Description: The book sheds new light on a much debated issue in the field of ancient history: the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire and its relationship with Judaism in the 2nd century. The contributions collected in this volume illustrate from a multidisciplinary perspective (including archaeology, cultural, religious, and political history) how Christianity found a peculiar way of integrating into the transforming empire under Emperor Hadrian. In this way, Christianity gained an increasing place within Roman society, which ultimately opened the door to its affirmation in subsequent centuries.

Reflections about his journey often inquire as to its having been a critical factor for the Reformation, a prejudicial perspective often leading to a negative view of the trip and the city. The volume seeks to free up the theme from this paradigm, and to impart a differentiated picture of the city of Rome, Luther`s Roman journey, and the recollected images associated with it.

Description: The struggle with the Donatists in North Africa dominated Augustine`s term of office as bishop. In order to disprove their views, in his writings not only did he employ theological arguments, he also referred to events which occurred at the time of the origins of the schism. Augustine`s aim was to use historical documents to prove that the Donatists had no right to claim that they represented the pure Church, free of "traditores". The Donatists reacted to this challenge by developing their own version of the history of the schism. This study draws on Augustine`s anti-Donatist writings to analyse and assess the historical arguments and views of both groups.

Description: The present volume`s focus lies on the formation of a multifaceted discourse on Christian martyrdom in Late Antiquity. While martyrdom accounts remain a central means of defining Christian identity, new literary genres emerge, e.g., the Lives of Saints (Athanasius on Antony), sermons (the Cappadocians), hymns (Prudentius). Authors like Eusebius of Caesarea and Augustine employ martyrological language and motifs in their writings, while beyond the borders of the Roman Empire, new martyrs` narratives can be found. The volume thus enlarges and specifies our knowledge of this important Christian discourse.

He commences with an analysis of theearliest testimonials bythe Emperor himself after his conversion, his massive moral and material support for the Christian clergy and ecclesiastic communities, andConstantine`srole as the first ruler of all Christendom up to his death in 337. Finally, it is shown that the Emperor wanted to suppress non-Christian religions and make Christianity the sole religion of the Empire and all humanity.

Description: The notion that early Christianity was a "lower class religion" is surely outdated. Yet the extent to which members of the social elites turned to the new faith remains a matter of intense scholarly dispute. Many researchers argued against the idea that the social elites were already represented among early Christians. However, the sources give extensive evidence that senators and local officials were among the Christians of the 1st century CE.

Description: The terms ´logos of reason` and ´logos of belief` refer to two important aspects of western culture at the beginning of the Christian era. On the one hand there is the classical tradition, with its comprehensive claim to be able to explain the truth about reality by means of the logos. On the other hand there is the Christian message, which proclaims the self-revelation of God in the form of the Son, and so also claims for itself the truth about God, mankind and the world. The semantic ambiguity of the term ´logos` provided the occasion for a controversy that unfolded among the educated. The contributions to this volume present aspects of the controversy, and attempt to illuminate the connection between culture, belief and transmission against its historical background.

Description: Ennodius lived during the reign of the Ostrogothic King Theoderic. When he wrote his various works he was deacon in Milan, later becoming Bishop of Pavia. This study is an introduction to his life and works, and reveals how the deacon promoted the ´worldly` culture of languages and rhetoric. Particular attention is paid to the letters which he sent to secular and ecclesiastic officials (including the Pope), as well as relatives. Among other things, he demanded that the Roman ruling classes crown their privileged position by dedicating themselves to cultural matters.

Description: So far, only the Latin text in a critical edition from the year 1948 has been available from the law treaty of the Summa Halensis. With the three-volume publication, a German translation and a commentary on this important work in the transition from early modern to high scholasticism will be presented together with the Latin text for the first time. From a conceptual point of view, this treatise was fundamental in its foundation and development of the different manifestations of the law - as eternal law, natural law, Mosaic law and evangelical law. His extensive interpretation of the Mosaic Law also has concrete references to the world of life and belief, which are revealing for the cultural and social history of this time. Also regarding the turning to the Torah in the current theology and in the context of the interreligious and socio-political discourses over the understanding of the law deserves attention the law council of the Summa Halensis, because he in many respects to the reflection over the function (s) of the law as well as the context of theology and law.

Description: The book focuses on the “Tractatus contra Graecos” (1252) by an anonymous Dominican from the convent of Constantinople, a theological dossier outstanding with regard to its various interaction with contemporary Latin-Greek discourses. Polemical theology is, to a certain extent, always making of: Notions of the other church are conveyed, which - if they did not meet their own expectations of the question of church unity - turned from the partner to the enemy. The analysis of these notions shows that under an often polemical text surface there is sometimes a much more original theology than one would expect this genre of text to be, and this theology is the central leitmotif of this book, drawing out and working into the sketch of medieval ecclesiology.

A research project funded by the FWF Austrian Science Fund (P29315) has now made it possible to produce a critical edition of the Sahidic Gospel of John, based on 172 different preserved manuscripts, most of them fragments.

