    Chapter Rereading Italian Travellers to Africa: Precursors, Identities and Interracial Relations in Narratives of Italian Colonialism (2022)

    Description: This essay considers a number of travellers’ writings about Africa which are reread to construct and deconstruct Italian colonial identity. It focuses on Cesare Cesari’s Viaggi africani di Pellegrino Matteucci (1932), which deems Matteucci a precursor of Fascist colonialism and contributor to Fascist “colonial science”. The essay then moves on to explore the more recent rereading by Angelo Del Boca and Igiaba Scego of respectively Indro Montanelli’s XX Battaglione Eritreo (1936) and Errico Emanuelli’s Settimana nera (1961). By bringing together and rereading these texts, the essay maps the transformations of Italianness from colonial to postcolonial times and reveals how colonial identity relied on a series of gender, racial and sexual tropes of exploration and conquest.

    Description: The rediscovery and promotion of fourteen islands in the Aegean Sea – renamed the Dodecanese Islands – annexed to Italy as a military possession while formally under the dominion of the Ottomans, might be considered another phase in the search for an Italian identity. From 1912 to 1943 these islands experienced Italy’s ambiguous presence as invaders and colonizers. This paper aims to highlight the concept of Italianità through the works of Hermes Balducci, one of the protagonists of Italian colonial architecture in the Dodecanese Islands. To this end and using lesser-known material, this case study intends to recreate and redefine the past of the Italian presence on these islands and provide an interesting point of view in the search for a lost and rediscovered Italian spirit.

Body-altering surgeries had profound socio-economic and philosophical consequences. They reached beyond the physical self, and prompted early modern authors to develop searching questions about the nature of body integrity and its relationship to the soul: was the body a part of one’s identity, or a mere ‘prison’ for the mind? How was the body connected to personal morality? What happened to the altered body after death? Drawing on a wide variety of texts including medical treatises, plays, poems, newspaper reports, and travel writings, this volume will argue that the answers to these questions were flexible, divergent, and often surprising, and helped to shape early modern thoughts on philosophy, literature, and the natural sciences.     Description: This work outlines the phenomenon of conversions to Catholicism which took place in Florence between the 17th and 18th century, and starts by reconstructing the history of the House of Catechumens. In the second half of the 17th century, thanks to a noblewoman from Florence’s bequest, the Institute offered hospitality to "infidels" of all origins, and the number of conversions increased considerably. Such liberality ended up causing a serious economic crisis, which the Lorraine Grand Dukes tried to solve in the 18th century by restricting the field of action to Tuscan subjects only. However, there was no lack of abuse and interference by clergymen, especially towards Jews.

We will see how the production and dissemination of an Italian national consciousness and sentiment was based largely on the construction of a “mythical past” through exhibitions, collections, printed works, magazines and institutes dedicated to magnifying the “exploits” of travellers and explorers in the East, from Marco Polo to Giuseppe Tucci.

    Description: Between the 780s and the 840s the episcopal see of Verona was held by bishops coming from beyond the Alps, appointed by the Carolingian rulers and charged with control over a prestigious and strategically key bishopric. They were called upon to boost the communications between the local elites and the political and social machinery of the Carolingian world. In order to achieve that, they first had to negotiate their own integration in their new field of action, and to be acknowledged as effective political mediators between Verona and the rulers. The tools they used to do that were, on the one hand, their own skills and previous experience, on the other, the centre for textual production, preservation and dissemination they found in Verona, that is, the cathedral scriptorium and library. The books that can be attributed to them allow us to keep trace of the networks of relationships and cultural exchanges they developed, linking the two sides of the Alps. This paper focuses more specifically on the activities and endeavours of Bishop Ratold (c. 802-840). The liturgical and hagiographical manuscripts produced in Verona in that period are examined as key markers of Ratold’s intellectual networks, and of the ways in which he used them for his own need for self-integration. They also provide elements casting light on the introduction and reception of the Carolingian cultural reforms in the Kingdom of Italy.

    Description: Ippolito II d’Este (1509-1572), cardinal and prince of Ferrara, played a crucial role in shaping the political and cultural connections between Italy and France. Seen by his contemporaries as staunchly ‘French’, his life rather followed a difficult balance between the political and spatial entities – Rome, Paris, and Ferrara – through which he continuously moved and from which he derived his power. Following his career as cardinal protector of the Valois crown, royal administrator of Siena on behalf of Henry II, and papal legate to France on the eve of the Wars of Religion, this book argues that Ippolito’s apparent diplomatic access ultimately weakened his family’s position in Italy and left it ill-equipped to compete in the changing politics of the peninsula.

