Notizen: Abstract Photoluminescence spectra of interwell excitons in double GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells (n-i-n structures) have been investigated (an interwell exciton in these systems is an electron-hole pair spatially separated by a narrow AlAs barrier). Under resonance excitation by circularly polarized light, the luminescence line of interwell excitons exhibits a significant narrowing and a drastic increase in the degree of circular polarization of photoluminescence with increasing exciton concentration. It is found that the radiative recombination rate significantly increases under these conditions. This phenomenon is observed at temperatures lower than the critical point and can be interpreted in terms of the collective behavior of interwell excitons.

Notizen: Abstract The two-electron dynamics in a symmetric double quantum dot placed in a onstant electric field is considered. It is shown that, despite the Coulomb blockade, interdot electron-density oscillations are possible. In these oscillations, a charge equal to the charge of a single electron is periodically transferred from one quantum dot to the other.

Notizen: Abstract Screening of excitonic states by a system of 2D electrons (or holes) in GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum wells is studied. With increasing concentration of 2D charge carriers, a threshold-type disappearance of excitonic states is observed in both luminescence and reflectance spectra. The higher the quality of the 2D system, the lower the corresponding threshold concentration. In the best systems, the collapse of excitonic states occurs at unexpectedly low electron densities n e =5×109 cm−2, which correspond to the mean dimensionless distance between the particles r s =8. This value far exceeds the threshold values observed for 3D systems (r s ≈2), as well as the values obtained for quantum wells in previous studies. The problem of measuring the concentration of low-density 2D charge carriers in photoexcitation conditions is solved by applying the method of optical detection of the dimensional magnetoplasma resonance. This method provides reliable measurements of the density of a 2D system to the values about 109 cm−2.

Notizen: Abstract A new class of collective states, which are assumed to be due to the spontaneous formation of a charge density wave (“striped” phase) upon filling high Landau levels, was recently observed in a 2D electron system based on GaAs/AlGaAs(001). The following unsolved problem is considered in the work: what is the reason for stripe pinning along the crystallographic direction [110]? It is shown that the effective mass of 2D electrons is anisotropic for a single heterojunction (001) A 3 B 5. This natural anisotropy is due to the C 2v symmetry of the heterointerface and, even being weak (0.1%), can govern the stripe direction. A magnetic field parallel to the interface induces “magnetic” anisotropy of effective mass. The competition of these two types of anisotropy (natural and magnetic) provides a quantitative description of the experiment.

Notizen: Abstract We studied a biased superlattice and revealed a considerable current response to irradiation by non-equilibrium acoustic phonons with an effective temperature on the order of a few Kelvins. We discuss two phonon source-superlattice configurations, for which the current response is caused by either interwell or intrawell electron transitions. We have shown that the response is sensitive to both direction and spectral distribution of phonons. The results explain recent experiments on the phonon-induced current response and prove that the superlattices can be used for the characterization of a high-frequency phonon flux.

Notizen: Abstract The luminescence spectra of GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells (QWs) with low-density quasi-two-dimensional electron and hole channels were studied. It was demonstrated that, at temperatures below some critical value (T c ∼30 K) and for an excitation power lying in a certain temperature-dependent range, two metastable charge states with two-dimensional charge densities differing in both magnitude and sign can occur in the system under the same conditions. The obtained experimental data agree well with the mathematical model allowing for the transfer of photoexcited carriers to the barrier followed by their tunneling into QW.

Notizen: Abstract Anomalous intensity fluctuations are observed in the spectrum of radiative ecombination of quasi-two-dimensional (2D) electrons with photoexcited holes in a single quantum well. The fluctuations are observed exclusively under the conditions of the quantum Hall effect (QHE). It is shown that, if the QHE conditions are not fulfilled, the radiation intensity fluctuates strictly following the Poisson distribution 〈δN 2〉/〈N〉= 1), whereas in the QHE regime the fluctuation amplitude increases by several orders of magnitude (〈δ N 2〉/〈N〉∼102). It is demonstrated that the maxima of the emission noise amplitude coincide with the maxima of inverse magnetoresistance of 2D electrons in the QHE regime and correspond to establishing an anomalously high uniformity of the system.

