Description: The composite nature of the type series of Sitta velata Temminck, 1821 requires the selection of a lectotype, which will contribute to taxonomic stability. An appropriate specimen (NMW 6379)in Vienna is duly designated.

Description: This name from J.E. & G.R. Gray’s 1847 Catalogue of B.H. Hodgson’s materials from Nepal was not based on a description therein, although it is generally cited from there, and correctly so except for the date. It is valid from there only under the little-used Articles 11.6 and 50.7 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (I.C.Z.N., 1999). These rules allow Hodgson’s 1844 nomen nudum to be reintroduced together with an ‘indication’ although still without a description. In exploring the validity of the citation from 1847 we found that over time the rules of nomenclature have changed and that what should not have been acceptable in 1962 and 1964, is now acceptable. We also draw attention to a colour plate that seems likely to have been intended to support the description as new of this thrush, but had to be corrected when it was found that the bird had already been named. In the event this plate appeared about five months after the Catalogue.

Description: Elise’s Flycatcher was described as a full species Ficedula elisae (Weigold, 1922a), but in 1937 was made a subspecies of the Narcissus Flycatcher Ficedula narcissina (Temminck, 1836), and Zheng et al., 2000, mistook its males for an undescribed species which they named “Ficedula beijingnica”. More recently, owing to its phenotypic characteristics and analyses of its bioacoustics, it has been proposed that elisae should be restored to rank as a full species. After re-examining the full range of evidence it is here recommended to continue treating the taxon subspecifically as Ficedula narcissina elisae pending further information.

Description: Hodgson spent most of his career in Nepal and several years of retirement in Darjeeling, making collection in both areas. Dates relating to these periods are clarified and his collections and donations are discussed. His drawings, touched upon briefly, are now receiving further study and will be reported upon in due course.

Description: The Asian species of nuthatch have been reviewed several times in the last 50 years or so although the changes made have sometimes not appeared in the ‘primary’ literature, thus lack supporting explanations or sufficient detail. There continue to be puzzles over species limits, with a great need for molecular studies to inform on relationships as, morphologically, Sitta appears to be sufficiently varied to sustain two or more genera.

Description: Recent proposed taxonomic changes in the Certhiidae are reviewed within the geographic scope of this series and their reliability is discussed in terms of the Biological Species Concept, with respect to secondary contacts, bioacoustics, and molecular genetics. Certain hitherto unpublished data, useful for the understanding of taxonomic decisions, are included. In accordance with Article 24.2.3 of the Code one of us acts as First Reviser in selecting the correct spelling of the name of the recently described Chinese species.

Description: A critical analysis of the literature regarding Sitta villosa and the examination of specimens has shown that the range of this species is divisible into three main areas. These are well separated and each population is best treated as a valid subspecies, although for corea, the easternmost population, further research is needed to understand the distinctions between two apparently disjunct populations.

Description: The Asiatic subspecies of Sitta europaea form an independent group of races which differ from the European subspecies by their smaller size and bill shape. Based on substantial samples of most of these taxa the present revision distinguishes 13 recognizable subspecies in the group. We remove from the group the subspecies arctica Buturlin, 1907, which is the most distinctive of all the Asiatic forms, because there is a zone of sympatry between this and S. e. baicalensis Taczanowski, 1882, where hybrid individuals may occur but if so must be extremely rare. We therefore support the elevation of arctica to full species level.

Description: The main diagnostic characters of Riparia riparia and R. diluta are discussed based on fresh examinations of extensive material. The opinion of Zarudny that his subspecies innominata belongs to R. riparia is validated, but the series of syntypes of R. riparia innominata includes birds of both these sand martin species, and a lectotype is designated for R. r. innominata Zarudny 1916.

Description: A list is presented of 126 names applied to Asian forms of nuthatch and wallcreeper species (family Sittidae) and of treecreeper and spotted creeper species (family Certhiidae). This list provides information on the whereabouts of type specimens. Where our information does not include reliable data we provide notes to explain the deficit and to stimulate others to offer additional data or sources of information. A lectotype is designated for Sitta frontalis Swainson, 1820.
