects and a minimum duration of six months, were included. The search was applied to PUBMED and SCOPUS and it consists of a combination of MeSH terms and free text words (from January 2000 to June 2019). Risk of bias in individual studies and across studies was also evaluated. Results: After the full text analysis and the exclusion of further 18 articles, 12 articles were finally included. In total 639 recessions were treated (334 tests and 305 control). The recessions defects were classified according to the classification of Miller (Class I, II, III, IV). Only one trial included Miller Class III recessions (7 in total). Enamel matrix derivatives were applied in conjunction with Coronally Advanced Flap (CAF), Coronally Advanced Flap + Sub Epithelial Connective Tissue Graft (CAF + CTG), Semilunar Flap (SF). For the group CAF vs CAF + EMD the mean difference between the keratinized tissue gain in the two procedures was 0.40 mm (95% Confindence Interval Lower/Upper: 0.014–0.81) (p 〈 0.058); for the comparison CAF + CTG + EMD vs. CAF + CTG the mean difference between the two groups resulted in −0.06 mm (95% Confindence Interval Lower Upper −0.45 to 0.33) (p = 0.7603). Discussion: Randomized clinical trials included medium-low quality evidence. The application of Enamel Matrix Derivatives to surgical procedures aimed to cover gingival recessions does not add robust clinical benefit to conventional plastic procedure alone.

Beschreibung: Graphene has been considered an ideal nanoscale reinforced phase for preparing high-performance composites, but the poor compatibility and weak interfacial interaction with the matrix have limited its application. Here a highly effective and environmentally friendly method for the functionalization of graphene is proposed through an interaction between as-exfoliated graphene and (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (KH550), in which 1-butylsulfonate-3-methylimidazolium bisulfate (BSO3HMIm)(HSO4) ionic-liquids-modified graphene was prepared via an electrochemical exfoliation of graphite in (BSO3HMIm)(HSO4) solution, then (BSO3HMIm)(HSO4)-modified graphene as a precursor was reacted with amine groups of KH550 for obtaining (BSO3HMIm)(HSO4)/KH550-functionalized graphene. The final products as filler into carboxylated acrylonitrile‒butadiene rubber (XNBR) improve the dynamic mechanical properties. The improvement in the dynamic mechanical properties of the nanocomposite mainly depends on high interfacial interaction and graphene’s performance characteristics, as well as a good dispersion between functionalized graphene and the XNBR matrix.

Beschreibung: Recently, the application of nano-cutting fluids has gained much attention in the machining of nickel-based super alloys due their good lubricating/cooling properties including thermal conductivity, viscosity, and tribological characteristics. In this study, a set of turning experiments on new nickel-based alloy i.e., Inconel-800 alloy, was performed to explore the characteristics of different nano-cutting fluids (aluminum oxide (Al2O3), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and graphite) under minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) conditions. The performance of each nano-cutting fluid was deliberated in terms of machining characteristics such as surface roughness, cutting forces, and tool wear. Further, the data generated through experiments were statistically examined through Box Cox transformation, normal probability plots, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests. Then, an in-depth analysis of each process parameter was conducted through line plots and the results were compared with the existing literature. In the end, the composite desirability approach (CDA) was successfully implemented to determine the ideal machining parameters under different nano-cutting cooling conditions. The results demonstrate that the MoS2 and graphite-based nanofluids give promising results at high cutting speed values, but the overall performance of graphite-based nanofluids is better in terms of good lubrication and cooling properties. It is worth mentioning that the presence of small quantities of graphite in vegetable oil significantly improves the machining characteristics of Inconel-800 alloy as compared with the two other nanofluids.

Beschreibung: This paper shows the acoustic emission (AE) analysis recorded during the loading process of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to bidirectional seismic loadings. Two waffle plates (bidirectional) supported by isolated square columns were tested on a shaking table with a progressive and increasing ground acceleration until the final collapse. Each specimen was subjected to a different loading history. A relevant delay in the beginning of the significant AE energy is observed as the peak value of the ground acceleration increases. Based on this result, a new AE temporal damage index (TDI), defined as the time difference between the onset of the significant AE activity and the onset of the loading that causes this AE activity, is proposed and validated by comparing it with the plastic strain energy released by the concrete, typically used as a reliable damage level indicator. Good agreement was observed for both specimens and seismic inputs.

