Beschreibung: Abstract: The dynamic of groundwater systems feeding several springs of the Sibillini Mountains was deeply affected by nine Mw 5.0÷6.5 seismic events occurred in central Italy starting from August 2016. The strongest shock occurred on October 30th 2016 about 5 km NNE of Norcia Town, 9 km below the surface, as a result of upper crust normal faulting on the nearly 30 km-long Mt Vettore - Mt Bove fault system, a NW-SE trending, SW-dipping fault system outcropping on the western slope of Mt Vettore, the highest peak of Sibillini Mountains. Soon after this event, a general increase of springs and rivers discharge and groundwater levels was observed both in the Visso and Norcia areas, west of the Sibillini Mountains. In the Visso area the hydrogeological changes due to the seismic sequence exhausted in the 2019, while nowadays both discharges and groundwater levels are still higher than before in the Norcia area. Discharge data of the main springs located east, south-east of the Sibillini Mountains were analysed to verify whether the general increase observed on the western side was associated to a decrease on the eastern and southern-east area. The results show that the springs located on the eastern side and southern-east side of Mt Vettore experienced a significant long-term discharge decrease. In this preliminary work, the analysis of the historical discharge series of the Pescara di Arquata spring (SE of Mt Vettore), and its relationship with the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) shows that the very low discharge values recorded during the post-seismic period are not associated with SPI as low as documented in the past for similar discharges. Moreover, the stable isotopic composition of Pescara di Arquata water during the post-earthquake period is slightly different from that measured before the seismic events; this suggests that a lower amount of water having more enriched isotopic δ18O content reaches the spring after the seismic sequence. These aspects seem to indicate that groundwater circulation in the southern-east area of Sibillini Mountains has been affected by the 2016-2017 seismic sequence

Beschreibung: The dynamic cone penetration test (DPT) developed in China has been correlated with liquefaction resistance of gravelly soils based on field performance data from theMw7.9Wenchuan earthquake. With a diameter of 74 mm, DPT would be less sensitive to gravel size particles than the SPT or CPT and could be a viable assessment tool depending on gravel size and percentage. In this study, liquefaction resistance is evaluated using four DPT soundings with two hammer energies and shear wave velocity (VS) measurements in Avasinis, Italy, where gravelly sand liquefied in the 1976 Friuli, Italy, earthquake. The DPT correctly predicted liquefaction at three sites where liquefaction was observed; however, it also predicted liquefaction in a highly stratified silt and silty gravel profile where ejecta was not observed. This failure appears to be a result of the “system response” of the profile, which impeded ejecta as identified at similar stratified sites in New Zealand. VS1-based triggering curves often predicted no liquefaction at sites where liquefaction was observed, suggesting that the boundary curves may need to shift to the right for gravelly soils. Standard SPT energy corrections were found to be reasonable for the DPT.

Beschreibung: Southwestern Sicily is an area of infrequent seismic activity; however, some studies carried out in the archaeological Selinunte site suggest that, between the fourth century BC and the early Middle Ages, probably at least two earthquakes strucked this area with enough energy to damage and cause the collapse and kinematics of much of the architecture of Selinunte. Take into account that, in 2008, a noninvasive archaeological prospection and traditional data gathering methods along the Acropolis north fortifications were carried out. Following these first studies, after about 10 years, a new geophysical campaign was carried out. This second campaign benefited from the application of modern technologies for the acquisition and processing of the point cloud data on the northern part of the Acropolis, like terrestrial laser scanning and unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry. In this paper, we present the application of these techniques and a strategy for their integration for the 3D modelling of buildings and cultural heritages. We show how the integration of data acquired independently by these two techniques is an added value able to overcome the intrinsic limits of the individual techniques. The application to Selinunte's Acropolis allowed it to highlight and measure with high accuracy fractures, dislocation, inclinations of walls, depressions of some areas and other interesting observations, which may be important starting points for future investigations.

Beschreibung: Gases present in the Earth crust are important in various branches of human activities. Hydrocarbons are a significant energy resource, helium is applied in many high-tech instruments, and studies of crustal gas dynamics provide insight in the geodynamic processes and help monitor seismic and volcanic hazards. Quantitative analysis of methane and CO2 migration is important for climate change studies. Some of them are toxic (H2S, CO2, CO); radon is responsible for the major part of human radiation dose. The development of analytical techniques in gas geochemistry creates opportunities of applying this science in numerous fields. Noble gases, hydrocarbons, CO2, N2, H2, CO, and Hg vapor are measured by advanced methods in various environments and matrices including fluid inclusions. Following the “Geochemical Applications of Noble Gases”(2009), “Frontiers in Gas Geochemistry” (2013), and “Progress in the Application of Gas Geochemistry to Geothermal, Tectonic and Magmatic Studies” (2017) published as special issues of Chemical Geology and “Gas geochemistry: From conventional to unconventional domains” (2018) published as a special issue of Marine and Petroleum Geology, this volume continues the tradition of publishing papers reflecting the diversity in scope and application of gas geochemistry.

Beschreibung: In this article, we present a new data collection that combines information about earthquake damage with seismic shaking. Starting from the Da.D.O. database, which provides information on the damage of individual buildings subjected to sequences of past earthquakes in Italy, we have generated ShakeMaps for all the events with magnitude greater than 5.0 that have contributed to these sequences. The sequences under examination are those of Irpinia 1980, Umbria Marche 1997, Pollino 1998, Molise 2002, L’Aquila 2009 and Emilia 2012. In this way, we were able to combine, for a total of the 117,695 buildings, the engineering parameters included in Da.D.O., but revised and reprocessed in this application, and the ground shaking data for six different variables (namely, in- tensity in MCS scale, PGA, PGV, SA at 0.3s, 1.0s and 3.0s). The potential applications of this data collection are innumerable: from recalibrating fragility curves to training machine learning models to quantifying earthquake damage. This data collection will be made available within Da.D.O., a platform of the Italian Department of Civil Protection, developed by EUCENTRE.
