Notes: Abstract We determine the inseparability graphs of uniform oriented matroids and of graphic oriented matroids. For anyr, n such that 4≦r≦n−3, examples of rankr uniform oriented matroids onn elements with a given inseparability graph are obtained by simple constructions of polytopes having prescribed separation properties.

Notes: Abstract The matroid matching problem (also known as matroid parity problem) has been intensively studied by several authors. Starting from very special problems, in particular the matching problem and the matroid intersection problem, good characterizations have been obtained for more and more general classes of matroids. The two most recent ones are the class of representable matroids and, later on, the class of algebraic matroids (cf. [4] and [2]). We present a further step of generalization, showing that a good characterization can also be obtained for the class of socalled pseudomodular matroids, introduced by Björner and Lovász (cf. [1]). A small counterexample is included to show that pseudomodularity still does not cover all matroids that behave well with respect to matroid matching.

Notes: Abstract In his thesis [3] M. J. Piff conjectured that a matroid, which is algebraic over a fieldFit) witht transcendent overF, must be algebraic overF. Two proofs have appeared, one by Shameeva [5] and another one by the author [2], but both are unsatisfactory. In this paper I will settle conjecture by applying a theorem of Seidenberg.

Notes: Abstract Quadratic programming, symmetry, positive (semi) definiteness and the linear complementary problem were generalized by Morris and Todd to oriented matroids. Todd gave a constructive solution for the quadratic programming problem of oriented matroids. Using Las Vergnas' lexicographic extension and Bland's basic tableau construction Todd generalized Lemke's quadratic programming algorithm for this problem. Here some generalizations of Terlaky's finite criss-cross method are presented for oriented matroid quadratic programming. These algorithms are based on the smallest subscript rule and on sign patterns, and do not preserve feasibility on any subsets. In fact two variants of the generalized criss-cross method are presented. Finally two special cases (oriented matroid linear programming and the definite case) are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We state the following conjecture and prove it for the case whereq is a proper prime power: Let A be a nonsingular n by n matrix over the finite field GFqq≧4, then there exists a vector x in (GFq)n such that both x and Ax have no zero component.

Notes: Abstract LetF be a collection of 3-connected matroids which is (3, 1)-rounded, that is, whenever a 3-connected matroidM has a minor in F ande is an element ofM, thenM has a minor in F whose ground set contains.e. The aim of this note is to prove that, for all sufficiently largen, the collection ofn-element 3-connected matroids having some minor inF is also (3, 1)-rounded.

Notes: Abstract We describe facets of the cones of alternating set functions and cut submodular set functions generated by directed and undirected graphs and by uniform even hypergraphs. This answers a question asked by L. Lovász at the Bonn Mathematical Programming Conference in 1982. We show that there is a network flow algorithm for minimizing a hypergraph cut set function.

Notes: Some results connected with a simple mathematical model of infectious disease are discussed in order to demonstrate the approach to the modelling of such real processes. A more complicated model of antiviral immune response is presented. A new modification of this model in which targets for the viruses are immunocompetent cells is suggested.
