Notizen: Abstract A one-parameter family of derivative free multipoint iterative methods of orders three and four are derived for finding the simple and multiple roots off(x)=0. For simple roots, the third order methods require three function evaluations while the fourth order methods require four function evaluations. For multiple roots, the third order methods require six function evaluations while the fourth order methods require eight function evaluations. Numerical results show the robustness of these methods.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of the nonparallelism of the boundary layer flow over a flat plate on its stability characteristics has been investigated by several authors, and it was claimed that the results of the theoretical calculations are already in good agreement with the experimental observations. However, this is not true. In this paper, this problem is reinvestigated, using two different methods. It is found that within the framework of linear theory, the theoretical results are in fact not in good agreement with the experimental observations. To settle this problem, nonlinear effect must be taken into consideration.

Notizen: Abstract The problem of the stability and adaptability of regulatory processes is considered, taking as a point of departure N. P. Bekhtereva's theory regarding stable pathological states, and inflexible and adaptable links in control systems. The need to introduce a probabilistic approach is emphasized. Generalizations are made on materials relating to the connectability of the separate components of the biorhythms of functional systems, and to the stability of their amplitude-frequency characteristics. The corpus of facts permitted the successful development in clinical practice of functional biocontrol and feedback.

Notizen: Summary Ten to 20 spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars of Israeli origin were grown in three winter (normal) and two summer (abnormal) growing seasons. During the period of emergence to anthesis mean daily temperature was on the average 12°C higher and photoperiod was about 3 h longer in the summer than in the winter. Data was collected on the durations of the periods from emergence to double-ridge (GS1), double ridge to anthesis (GS2) and anthesis to grain maturation (GS3), as well as on yield and yield components. The duration of all developmental stages was reduced by high temperature. While the duration of GS2 was the most thermo-sensitive, it may also have been reduced by the longer summer photoperiod. The effect of photoperiod on GS2 could not be isolated, but the results were interpreted to show that the effect of photoperiod on the duration of GS2 was relatively small. The most heat-affected yield component was number of grains per spikelet and the least affected component was the number of spikes per plant. High temperature reduced grain weight via reduced grain growth duration and not grain growth rate. A general linear regression model of yield on its components revealed that while variation for number of spikes per plant had the greatest effect on yield variation among cultivars in the winter, variation for number of grains per spikelet and spikelets per spike were by far the most important in the summer. Grain weight was the least important component, in this respect, in all seasons. Varieties which sustained the highest yield in hot environments were able to maintain the longest duration of GS2 and the highest number of grain per spike.

Notizen: Abstract Biannual sampling (March and September) has been carried out over the period 1972 to 1985 at a muddy sand station, 55 m depth, with fauna belonging to the deeper offshore edge of Petersen's Amphiura filiformis community. During the period 1974 to 1980 the community exhibited a high degree of persistence stability. This stability was lost between 1980 and 1983, with rising total numbers and biomass and changes in species ranking. There is some evidence of a downward reversal between 1984–85. Evidence suggests that the principal stabilising process is density dependent mortality mediated by competition in a food limited environment. The principal destabilising process appears to be periodic fluctuations in the organic flux to the bottom. A secondary destabilising process is clearly concerned with fluctuating winter temperature. In competitive terms, cold winters favour increased survival in the dominant species at the expense of the lesser ranked species. This process is, however, more ephemeral and subject to adjustment within the time scale of a year.

Notizen: Abstract The anharmonic oscillator under combined sinusoidal and white noise excitation is studied using the Gaussian closure approximation. The mean response and the steady-state variance of the system is obtained by the WKBJ approximation and also by the Fokker-Planck equation. The multiple steadystate solutions are obtained and their stability analysis is presented. Numerical results are obtained for a particular set of system parameters. The theoretical results are compared with a digital simulation study to bring out the usefulness of the present approximate theory.

    Thema: Mathematik
Notizen: Abstract Using the concept of Φ-conjugate functions, a wide class of nonconvex optimization problems can be investigated. By generalized Lagrangians, the problems indicated and a generalized notion of stability can be treated. It is possible to give duality theorems for these problems such that the approach given by Rockafellar (1967) for convex problems can be extended to the nonconvex case.

Notizen: Abstract Self-bounded controlled and self-hidden conditioned invariant subspaces, recently introduced by the authors for a more direct and neat handling of some fundamental concepts of the geometric approach, such as controllability subspaces, are proved in this paper to be very useful tools also in dealing with synthesis problems with stability requirements. Definitions concerning stability of invariants and stabilizability of controlled invariants, simple and self-bounded, are first presented and discussed. In particular, it is shown that a more straightforward definition for controlled invariant stabilizability allows a simpler development of the theory, Then, some fundamental results relating self-boundedness to stabilizability are derived. For the sake of completeness, all statements are dualized to conditioned invariants, simple and self-hidden.

    Thema: Mathematik
Notizen: Abstract The development of flexible manufacturing systems calls for industrial robots characterized by robustness of performance with regard to the variations of the loads and real time specification of the trajectory in the work space. In this paper, the design of a feedback controller guaranteeing such performance is considered. At first, the manipulator dynamics are embedded into a larger class of uncertain dynamical systems and a class of feedback controls is proposed that guarantees uniform ultimate boundedness of the tracking error. Successively, the methodology is specialized for the case of robotic manipulators to track trajectories described in task-oriented coordinates; the proposed control algorithm operates without requiring any explicit coordinate transformation.