Notizen: Abstract Dimensional magnetoplasma resonance is observed and studied in a spatially confined, two-dimensional hole system in (001) GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum wells. From the analysis of the field dependence of the magnetoplasma resonance on the diameter of the 2D system, the semiclassical cyclotron hole mass is determined. Its value is found to be equal to 0.26m 0 (m 0 is the free electron mass), which considerably exceeds the theoretically predicted value. A method is proposed for a direct determination of the concentration and mobility of 2D holes from the analysis of the magnetoplasma resonance.

Notizen: Abstract We developed the theory of Coulomb drag current induced in a one-dimensional nanowire by the ballistic nonohmic current in a nearby parallel nanowire under the ballistic transport regime. As in the ohmic case, we predict sharp oscillations of the drag current as a function of gate voltage or chemical potential of electrons. We also study the dependence of drag current on the voltage V across the driving wire. For relatively large values of V, the drag current is proportional to V 2.

Notizen: Abstract For a ballistic ring interferometer based on high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas in an AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction, the electrostatic potential and the energy spectrum are determined. It is shown that the splitting points in such an interferometer have the form of triangular potential wells. Calculation is performed for the two-dimensional electron transmission through the ring, and the Fano resonances caused by the coupling of the transmitted waves with the levels of higher transverse modes in triangular wells are predicted. These resonances are observed in the experiment.

Notizen: Abstract Interaction of two localized impurity states of Si atoms at a GaAs surface was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The effects of a twofold “switching” on and off of the states of each of the interacting atoms, the tunneling-interaction-induced mutual level pulling of these states, and the level stabilization near E F were observed. These effects are explained in terms of the extended Anderson model.

It is shown that the strain distributions in nanotubes (structures with coherently bounded rolls) and nanoscrolls are essentially different, resulting in different energy spectra of the charge carriers. Notizen: Abstract Nonlinear interaction of an intense surface acoustic wave (SAW) with a 2D electron-hole plasma generated by light in a semiconductor quantum well near a piezoelectric crystal is investigated. It is shown that, in a strongly nonlinear regime, the acoustoelectric interaction is enhanced because of the accumulation of carriers in the field of an intense SAW. In addition, in a strongly nonlinear regime, the dissipation of the acoustic wave energy increases and the sound velocity decreases. These dependences fundamentally differ from those observed in a unipolar plasma. For high sound intensities, analytical results are obtained.

Notizen: Abstract  The different Fe2+ lattice sites in iron-rich chlorites have been characterized by Mössbauer spectroscopy and molecular orbital calculations in local density approximation. The Mössbauer measurements were recorded at 77 K within a small velocity range (±3.5 mm s−1) to provide high energy resolution. Additionally, measurements were recorded in a wider velocity range (±10.5 mm s−1) at temperatures of 140, 200, and 250 K in an applied field (7 T) parallel to the γ-beam. The zero-field spectra were analyzed with discrete Lorentzian-shaped quadrupole doublets to account for the Fe2+ sites M1, M2, and M3 and with a quadrupole distribution for Fe3+ sites. Such a procedure is justified by the results obtained from MO calculations, which reveal that different anion (OH−) distributions in the first coordination sphere of M1, M2, and M3 positions have more influence on the Fe2+ quadrupole splitting than cationic disorder. The spectra recorded in applied field were analyzed in the spin-Hamiltonian approximation, yielding a negative sign for the electric field gradient (efg) of Fe2+ in the M1, M2, and M3 positions. The results of the MO calculations are in quantitative agreement with experiment and reveal that differences in the quadrupole splittings (ΔE Q ), their temperature dependence and in the isomer shifts (δ) of Fe2+ in M1, M2, and M3 positions can theoretically by justified. Therefore, the combined Mössbauer and MO investigation shows that the three Fe2+ lattice sites in the chlorites investigated here can be discriminated according to their ΔE Q -δ parameter pairs. With the calculated average iron-oxygen bond strength, the MO study provides an explanation for the observed trend that the population of the three lattice sites by Fe2+ increases according to the relation M1 〈 M2 〈 M3.

