    Beschreibung: Fine-scale dating is crucial to understanding the growth and environments of formation of marine manganese deposits. The paleomagnetic method of dating of manganese nodules and crusts has been attempted but with no success so far. We measured remanent magnetization (RM) on up to 75-mm-thick hydrogenetic crusts at intervals of 2.5 mm after mineralogical and chemical examination, careful separation, and alternative field demagnetization. Stable sharp RM and well-correlated polarity-change patterns between four samples made it possible to identify the Pliocene-Quaternary magnetic chrons in them. These data show that the three crusts have grown continuously at rates of 14-17 mm/m.y. since the Early Pliocene. This is three or four times faster than those for Central Pacific seamount hydrogenetic crusts. Estimates of growth rate based on determination of Co-flux are within this range. Magnetostratigraphy therefore appears to be a powerful method for dating hydrogenetic manganese crusts when supported by conventional dating methods. These results encourage finer-scale investigations which promise more detailed paleoceanographic reconstruction.

    Beschreibung: The Cretaceous Heterohelix moremani (Cushman) was the only biserial planktonic foraminiferal species from its first appearance in the late Albian up to the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary. Within that time, it increased gradually in abundance relative to other planktonic foraminifera in five Circum-North Atlantic sections. It is generally rare in upper Albian sediments, common in most of the Cenomanian and very abundant in sediments representing the latest Cenomanian Oceanic Anoxic Event. Short-term variations on the overall abundance trend correlate with positive excursions in the bulk carbonate delta13C record. Maximum rain rates of H. moremani during OAE2 show that this species was an opportunist that did well in extreme conditions, but its overall distribution indicates that it is not necessarily a marker for very high palaeoproductivity environments. Stable oxygen and carbon isotope measurements on foraminiferal species indicate that H. moremani was a surface water dweller at least in part of its geographic range, but incorporated 13C out of equilibrium with ambient seawater. It is depleted in delta13C relative to other planktonic foraminifera, which is attributed to vital effects related to its opportunistic character.

    Beschreibung: Vertical profiles of light scattering at a right angle and turbidity profiles in seawater indicating suspended matter concentration in the near-bottom nepheloid layer (NNL) were measured simultaneously with temperature, salinity, and density profiles at the continental slope off the northwestern Africa. About 100 stations 5' apart in latitude and longitude were carried out over an ocean area of 6100 sq. km. Special features of the NNL variability in the area were analyzed. It was found that some structural parameters of the NNL (maximum transparency depth, that is the upper boundary of NNL; NNL thickness; maximum and total turbidity) correlate with ocean depth. On the average, thickness of the NNL in the area is 20-40% of the ocean depth. At most stations the NNL is fairly strong. In the shelf region NNL turbidity was influenced by the intensive near-shore upwelling. Formation of ''high-energy near-bottom layers'' in the shelf region resulted from passing of a mesoscale cyclonic eddy that caused redistribution of measured quantities within the entire water column.

    Beschreibung: Rare earth element concentrations in ferromanganese concretions sampled from Slupsk Furrow in the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone are similar to those of concretions from the Gulf of Bothnia. The lack of positive Ce anomalies in the concretions from Slupsk Furrow indicates that they are formed under less oxidizing conditions than spheroidal concretions from the Gulf of Bothnia. Mossbauer studies indicate that poorly crystalline lepidocrosite is the principal iron oxyhydroxide mineral present in these concretions.

    Beschreibung: The analysis of foraminifera from the Miocene section of the CRP-1 drillhole (Ross Sea, Antarctica) revealed the presence of poor to moderate rich and diversified assemblages. The absence of planktonic foraminifers and of valuable stratigraphic makers within the benthic foraminiferal assemblages, did not allow a definite stratigraphic assignment of the studie interval. However, the assemblage are quite compareable to late Oligocene-early Miocene faunas previously described from other sites in the Ross Sea and adjacent regions and are interpreted as indicative of a shallow-water depositional setting.