Description: The commentary as transmitted in the Cologne manuscript consists of four principal sections: an initial section on the characteristics of the four Gospels (praef., lines 1– 133 of the edition);20 an extensive exposition of Matthew 1:1–2:18, apparently in three chapters (M. long. I–III, lines 134–574); a numbered list of the titles for each of the 160 sections of the full commentary (cap. M. I–CXXVIIII / cap. L. I–XIII / cap. J. I–XVIII, lines 575–755); the commentary itself, treating almost all of the Gospel according to Matthew in 129 chapters (M. I–CXXVIIII) followed by a portion of Luke in 13 chapters (L. I–XIII) and the opening of John in 18 chapters (J. I–XVIII) (lines 756–3306). There is no initial dedicatory letter or statement of authorial intent. The indication of the end of a given section, explicit, is found at the end of the first two parts and also at the end of the whole commentary in the Cologne manuscript (lines 133, 574 and 3306). Nevertheless, the unity of the work is demonstrated by internal connections. In particular, the first seven chapters of the full commentary refer back to the earlier, more detailed treatment of the beginning of Matthew, which itself contains an indication of the commentary to follow and a reference to the preceding introduction.21 The critical edition by Dorfbauer includes, as an Appendix, two passages from the “Pseudo-Theophilus” commentary which may represent borrowings from Fortunatianus in sections missing from all extant witnesses to the commentary (“Excerpta dubia”).

Examing the memory of saints, this study inspects a central field in which this structural change took place. The main themes are, on the one hand, the connection between memoria and various group identities, and, on the other, the specific Christian concept of remembrance, which inturn formed an important prerequisite for the change from a city of late Classical Antiquity to an early medieval city.

Description: The book by Abjar Bakhou presents Medieval Christian author Gerasimus and his discussion with Islam. His aim was to show that Christian teachings are not irrational, but rather subtle and complex. As a Christian philosopher and theologian, Gerasimus used the experiences of those of the past to facilitate his own response to critics. However, two important differences separated him from earlier apologists, which demand his own insight and innovation. First, the new language of intellectual discourse was Arabic, which was not accommodating for expressing traditional Christian doctrine, and required the development of a vocabulary out of terms already heavily influenced by the Qur'anic worldview. Second, the new religion challenging Christianity was one of absolute monotheism, which shared neither a common scriptural nor cultural heritage, and rejected the very possibility of a Trinity and Incarnation. Although a common theme in early Christian apologetics was the refutation of Judaism, the debate generally centered on the interpretation of the Old Testament, showing that Jesus was indeed the Messiah. The Qur'an, while acknowledging Jesus as the Messiah, explicitly rejects the Christian doctrines of the Incarnation and the Trinity, and presents itself as the revelation, which supersedes all previous revelation. Thus, although Christians and Muslims share certain themes and figures (such as Creation and the Last Judgement, Abraham, Moses, Mary and Jesus), Muslims refuse evidence contrary to the Qur'an, leaving Christians without recourse to traditional scripture-based arguments. Gerasimus, as a Christian apologist and mutakallim, accepted these challenges and began the process of explaining and translating his faith in the new milieu to make it coherent and rational. In his treatise, Gerasimus reveals himself to be a full participant in this important period of intellectual history; he sets down the basic points of controversy and outlines a response to them in a form that would be an excellent introduction to Christian theology written for the Muslim environment. Gerasimus was also a mutakallim in his own right, the Christian counterpart to those Islamic scholars who sought to defend their faith through rational arguments. In an effort to argue the legitimacy of Christianity, Gerasimus attempts to create a common language that influences the meaning of terminology and concepts of intellectual development in Muslim - Christian debates. Such language would set the stage for centuries to come. This is certainly his greatest contribution.

Description: This study examines the attitude of three important pre-Constantinian Church authors on the issue of military service by Christians. During their era, there were growing numbers of Christians in the army, and discussions began in their communities as to whether this was consistent with Christian beliefs. Many positions and arguments emerged. At the same time, the study shows how Christianity struggled to find its position within the Roman Empire.

Description: This book introduces and translates Sedulius Scottus` Prologue to his Collectaneum in Apostolum and his commentaries on Galatians and Ephesians. The introduction outlines the historical context of composition, identifies Sedulius` literary model - Servius, explains pertinent philological and stylistic issues of Sedulius` Latin, explores his use of exegetical and theological sources - predominantly Jerome, Augustine, and Pelagius. Description: The present study is concerned with sources for the history of the dioceses of Reims and Trier since the 8th century. It starts with essential information on the history of these dioceses in the Early Middle Ages which can be traced back mainly to accounts by the influential Archbishop Hinkmar of Reims (845-882). The problems of Hinkmar`s accounts and their continued influence are brought out against the contemporary background of the age of their composition, and their later deformations are followed over time. By taking up the trail of these deformations, the contingency of historical information and transmission becomes clear.

Description: Begründet von Michael Schmaus †, Werner Dettloff † und Richard Heinzmann Fortgeführt unter Mitwirkung von Ulrich Horst Herausgegeben von Isabelle Mandrella und Martin Thurner Das Grabmann-Institut ist eine im deutschsprachigen Raum einzigartige Einrichtung zur Erforschung und Lehre der Theologiegeschichte.