Beschreibung: Wet spinning of polyacrylonitrile/carbon nanotubes (PAN/CNT) composite fibers was studied and the effect of spinning conditions on structure and properties of as-spun fibers influenced by the presence of CNTs investigated. Unlike PAN fibers, shear force had a larger effect on crystalline structure and physical and mechanical properties of PAN/CNT composite fibers compared to the elongational force inside a coagulation bath. Under shear force CNTs induced nucleation of new crystals, whereas under elongational force nucleation of new crystals were hindered but the already formed crystals grew bigger. To our knowledge, this key effect has not been reported elsewhere. At different shear rates, strength, Young’s modulus and strain at break of PAN/CNT as-spun fibers were improved up to 20% compared to PAN fibers. Application of jet stretch had less influence on physical and mechanical properties of PAN/CNT fibers compared to PAN fibers. However, the improvement of interphase between polymer chains and CNTs as a result of chain orientation may have contributed to enhancement of Young’s modulus of jet stretched composite fibers.

Beschreibung: A sophisticated understanding of phase transformations and microstructure evolution is crucial in mechanical property optimization for the newly developed low-cost Ti-35421 (Ti-3Al-5Mo-4Cr-2Zr-1Fe wt.%) titanium alloy. The phase transformations in dual-phase Ti-35421 were studied by experiments and thermo-kinetic modeling. The phase transformation reactions and temperature ranges were determined as β→αlamellar [410–660 °C], αlamellar→β [660–740 °C], αlath→β [740–825 °C]. The Gibbs-Thomson effect and multicomponent diffusivities were proven to be responsible for the distinguishing behaviors of growth and dissolution between two α phases. The aging temperature of 540 °C was optimized based on calculations. It introduced a bimodal microstructure containing stubby α lamellae and β matrix. The mechanical properties of bimodal Ti-35421 were tested and compared with baseline alloy Ti-B19 and other near-β titanium alloys. The 540 °C aged alloy exhibits an optimal combination of mechanical properties with tensile strength of 1313 MPa, yield strength of 1240 MPa, elongation of 8.62%, and fracture toughness of 75.8 MPa·m1/2. The bimodal Ti-35421 shows comparable performance to Ti-B19 but has lower cost in raw materials and processing. The results also demonstrate that thermo-kinetic modeling can effectively be utilized in tailoring microstructure and enhancing mechanical properties.

Beschreibung: The industrial application of laser materials processing methods is still far ahead of research into the physical phenomena occurring during these processes. In particular, the effect of high temperatures on the energy coupling of laser irradiation of metals is poorly understood. However, most processes in laser materials treatment involve temperatures above the melting point or even cause evaporation. This study therefore evaluates the effect of high temperatures on the energy coupling efficiency of stainless steel experimentally for three typical laser wavelengths (515 nm, 1.07 µm, 10.6 µm). As a result, it is shown that the effect of temperature on the energy coupling efficiency depends on the wavelength. In this context the relevance of the X-point phenomenon known from the emissivity theory could be demonstrated for laser material processing. Further, the effect of a process-induced surface oxidation is analyzed. At temperatures above 650 °C the energy coupling efficiency dramatically increases to around 65% at melting point and stays at this high level even in the liquid phase.

Beschreibung: In order to improve the performance of the investment casting shell, ceramic and nylon fiber was added to the silica sol slurry to study the effect of ceramic and nylon fiber on the liquidity of the silica sol slurry and the bending strength of the investment casting shell. Meanwhile, the fracture surface of shell sample was observed by SEM. The experiment results indicate that the movement viscosity of slurry increases with ceramic and nylon fiber content, increasing from 0 to 0.75 wt.%. The movement viscosity of ceramic fiber composite slurry is higher than nylon fiber composite slurry. The wet and high strength of shell firstly increases then decreases, with an increase of ceramic and nylon fiber content. When the ceramic and nylon fibers’ contents are 0.6 wt.%, the maximum wet strengths are 3.56 MPa and 3.84 Mpa respectively, increasing by approximately 38% and 43%. Moreover, the high strength of shell achieves its highest value, 5.08 Mpa, when the ceramic fiber content is 0.6 wt.%; however, when the nylon fiber content was more than 0.3%, the high strength of the nylon fiber reinforced shell was decreased sharply. Therefore, an addition of ceramic and nylon fiber to silica sol slurry distinctly influences the wet and high strength of investment casting shell.

