Notes: Abstract Two mutually incoherent pump waves impinging symmetrically on a LiNbO3:Fe crystal from different faces in a plane normal to the C-axis produce chartacteristic patterns of light-induced scattering (lines and rings) and a pair of collimated waves propagating roughly in backward directions with respect to the pump waves. We show that the bright line of scattered light is in fact the mirrorless oscillation due to backward-wave four-wave mixing in the crystal with local (photovoltaic) response, while the retropropagating waves appear only because of high-order diffraction processes.

Notes: Abstract We report a theoretical model for an estimate of carrier-induced changes in the refractive index of InSb at room temperature. The dispersion of Δn within the photon-energy interval of 0.12–0.24 eV is investigated for nonequilibrium carrier concentrations of 1015–1018 cm−3. An analysis of the influence of the initial carrier density on Δn is performed. The obtained results can help to develop InSb opto-electronic devices.

Notes: Abstract We report on the first observation of mirrorless oscillation in BaTiO3 pumped by two nearly counterpropagating mutually incoherent light waves, both containing an ordinary and an extraordinary component. The oscillation waves appear at a certain angle defined by the phase matching condition for four-wave mixing of orthogonally polarized waves.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the transmission of XeCl excimer laser pulses (308 nm) through optical all-silica fibers are reported. The observed photodegradation effects during long time irradiation are dependent on the laser energy density and the laser repetition rate. Also the influence of the fiber drawing parameters and fiber geometry have been investigated. Absorption spectra of the fibers in the wavelength range from 200nm to 400nm before and after the irradiation with the excimer laser give some insight in the physical reasons for the changes in transmission properties. A spectral analysis of the fiber fluorescence has been performed.

Notes: Abstract Light-induced refractive index changes in LiNbO3:Fe crystals are investigated at high light intensities (〉109 Wm−2). Holographic gratings are recorded and erased with frequency-doubled pulses of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. We find new intensity dependent contributions to the holographic sensitivity, to the photoconductivity, and to the saturation value of refractive index change. Light-induced absorption changes are also detected. These results indicate that the Fe2+/Fe3+ charge transport model, well established for low intensities, has to be modified for high intensities by assuming additional centers which trap and supply electrons.

Notes: Abstract We report the presence of quasipermanent effects of photochromic and hole-photorefractive nature in Bi12TiO20 (BTO) at low irradiance at 514.5 nm. A new selective two-wave mixing (S2WM) detection technique was used that allows to separately detect phase and amplitude gratings. S2WM is used in this work for operating a self-stabilized recording setup which allows to produce unusually large quasipermanent effects. We also show that stabilized recording is necessary to obtain reliable information from hologram erasure experiments. Results reported in this paper show the complex nature of recording in BTO and the capabilities of stabilized recording and S2WM for fundamental and applied research on photorefractive crystals.

Notes: Abstract Polymer lightguides of PMMA doped with the azo dyes methyl-red and N, N-dihexyl-4-amino-4'-nitro-azobenzene (DHANA) are investigated with respect to their opto-optical properties. The trans-cis photoisomerisation of the dyes leads to reversible polarization-dependent optically induced refractive index changes. The index changes are anisotropic. Birefringence is measured using index matched lightguides. The changes with respect to each polarization are determined by leaky mode spectroscopy and by using a half-integrated interferometer. These changes are intensity dependent and, with a suitable geometry, bistability at low intensities (3 mW/mm3) can be obtained.

Notes: Abstract The temporal evolution of nonlinear scattering which is induced by simultaneous action of an ordinary and an extraordinary wave impignig on a photorefractive crystal in the plane perpendicular to the c-axis is investigated. Diffusion is presumed to be the main charge transport mechanism. The extended analysis takes into account scattered light with monotonically increasing intensity as well as transient scattering. The comparison of theoretical results with measurements of a BaTiO3 crystal yields good agreement.

Notes: Abstract A nominally undoped LiNbO3 crystal with a slightly broadened absorption edge is used to study beam coupling effects in the UV at 351 nm. At this wavelength the crystal exhibits a diffusion-dominated charge transport mechanism, which allows steady state beam amplification of up to 700 times, comparable to BaTiO3 in the visible. The used crystal material was characterized by an absorption coefficient α=2.68 cm−1 at 351 nm and a maximal gain coefficient Г=13.94 cm−1. This high gain value in the UV can be attributed to a hole diffusion-dominated charge transport mechanism together with a low bulk photovoltaic effect. We measured photovoltaic fields of the order of 550 V/cm.
