    Notes: This preliminary paper reviews recent evidence that suggests that there is a strong link between increasing consumption of caffeine and reduced incidence of Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease currently affects 1 in 1,000 of the general population and has no cure. Whilst the biological changes resulting in Parkinson's disease symptoms are well known, the initial cause of these is not. Should a relatively simple lifestyle factor such as caffeine be proven to protect against Parkinson's disease, then this represents a major breakthrough in knowledge about the disease.

    Notes: Evidence for the harmful effect of salt on the health of adults is growing and is now so overwhelming that government authorities and health experts are recommending that adults should not consume more than 6g of salt a day. However, no such recommendations exist for children. Presents evidence to show that by eating their current high-salt diet children are storing up health problems for the future. Evidence also exists to show that children's poor diets are having health implications now, such as worsening of asthma and possibly preventing children from achieving their peak bone mass. Children's diets have already been shown to increase the risk of obesity, heart disease and other health problems and these problems are being compounded by a high salt intake. Food providers and industry need to follow the lead of most major supermarkets, and gradually start to reduce the level of salt in food provided for both adults and children.

    Notes: The Food Standards Agency has set a five-year target to reduce foodborne disease in the UK by 20 per cent. The Agency's strategy proposes measures throughout the food chain, from the farm to the kitchen. It is designed to reduce the risks associated with common vehicles of foodborne infections, such as raw meat, poultry, milk and dairy products, and to promote effective management of food safety, based on the principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, in all food businesses. Measures to improve food hygiene in the kitchen, whether commercial or domestic, are also planned, underpinned by a media-based food hygiene campaign. The campaign will aim to raise the profile of food safety on the public agenda and deliver key preventative messages about the cooking and handling of food. Reduction in foodborne disease will be monitored through laboratory reports of key foodborne pathogens.

    Notes: As the substantial contribution of resistant starch to food nutritional quality and disease prevention becomes more obvious, the challenge of incorporating it in the diet and increasing its intake remains. Western diets in particular, are estimated to have very low levels of resistant starch, and this has been linked to the prevalence of some of the non-infectious diseases such as colorectal cancer and type 2 diabetes. There is a need therefore to increase the consumption of foods high in resistant starch. Resistant starch levels in food are determined by the nature of the starch and the processing techniques applied in production. Application of processes that optimize and stabilize resistant starch and its utilization as an ingredient in functional food product development will greatly contribute to its availability for consumption. This will enable attainment of the attendant physiological benefits of resistant starch, primarily in the area of disease prevention.

    Notes: Increased incidents of food poisoning in recent years have greatly shaken consumers' confidence in food. Livestock farmers are among the least trusted parties in the food supply chain. Building trust between consumers and livestock farmers is critical in order to maintain benefit to both parties. In this context, this paper attempts to explore the process on how trust is developed. By adopting stepwise multiple regression, a conceptual model was tested with 182 respondents. Empirical results showed that trustful information, care for consumers, honesty and fairness to consumers are important to building trust during the period of food safety concerns. Suggestions for future research together with implications for livestock farmers are given.

    Notes: The efficacy of roselle as a functional food has been revealed lately, especially for its antioxidant bioactivity. In this study, the benefits of roselle were further studied in vivo using the model of male Sprague Dawley rats fed with normal diets (C), 2.5 percent roselle (R), 2.5 percent roselle with 15 percent soybean oil (RO) and 15 percent soybean oil (O) for 25 weeks. The results demonstrated that supplementation of roselle in the diets significantly (p 〈 0.05) reduced the gross body weight and increased the high-density lipoproteins cholesterol (HDL-C) compared to the rats fed with normal diets and oil diets, and reduced the level of triglycerides in the serum. Serum total cholesterol of R group decreased compared to C but increased in RO compared to O group. Significant increase (p 〈 0.05) of serum uric acid was observed in R group at week 15 and 20. Addition of roselle in oil diet significantly decreased (p 〈 0.05) the malondialdehyde formation at week 20 and 25 but there was no significant effect of roselle on the catalase activity among the treatments at all time points. Suggests that roselle might play a role in the prevention of atherosclerosis and obesity.

