Shales have been a major focus of the energy industry over the past few decades. Recently, there is a paradigm shift in the energy industry to low-carbon solutions, such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), to mitigate global warming caused by carbon footprint. The problem of long-term safe and efficient geological CO2 storage (GCS) and caprock integrity are some of the major challenges impeding large-scale CCS application. Here, we investigated how localized and bulk biogeomechanical alterations could potentially impact caprock integrity and CO2 storage in depleted shale reservoirs. We cultivated the shale core samples (containing both artificial-induced and pre-existing natural fractures) with a cultured microbial solution at specific temperature, time, and growth conditions. Subsequently, we obtain the properties of the fractured shale rock samples impacted by this microbial process. We investigate the impact of the mechanical responses due to the microbial process, on the long-term integrity and storage potentials of CO2 in shale reservoirs. Our results suggest that in Eagle Ford, Marcellus, and Niobrara shale formations, microbially-altered local and bulk mechanical properties can enhance the long-term caprock integrity and CO2 storage security by: (1.) Increasing the localized (+19% unconfined compressive strength, −20% Poisson’s ratio, +35% fracture toughness) and bulk (+50% unconfined compressive strength, −13% Poisson’s ratio) mechanical integrity; (2.) Decreasing permeability (−93%) and porosity (−38%); (3.) Altering the clay mineral content (−56%), calcite content (+21%), and morphology; (4.) Occluding microfractures; and (5.) Mitigating any potential leakage to the atmosphere through the caprock. This study considers the heterogeneity of shales, and provide valuable insights and viable assessment in solving the long-term GCS application in depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs.

    Description: In the present work, an untargeted metabolomic approach based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC–HRMS) was performed for the discrimination of 25 accessions of white quinoa from main production zones of Peru. From the fingerprint analysis, a total of eighty-four metabolites were tentatively identified based on their accurate mass measurements and MS/MS data. Among them, forty-six compounds are reported here for the first time in C. quinoa (eight phenolics, one ecdysteroid, and thirty-seven saponins), twenty-four of them would correspond to new structures. Principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were used to analyze the metabolomic data. As a result, the samples were distributed into two groups. The compounds contributing to the differences between these groups were identified by S-plot analysis.

    Description: Highlights • UAV-based thermal imaging allows precise mapping of diffusive thermal water discharge. • High tidal ranges affect fluid flow and promote larger thermal anomaly. • The La Jolla thermal anomaly is caused by a discharge of 330 ± 44 L s−1 of thermal water. • The La Jolla advective heat output (40.5 ± 5.2 MWt) can power a desalinization plant. The exploration of unexploited geothermal resources is required to encourage the use of renewable energy. This study focuses on La Jolla beach, Ensenada, Mexico. The beach hosts a thermal anomaly with temperatures of up to 52 °C at the surface and up to 93 °C at 20 cm depth. The objectives were to: map the thermal anomaly, understand the impact of tides, quantify the thermal water discharge rate and heat output, and discuss a direct use of the energy. The mapping was performed with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles equipped with optical and thermal cameras at two different dates. Additional temperature measurements were performed with a thermocouple, while the total fluid discharge was estimated from flow measurements. A comparison between the campaigns indicated that the highest surface temperature area was more than three times larger in 2019 than in 2018 (259 m2 vs. 69 m2). Such change was due to the tidal range and associated hydrostatic pressure variations. The total thermal water discharge is 330 ± 44 L s−1, which corresponds to an advective heat output of 40.5 ± 5.2 MWt. The use of this energy in a Multi-Effect Distillation desalinization plant can contribute to cover the shortage of freshwater in Ensenada.

    Description: The Neolithic Revolution began approximately 10,000 years ago and is characterized by the ultimate, nearly complete transition from hunting and gathering to agricultural food production on land. The Neolithic Revolution is thought to have been catalyzed by a combination of local population pressure, cultural diffusion, property rights and climate change. We undertake a thought experiment that examines trends in these key hypothesized catalysts of the Neolithic Revolution and patterns of today to explore whether society could be on a path towards another paradigm shift in food production: away from hunting of wild fish towards a transition to mostly fish farming. We find similar environmental and cultural pressures have driven the rapid rise of aquaculture, during a period that has now been coined the Blue Revolution, providing impetus for such a transition in coming decades to centuries (as opposed to millennia). However, we also highlight the interacting and often mutually reinforcing impacts of 1) technological and scientific advancements, 2) environmental awareness and collective action and 3) globalization and trade influencing the trajectory and momentum of the Blue Revolution from patterns and processes of the Neolithic Revolution. We present two qualitative narratives that broadly fall within two future trajectories of seafood production: 1) a ubiquitous aquaculture transition and 2) commercial aquaculture and fisheries coexistence. Each narrative contains two sub-narratives based on differing management and regulatory strategies for aquaculture and fisheries. This scenarios approach aims to encourage logical, forward thinking, and innovative solutions to complex systems’ dynamics. Scenario-based thought experiments are useful to explore large scale questions, increase the accessibility to a wider readership, and ideally catalyze discussion around proactive governance mechanisms. We argue the future is not fixed and society now has greater foresight and capacity to choose the workable balance between fisheries and aquaculture that supports economic, environmental, cultural and social objectives through combined planning, policies, and management.

    Description: Accurate and reliable biodiversity estimates of marine zooplankton are a prerequisite to understand how changes in diversity can affect whole ecosystems. Species identification in the deep sea is significantly impeded by high numbers of new species and decreasing numbers of taxonomic experts, hampering any assessment of biodiversity. We used in parallel morphological, genetic, and proteomic characteristics of specimens of calanoid copepods from the abyssal South Atlantic to test if proteomic fingerprinting can accelerate estimating biodiversity. We cross-validated the respective molecular discrimination methods with morphological identifications to establish COI and proteomic reference libraries, as they are a pre-requisite to assign taxonomic information to the identified molecular species clusters. Due to the high number of new species only 37% of the individuals could be assigned to species or genus level morphologically. COI sequencing was successful for 70% of the specimens analysed, while proteomic fingerprinting was successful for all specimens examined. Predicted species richness based on morphological and molecular methods was 42 morphospecies, 56 molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) and 79 proteomic operational taxonomic units (POTUs), respectively. Species diversity was predicted based on proteomic profiles using hierarchical cluster analysis followed by application of the variance ratio criterion for identification of species clusters. It was comparable to species diversity calculated based on COI sequence distances. Less than 7% of specimens were misidentified by proteomic profiles when compared with COI derived MOTUs, indicating that unsupervised machine learning using solely proteomic data could be used for quickly assessing species diversity.

    Description: Whakaari/White Island is a partially submerged, offshore andesite island volcano, located at the northern end of the Taupō Volcanic Zone. Since the late 1960s, volcanic activity has alternated between quiescence, unrest, and eruption on short timescales. For this review we compiled extensive observational records, examined the rich scientific literature, and use newly acquired data, to understand the broad volcanic history and system dynamics. Based on recent bathymetry data, we propose a distinction exists between the Whakaari edifice and Te Paepae o Aotea/Volkner Rocks, which were previously considered to be part of the same edifice. Geochemical analyses of scoria samples from the island have been used to build a magma system model where dominantly andesitic-dacitic magma is periodically intruded by basalt. More dynamic processes are recorded in the hydrothermal system, where the location and activity of fumarolic features have been ephemeral and the crater lake has varied in scale over short time intervals. Eruptions of the dominantly andesitic magma have historically been small and range from phreatomagmatic through to magmatic, largely depositing ash and scoria to a restricted distance that is confined to the main crater floor. Phreatic eruptions are the most common eruption style, based on recently observed and monitored activity.

    Description: Iron (Fe) is the fourth most abundant element in the earth’s crust and plays important roles in both biological and chemical processes. The redox reactivity of various Fe(II) forms has gained increasing attention over recent decades in the areas of (bio) geochemistry, environmental chemistry and engineering, and material sciences. The goal of this paper is to review these recent advances and the current state of knowledge of Fe(II) redox chemistry in the environment. Specifically, this comprehensive review focuses on the redox reactivity of four types of Fe(II) species including aqueous Fe(II), Fe(II) complexed with ligands, minerals bearing structural Fe(II), and sorbed Fe(II) on mineral oxide surfaces. The formation pathways, factors governing the reactivity, insights into potential mechanisms, reactivity comparison, and characterization techniques are discussed with reference to the most recent breakthroughs in this field where possible. We also cover the roles of these Fe(II) species in environmental applications of zerovalent iron, microbial processes, biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients, and their abiotic oxidation related processes in natural and engineered systems.

