    Notizen: Abstract Carbocationic polymerization of N-ortho/meta/para tolyl-exo-norbornene dicarboximide (nadimide) was carried out using Pd(II) catalyst. Under similar conditions of polymerization, poly(N-m-tolyl nadimide) showed higher molecular mass compared to poly(N-p-tolyl nadimide) and poly(N-o-tolyl nadimide). Thermal stability of these polymers was evaluated by dynamic thermogravimetry in nitrogen atmosphere. The polymers were stable up to 460°C and lost mass above this temperature in a single step. The characteristic decomposition temperature and char yield of these polymers were higher than the polymers prepared by using ring opening metathesis polymerization. The difference has been attributed to the presence of rigid bicyclic ring structure in these polymers.

    Notizen: Abstract The thermal stability of the solid solutions of Fe2Mo1–xTixO4 for x=0.0 to 1.0 in air, had been investigated in the temperature range 303–1173 K using differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry (DTA and TG). The products obtained by heating the sample in air, at different temperatures, have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and IR-studies. The results show that all the ferrite samples undergo surface oxidation during initial heating. On heating to 823 K, the samples undergo oxidation of the octahedral site cations only and forma cation deficient spinel phase. On further heating in air, the ferrites undergo complete oxidation.

    Notizen: Abstract The development of equipment for thermal analysis has opened up new areas for applications in science, industrial practice and environment studies. On the basis of the literature and information from equipment producers, the directions for the use of thermal analysis in research and practice are classified. Special attention is paid to the possibilities of controlling environmental pollution, and the stability and other properties of intermediate and final industrial products. It is stressed that DSC and DTA systems can be successfully applied to determine enthalpy changes in raw materials and products as control tests for their application. The advantages of coupled thermal systems for complex studies and the control of raw materials, products and wastes are described.

    Notizen: Abstract Cyanazine was taken as an example for investigations under the influence of different conditions on thermal decomposition of triazine herbicides. DSC measurements were carried out under atmospheric pressure and hermetically closed, under pressure 1.3 kPa. The influence of the pressure on the constant reaction rate of decomposition of cyanazine was discussed. It was also proved that the predicted reaction constant rates from isothermal and non-isothermal measurements are consistent.

    Notizen: Abstract Thermogravimetry was employed to study the changes occurring in rubber vulcanizates during devulcanization carried out by microwave treatment, a new promising method of recycling rubber waste. The thermogravimetric parameters T i , T 5 and T p and the compositions of devulcanizates in comparison with vulcanizates were determined. The results obtained allowed estimation of the degree of destruction of the polymer chains in response to microwave treatment and permitted establishment of the most advantageous conditions of devulcanization in order to obtain the best properties of rubber devulcanizates for reuse in rubber processing. The results demonstrated that thermogravimetry is a very useful method for investigation and control of the microwave devulcanization process.

    Notizen: Abstract Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry were used to examine the thermal behaviour of the multimonomers poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl methacrylate) and poly(2-acryloyloxyethyl methacrylate), of the ladder polymers prepared by the template polymerization of these multimonomers, and of a linear analogue of the ladder polymers, poly(2-butyrylethyl methacrylate). The results obtained show that only one of the ladder polymers has a considerably higher thermal stability than that of their linear analogue.

    Notizen: Abstract The thermal decompositions of a series of simple lithium compounds (carbonate, sulfate, acetate, citrates, aspartates and glutamates) currently used in the treatment of manic-depressive psychosis and related disorders were investigated by means of TG and DTA measurements in oxygen atmosphere. Pyrolysis residues were characterized by infrared spectroscopy. The stabilities of the hydrates and intermediate phases generated during the degradation processes are discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract The possibility to use thermal analysis for a quick characterisation of chemical changes in the organic matter of composted materials was tested. Nine samples were taken at progressive stages of maturation from the same trench of a fully automated composting plant. DSC and TG were simultaneously performed in static air conditions on whole ground composts. Progressive stages in the composting process yielded samples whose DSC traces revealed appreciable modifications in thermal patterns that agreed well with quantitative data obtained from TG measurements. The ratio between the mass losses associated with the two main exothermic reactions (R1) showed a good sensitivity in detecting the changes in the level of stabilisation during the composting process. Thermal methods seem to be a valid comparative method in evaluating the level of bio-transformation of materials during a composting process.

    Notizen: Abstract Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) was used in this work to study the degradation kinetics of industrial PVC plastisols. In order to model the pyrolitic degradation of plastisols in nitrogen, a kinetic model based on phenomenological considerations was developed. Two different processes were observed during the first degradation stage. The model parameters, such as activation energies and pseudo orders of reaction, were calculated using a non-linear regression analysis. The model developed was able to describe the degradation behaviour both in isothermal and in dynamic modes. The results of such analysis were applied to obtain long-term data from short-term experiments as an engineering approach to evaluate the thermal resistance of plastisols.