Beschreibung: Natural aeolian sand has the characteristics of low cohesion and poor water stability. In order to improve its crack resistance properties in the process of freeze-thaw cycles, P.O 42.5 ordinary Portland cement was added to form a mixture called cement improved aeolian sand (CIAS). SEM was used to analyze the microscopic micro-structure of CIAS at different times (7 days and 28 days). The mechanical properties of CIAS samples affected by freeze-thaw cycles were tested in a triaxial instrument, and gray-scale images of the three-phase distribution in the CIAS after freeze-thaw cycling were obtained by computed tomography (CT) scanning technology. The pore characteristic parameters (pore area, fractal dimension, and crack length) were studied by digital image process technique. Based on classical Griffith fracture theory, the development of the crack length and crack width with increasing freeze-thaw cycles is determined. Assuming that the pore area subordinates to the Weibull distribution, the parameters of the Weibull distribution, the damage evolution defined by the elastic modulus attenuation, and the pore area development of CIAS were determined. Research shows the cohesion decreases and internal friction angle increases with increasing cycle numbers. Three development patterns are observed: crack growth, crack closure, and crack merging, and the three patterns interact during freeze-thaw cycling. Furthermore, the fractal dimension of the pore edge fluctuates with the increasing number of freeze-thaw cycles. This work provides a theoretical basis for the application of aeolian sand and develops a method for disaster prevention in applications of freeze-thaw cycling.

Beschreibung: In a conventional electrically conductive adhesive (ECA) preparation process, typical ECAs are made by adding an appropriate amount of electrically conductive fillers, such as silver, into a polymer matrix, such as epoxy resin, to form a uniformly dispersed mixture by mixing and stirring operations. However, during the preparation process, secondary pollution and mass loss are caused by the vigorous mixture process. At the same time, the stirring operation introduces many small and stable bubbles, which affect the electrical conductivity of the ECAs. In light of these problems with the conventional preparation of ECAs, we developed a novel ECA preparation method that employs a powder spraying process: silver flakes are sprayed into the epoxy resin with a certain mass fraction to form formulated pastes. The as-prepared ECAs exhibited excellent properties compared with those prepared by the conventional process. This proves that the powder spraying process is feasible and superior to the conventional process.

Beschreibung: Relying on nanoindentation technology, we investigated the elastic-to-plastic transition via first pop-in event and estimated the corresponding shear stress for incipient plasticity, i.e., yielding in the three typical orientations, i.e., X-112°, Y-36°, and Y-42° planes. The occurrence of incipient plasticity exhibited a stochastic distribution in a wide range for the three orientations. Accordingly, the obtained values of yield stress were uniform and scattered in the range from about 4 to 7 GPa for LiTaO3 single crystal. The orientation effect on yield stress at the nano-scale was revealed to be insignificant in LiTaO3 single crystal. The yield stresses were 5.44 ± 0.41, 5.74 ± 0.59, and 5.34 ± 0.525 GPa for the X-112°, Y-36°, and Y-42° planes, respectively. The activation volumes of dislocation nucleation were computed based on the cumulative distribution of yield stress, which were 12 Å3, 8 Å3, and 9 Å3 for the X-112°, Y-36°, and Y-42° planes. The results indicated that point-like defects could be the source of plastic initiation on the surface of LiTaO3 single crystal.

