Notizen: Microbiological, physicochemical and sensory quality changes in togwa during storage at ambient tropical temperatures were monitored in unpasteurized and pasteurized samples with added sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, propionic acid or a combination of sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate. The untreated samples were unacceptable within 48 h after production. Organic acids, volatile flavor compounds and fermentable sugars were monitored in untreated samples for up to 96 h. Ethanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, 2-methyl-1-propanal, 3-methyl-1-butanol, 3-methyl-1-butanal, acetone, acetoin, lactic, succinic and formic acid increased significantly within 48 h. Pyroglutamic and pyruvic acid decreased and then increased, while uric acid and sugars decreased within 96 h. Sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate or their combination extended the shelf-life of the control samples by four days. Pasteurization at 97C/10 min reduced the total mesophilic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, yeasts and Enterobacteriaceae counts to nil and maintained the pH, titratable acidity, specific gravity, and total soluble content constant, and the products were mildly acceptable during storage for up to 60 days. Pasteurization alone was comparable to the combined effects of pasteurization and treatment with preservatives on the quality of the product. Pasteurization alone may therefore be appropriate for small-scale production and increased commercialization.

Notizen: Soy protein concentrate (SPC), an extender, is a common additive in ready-to-eat (RTE) meat products. SPC contains antioxidants that could potentially interfere with the ability of ionizing radiation to eliminate Listeria monocytogenes from RTE meat products. When L. monocytogenes was inoculated into cooked beef bologna emulsion containing 0, 1.75, or 3.5% SPC the gamma radiation D10 values, at radiation doses of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 kGy, were 0.66, 0.68, and 0.71kGy, respectively. Soluble antioxidant power, as determined by the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay was 1958, 3572, and 5494 mol in bologna emulsion containing 0, 1.75 and 3.5% SPC, respectively. Soluble antioxidant power was not affected by ionizing radiation. SPC did not prevent ionizing radiation induced lipid oxidation as determined by Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substance (TBARS) assay. Hunter color analysis of both unirradiated and irradiated bologna slices containing SPC indicated decreased a value as a result of irradiation, while the addition of SPC helped maintain b-value and L-value. The inclusion of SPC did not represent a barrier to ionizing radiation pasteurization of fine emulsion sausages for the parameters examined.

Notizen: The objective of this analysis was to determine the costs of the development and implementation of HACCP, SSOP's, Salmonella Performance Standards, and Generic E. coli Process Control Testing for small meat and poultry plants. USDA estimated these costs to be $0.0024 per pound with the release of the Pathogen Reduction Ruling. Weighted averages from two other studies estimating implementation costs were $0.0005 and $0.0139 per pound. To collect data and measure actual implementation costs, phone surveys and personal interviews were conducted with small meat (defined as having 10 or more employees but less than 500) slaughter and processing plants in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The analysis suggests that the plants incurred an average of $0.009 per pound in development and implementation costs for these regulations.

Notizen: The objective of this study was to determine if a single assay protocol could result in the concurrent detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella from a single sample grown in a single enrichment in 24 h. Twenty-five and 375 g of ground beef nonfat dry milk, and dry pet food samples were seeded with low (10 cfu/sample) and high (100 cfu/sample) levels ofE. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella cultures and incubated at 35 and 41C for 18 h for nonselective preenrichment. Incubated samples were analyzed by immunomagnetic separation (IMS) following a 6 h incubation for selective enrichment at 37C using M-broth and enzyme linked immumosorbent assay (ELISA). Depending on the food samples and the inoculation level, the minimum concurrent detection level of E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella was 〈1 cfu/g in the samples at the competitor flora level of 105 cfu/g or less in ground beef samples, but in other cases of higher competitor loads and low target inoculations E. coli O157:H7 could not be detected in the presence of the Salmonella.

Notizen: Risk assessment and impact of foodborne pathogens on the health of different populations was one of the goals identified in the Presidential Food Safety Initiative three-year plan. This entailed estimation of dose-response relationship for foodborne pathogens to humans, either by feeding studies or from outbreaks. For certain pathogens, such as Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7, there are no feeding studies due to ethical reasons, and the results from outbreaks are normally used to estimate the infectious dose. The focus of this review is to compile dose-response information in volunteers for several foodborne pathogens including Salmonella, Shigella spp., Campylobacter jejuni, Vibrio spp., Escherichia coli, Cryptosporidium parvum and Entamoeba coli. The infectious dose for different serovars of Salmonella and strains of E. coli was quite large (〉 105 organisms), while the infectious dose for some Shigella spp. seemed to be as low as less than 10 organisms. Toxigenic V. cholerae (O1 and O139 serotypes) were infective at a dose of 104 organisms; a non-O1 strain was infective at a much higher dose (106 organisms). C. jejuni, C. parvum and Entamoeba coli appeared to have infectious doses as low as 500 organisms, 10 oocysts, and 1 cyst, respectively. The infectious dose and the dose response are dependent upon the strains used, and the age and physical condition of the individuals, and can therefore show wide variations. In addition, since many of the volunteer studies are carried out by feeding the organisms in a nonfood matrix after neutralizing the stomach acidity, results obtained may not reflect the true dose response.

Notizen: The influence of chlorine or hydrogen peroxide treatment on populations of Escherichia coli 25922 on the external surface of inoculated cantaloupe was investigated. Surface treatment with 70% EtOH, followed by immersion in 108 CFU/mL E. coli inoculum deposited an average of 4.4 log10CFU/cm2 cell population on the cantaloupe surface. The efficncy of washing inoculated cantaloupe was dependent on storage interval between inoculation and treatment. Dipping the cantaloupes in solutions containing 1000 mg/L chlorine or 5% peroxide for 5 min, within 24 h of inoculation, caused a 2 log10 CFU/cm2 reduction of the indigenous surface microflora and a 3–4.0 log10 CFU/cm2 reduction in E. coli. The efficacy was less when the interval between inoculation and treatment exceeded 24 h. Chlorine appeared in be a better antimicrobial agent than hydrogen peroxide against F. coli ATCC 25922 inoculated on cantaloupe surfaces while hydrogen peroxide was better in reducing surface microflora of cantaloupe.

Notizen: Consumption of chicken products has been increasing. Most of these products in Finland are sold as fresh marinated pieces in consumer packages. The impact of marination on the survival of enteric pathogens is not known. We studied the survival of Campylobacter jejuni on marinated chicken drumsticks and sliced breast strips stored at a refrigerator temperature of +4C. The marinade was an emulsion of vegetable oil and water with spices, NaCl (5.9% wt/wt) and its pH was adjusted to 4.5 with lactic and acetic acid. The survival of C. jejuni was similar in marinated and nonmarinated chicken drumsticks and strips. The organisms were detected for at least nine days at the higher inoculum level (101– 102 CFU/mL) and for at least five days at the lower inoculum level (101– 102 CFU/mL). C. jejuni, inoculated into plain marinade and stored at 4C, was detected after 24 h but not after 48 h. Our results revealed that marination procedure used to reduce and prevent the growth of spoilage organisms does not significantly decrease the survival of Campylobacter jejuni in chicken products.

Notizen: The heat resistance of a Salmonella composite of serotypes Typhimurium, Enteritidis, Montevideo, Mbandaka, Heidelberg and Thompson was evaluated in ground chicken breast meat using an end-point procedure in pouches. A 7D process for Salmonella in chicken was approximately 3 s at 160F (71.1C) with a z-value of 10.3F (5.7C). The data presented here may help cooked chicken products manufacturers design safe processes that meet the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service performance standard.

Notizen: Fourteen fungal species belonging to five genera, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Fusarium and Scoplariopsis were isolated from the surface of mango fruits, (Mangifera indica L.) variety “Zebda”. Mycotoxin production by isolated molds was tested in Czapek-Dox broth as well as mango pulp. The irradiation decimal reduction doses (D10 values) of the molds were determined in either physiological saline solution or mango pulp. The effects of ionizing radiation in combination with hot water-dipping (55C/5 min) on shelf-life extension and the microbiological, chemical, rheological and organoleptic properties of mango fruit (at mature green stage) stored at 12°C and 80–85% relative humidity were determined. Results showed that Zebda mango irradiated with doses of 1.0 kGy can be stored 50 days at 12°C without any undesirable changes to measured nutrient and sensory quality when compared to unirradiated mangoes refrigerated for 25 days.

Notizen: Foodborne pathogens often tolerate and survive environmental stress conditions including extreme acidity to varying degrees. One possible reason for this survival may be the production of protective stress proteins during acid shock (ASR) and/or tolerance (ATR) responses. The ASR and ATR of Listeria monocytogenes strains V7, V37 and CA in tryptic soy broth without dextrose acidified with lactic acid were studied. Possible cross-protection of acid adapted cells against an activated lactoperoxidase system was also determined. The strains were either directly challenged at pH 4.0 and 3.5 to study their ASR or initially adapted at pH 5.5 for the equivalent of 1 generation before challenging at pH 4.0 and 3.5 to study their ATR. Adapted and nonadapted cells were challenged at pH 4.5 with or without an activated lactoperoxidase system. In all cases viability was determined by enumeration over a period of 24 or 48 h after challenge and the production of stress proteins analyzed by 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis. While there were some differences in the survival responses for each strain, the acid adapted cells of each strain survived to a greater degree than nonadapted cells at both pH 4.0 (at least 10 fold at 24 h) and pH 3.5 (at least 1000 fold at 6 h) but not at pH 4.5. The acid adapted cells exposed to the lactoperoxidase system survived better (at least 5-fold) than their nonadapted counterparts for all 3 strains at 24 and 48 h. The 2-dimensional gel analysis for all 3 strains showed that the adapted and nonadapted cells underwent a change in their physiology, (at pH 4.0 compared to the control at pH 7.0; at pH 4.5 with the addition of lactoperoxidase system components) in that there was induction as well as repression of several proteins.

Notizen: Judges rated the intensity of NaCl solutions and orange drinks of varying sweetness using category scales and line scales. They performed under four response conditions that varied in reliance on memory: (1) verbal response (2) written response with no retasting and the response sheet removed (3) written response with a single response sheet which allowed past scores to be reviewed and amended but with no retasting (4) the same as ‘3’ but with retasting. Discrimination errors decreased from conditions ‘1’ through ‘4’ indicating how allowing judges to ‘refresh the memory’ improved discrimination. The cognitive processes involved in rating and consequences for scaling protocols and the experimental design for descriptive analysis are discussed in the light of these findings.

Notizen: The effects of sweetener type, sweetener concentration, and fruit flavor on the sensory attributes of soy fortified yogurt were determined. Soy fortified dairy yogurts were made by the addition of soy protein concentrate (0, 2.5, 5%) to standard yogurt mixes prior to fermentation. Sweetener type (sucrose, fructose, sucrose/fructose) and sweetener concentration (6, 8, 10%) were incorporated into yogurts in a split plot experiment with soy concentration as a subplot factor. Flavor effects (plain, lemon, strawberry) were studied in a 3 × 3 factorial experiment (soy concentration × flavor). A trained descriptive panel (n=13) evaluated yogurts for seven flavor and aroma terms. Sweetener type had no effect on sensory properties with the exception of perceived sweetness. Soy flavors and astringency decreased with increasing sweetener concentration. Fruit flavors decreased soy aromas, soy flavors, and astringency in yogurts containing soy protein. These results indicate that sweetener concentration and fruit flavors play a crucial role in formulating yogurts fortified with soy protein.