    Notes: A study was conducted to determine the antioxidative properties of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) methanol extract by monitoring the formation of diene-conjugated compounds and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in linoleic acid model system. The properties were compared to those of butylated hydroxy-anisole (BHA) and a-tocopherol. Results indicated that the roselle extract showed stronger antioxidant properties than BHA or a-tocopherol. A total of 200 parts per million (ppm) of the extract inhibited more than 85 per cent of diene-conjugated compounds after seven days of incubation at 40?C. The total phenolic compound was found to be 2.96mg/g calyx as gallic acid equivalent. This indicates that roselle is a good source of natural antioxidants which may protect the body from damage by free radicals and lipid peroxidation. The protective effect is probably through the action of highly bioavailable ascorbic acid, ß-carotene and phenolic compounds, especially the anthocyanins.

However, fish wastes pose a particular technological problem, as they release high levels of ammonia when digested, which then inhibits the digestion process. Having overcome these technical problems, it is important that there is a long term, financially viable outlet for the products of the digestion process. The organic sector places high demands on the production of certified inputs, but, if these can be met, this sector represents a potentially high value market for the products of a digestion process.

    Notes: As the demand for organic foods has grown globally, disputes have arisen on whether organic foods are more nutritious, safer, and better for the environment. To many consumers, though, a major issue is whether organic foods taste different and, especially if they are being asked to pay a premium price, whether they taste better. Via the use of sensory analysis using trained panellists, and consumer testing, research was carried out to determine whether the claim of "organic food tastes better" could be substantiated. The study found that organic orange juice was perceived as tasting better than conventional orange juice; however, no differences were found between organic and conventional milk. Therefore, it is concluded that the global claim that "organic food tastes better" is not valid, and each product type should be treated separately before a claim can be made.

    Notes: Okro (Abelmoschus esculentus) was grown in the field and green house and fertilized with organic-based fertilizer (OBF), organic and chemical fertilizers. Okro soups produced from the okro fruits harvested from the various fertilizers treatments were subjected to sensory evaluation tests. Application of varying rates of organic fertilizers on the greenhouse okro plants showed that 10 tonnes per hectare of organic fertilizer led to significant increases in microbial activities in the root zone and it also gave the highest pod yield. In the sensory evaluation test of organically grown okro, panelists preferred organically grown okro soup to the chemically grown variant when they assessed the colour, taste, texture, flavour and drawness. Organically grown okro enjoyed more acceptability than tthe chemically grown. In the field trial,no significant effects of all the treatments were found on some growth parameters assessed. However, application of 5t/ha of OBF led to significant increases in the number of okro pods.

    Notes: The paper deals with using the maleinized polybutadiene as a binder in anticorrosive coating compositions. This aqueous emulsion can be as a binder mixed with the styrene–acrylate dispersion in any ratio, evaluating thus positively a series of final anticorrosive coating properties. The aqueous emulsion binder based on the maleinized polybutadiene was compared to other aqueous (alkyd, urethanized alkyd, or polyurethane) emulsions. The coatings formed by the aqueous maleinized polybutadiene emulsion and styrene–acrylate dispersion show a far higher efficiency than the coatings consisting of a styrene–acrylate dispersion alone with respect to anticorrosion protection function.

    Notes: A severe problem with water-borne paints containing aluminium or zinc pigments is hydrogen corrosion of these metals in the aqueous alkaline paint media. The subject of the present study is the examination of corrosion inhibition of aluminium and zinc pigments in aqueous alkaline media by different amino and polyamino acids. Aspartic acid inhibits this corrosion reaction of aluminium pigment only at pH 8 (protection factor 96 per cent) whereas polyaspartic acids do not. In contrast, aspartic acid stimulates the corrosion reaction of zinc pigment whereas polyaspartic acids show a moderate corrosion inhibiting effect. So, corrosion inhibition by aspartic and polyaspartic acids is completely different on aluminium and zinc pigment.