Beschreibung: This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that heat-bonding with a liner positively affects the bond strength and fracture resistance of an implant-supported glass–ceramic crown bonded to a zirconia abutment produced by a computer-aided design/computer-aided milling (CAD/CAM) procedure. Lithium disilicate-reinforced Amber Mill-Q glass ceramic blocks were bonded to 3 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) blocks by heat-bonding with a liner or cementation with a dual-cure self-adhesive resin cement for a microtensile bond strength test. CAD/CAM implant-supported glass ceramic crowns were produced using Amber Mill-Q blocks and bonded to a milled 3Y-TZP zirconia abutments by heat-bonding or cementation for a fracture test. A statistical analysis was conducted to investigate the significant differences between the experimental results. The mode of failure was analyzed using high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy. Chemical bonding was identified at the interface between the zirconia ceramic and liner. The mean tensile bond strength of the liner-bonded group was significantly higher than that of the cement-bonded group. The initial chipping strength of the liner-bonded group was significantly higher than that of the cement-bonded group, although no statistically significant difference was found for the fracture strength. The mode of failure was mixed with cohesive fracture through the liner, whereas the cement-bonded group demonstrated adhesive failure at the interface of bonding.

Beschreibung: Using as thermal reflection coating fillers is a significant recycle method for the largely available by-product of shell powders in aquaculture. However, the organics in the shell powder harm its reflection ability. To enhance the thermal reflection performance of the shell powder filled coatings, in this work, the calcined shell powders were used to fill coatings, and the performance of the coatings filled by the calcined shell powders under different temperatures was comparably investigated. Experimental results indicate that after calcination at 400 °C, the organics in the shell powders are removed, whereas the crystal structure of the calcium carbonate is maintained and its particles are refined, leading to an increase in its reflectance. Calcination at temperatures higher than 400 °C deteriorates the properties of the shell powder, due to the sintering of the calcium carbonate particles. The coatings filled by shell powder calcinated at 400 °C deliver the best cooling effect and comparable scouring resistance.

Beschreibung: Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are one of the most prominent agents used in theranostic applications, with MRI imaging the main application assessed. The biomolecular interface formed on the surface of a nanoparticle in a biological medium determines its behaviour in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we have compared the formation of the protein corona on highly monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles with two different coatings, dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), and after conjugation, with a bifunctional polyethylene glycol (PEG)-derived molecule (2000 Da) in the presence of Wistar rat plasma. The protein fingerprints around the nanoparticles were analysed in an extensive proteomic study. The results presented in this work indicate that the composition of the protein corona is very difficult to predict. Proteins from different functional categories—cell components, lipoproteins, complement, coagulation, immunoglobulins, enzymes and transport proteins—were identified in all samples with very small variability. Although both types of nanoparticles have similar amounts of bonded proteins, very slight differences in the composition of the corona might explain the variation observed in the uptake and biotransformation of these nanoparticles in Caco-2 and RAW 264.7 cells. Cytotoxicity was also studied using a standard 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay. Controlling nanoparticles’ reactivity to the biological environment by deciding on its surface functionalization may suggest new routes in the control of the biodistribution, biodegradation and clearance of multifunctional nanomedicines.

Beschreibung: The thin-walled airfoil areas of as-cast single-crystalline turbine blades made of CMSX-4 superalloy were studied. The blades were produced by the industrial Bridgman technique at withdrawal rates of 2, 3 and 4 mm/min. The angle between the [001] crystallographic direction and blade axis, related to the primary orientation, was defined by the Ω-scan X-ray diffraction method at points on the camber line located near the tip of an airfoil and at points of a line located in parallel and near the trailing edge. Additionally, primary crystal orientation was determined by Laue diffraction at the selected points of an airfoil. The influence of mould wall inclination on the primary crystal orientation of the thin-walled areas is discussed. The effect of change in the [001] crystallographic direction, named as “force directing”, was considered with regard to the arrangement of primary dendrite arms in relation to the trailing edge and the camber line. It was stated that when the distance between the mould walls is less than the critical value of about 1.5 mm the “force directing” increases as the distance between the walls of the mould decreases. The effect may be controlled by selecting an appropriate secondary orientation using a seed crystal in the blade production process. The model of dendrite interaction with the mould walls, including bending and “deflection”, was proposed.