    Description: The monograph focuses on a special type of collocations–Support, or Light, Verb Constructions (SVCs). SVCs consist of a semantically reduced verb together with a noun (as the direct object or embedded in a prepositional phrase) that conveys core lexical meaning to the combination. SVCs often vary cross-linguistically, with languages using different strategies to conceptualize the same denotative situations. This study in line with the principles of the Integrated Contrastive Model, aims firstly to offer a corpus-driven contrastive cognitive-semantic description of SVCs in Russian and Italian based on the Construction Grammar model; and secondly to conduct a Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis of the use of Russian SVCs by Italian-speaking students. The findings of this study, in addition to its theoretical significance, may be useful in teaching Russian as a foreign language and could be of interest for lexicography.

    Description: The book analyses the history of the Jesuat congregation, highlighting the elements of connection and comparison with the social contexts, then describing the origin and the most ancient events of the female branch of the congregation, and the memory of the meeting between the "founder" of the Jesuats and the "foundress" of the Gesuate. The iconographic memory of the initiator of the congregation, Giovani Colombini, the collection of the lauds of the Jesuat Bianco da Siena, and the fortune of the 15th-century Life of Giovanni Colombini, written by Feo Belcari, are also investigated. Then the research reconstructs the constellation of groups, religious experiments and bearers of ideas and devotions that were linked to the Jesuats and, in particular, to the convents of Milan, Siena, Lucca, Venice and Rome and the sanctuaries managed by the congregation. The congregational sociability is analysed along its lines: the practice of work as pharmacists and the cultivation of spiritual friendships with prominent people such as the Countess of Guastalla, Lodovica Torelli. Finally, the erudite use of Colombini's Epistolario as a language text is studied. The volume closes with a documentary appendix on the Jesuat convent of Chiusi.

Although numerous, studies on this phenomenon that had such a profound influence on the political, social and religious history of the late Middle Ages and the early modern age in Europe can never be enough. At this time the political regimes were actively involved in the witch hunts, not least the Catholic church which was intensely engaged in developing instruments of control aimed at governing and curbing dissent. The book is broken down into thematic sections – rules, treatises and trials, transmission /possession – which reflect the multiplicity of the scientific proposals that have emerged in recent years, and also represent a conscious preliminary orientation of possible readings. At centre stage of the witchcraft show are the witches and their judges, from the theologians and philosophers to the exorcists. As well as addressing actual events, the book also explores the nature of the beliefs and the way in which they were transmitted in the various social strata, and the phenomenon of diabolical possession which conveyed the message of the presence of the devil in the world.

    Description: This research focuses on the d’Este cardinals’ diplomatic and religious actions and on their role as mediators between Italy and France. The objective is to uncover the geopolitical foundations of their actions whilst highlighting the different scales thereof. The presence of Ippolito II and Luigi d’Este is studied both in terms of their material presence and their participation in the political stakes of the time. Finally, by examining their modus operandi on the international scene, this study argues that a Catholic identity is emerging which is not heterodox for which crossing the mountains leads to readjustments in manners of expressing and representing the Catholic faith.

    Description: The volume contains the transcription of the reports presented at the International Conference held in Florence on 14th and 15th June 2012: there are 15 original essays, written (upon request) by authoritative scholars of various Italian and foreign universities, on the important contributions made by their papyrus finds over more than a century to the knowledge of the lost works by Aeschylus and Sophocles, as well as on the value of the papyri for the constitution of the text of their preserved tragedies. The essays are equally divided between Aeschylus and Sophocles, and touch on all the major questions which the study of papyrology has raised for the philological and literary research on the two great tragedy writers. Both for the prestige of the authors and for the variety of the topics addressed, the volume offers an interesting and authoritative picture of the 'state of the art' of the studies in this regard, in light of the interrelationships between papyrology and Greek literature.