    Beschreibung: During the course of the 1997 drilling campaign, lithostratigraphic boundaries were assigned to the CRP-l core on the basis of perceived changes in lithology. The geologically most important boundary in the core, between the Miocene and overlying Quaternary sections, was placed at 43.55 mbsf. This horizon was described in the core logs (Cape Roberts Science Team, 1998) as a contact between muddy, finegrained sandstone (which were assigned a Lower Miocene age based on diatom biostratigsaphy) and overlying diamictons containing Quaternary diatoms. This boundary is a major unconformity, recognisable on seismic reflection records. As such, it has considerable significance in the ongoing scientific analysis of the drillcore. During a re-examination of the core, focusing on the archive half held at the Antarctic Geology Research Facility of the Florida State University at Tallahassee; the authors noted that the core across the published boundary (43.55 mbsf) did not show any lithological change, but logged a sharp contact between dark olive grey, muddy sandstone and overlying diamicton at 43.15 mbsf (Fig. l). We suggest, therefore, that the core log in appendix l of Cape Roberts Science Team (1998) is misleading over this interval. In order to test the veracity of the suggested boundary revision, a series of thin-sections was examined and point-counted for framework grain abundances.

    Beschreibung: The distribution of Li isotopes in pore waters to a depth of 1157 m below seafloor is presented for ODP Sites 918 and 919 in the Irminger Basin, offshore Greenland. Lithium isotope data are accompanied by strontium isotope ratios to decipher diagenetic reactions in the sediments which are characterized by the pervasive presence of volcanic material, as well as by very high accumulation rates in the upper section. The lowering of the 87Sr/86Sr ratio below contemporaneous seawater values indicates several zones of volcanic material alteration. The Li isotope profiles are complex suggesting a variety of exchange reactions with the solid phases. These include cation exchange with NH4+ and mobilization from sediments at depth, in addition to the alteration of volcanic matter. Lithium isotopes are, therefore, a sensitive indicator of sediment-water interaction. d6Li values of pore waters at these two sites vary between -42 and -25‰. At shallow depths (〈100 mbsf), rapid decreases in the Li concentration, accompanied by a shift to heavier isotopic compositions, indicate uptake of Li into alteration products. A positive anomaly of d6Li observed at both sites is coincident with the NH4+ maximum produced by organic matter decomposition and may be related to ion exchange of Li from the sediments by NH4+. In the lower sediment column at Site 918, dissolved Li increases with depth and is characterized by enrichment of 6Li. The Li isotopic compositions of both the waters and the solid phase suggest that the enrichment of Li in deep interstitial waters is a result of release from pelagic sediments. The significance of sediment diagenesis and adsorption as sinks of oceanic Li is evaluated. The maximum diffusive flux into the sediment due to volcanic matter alteration can be no more than 5% of the combined inputs from rivers and submarine hydrothermal solutions. Adsorption on to sediments can only account for 5-10% of the total inputs from rivers and submarine hot springs.

    Beschreibung: We have determined the helium abundance and isotopic composition of seafloor carbonate sediments from the flanks of the Ontong Java Plateau, western equatorial Pacific Ocean (ODP Site 806). These results provide a two million year record of the burial flux of extraterrestrial 3He, which we believe is a proxy for the terrestrial accretion rate of interplanetary dust particles. The 3He burial flux prior to ~700 ka was relatively low, ~0.5 pcc/cm**2/kyr, but from 700 ka to the present, the burial flux gradually increased to a value of ~1.0 pcc/cm**2/kyr. 100 kyr periodicity in the 3He burial flux is apparent over the last 700 kyr and correlates with the oxygen isotope record of global climate, with high 3He burial fluxes associated with interglacial periods. This periodicity and phase are consistent with previous 3He measurements in North Atlantic sediments. Although 100 kyr periodicity in 3He burial flux is in agreement with recent predictions of the accretion rate of interplanetary dust based on a model of the orbital evolution of asteroidal debris, the measurements and predictions differ by one half cycle in phase. Nevertheless, our observations suggest the terrestrial accretion rate of interplanetary dust is controlled by orbital eccentricity and/or inclination relative to the solar-system invariable plane. Such control is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the hypothesis of that variations in extraterrestrial dust accretion modulates terrestrial climate with a 100 kyr period. We also identify several brief (〈25 kyr) intervals of strongly enhanced 3He burial, possibly related to random and transient fluctuations in the accretion rate of asteroidal or cometary dust particles.