Notizen: A two-part study determined the effectiveness of gum-based rinses with or without oil for alleviating residuals of a bitter (0.8 g/L caffeine solution) and an astringent (1g/L alum solution) stimuli in serial responses using a sip and spit method. In Experiment 1, rinsing with deionized water was compared to rinsing with 0.3% xanthan gum in water alone or with 5% corn oil and 0.55% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in water alone or with 5% or 10% corn oil. The 0.3% xanthan gum and 5% corn oil mixture resulted in the highest stimulus intensity difference before and after rinsing, whereas 0.55% CMC had a value of nearly zero for residual effect. Results of a two-alternative forced choice test used in Experiment 2 indicated that both were equally effective for reducing bitterness residuals, but 0.55% CMC solution resulted in the lowest (p=0.007) residual effect for astringency. Therefore, the 0.55% CMC rinse was considered an effective interstimulus rinse to use for assessing both bitterness and astringency in model solutions.

Notizen: For discrimination tests not requiring the nature of the difference to be specified in the instructions, such as the triangle, duo-trio and same-different protocols, it is usually assumed that the decision rule used by the subject in order to generate an answer involves the comparison of the relative sensory distances between the samples. However, there is evidence that an alternative cognitive strategy, the β-strategy, involving the absolute categorization of the sensations could be used by the subject when performing these protocols. This paper introduces the characteristics of this alternative strategy by discussing its statistical power (higher than the traditional strategies) and by describing means of investigating which strategy is used by the subject during an experiment as well as illustrating the experimental conditions that might facilitate the use of this particular decision rule.

Notizen: The perception of astringency and basic taste in mixtures and their interaction effects were investigated by two procedures. In Experiment 1, focused and nonfocused testing procedures were compared using mixtures of low and high concentrations of alum and basic taste solutions. Both procedures yielded taste and astringency intensities that were modality-dependent. Nonfocused testing was used in Experiment 2 to investigate the interactions of astringent phenolic (tannic acid) and nonphenolic (alum) compounds with each basic taste. Sweetness of sucrose increased with increased concentration with or without alum or tannin present. Changes in salty, bitter, and sour taste intensities were modality-dependent. Astringency either remained unchanged or decreased with the addition of sucrose, sodium chloride, citric acid, or caffeine depending upon the taste concentration. Bitterness of tannin and alum at high concentrations was suppressed by the addition of sucrose, sodium chloride, or citric acid; sourness also decreased in the presence of sucrose or sodium chloride as well as a high level of caffeine.

Notizen: Principal component similarity (PCS) analysis was used to evaluate judge performance from a wine competition. Data were analyzed for five international judges and seven wine makers, for 42 white, 30 red and 25 specialty wines, using a 20-point quality scoring system. Principal similarity plots were used to group judges according to judging 'style’ and to identify outliers, for each wine category. Judge groupings were consistent when three different references were used; however, the most interpretable PCS plot was obtained when the overall mean-judge-score was used as the reference. Results from PCS were compared to principal component analysis (PCA). PCS analysis allowed the information from all significant principal components to be graphically represented in two dimensions and was more successful in classifying judges than plots based on the first three principal components. The technique of PCS is an important complement to existing methodologies, and can provide wine competition coordinators with an objective technique for judge evaluation and selection.

Notizen: Anecdotal evidence suggests that astronauts’ perceptions of foods in space flight may differ from their perceptions of the same foods on Earth. Fluid shifts toward the head experienced in space may alter the astronauts’ sensitivity to odors and tastes, producing altered perceptions. Our objective was to determine whether head-down bed rest, which produces similar fluid shifts, would produce changes in sensitivity to taste, odor or trigeminal sensations. Six subjects were tested three times prior to bed rest, three times during bed rest and two times after bed rest to determine their threshold sensitivity to the odors isoamylbutyrate and menthone, the tastants sucrose, sodium chloride, citric acid, quinine and monosodium glutamate, and to capsaicin. Thresholds were measured using a modified staircase procedure. Self-reported congestion was also recorded at each test time. Thresholds for monosodium glutamate where slightly higher during bed rest. None of the other thresholds were altered by bed rest.

Notizen: The effect of liking, brand and price label on purchase intention were studied on crisp snacks in branded, supermarket own label and economy form. Unlabeled assessment segregated the products into differing levels of liking which did not correspond to marketed price and brand location. Level of liking dominated purchase intention under partial label (price or brand alone) and full label (price with brand) conditions. Relative and derived purchase intention measures gave clearer label effects with significance for brand and price. Consumers who professed higher price awareness were more influenced by price, but those professing brand as a main purchase intention reason gave more weight to liking. Results from analysis of purchase intention and degree of liking measures according to private body conscious level were inconclusive.

Notizen: Reaction Time (RT) procedures are widely used in cognitive and behavioral experiments. In the sensory realm RT has been traditionally applied to measure visual, auditory or motor responses. The application of the RT method to gustatory stimuli has proved to be difficult. Attempts to develop automatic control techniques have been restrained by difficulties related to the control of variables, e.g. physiochemical characteristics of chemical solutions and the procedure for stimulus presentation. In this report we describe a computer based system that was designed to measure the reaction time to taste solutions dropped on the tongue. The equipment consists of a pumping system, an interface between the computer and the pumping system, the software required to control the interface and to measure reaction time, and a push button to detect the subject's response. The system can be used as a tool for both research and evaluation tests.

Notizen: Caffeine contributes to the flavor profiles of beverage and food products, and other bitter compounds, such as quinine, cannot replicate caffeine's bitterness. Research also has indicated caffeine's ability to enhance desirable tastes, such as sweetness and saltiness, in beverages by modifying neurological pathways. Caffeine may reduce potential “ off-flavors” by solubilizing some compounds, while having little effect on other compounds considered important in beverage flavor profiles. Exposure to caffeine may enhance cognition and potentially heighten the capacity for smell and taste. Thus, use of caffeine in beverages may positively affect flavor profiles and the experience of beverage consumption.

Notizen: Commercial production of catfish requires frequent feeding, which contributes to effusive microbial blooms in ponds. Microbial production of the muddy metabolite 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) can reduce fish flavor quality. Although commercial seasonings may be added to fillets, little information is available concerning the sensory interaction of seasonings and MIB. The replicate sensory evaluation of catfish fillet samples containing either 1.0 or 10.0 ppb chemically-synthesized MIB conducted under controlled conditions indicated a more frequent acceptance of fish as on-flavored in samples treated with a “ lemon-pepper” commercial seasoning preparation than either untreated samples or those treated with a “ cajun-spice” seasoning blend. In addition, experimentation conducted with fish containing MIB from biological sources within the production pond, indicated a similar reduction in MIB flavor of lemon-pepper-treated samples. Although a 4-terpenol co-eluted with MIB from lemon-pepper treated samples subjected to gas chromatography mass spectroscopy, the compound(s) in the lemon-pepper preparation that interfere with the perception of MIB was (were) not identified.

Notizen: The focus in this study was to study time intensity (TI) methodology and procedures of getting the sensory panel acquainted with this technique. By means of a descriptive profiling exercise effects of altering the structure of a β-lacto-globulin gel, laced with banana aroma on the perception of banana flavor were obtained and a suitable attribute for TI was selected. Samples made up by protein, without any fat are not ideal for a TI study of flavor release because of the fast release of aroma. However, although the concentration of banana aroma was identical in the four groups of gels the intensity was perceived as different. This was reflected in the descriptive profiling as well as in the dynamic study. The TI study showed that it is important to minimize distractive, noncrucial information during the exercise. The assessors had different abilities to connect with the dynamic data acquisition procedure and training made the assessments more congruent. The results also indicate a relationship between the appearance of the TI-curve and the score of the total banana aftertaste.

Notizen: The effect of warm-up on performance for repeated triangle tests is studied according to assessors’ expertise level for both triangle test strategy and the pair of products to compare. Three experiments performed with orange flavored soft drinks show that the effect of warm-up depends on the assessors’ expertise: (1) naive assessors do not increase their performance with warm-up; (2) assessors with a moderate practice of both triangle tests and the pair of products improve their performance with warm-up; (3) assessors with a moderate practice of triangle tests, but not familiar with the pair of products, improve their performance with warm-up too; and (4) assessors highly experienced for both triangle tests and products do not improve their performance with warm-up. These results support the idea that the positive effect of warm-up is due to an attentional process: Warm-up seems to help assessors focusing their attention on the dimension on which the two products are actually different and ignoring the other dimensions. Thus, results show that assessors are able to learn the difference between the two products and to learn to focus their attention on this difference at any time. They also suggest that prior knowledge of the triangle test scheme is required to benefit from warm-up.

Notizen: Many factors contribute to the total perception of a food product. The visual packaging attributes of products can be considered important by contributing to their “ on the shelf” presentation which predisposes consumers to purchase. Such extrinsic product packaging attributes can be considered appearance stimuli and thus differ from the intrinsic sensory attributes of a product only in that the packaging attributes are judged by sight and not using the other senses of mouthfeel, olfaction and gustation during consumption. A new approach to measuring product packaging attributes could be to use descriptive sensory analysis. In order to attempt this, 15 assessors, trained in descriptive analysis procedures generated individual vocabularies to describe Cheddar cheeses’ packaging attributes using the repertory grid method. Vocabulary development sessions were subsequently carried out, during which assessors agreed on a vocabulary of 20 defined packaging attributes. The packaging of 8 Cheddar cheeses was then evaluated using standard descriptive analysis procedures. Analysis of Variance found all attributes to discriminate between the eight cheeses (p〈0.01) and Principal Components Analysis allowed the relationships between cheeses and packaging attributes to be viewed. The analysis also indicated that assessors agreed with each other on the meaning of the packaging attributes and could reproduce their evaluations. Limitations in the use of this method were also considered, particularly in relation to scaling of some of the attributes, and the potential subjectivity of others. Despite this, the study showed it was possible to apply descriptive techniques to describe the packaging attributes of Cheddar cheese.

Notizen: A new ‘bipolar’ R-index analysis was proposed and evaluated. Eighteen judges evaluated red color in eight wine samples by comparing each sample with the control. Judges indicated whether the sample had ‘more’, the 'same’, or ‘less’ red color than the control, and whether they were sure or unsure of their decision. Three computational methods were used to examine the results: the ‘traditional’ R-index, the ‘bipolar’ R-index (Rmore or Rless) and the ‘weighted-bipolar’ R-index. While all three methods provided consistent results, the ‘bipolar’ R-indices reflected bidirectional differences among the samples thus providing more information. A refinement to the computation (‘weighted-bipolar’ R-index) was an approach for eliminating the bias associated with overestimation of the sample size and accordingly changed some of the significance levels. Further research is currently underway to expand the scope and application of this method.

