Beschreibung: This study corresponds to the cruise around the Galapagos Islands carried out by the Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy in August 2000. The purpose was to understand, quantitatively and qualitatively, the ecological dynamics of the phytoplankton during the dry season. The chlorophyll "a" data from surface waters registered high concentrations (0.87 - 2.18 mg/m3) southwest off the Galapagos Islands, reflecting upwelling processes. Sub-surface-water values were higher southward, while the lowest values were found to the north. Nuclei of high chlorophyll "a" content were found to the southwest of the Galapagos (10 m), and to the southeast (40-50 m). The cellular biomass was represented by P. delicatissima, species responsible for the high fertility in the center of the upwelling area and to the southwest and south off the Galapagos, Thalassiosira subtilis and Gymnodinium sp. were dominant to the east. The incidence of the Cromwell Current was accented toward 91° and 92°W; toward 89°W different conditions were shown, probably associated to the influence of the Humboldt Current. The biomass in 55µm mesh size fraction was dominated by P. delicatissima (0 m); P. delicatissima, C. compresus and C. curvisetus ( 0 - 50 m). C. tripos and G. polyedra, warm water species dominated to the north off the Galapagos in surface waters, while in sub-surface waters these species dominated to the southeast. This atypical behaviour was observed during the cruise of May 2000, when upwelling conditions were not evident.

Beschreibung: Changes on some oceanographic conditions as well surface planktonic community structure were studied during 33 months (December 1999- August 2002) at a fixed station in the Gulf of Guayaquil. Copepods, ostacods and decapod larvae were the most abundant zooplankton (300 µ mesh size) taxa, followed by fish larvae, chaetognaths, medusae, and mysidaceans. The lower abundance taxa were fish eggs, polychaeths, amphipods, pteropods, lamellibranch, cirriped larvae, and gasteropods. Phytoplankton was dominated by diatoms. The effect of the oceanographic variability on the zooplanktonic distribution, abundance, and population dynamics is unknown due to lack of appropriate continuity on sampling and analyses. The two most abundant copepod species were identified. Acartia danae dominated on the dry season, and Labidocera lubbocckii on the rainy season. Although, in general, copepod abundance was high, this diminished during the rainy seasons of 2000 (138-199 org/m3) and 2002 (175-327 org./m3), with relation to 2001 (1235-2238 org/m3). In march and april it was (6785 y 19887 org./m3). Ostracods, mainly Conchoecia sp., were relatively abundant (compared to copepods) and they were sometimes present in higher numbers. Decapods larvae were more abundand during the rainy season, specially in 2002. High abundance of copepods was find to be associated to lower water temperature, and decapod larvae, to higher temperatures. Diatoms were the main components of the phytoplankton community, with dominance of Skeletonema costatum, Coscinodiscus excentricus y Thalassiotrix frauenfeldii.

Beschreibung: During the VII Ecuadorian Expedition to Antarctic in the Guayaquil - Valparaíso - Guayaquil route (december/97 - march/98), oceanographic stations were performing to register cuali-cuantitative variations of phytoplankton of Southeastern Pacific Ocean during "El Nino" 1997-98 conditions. The biomass of phytoplankton is measured chlorophylls "a" levels showed lower concentrations between 0.015-04 mg/m³ to the 100m depth. The phytoplankton composition in december/97, registered the most dominance of diatoms at southward Gulf of Guayaquil with lower concentration at 20° S, the main species were Chaetoceros affinis, Skeletonema costatum, Rhizosolenia imbricata, Ch, leavis, R. alata var curvirrostris, Climacodium biconcavum, R. styliformis. The dinoflagellates species had the widest distribution in the area studied (3°16'-31°23'S) with rank of temperature between 27.54°C and 17.67°C, were Ceratium incisum, C. carriense, C. breve, C. teres, C. falcatiforme, C. euuarcuatum, C. pavillardi, Dinophysis caudata, Ornithocercus steinii, O. Thumi, O. magnificus, Pyrocystis fusiformis, Protoperidinium quarnerense, P. cf conicum, P. longipes, P. ocanicum, P. pedunculatum, Prorocentrum micans, Podolampas bipes, and some Epiplocides reticulata, Eutintinnus lusussundae, was indicators of oceanic waters advanced to chilean area. At to 30° S, the dinoflagellates were most dominant groups, with C. tripos, C. furca, C. pentagonum var subrrostrum, Goniodoma polyedricum, G. polygramma, species.