    Description: Intense, southward low-level winds are common in Nares Strait, between Ellesmere Island and northern Greenland. The steep topography along Nares Strait leads to channelling effects, resulting in an along-strait flow. This research study presents a 30-year climatology of the flow regime from simulations of the COSMO-CLM climate model. The simulations are available for the winter periods (November–April) 1987/88 to 2016/17, and thus, cover a period long enough to give robust long-term characteristics of Nares Strait. The horizontal resolution of 15 km is high enough to represent the complex terrain and the meteorological conditions realistically. The 30-year climatology shows that LLJs associated with gap flows are a climatological feature of Nares Strait. The maximum of the mean 10-m wind speed is around 12 m s-1 and is located at the southern exit of Smith Sound. The wind speed is strongly related to the pressure gradient. Single events reach wind speeds of 40 m s-1 in the daily mean. The LLJs are associated with gap flows within the narrowest parts of the strait under stably stratified conditions, with the main LLJ occurring at 100–250 m height. With increasing mountain Froude number, the LLJ wind speed and height increase. The frequency of strong wind events (〉20 m s-1 in the daily mean) for the 10 m wind shows a strong interannual variability with an average of 15 events per winter. Channelled winds have a strong impact on the formation of the North Water polynya.

Shale gas reservoirs, with typically ultra-low permeabilities, have been a major focus of hydrocarbon production over the past few decades. In this paper, we investigated how biogeomechanical alteration of near-wellbore properties could potentially impact hydrocarbon recovery from low-permeability reservoirs, using Wolfcamp shale and Niobrara shale formations. We first obtained the geomechanical properties using the scratch test method, in addition to the mineralogical, microstructural, and porosity and permeability measurements of the shale gas samples. Subsequently, we treated the core samples with a cultured microbial solution at distinct conditions. Further, we obtained the corresponding new geomechanical properties, in addition to the new mineralogical, microstructural, and porosity measurements of the samples impacted by the process. Finally, we showed the implications of the altered near-wellbore properties for hydrocarbon recovery from shale gas reservoirs. Our results suggest that in shale gas reservoirs, microbial-induced alterations of near well-bore properties could temporally reduce its mechanical integrity (Wolfcamp shale = −21% unconfined compressive strength, −42% scratch toughness; Niobrara shale = −24% unconfined compressive strength, −14% scratch toughness), increase porosity (+43%) and permeability (+6430%), and impact the microstructural and mineralogical properties. The near-wellbore biogeomechanical alterations could potentially improve hydrocarbon recovery by enhancing: (1.) the susceptibility for induced fractures to nucleate and propagate during reservoir-stimulation; (2.) flow pathways to improve hydrocarbon recovery.

    Description: Both chemical and isotopic compositions of volcanic plumes are highly useful in evaluating the present status of active volcanoes. Monitoring their temporal changes can facilitate the forecasts of volcanic activity as well. In the present study, we developed a drone-borne automatic sampler for volcanic plumes in which an output signal from a sulfur dioxide (SO2) sensor triggered a pump to collect samples when its SO2 concentration exceeded a predefined threshold. First, we tested the automatic sampler while holding the device by hand at Iwo-yama volcano, Kirishima volcanic complex, Japan, where the fumaroles were accessible. Second, we fitted the sampler on a drone at Nakadake central cone, Aso volcano, Japan, where only the crater rim was accessible. In both sampling campaigns, good consistency in isotope ratios (2H/1H) of molecular hydrogen (H2) between samples collected by the automatic sampler and those collected directly into pre-evacuated flasks was obtained. Furthermore, by using the drone-borne sampler at Aso volcano, we obtained plume samples with higher concentrations of H2 and carbon dioxide than those taken directly into flasks at the crater rim. Our sampler can be utilized to collect volcanic plume samples for the determination of stable isotopic compositions in general by subsequent laboratory analysis and the remote establishment of fumarole outlet temperature based on the 2H/1H ratios of hydrogen, including their temporal changes.

    Description: Volcaniclastic stratigraphy can be difficult to map and describe due to its complex nature. However, such stratigraphy preserves information about fluctuations in volcanic activity and sedimentation and is vital to understanding volcanic systems. Uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) based analysis of volcanic stratigraphy can enhance mapping and analysis, especially on vertical surfaces where outcrop exposure is greatest. Here we present a method for using small UAVs to produce vertical grain size and bedding measurement logs, or quantitative stratigraphic columns, of vertical volcaniclastic stratigraphy. We demonstrate the range of high-accuracy measurements and parameters that can be collected for building measurement logs using consumer grade UAVs through a case study in the Marysvale volcanic field where we collected 34,422 grain measurements from 21 individual units. The purpose of producing such measurement logs is to enhance lithofacies analysis through the use of large quantitative datasets and improve the reproducibility of data reporting. Whereas descriptions of volcaniclastic units such as those describing grading are often reported qualitatively, we describe methods for calculating numerical parameters for enhanced lithologic analysis including grain size, grading, clast to matrix ratios, and shape characteristics. The methods described in this paper can enhance field data acquisition, mapping, and quantitative analysis of volcaniclastic deposits and are applicable to a wide range of other geologic settings where coarse-grained clastic sedimentary deposits exist.

    Description: Seismic techniques are the main monitoring tools for CO2 storage projects, especially in saline aquifers with good porosity. The majority of existing commercial and pilot CO2 injections have resulted in clear time-lapse seismic anomalies that can be used for leakage detection as well as refinement of the reservoir models to conform with the monitoring observations. Both tasks are legal requirements imposed on site operators. This paper revisits the rock-physics effects that may play an important role in the quantitative interpretation of seismic data. First, we briefly describe a standard approach to the rock-physics modeling of CO2 injections: Gassmann-type fluid substitution accounts for the presence of compressible CO2 in the pore space, and dissolution/precipitation of the minerals changes the pore volume. For many geologic conditions and injection scenarios, this approach is inadequate. For example, dissolution of the carbonate cement may weaken the rock frame, wave-induced fluid flow between CO2 patches can vary the magnitude of the seismic response significantly for the same saturation, the fluid itself might undergo change, and the seal might act as a sink for CO2. Hence, we critically review the effects of some recent advances in understanding CO2 behavior in the subsurface and associated rock-physics effects. Such a review should help researchers and practitioners navigate through the abundance of published work and design a rock-physics modeling workflow for their particular projects.

Abstract: This study evaluates the dependence of simulated surface air temperatures on model resolution and orography for the mid-Holocene. Sensitivity experiments with the atmospheric general circulation model ECHAM5 are performed with low (∼3.75°, 19 vertical levels) and high (∼1.1°, 31 vertical levels) resolution. Results are compared to the respective preindustrial runs. It is found that the large-scale temperature anomalies for the mid-Holocene (compared to preindustrial) are significantly different in the low- and high-resolution versions. For boreal winter, differences are mainly related to circulation changes caused by the response to thermal forcing in conjunction with orographic resolution. For summer, shortwave cloud radiative forcing emerges as an important factor. The anomaly differences (low minus high resolution version) in the Northern Hemisphere are regionally as large as the anomalous mid-Holocene temperature signals. Furthermore, they depend on the applied surface boundary conditions. We conclude that the resolution matters for the Northern Hemisphere response in mid-Holocene simulations, which should be taken into account in model-model and data-model comparisons.

    Description: Recently, the aeromagnetic survey with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for mineral exploration has become ubiquitous. They can fly at a lower speed, lower altitude, need fewer crew members, and are cost-effective compared to traditional manned aeromagnetic. With the development of drones, magnetometers were also developed, which reduced the cost, weight, size, and energy consumption of these sensors. One of these sensors is the magneto-inductive magnetometer. This study investigates the integration of the UAV with a magneto-inductive sensor. We have performed an aeromagnetic survey along with six profiles and compared them with the terrestrial magnetic survey using a proton precision magnetometer. We show that the magneto-inductive sensor can sense Earth’s magnetic field’s change up to less than 60 nT. These results show the promising potential of using the UAV equipped with the magneto-inductive sensor to prospect the magnetic ore deposits.

Landslides are recognized as dominant geomorphic events of morphological evolution in most mountainous and hilly landscapes. However, the lack of multitemporal high-resolution topographic data has resulted in a lack of quantitative estimates of topographic changes influenced by successive landslides. Taking a typical hillslope with successive loess landslides in the Heifangtai loess tableland, China, as an example, we conducted four unmanned aerial system (UAS) surveys and created corresponding high-resolution digital elevation models (HRDEMs) and orthophotos. We found that multitemporal UAS surveys have become a powerful new approach for addressing local topographic changes and evolution over a relatively long time series. Moreover, landslides can leave persistent geomorphic imprints on hillslope topography. The frequency distributions of topographic indexes are significantly influenced by successive landslides. The mean slope gradient, roughness and local relief decreased with successive landslide occurrences, whereas the mean topographic wetness index (TWI) increased. However, the mean slope aspect was almost unchanged by successive landslides. Furthermore, analysis of the coefficient of variation demonstrates that the frequency distribution of the slope gradient becomes more dispersed with landslide occurrences, while the slope aspect and TWI become more concentrated. The slope gradient changes with elevation. More broadly, this study provides new insights into the prediction of the local topographic feature changes and morphology evolution trends caused by successive landslides.