Notizen: Coffee powders available commercially are of different qualities. The quality variations may be due to inherent quality of coffee beans, storage time and packaging materials used. Sensory profiles of brewed and soluble coffees were studied through profiling. Canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) used for positioning the different coffee samples showed that freshly made coffee from plantation arabica (PA), Pea berry (PB), PA with chicory (PAC), PB with chicory (PBC) and their blends viz. PA + PB and PAC + PBC occupied the quadrant where coffee aroma and overall quality rated higher. Other roasted & ground (R&G) coffee (market) samples were positioned where oily, fermented, musty, stale and caramelized notes dominated. In case of soluble coffee, the flavored coffee procured from the western market (S3, S6, S9 and S8) dominated the quadrant where other added flavor and oily notes dominated. The typical soluble (instant) coffee without any added flavor S10, S12 and S13 occupied another quadrant. The soluble coffee powder with spice incorporation took a separate quadrant where other added flavor and bitter taste dominated. The dominant quality attributes for the groups are different and are discussed in relation to the directional vectors.

Notizen: Forty pure chemical compounds representing a wide range of odors, were evaluated by a panel of 240 consumers. These compounds were matched with a list of 40 common descriptors. The results were analyzed by Correspondence Analysis and Hierarchical Clustering. This original approach enhanced the study by providing a layman's point of view and thereby shedding light on the theories of olfactory perception. The level of odor confusion by consumers was also studied. Consumers pointed out three principal odorant directions which we called “ citrus”, “ sweet” and “ heavy” . Aniseed and garlic odors were the most isolated notes. The association among compounds or odors was explained by semantic processes and by the odorant products consumers used which make up their odorant domain.

Notizen: This paper presents a set of analyses on sensory directional attributes used to rate experimentally designed pizza products. Consumers may or may not know the ‘optimal’ sensory level of attributes for pizza, so that the usefulness of the sensory directional varies by attribute. Furthermore, the sensory magnitude of each sensory directional attribute varies, as shown by the slope (B) relating the two attributes (Sensory Magnitude = A + B (Directional Rating)). The study incorporated sensory directionals into evaluation of products varied according to an experimental design. The optimal product emerging from the design does not necessarily exhibit a sensory directional profile where all attributes are ‘on target’, nor does a product whose sensory attributes are all on ‘target’ exhibit the highest level of liking.

Notizen: Cluster analysis, consonance analysis, principal component analysis (PCA) and the GRAPES program (Schlich 1994) were compared for the evaluation of panel performance. Ten judges evaluated 25 Merlot wines for 24 color, aroma and flavor attributes. Cluster analysis grouped similar judges. PCA identified judges according to their attribute use. Consonance analysis determined a numerical index for attribute agreement and the GRAPES program compared judges in their use of the scale, reliability, discrimination and disagreement. Three of the four techniques provided a graphical representation of similarities and differences between judges. Methodologies were best used in conjunction with one another. Ultimately the application of these tools will serve to improve the quality of sensory evaluations.

Notizen: This study examines the effect of beer assessment training on verbal and nonverbal performance. Two groups of subjects are asked to sort, match, and describe a set of 12 beers (6 supplemented and 6 commercial beers). Subjects from the first group are enrolled in a beer-training program. Subjects in the second group are untrained beer consumers. Results show that although both groups perform the matching task equally well, trained subjects performed better on supplemented beers and untrained subjects on commercial beers. Examination of the generated vocabulary shows that 44% of the terms are common to trained and untrained subjects. However, an analysis of the terms’ efficiency shows that whereas for trained subjects, precise terms are more efficient than intensity or hedonic terms; the opposite is observed for untrained subjects. This suggests that it is not the term itself that is important but the common reference associated to it.

Notizen: Quantifying flavor in fruit concentrates for use in soft drink manufacture remains a technical problem. To explore sensory quantifications, a comparison between descriptive analysis (free choice profiling) and ratio scaling strategies was effected. This employed 20 assessors, and a range of commercial black-currant drinks and model product formulations. Free choice profiling yielded product clusters in commercial drinks, but not for formulated drinks. Few descriptors were significant in discriminating samples of the latter group. In addition, assessors were not consistent in quantifying attributes. In contrast, magnitude estimation of the single attribute, overall flavor intensity, produced data which after statistical treatment showed that assessors were able to resolve differences clearly. It was concluded ratio scaling of a single complex attribute had provided a better quantification of flavor character than line scaling of multiple simple attributes.

Notizen: In 2 separate studies, 6 rice and 6 dry-cured ham samples were tasted by 2 sets of consumers. The consumers were asked about their hedonic evaluation and invited to comment on the weak and strong points of food samples. The frequencies of quoted terms were analyzed by correspondence analysis (CA). A trained panel carried out the sample profiles. Hedonic scores were linked to objective assessment using the preference mapping (PM). Figures from CA and PM showed similar proximity between samples in both studies. The descriptive vocabulary used by trained assessors and consumers contained both similarities and differences. In the rice study, the trained panel described Basmati with the terms ‘little elastic’, ‘long grain’ and ‘brioche flavor’, while consumers used ‘aromatic’, ‘long grain’, ‘white color’ and ‘good texture’. In the dry-cured ham study, Iberian and Corsican samples were described by ‘rancid’, ‘blue cheese’, ‘mushroom’, ‘bitter’ and 'sweet’ attributes while consumers only used ‘too fatty’, ‘bad taste’ and 'strange’ terms. Trained assessors stressed the greatest sensory differences while consumers focused on salient popular and unpopular traits. Weak/strong points analysis was efficient to show the level of acceptability by the number of strong points attributed to the samples and the main reasons for acceptability or rejection.

Notizen: The change in flavor produced by food and wine interactions was explored using descriptive analysis of Hollandaise sauce prepared with two levels of butter and three wines: a Chardonnay which was unoaked, acidified with 1.5 g/L citric acid or aged in oak for one year. To measure the effect of the sauce on wine flavor, the intensity of citrus, buttery, and toasted flavor by mouth and of sourness and bitterness was rated in each wine before and after each sauce was tasted. In a second testing series, lemon, brothy and creamy-butter flavor by mouth and creamy mouthfeel were rated for each sauce before and after tasting each wine. The effect of Hollandaise sauce on wine flavor was greater than the effect of wines on sauce flavor, with the higher fat sauce having a slightly larger effect overall. Sour and bitter flavors of the wines decreased in intensity after Hollandaise sauce was tasted, while the buttery flavor by mouth increased. The toasted flavor decreased significantly in the oaked wine after the sauce had been tasted, while citrus flavor was decreased only for the unoaked wine.

Notizen: The suitability of stevioside as a sweetener in peach juice was investigated. Comparison between stevioside and sucrose in terms of sweetness, sweet and bitter aftertastes were determined both in water and peach juice. The results demonstrated that 160 mg/L of stevioside may replace 34 g/L of sucrose in juice, with a 25% decrease in calories, without affecting the sensory characteristics of the product. Synergistic and inhibitory effects between sucrose and stevioside were also monitored at different stevioside concentration. A new juice formulation sweetened with a binary mixture of stevioside (160 mg/L) and sucrose (56 g/L) was not significantly different in terms of desirability from a reference product sweetened with 9% sucrose.

Notizen: Visual haze detection thresholds were assessed in thirty panelists by two methods: the ascending method of limits and a transformed staircase procedure (UDTR, from Wetherill and Levitt 1965). The 3AFC test was used as the response procedure for both methods. Experimental samples consisted of an apple juice simulation (water with food coloring). Haze was added to the samples using formazin, and was calibrated to eleven levels ranging from 0.75–13.30NTU. Haze detection thresholds under store-like conditions (3.55 ± 0.57 [mean ± S.E.] and 3.16 ± 0.50 NTU by the two methods, respectively) were higher than those found previously under more controlled viewing conditions. No differences were found between methods, genders, or order of method presentation (p 〉 0.05); a practice effect showed a slight improvement in detection thresholds between sessions (p= 0.05). Nonparametric tests confirmed the similarities in the threshold estimates from the two methods. The two methods estimated visual haze detection thresholds equally well. However, the ascending method of limits may be preferred method due to the shorter time involved in administration.

Notizen: Diverse food choices and preferences are commonly observed between consumers cross-culturally, however, many aspects of these behavioral differences are not yet fully understood. In order to investigate cross-cultural texture preferences, six extruded snack samples, manufactured under different processing conditions to represent a range of textural characteristics were characterized by a trained panel using descriptive sensory analysis. In parallel, thirty-eight naive European-Origin and thirty-seven naive Chinese-Origin Australian consumers (t = 75) rated their preference for the snacks. The snacks were not representative of any snacks on the market and thus represented a “ novel” product in both cultures. Additionally, consumers answered a simple questionnaire and completed the food neophobia scale. Results of descriptive analysis indicated significant differences (p≤0.01) between the samples for 13 out of 15 descriptive attributes but no significant differences in preference were found between European-origin and Chinese-origin consumers. However, overall analysis of mean effects indicated that Chinese-origin consumers rated samples significantly higher than European-origin consumers (p≤0.05), suggesting a cultural bias in the use of line scales. Gender did not influence texture preference, however, age significantly influenced preference for three of the samples (p≤0.05) and analysis of mean effects also indicated differences in consumers’ ratings which were related to age. Food neophobia classification did not influence preference, although many more Chinese-origin consumers (28) were classified as neophobic than were European-origin consumers (11).

Notizen: The fate of the three herbicides 2,4,5-T (2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid), atrazine (6-chloro-N-ethyl-N′-[l-methyl-ethyl]-l,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine), and DNOC (4,6-dinitro-2-methylphenol) in an anaerobic sandy aquifer was investigated. In the field, each of the herbicides was released simultaneously with tritiated water (HTO) as tracer in the depth interval 3 to 4 mbs (meters below surface) by use of passive diffusive emitters. Atrazine and 2,4,5-T were persistent during the approximately 18 days residence time in the aquifer. In contrast, DNOC was rapidly removed from the water phase following first-order kinetics. The removal mechanism was likely an abiotic reduction. At day 25, the first-order rate constant was 1.47 d−1, but it decreased with time and seemed to stabilize at 0.35 d−1 after 150 to 200 days.In the laboratory, batch experiments were conducted with sediments from 3 to 4 mbs and from 8 to 9 mbs. In these incubations, formation of Fe2+ and depletion of sulfate showed iron and sulfate reduction in sediment from 3 to 3.5 mbs and sulfate reduction in 3.5 to 4 mbs sediment. In sediment from 8 to 9 mbs, the dominant redox process was methane formation. In sediment from 3 to 3.5 mbs, only 27% to 52% of the 2,4,5-T remained after 196 days. 2,4,5-trichlorophenol was identified as the major metabolite. A lag period of at least 50 days was observed, and no degradation occurred in HgCl2 amended controls, verifying that the process was microbially mediated. In the other 2,4,5-T incubations and all the atrazine incubations, concentrations decreased linearly, but less than 25 % was removed within 200 to 250 days. No degradation products could be detected, and slow sorption was the likely explanation. In all the laboratory incubations DNOC was degraded, following first-order kinetics, and when normalized to the sediment/water-ratio, the field and laboratory derived rate constants compared well. The DNOC degradation in the methanogenic incubations (8 to 9 mbs) was up to 50 times faster than in the sediments from 3 to 4 mbs, likely due to the low redox potential.