    Description: Antinoupolis III, yet another volume having as its object an extremely important archaeological area in Graeco-Roman Egypt: the city founded on the left bank of the Nile in 130 AD by Hadrian in honour of Antinoos. Over 700 pages constitute the two volumes of this publication. The first volume proposes several studies on archaeological materials, such as African sealed ceramics, locally produced wine amphorae (LRA 7), stone mortars, sporadic fragments of ornamental stones, a cup with a glass-painted inside, fabrics of the so-called 'Coptic' type, as well as analysis of forensic anthropology on the bone remains of a certain Theodosia, whose funeral chapel had been discovered and illustrated in the excavations conducted on the site of the University of Florence in the mid-1930s. In the second volume, there are editions of new papyri, parchments and ostraka, with texts based on documents from everyday life or from the Classical and Christian literary culture. The involved languages are Ancient Greek, Coptic and Arabic. The inscriptions in these three languages, most of them funerary, bring forth significant novelties. The documentation is evidence of the life which, especially in the late ancient age, carried on in the remains of a large metropolis located in Egypt, one of the most important provinces of the Roman empire.

    Description: The Kalush are the last Kafirs (pagans) of Hindu Kush and speak an Indo-European language, which makes them a particularly precious resource for the Indo-European scholar. This thesis offers an in-depth study of their language and of some aspects of their culture. Starting from the data collected during a field study in the least well-known of the three Kalasha valleys, on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the author proposes a contrastive analysis of the everyday language and that used for poetry. This analysis, and the mass of ethnographic data considered, enable the author to identify the socio-cultural reasons behind certain linguistic choices that can be observed in the poetic discourse, thus bringing to light the essence of the relations between language and culture.

    Description: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man presents a non-linear compositional progression, characterised by continual fractures, bifurcations and revisions; the genetic dossier includes pre-compositional notes and works that were never published, such as Epiphanies, A Portrait of the Artist and Stephen Hero. The genetic analysis of this long process of writing, the documentation of which covers a period of around fourteen years, reveals not only how the Portrait was conceived and composed, but also Joyce's evolution as a writer from the very first evidence of his literary activity. This new perspective on Joyce's mode of composition opens the way to a range of potential interpretations of the individual texts, as well as methodological and theoretical insights regarding genetic criticism.

    Description: This book investigates the linguistic and formal aspects of more than a thousand requests for justice and protection preserved in Egyptian papyri of the Roman Principate, mainly written in Greek. For many centuries in Egypt, from the Ptolemaic period to the late Roman Empire, petitions addressed to the judicial authorities shared the same textual structure and made use of recurring lexical formulas. Such uniformity was the result of the adherence by scribes and legal advisers to repertoires that had wide circulation. This study evaluates the correspondence between the formulas of the petitions and legislation, normative conventions, and spoken and literary language, and how these factors interacted with each other over the centuries.

The setting up of the working group on Electronic Publishing, co-ordinated by the University of Florence, formalised this interest, stimulating the analysis of the state of the art in this field in Italy, the opportunities which it offered to the academic world and the definition of possible lines of development. The "Recommendations" comprised in this publication are addressed to the delegates of the Chancellors of the Italian universities and their collaborators, and intended to provide information and suggestions for the development of electronic publishing initiatives. They are consequently designed not only as a tool for help and guidance for those who are already moving in the direction of a University publishing initiative, but also as an invitation to reflect on the importance that electronic publishing is acquiring for the teaching and scientific activities of the future.

    Description: The article consists of two intertwined sections. In the first, I intend to reconstruct the processes of political and social transformation that took place in Lucca under the actions of Bishops Berengar (837-843) and Ambrose (843-852): foreigners appointed in succession by the Court. In order to do this, I will take the viewpoint offered by the numerous private charters preserved in the Archivio Storico Diocesano of Lucca. Secondly, I will present the first results of a study on the manuscripts of the same period preserved there – an heritage not yet fully explored and appreciated. I will focus in particular on the most-recently entered text in ms 490: the so-called Dicta Gelasii papae. It was written in a Carolingian hand that Armando Petrucci has compared to that of Bishop Berengar. The text constitutes an exceptional insight into the turmoil that animated the sacred palace after the «penitential reform» of 813, and which spread throughout the Empire within a general movement of correctio.

    Description: This article offers an overview of the readings of Marco Polo’s ventures offered to the Italian public opinion during the Fascist era. Marco Polo’s image was adapted to the needs of patriotic pedagogy, propaganda of Fascist values and colonial aspirations, and the attempt to redefine Rome’s political, economic and cultural role in the world. In a complex mix of academic and popular readings, the official discourse transformed the Venetian traveller into a symbol of Italianness in China in order to legitimize Fascist Italy’s ambitions and expectations and stress its distinct identity in comparison with the other western powers. Although Chinese reception of this discourse was limited by several factors at that time, this process certainly helped establish Marco Polo’s iconic significance in Sino-Italian cultural diplomacy well into the twentieth century.