The shale softening behavior caused by hydrofracturing fluid is of great influence for the fracture conductivity and ultimate recovery of oil and gas from reservoir formations. This paper presents an experimental study on the characterization of a shale after being softened by the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) treatments that simulate the high-temperature and high-pressure rock-fluid interactions occurring in deep reservoirs during and after hydraulic fracturing. Microindentation tests were conducted to characterize the degradation degree and rate of mechanical properties of THMC-treated samples, and X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) were carried out to analyze compositional and microstructural alterations of samples prior to and after THMC treatment. The results show that Young's modulus, hardness, and fracture toughness degrade significantly upon THMC treatment, and the average softening rate was estimated as 0.13 mm/day. The degradation of mechanical properties of the softened zones is primarily owing to the porous microstructure and crack propagation, resulting from the dissolution of carbonates, pyrite oxidation and the clay mineral osmotic swelling. These findings can provide a good insight of shale-fracturing fluid interactions, phenomenological behavior of shale softening that take place in deep reservoirs at elevated temperatures and pressures, and shed lights on the design, and operation of shale gas exploration.

    Description: The recent and growing development and availability of unmanned aerial vehicles/systems (UAV, UAS, or “drones”) in volcanology has promoted a significant advance in volcanic surveillance of active volcanoes and in the characterization of volcanic landforms and hazards. However, in the tropics with heavy rainfall, deep volcanic soils and high relief, UAV surveying for volcanic geomorphology and volcanic hazards seems to be a relatively unexplored technique. Our aim is to present and promote innovative low-cost (〈$3000) UAV applications in volcanology to reduce costs and improve high-resolution quality (up to 8 cm/pixel) data acquisition in highly dynamic landscapes. Our results contribute to the state of the art of UAV applications in volcanic landforms in tropical developing countries where nearly half of the globally active volcanoes are located. Our findings prove that UAV's are a low-cost technique that can map large extensions of geomorphological features with accessibility limitations due to geological hazards and/or private property restrictions in short time. We surveyed four active volcanic sites in Costa Rica, Central America to illustrate potential applications of UAV mapping and geomorphological analysis of lava flows, debris avalanches, lahar deposits (debris flows) and biogeomorphic landscape changes due to forest succession. Analysis derived from the digital imagery captured by the UAV allowed to determine accurate volume calculations, surface roughness characteristics, morphometric quantifications, supervised surface classifications, and in combination with hydraulic modelling to assess hazards in urban planning. We discuss the utility, limitations, and future directions of low-cost UAV surveying in the geomorphological and geological analysis of tropical volcanic landforms and processes.

    Description: Mount Agung (the highest volcano in Bali, Indonesia) began to erupt on November 21, 2017, after having been dormant for 53 years. More than 100,000 people were evacuated within the hazard zone between September 2017 (when the highest volcanic alert was issued) and early 2018. The eruptions continued until June 2019, accompanied by at least 110 explosions. During the eruptive crisis, the observation of the lava dome's emplacement was essential for mitigating the potential hazard. Details of the lava dome growth, including the volumetric changes and effusion rates, provide valuable information about potential eruption scenarios and lahar depositions. In this paper, the essential role of multi-temporal unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images in the monitoring of Mt. Agung's lava dome, and in determining the areas of potential lahar hazards during the crisis between 2017 and 2019 is described. A fixed-wing UAV was launched outside the hazard zone to photograph the lava dome on five occasions. Image enhancement, machine learning, and photogrammetry were combined to improve image quality, remove point clouds outliers, and generate digital terrain models (DTMs) and orthoimages. The analysis of the obtained DTMs and orthoimages resulted in qualitative and quantitative data highlighting the changes inside the crater and on the surrounding slopes. These results reveal that, from November 25 to December 16, 2017, the lava dome grew vertically by 126 m and reached a volume of 26.86 ± 0.64 × 106 m3. In addition, its surface experienced a maximal uplift of approximately 52 m until July 2019 with the emergence of a new dome with a volume estimated at 9.52 ± 0.086 × 106 m3. The difference between the DTMs of 2017 and 2019 reveals the total volume of erupted material (886,100 ± 8000 m3) that was deposited on the surrounding slopes. According to the lahar inundation simulation, the deposited material may cause dangerous lahars in 21 drainages, which extend in the north (N), north-east (N-E), south (S), south-east (S-E), and south-west (S-W) sectors of the volcano. This paper presents the use of UAV remote sensing for the production of high-spatial resolution DTMs, which can be used to both observe the emplacement of a lava dome, and to identify areas with potential lahar risk during a volcano crisis.

Identification, classification, and interpretation of these deposits are crucial to the understanding of volcanic processes and assessing hazards. However, deposits often cover large areas and can be difficult or dangerous to access, making field mapping hazardous and time-consuming. Remote sensing techniques are often used to map and identify the deposits of volcanic eruptions, though these techniques present their own trade-offs in terms of image resolution, wavelength, and observation frequency. Here, we present a new approach for mapping and classifying volcanic deposits using a multi-sensor unoccupied aerial system (UAS) and demonstrate its application on lava and tephra deposits associated with the 2018 eruption of Sierra Negra volcano (Galápagos Archipelago, Ecuador). We surveyed the study area and collected visible and thermal infrared (TIR) images. We used structure-from-motion photogrammetry to create a digital elevation model (DEM) from the visual images and calculated the solar heating rate of the surface from temperature maps based on the TIR images. We find that the solar heating rate is highest for tephra deposits and lowest for ʻaʻā lava, with pāhoehoe lava having intermediate values. This is consistent with the solar heating rate correlating to the density and particle size of the surface. The solar heating rate for the lava flow also decreases with increasing distance from the vent, consistent with an increase in density as the lava degasses. We combined the surface roughness (calculated from the DEM) and the solar heating rate of the surface to remotely classify tephra deposits and different lava morphologies. We applied both supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms. A supervised classification method can replicate the manual classification while the unsupervised method can identify major surface units with no ground truth information. These methods allow for remote mapping and classification at high spatial resolution (〈 1 m) of a variety of volcanic deposits, with potential for application to deposits from other processes (e.g., fluvial, glacial) and deposits on other planetary bodies.

Abstract: The increasing use of wind and solar power requires interventions to balance the associated variability in energy production. One option to reduce the costly interventions is to exploit the natural de-correlation of wind and irradiance. This study characterises the balancing potential of the natual variability in wind and photovoltaic energy production within and across eleven European countries. We use 20 years of highly resolved meteorological data from a post-processed regional reanalysis with a 6 km horizontal grid to calculate daily photovoltaic and wind power. Our results suggest a country-dependent reduction of the day-to-day variability in energy production by 29%–42% due to installing both PV and wind power capacities, compared to wind power only. The optimized photovoltaic to photovoltaic plus wind power generation ratios are 45–57% for maximizing balancing effects associated with the changing weather. We further identify on less than 10% of the days a simultaneous occurrence of extremes in photovoltaic and wind power across European countries. The cross-border balancing potentials for the extremes in renewable energy production are therefore high due to the spatio-temporal differences of the local weather.

    Description: An extensive, reprocessed two‐dimensional (2D) seismic data set was utilized together with available well data to study the Tiddlybanken Basin in the southeastern Norwegian Barents Sea, which is revealed to be an excellent example of base salt rift structures, evaporite accumulations and evolution of salt structures. Late Devonian–early Carboniferous NE‐SW regional extensional stress affected the study area and gave rise to three half‐grabens that are separated by a NW‐SE to NNW‐SSE trending horst and an affiliated interference transfer zone. The arcuate nature of the horst is believed to be the effect of pre‐existing Timanian basement grain, whereas the interference zone formed due to the combined effect of a Timanian (basement) lineament and the geometrical arrangement of the opposing master faults. The interference transfer zone acted as a physical barrier, controlling the facies distribution and sedimentary thickness of three‐layered evaporitic sequences (LES). During the late Triassic, the northwestern part of a salt wall was developed due to passive diapirism and its evolution was influenced by halite lithology between the three‐LES. The central and southeastern parts of the salt wall did not progress beyond the pedestal stage due to lack of halite in the deepest evaporitic sequence. During the Triassic–Jurassic transition, far‐field stresses from the Novaya Zemlya fold‐and‐thrust belt reactivated the pre‐salt Carboniferous rift structures. The reactivation led to the development of the Signalhorn Dome, rejuvenated the northwestern part of the salt wall and affected the sedimentation rates in the southeastern broad basin. The salt wall together with the Signalhorn Dome and the Carboniferous pre‐salt structures were again reactivated during post‐Early Cretaceous, in response to regional compressional stresses. During this main tectonic inversion phase, the northwestern and southeastern parts of the salt wall were rejuvenated; however, salt reactivation was minimized towards the interference transfer zone beneath the centre of the salt wall.

    Description: Tephra deposits in Aotearoa New Zealand (ANZ) have been studied for 〉180 years. The now-global discipline of tephrochronology, which has some developmental roots in ANZ, forms the basis of a powerful chronostratigraphic correlational tool and age-equivalent dating method for geological, volcanological, palaeoenvironmental, and archaeological research in ANZ. Its utility is founded on the key principle that tephras or cryptotephras provide widespread isochrons in many different environments. In the first part of this article, we summarise the history of tephra studies in ANZ and then describe how tephras have been mapped, characterised, and correlated using field and laboratory-based methods. We document advances in geochemical fingerprinting of glass; tephra/cryptotephra detection and correlation by sediment-core scanning methods (e.g. X-radiography, CT imaging, XRF elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility); statistical correlation methods; and dating of tephras/cryptotephras. We discuss the advent of ANZ cryptotephra studies (from mid-1970s) and their more-recent growth. The second part comprises examples of applications of tephrochronology in ANZ: climate-event stratigraphy (NZ-INTIMATE project); eruptive-event stratigraphy in the Auckland Volcanic Field; developments in the marine tephra record; advances in identifying, correlating, and dating old (pre-50 ka) tephras and weathered-tephra deposits; forming soils/paleosols on tephras; tephras and archaeology; Kopouatai bog tephrostratigraphy and palaeoenvironments; and volcanic-hazard assessments.