    Notes: Polyurethane (PU) anionomer having 2-ethoxymethacrylate terminal groups was prepared in a methyl methacrylate/n-butyl acrylate mixture as a reactive diluent, following a prepolymer mixing process. This prepolymer-acrylic monomer mixture was chain extended in a water/surfactant solution using different dispersion speeds. Stability tests of PU-acrylic monomer dispersions before polymerization were performed at different temperatures by following the particle size evolution. After the dispersion process the kinetics of batch emulsion polymerization at 70°C using different concentrations of initiator was investigated. Data are compared with published results of batch emulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate/n-butyl acrylate. The effect of triethylamine, used in the prepolymer synthesis, on the emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers was also studied. The kinetic results indicate that during emulsion polymerization of PU acrylic mixture, some coagulation takes place, mainly due to changes in ionic strength of the medium, before stable latex particles are formed. The presence of the PU prepolymer seems not to affect the kinetics of batch copolymerization of methyl methacrylate/n-butyl acrylate monomers.

The properties of hardened coatings (such as hardness, chemical stability, and adhesion to substrate) were followed in dependence on the ratios of reaction components. An apparatus was built for measuring the formaldehyde emissions escaping from the solid coating films. The determination was performed by the pararosaniline method. The addition of imidazolidine in a concentration up to 10 per cent can reduce the emissions of formaldehyde escaping from the solid films to a considerable amount.

    Notes: Modifications of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) can improve the properties and performance of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) emulsions stabilized with these modified colloids. Water resistance and toughness of the emulsions as wood adhesives can be achieved through chemical reactions of the hydroxy groups of the colloid with various modifiers. The chemical changes can be carried out either in the preparation of PVA through hydrolysis of copolymers of vinyl acetate and other monomers, or by the reaction of modifiers with PVA aqueous solutions. The modified PVAc emulsions show better properties than those of the conventional emulsions in performance tests and applications. The modified colloids are becoming increasingly used in the manufacture of PVAc emulsions in the adhesive industry, because of their advantages over emulsions made using conventional (unmodified) PVA.     Notes: A novel two series of self-sequestering surfactants have been prepared by the reaction of itaconic acid, phthalic anhydride, citric acid with oxypropylated 1,4-butane diol and oxypropylated 1,6-hexane diol. The structure features of these surfactants have been confirmed by IR and 1H NMR spectra. These surfactants exhibit excellent properties of self-sequestering. Besides good surface active properties including surface tension, interfacial tension, low foaming, good wetting properties, good stability towards acidic and basic media, emulsifying power and dispresent properties, solubilization properties and good biodegradability, they possess autonomous sequestering ability without any help of additional sequestering agent.

    Notes: Dolomite is of immense importance for industrial applications. It is occuring in many locations in Egypt. Complete investigation and identification of the ore has been performed via chemical analysis and spectro-photometric measurements using X-ray fluroscence, X-ray diffraction and electron microscope. The X-ray diffraction pattern indicated that Egyptian dolomite is a crystalline material and electron microscope analysis showed that it has a lameller shape. Egyptian dolomite sample was evaluated as an extender pigment according to standard international specifications and proved to be excellent one for coating applications. Surface modification of dolomite ore particles has been carried out using stearic acid in cyclohexane. The modification concerned with the determination of adsorption isotherm, sediment volume, sedimentation rate, and dispersion properties to determine monolayer surface coverage of the ore particles. The unmodified and modified dolomite samples have been incorporated in anticorrosive primer formulations. The painted films were tested and examined in the laboratory accelerated corrosion test. Promising results were achieved and the films showed high performance as efficient extender pigment for coating applications that can replace satisfactorily its similar imported pigments.

Pigments were obtained by attaching different organic dyes, to a modified silica surface. The adsorption process was conducted in an aqueous suspension of the modified silica in the presence of the dye. In order to determine effect of silane on the dye adsorption process various amounts of the modifying compound was used. The microscopic properties, colour and particle size distribution were examined for the modified silicas and the obtained pigments.