Beschreibung: This study was carried out during December 2000, onboard the R/V Orion of the Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy. The objetive was to establish the relationship between chlorophyll "a" content and the abundance of species or groups of species of micro-algae inside a region with ocean-climate system variability in the Tropical Pacific Ocean along the Ecuadorian coast. The highest chlorophyll content was found between 1°3 S and 3°S, with a positive correlation to the cellular biomass, including species of phytoplankton such as Rhizosolenia stoltherfothi, Thalassiosira subtiles, Pseudonitzschia delicatissima, P. longissima, Leptocylindrus danicus, Gymnodinium sp., y Messodinium rubrum. However, the biomass calculated from the content of the 55 µm mesh size was dominated by Rhizosolenia imbricata, T. subtiles, Chaetoceros affinis, L. danicus, Chaetoceros curvisetus. The dinoflagellates showed concentrations of species that characterized zones of warm water masses (Protoperidinium crassipes, Gonyaulax polyedra, Dinophysis caudata towards the NE, and C. tripos, G. polyedricum, C. furca towards the SE of the study area). The phytoplankton distribution did not reflect the position of the Equatorial Front, determined as an almost zonal phenomenon with a weak surface thermal gradient (23-25°C). The high abundances of M. rubrum and Gymnodinium sp., might have been related to the influence of the cold Humboldt Current and this may have produced some "red tide" events towards the coastal margin.

Beschreibung: The investigations of chlorophylls, cell counts, and qualitative or indicators species (net 50u), were presented, that used simultaneously provide valuable ecological information on the community of the phytoplankton accomplished in five bays: Bahia Naufragio (San Cristóbal Island), B. Pto. Velasco Ibarra (Floreana island), B.Villamil (Isabela Island), B. Academia (Santa Cruz Island), B. Darwin (Genovesa Island), during September- October/1999. Biomass in weight (chlorophyll "a") of 0.560 mg/m³ corresponds to a cellular biomass of 403.628 cel/l, with a relationship of 1.1, with exception of the area of upwelling in Isabela that was 1.3 (1.546 mg/m³: 5405.123 cel/l). 71 species were identified in water samples and 132 species in net samples (50u) in the community of the phytoplankton on each Island. The diatoms were dominant and the Dinoflagellates, Tintínnidos, Cocolitofóridos, Cyanophytas, Microflagellates and Ciliados were found in a low concentration. In cell counts Thalassiosira subtilis and Gymnodinium sp., were the species of high occurrence in all the bays, except for Isabela wich presented a bloom of Chaetoceros curvisetus. In net samples (50u), on Isabela Island and Floreana Island indicators species of upwelling were registered, among them we found: Corethron criophilum, C. curvisetus, Thalassiosira, subtilis, Gymnodinium sp.; On San Cristóbal y santa Cruz the species diversity evidenced a mixture zone mainly with species of tropical warm conditions as Ceratocorys horrida, Blepharocysta splendor, C. tripos, C. trichoceros, C. deflexum, C. contortum, C. vultur, C. massiliense, C. strctum, Dinophysis caudata, D. forthii, D. doriforum, Ornithcercus steinii, O. magnificus, Goniodoma polyedricum, Gonyaulax sp. The distribution of species presented a particular characteristic for each bay. Furthermore, some benthic species were observed wich are indicators from strong turbulence zones in the water column. As a general rule for the season between september and october of 1999, was observed a good biological productivity associated with the current of Cromwell with light indicator toward the next seasonal change, probably by local and extra regional process influence of the climate conditions.

Beschreibung: The plankton monitoring in the San Lorenzo estuary in june 2006. Were registered 128 species of the phytoplankton (cuantitative method) and 50 species (cualitative). The most representative diatomeas were S. costatum, T. nitzschioides, P. longissima, L. danicus, Navicula sp., sulcata P. ; T. nitzschioides, Thalassiosira sp. and flagellated (cuantitative); S. costatum, Coscinodiscus sp., N. sigma and P. sulcata (qualitative). The presence of Gymnodinium sp., P. maximun and M. rubrum could be associated with future risks for the formation of red tides in this estuary. In the results its Zooplancton registered 16 mainly taxas constituted by Brachyura Zoea and Copepods, distributed in the whole area of study mainly in stations 6 and 7 near the confluence of the Nadadero Grande river and the San Lorenzo estuary, coincident with the high biomass of the phytoplankton. Ichthyoplankton registered abundance of egg stages of fish in station 4 and larvae of fish in station 7, sites that could be considered like ecological niches of high biological productivity. The diversity indices reflect intermediate values between 2 to 3 bits/cel for the phytoplankton and zooplankton. The estuaries and effluents that conform the San Lorenzo channel, this area is considered like an associated ecological niche the fishing importance and the plankton biodiversity when mangrove in the community of San Lorenzo.