A constitutive law of shear zones in the brittle-plastic transition (BPT) is of great importance to understanding loading at the bottom of the seismogenic layer preceding large earthquakes. Previous microphysics-based models are based on the partitioning of slip and dilation normal to the shear zone into different deformation mechanisms. Here, I account for the remaining 2-D strain component, inelastic extension of the shear zone, and associated stress buildup parallel to the shear zone, and investigate the steady-state behavior of a shear zone in which slip on inclined planes and bulk plastic flow coexist. Kinematic constraints and constitutive laws of the two mechanisms were solved numerically. The results show that the inclination of slip planes causes weakening relative to the friction law. Whereas the previous two-mechanism model yields a larger strength than the friction law for a rate-weakening slip element in the BPT, the present model qualitatively resolves this problem. Fault-parallel compression buildup can exceed the normal stress in the BPT and the brittle regime if the friction coefficient of the slip planes is in the range of Byerlee's law. This study illuminates the importance of fault-parallel compression in understanding the fabrics and strengths of shear zones.

    Description: Degassing volcanic systems, expressed by fumaroles, thermal anomalies, and hydrothermal alteration and deposition at the surface provide insights into the underlying structural architecture and the magmatic system. While the fumarole sites are easily identified and investigated, areas of diffuse degassing and associated hydrothermal alteration are barely explored. Here we investigate high-resolution optical and thermal infrared (TIR) data, acquired by unoccupied aircraft systems (UAS) at the La Fossa cone (Vulcano Island) in November 2018. The data provides insights into the structural complexity of degassing sites and associated processes at the surface. Applying the Structure from Motion (SfM) approach, we generate a photomosaic database with a 0.05 m and 0.7 m pixel resolution for the optical and infrared datasets, respectively. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to the optical data to detect, define and extract areas of hydrothermal alteration and sulfuric deposition on a pixel base, with a feature detection threshold of up to 25 cm2. By comparing optical data, PCA results and the IR data, we found a broad alteration zone dominated by diffuse degassing surrounding the main fumaroles, which with ~ 60,000 m2 is ten times larger than the area covered by fumaroles and yellowish sulfuric deposits. Spectral and thermal characteristics of this alteration zone suggest a segmentation into at least 13 distinct subregions. Hydrothermal alteration and deposition were analyzed considering their pixel density and spectral signature (RGB) and show the highest pixel density in the center of the fumarole field, accompanied by a systematic color shift. The same region is characterized by a systematic change in azimuths of thermal lineaments and sulfuric clusters from the dominating trend NW-SE by ~90 degrees to NE-SW. We conjecture this to be controlled by a permeability contrast due to a subsurface structure or crater intersection, facilitating a more direct gas ascent in the center of the fumarole field. We provide a precise and complete database for the state and extent of the La Fossa fumarole field, which can be used for comparative monitoring of spatio-temporal changes within the hydrothermal system at the surface.

    Description: We report a novel hybrid, molecular and elemental mass spectrometry (MS) setup for the absolute quantification of snake venom proteomes shown here for two desert black cobra species within the genus Walterinnesia, Walterinnesia aegyptia and Walterinnesia morgani. The experimental design includes the decomplexation of the venom samples by reverse-phase chromatography independently coupled to four mass spectrometry systems: the combined bottom-up and top-down molecular MS for protein identification and a parallel reverse-phase microbore high-performance liquid chromatograph (RP-μHPLC) on-line to inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS/MS) elemental mass spectrometry and electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-QToF MS). This allows to continuously record the absolute sulfur concentration throughout the chromatogram and assign it to the parent venom proteins separated in the RP-μHPLC-ESI-QToF parallel run via mass profiling. The results provide a locus-resolved and quantitative insight into the three desert black cobra venom proteome samples. They also validate the units of measure of our snake venomics strategy for the relative quantification of snake venom proteomes as % of total venom peptide bonds as a proxy for the % by weight of the venom toxins/toxin families. In a more general context, our work may pave the way for broader applications of hybrid elemental/molecular MS setups in diverse areas of proteomics.

Plastic pollution is prevalent worldwide and has been highlighted as an issue of global concern due to its harmful impacts on wildlife. The extent and mechanism by which plastic pollution effects organisms is poorly understood, especially for microplastics. One proposed mechanism by which plastics may exert a harmful effect is through the leaching of additives. To determine the risk to wildlife, the chemical identity and exposure to additives must be established. However, there are few reports with disparate experimental approaches. In contrast, a breadth of knowledge on additive release from plastics is held within the food, pharmaceutical and medical, construction, and waste management industries. This includes standardised methods to perform migration, extraction, and leaching studies. This review provides an overview of the approaches and methods used to characterise additives and their leaching behaviour from plastic pollution. The limitations of these methods are highlighted and compared with industry standardised approaches. Furthermore, an overview of the analytical strategies for the identification and quantification of additives is presented. This work provides a basis for refining current leaching approaches and analytical methods with a view towards understanding the risk of plastic pollution.

The experimental results were compared with GERG-2008 equation of state, obtaining average absolute deviations by 0.24% in pressure for phase equilibria data and 0.025% for speed of sound data. Speed of sound values were used to derive perfect-gas heat capacities, acoustic virial coefficients, and second density virial coefficients. In addition, AGA8-DC92 equation of state performance was checked for the results derived from speeds of sound.

    Description: The Net-Zero-2050 cluster aims for a national roadmap for net zero CO2 emissions by 2050, including integrated scenario analyses and negative emission technology assessment (see fact sheet Net-Zero-2050 Structure Project 1). This national target to substantially reduce national CO2 emissions by 2050 stems from the objective to comply with the global long-term temperature goal of well below 2°C of the Paris Agreement (UNFCCC, 2015). Within the cluster it is therefore important to decide on an approach for deriving a national remaining carbon budget from global emissions trajectories in agreement with the Paris Climate Agreement’s longterm temperature goal (UNFCCC, 2015). Allocating national carbon budgets is a balance of environmental effectiveness, equity, national capacity and ability, political feasibility, economic efficiency and technical requirements (Gignac and Matthews, 2015; Höhne et al., 2003; 2014). Given Germany’s capacity and abilities, we decided to follow a sustainable growth trajectory with a convergence phase to equal-per-capita CO2 emissions by 2035, and a net zero CO2 emissions trajectory after 2050 until the end of the century. This approach leads to a remaining Germany CO2 budget of 9 GtCO2 (from 1st January 2018 to 2050 and 2100), which we propose to be used across the Net-Zero-2050 cluster. The remaining carbon budget will serve as a target to be used in all work packages in a concerted way, either qualitatively or quantitatively, and in accordance with other work packages (see also fact sheet Net-Zero-2050 Energy Scenario Approach). The calculated budget is at the lower end of the national budget if allocated by the grandfathering approach (emissions are allocated with respect to today’s emissions shares: 5.5-13.1 GtCO2), but slightly higher than the highest estimate of an equal-per-capita remaining carbon budget (emissions are allocated with respect to Germany’s share of the global population: 3.5-8.4 GtCO2) The 9 GtCO2 national remaining CO2 budget, 6.9 GtCO2 from 1st January 2021, will need to be broken down by category (e.g. energy, land use, industrial processes, and man-made sinks and sources; see Gap Analysis Report) in order to provide a consistent approach across work packages.

    Description: South Wales is characterised by a rich variety of geologic formations and rocks of different ages and periods, and a large asymmetric syncline, as perhaps its most significant structural geological feature, extending from east to west over a length of approximately 96 km and 30 km from north to south, respectively. This oval-shaped syncline is part of the Variscan orogenic thrust and fold belt in Central Europe and covers some 2,700 km2, with coal-bearing rocks from the Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian Stage) deposited in the central syncline and older rocks outcropping in a peripheral belt around it. The coal-bearing sequence begins with Namurian grits and shales, overlain by the more productive Lower, Middle and Upper Coal Measures. A 3D structural geological model has been implemented for the central part of the South Wales Syncline and its bedrock geology. The oldest rocks in the model domain date back to the Pridoli Series from the uppermost Silurian, the youngest to the Westphalian Stage of the Upper Carboniferous. For model implementation, mainly open access data from the British Geological Survey (BGS) has been used. The final 3D structural geological model covers the entire Central South Wales Syncline and is 32.8 km wide and 36.6 km long. In total, the 3D model includes 21 fault zones and the elevation depth of ten surfaces: (1) Top Upper Coal Measures Formation; (2) Top Middle Coal Measures Formation; (3) Top Lower Coal Measures Formation; (4) Top Millstone Grit Group; (5) Top Dinantian Rocks; (6) Top Upper Devonian Rocks; (7) Top Lower Devonian Rocks (sandstone dominated); (8) Top Lower Devonian Rocks (mudstone dominated); (9) Top Pridoli Rocks; (10) Top Ludlow Rocks (in parts).