    Chapter Medici Ambitions and Fascist Policies. (Re)reading the Relations between Italy and the Levant in the 1930s through the Historiography on Fakhr al-Dīn II (2022)

    Description: On 13 April 1635, Druze emir Fakhr al-Dīn Maʿn was executed in Constantinople, after years of ambiguous relations with the Ottoman sultan. Exactly three centuries later, a biography of the emir was published in Rome, edited by Maronite father Paolo Carali and financed by the Fascist government. The reason why Fascism was interested in his figure can be traced back to the policy implemented by Italy in the 1930s, which sought to penetrate the territories of Lebanon and Syria. However, these were regions in which Fascist Italy had no real interest or claim, and so it sought to build a tie between the Levant and Italy by rereading the historiography of the relationship between “Faccardino” and Medici Tuscany at the beginning of the seventeenth century. By comparing the policies of the Medici and Fascism, it will be possible to highlight how, through Carali’s work, the latter sought to construct a history that would support its ambitions towards the eastern Mediterranean.

Young generations in the chinese community in Prato have used them as a tool for knowledge and communitarian transformation.     Description: The analysis of the two versions of the life of Pope Sergius II (844-847) published by Louis Duchesne in his edition of the Liber pontificalis aims at identifying and discussing the tools developed by the Lateran to illustrate the relationship between the Apostolic See and Carolingian power at the time of the Emperor Lothair. I will first present the two versions of the life of Sergius and their circulation, then highlight the rhetorical strategies employed by the author to diminish the political significance of Louis II’s journey to Rome (844). Secondly, I will refer to the second part of the so-called Farnesianus version of the life of Sergius II. In this particular section, the author, before the incomplete report of the Saracen raid on the mouth of the Tiber and the sack of St. Peter's Basilica (846), critically describes the pontificate of Sergius II, dominated by the negative figure of the pontiff's brother, Benedict, who imposed his tyranny over Rome and its territory on behalf of the emperor (most likely as a missus on the imperial side). In this regard, it is interesting to evaluate which are the concealed arguments introduced here to represent the alleged effects of the application of the Constitutio Romana (824) on the socio-political structures of the city and on the history of the Roman Church, to offer a hypothesis on the context of the composition of this version of the life of Sergius II. In particular, I will dwell on the denouncing of the simoniacal heresy, shown to be have been triumphant during the pontificate of Sergius II, as sign of the re-emergence in Rome of a theme particularly strongly felt among the Carolingian reformers, and one which can perhaps be most associated with the pontificate of Sergius’ successor Leo IV (847-855).

In Walpole’s Britain, for example, “the argument from the Chinese”—namely, the admiration for a prosperous and densely populated kingdom which did not belong to a single faith—was frequently used in religious disputes when claiming a wider or more coherent policy of tolerance or seeking to cut down the prerogatives of the clerical hierarchies.     Chapter Representations of Lothar I in the Liber pontificalis Ravennatis (2022)

    Description: Lothar looms large in the Liber pontificalis of Ravenna, an episcopal gesta composed after 846 by a local cleric of that city named Agnellus. In its prefatory verse, Lothar was tied to the memory of his grandfather Charlemagne, and afterwards was presented as an ally of the city and its church, a relationship sealed by the service of the bishop George (837-846) as godfather to Lothar’s daughter Rotruda. Furthermore, upon the death of Louis the Pious, as part of an embassy attempting to resolve the conflicts between Lothar and his brothers, George sought to affirm Ravenna privileges on the eve of the battle of Fontenoy, an event described quite differently from other sources. Completed following these struggles, the Liber pontificalis of Ravenna used this image of Lothar to further claims of the special status of the city, especially in its independence from Rome and longstanding imperial connections, and actively sought to legitimize Lothar’s own position through a juxtaposition with Charlemagne. Although preserved in the accounts of the bishops of Ravenna, the singular efforts to elevate and memorialize Lothar differ from other contemporary institutional chronicles, and underscore the tension inherent in the narrative.

    Description: The long-running jurisdictional dispute between the patriarchs of Aquileia and Grado entered a period of particular activity in the 820s, culminating in a judicial decision in Aquileia’s favor at the Council of Mantua in 827. This council and its consequences offer fertile ground for exploring the ways that texts figured in ecclesiastical conflicts in ninth-century Italy. Recent work has shed light on the role hagiographical texts played in this dispute. This chapter examines another “textual” dimension: the role of canons and canon-law norms in arguments and decisions, in the “courtroom” and beyond. The chapter concludes with brief discussion of a different case, from Lucca, that shows with particular clarity the close connection that could exist between canon law in the manuscripts and in legal practice.