Notizen: Use of the United States Geological Survey ground water flow model MODFLOW is often hampered by the occurrence of “dry cells.” While MODFLOW allows such cells to “rewet” in the course of a simulation, stability of the heads solution process is often problematical with rewetting functionality operative. In many cases of practical interest (particularly in mining applications), MOD-FLOW simply fails to converge. However by making a number of adjustments to the MODFLOW Block-Centered Flow package, it is possible to overcome this problem in many instances of MODFLOW deployment. These adjustments are such as to allow a layer to transmit water, albeit with a vastly reduced transmissivity, even if the water level in that layer is below its base. With these alterations MODFLOW cells can remain active even if they lie within the unsaturated zone.Testing of the code has demonstrated its ability to perform well in situations where performance of the unmodified MODFLOW is degraded by the necessity to dry and rewet cells. Comparison of heads calculated using the modified MODFLOW with those calculated using MODFLOW-SURFACT (a MODFLOW-based code developed by HydroGeoLogic Inc. that prevents the occurrence of dry cells through use of pseudo soil functions) reveals near-identical results between the two codes. Comparison with analytical solutions of water table location also reveals near coincidence. An example of one such application is presented herein.

Notizen: Data from a large-scale canal-drawdown test were used to estimate the specific yield (s) of the Biscayne Aquifer, an uncon-fined limestone aquifer in southeast Florida. The drawdown test involved dropping the water level in a canal by about 30 cm and monitoring the response of hydraulic head in the surrounding aquifer. Specific yield was determined by analyzing data from the unsteady portion of the drawdown test using an analytical stream-aquifer interaction model (Zlotnik and Huang 1999). Specific yield values computed from drawdown at individual piezometers ranged from 0.050 to 0.57, most likely indicating heterogeneity of specific yield within the aquifer (small-scale variation in hydraulic conductivity may also have contributed to the differences in sy among piezometers). A value of 0.15 (our best estimate) was computed based on all drawdown data from all piezometers. We incorporated our best estimate of specific yield into a large-scale two-dimensional numerical MODFLOW-based ground water flow model and made predictions of head during a 183–day period at four wells located 337 to 2546 m from the canal. We found good agreement between observed and predicted heads, indicating our estimate of specific yield is representative of the large portion of the Biscayne Aquifer studied here. This work represents a practical and novel approach to the determination of a key hydrogeological parameter (the storage parameter needed for simulation and calculation of transient unconfined ground water flow), at a large spatial scale (a common scale for water resource modeling), for a highly transmissive limestone aquifer (in which execution of a traditional pump test would be impractical and would likely yield ambiguous results). Accurate estimates of specific yield and other hydrogeological parameters are critical for management of water supply, Everglades environmental restoration, flood control, and other issues related to the ground water hydrology of the Biscayne Aquifer.

Notizen: This paper uses citation data to assess whether articles published in key ground water journals such as Ground Water (GW) and Water Resources Research (WRR) are impacting research. Citation information was obtained from SCI Journal Citation Reports and The Web of Science—databases maintained by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). Information extracted from The Web of Science was processed further to remove corrections to papers, discussion/replies, and book reviews. Generally, there are many ground water papers published, but citations of these papers are limited. Approximately 10% to 15% of WRR articles, and 2% to 3% of GW articles attract more than 50 citations in their lifetimes. In both GW and WRR, the top 10% of papers eventually will contribute nearly half of the total yearly citations. Another emerging trend is a diminishing emphasis on citations to new work as compared to work more than 10 years in age. When articles in Ground Water or Journal of Hydrology cite papers in Water Resources Research, those papers cite work 10 or more years old half of the time. If one believes that citations are a measure of science impact, then there is cause for concern. Research is inefficient with much produced for little gain. On a typical industrial life-cycle curve, ground water research is likely ranked as mature and close to aging. At this stage, much work will have been completed and the number of truly impactful problems will have dwindled to just a few.

Notizen: We have analyzed a series of ground water samples from the Lake Naivasha region, Kenya, for their helium isotopic composition. Lake Naivasha is unique among the East Africa Rift Valley lakes in that it is fresh. It has long been thought that the low salinity of this lake is due, in part, to rapid water loss from the lake into the local ground water system. Our results show that the Olkaria geothermal waters, south of the lake, are devoid of tritium and, thus, are more than 50 years old. An important implication of these results is that even if Olkaria geothermal reservoir water originated from Lake Naivasha, it has been underground for a long time, (〉50 years) and is not derived from present-day Lake Naivasha water. This flow time is of the same order of magnitude as conservative major solutes, such as chloride, as determined through residence time calculations. On the north side of Lake Naivasha, deep wells (91 m) have water ∼ 20 years old. Water from these wells has stable isotopic values resembling those of nearby rivers, and high-elevation eastern Rift water. This indicates that this water recharges from rains from high eastern Rift Valley escarpments. Many of the shallow wells on the south side of the lake have 3H/3He ages between four and 17 years. The young ages and the δ18 O-enriched signature of the water from these wells indicate that they are recharged by a mixture of water from the lake, Rift flanks, and water from deep pumping wells that is recharged during irrigation. Water mixing ratio calculations using δ18O and δD isotopes show that about 50% to 70% of the southern ground water system is derived from the lake, while the Olkaria geothermal reservoir water shows that 40% to 50% of this water is originally lake water. Calculated mean recharge rates range from 0.10 to 1.59 m/yr with a mean of 0.52±0.40 m/yr. Estimated horizontal velocity from 3H/3He age dating between Lake Naivasha and a well about 3 km to the south is 75 m/yr, giving average horizontal hydraulic conductivity of 6 m/day.

Notizen: Based on research work in the Truyàre River catchment of the Massif Central (Lozàre Department, France), a methodology has been developed for delineating favorable prospecting zones of a few square kilometers within basement areas of several hundred, if not thousand, square kilometers for the purpose of siting high-yield water wells. The methodology adopts a functional approach to hard-rock aquifers using a conceptual model of the aquifer structure and of the functioning of the main aquifer compartments: the alterites (weathered and decayed rock), the underlying weathered-fissured zone, and the fractured bedrock. It involves an economically feasible method of mapping the thickness and spatial distribution of the alterites and the weathered-fissured zone, on which the long-term exploitation of the water resource chiefly depends. This method is used for the first time in hydrogeology. The potential ground water resources were mapped by GIS multicriteria analysis using parameters characterizing the structure and functioning of the aquifer, i.e., lithology and hydrogeological properties of the substratum, nature and thickness of the alterites and weathered-fissured zone, depth of the water table, slope, fracture networks and present-day tectonic stresses, and forecasted ground water quality. The methodology involves a coherent process of downscaling that, through applying methods that are increasingly precise but also increasingly costly, enables the selection of sites with diminishing surface areas as the work advances. The resulting documents are used for ground water exploration, although they can also be applied to the broader domain of land-use management.

Notizen: A water balance study was used for determining recharge rate and mechanisms in the Enler Catchment, Northern Ireland. Here spatially limited data for the water balance resulted in varied calculation of the annual and monthly net infiltration rate. This paper outlines a method whereby high-resolution soil profiles (1 to 2 cm) were obtained from field cores in the upper 2 m of the unsaturated zone using δ18O of water. These profiles show changes in isotopic composition that range from individual rainfall events to annually integrated cycles of rainfall. Recharge rates were calculated from stable isotope profiles for each of the four main soil types in the study catchment and summed over each area resulting in an average recharge in the range 55 to 70 mm/a, which is comparable with previous findings. Applied isotopic tracer tests were also conducted to evaluate the extent of preferential flow through the two main soil types in the catchment. Rates of water movement found from these experiments show good agreement with natural isotopic profiles; however, evidence suggests that preferential flow is not the dominant process controlling water movement in this catchment. This type of data provides valuable information about recharge rates and mechanisms and may facilitate better prediction of contaminant transport pathways in the vadose zone.

Notizen: The single-well, push-pull test has been used in previous field studies to measure in situ zero- and first-order rates for aerobic and anaerobic microbial respiration in the saturated zone. In this paper we demonstrate that the test can also be used to obtain more generalized descriptions of the kinetics of microbially mediated enzymatic reactions. Laboratory and field tests were performed with the model enzyme substrate p-nitrophenyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (PNG). During a push-pull test, injected PNG is hydrolyzed in situ to p-nitrophenol (PNP); the rate of PNP production is taken as a measure of the β-glucosidase activity expressed by indigenous microorganisms. Laboratory tests were performed in physical aquifer models packed with natural aquifer sediment; field tests were performed in a shallow unconfined alluvial aquifer at a petroleum contaminated site. The laboratory and field tests demonstrate that it is possible to compute the in situ rate of PNP production as a function of PNG concentration using only data from a single push-pull test. These data can then be used to estimate the Michaelis-Menton kinetic parameters Vmax and Km for the hydrolysis reaction. This approach potentially extends the range of applicability of the push-pull test approach for use in determining kinetic parameters for a wide range of microbial processes in situ. These could include the broad class of substituted nitrophenyl substrates used to assay other enzyme systems, as well as microbially mediated redox reactions that occur during contaminant transformations.

Notizen: An analytical procedure allowing simultaneous use of seven fluorobenzoate (FBA) isomers was developed and examined through column and field tracer experiments. The analytical method, based on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), included a reverse-phase separation method. This method was found to be very efficient for the FBA analysis, allowing accurate determination of seven FBAs in a single HPLC run, while avoiding analytical interference of other natural water constituents or pollutants. Consequently, this separation method allows the simultaneous use of seven isomers in multitracer tests in highly saline or contaminated environments. The mobility properties of the FBAs were examined in percolation experiments through a column filled with a mixture of crushed chalk and common fracture filling and coating material. The FBAs behaved conservatively as compared to bromid. All seven FBA isomers were successfully used in a multitracer test in a field percolation experiment designed to identify flowpath along a fracture plane.

Notizen: The Bouwer and Rice method of estimating the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) from slug-test data was evaluated for geometries typical of hand-dug wells. A two-dimensional, radially symmetric and variably saturated, ground water transport model was used to simulate well recovery given a range of well and aquifer geometries and unsaturated soil properties, the latter in terms of the van Genuchten parameters. The standard Bouwer and Rice method, when applied to the modeled recharge rates, underestimated Ks by factors ranging from 1.3 to 5.6, depending on the well geometry and the soil type. The Bouwer and Rice analytical solution was modified to better explain the recovery rates as predicted by the numerical model, which revealed a significant dependence on the unsaturated soil for the shallow and wide geometries that are typical of traditional wells. The modification introduces a new parameter to the Bouwer and Rice analysis that is a measure of soil capillarity which improves the accuracy of Ks estimates by tenfold for the geometries tested.

Notizen: Hunt (1999) derived a model for computation of stream flow depletion caused by pumping from a well near a stream that does not fully penetrate the aquifer. The model input includes the transmissivity (T) and the storativity (S) of the aquifer and the conductance of the stream bed (λ). We study the experimental and hydrogeological conditions for which drawdown analysis can be expected to produce T, S, and λ estimates that can be used in the model of Hunt (1999) to predict depletion with a specified accuracy. The study is conducted by using a combination of sensitivity analysis and uncertainty analysis. The analysis shows that it is always important to have an accurate estimate of λ in order to accurately predict depletion. Recommendations for the design of a pumping test near a stream are given to achieve this. The pumping well should be located close to the stream. Accurate drawdown measurements should be made both near the pumping well and near the stream, and the measurements should be used simultaneously to estimate T, S, and λ. The duration of the pumping test should be relatively long in order to obtain an accurate estimate of λ. A methodology is proposed in which a desired accuracy of either the estimates of T, S, and λ, or the stream flow predicted from these estimates, is used to estimate the duration of the pumping test. Some examples indicate that in many cases the duration of the test should be from an hour to one or two months. However, if S is large (∼10−1) and λ is small (10-7 m/s) then the duration should be from several months to years. This would be expensive and not practical, so other methods should be used to estimate λ in this situation.