    Description: This data publication contains vertical seismic profiling (VSP) data collected at the Groß Schönebeck site, Germany, from February 15-18, 2017. Energy excitation was performed with vibroseis sources. Data was acquired in the two 4.3 km deep wells E GrSk 3/90 and Gt GrSk4/05 using hybrid wireline fiber-optic sensor cables and distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology. The survey design and data acquisition, the overall characteristics of the acquired data, as well as the data processing and evaluation for a zero-offset source position are described in the paper of Henninges et al. (2021) published in Solid Earth. The data for several source positions presented in this paper is contained here, mostly in the form of full waveform data stored in seg-y format. A detailed description of the individual data sets is given in the attached data description document.

    Description: The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) is a non-profit scientific organization aiming at establishing and operating a rapid earthquake detection system globally and in particular in the European and Mediterranean regions as well as facilitating exchange between seismological institutes. The EMSC has been a pioneer in citizen seismology by collecting in-situ information on the earthquake impact directly from the witnesses. The EMSC has been collecting citizen intensity felt reports at a global scale for many years via two channels: its websites and its “LastQuake” smartphone application. These felt reports are collected through a set of 12 cartoons representing the 12 levels of the European Macroseismic Scale (Grünthal, 1998). They provide rapid information on how the earthquake’s impact is felt by the local population. The EMSC felt reports were shown to be consistent with the USGS Did You Feel It? (Wald et al., 2011) responses and with manually derived macroseismic datasets (Bossu et al., 2017). Such felt reports are provided for a set of 36 earthquakes, each tagged with a unique ID number. They are only considered for intensity values of up to 10, since higher values are unrealistic. Additionally, an interactive map of the aftershocks distribution is provided for each earthquake. These aftershocks are selected from the EMSC catalogue in the 14 days after the event and within 500km of the epicentre location. On each map, the beachball representing the two nodal planes as given by the Global Centroid Moment Tensor catalogue (Dziewonski et al., 1981; Ekstrom et al., 2012) is displayed at the epicentre location. For each event (identified by unique id number), the first line indicates catalogue information on the earthquake (event_id, region, origin_time (UTC), latitude, longitude, depth, magnitude, strike angle from GCMT) Each following line is a felt report gathered by the EMSC including, the longitude, latitude, reported intensity and report time.

    Description: Most air quality stations in Spain exceeded the European Union's daily PM10 limit due to the February 2016 Saharan dust outbreak, which resulted from two successive dust storms in Northwest Africa. This study identifies the meso-β/meso-γ-scale dynamical processes responsible for developing these dust storms using observations and high-resolution Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry simulations. The results revealed that the first dust storm was associated with a strong barrier jet (BJ). The BJ formed on the southeastern foothills of the Saharan Atlas Mountains (SAM) when an easterly-northeasterly low-level Mediterranean flow was blocked by a stably stratified layer close to the SAM. The BJ intensified just after sunrise on 20 February and the associated near-surface peak winds organized the first dust storm. The second dust storm was linked to a mesoscale gravity wave (MGW) and hydraulic jumps. A long-lived westward propagating MGW was triggered by a downslope flow interacting with the stable layer near the northeastern edge of the Tinrhert Plateau in eastern Algeria. When this MGW crossed the Tademaït Plateau, hydraulic jumps formed on its lee side. The strong winds accompanying these hydraulic jumps formed the second dust storm on 21 February. The lifted dust extended over a depth of 2–3 km in the growing daytime boundary layer and was advected poleward by the southerly/southeasterly mid-tropospheric winds. Our results underline the importance of resolving terrain-induced mesoscale processes to understand dust storm dynamics, which are difficult to represent in coarse-resolution numerical models.

    Description: There is a significant interest in the usage of algae in everyday diet because of their positive influence on the gastrointestinal system due to the presence of high amounts of dietary fibres, while the presence of ω-3 fatty acids contributes to the protection of cardiovascular system. Algal derived polysaccharides are found in the food products as stabilisers, thickening agents and emulsifiers. In the cosmetic industry, algae are used in sunscreen, anti-age, anti-cellulite, moisturising and skin whitening products. These products can be used for the development of cosmeceuticals which contain algal derived bioactive compounds and they can exert a pharmaceutical therapeutic benefit. However, these compounds also have potential for being isolated and used for development of novel drugs against diseases, such as cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and diabetes. Present review provides information about algal compounds incorporated into various food, cosmetic or medicinal products, as well as their potential for health improvement was evaluated.

    Description: We used transition path theory (TPT) to infer “reactive” pathways of floating marine debris trajectories. The TPT analysis was applied on a pollution-aware time-homogeneous Markov chain model constructed from trajectories produced by satellite-tracked undrogued buoys from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Global Drifter Program. The latter involved coping with the openness of the system in physical space, which further required an adaptation of the standard TPT setting. Directly connecting pollution sources along coastlines with garbage patches of varied strengths, the unveiled reactive pollution routes represent alternative targets for ocean cleanup efforts. Among our specific findings we highlight: constraining a highly probable pollution source for the Great Pacific garbage patch; characterizing the weakness of the Indian Ocean gyre as a trap for plastic waste; and unveiling a tendency of the subtropical gyres to export garbage toward the coastlines rather than to other gyres in the event of anomalously intense winds. Given a Markov chain, namely, a model describing the stochastic state transitions in which the transition probability of each state depends only on the state attained in the previous event, transition path theory (TPT) provides a rigorous approach to study the statistics of transitions from a set of states to another, possibly disconnected set of states. Envisioning the motion of floating debris as described by a Markov chain that accounts for the ability of coastal states to “pollute the oceans,” TPT is employed to unveil “reactive” pathways representing direct transitions from potential release locations along the shorelines to accumulation sites across the world ocean. These include the subtropical gyres, whose strength in this context is investigated

    Description: Complex network theory provides an important tool for the analysis of complex systems such as the Earth’s climate. In this context, functional climate networks can be constructed using a spatiotemporal climate dataset and a suitable time series distance function. The resulting coarse-grained view on climate variability consists of representing distinct areas on the globe (i.e., grid cells) by nodes and connecting pairs of nodes that present similar time series. One fundamental concern when constructing such a functional climate network is the definition of a metric that captures the mutual similarity between time series. Here we study systematically the effect of 29 time series distance functions on functional climate network construction based on global temperature data. We observe that the distance functions previously used in the literature commonly generate very similar networks while alternative ones result in rather distinct network structures and reveal different long-distance connection patterns. These patterns are highly important for the study of climate dynamics since they generally represent pathways for the long-distance transportation of energy and can be used to forecast climate variability on subseasonal to interannual or even decadal scales. Therefore, we propose the measures studied here as alternatives for the analysis of climate variability and to further exploit their complementary capability of capturing different aspects of the underlying dynamics that may help gaining a more holistic empirical understanding of the global climate system.

    Description: Deep-time paleoclimatic records document large-scale shifts and perturbations in Earth's climate; during the Cenozoic in particular transitions have been recorded on time scales of 10 thousand to 1 million years. Bifurcations in the leading dynamical modes could be a key element driving these events. Such bifurcation-induced critical transitions are typically preceded by characteristic early-warning signals, for example in terms of rising standard deviation and lag-one autocorrelation. These early-warning signals are generated by a widening of the underlying basin of attraction when approaching the bifurcation, a phenomenon dubbed critical slowing down. The associated dynamical transitions should therefore be preceded by characteristic signals that can be detected by statistical methods. Here, we reveal the presence of significant early-warning signals prior to several climate events within a paleoclimate record spanning the last 66 million years - the Cenozoic Era. We computed standard deviation and lag-one autocorrelation of the CENOzoic Global Reference benthic foraminifer carbon and oxygen Isotope Dataset (CENOGRID), comprising two time series of deep sea carbonate isotope variations of 18O and 13C. We find significant early-warning signals for five out of nine previously identified Cenozoic paleoclimatic events in at least one of the two records, which can be considered as viable candidates for bifurcation-induced transitions to be analysed in follow-up studies. Our results suggest that some of the major climate events of the last 66 Ma were triggered by bifurcations in leading modes of variability, indicating bifurcations could be a key component of Earth's climate system deep-time evolution.