Beschreibung: The objective of the present investigation is to determine the effects of neutral, anionic, and cationic liposomes loaded with doxorubicin with thin-lipid-film-hydration method on the cellular viability and osteogenesis of stem cell spheroids. Spheroid formation and morphology of the three-dimensional spheroid were noted with an inverted microscope. Quantitative cellular viability was assessed using a commercially available kit. Osteogenic potential was evaluated by applying alkaline phosphatase activity and anthraquinone dye of Alizarin Red S. Western blot analysis was performed using collagen I expression. Spheroids were formed in each silicon elastomer-based concave microwell on Day 1. Noticeable changes of the spheroid were seen with a higher concentration of doxorubicin, especially in the cationic liposome group at Days 5 and 7. We found that the application of doxorubicin for 5 days significantly reduced the cellular viability. A higher concentration of doxorubicin produced a significant decrease in alkaline phosphatase activity. Alizarin Red S staining showed that extracellular calcium deposits were evenly noted in each group. An increase of calcium deposits was noted on Day 14 when compared to Day 7. The morphology of the groups with higher concentrations of doxorubicin showed to be more dispersed. We noticed that doxorubicin-loaded cationic liposomes resulted in the highest uptake of the examined cell spheroids and that doxorubicin-loaded liposomes affected the osteogenic differentiation. The implication of this study is that the type of liposome should be selected based on the purpose of the application.

Beschreibung: From the viewpoint of mechanics, weld cracking tends to occur if the induced tensile stress surpasses a certain value for the particular materials and the welding processes. Welding residual stresses (WRS) can be profoundly affected by the restraint conditions of the welded structures. For estimating the tendency of weld cracking, the small-scale H-type slit joints have been widely used for cracking tests. However, it is still hard to decide whether the real large-scale component can also be welded without cracking even though the tested weld cracking specimens on the laboratory scale can be welded without cracking. In this study, the intensity of restraint which quantitatively indicates how much a joint is restrained is used. The influence of restraint condition (intensity of restraint) on WRS is systematically investigated using both the numerical simulation and the experimental method. The achievement obtained in the current work is very beneficial to design effective H-type self-restrained cracking test specimens for evaluating the sensitivity of the material and the welding procedures for weld cracking in the real large-scale components.

Beschreibung: Despite the great advances that the tissue engineering field has experienced over the last two decades, the amount of in vitro engineered tissues that have reached a stage of clinical trial is limited. While many challenges are still to be overcome, the lack of vascularization represents a major milestone if tissues bigger than approximately 200 µm are to be transplanted. Cell survival and homeostasis is to a large extent conditioned by the oxygen and nutrient transport (as well as waste removal) by blood vessels on their proximity and spontaneous vascularization in vivo is a relatively slow process, leading all together to necrosis of implanted tissues. Thus, in vitro vascularization appears to be a requirement for the advancement of the field. One of the main approaches to this end is the formation of vascular templates that will develop in vitro together with the targeted engineered tissue. Bioprinting, a fast and reliable method for the deposition of cells and materials on a precise manner, appears as an excellent fabrication technique. In this review, we provide a comprehensive background to the fields of vascularization and bioprinting, providing details on the current strategies, cell sources, materials and outcomes of these studies.

Beschreibung: We compared the influence of the polymerization mechanism onto the physical characteristics of thermoresponsive hydrogels. The Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogels were successfully synthesized using reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) and free radical polymerization (FRP). The gels were prepared while using different crosslinker feed and monomer concentration. The swelling, dye release, and hydrolytic stability of the gels were investigated in water, or in representative komostrope and chaotrope salt solutions at room temperature and at 37 °C. It was found that the swelling ratio (SR) of the RAFT gels was significantly higher than that of the FRP gels; however, an increased crosslinking density resulted in a decrease of the SR of the RAFT gels as compared to the corresponding gels that are made by FRP, which indicates the limitation of the cross-linking efficiency that is attained in RAFT polymerization. Additionally, an increased monomer concentration decreased the SR of the RAFT gels, whereas a similar SR was observed for the FRP gels. However, the SR of both RAFT and FRP gels in NaSCN and Na2SO4 solutions were similar. Finally, the rate of dye release was significantly slower from the RAFT gels than the FRP gels and the hydrolytic stability of the RAFT gels was lower than that of FRP gels in water, but maintained similar stability in Na2SO4 and NaSCN solutions.