Notizen: Ground water inflows to drifts ranging from 700 to 1615 m below ground surface at the Con Mine, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, were used to study deep hydrogeological flow regimes in Shield terrain. Salinity trends are due to mixing between low-TDS ground water and deep Ca(Na)-C1 brines (〉290 g/L) likely derived from Devonian sea water. C1-−δ18O relationships demonstrate that all inflows are a mixture of three distinct components: modern meteoric ground water (δ18O ∼−18.9 ± 0.1%o), brine (δ18O ∼−10%o), and an isotopically depleted water (δ18O ∼−28%o). The origin of this third endmember is attributed to glacial melt water injected into the subsurface during ablation of the Laurentide Ice Sheet at ca. 10 ka. A mechanism is proposed where high hydrostatic pressure in the ablation zone imposes strong downward gradients beneath the ice sheet margin. Numerical simulation with the SWIFT II finite-difference code recreates the observed salinity gradients within a modeled 50-year interval, corresponding with the rate of retreat of the ice sheet across the landscape at this time. The persistence of this melt water in the subsurface for some 10,000 years following retreat of the ice and decay of the steep hydraulic gradients highlights the importance of gradient, in addition to permeability, as a major control on ground water flow and transport in deep crystalline settings.

Notizen: Partitioning tracer tests (PTTs) are being used in environmental systems for the detection and estimation of nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) saturations in contaminated aquifers. A series of such studies was recently conducted at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, in two hydraulically isolated test cells of an aquifer contaminated by light nonaqueous phase liquids (LNAPL). These experiments were performed before and after two remediation efforts, a complexing sugar flush (CSF) and a recirculating in-well aeration (IWA) system. The breakthrough curves obtained from monitoring tracer concentrations in the extraction wells indicated the presence of an immiscible phase, and the LNAPL saturation values determined from the pre- and post-PTTs allowed the estimation of remediation efficiencies for both test cells. These remediation efficiencies, a removal of 43% of the LNAPL for the CSF and an increase of 32% for the IWA system, are consistent with data obtained from cores collected from within the experiment zones. The apparent increase in contamination for the IWA cell is likely due to a significant change in the LNAPL distribution caused by the flow system associated with the IWA technology. Several factors influenced the interpretation of the PTT data. Physical heterogeneities at the site caused significant tailing of the tracer concentrations and required the use of a simple extrapolation technique to account for the concentrations below analytical quantification limits. Degradation affected selected nonreactive and reactive tracers, causing the overestimation and underestimation of LNAPL saturations, respectively.

Notizen: A numerical model is used to predict flow along intervals between producing zones in open boreholes for comparison with measurements of borehole flow. The model gives flow under quasi-steady conditions as a function of the transmissivity and hydraulic head in an arbitrary number of zones communicating with each other along open boreholes. The theory shows that the amount of inflow to or outflow from the borehole under any one flow condition may not indicate relative zone transmissivity. A unique inversion for both hydraulic-head and transmissivity values is possible if flow is measured under two different conditions such as ambient and quasi-steady pumping, and if the difference in open-borehole water level between the two flow conditions is measured. The technique is shown to give useful estimates of water levels and transmissivities of two or more water-producing zones intersecting a single interval of open borehole under typical field conditions. Although the modeling technique involves some approximation, the principle limit on the accuracy of the method under field conditions is the measurement error in the flow log data. Flow measurements and pumping conditions are usually adjusted so that transmissivity estimates are most accurate for the most transmissive zones, and relative measurement error is proportionately larger for less transmissive zones. The most effective general application of the borehole-flow model results when the data are fit to models that systematically include more production zones of progressively smaller transmissivity values until model results show that all accuracy in the data set is exhausted.

Notizen: More than 270 multirate single-hole pneumatic injection tests were conducted by Guzman et al. (1996) within six shallow vertical and inclined boreholes in unsaturated fractured tuff at the Apache Leap Research Site (ALRS) near Superor, Arizona. The authors used steady-state formulae to obtain air permeability values for the rock based solely on late pressure data from each test. We developed pressure and pressure-derivative type-curves for the interpretation of transient data from these tests, which account for storage in the test interval due to air compressibility and skin effect due to damage to the surrounding rock. We applied our type-curves to pressure data from more than 40 of the tests to obtain information about air permeability, skin factor, phenomenology, and dimensionality of the flow regime on a nominal scale of 1 m in the immediate vicinity of each test interval. Our air permeabilities agreed well with those determined previously by means of steady- state formulae but correlated poorly with fracture density data. Nonlinear effects due to air compressibility were pronounced, but skin effect was generally small or nonexistent. Nonlinear two-phase flow and inertia were evident but did not have a significant impact on type-curve interpretation of the test data. Most of these data fit a continuum model of spherical airflow around the test interval, but a few fit a continuum model of radial flow or suggest the dominance of a single fracture. We take this to imply that fractures at the site are pneumatically well connected and can, for the most part, be treated as a porous continuum when analyzing airflow on scales of 1 m or more. This is supported by the finding that 1 m scale air permeability data from single-hole tests at the ALRS are amenable to geostatistical analysis (Chen et al. 2000), which views them as a sample from a random field defined over a continuum. That the same holds true on larger scale is indicated by our ability to interpret cross-hole pneumatic injection tests at the site by means of type-curves and inverse methods (Illman et al. 1998), which treat the entire rock mass as a porous continuum.

Notizen: The suitability of common-offset ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to detect free-phase hydrocarbons in bedrock fractures was evaluated using numerical modeling and physical experiments. The results of one- and two-dimensional numerical modeling at 100 megahertz indicate that GPR reflection amplitudes are relatively insensitive to fracture apertures ranging from 1 to 4 mm. The numerical modeling and physical experiments indicate that differences in the fluids that fill fractures significantly affect the amplitude and the polarity of electromagnetic waves reflected by subhorizontal fractures. Air-filled and hydrocarbon-filled fractures generate low-amplitude reflections that are in-phase with the transmitted pulse. Water-filled fractures create reflections with greater amplitude and opposite polarity than those reflections created by air-filled or hydrocarbon-filled fractures. The results from the numerical modeling and physical experiments demonstrate it is possible to distinguish water-filled fracture reflections from air- or hydrocarbon-filled fracture reflections, nevertheless subsurface heterogeneity, antenna coupling changes, and other sources of noise will likely make it difficult to observe these changes in GPR field data. This indicates that the routine application of common-offset GPR reflection methods for detection of hydrocarbon-filled fractures will be problematic. Ideal cases will require appropriately processed, high-quality GPR data, ground-truth information, and detailed knowledge of subsurface physical properties.Conversely, the sensitivity of GPR methods to changes in subsurface physical properties as demonstrated by the numerical and experimental results suggests the potential of using GPR methods as a monitoring tool. GPR methods may be suited for monitoring pumping and tracer tests, changes in site hydrologic conditions, and remediation activities.

Notizen: Subsurface properties such as moisture content, hydraulic head, or chemical composition may vary markedly over short vertical distances in soil and ground water systems, but conventional samplers and sensors placed in vertical boreholes are often unable to resolve these variations. To improve the resolution of subsurface monitoring, we have developed a method for accessing the side-wall of a vertical or angled borehole at many discrete intervals along the entire length of the borehole. The method uses an access device that embeds sensors or sediment samplers laterally through the borehole sidewall into the undisturbed formation to distances slightly less than the diameter of the borehole. The access device can also obtain a core sample up to 15 cm long and 4 cm in diameter, and then insert a permeable sleeve for extracting fluid samples (water, gas, nonaqueous phase liquids). The system has been used under field conditions in the United States and Denmark to place electrodes capable of measuring water content (using time domain reflectometry [TDR] waveguides), Eh (using platinum electrodes), or electrical resistivity (using a four-conductor electrode). At one site, as many as 22 water samplers and 19 resistivity electrodes were installed in a single borehole at vertical spacings as close as 7 cm. This approach was used to install horizontally oriented TDR waveguides at depths greater than 10 m, thereby extending the TDR technique to the study of deep vadose zones. Other applications include measurement of in situ Eh at a site where strong chemical oxidants were injected to remediate sediments contaminated by organic chemicals.

Notizen: Nitrate is now recognized as a widespread ground water contaminant, which has led to increased efforts to control and mitigate its impacts. This study reports on the long-term performance of four pilot-scale field trials in which reactive porous barriers were used to provide passive in situ treatment of nitrate in ground water. At two of the sites (Killarney and Borden), the reactive barriers were installed as horizontal layers underneath septic system infiltration beds; at a third site (Long Point), a barrier was installed as a vertical wall intercepting a horizontally migrating septic system plume; and at the fourth site (North Campus), a barrier was installed as a containerized subsurface reactor treating farm field drainage water. The reactive media consisted of 15% to 100% by volume of waste cellulose solids (wood mulch, sawdust, leaf compost), which provided a carbon source for heterotrophic denitrification. The field trials have been in semicontinuous operation for six to seven years at hydraulic loading rates ranging from six to 2000 L/day. Trials have been successful in attenuating influent NO3- (or NO3-+ NH4+ at Borden) concentrations averaging from 4.8 mg/L N at North Campus to 57 mg/L N at Killarney, by amounts averaging 80% at Killarney, 74% at Borden, 91 % at Long Point, and 58% at North Campus. Nitrate consumption rates were temperature dependent and ranged from 0.7 to 32 mg L N/day, but did not deteriorate over the monitoring period. Furthermore, mass-balance calculations indicate that carbon consumption by heterotrophic denitrification has so far used only about 2% to 3% of the initial carbon mass in each case. Results suggest that such barriers should be capable of providing NO3- treatment for at least a decade or longer without carbon replenishment.Reactive barriers have now been used to treat nitrate contamination from a variety of sources including septic systems, agricultural runoff, landfill leachate, and industrial operations. This demonstration of successful long-term operation should allow this technology to become more widely considered for nitrate remediation, particularly at sites where passive treatment requiring a minimum of maintenance is desired.

Notizen: Integration of lithologic logs, geophysical logs, and hydraulic tests is critical in characterizing heterogeneous aquifers. Typically only a limited number of aquifer tests can be performed, and these need to be designed to provide hydraulic properties for the principle aquifers in the system. This study describes the integration of logs and aquifer tests in the development of a hydrostratigraphic model for the surficial aquifer system in and around Big Cypress National Preserve in eastern Collier County, Florida. Borehole flowmeter tests provide qualitative permeability profiles in most of 26 boreholes drilled in the study area. Flow logs indicate the depth of transmissive units, which are correlated across the study area. Comparison to published studies in adjacent areas indicates that the main limestone aquifer of the Tamiami Formation in the study area corresponds with the gray limestone aquifer in western Dade County and the water table and lower Tamiami Aquifer in western Collier County. Four strategically located, multiwell aquifer tests are used to quantify the qualitative permeability profiles provided by the flowmeter log analysis. The hydrostratigraphic model based on these results defines the main aquifer in the central part of the study area as unconfined to semiconfined with a transmissivity as high as 30,000 m2/day. The aquifer decreases in transmissivity to less than 10,000 m2/day in some parts of western Collier County, and becomes confined to the east and northeast of the study area, where transmissivity decreases to below 5000 m2/day.