Notizen: Abstract Using Mössbauer spectroscopy as a function of ball milling time, it was found that nanomagnetite behaves differently than magnetite during mechanochemical activation. The phase sequence is determined by the original particle size of the powder. Magnetite suffers a phase transformation to hematite, while nanomagnetite (d = 19 nm) gives rise to superparamagnetism as effect of prolonged milling.

Notizen: Abstract  Natural barbosalite Fe2+Fe3+ 2 (PO4)2(OH)2 from Bull Moose Mine, South Dakota, U.S.A., having ideal composition, was investigated with single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques, Mössbauer spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry to redetermine crystal structure, valence state of iron and evolution of 57Fe Mössbauer parameter and to propose the magnetic structure at low temperatures. At 298 K the title compound is monoclinic, space group P21/n, a o  = 7.3294(16) Å, b o  = 7.4921(17) Å, c o  = 7.4148 (18) Å, β = 118.43(3)°, Z = 2. No crystallographic phase transition was observed between 298 K and 110 K. Slight discontinuities in the temperature dependence of lattice parameters and bond angles in the range between 150 K and 180 K are ascribed to the magnetic phase transition of the title compound. At 298 K the Mössbauer spectrum of the barbosalite shows two paramagnetic components, typical for Fe2+ and Fe3+ in octahedral coordination; the area ratio Fe3+/Fe2+ is exactly two, corresponding to the ideal value. Both the Fe2+ and the Fe3+ sublattice order magnetically below 173 K and exhibit a fully developed magnetic pattern at 160 K. The electric field gradient at the Fe2+ site is distorted from axial symmetry with the direction of the magnetic field nearly perpendicular to Vzz, the main component of the electric field gradient. The temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility exhibits strong antiferromagnetic ordering within the corner-sharing Fe3+-chains parallel to [101], whereas ferromagnetic coupling is assumed within the face-sharing [1 1 0] and [−1 1 0] Fe3+-Fe2+-Fe3+ trimer, connecting the Fe3+-chains to each other.

Notizen: Abstract Some experimental results in the case of anisotropic media are at variance with the Einstein-Stokes formula of Brownian motion and the Singwi-Sjölander model. The disagreement comes from the anchor effect. The concept of “pseudoparticle” is introduced in order to retain the Singwi-Sjölander formalism. Mössbauer spectroscopy can be used to estimate the thickness of the anchored liquid-crystalline molecular textures forming on the surface of Brownian particles.

Notizen: Abstract 57Fe Mössbauer spectra were measured of reaction products formed during an incubation experiment with sulfate-reducing bacteria, which were isolated from estuarine sediments of the Tama River in Tokyo. The spectrum of the product incubated for several days showed some overlapping sextets. This product had a different chemical form from amorphous iron monosulfide produced by inorganic reaction between ferrous and sulfide ions. It was estimated that the structure of nearest neighbor of iron in this product was similar to that of pyrrhotite (Fe1−x S). After several months of incubation, other singlet and doublet appeared successively on the spectrum, corresponding to mackinawite (FeS1−x ) and new sulfide, respectively. Both values of isomer shift and quadrupole splitting of new sulfide increased with increasing incubation time and approached those of pyrite (FeS2). Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) showed that iron atoms were coordinated by sulfur in the incubation product.