Beschreibung: Underwater laser beam welding (ULBW) with filler wire was applied to Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Process parameters including the back shielding gas flow rate (BSGFR) (the amount of protective gas flowing over the back of the workpiece per unit time), focal position, and laser power were investigated to obtain a high-quality butt joint. The results showed that the increase of BSGFR could obtain the slighter oxidation level and refiner crystal grain in the welded metals. Whereas the back shielding gas at a flow rate of 35 L/min resulting in pores in the welded metals. With the increasing of the heat input, the welded metals went through three stages, i.e., not full penetration, crystal grain refinement, and coarseness. Crystal grain refinement could improve the mechanical properties, however, not full penetration and pores led to the decline in mechanical properties. Under optimal process parameters, the microstructure in the fusion zones of the underwater and in-air weld metals was acicular martensite. The near the fusion zone of the underwater and in-air weld metals consisted of the α + α′ phase, but almost without the α′ phase in the near base metal zone. The tensile strength and impact toughness of the underwater welded joints were 852.81 MPa and 39.07 J/cm2, respectively, which approached to those of the in-air welded joints (861.32 MPa and 38.99 J/cm2).

Beschreibung: Nanosilica particles are extracted from waste water containing a hexafluorosilicic acid discharged from Vietnamese fertilizer plants as an effective way not only to reduce waste water pollution but also to enhance the value of their waste water. Amorphous nanosilica particles are produced with diameters ranging from 40 to 60 nm and then adopted as a reinforcing additive for natural rubber (NR) composites. Morphological, mechanical, rheological, and thermal behaviors of the nanosilica-added NR composites are examined. Especially, mechanical behaviors of nanosilica-filled NR composites reach the optimum with 3 phr of nanosilica, at which its tensile strength, hardness, and decomposition temperature are improved by 20.6%, 7.1%, and 2.5%, respectively, compared with the pristine vulcanized NR. The improved mechanical properties can be explained by the tensile fractured surface morphology, which shows that the silica-filled NR is rougher than the pristine natural rubber sample.

Beschreibung: There has recently been an increased use of anti-freezing agents that are primarily composed of salt- and alkali-free calcium nitrite (Ca(NO2)2) and calcium nitrate (Ca(NO3)2) to promote the hydration reaction of concrete in cold weather concreting. Nitrite–nitrate based accelerators accelerate the hydration of C3A and C3S in cement more quickly when their quantities are increased, thereby boosting the concrete’s early strength and effectively preventing early frost damage. However, the connection between the hydrate formation behavior and the strength development characteristic over time has yet to be clearly identified. Therefore, in this study, a wide range of physicochemical reviews were carried out to clarify the relationship between the hydrate formation behavior and the strength development characteristics, both at an early age and at later ages, which results from the addition of nitrite–nitrate based accelerators to concrete in varying amounts. These accelerators also act as anti-freezing agents. The results show that an increased quantity of nitrite–nitrate based accelerators caused an increase in the early strength of the concrete. This was due to the formation of nitrite and nitrate hydrates in large amounts, in addition to ettringite containing SO42, which is generated during the hydration reaction of normal Portland cement at an early age. On the other hand, at later ages, there was a rise in nitrite and nitrate hydrates with needle crystal structures exhibiting brittle fracture behavior. A decrease in C–S–H gel and Ca(OH)2 hydrates, deemed to have caused a decline in strength on Day 3 and thereafter, was also observed.

Beschreibung: This study presents a model for simulating the microscopic heat transfer processes in a wood-metal composite material. The model was developed by analyzing the microstructure of experimental samples comprising a melted alloy impregnated in a wood matrix. According to the thermal parameters of the materials and the boundary conditions, an analytical model of microscale heat transfer was established using Abaqus finite element analysis software. The model was validated experimentally by comparing temperature curves obtained via simulation and experiments; the resulting correlation coefficient was 0.96557. We then analyzed the temperature distribution of the composite material with different cell geometries and heat transfer conditions (heat transfer direction and applied temperature). The thermal properties of the unit cell models were in good agreement with the general trends predicted by several heat transfer equations. This study provides a method for analyzing the microscale heat transfer process in wood-based composites. In addition, the model framework characteristics can be used to evaluate the heat transfer mechanism of impregnated modified wood.