Notizen: During the first cycle of the National Water Quality Assessment (1992–1996), ground water in 20 of the nation's major hydro-logic basins was analyzed for 90 pesticide compounds (pesticides and degradates). One or more of the pesticide compounds examined were detected at 48.4% of the 2485 ground water sites sampled. However, approximately 70% of the sites where pesticides were detected, two or more pesticide compounds analyzed were present–documenting the prevalence of pesticide mixtures in ground water. The pesticide concentrations encountered were generally low, with the median total concentration (summation of concentrations for the 90 pesticide compounds) being 0.046 μg/L. Pesticides were commonly detected in shallow ground water beneath both agricultural (60.4%) and urban (48.5%) areas. This is an important finding because, although agricultural activities have long been associated with pesticide contamination, urban areas have only recently been recognized as a potential source of these types of compounds. Pesticides with higher frequencies of detection were generally those with more extensive use, greater environmental persistence, and greater mobility in ground water (lower soil-water partition coefficients).

Notizen: Field tests were conducted to investigate skin effects in multilevel ground water samplers installed with direct push methods. Tests consisted of determining hydraulic conductivity values using slug tests in five multilevel samplers before, during, and after development. Development was conducted using a minisurge block tool designed for this study. Post-development hydraulic conductivity values were found to be 3.2 to 9.6 times greater than predevelopment values. The largest differences were observed in multilevel samplers positioned in low permeable materials that were installed in preprobed holes advanced by hydraulic hammering and pushing as opposed to probes situated in higher permeable materials that were installed in cored holes. The presence and magnitude of the skin effects, as well as the reduction of these effects by rigorous development, were confirmed through comparisons with steady-state pumping tests conducted in multilevel samplers and previously conducted slug tests in conventional monitoring wells. These results indicate the need for rigorous development prior to hydraulic conductivity testing in ground water samplers installed with direct push methods.

Notizen: Monte Carlo simulation is used to examine the utility of simple (homogeneous/isotropic) models for the delineation of wellhead protection areas (WHPAs) in heterogeneous, statistically anisotropic, unconfined aquifers. Capture zone geometry is investigated under two hydrologic conditions: regional gradient negligible compared to pumping and significant regional gradient compared to the local gradient due to pumping. Variability of capture zone geometry is quantified in terms of simple measurements (maximum transport distance and maximum width of the capture zone) and the probability of inclusion in the capture zone of a series of hypothetical contaminant source locations. These results indicate that substantial uncertainty exists in the delineation of a wellhead capture zone. This uncertainty is related, principally, to flow that occurs along preferential pathways associated with zones of high hydraulic conductivity. It is suggested that these uncertainties can be accommodated in one of three fashions depending on the value of land, the benefit of wellhead protection, and the availability of funds to perform more thorough field assessment. The first option is to modify the estimated capture zone by a factor of safety. In the absence of significant regional flow, a factor of safety of approximately three applied to the calculated fixed radius estimate of the capture zone appears to be sufficient for the conditions simulated in this project. In the case of a capture zone within a significant regional gradient, uncertainty in the location of the real capture zone will require safety factors on the width of the estimated capture zone on the order of 30, with a safety factor of approximately three in the longitudinal direction. The second option reduces these factors of safety by increasing the risk that the estimated capture zone will not cover the entire area of the real capture zone. Work available in the literature provides insight into the trade-off between the size of the estimated capture zone and the risk endured. The third option is to reduce uncertainty in the vicinity of a wellhead through additional expenditure to allow the application of classic hydrologic techniques involving conditioning or inverse modeling.

Notizen: Numerical simulations were used to examine the effects of heterogeneity in hydraulic conductivity (K) and intrinsic biodegradation rate on the accuracy of contaminant plume-scale biodegradation rates obtained from field data. The simulations were based on a steady-state BTEX contaminant plume undergoing biodegradation under sulfate-reducing conditions, with the electron acceptor in excess. Biomass was either uniform or correlated with K to model spatially variable intrinsic biodegradation rates. A hydraulic conductivity data set from an alluvial aquifer was used to generate three sets of 10 realizations with different degrees of heterogeneity, and contaminant transport with biodegradation was simulated with BIOMOC. Biodegradation rates were calculated from the steady-state contaminant plumes using decrease in concentration with distance downgradient and a single flow velocity estimate, as is commonly done in site characterization to support the interpretation of natural attenuation. The observed rates were found to underestimate the actual rate specified in the heterogeneous model in all cases. The discrepancy between the observed rate and the “true” rate depended on the ground water flow velocity estimate, and increased with increasing heterogeneity in the aquifer. For a lognormal K distribution with variance of 0.46, the estimate was no more than a factor of 1.4 slower than the true rate. For an aquifer with 20% silt/clay lenses, the rate estimate was as much as nine times slower than the true rate. Homogeneous-permeability, uniform-degradation rate simulations were used to generate predictions of remediation time with the rates estimated from the heterogeneous models. The homogeneous models generally overestimated the extent of remediation or underestimated remediation time, due to delayed degradation of contaminants in the low-K areas. Results suggest that aquifer characterization for natural attenuation at contaminated sites should include assessment of the presence and extent of, and contaminant concentrations in, low-permeability areas of an aquifer.

Notizen: Knowing vertical conductivities of thick aquitards is important for simulating regional or local ground water flow. These hydraulic parameters are best determined by calibration of these models. Collection of reliable data from heavily pumped ground water reservoirs can be problematic. Another way to infer these hydraulic parameters is the simultaneous interpretation of different parts of a multiple pumping test using an inverse numerical model. Here, the drawdowns observed in the indirectly pumped aquifers allow us to deduce the vertical conductivities of the aquitards with an equivalent accuracy as the horizontal conductivities of the aquifers. When the hydraulic resistances of the aquitards are too large, it becomes impossible to induce observable drawdowns in the indirectly pumped aquifers, and the inverse model loses valuable input data. Observing vertical gradients in and over the aquitards in case of important vertical flow can make up for this loss. These data allow us to estimate the specific discharges through the successive parts of the aquitard and hence their hydraulic resistances. This useful information allows us to consider all these hydraulic resistances in one group of hydraulic parameters during the simultaneous interpretation of the multiple pumping test using an inverse numerical model. As this procedure reduces the number of identified parameter groups, it enhances their reliability. In this paper it is demonstrated how this reliability can be deduced from a number of statistical parameters that can also be used in the collinear diagnosis. The proposed interpretation procedure is demonstrated on a triple pumping test performed in and around the most important aquitard in Flanders, Belgium. The obtained results should first be integrated in a local ground water flow model. By the performance of a number of such integrated hydrogeological studies, the lateral change in the hydraulic properties of this aquitard can be evaluated.

Notizen: This study investigated the unsaturated zone properties that affect ground water reaeration (i.e., the diffusive flux of oxygen through the unsaturated zone and into an aquifer system). Laboratory column experiments were undertaken to quantify oxygen flux into anaerobic ground water as a function of soil type, soil water content, soil oxygen demand, and unsaturated zone thickness. Soils used in these studies included coarse sand, sand, loamy fine sand, fine sandy loam, silt, silty clay loam, bentonite, kaolin, and peat. The results showed that reaeration flux rates ranging from 11,000 to 12,000 mg/m2-day were possible under conditions typical of the natural environment. Soil water content provided the greatest resistance to oxygen transport in the unsaturated zone while the remaining factors of soil type, soil oxygen demand, and unsaturated zone thickness did not significantly inhibit reaeration flux into ground water. An unsaturated zone transport model based on Fick's second law and gas-liquid interfacial mass transport was developed and showed good agreement with the experimental results derived from the column studies. The results of this study suggest that unsaturated zone reaeration of anaerobic ground water may be a contributing factor in controlling the steady–state size and shape of hydrocarbon plumes and incorporating reaeration into ground water models—based on unsaturated zone properties—may allow for a more accurate representation of bioattenuation reactions taking place in subsurface environments.

Notizen: Water discharging from numerous tunnels constructed during mining in the Wasatch Mountains near Salt Lake City, Utah, flows into nearby creeks. Disputes over ownership of water feeding the creeks have resulted in extensive litigation. In the course of a legal dispute over ownership of outflow from the Kentucky-Utah (K-U) Tunnel we evaluated the patterns and rates of ground water flow using an integrated study of the geology, chemistry, isotopes, and chlorofluorohydrocarbon (CFC) composition of the water. A sequence of sedimentary rocks with a range of hydraulic conductivity values has been folded, faulted, intruded by igneous rocks, and then eroded to create the rough topography of the Wasatch Mountains. The similarity of composition among tunnel discharge, springs, and base flow in the creek indicates that the creek is fed by ground water circulating in local, shallow flow systems. Results of numerical simulations of ground water flow indicate that the K-U Tunnel likely intercepts ground water that, in the absence of the tunnel, would ultimately flow in the subsurface to Big Cottonwood Creek. CFC and tritium contents of the water indicate flow weighted average ground water travel times range from four to 23 years and support our conclusion that water discharging from the tunnel is moving within a shallow ground water flow system. Despite sparse data, the scientific understanding was deemed sufficient for the judge to rule that owners of the surface water also own the tunnel discharge because, in the absence of the tunnel, this water would supply the stream.

Notizen: Based on the column tracer test, we developed a research method to determine the hydraulic conductivity and effective porosity of saturated clays under low hydraulic gradients or small flow rates. Derived from Darcy's law and the solute transport equation, this method evaluates the hydraulic conductivity through measuring solute concentrations rather than by measuring flow rates. And the effective porosity is determined by applying an analytical solution of the one-dimensional uniform flow equation. Two types of experimental data drawn from a review of the literature and four sorts of accuracy test data carried out in the laboratory are used to examine the proposed method. The reproducibilities of accuracy tests for hydraulic conductivity determination indicate a consistency within a 5.5% error margin. The experimental results further indicate that hydraulic conductivities determined using the tracer method are more precise than those from the conventional flowmeter method. In addition, with the assistance of the proposed tracer method, we argue that the effective porosities may be overestimated as shown in the drawn example cases due to mistaking total pore volumes as the effective pores. The results of the accuracy tests further indicate that the effective porosities of saturated clay specimens are significantly smaller than the total porosities, at least when the samples are allowed to swell freely.

Notizen: Over the last two decades, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of evaluating ground water's contribution to lakes. As a result, a number of techniques have been developed for measuring hydraulic properties across lake bottoms, primarily in the littoral zone. However, for larger, deeper lakes such as the Great Lakes these techniques are impractical in the profundal zone. As a result, many water balance calculations in these settings omit the ground water component altogether owing to the difficulties encountered in making the necessary hydraulic observations across the deeper lake bottom sediments. In this study, a methodology is developed for determining the flux into large, deep lakes using a combination of existing and recently developed techniques. The methodology is applied to the Hamilton Harbor, a natural bay at the western end of Lake Ontario, to estimate the ground water contribution to the harbor's water budget. Hydraulic gradients were monitored in 37 piezometers within the harbor during 1993 and 1994. Calculated hydraulic gradients, along with sediment hydraulic conductivities measured or estimated using a number of techniques, are used to estimate ground water flux to the harbor through Thiessen polygon weighting.Measured hydraulic gradients ranged from −0.333 to 0.430, the majority being upward indicating ground water discharge conditions. Gradients were varied across the harbor and increased in magnitude closer to shore. The total ground water contribution to the harbor was estimated to be 2.1 × 107 m3/yr. Compared with other hydrological components, ground water was slightly larger than the yearly precipitation input, and approximately 8 % of the total surface inflows to the harbor, and 2 % of the total surface outflow through the Burlington ship canal, which connects the harbor to Lake Ontario. The computed ground water flux suggests that despite the fact that ground water flux to large lakes may typically be a smaller input than surface water inputs, it is still a significant component of the overall water budget and should not be automatically omitted from water balance calculations.