    Notes: In July 2000 a study was undertaken into the facilities offered for drinking water at 54 schools in North Yorkshire. The work also looked at hygiene standards at drinking water fountains and whether they could pose any risk of contamination to children using them. The results showed the standard of facilities offered to children at schools varied considerably. In most schools the main provision for drinking water was from coldwater taps in school toilets. The next most popular option was drinking water fountains. A visual hygiene assessment of the fountains revealed that many of the fountains in toilets were not well maintained or clean. Traditional hygiene swabs taken from 47 fountains in 17 schools gave high bacterial colony counts, above what would be expected on a facility used for obtaining a drink of water. The main conclusion of the study was that school toilets are not an ideal type of environment for obtaining drinking water and better facilities need to be offered to children.

    Notes: The purpose of this research was to verify the changes in the body weight of breastfeeding women, using the anthropometric and the bioelectrical impedance (BIA) methods. The sample was formed by 30 women who were exclusively breastfeeding their children, with an average age of 27.9±4.4 years old, followed up during four appointments in a public hospital of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The anthropometric data showed a significant reduction of body weight during the studied period. Regarding skinfolds, we observed a greater loss in the lower part of the abdominal region, in the suprailiac region and in the thigh. The same occurred to the body circumferences. Resistance values remained unaltered, thus indicating that the total body water content was preserved. We concluded that the significant reduction of body weight was mainly due to the mobilization of the fat tissue, being unrelated to changes in the body water content. In addition, we verified how important it is to associate different methods to assess the change of body weight during breastfeeding.

    Notes: The physico-chemical characteristics of roselle from Malaysia were studied. The parameters analysed included size, weight, pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids, anthocyanin contents, organic acids and sugars. Succinic and oxalic acids were the predominant organic acids found in roselle while glucose was the major sugar present. The present study was also conducted to determine and quantify the most biologically effective natural antioxidants present in roselle. Ascorbic acid, ß-carotene and lycopene, were separated, identified and quantified by HPLC. The amounts of ascorbic acid, ß-carotene and lycopene contents were 141.09mg/100g, 1.88mg/100g and 164.34µg/100g, respectively. The individual anthocyanin in roselle was characterised by TLC and HPLC. Delphinidin-3-sambubioside and cyanidin-3-sambubioside were the main anthocyanin present in roselle.

    Notes: Maize (Zea mays) is an important staple crop in Nigeria, mostly processed into fermented porridges. Describes an attempt to develop a convenience food from fermented maize. Maize was processed into flakes through home level processing of dry-milling, steeping, sieving, cooking and drying. Three fermented products were formulated by varying the proportions of cooked porridge and fermented maize slurry. The moisture, protein, fat, crude fibre, ash and starch content ranges of the products varied. Cooked paste viscosity showed that the sample with highest cooked porridge concentration (75 per cent), CSWC, had the highest starch set back and gelatinisation indices. Ease of cooking for the products ranged between 5-6 min. Sensory qualities revealed that the sample with the least cooked porridge concentration (25 per cent), CSWA, had the least overall acceptability while CSWB and CSWC were as acceptable as Ogi pap in taste, odour and overall acceptability at 5 per cent level of significance.

    Notes: Consumer risk perception plays an important role during periods of food safety concern because it shapes the behaviour of consumers. Multi-dimensional analysis helps to provide a thorough understanding of consumer-perceived risk. A survey of 172 respondents was carried out to investigate the importance of individual loss components and the differences between sociodemographic characteristics regarding microbiological risk in chicken meat. The results suggest that health loss is the most important component followed by psychological, financial, time and taste losses. All these loss components were found to be significantly different between degree and non-degree holders, while long-term health and social losses were different within gender and age groups respectively. The findings in the study of microbiological risk in chicken meat are likely to be applicable to other food safety related risks.

