Notes: Model systems for the reaction of amines with esters were investigated with ab initio methods. Ammonia and methylamine were used as models for primary amines, and formic acid, methyl acetate, phenyl acetate, and p-nitrophenyl acetate were chosen to represent typical esters. Geometry optimizations were performed for all systems with the HF/6-31G** method, and relative energies were evaluated by using MP2/6-31G** single-point energies. The lowest barriers are found for the reaction of methylamine with p-nitrophenyl acetate. Reaction occurs in this case according to a direct displacement pathway, in which all bond formation and breaking occurs in a single step. Complexation of the transition structures by dimethyl ether or dimethoxyethane leads to much the same changes as observed for variation of the leaving group. Based on the ab initio data a force field for the calculation of transition state-catalyst complexation was developed. This force field as well as ground state complexation energies were employed to predict catalytic activities for a number of polyethers, polyalcohols, and pyrans, which in part, were also investigated experimentally.

Notes: Pyruvated di- and trisaccharide fragments representing the immunodominant side chains of Klebsiella K26 capsular polysaccharides are prepared. Phenyl 4′,6′-O-benzylidene-1-thio-β-D-lactoside (1) is converted in 4 steps into the corresponding pyruvated 1-thio-lactoside (2) and transformed into the imidate (4). Coupling of the latter with Z-protected 5-aminopentanol gives the pyruvated disaccharide fragment (6) upon deblocking. Similarly, imidate (4) is coupled to allyl 2,3-di-O-benzoyl-3-O-(1-fluoro-1,1,3,3-tetraisopropyl-1,3-disiloxane-3-yl)-α-D-glucopyranoside (8) to give the corresponding trisaccharide fragment upon deblocking.

Notes: A mathematical model was formulated to describe the reaction rate and the particle size distribution of solids in a fluidized bed for the chlorination of rutile by a CO/Cl2 mixture. The bubble assemblage model was applied to describe the gas behavior in the bed. The particle-size distribution in the bed was determined by a population balance. Predictions of the model gave satisfactory agreement with experimental results. The effects of important variables such as superficial gas velocity, exchange rate between the phases, and the reaction-rate constant were evaluated.

Notes: The maximum turbulence energy dissipation rate per unit mass, εmax, is an important variable in dispersion systems, particularly for drop breakup and coalescence, and for gas dispersion. The effect of tank geometry (number of baffles, impeller diameter, and off-bottom clearance) on εmax for four impellers (the Rushton turbine, RT; the pitched blade turbine, PBT; the fluidfoil turbine, A310; and the high-efficiency turbine, HE3) is examined. Mean and fluctuating velocity profiles close to the impellers were measured in a cylindrical baffled tank using laser doppler velocimetry. Local and maximum turbulence energy dissipation rates in the impeller region were estimated using ε = Av3/L with A = 1 and L = D/10 for all four impellers. Factorial designs were used to test for the effects of single geometric variables under widely varying conditions and interactions between variables. Several factorial designs were used to ensure that real effects were separated from effects that appeared as an artifact of the experimental design. Results show that the tank geometry has a significant effect on εmax, primarily with respect to variations in impeller diameter and interactions between the off-bottom clearance and impeller diameter. For the same power input and tank geometry, the RT consistently produces the largest εmax and/or εmax scaled with N3D2.

Notes: Etching is one of the critical steps in the fabrication of microelectronics devices. A time-optimal control problem with a dual-term terminal cost including both bottom linewidth and side-wall curvature is formulated to implement an optimal open-width design principle. A singular-arc solution does not exist and the control action is bangbang. The optimal switching time is analytically calculated. The feasibility and effectiveness of this technique are illustrated by simulation studies. This design and control philosophy can easily be applied to other microelectronics manufacturing processes.
