    Notes: A study of the Pinguipes chilensis Valenciennes 1833 diet was carried out on 414 specimens captured on the Talcahuano, Chile coastline (36°41′S; 73°06′E) between October 1998 and March 2000. P. chilensis, endemic to the southeast Pacific (from Tumbes, Peru to Magallanes, Chile), is confirmed as a general predator over a wide trophic spectrum including 61 taxa. Crustaceans (mostly mysids, but also a wide variety of decapods) made up the principal dietary component, followed by fish and annelids. Prey belonging to Mollusca, Ophiuroidea, Echinoidea, Rhynchocoela, Sipunculida, Echiura and Urochordata were also present. There were no significant differences between male and female diets, although they shared only 32 prey. A significant dietary difference was found, however, between analysed size groups: specimens under 30 cm total length (TL) preyed mainly on the amphipod, Ampelisca araucana; those over 30 cm TL preyed on the mysid, Neomysis sp.; and those over 40 cm TL on fish, annelids, molluscs and echinoderms. Seasonal differences, due in large part to the dynamics of the prey species, were also found to be significant. Crustaceans were the predominant prey throughout the study with the exception of autumn, when fish were the most common prey.

    Notes: The study describes some key elements of the reproductive biology, including spawning season, age at sexual maturity, fecundity and egg diameter of the native brown trout, Salmo trutta macrostigma, in a tributary of the Ceyhan River. A total of 197 brown trout (118 females and 79 males) were captured in 2000–2001 by electric fishing. In observations on monthly changes, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the monthly frequency distribution of egg diameter confirmed that spawning lasted from November to January. Some 27.7% of the females and 62.5% of the males attained sexual maturity in their second year. The smallest fork length (FL) of brown trout attaining sexual maturity was 17.4 cm for males and 17.8 cm for females. Mean fecundity in age groups II, III, IV and V were 360, 452, 693 and 1283 eggs per female, respectively. One 9-year-old female had a unique 3232 egg count. The mean fecundity of the sampled population was 554 eggs per fish, positively correlated with the FL (mm) (R = 0.8227 ) and body weight (R = 0.8130). The diameter of mature eggs in the spawning season ranged from 3.250 to 5.930 mm, with a 4.146 mm average. Mean egg diameter in age groups II, III, IV and V in the spawning season were 0.813, 3.799, 4.663 and 5.243 mm, respectively. Fecundity, egg weight and diameter were statistically different in all age groups.

    Notes: Formalin preservation, freezing, and salted and non-salted smoking are often used to preserve fishes. Body proportions of fish show changes upon preservation when applying different preserving techniques; most authors report a decrease in length and some authors report changes in weight and condition factor (k). Four groups of round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) were subjected to the above treatments. Initial fork length (cm) and weight (g) ranged from 8.7 to 10.8 cm and 6.74 to 11.4 g, respectively. All fish decreased in both length and weight, with highly significant (P 〈 0.05) differences. Condition factor decreased in all treatments except formalin. Percentage reductions in length, weight, and condition factor were 11.0, 68.0 and 54.8% with salted smoking; 13.0, 69.3 and 53.3% with non-salted smoking; 3.0, 14.1 and 6.7% with freezing; and 7.1, 13.3 and 108.1% with formalin preservation, respectively. Shrinkage was the least with freezing, followed by formalin, salted smoking, and non-salted smoking preservation.

    Notes: Peat harvesting is a lucrative industry in New Brunswick, Canada, and is for the most part located along the coast. Current methods of mining peatlands are such that high levels of peat fibers are transported by runoff into fresh and marine waters. To understand better the influence of peat substrate on aquatic organisms living in peat-impacted habitats, the sand shrimp (Crangon septemspinosa) was used as a bioindicator. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted in which shrimp were provided with a choice between sand and peat. Long-term studies on starved shrimp confirmed that whereas foraging activities took place on both substrates, shrimp display an overall preference for sand (73% of all shrimp observed were on sand, n=60). When food was deposited on each of the substrates, shrimp generally opted to feed on sand (75% of all shrimp observed were on sand, n=60). After all food on sand was consumed, shrimp tended to move to peat. This was followed by a short period of foraging on both sand and peat with an eventual return to sand in most instances. The presence of food on both substrates did not influence their preference for sand. However, shrimp will move onto a peat substrate to forage if food is present only there. This observation suggests that, although there is a marked preference for sand, peat is not completely repellent to them. Finally, histological investigations of the shrimp digestive system revealed that peat was ingested with food particles and processed in the gastric mill. There was, however, no discernible discrimination between the two substances during ingestion. Finally, starved shrimp on peat substrate did not ingest peat fibers, suggesting that peat is not perceived as an alternative food source.

    Notes: Rapid and reliable identification of tilapiine taxa and strains is essential for selective breeding purposes and the conservation of natural genetic resources. There is evidence that antisera-mediated erythrocyte agglutination assays can fit these requirements. We evaluated the applicability of agglutination tests by studying the capacity of species characteristic antisera to recognize erythrocytes from individuals of 10 natural Ghanaian populations of Oreochromis niloticus and Sarotherodon melanotheron. The vast majority of the 218 tested individuals could be identified based on antisera-mediated erythrocyte recognition. Controls indicated the specificity of these reactions. Still, erythrocytes from 16% of all tested specimens did not respond to any antiserum (zero responders), indicating the possible existence of blood group properties in tilapias. We discuss the specificity of the antisera, the relevance of zero responses and the applicability of these tests in aquaculture and field studies.

    Notes: Weight and length descriptive statistics are reported for 73 fish species discarded in the commercial fisheries from the south coast of Portugal. Parameters of the weight–length relationship were estimated for 57 of these species. These are the first weight–length parameters reported for 20 of these species. For an additional 16 species for which no weight–length parameters have been reported, the parameter a was estimated by setting b = 3.0. Samples were used from five gear types: crustacean trawler, fish trawler, pelagic purse seine, demersal purse seine and trammel net. Samples were obtained from depths ranging from 〈30 m to 〉500 m and included pelagic and demersal species.