    Beschreibung: Site 958 was drilled to monitor the late Neogene history of both continental aridity in northwestern Africa and the Canary Current distant from nearshore upwelling. Based on magnetostratigraphy, biostratigraphic datums, variations in carbonate, coarse fraction components, and the species composition of planktonic foraminifers, as well as using the d18O records of Globigerinoides ruber (white), we established a splice between Holes 958A and 958B and a stratigraphic age scale deciphering Milankovitch cycles. Over the last 630 k.y., sedimentation rates amount to 2.9 cm/k.y., and to 2.05-2.53 cm/k.y. back to the base of the Pleistocene. Extremely low rates of 0.4 cm/k.y. and a reworking of fossils mark the late Pliocene. The first continuous, long, sea-surface temperature (SST) record from the center of the Canary Current, which is based on foraminifer species census data, depicts a general temperature decrease in the late Pliocene, lower SST and high seasonalities of up to 6°C ~2.0-1.6 Ma, a warmer interval from 1.6 Ma to ~0.85 Ma, again lower SST and higher seasonalities until 0.33 or 0.26 Ma, and a final warmer interval, lasting until at least 50 ka, possibly reflecting the attenuated dynamics of the Canary Current. Especially over the last 400 k.y., since Stage 11, glacial stages are hardly reflected by cold SST cycles, except for various abrupt and extremely short cooling events amounting to D6°C, which possibly result from North Atlantic Heinrich events. Similar, but not necessarily synchronous, events of short-term, extremely high values occur in the paleoproductivity and (d13Cbased) paleonutrient records, which indicate a generally low primary production averaging to 180 g C m**-2 yr**-1 at 50-330 ka and about 300 g C m**-2 yr**-1 back to the base of the Pleistocene. Near 1.2-1.6 Ma, the grain-size and magnetic susceptibility records document a significant increase in the discharge of south Saharan/Sahelian dust, possibly linked to increasing aridity.

    Beschreibung: A controversy currently exists regarding the number of Toba eruptive events represented in the tephra occurrences across peninsular India. Some claim the presence of a single bed, the 75,000-yr-old Toba tephra; others argue that dating and archaeological evidence suggest the presence of earlier Toba tephra. Resolution of this issue was sought through detailed geochemical analyses of a comprehensive suite of samples, allowing comparison of the Indian samples to those from the Toba caldera in northern Sumatra, Malaysia, and, importantly, the sedimentary core at ODP Site 758 in the Indian Ocean - a core that contains several of the earlier Toba tephra beds. In addition, two samples of Toba tephra from western India were dated by the fission-track method. The results unequivocally demonstrate that all the presently known Toba tephra occurrences in peninsular India belong to the 75,000 yr B.P. Toba eruption. Hence, this tephra bed can be used as an effective tool in the correlation and dating of late Quaternary sedimentary sequences across India and it can no longer be used in support of a middle Pleistocene age for associated Acheulian artifacts.

    Beschreibung: A newly constructed record of eolian dust accumulation from the central North Pacific shows that dust deposition increased by an order of magnitude quite rapidly at 3.6 Ma. We associate this sudden drying with the uplift of at least the northern portion of the Tibetan Plateau, shutting off the Indian Ocean moisture source to central and western China. This ten-fold increase in atmospheric dust loading appears to be associated with the 1-m.y.-long shift toward heavy d18O values that occurred at 3.6-2.6 Ma. The dust grain-size record of wind intensity begins its late Cenozoic coarsening a million years before the drying event, at ~4.5 Ma. The northern hemisphere cooling that results in intensification of the subpolar westerly winds may have as its ultimate cause the drawdown of atmospheric CO2 in the latest Miocene and the early Pliocene closing of the Panamanian Seaway.