Beschreibung: The present research corresponds to the cruise carried out by the Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy in september 2001, between 89°W - 81°1W and 1°N - 3°3S. The distribution of plankton populations associated with upwelling areas of the coastal brunch of the Humboldt Current in the Gulf of Guayaquil, and toward the Galápagos, upwelling of the Cromwell Current, forming patches in the central region and toward the Gulf of Guayaquil, is decribed. Increased phytoplankton (diatoms) production was found south of the equatorial region, coincident with the presence of dinoflagellates species of warm-oceanic waters allowing slight mixed areas. The higher abundance of zooplankton (copepods) were found to the east of the Galápagos Islands, decreasing toward the continent. These bio-geographic conditions point to higher productivity areas to the south and lower productivity areas to the north of the studied area, characterized by the position of the equatorial front. A. patch the high biological productivity was also evidenced in the oceanic region, atypical condition associated to the global cooling of the La Niña event, and/ or advances of upwelling waters toward the continent, processes of great importance for the pelagic resources of Ecuador.

Beschreibung: During the cruise COII99, that took place September the 20th until October the 8th of 1999, aboard the V/R ORION of the ecuadorian Navy, where collected samples for the estimate of chlorophyll were, as well as cells counts and indicators of the phytoplankton are analyzed in 20 oceanographic stations (89-92°W; 1°N-2°S). The average of chlorophyll "a" surface was of 0.250 mg/m³, the highest concentration was between 0.526- 0.529 mg/m³, westward of Isabela Island, associated with the upwelling of Cromwell;and other flow to the southeast of the Islands (90°W) associated with the Current of Humboldt, cue this match with the standards of these currents for the season, and they have an impact on the high biological productivity. The smallest concentrations were found in the north side of the Galapagos. 88 species were identified in water samples and 119 species in net samples. The diatoms were dominant, in low concentration Dinoflagelados, Tintínnidos, Cocolitofóridos, Cyanophytas, Microflagelados and Ciliados. pseudonitzschia delicatissima, Thalassiosira subtilis and Gymnodinium sp. they were species with greater cellular content in the sections 92°, 91°, 90° and 89°W, probably related to three different water masses ( equatorial subtropical surface, of Cromwell and Humboldt) that originated a greatdiversity of species in the insular ecosistem. The smaller biological productivity was registered northward of the study area, related to an increase in species of warm conditions Planktoniella sol, Rhizosolenia imbricata, Proboscia alata, Ceratium azoricum, C. tripos. C.trichoceros, C. fusus, C. teres, C. lunula, C.furca, C. vultur, C. pentagunum, Gonyaulax polyedra, Goniodoma polyedricum, Protoperidinium crassipes), indicating water masses with low content of chlorophyll "a" and nutrients.

Beschreibung: During 1988-1999 were carried out 23 oceanographic cruise on board the B/I-ORION of the Instituto Oceanográfico de la Armada (INOCAR) in the Tropical Pacific Equatorial. The study area was a geographical location among 81°W-94°W y 2°N - 3.23°S of Ecuador. This data were contained by seasonal category, with a total of 23 cruises, 486 stations and 3187 data to chlorophyll sampling in 8 levels of depth (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 40, 50, 75m). The results emphasized two areas of more productivity. 1) In Galapagos this upwelling were presented with the high biomass of chlorophyll 〉0.5 mg/m³, was presented toward the south region of Galapagos. Other nucleus of 1.5 mg/m³ among Island Isabela and Fernandina in dry seasonal. In the humid seasonal was registered two nuclei (1.0 mg/m³), a nucleus to the west of Galapagos associated with Cromwell Current and another nucleus to Island San Cristobal southeast possibly associated with a mixture of upwelling Cromwell and Humboldt. 2) In Gulf of Guayaquil: it is the high estuary in profile of the South American Pacific, present nuclei among 1 to 3 chlorophyll mg/m³. At level subsuperficial the biggest density was located among the 0 to at 30m of depth, condition that varies depending on the intensity of the area of mixtures of appeared waters and warm waters lightly. During events El Niño the chlorophyll biomass diminished with values 〈0.2 mg/m³, due to the discontinuity of the upwelling and/or masses of waters warm poor in nutrients. These areas of more biological productivity in chlorophyll "a" to they would be associated to the areas of more captures of fishing pelagic and of the Tuna.