Notizen: Abstract The 57Fe Mössbauer spectra recorded in situ from tin-doped Fe3O4 at elevated temperature in vacuo shows the Curie temperature to decrease with increasing concentrations of the dopant. Thermal treatment under oxidising conditions results in the initial formation of tin-doped γ-Fe2O3 which subsequently undergoes a phase transformation to tin-doped α-Fe2O3. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy at elevated temperatures shows the Néel temperature for tin-doped γ-Fe2O3 to be lower than that of pure γ-Fe2O3. The 119Sn Mössbauer spectra recorded from all the tin-doped iron oxides show the presence of a hyperfine magnetic field at the Sn4+ site which is more complex in the spectra recorded from tin-doped γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3.

Notizen: Abstract The selective reduction in H2 of oxide solid solutions produces nanocomposite powders in which transition metal nanoparticles are dispersed inside and on the surface of the oxide matrix grains. When using a H2/CH4 reducing atmosphere, the metal nanoparticles that form on the surface of the oxide grains act as catalysts for the CH4 decomposition and, because of their small size at high temperatures (〉800○C), favor the in-situ nucleation and growth of single-wall and thin multiwall carbon nanotubes. This article reviews our results on the synthesis and characterization of M-MgAl2O4 (M=Fe, Fe/Co, Fe/Ni) nanocomposite powders, without and with carbon nanotubes, emphasizing the information that can be derived from Mössbauer spectroscopy as a complement to other characterization techniques.

Notizen: Abstract The alloying of Fe with T=V, Cr and Mn by high-energy ball milling of elemental powder mixtures has been studied from the scale of a powder particle down to the atomic scale using X-ray and neutron diffraction, Mössbauer spectrometry and magnetic measurements for Fe1−x T x alloys with x=0.50, 0.65 for T=V, x=0.50, 0.70 for T=Cr and x=0.72 for T=Mn. Different alloying behaviours are observed according to T once powder particles have the final composition. The rather fast mechanical alloying of Fe with Mn reflects the statistical nature of the milling process in contrast to the slow mixing of Fe with V and of Fe with Cr. Hyperfine magnetic field distributions remain stationary in shape in the last milling stage at room temperature both for T=V and T=Cr. Magnetic measurements evidence the persistence with milling time of a large population of nanometer-sized Fe-Cr zones that are superparamagnetic at room temperature and at 400 K. By contrast, room-temperature Mössbauer spectra show only a single line for long milling times. The unmixed stationary state of milled p-Fe0.7Cr0.3 is discussed in the light of a recent model of systems driven by competing dynamics.

Notizen: Abstract Combining the methods of Mössbauer spectroscopy, synchrotron XRD, and resistivity and using diamond-anvil cells enables the discovery and studies of new phenomena in magnetism and electronic correlation at high density. It is shown that Hund's rule concerning the high-spin state in TM-compounds does not hold in this regime resulting in spin-crossover and collapse of the magnetic state for even-valence TM ions and for the decline of magnetic exchange in the odd-valence species. This mechanism competes with the breakdown of the d–d electron correlation (Mott transition) in transforming the Mott insulators into normal metals. The experimental issues are described and examples of magnetic studies at very high-pressures are portrayed.

Notizen: Abstract A set of samples of Fe/MgO, in the concentration range between 1.5 and 9 wt% of Fe, was prepared by the impregnation method and then calcined at 1073 K. All of them were characterized by XRD and Raman and Mössbauer spectroscopies. The data obtained show that the solids are made up of MgFeO4 nanoclusters and Fe3+ ions dispersed in the MgO matrix. The size of the clusters and the amounts of each phase were calculated using the XRD and Mössbauer data.

Notizen: Abstract 57Fe Mössbauer spectra of iron overloaded human spleen, rat spleen and rat liver tissue samples at 78 K were found to consist of a quadrupole doublet (major component) with magnetic sextet (minor component with fractional spectral area F s). The distributions of F s for spleen tissue from two different clinically identifiable groups (n = 7 and n = 12) of thalassemic patients were found to be significantly different. The value of F s for dietary-iron loaded rat liver was found to rise significantly with age/duration (up to 24 months) of iron loading.