    Description: Complex network approaches have been recently emerging as novel and complementary concepts of nonlinear time series analysis that are able to unveil many features that are hidden to more traditional analysis methods. In this work, we focus on one particular approach: the application of ordinal pattern transition networks for characterizing time series data. More specifically, we generalize a traditional statistical complexity measure (SCM) based on permutation entropy by explicitly disclosing heterogeneous frequencies of ordinal pattern transitions. To demonstrate the usefulness of these generalized SCMs, we employ them to characterize different dynamical transitions in the logistic map as a paradigmatic model system, as well as real-world time series of fluid experiments and electrocardiogram recordings. The obtained results for both artificial and experimental data demonstrate that the consideration of transition frequencies between different ordinal patterns leads to dynamically meaningful estimates of SCMs, which provide prospective tools for the analysis of observational time series. In the past decade, the field of nonlinear time series analysis has been undergoing fast developments benefiting from concepts from complex network theory. Along this line of research, ordinal pattern transition networks have been expanding the established concept of ordinal time series analysis and provide new insights into the dynamical organization underlying time series data that complement existing methods like permutation entropy. Permutation based on ordinal patterns is a simple and easy to implement concept that naturally provides statistical complexity measures (SCMs), which in the case of permutation entropy relies on pattern frequencies only. Yet, much additional information can be exploited by including ordinal pattern transition frequencies into the definitions of SCMs—an idea that, however, has not been widely developed and applied so far. In this work, we generalize existing permutation based SCMs by means of ordinal pattern transition networks that take into account the pattern transition properties explicitly. The usefulness of our generalizations is demonstrated by using time series of both model and experimental data

    Description: Little is known about the distribution of ice in the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Whereas marine and terrestrial geological data indicate that the grounded ice advanced to a position close to the continental-shelf break, the total ice volume is unclear. Glacial boundary conditions are potentially important sources of uncertainty, in particular basal friction and climatic boundary conditions. Basal friction exerts a strong control on the large-scale dynamics of the ice sheet and thus affects its size and is not well constrained. Glacial climatic boundary conditions determine the net accumulation and ice temperature and are also poorly known. Here we explore the effect of the uncertainty in both features on the total simulated ice storage of the AIS at the LGM. For this purpose we use a hybrid ice sheet shelf model that is forced with different basal drag choices and glacial background climatic conditions obtained from the LGM ensemble climate simulations of the third phase of the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP3). Overall, we find that the spread in the simulated ice volume for the tested basal drag parameterizations is about the same range as for the different general circulation model (GCM) forcings (4 to 6 m sea level equivalent). For a wide range of plausible basal friction configurations, the simulated ice dynamics vary widely but all simulations produce fully extended ice sheets towards the continental-shelf break. More dynamically active ice sheets correspond to lower ice volumes, while they remain consistent with the available constraints on ice extent. Thus, this work points to the possibility of an AIS with very active ice streams during the LGM. In addition, we find that the surface boundary temperature field plays a crucial role in determining the ice extent through its effect on viscosity. For ice sheets of a similar extent and comparable dynamics, we find that the precipitation field determines the total AIS volume. However, precipitation is highly uncertain. Climatic fields simulated by climate models show more precipitation in coastal regions than a spatially uniform anomaly, which can lead to larger ice volumes. Our results strongly support using these paleoclimatic fields to simulate and study the LGM and potentially other time periods like the last interglacial. However, their accuracy must be assessed as well, as differences between climate model forcing lead to a large spread in the simulated ice volume and extension.

    Description: A prominent feature of earthquakes is their empirical laws, including memory (clustering) in time and space. Several earthquake forecasting models, such as the epidemic-type aftershock sequence (ETAS) model, were developed based on these empirical laws. Yet, a recent study [1] showed that the ETAS model fails to reproduce the significant long-term memory characteristics found in real earthquake catalogs. Here we modify and generalize the ETAS model to include short- and long-term triggering mechanisms, to account for the short- and long-time memory (exponents) discovered in the data. Our generalized ETAS model accurately reproduces the short- and long-term/distance memory observed in the Italian and Southern Californian earthquake catalogs. The revised ETAS model is also found to improve earthquake forecasting after large shocks.

    Description: Coupling between networks is widely prevalent in real systems and has dramatic effects on their resilience and functional properties. However, current theoretical models tend to assume homogeneous coupling where all the various subcomponents interact with one another, whereas real-world systems tend to have various different coupling patterns. We develop two frameworks to explore the resilience of such modular networks, including specific deterministic coupling patterns and coupling patterns where specific subnetworks are connected randomly. We find both analytically and numerically that the location of the percolation phase transition varies nonmonotonically with the fraction of interconnected nodes when the total number of interconnecting links remains fixed. Furthermore, there exists an optimal fraction r∗ of interconnected nodes where the system becomes optimally resilient and is able to withstand more damage. Our results suggest that, although the exact location of the optimal r∗ varies based on the coupling patterns, for all coupling patterns, there exists such an optimal point. Our findings provide a deeper understanding of network resilience and show how networks can be optimized based on their specific coupling patterns.

    Description: Rapid and continuous analysis of radiocarbon (14C) concentration in carbonate samples at spatial resolution down to 100 µm has been made possible with the new LA-AMS (laser ablation accelerator mass spectrometry) technique. This novel approach can provide radiocarbon data at a spatial resolution similar to that of stable carbon (C) isotope measurements by isotope ratio mass spectrometry of micromilled samples and, thus, can help to interpret δ13C signatures, which otherwise are difficult to understand due to numerous processes contributing to changes in the C-isotope ratio. In this work, we analyzed δ13C and 14C on the Holocene stalagmite SPA 127 from the high-alpine Spannagel Cave (Austria). Both proxies respond in a complex manner to climate variability. Combined stable carbon and radiocarbon profiles allow three growth periods characterized by different δ13C signatures to be identified: (i) the period 8.5 to 8.0 ka is characterized by relatively low δ13C values with small variability combined with a comparably high radiocarbon reservoir effect (expressed as dead carbon fraction, dcf) of around 60 %. This points towards C contributions of host rock dissolution and/or from an “old” organic matter (OM) reservoir in the karst potentially mobilized due to the warm climatic conditions of the early Holocene. (ii) Between 8 and 3.8 ka there was a strong variability in δ13C with values ranging from −8 ‰ to +1 ‰ and a generally lower dcf. The δ13C variability is most likely caused by changes in C exchange between cave air CO2 and dissolved inorganic carbon in drip water in the cave, which are induced by reduced drip rates as derived from reduced stalagmite growth rates. Additionally, the lower dcf indicates that the OM reservoir contributed less to stalagmite growth in this period possibly as a result of reduced meteoric precipitation or because it was exhausted. (iii) In the youngest section between 3.8 and 2.4 ka, comparably stable and low δ13C values, combined with an increasing dcf reaching up to 50 % again, hint towards a contribution of an aged OM reservoir in the karst.     Description: In the past few decades, boreal summers have been characterized by an increasing number of extreme weather events in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics, including persistent heat waves, droughts and heavy rainfall events with significant social, economic, and environmental impacts. Many of these events have been associated with the presence of anomalous large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns, in particular, persistent blocking situations, i.e., nearly stationary spatial patterns of air pressure. To contribute to a better understanding of the emergence and dynamical properties of such situations, we construct complex networks representing the atmospheric circulation based on Lagrangian trajectory data of passive tracers advected within the atmospheric flow. For these Lagrangian flow networks, we study the spatial patterns of selected node properties prior to, during, and after different atmospheric blocking events in Northern Hemisphere summer. We highlight the specific network characteristics associated with the sequence of strong blocking episodes over Europe during summer 2010 as an illustrative example. Our results demonstrate the ability of the node degree, entropy, and harmonic closeness centrality based on outgoing links to trace important spatiotemporal characteristics of atmospheric blocking events. In particular, all three measures capture the effective separation of the stationary pressure cell forming the blocking high from the normal westerly flow and the deviation of the main atmospheric currents around it. Our results suggest the utility of further exploiting the Lagrangian flow network approach to atmospheric circulation in future targeted diagnostic and prognostic studies. As the frequency and severity of mid-latitude extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts, and heavy rainfall events are projected to further increase with ongoing climate change, developing reliable forecasts of such events is becoming a gradually more pressing issue. However, while the quality of predictions has been improving considerably on short-term (up to 2 weeks lead time) and seasonal time scales (beyond 3 months), sub-seasonal forecasting (from 2 weeks to about 3 months) remains a challenging task. This results in part from a limited understanding and representation of phenomena that could potentially increase the predictability at these sub-seasonal scales. One type of such phenomena is atmospheric blocking events. These large-scale, nearly stationary, atmospheric pressure patterns can remain in place for several days or even weeks, disturbing the usual westerly driven circulation and the resulting succession of weather regimes over the mid-latitudes. Despite numerous studies, a comprehensive theory explaining the emergence of blocking-related circulation anomalies and allowing an early forecasting of incipient blocking situations remains to be found. In this work, we utilize a network-based approach, so-called Lagrangian flow networks, for studying the atmospheric circulation associated with blocking situations during Northern hemisphere summer. We discuss the ability of different network measures to detect and track important spatial characteristics of blocking events, suggesting the potential of complex network approaches to provide key elements for future diagnostic and prognostic studies of atmospheric blocking events