Beschreibung: A two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (2D CFD) simulation of a low-speed two-stroke marine engine simulation was performed in order to investigate the performance of 2D meshes that allow the use of more complex chemical schemes and pollutant formation analysis. Various mesh density simulations were compared with a 3D mesh simulation and with the experimentally obtained cylinder pressure. A heavy fuel model and a soot model were implemented in the software. Finally, the influences of three water injection strategies were simulated and evaluated in order to investigate the capability of the model and the influence of water injection on NOx formation, soot formation, and engine performance. We conclude that the direct water injection strategy reduces NOx emissions without adversely affecting the engine performance or soot emissions. The other two strategies—Intake air humidification and direct injection of fuel–water emulsion—reduced NOx emissions but at the cost of higher soot emissions or reduced engine performance.

Beschreibung: As mariculture progresses offshore in the US Exclusive Economic Zone, technical and ecological challenges need to be overcome, such as the choice of suitable sites that favor the production of target species. The offshore culture of blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, is performed with submerged longlines and mussels need to withstand more motion than on coastal sites. Temperature affects the ability of the byssus to adhere to farming rope, while chlorophyll concentration provides an estimation of food availability. Together, these are important factors in predicting the suitability of offshore mussel farms. To identify suitable depth of submersion for mussel ropes in New England federal waters, historical oceanographic data of temperature and chlorophyll a from 2005 to 2012 were used. The results suggest that mussel ropes were submerged during summer to a minimum depth of 15 m in northern and a 20-m depth in southern areas of New England where temperature is at a species-optimum and phytoplankton biomass is abundant. For the site offshore Massachusetts, in situ biodeposition measurements validated predicted depth, confirming satisfactory mussel performance. Promising local areas have shallow thermoclines, such as offshore Long Island, Cape Ann and New Hampshire. Recommended depths can be adjusted to future temperature increases associated with climate change.

Beschreibung: In the South China Sea, calcareous sand, as a natural foundation, has the features of low mechanical properties, including its compressive strength. With the development of South China Sea islands, the problems of calcareous sand foundation are encountered in the process. However, the experience of traditional pile foundation engineering could not be applied to calcareous sand. In this study, different proportions of curing agents were added to calcareous sand to improve the compressive strength. The quantitative analysis of the relationship between the unconfined compressive strength and microstructure of solidified calcareous sand is discussed. The unconfined compressive strength was gauged from unconfined compressive strength tests. Microscopic images, acquired using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), were processed using the Image-Pro Plus (IPP) image processing software. The microscopic parameters, obtained using IPP, include the average equivalent particle size (Dp), the average equivalent aperture size (Db), and the plane pore ratio (e). This research demonstrates that the curing agent could improve the compressive strength, which has a relation with the three microstructure parameters. The curing agent, through hydration reaction, generates hydration products, i.e., calcium silicate hydrate, calcium hydroxide, and calcite crystals. They adhere to the surface of the particles or fill the space between the particles, which helps increase the compressive strength. In addition, there is a good linear relationship between the macroscopic mechanics and the microscopic parameters. Using the mathematical relation between the macroscopic and microscopic parameters, the correlation can be built for macro-microscopic research.

Beschreibung: Radar signal processing mainly focuses on target detection, classification, estimation, filtering, and so on. Compressed sensing radar (CSR) technology can potentially provide additional tools to simultaneously reduce computational complexity and effectively solve inference problems. CSR allows direct compressive signal processing without the need to reconstruct the signal. This study aimed to solve the problem of CSR detection without signal recovery by optimizing the transmit waveform. Therefore, a waveform optimization method was introduced to improve the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in the case where the target signal is corrupted by colored interference and noise having known statistical characteristics. Two different target models are discussed: deterministic and random. In the case of a deterministic target, the optimum transmit waveform is derived by maximizing the SINR and a suboptimum solution is also presented. In the case of random target, an iterative waveform optimization method is proposed to maximize the output SINR. This approach ensures that SINR performance is improved in each iteration step. The performance of these methods is illustrated by computer simulation.