Beschreibung: Thirty one surface and twenty four sub-surface (50 m) oceanographic stations were analyzed during three cruises: December 1991, march 1992 and march 1993. During this period a strong "El Niño" 1991-92 event appeared. The physical conditions during the development of "El Niño 91-92" event did not present a defined pattern during the three cruises, showing particular characteristics for each studied region of the Equatorial East Pacific Ocean. Evidence that the phytoplankton decreased drastically in december 1991 was found approximately three months before the high temperatures of march 1992. However, the biological productivity in march 1992 increased, probably due to the development of an intense sub-surface upwelling. Later in march 1993, the anomalous "El Niño" conditions prevailed, with the higher chlorophyll layer deepened to approximately 40m, specially, in the south west of the studied area. The main species with high cell density in the three cruises were B. splendor-maris, P. sol, G. polyedricum, C. tripos, R. alata, R. hebetata. These species showed variability in their distribution, presenting nucleus of associated Diatoms and Dinoflagellates. These environment conditions allowed us to establish the existence of inter-specific components between generalist species (diatoms) and specialist species (dinoflagellates); both groups were eurithermic species during "El Niño 1991-93".

Beschreibung: This research is part of an environmental monitoring of plankton and its physical and chemical response around the platform located offshore Campo Amistad, near Santa Clara Island, southeast of the Gulf in external Guayaquil. The study was carried out between july 30 and august 31-2001, onboard the R/V Orión of te Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy. The chlorophyll "a" biomass presented values between 0.6 and 1.52 mg/m³ in surface waters, with averages of 1.07 to 0.99 mg/m³ (10 m), 0.79 (20 m) and 0.58 (30 m) mg/m³. The larger amounts of biomass and daily variability were found in the northern part of the platform, while the opposite trend was observed in its western area. One hundred and three phytoplankton species were identified, with dominance of centric diatoms of mainly Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros curvisetus. Dinoflagellates presented high diversity and low biomass; Ceratium dens was the dominant species, characterizing influences of external water masses in the estuary. The zooplankton fauna was represented by 28 groups, with dominance of cladocera and copepods; the highest density of organisms was found the 17h00 hours. High density of cladocera presented a strong positive relationship to phytoplankton abundance, and a negative correlation to copepod abundance. The environmental conditions in the surface thermal structure were almost stable, with an average of 22.5°C. The lowest temperatures were found southwest of the platform (subsurface), coincident with a slight increase in nutrients (nitrate and silicate). The marine biota associated with these environmental conditions presented high diversity, implying the absence of eutrophication incidence in the estuary area of the platform.

Beschreibung: Scientific investigations in Antarctica are, for many different reasons, a challenging and fascinating task. Measurements, observations and field operations must be carefully planned well in advance and the capacity of successfully meeting the goals of a scientific project is often related to the capacity of forecasting and anticipating the many different potential mishaps. In order to do that, experience and logistic support are crucial. On the scientific side, the team must be aware of its tasks and be prepared to carry out observations in a hostile environment: both technology and human resources have to be suitably selected, prepared, tested and trained. On the logistic side, nations, institutions and any other organisation involved in the expeditions must ensure the proper amount of competence and practical support. The history of modern Italian Antarctic expeditions dates back to the middle 80’s when the first infrastructures of “Mario Zucchelli Station”, formerly Terra Nova Bay Station, were settled at Terra Nova Bay, Northern Victoria Land. Only a few years later, the first geodetic infrastructures were planned and built. Italian geodetic facilities and activities were, ever since, being constantly maintained and developed. Nowadays, the most remarkable geodetic infrastructures are the permanent Global Positioning System (GPS) station (TNB1) installed at Mario Zucchelli and the GPS geodetic network Victoria Land Network for DEFormation control (VLNDEF) entirely deployed on an area extending between 71° S and 76° S and 160° E and 170° E. These facilities do not only allow carrying out utmost geodetic investigations but also posses interesting capacities on the international multidisciplinary scientific scenario. In order to fully exploit their potentiality, management and maintenance of the infrastructure are crucial; nevertheless, in order to perform high quality scientific research, these abilities must be coupled with the knowledge concerning a proper use and a correct processing of the information that these infrastructures can provide. This work focuses on the different methods that can be applied to process the observations that are performed with GPS technique in Northern Victoria Land, aiming at reaching the highest accuracy of results and assuring the larger significance and versatility of the processing outcomes. Three software were used for the analysis, namely: Bernese v.5.0, Gipsy/Oasis II and Gamit/Globk. The working data sets are (i) the permanent GPS station TNB1 observations continuously performed since 1998 and (ii) the five episodic campaigns performed on the sites of VLNDEF. The two infrastructures can be regarded as neat examples of standard geodetic installation in Antarctica. Therefore, the technological solutions that were adopted and applied for establishing the GPS permanent station and the VLNDEF geodetic network as well as the data processing strategies and the data analysis procedures that were tested on their observation will be illustrated in detail. The results will be presented, compared and discussed. Furthermore, their potentials and role in geodetic research will be carefully described; their versatility will also be highlighted in the foreground of a multidisciplinary Antarctic international scientific activity.