    Description: The pilgrimages of Muslims to Makkah (Hajj and Umrah) is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world which draws millions of people from around 180 countries each year. Heat stress during summer has led to health impacts including morbidity and mortality in the past, which is likely to worsen due to global warming. Here we investigate the impacts of increasing heat stress during the peak summer months over Makkah at present levels of warming as well as under Paris Agreement's targets of 1.5 °C and 2 °C global mean temperature increase above pre-industrial levels. This is achieved by using multi member ensemble projections from the half a degree additional warming, prognosis and projected impacts project. We find a substantial increase in the exceedance probabilities of dangerous thresholds (wet-bulb temperature 〉24.6 °C) in 1.5 °C and 2 °C warmer worlds over the summer months. For the 3 hottest months, August, September and October, even thresholds of extremely dangerous (wet-bulb temperature 〉29.1 °C) health risks may be surpassed. An increase in exceedance probability of dangerous threshold is projected by two and three times in 1.5 °C and 2 °C warmer worlds respectively for May as compared to the reference climate. September shows the highest increase in the exceedance probability of extremely dangerous threshold which is increased to 4 and 13 times in 1.5 °C and 2 °C warmer worlds respectively. Based on the indicators of hazard, exposure and vulnerability, we carried out probabilistic risk analysis of life-threatening heat stroke over Makkah. A ten time increase in the heat stroke risk at higher wet-bulb temperatures for each month is projected in 2 °C warmer world. If warming was limited to 1.5 °C world, the risk would only increase by about five times, or half the risk of 2 °C. Our results indicate that substantial heat related risks during Hajj and Umrah happening over peak summer months, as it is the case for Hajj during this decade, will require substantial adaptation measures and would negatively affect the performance of the rite. Stringent mitigation actions to keep the global temperature to 1.5 °C can reduce the risks of heat related illnesses and thereby reduce the non-economic loss and damage related to one of the central pillars of a world religion.

    Description: Persistent hot–dry or cold–wet summer weather can have significant impacts on agriculture, health, and the environment. For northwestern Europe, these weather regimes are typically linked to, respectively, blocked or zonal jet stream states. The fundamental dynamics underlying these circulation states are still poorly understood. Edward Lorenz postulated that summer circulation may be either fully or almost intransitive, implying that part of the phase space (capturing circulation variability) cannot be reached within one specific summer. If true, this would have major implications for the predictability of summer weather and our understanding of the drivers of interannual variability of summer weather. Here, we test the two Lorenz hypotheses (i.e., fully or almost intransitive) for European summer circulation, capitalizing on a newly available very large ensemble (2000 years) of present-day climate data in the fully coupled global climate model EC-Earth. Using self-organizing maps, we quantify the phase space of summer circulation and the trajectories through phase space in unprecedented detail. We show that, based on Markov assumptions, the summer circulation is strongly dependent on its initial state in early summer with the atmospheric memory ranging from 28 days up to ~45 days. The memory is particularly long if the initial state is either a blocked or a zonal flow state. Furthermore, we identify two groups of summers that are characterized by distinctly different trajectories through phase space, and that prefer either a blocked or zonal circulation state, respectively. These results suggest that intransitivity is indeed a fundamental property of the atmosphere and an important driver of interannual variability.

    Description: Identifying causal relationships is a challenging yet crucial problem in many fields of science like epidemiology, climatology, ecology, genomics, economics and neuroscience, to mention only a few. Recent studies have demonstrated that ordinal partition transition networks (OPTNs) allow inferring the coupling direction between two dynamical systems. In this work, we generalize this concept to the study of the interactions among multiple dynamical systems and we propose a new method to detect causality in multivariate observational data. By applying this method to numerical simulations of coupled linear stochastic processes as well as two examples of interacting nonlinear dynamical systems (coupled Lorenz systems and a network of neural mass models), we demonstrate that our approach can reliably identify the direction of interactions and the associated coupling delays. Finally, we study real-world observational microelectrode array electrophysiology data from rodent brain slices to identify the causal coupling structures underlying epileptiform activity. Our results, both from simulations and real-world data, suggest that OPTNs can provide a complementary and robust approach to infer causal effect networks from multivariate observational data.

    Description: Atmosphere and ocean dynamics display many complex features and are characterized by a wide variety of processes and couplings across different timescales. Here we demonstrate the application of multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) to investigate the multivariate and multiscale properties of a reduced order model of the ocean–atmosphere coupled dynamics. MEMD provides a decomposition of the original multivariate time series into a series of oscillating patterns with time-dependent amplitude and phase by exploiting the local features of the data and without any a priori assumptions on the decomposition basis. Moreover, each oscillating pattern, usually named multivariate intrinsic mode function (MIMF), represents a local source of information that can be used to explore the behavior of fractal features at different scales by defining a sort of multiscale and multivariate generalized fractal dimensions. With these two complementary approaches, we show that the ocean–atmosphere dynamics presents a rich variety of features, with different multifractal properties for the ocean and the atmosphere at different timescales. For weak ocean–atmosphere coupling, the resulting dimensions of the two model components are very different, while for strong coupling for which coupled modes develop, the scaling properties are more similar especially at longer timescales. The latter result reflects the presence of a coherent coupled dynamics. Finally, we also compare our model results with those obtained from reanalysis data demonstrating that the latter exhibit a similar qualitative behavior in terms of multiscale dimensions and the existence of a scale dependency of the statistics of the phase-space density of points for different regions, which is related to the different drivers and processes occurring at different timescales in the coupled atmosphere–ocean system. Our approach can therefore be used to diagnose the strength of coupling in real applications.

    Description: We investigate the role of small-scale dynamics in inducing large-scale transitions in the solar wind magnetic field by means of dynamical system metrics based on instantaneous fractal dimensions. By looking at the corresponding multiscale features, we observe a break in the average attractor dimension occurring at the crossover between the inertial and the kinetic/dissipative regime. Our analysis suggests that large-scale transitions are induced by small-scale dynamics through an inverse cascade mechanism driven by local correlations, while electron contributions (if any) are hidden by instrumental noise.

    Description: The Earth’s climate is a complex system characterized by multi-scale nonlinear interrelationships between different subsystems like atmosphere and ocean. Among others, the mutual interdependence between sea surface temperatures (SST) and precipitation (PCP) has important implications for ecosystems and societies in vast parts of the globe but is still far from being completely understood. In this context, the globally most relevant coupled ocean–atmosphere phenomenon is the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which strongly affects large-scale SST variability as well as PCP patterns all around the globe. Although significant achievements have been made to foster our understanding of ENSO’s global teleconnections and climate impacts, there are many processes associated with ocean–atmosphere interactions in the tropics and extratropics, as well as remote effects of SST changes on PCP patterns that have not yet been unveiled or fully understood. In this work, we employ coupled climate network analysis for characterizing dominating global co-variability patterns between SST and PCP at monthly timescales. Our analysis uncovers characteristic seasonal patterns associated with both local and remote statistical linkages and demonstrates their dependence on the type of the current ENSO phase (El Niño, La Niña or neutral phase). Thereby, our results allow identifying local interactions as well as teleconnections between SST variations and global precipitation patterns.

    Description: Radar reflections from the interior of the Greenland ice sheet contain a comprehensive archive of past accumulation rates, ice dynamics, and basal melting. Combining these data with dynamic ice sheet models may greatly aid model calibration, improve past and future sea level estimates, and enable insights into past ice sheet dynamics that neither models nor data could achieve alone. Unfortunately, simulating the continental-scale ice sheet stratigraphy represents a major challenge for current ice sheet models. In this study, we present the first three-dimensional ice sheet model that explicitly simulates the Greenland englacial stratigraphy. Individual layers of accumulation are represented on a grid whose vertical axis is time so that they do not exchange mass with each other as the flow of ice deforms them. This isochronal advection scheme does not influence the ice dynamics and only requires modest input data from a host thermomechanical ice sheet model, making it easy to transfer to a range of models. Using an ensemble of simulations, we show that direct comparison with the dated radiostratigraphy data yields notably more accurate results than calibrating simulations based on total ice thickness. We show that the isochronal scheme produces a more reliable simulation of the englacial age profile than traditional age tracers. The interpretation of ice dynamics at different times is possible but limited by uncertainties in the upper and lower boundary conditions, namely temporal variations in surface mass balance and basal friction.

    Description: Buildings energy consumption is one of the most important contributors to GHG emissions worldwide, responsible for 23% of energy-related CO2 emissions. Decarbonising buildings energy demand will pass through two types of strategies: first through an overall reduction of energy demand, that could to some extent be reaped at negative costs; and second through a reduction of the carbon content of energy via fuel switching and supply side decarbonisation. This study assesses the contributions of each of these strategies for the decarbonisation of the buildings sector in line with a 1.5°C global warming. We show that in a 1.5°C scenario combining mitigation policies and a reduction of market failures in efficiency markets, 81% of the reductions in buildings emissions are achieved through the reduction of the carbon content of energy, while the remaining 19% are due to efficiency improvements which reduce energy demand by 31%. Without supply side decarbonisation, efficiency improvements almost entirely suppress the doubling of emissions that would otherwise be expected, but fail to induce an absolute decline in emissions. Our modelling and scenarios show the impact of both climate change mitigation policies and of the alleviation of market failures pervading through energy efficiency markets. The results show that the reduction of the carbon content of energy through fuel switching and supply-side decarbonisation is of paramount importance for the decarbonisation of buildings.