Notizen: The fate of disinfection byproducts during aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) is evaluated for aquifers in southern Nevada. Rapid declines of haloacetic acid (HAA) concentrations during ASR, with associated little change in Cl concentration, indicate that (HAAs) decline primarily by in situ microbial oxidation. Dilution is only a minor contributor to HAA concentration declines during ASR. Trihalomethane (THM) concentrations generally increased during storage of artificial recharge (AR) water and then declined during recovery. The decline of THM concentrations during recovery was primarily from dilution of current season AR water with residual AR water remaining in the aquifer from previous ASR seasons and native ground water. In more recent ASR seasons, for wells with the longest history of ASR, brominated THMs declined during storage and recovery by processes in addition to dilution. These conclusions about THMs are indicated by THM/Cl values and supported by a comparison of measured and model predicted THM concentrations. Geochemical mixing models were constructed using major-ion chemistry of the three end-member waters to calculate predicted THM concentrations. The decline in brominated THM concentrations in addition to that from dilution may result from biotransformation processes.

Notizen: Principal component analysis was used to define patterns in water table hydrographs at four small, lake-watershed research sites in the United States. The analysis provided insights into (1) characteristics of ground water recharge in different parts of the watersheds; (2) the effect of seepage from lakes on water table fluctuations; and (3) the effect of differences in geologic properties on water table fluctuations. At two sites where all of the water table wells were completed in permeable deposits, glacial out-wash in Minnesota and dune sand in Nebraska, the patterns of water table fluctuation primarily reflected timing and magnitude of recharge. The water table had more frequent and wider ranges in fluctuations where it was shallow compared with where it was deep. At two sites where the water table wells were completed in sand or till, a glaciated mountain valley in New Hampshire and stagnation moraine in North Dakota, the patterns of water table fluctuations were strongly related to the type of geologic unit in which the wells are completed. Furthermore, at the New Hampshire site, the patterns of water table fluctuations were clearly different for wells completed in sand downgradient of a lake compared with those completed in sandy terraces on a mountain-side. The study indicates that principal component analysis would be particularly useful for summarizing large data sets for the purpose of selecting index wells for long-term monitoring, which would greatly reduce the cost of monitoring programs.

Notizen: Deterministic and stochastic methods of three-dimensional hydrogeologic modeling are applied to characterization of contaminated Eocene aquifers at the Savannah River Site, South Carolina. The results address several important issues, including the use of multiple types of data in creating high-resolution aquifer models and the application of sequence-stratigraphic constraints. Specific procedures used include defining grid architecture stratigraphically, upscaling, modeling lithologic properties, and creating multiple equiprobable realizations of aquifer stratigraphy. An important question answered by the study is how to incorporate gamma-ray borehole-geophysical data in areas of anomalous log response, which occurs commonly in aquifers and confining units of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and other areas. To overcome this problem, gamma-ray models were conditioned to grain-size and lithofacies realizations. The investigation contributes to identifying potential pathways for downward migration of contaminants, which have been detected in confined aquifers at the modeling site. The approach followed in this investigation produces quantitative, stratigraphically constrained, geocellular models that incorporate multiple types of data from borehole-geophysical logs and continuous cores. The use of core-based stochastic realizations in conditioning deterministic models provides the advantage of incorporating lithologic information based on direct observations of cores rather than using only indirect measurements from geophysical logs. The high resolution of the models is demonstrated by the representation of thin, discontinuous clay beds that act as local barriers to flow. The models are effective in depicting the contrasts in geometry and heterogeneity between sheet-like nearshore-transgressive sands and laterally discontinuous sands of complex shoreline environments.

Notizen: To model ground water flow in a shallow aquifer underlying a salt marsh, the impact of total stress changes due to tidal loading of the marsh surface on the piezometric head within the aquifer must be considered. If the deformation of the porous medium is negligible, a ground water flow model may be modified to account for the changing total stress. The incorporation of these modifications into the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) numerical model SUTRA is discussed, and example problems for which analytic solutions are available are presented to demonstrate the behavior and validity of the modified model. In addition, the form of the specific pressure storativity term used in the SUTRA model is discussed and modifications of this form are suggested.

Notizen: The relationship between the ground water sample and the surrounding ground water environment is controlled by wellborn flow and mixing that carry ground water to the sampling device. Controlled laboratory conditions and uniform inflow and inflowing concentration allowed detailed investigations of wellbore concentration responses to pump-induced flow and mixing independent of external complicating influences. During pumping from the top of the screen, the results agreed with wellbore flow theory except for high-frequency, high-amplitude concentration fluctuations and mixing with the blank casing due to slight density contrasts (∼0.005%). Concentration fluctuations indicated partial mixing of ground water with well water and declining concentrations in the blank casing indicated that convection due to the slight density contrast overcame pump-induced velocities. During pumping from the bottom of the well, opposing forces of buoyancy and pumping produced small-scale cumulative mixing as the ground water from different portions of the screen approached the pump. Even during low-flow pumping (i.e., 220 mL/min), 5% of the water was prepurge well water after five well volumes were pumped. In the field the density contrasts that resulted in these mixing processes might be caused by a slight cooling of the wellhead or a slight increase in temperature with depth (〉0.2°C/m). If the temperature gradient was more pronounced, the convective mixing of screen water with the potentially altered casing water would be more thorough and sampling without mixing would not be possible. If the temperature gradient is stable or if the water in the blank casing is not significantly altered, casing water mixing will not present a problem.

Notizen: Determining the discharge of ground water to Shingobee Lake (66 ha), north-central Minnesota, is complicated by the presence of numerous springs situated adjacent to the lake and in the shallow portion of the lakebed. Springs first had to be located before these areas of more rapid discharge could be quantified. Two methods that rely on the distribution of aquatic plants are useful for locating springs. One method identifies areas of the near-shore lakebed where floating-leaf and emergent aquatic vegetation are absent. The second method uses the distribution of marsh marigold (Caltha palustris L.) to locate springs that discharge on land near the shoreline of the lake. Marsh marigold produces large (2 to 4 cm diameter) yellow flowers that provide a ready marker for locating ground water springs. Twice as many springs (38) were identified using this method as were identified using the lack of near-shore vegetation. A portable weir was used to measure discharge from onshore springs, and seepage meters were used to measure discharge from near-shore springs. Of the total 56.7 L s−1 that enters the lake from ground water, approximately 30% comes from onshore and near-shore springs.

Notizen: Steady-state analytical solutions are presented for estimating the ground water inflow rate to a mine pit that may contain a pit lake of finite depth. The solutions consider (1) the effect of decreased saturated thickness near the pit walls; (2) distributed recharge to the water table; and (3) upward flow through the pit bottom. While the solutions are not appropriate for all hydrogeologic situations, they are relevant to conditions encountered at many mine sites. An example calculation is presented for an actual mine pit containing a pit lake. The analytical solutions provide an estimated ground water inflow rate that is similar to the rate determined independently from a detailed water balance study.

Notizen: Sea water intrusion has occurred on the east and southeast coasts of Laizhou Bay, China, since the 1970s (Wu et al. 1993). In 1981, on the adjacent south coast, the intrusion of salt water originating from brine was observed. In this area, the salt water intrusion was caused by the excessive pumping of fresh water in aquifers. Moreover, the simultaneous pumping of fresh water and salt water/brine formed a complicated ground water flow field. The data obtained from observation wells were used to analyze the origin of the salt water and brine, and the genesis of the bicarbonate/sodium water zone. All data suggest that the brine originated from ancient sea water, and that the bicarbonate/sodium water was formed by cation exchange. The variations of chemical compositions along representative flowpaths and the relationships between such variations and salt water intrusion were also discussed.

Notizen: A method is described to estimate the distribution of ground water recharge within hydrographic basins in the Great Basin region of the southwestern United States on the basis of estimated runoff from high mountainous areas and subsequent infiltration in alluvial fans surrounding the intermontane basins. The procedure involves a combination of Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis, empirical surface-runoff modeling, and water-balance calculations. The method addresses the need to develop and incorporate constraints on the distribution of recharge in regional-scale ground water flow modeling of arid and semiarid environments. The conceptual approach and methodology were developed for Crescent Valley, Nevada. However, the concept and method are generally applicable to any region where excess precipitation in upland areas is conveyed to lower elevations before it infiltrates to recharge the ground water system. Application of the procedure to a ground water flow model of Crescent Valley appears both qualitatively and quantitatively to result in a more accurate representation of actual recharge conditions than might otherwise have been prescribed.

Notizen: A recent paper by Hutchins and Acree (2000) has called attention to ground water sampling bias due to ambient (natural gradient-induced) flows in monitoring wells. Data collected with borehole flowmeters have shown that such ambient flows are ubiquitous in both confined and unconfined aquifers. Developed herein is a detailed three-dimensional model of flow and transport in the vicinity of a fully penetrating monitoring well. The model was used to simulate a measured ambient flow distribution around a test well in a heterogeneous aquifer at the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina. Simulated ambient flows agreed well with measurements. Natural flow was upward, so water entered the well mainly through high K layers in the lower portion of the aquifer and exited through similar layers in the upper portion. The maximum upward discharge in the well was about 0.28 L/min, which implied an induced exchange of 12 m3/month from the bottom half of the aquifer to the upper half. Tracer transport simulations then illustrated how a contaminant located initially in a lower portion of the aquifer was continuously transported into the upper portion and diluted throughout the entire well by in-flowing water. Even after full purging or micropurging, samples from such a well will yield misleading and ambiguous data concerning solute concentrations, location of a contaminant source, and plume geometry. For all of these reasons, use of long-screened monitoring wells should be phased out, unless an appropriate multilevel sampling device prevents vertical flow.

Notizen: Streambed hydraulic conductivity (K) values were determined at seven stream transects in the Platte River Basin in Nebraska using different instream measurement techniques. Values were compared to determine the most appropriate technique(s) for use in sandy streambeds. Values of K determined from field falling- and constant-head permeameter tests analyzed using the Darcy equation decreased as permeameter diameter increased. Seepage meters coupled with hydraulic gradient measurements failed to yield K values in 40% of the trials. Consequently, Darcy permeameter and seepage meter tests were not preferred approaches. In the upper 0.25 m of the streambed, field falling- and constant-head permeameter tests analyzed with the Hvorslev solution generally had similar K values that were significantly greater than those determined using the Hazen grain-size, Bouwer and Rice slug test for anisotropic and isotropic conditions, and Alyamani and Sen grain-size methods; median differences between these tests and the Hvorslev falling-head 60 cm diameter permeameter were about 8, 9, 17, and 35 m/day, respectively. The Hvorslev falling-head permeameter test is considered the most robust method for measuring K of the upper 0.25 m of the streambed because of the inherent limitations of the empirical grain-size methods and less sediment disturbance for permeameter than slug tests. However, lateral variability in K along transects on the Platte, North Platte, and Wood Rivers was greater than variability in K between valid permeameter, grain-size, or slug tests, indicating that the method used may matter less than making enough measurements to characterize spatial variability adequately. At the Platte River tributary sites, the upper 0.3 m of the streambed typically had greater K than sediment located 0.3 to 2.5 m below the streambed surface, indicating that deposits below the streambed may limit ground water/surface water fluxes. The Hvorslev permeameter tests are not a practical measurement approach for these greater depths. Thus, selection of a method for measuring streambed K needs to consider the vertical location of the sediments that are most likely to limit the rate of ground water/surface water interaction.