The bond properties of the plywood were evaluated and results show that the glues formulated using resorcinol modified extracts performed better than those modified with cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL).     Notes: Describes the novel utilization of waste newsprint paper as inexpensive agro-fibers for production of lightweight building panels. Thermal gravimetric analysis of treated news paper fibers was studied as a method for testing fire retardancy of agro-fibers in light building panels. The activation energy of degradation stages was evaluated by applying the Coats and Redfern method of analysis. Results showed that the treatment of newsprint waste with 6 per cent sodium silicate also improved fire retardancy in addition to improving the compressive strength of the produced panels, with the reduction in the bulk density to ~28.6 per cent compared with gypsum panel. Such treatment gives the produced panels a relatively low water absorption property compared with those produced by other treatments.

    Notes: Plasma technology is often used in textile industries. The aim of this study is to transpose this technology to wood in order to protect it when used outdoors. First experiments have shown that this kind of treatment can be applied either to bare or finished wood. In this study, different plasma coatings of wood surface to create water repellent characteristics are presented. Treatment parameters were optimised and the surface characteristics of the plasma treated substrates were evaluated and compared. If this treatment is sufficiently resistant to weather it could be applied to wood without any other coatings. If it is not sufficiently resistant, it could be applied to a coated wood to extend the durability of the coating. This kind of deposit may also protect wood against fungi.

    Notes: Four different organic systems, containing either vinyl acetate resins or epoxy resins were applied on steel pretreated specimens exposed to deionized and deaerated water taken from the installations of the Public Greek Electricity Company. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization measurements, dielectric measurements and visual observations after salt spray test were performed for monitoring the changes of the organic systems characteristics at predetermined exposure time in the deionized - deaerated water. All four coating systems found providing protection on steel surfaces. The classification of their performance depends mainly on the composition of the primer, as well as, on the intrinsic characteristics of the other layers. Thus the system consisting of epoxy primer with zinc dust, epoxy high build layer and a two component epoxy paint with iron oxide is the one exhibiting the highest protection efficiency.

    Notes: Many factors affect the print quality and ink transfer. These are either machine factors, paper factors, or Ink factors. The aim of this work was to find out to what extent are the amount of ink transferred influenced by the previously mentioned factors. Atomic absorption was used for quantitatively measuring the amount of ink transferred. Copper phthalocyanine pigment was chosen. The amount of copper detected is taken as an indication of the amount of ink transferred. The results indicated that the amount of ink transferred decreased as the printing speed increased. It was expected to be increased with increasing printing pressure. But It was found that the amount of ink transferred to supercalendered paper decreased with increasing printing pressure. The amount of ink transferred increased as the ink viscosity increased. The type of ink resin was found to have a considerable effect on the amount of ink transferred.

    Notes: The paper followed the effect of associative thickeners on the viscosity profiles of two water-borne binders. The acrylic dispersion and the alkyd emulsion were selected as representative binders for water-borne coatings. The effect of associative thickeners based on the hydrophobically modified ethylene oxide-urethane block copolymer on the binder system of water-borne coatings. The synergic mechanism was confirmed by using the combined types of thickeners and the effect on the rheology of coatings at the phases of their production, storing, and applications.

    Notes: Four different organic systems, containing either vinyl acetate resins or epoxy resins were applied on steel pretreated specimens exposed to deionized and deaerated water taken from the installations of the Public Greek Electricity Company. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization measurements, dielectric measurements and visual observations after salt spray test were performed for monitoring the changes of the organic systems characteristics at predetermined exposure time in the deionized - deaerated water. All four coating systems found providing protection on steel surfaces. The classification of their performance depends mainly on the composition of the primer, as well as, on the intrinsic characteristics of the other layers. Thus the system consisting of epoxy primer with zinc dust, epoxy high build layer and a two component epoxy paint with iron oxide is the one exhibiting the highest protection efficiency.

    Notes: Four pigments derived from the SrO–ZnO–B2O3–P2O5 system were tested in a solvent coating system based on a modified alkyd resin and water-borne system based on a styrene–acrylate dispersion. The pigments pastes were applied on activated steel panels and after conditioning standard corrosion tests were performed comprising the determination of resistance to humid atmospheres containing SO2 and also the resistance to a neutral salt fog. Test results were compared with those performed on the coatings prepared with standard anticorrosion pigments of Zn3(PO4)2.2H2O, Ca(BO2)2, Zn(BO2)2 a Ba(BO2)2. Some tested pigments revealed at least comparable corrosion-inhibition properties with standard pigments. Coatings based on alkyd resins gave better results than those prepared form water-borne system.