    Description: At the end of the nineteenth century, Italy welcomed an official embassy sent by the government in Tokyo to make Japan more integrated into the new world scene it was entering. The cultural and political elites of the peninsula had the chance to discover, or rather rediscover, the charm of a world that had been lost over the centuries. This essay aims to reflect on the means and meanings of this late nineteenth-century encounter. Indeed, from this moment onwards, Japan increasingly became part of Italian mental horizons, in particular through the rereading and reuse of two precedents dating back to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that saw the two countries dialogue and “discover” each other for the first time.

As a result, philosophers throughout antiquity tackled the problem of subjective time and its relation to the physical time of the cosmos. The present book gives an account of this debate.     Description: The calls for the appointment of the liturgical officers, that is, those who were obliged by the state to carry out public service duties, constitute a category of documents produced within the Roman administration of Egypt in the second and third centuries AD; these public notices were issued by the strategus, head of a region. It is a homogeneous group of Greek papyri - about twenty, including two unpublished texts - collected for the first time in this volume: a transcription is provided for each liturgical call, accompanied by the translation and a commentary. Through the comparative analysis of the texts, interesting data emerge to determine the typology of the documents and to reconstruct the development of some procedures of the liturgical system during the second and third centuries AD.

    Description: Practise in oral interview for recording experiences nurtured during Resistance was early as it was carried on firstly by Silvio Micheli. However, neither Micheli or the Historical Institutes for Resistance studies have been privileged military topics over the other ones. Resistance indeed did not resolve itself only on a military basis. Afterwards, historical research dealt with partisans' daily lives: it showed the human dimension of Resistance as well as difficulties met by partisans, who were politically immature as they were grown during Fascism. Among this new kind of research, the contribute will deal with historical witnesses such as Calegari and Bermani. The pair indeed was characterised by two different way of behaviour.

    Description: The summary highlights the extent to which the articles collected here go beyond previous research on bishops and open up new perspectives: The contributions no longer only ask about the "hard power" of bishops. Instead, they focus on episcopal "soft power": they impressively show that bishops knew how to use books, pen and ink to manipulate ideas and convictions and to reframe discourses. A basis for this new approach is provided by the scans of medieval manuscripts, which are now made available by libraries in Europe in large numbers and excellent quality.

    Description: The Memorial for the Italian died in nazi camps is an artistic masterpiece commissioned in 1979 by the National Association Former Prisoneers in nazi camp. It was inagurated in 1980 in the National Auschwitz Museum as permanent Italian exhibition. In 2008, the museum board launched a complain about the italian exhibition: its complexion was full of echoes about the Italian Resistance. Hence, it was judged ununderstandable but also politically dangerous as Poland changed regime after 1989. In 2011, the Museum closed the italian exhibition and the National Association moved it in Florence. The paper describe how the exhibition was opened and how it worked as a tool for present time.

    Description: Summer of 1968: two young Spaniards arrive in Rome with a letter and a project to export. They are Francisco (Kiko) Argüello and Carmen Hernández. So, fifty years after its foundation, the Neocatechumenal Way begins, and this volume is among the first historiographical researches about it. The overall picture arising from the comparative analysis of archival documents and unpublished texts places the Neocatechumenal Way within the historical events that affected the Church of Rome from the end of the Second Vatican Council to the present today. From the study of a minor reality, the work aims at shedding light on more general questions: from the reception of the Second Vatican Council to the relations between the episcopates; from the publication of the New Dutch Catechism to the organized entrance of laymen and laity in the Church; from the liturgical reform to 'liturgical liberalism'.

    Description: This paper seeks to trace the developments which led the Church of Modena and its bishops to acquire a pre-eminent position in its diocese in the second half of the ninth century and for much of the following one. The analysis sets out from the highly fragmented post-Roman territorial context and from the efforts made by Lombard kings, which were mostly directed towards the fiscal estate of Cittanova, rather than the ancient Roman civitas of Mutina. Particular attention is paid to the figure of Bishop Leodoin and to the manuscripts attributed to him in the Chapter Library, especially the famous Codex legum (O.I.2), for which a different production context is suggested, prior to its acquisition by the Church of Modena.