Notizen: Aquifer samples from the precipitation zone of an in situ iron and manganese removal plant that was operated for 10 years were analyzed for iron and manganese minerals. Measurements were performed by various chemical extraction techniques (5 M HC1,0.008 M Ti(III)-EDTA, 0.114 M ascorbic acid), X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Chemical extractions showed that iron was precipitated as ferric oxides, whereas manganese was not oxidized but deposited as Mn(II) probably within carbonates. The ferric oxides in particular accumulate preferentially in the smaller grain- size fractions. This tendency was observed to a lesser extent for manganese. X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy showed that the ferric oxides were mainly crystalline (goethite, 50% to 100% of the iron). Ferrihydrite was found as well, but only as a minor fraction (≤ 12%). Pure manganese minerals were not found by X-ray diffraction. The precipitated amounts of iron (5 to 27 μmol/g Fe as ferric oxide) and manganese (1 to 4 μmol/g Mn) during 10 years operation of the treatment plant agree with values that were estimated from operational parameters (9 to 31 μmol/g Fe and 3 to 6 μmol/g Mn). Considering the small amounts of precipitated iron and manganese, no long-term risks of clogging of the aquifer are expected.

Notizen: A three-dimensional solute transport model with biological reactions is presented for simulating the natural attenuation study (NATS) at the Columbus Air Force Base in eastern Mississippi. NATS consisted of the release of a petroleum-based nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) and subsequent monitoring of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p-xylene), naphthalene, decane, and bromide in a shallow, unconfined aquifer. Conceptual and mathematical models were developed for NAPL source release, sequential aerobic/anaerobic biodegradation, and sorption during NATS. A multiple species, solute transport code (SEAM3D) was used to simulate fully three-dimensional transport and aerobic, nitrate-reducing, ferrogenic, and methanogenic hydrocarbon biodegradation. Simulation results matched individual BTEX concentration distributions collected five- and nine-months following NAPL release. SEAM3D mass-balance calculations at t = nine months indicated that 49% of the hydrocarbon mass that dissolved into the aqueous phase was consumed by biodegradation, 13% of this mass was sorbed, and the remaining 38% was present in the aqueous phase. Mass calculations at t = nine months further indicated that aerobic biodegradation accounted for the majority of hydrocarbon biodegradation (46% of the biodegraded mass), followed by ferrogenesis (28%), nitrate-reduction (21%), and methanogenesis (5%). Model results were particularly sensitive to the NAPL release rate, the initial ferric iron (Fe[III]) concentration, hydrocarbon utilization rates, initial condition for the anaerobic microbial populations, and dispersivity.

Notizen: A numerical inverse method was used to interpret simultaneously multirate injection and recovery data from single-hole pneumatic tests in unsaturated fractured tuff at the Apache Leap Research Site near Superior, Arizona. Our model represents faithfully the three-dimensional geometry of boreholes at the site, and accounts directly for their storage and conductance properties by treating them as high-permeability and high-porosity cylinders of finite length and radius. It solves the airflow equations in their original nonlinear form and yields information about air permeability, air-filled porosity and dimensionless borehole storage coefficient. Some of this is difficult to accomplish with analytical type-curves. Air permeability values obtained by our inverse method agree well with those obtained by steady-state and type-curve analyses.

Notizen: Current simple mine water filling models suffer from two drawbacks: (1) they often do not account for variations in mine void volume with depth; and (2) they assume that recharge to the mine is approximately constant. The Mine Water Filling Model (MIFIM) presented here rectifies these drawbacks by presenting the concept of effective area (Ea) in a lookup table and assigning deep ground water inflows a conductance whereby inflow varies in inverse proportion to mine water head, once the mine water level exceeds the level of the water inflow. The MIFIM concept may be readily programmed in a computer spreadsheet environment, with simple graphical output. The approach is particularly suited to mines in low permeability rock, with a limited number of discrete inflow features.

Notizen: A hydraulic field test program was performed at a hard rock laboratory (Aspo HRL) on the Swedish east coast to test upscaling theories. The test program investigated the rock volume around a borehole located at a depth of approximately 340 m below sea level. Hydraulic packer tests were performed at various scales, from 2 m to the entire borehole length of 296 m. From this set of data the predictive ability of different upscaling methods could be evaluated. The comparison of the evaluated “true” field scale hydraulic conductivity with the upscaled hydraulic conductivity yielded that the majority of the upscaling methods tested in this paper predict the large scale values with significant accuracy. However, the ability to predict rapidly decreases when the variance of the natural logarithm of hydraulic conductivity of the subsamples is larger than one. Such a variance is consistently found in the crystalline rocks at the tested site at the 2 m scale. However, at scales of 10 m and larger, a variance larger than one is uncommon. Therefore, it is concluded that there exists a smallest possible scale for use of hydraulic pumping test results for estimating the effective hydraulic conductivity at scales typical for regional flow.

Notizen: The lower Illinois River Basin (LIRB) covers 47,000 km2 of central and western Illinois. In the LIRB, 90% of the ground water supplies are from the deep and shallow glacial drift aquifers. The deep glacial drift aquifer (DGDA) is below 152 m altitude, a sand and gravel deposit that fills the Mahomet Buried Bedrock Valley, and overlain by more than 30.5 m of clayey till. The LIRB is part of the USGS National Water Quality Assessment program, which has an objective to describe the status and trends of surface and ground water quality. In the DGDA, 55% of the wells used for public drinking-water supply and 43% of the wells used for domestic drinking water supply have arsenic concentrations above 10 μg/L (a new U.S. EPA drinking water standard). Arsenic concentrations greater than 25 μg/L in ground water are mostly in the form of arsenite (AsIII). The proportion of arsenate (AsV) to arsenite does not change along the flowpath of the DGDA. Because of the limited number of arsenic species analyses, no clear relations between species and other trace elements, major ions, or physical parameters could be established. Arsenic and barium concentrations increase from east to west in the DGDA and are positively correlated. Chloride and arsenic are positively correlated and provide evidence that arsenic may be derived locally from underlying bedrock.Solid phase geochemical analysis of the till, sand and gravel, and bedrock show the highest presence of arsenic in the underlying organic-rich carbonate bedrock. The black shale or coal within the organic-rich carbonate bedrock is a potential source of arsenic. Most high arsenic concentrations found in the DGDA are west and downgradient of the bedrock structural features. Geologic structures in the bedrock are potential pathways for recharge to the DGDA from surrounding bedrock.

Notizen: The Kathmandu Basin in Nepal contains up to 550 m of Pliocene-Quaternary fluvio-lacustrine sediments which have formed a dual aquifer system. The unconfined sand and gravel aquifer is separated by a clay aquitard, up to 200 m thick, from the deeper, confined aquifer, comprised of Pliocene sand and gravel beds, intercalated with clay, peat, and lignite. The confined aquifer currently provides an important water supply to the central urban area but there are increasing concerns about its sus-tainability due to overexploitation.A limited number of determinations of the radioisotope 36Cl have been made on bore waters in the basin, allowing us to postulate on the age of ground water in the deeper, confined aquifer. Ground water evolution scenarios based on radioisotope decay, gradual dissolution of formational salts as the ground waters move downgradient, and flow velocity estimations produce comparable ground water ages for the deep waters, ranging from 200,000 to 400,000 years. From these ages, we deduce a mean ground water flow velocity of only 45 mm/year from recharge in the northeast to the main extraction region 15 km to the southwest. We thus estimate current recharge at about 5 to 15 mm/year, contributing 40,000 to 1.2 million m3/year to the ground water system. Current ground water extraction is estimated to be 20 times this amount. The low specific discharge confirms that the resource is being mined, and, based on current projections, reserves will be used up within 100 years.

Notizen: The vadose zone was examined as an environmental compartment where significant quantities of atrazine and its degradation compounds may be stored and transformed. The vadose zone was targeted because regional studies in the White River Basin indicated a large discrepancy between the mass of atrazine applied to fields and the amount of the pesticide and its degradation compounds that are measured in ground and surface water. A study site was established in a rotationally cropped field in the till plain of central Indiana. Data were gathered during the 1994 growing season to characterize the site hydrogeology and the distribution of atrazine, desethylatrazine, deisopropylatrazine, didealkylatrazine and hydroxyatrazine in runoff, pore water, and ground water. The data indicated that atrazine and its degradation compounds were transported from land surface to a depth of 1.5 m within 60 days of application, but were undetected in the saturated zone at nearby monitoring wells. A numerical model was developed, based on the field data, to provide information about processes that could retain and degrade atrazine in the vadose zone. Simulations indicated that evapotranspiration is responsible for surface directed soil-moisture flow during much of the growing season. This process causes retention and degradation of atrazine in the vadose zone. Increased residence time in the vadose zone leads to nearly complete transformation of atrazine and its degradation products to unquantified degradation compounds. As a result of macropore flow, small quantities of atrazine and its degradation compounds may reach the saturated zone.

Notizen: In this investigation, using previously derived equations by Vedernikov and Morel-Seytoux, closed-form solutions have been obtained to compute the seepage from a slit and a strip. Also, a graphical solution as an extension of Vedernikov's graph has been presented for computing quantity of seepage from triangular, rectangular, and trapezoidal canals. The solution replaces approximately the cumbersome evaluation of improper integrals with unknown implicit transformation variables.

Notizen: Discharges of polluted water from abandoned mines are a major cause of degradation of water resources worldwide. Pollution arises after abandoned workings flood up to surface level, by the process termed ground water rebound. As flow in large, open mine voids is often turbulent, standard techniques for modeling ground water flow (which assume laminar flow) are inappropriate for predicting ground water rebound. More physically realistic models are therefore desirable, yet these are often expensive to apply to all but the smallest of systems. An overall strategy for ground water rebound modeling is proposed, with models of decreasing complexity applied as the temporal and spatial scales of the systems under analysis increase. For relatively modest systems (area 〈 200 km2), a physically based modeling approach has been developed, in which 3-D pipe networks (representing major mine roadways, etc.) are routed through a variably saturated, 3-D porous medium (representing the country rock). For systems extending more than 100 to 3000 km2, a semidistributed model (GRAM) has been developed, which conceptualizes extensively interconnected volumes of workings as ponds, which are connected to other ponds only at discrete overflow points, such as major inter-mine roadways, through which flow can be efficiently modeled using the Prandtl-Nikuradse pipe-flow formulation. At the very largest scales, simple water-balance calculations are probably as useful as any other approach, and a variety of proprietary codes may be used for the purpose.