    Notes: The paper deals with using lamellar pigments for anticorrosive barrier coatings. By depositing a ferric oxide layer on a muscovite particle a pigment is obtained, which being applied to coatings improves the mechanical properties thereof, resistance to UV radiation and acts as an anticorrosion barrier. The optimum concentration of lamellar surface-treated muscovite in the coatings amounts to 20 vol. %.

    Notes: In this study, titanium white was investigated, covered with aluminium oxide and silica. The titanium white was produced by Chemical Works Police S.A. under the catalogue symbol of R-210. Surface of titanium white was modified with silane coupling agents, such as 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (A-174), vinyltrimethoxysilane (U-611) and N-2-(aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (U-15D). The unmodified and the modified titanium white was subjected to physicochemical analysis. Moreover, tests were performed aiming at defining morphology, surface structure, and dispersion of the particles as related to, first of all, the type of applied modifier. Product evaluation took advantage of modern investigative techniques, including SEM and DLS. Modified and unmodified titanium whites were applied as pigments in acrylic paints. The modified Titanium dioxide in particular improved strength and utility properties of studied paints.

    Notes: Attempt has been made in this study, to utilize castor oil in the preparation of polyesteramide resins. Castor oil was first converted into dehydrated castor oils (DCO) to improve drying characteristics. DCO was then converted into diethanolamide {(N, N- bis hydroxethyl) castor oil amide} of mixed fatty acids using 0.5 per cent sodium methoxide as a catalyst and converted to polyesteramide resins after reacting with various dibasic acids such as phthalic anhydride, sebacic, succinic and adipic acids in presence of xylene as azeotropic solvent. The resins obtained were then analysed for its physico-chemical, film performance properties and resistance to various chemicals.

    Notes: Nanocrystalline cobalt spinels were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions, starting from metal chlorides. The color properties in these systems mainly depend upon the preparative method and cation distributions, which have been determined by X-ray powder diffraction using Rietveld refinements and visible near infrared absorption spectra. We observe the influence of tetrahedral and octahedral preference of cations such as Co2+, Cr3+, Mn3+ upon the formation and the color development of cobalt spinel pigments. All the samples prepared revealed the formation of single spinel with particle size at about 0.8-2.1?µm; CoAl2O4 reveals king's blue, CoMn2O4 dark blue and CoCr2O4 bluish green. Cobalt blues developed giving deep absorption characteristic of tetrahedral Co2+ ions at about 550-680?nm; therefore, color changed from king's blue to bluish green in CoCr2O4, showing the absorption band of octahedral Cr3+ ions owing to the large excess octahedral crystal field stabilization energy.

    Notes: Cu(II) complexes with some hydroxy azo compounds derived from thiazole and benzothiazole have been synthesized. The structures of the complexes are inferred from data of elemental analysis, electronic, IR and H1 NMR spectra. It is found that the Cu(II) coordinated to ligands through the nitrogen atom of azo group and hetero ring. This coordination lead to lower the energy of CT transition of ligands. The effect of molecular structure of the ligands and nature of the metal ion on complex formation are also examined. The free energy and stability constant of complexes formed in solution have been determined spectrophotometrically. Thiazole azo dyes were found to behave as an inhibitor with respect to the corrosion of copper in acidic solutions.

    Notes: The paper studies the effect of modification of zinc orthophosphate on the anticorrosion efficiency thereof in organic coating. The zinc orthophosphate dihydrate and tetrahydrate and the reaction of phosphate anion with hydroxyl binder groups are compared. The highest anticorrosion efficiency is reached with pigments which are modified by organic corrosion inhibitors. The highly water soluble phosphate pigments reduce the anticorrosion coating properties. The effect of cation in phosphate pigments on the corrosion inhibition was confirmed.
