    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a modelling study on regional sustainable development. First, the use of formal modelling for studying the multi-level relationship between economic, environmental and development processes is discussed. Such a relationship is analyzed for an island region in Greece. A potential conflict exists here between environmental conservation, local interests and rapid growth in tourism. A dynamic model is used to depict the development of the economies of three main islands and their interactions with the terrestrial and marine environment. The presentation of the case study model is followed by a discussion of scenarios, indicators and simulation results.

    Notes: Abstract A decision theoretic problem is considered which arises in the context of monitoring point sources of pollution: The management of an industrial plant may be authorized to release per unit time some amount of pollutants into the environment, for example air or water. An environmental agency may control, i.e. decide with the help of randomly sampled measurements, whether or not the real releases are larger than the permitted ones. The analysis of the problem of determining the “best” inspection procedure is performed with the help of a non-cooperative two-person game and can be constructed as follows: For a given value of the false alarm probability, only a zero-sum game has to be considered, where the probability of detecting illegal behavior is the payoff to the inspector. The solution of this game, i.e. the best inspection procedure, is then determined by use of the Neyman-Pearson Lemma.

    Notes: Abstract It is often claimed that there is a trade-off between economic goals and the quality of the environment. For this reason, an environmental input-output optimization model with multiple objectives is formulated. The criteria are the minimization of factor costs to produce the Gross National Product and the minimization of net pollution for a given level of final demand. Using the LeChatelier-Samuelson principle, we analyze the changes in the production of the sectors and in the prices of the goods (described by the dual model) due to the change in the preferences of the decision makers. It can be shown that higher weights for the environmental objectives imply — in tendency —non-decreasing production of the sectors andnon-decreasing abatement activities. The changes of prices are ambiguous. The condition for increasing prices is given. To some degree, the opposite results can be achieved, if maximization of the value of final demand (or of private consumption) and minimization of net pollution under the constraints for primary input are taken as objective functions. In this case, increasing weights for environmental goals will leadin tendency tonon-increasing final demand and tonon-increasing net pollution. Under given conditions, higher environmental quality will be achieved bynon-increasing gross production and abatement activities.

    Notes: Abstract Successful management and stewardship of environmental systems requires reliable assessment of their development dynamics in response to changing environmental and management conditions. Descriptive (statistical) models cannot cope with this challenge since their development is based on historical time series with little or no reference to actual system structure. On the other hand, explanatory (process) models attempt to capture the essential eco-physiological processes determining dynamic behavior, and they are therefore much better suited for the computation of development dynamics under changing conditions, even when long-term empirical observations are not possible or feasible. As an example of the use of process models in environmental systems analysis, a forest simulation model describing growth, and carbon and nitrogen dynamics of a single-species, even-aged forest stand under silvicultural management and pollution influences is presented, together with some representative simulation results. Steps in obtaining valid but compact tree models for complex forest simulations are outlined, and recent software developments (object-oriented programming) are assessed with respect to their potential for environmental systems analysis.

    Notes: Abstract In searching for cost-efficient strategies to reduce emissions from energy conversion, most western countries use energy-emission models. In these models, the whole energy conversion chain and possible future options for energy supply and emission reduction are mapped into a network of energy flows. Total discounted cost of energy supply and emission reduction is minimized under the restriction of maximum allowed emissions of SO2, NO x , or CO2. The present paper extends one of these models to allow for fuzzy parameters. Such an extension appears to be useful when the data situation is weak. In this paper, a fuzzy linear program is developed, which has been applied to an energy-emission model of Lithuania.