Beschreibung: This paper develops a joint approach for time-evolving sound speed field (SSF) inversion and moving source localization in shallow water environment. The SSF is parameterized in terms of the first three empirical orthogonal function (EOF) coefficients. The approach treats both first three EOF coefficients and source parameters (e.g., source depth, range and speed) as state vectors of evolving with time, and a measurement vector that incorporates acoustic information via a vertical line array (VLA), and then the inversion problem is formulated in a state-space model. The processors of the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) are used to estimate the evolution of those six parameters. Simulation results verify the proposed approach, which enable it to invert the SSF and locate the moving source simultaneously. The root-mean-square-error (RMSE) is employed to evaluate the effectiveness of this proposed approach. The interfile comparison shows that the EnKF outperform the EKF. For the EnKF, the robustness of the approach under the sparse vertical array configuration is verified. Moreover, the impact of the source-VLA deployment on the estimation is also concerned.

Beschreibung: Reducing soil tillage can lead to many benefits, but this practice often increases weed abundance and thus the need for herbicides, especially during the transition phase from inversion tillage to non-inversion tillage. We evaluated if subsidiary crops (SCs, e.g., cover crops) can mitigate the effects of non-inversion tillage on weed abundance. Two-year experiments studying SC use, tillage intensity, and nitrogen (N) fertilization level were carried out twice at six sites throughout northern and central Europe. SCs significantly reduced weed cover throughout the intercrop period (−55% to −1% depending on site), but only slightly during the main crops. Overall weed abundance and weed biomass were higher when using non-inversion tillage with SCs compared to inversion tillage without SCs. The effects differed due to site-specific weed pressure and management. With increasing weed pressure, the effect of SCs decreased, and the advantage of inversion over non-inversion tillage increased. N fertilization level did not affect weed abundance. The results suggest that SCs can contribute by controlling weeds but cannot fully compensate for reduced weed control of non-inversion tillage in the transition phase. Using non-inversion tillage together with SCs is primarily recommended in low weed pressure environments.

Beschreibung: In an attempt to unveil the impact of the material law selection on the numerical modelling and analysis of the electromagnetic properties of superconducting coils, in this paper we compare the four most common approaches to the E-J power laws that serve as a modelling tool for the conductivity properties of the second generation of high-temperature superconducting (2G-HTS) tapes. The material laws considered are: (i) the celebrated E-J critical-state like-model, with constant critical current density and no dependence with the magnetic field; (ii) the classical Kim’s model which introduces an isotropic dependence with the environment magnetic field; (iii) a semi-empirical Kim-like model with an orthonormal field dependence, J c ( B ) , widely used for the modelling of HTS thin films; and (iv) the experimentally measured E–J material law for SuperPower Inc. 2G-HTS tapes, which account for the magneto-angular anisotropy of the in-field critical current density J c ( B ; θ ) , with a derived function similar to Kim’s model but taking into account some microstructural parameters, such as the electron mass anisotropy ratio ( γ ) of the superconducting layer. Particular attention has been given to those physical quantities which within a macroscopic approach can be measured by well-established experimental setups, such as the measurement of the critical current density for each of the turns of the superconducting coil, the resulting distribution of magnetic field, and the curve of hysteretic losses for different amplitudes of an applied alternating transport current at self-field conditions. We demonstrate that although all these superconducting material laws are equally valid from a purely qualitative perspective, the critical state-like model is incapable of predicting the local variation of the critical current density across each of the turns of the superconducting coil, or its non-homogeneous distribution along the width of the superconducting tape. However, depending on the physical quantity of interest and the error tolerance allowed between the numerical predictions and the experimental measurements, in this paper decision criteria are established for different regimes of the applied current, where the suitability of one or another model could be ensured, regardless of whether the actual magneto angular anisotropy properties of the superconducting tape are known.
