    Beschreibung: Dust elevated in local or global dust storms on the Martian surface could settle on photovoltaic (PV) surfaces and seriously hamper their performance. Using a recently developed technique to apply a uniform dust layer, PV surface materials were subjected to simulated Martian winds in an attempt to determine whether natural Aeolian processes on Mars would sweep off the settled dust. Three different types of dust were used; an optical polishing powder, basaltic "trap rock", and iron (III) oxide crystals. The effects of wind velocity, angle of attack, height above the Martian surface, and surface coating material were investigated. It was found that arrays mounted with an angle of attack approaching 45 degrees show the most efficient clearing. Although the angular dependence is not sharp, horizontally mounted arrays required significantly higher wind velocities to clear off the dust. From this test it appears that the arrays may be erected quite near the ground, but previous studies have suggested that saltation effects can be expected to cause such arrays to be covered by soil if they are set up less than about a meter from the ground. Particle size effects appear to dominate over surface chemistry in these experiments, but additional tests are required to confirm this. Providing that the surface chemistry of Martian dusts is not drastically different from simulated dust and that gravity differences have only minor effects, the materials used for protective coatings for photovoltaic arrays may be optimized for other considerations such as transparency, and chemical or abrasion resistance. The static threshold velocity is low enough that there are regions on Mars which experience winds strong enough to clear off a photovoltaic array if it is properly oriented. Turbulence fences proved to be an ineffective strategy to keep dust cleared from the photovoltaic surfaces.

    Beschreibung: A manufacturing plant and process for production of oxygen on the moon uses lunar minerals as feed and a minimum of earth-imported, process materials. Lunar feed stocks are hydrogen-reducible minerals, ilmenite and lunar agglutinates occurring in numerous, explored locations mixed with other minerals in the pulverized surface layer of lunar soil known as regolith. Ilmenite (FeTiO.sub.3) and agglutinates contain ferrous (Fe.sup.+2) iron reducible by hydrogen to yield H.sub.2 O and metallic Fe at about 700.degree.-1,200.degree. C. The H.sub.2 O is electrolyzed in gas phase to yield H.sub.2 for recycle and O.sub.2 for storage and use. Hydrogen losses to lunar vacuum are minimized, with no net hydrogen (or any other earth-derived reagent) consumption except for small leaks. Feed minerals are surface-mined by front shovels and transported in trucks to the processing area. The machines are manned or robotic. Ilmenite and agglutinates occur mixed with silicate minerals which are not hydrogen-reducible at 700.degree.-1,200.degree. C. and consequently are separated and concentrated before feeding to the oxygen generation process. Solids rejected from the separation step and reduced solids from the oxygen process are returned to the mine area. The plant is powered by nuclear or solar power generators. Vapor-phase water electrolysis, a staged, countercurrent, fluidized bed reduction reactor and a radio-frequency-driven ceramic gas heater are used to improve thermal efficiency.

    Beschreibung: Selective thermal modulation (STM) is a technique which produces a concentration-dependent pulse by selectively modulating a sample in a gas stream. Several types of modulation techniques, both chemical and physical, using adsorption, decomposition, and catalytic and mechanical methods have been developed for use with multiplex gas chromatography. Two of these applications involve selective modulation of the components present in the sample gas stream. The selective modulation of the concentration of specific sample molecules or classes of molecules provides additional analytical selectivity which can lead to selective detection. For some specific applications, the column may even be eliminated. Chemical modulation by absorption of a substance from the sample stream by a stationary phase will also produce a change in the signal intensity. Removal of a substance from the sample stream results in a signal containing a vacancy peak. In the work reported here, a selective thermal modulation technique has been developed as a method for determination of water vapor for possible use in Mars' atmosphere.

    Notizen: Fully automatic three-dimensional mesh generation is a fundamental requirement for automating the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Two techniques in particular - the octree and Delaunay approaches - have been used towards this end. A method that combines both approaches to fully automatic mesh generation is presented here. The resulting algorithm provides the linear growth rate and divide-and-conquer approach of the octree method with the simplicity and optimal properties of the Delaunay triangulation.

    Notizen: Adopting an updated Lagrange approach, the general framework for the fully non-linear analysis of curved shells is developed using a simple quadrilateral C0 model (HMSH5). The governing equations are derived based on a consistent linearization of an incremental mixed variational principle of the modified Hellinger/Reissner type with independent assumptions for displacement and strain fields. Emphasis is placed on devising effective solution procedures to deal with large rotations in space, finite stretches and generalized rate-type material models. In particular, a geometrically exact scheme for configuration update is developed by making use of the so-called exponential mapping algorithm, and the resulting element was shown to exhibit a quadratic rate of (asymptotic) convergence in solving practical shell problems with Newton-Raphson type iterative schemes. For the purpose of updating the spatial stress field of the element, an ‘objective’ generalized midpoint integration rule is utilized, which relies crucially on the concept of polar decomposition for the deformation gradient, and is in keeping with the underlying mixed method. Finally, the effectiveness and practical usefulness of the HMSH5 element are demonstrated through a number of test cases involving beams, plates and shells undergoing very large displacements and rotations.

    Notizen: Some constitutive and computational aspects of finite deformation plasticity are discussed. Attention is restricted to multiplicative theories of plasticity, in which the deformation gradients are assumed to be decomposable into elastic and plastic terms. It is shown by way of consistent linearization of momentum balance that geometric terms arise which are associated with the motion of the intermediate configuration and which in general render the tangent operator non-symmetric even for associated plastic flow. Both explicit (i.e. no equilibrium iteration) and implicit finite element formulations are considered. An assumed strain formulation is used to accommodate the near-incompressibility associated with fully developed isochoric plastic flow. As an example of explicit integration, the rate tangent modulus method is reviewed in some detail. An implicit scheme is derived for which the consistent tangents, resulting in quadratic convergence of the equilibrium iterations, can be written out in closed form for arbitrary material models. All the geometrical terms associated with the motion of the intermediate configuration and the treatment of incompressibility are given explicitly. Examples of application to void growth and coalescence and to crack tip blunting are developed which illustrate the performance of the implicit method.

    Notizen: This study, dealing with model reduction for thermal diffusion, describes the numerical techniques used: the Eitelberg, Marshall and aggregation methods. The non-linear model of a heat transmission tube, to which these methods are applied, is then described, pointing out the necessary initial algebraic treatment for reduction. Finally the outputs of the complete model and of several reduced ones are compared for some characteristic variations of the inputs. For this problem, the Eitelberg and Marshall methods, which can be used with a high coefficient of reduction, are well adapted.
