Beschreibung: A simulated combustor flow field has been generated in order to study the effects of high intensity large scale turbulence on boundary layer heat transfer. Turbulence intensities of up to 19 percent and integral lengths scales of 4 to 6 centimeters have been generated. Heat transfer has been augmented by up to 28 percent for the flat plate constant velocity turbulent boundary layer.

Beschreibung: An improved k-epsilon model for low Reynolds number turbulence near a wall is presented. The near-wall asymptotic behavior of the eddy viscosity and the pressure transport term in the turbulent kinetic energy equation is analyzed. Based on this analysis, a modified eddy viscosity model, having correct near-wall behavior, is suggested, and a model for the pressure transport term in the k-equation is proposed. In addition, a modeled dissipation rate equation is reformulated. Fully developed channel flows were used for model testing. The calculations using various k-epsilon models are compared with direct numerical simulations. The results show that the present k-epsilon model performs well in predicting the behavior of near-wall turbulence. Significant improvement over previous k-epsilon models is obtained.

Beschreibung: A series of numerical calculations are made of a jet in crossflow using progressive mesh refinement up to 2.4 million grid points. A solution algorithm that combined the features of a point-coupled solution of the momentum and continuity equations with multigrid acceleration demonstrated efficient convergence of the governing equations. In comparisons with experimental data, some features of the jet flow field were found to be predicted reasonably well, but the results still remain affected by numerical diffusion.

Beschreibung: Large-eddy simulations of transition on a flat-plate boundary layer have been carried out. Standard residual stress models of the Smagorinsky type are excessively dissipative, but rescaling the model constant improves the prediction of the total (integrated) subgrid scale dissipation, leading to results that compare favorably with those of a direct simulation, at a small fraction of the computational effort.

Beschreibung: Surface heating techniques to control the three-dimensional laminar-turbulent transition process are numerically investigated for a water boundary layer. The Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved using a fully implicit finite difference/spectral method. The spatially evolving boundary layer is simulated. Results of both passive and active methods of control are shown for small amplitude two-dimensional and three-dimensional disturbance waves. Control is also applied to the early stages of the secondary instability process using passive or active control techniques.

Beschreibung: Disturbances in the swept Hiemenz flow are calculated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations. The spatially-evolving base flow is treated exactly, allowing a check of the 'local' stability theories. Different types of disturbances such as random noise, waves, and wave packets, are input near the attachment line, develop in space, and exit through an outflow boundary. They all generate streamwise vortices. The effect of the Reynolds number, of the time-dependence of the noise, and of nonlinearity, are investigated.

Beschreibung: Linear stability theory for chemically reacting (equilibrium and nonequilibrium) flows is applied to study the stability of hypersonic boundary layers under the equilibrium assumption. The results for Mach 15 flow indicate that the second mode instability shifts to lower frequencies, as compared to the perfect gas results. The peak second mode growth rate is also increased for the equilibrium gas model. However, the results for Goertler instability show very little real gas effect. The present theory has been applied to a sphere-cone flight transition experiment performed at freestream Mach of about 20.

Beschreibung: Theoretical studies of boundary-layer transition are described, based on high Reynolds numbers and with attention drawn to nonlinear interactions, breakdowns and scales. The article notes in particular truly nonlinear theories for which the mean-flow profile is completely altered from its original state. Two- and three-dimensional flow theory and conjectures on turbulent boundary-layer structures are included. Specific recent findings noted, and in qualitative agreement with experiments, are: nonlinear finite-time break-ups in unsteady interactive boundary layers; strong vortex/wave interactions; and prediction of turbulent boundary-layer displacement- and stress sublayer-thicknesses.

Beschreibung: Several upwind numerical methods for solving the compressible inviscid and viscous flow equations are discussed. Due to their explicit nature, the schemes are very simple and easy to apply to solutions on multi-block structured grids. Their favorable high frequence damping results in good rates of convergence when combined with multigrid procedures. The schemes are optimized using a simple stability and damping factor analysis. Results for three-dimensional test cases are shown and discussed. Attention is payed to the relative efficiencies of these schemes.

Beschreibung: An integrated fluid-thermal-structural analysis approach using adaptive unstructured meshes is presented. The approach combines the finite-element method and an adaptive remeshing technique to solve the Navier-tokes equations for high-speed compressible flow, the energy equation for the thermal response of the structure, and the quasi-static equilibrium equations for the structural response. The analysis solution procedure and the adaptive unstructured remeshing technique are described. The effectiveness of the approach is evaluated with three application studies. The adaptive unstructured remeshing procedure and finite-element solution algorithms combine to yield increased accuracy and effiency over standard structured meshes.