    Description: In 2015, the international community committed to limiting global warming well below 2°C. Since 2015, however, and before the coronavirus pandemic stroke, GHG emissions have continued on their growing track and the achievement of ambitious climate targets has become even more arduous. In order to rein in global warming well below 2°C, energy systems must reach net-zero emissions by mid-century. The energy supply, in particular the electricity sector, offers a great potential for reducing emissions. But in the absence of large transformations on the energy demand side, achieving the Paris Agreement’s target would necessitate an extensive recourse to debated negative emission technologies. The interest in demand-side solutions has therefore risen over the last few years. Today, buildings account for 28% of CO2 emissions in the energy system. This sector is therefore an essential building block of any successful mitigation strategy. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the contribution of buildings to limit climate change. The widespread view on the role of buildings is that there is a large and cost-effective potential for energy demand reductions, and that this potential remains unexploited due to some barriers, which policies should remove. This thesis relies on energy modeling to shed a new light on that widespread view. It uses the strengths of both an energy simulation model and of an integrated assessment model representing the energy, economy and climate systems. In order to assess the role of buildings in climate policies, the thesis addresses the following complementary questions: How will buildings energy consumption evolve in the future? What is the technological and behavioral potential for demand reductions? What are optimal climate change mitigation pathways for the buildings sector in the context of the overall energy system, and when the energy efficiency gap is taken into account? This thesis shows that the landscape of buildings energy demand will undergo major changes in the 21st century: while cooking and other heating purposes account for the bulk of the demand today; space cooling, appliances and lighting will represent the lion’s share tomorrow. Similarly, despite its current weight in demand, traditional biomass will gradually leave the stage. Against this background, radical changes in technologies and behaviors could lead to a halving of energy demand. The decarbonization of the sector however does not only pass through energy demand reductions. In the scenarios presented in this thesis, most of the decarbonization is attributed to the decline in the emissions per unit of energy consumed — a topic under-represented in the literature dealing with build- ings energy demand. In light of the thesis’ results, and supported by the literature, we challenge the widespread view on the role of buildings in climate change mitigation. Indeed, the widespread narrative focuses mostly on energy demand reductions and does not embrace the strategy consisting in decreasing the amount of emissions per unit of energy — in particular via electrification and fuel switching. This strategy accounts however for a substantial part of the sector’s decarbonization. We therefore propose an alternative narrative: Two complementary and interacting strategies can lead to a deep decarbonization of buildings energy demand: reducing energy demand and decreasing the carbon content of energy demand through energy supply decarbonization and fuel switching. Virtually all energy services in buildings could be provided by carbon-free energy carriers. How- ever market incentives as well as barriers do not allow for a widespread uptake of clean energy carriers and efficient technologies. Policies should remove barriers to the uptake of efficient and low-carbon technologies, and design markets to give the right incentives in favor of these options.

    Description: Estimates of climate change’s economic impacts vary widely, depending on the applied methodology. This uncertainty is a barrier for policymakers seeking to quantify the benefits of mitigation. In this Perspective, we provide a comprehensive overview and categorization of the pathways and methods translating biophysical impacts into economic damages. We highlight the open question of the persistence of impacts as well as key methodological gaps, in particular the effect of including inequality and adaptation in the assessments. We discuss the need for intensifying interdisciplinary research, focusing on the uncertainty of econometric estimates of damages as well as identification of the most socioeconomically relevant types of impact. A structured model intercomparison related to economic impacts is noted as a crucial next step.

    Description: Climate science provides strong evidence of the necessity of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. The IPCC 1.5°C special report (SR1.5) presents 414 emissions scenarios modelled for the report, of which around 50 are classified as '1.5°C scenarios', with no or low temperature overshoot. These emission scenarios differ in their reliance on individual mitigation levers, including reduction of global energy demand, decarbonisation of energy production, development of land-management systems, and the pace and scale of deploying carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies. The reliance of 1.5°C scenarios on these levers needs to be critically assessed in light of the potentials of the relevant technologies and roll-out plans. We use a set of five parameters to bundle and characterise the mitigation levers employed in the SR1.5 1.5°C scenarios. For each of these levers, we draw on the literature to define 'medium' and 'high' upper bounds that delineate between their 'reasonable', 'challenging' and 'speculative' use by mid century. We do not find any 1.5°C scenarios that stay within all medium upper bounds on the five mitigation levers. Scenarios most frequently 'over use' carbon dioxide removal with geological storage as a mitigation lever, whilst reductions of energy demand and carbon intensity of energy production are 'over used' less frequently. If we allow mitigation levers to be employed up to our high upper bounds, we are left with 22 of the SR1.5 1.5°C scenarios with no or low overshoot. The scenarios that fulfill these criteria are characterised by greater coverage of the available mitigation levers than those scenarios that exceed at least one of the high upper bounds. When excluding the two scenarios that exceed the SR1.5 carbon budget for limiting global warming to 1.5°C, this subset of 1.5°C scenarios shows a range of 15-22 Gt CO2 (16-22 Gt CO2 interquartile range) for emissions in 2030. For the year of reaching net zero CO2 emissions the range is 2039-2061 (2049-2057 interquartile range).

    Description: This data publication contains the compilation of global heat-flow data by the International Heat Flow Commission (IHFC; http://www.ihfc-iugg.org/) of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI). The presented data release 2021 contains data generated between 1939 and 2021 and constitutes an updated and extended version of the 2012 IHFC database release (IHFC 2012; later re-published as PANGAEA release: Global Heat Flow Compilation Group, 2013). The 2021 release contains 74,548 heat-flow data from 1,403 publications. 55% of the reported heat-flow values are from the continental domain (n ~ 40,870), while the remaining 45% are located in the oceanic domain (n ~ 33,678). The data are provided in csv and Excel formats. Compared to earlier compilations, which followed the structure defined by Jessop et al. (1976), the new data release was transformed to the recently redefined structure for reporting and storing heat-flow data in the Global Heat Flow Database (Fuchs et al., 2021). Therefore, the notation and structure of the database was adopted, transforming the database field entries defined after Jessop et al. (1976) to the new field structure. Old code notations are not continued and the dataset was cleaned for entries without reporting any heat-flow value. Although successfully transformed, this release marks an intermediate step as the majority of the newly defined database fields have not been filled yet. Filling these fields, checking the existing entries and assessing the quality of each entry are the aim of the upcoming Global Heat Flow Data Assessment Project, for which this data set provides the basis. Consequently, we kindly ask the user to take notice that the current release still suffers similar problems as previously published compilations in terms of data heterogeneity, documentation and quality.

    Description: Mapping out evoregions is a method that portrays the evolutionary diversification of a clade by revealing regions of independent diversification and radiations. Supplementary, regions of endemism, as well as evolutionary transition zones, can be discovered by investigating phylogenetic turnover. Analyzing phylogeographic patterns is of interest in conservation since here it must be dealt with the issue of finding optimal areas that effectively preserve comprehensive and representative sets of biotas. The inclusion of phylogenetic information supports conservation particularly in the long term. To lighten up about major regions of diversification and to investigate whether spatial patterns are similar among clades, we designed evoregions for six major vertebrate clades (two mammal families, two bird families, and two amphibian families) whose species are widely distributed across the Neotropical realm. Moreover, since phylogeographical patterns are of interest in biodiversity conservation, we investigated whether there are regions of endemism and evolutionary transition zones which may be significant for conservation. To comprehensively decipher the history of focal clades, three figures with phylogenetic information were inferred: (a) maps of evoregions by mapping phylogenetic turnover derived by fuzzy-weighting across grid cells. (b) maps with patterns of low, respectively, high phylogenetic turnover that reveal regions of endemism and evolutionary transition zones by calculating phylogenetic dissimilarity. (c) phylogenetic tree circles which assign species to their respective evoregions, by considering their area of most common occurrence. The latter includes an estimation of ancestral evoregions by using stochastic character mapping. In their shape, the evoregions resemble neotropical biomes among all clades, but they differ in their number, which may be attributed to the clade's ages, their unique ecologies, and histories of colonization. Regions of high endemicity are partly congruent among the clades, with clear overlaps in Amazonia. Evolutionary transition zones differ among clades, but certain trends can be recognized which provide clues about specific biogeographical features and evolutionary alterations of e.g. climate. Phylogenetic circles support the findings and deliver information on whether species diversified in situ along with their closest relatives and can therefore mostly be assigned to a single evoregion, or whether they are likely to have evolved ex situ and tend to be widespread. Analyzing evoregions, phylogeographic patterns of endemism/transition zones, supplemented with ancestral affiliations delivers particularly comprehensive information about a clade's evolution and may be a valuable supplementary tool applicable in biodiversity conservation.

    Description: This paper takes a new look on transition processes in social-ecological systems, identified based on household use of direct ecosystem services in a case study in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We build on the assumption that high dependence on local ecosystems for basic needs satisfaction corresponds to a “green loop” type of system, with direct feedbacks between environmental degradation and human well-being. Increasing use of distant ecosystems marks a regime shift and with that, the transition to “red loops” in which feedbacks between environmental degradation and human well-being are only indirect. These systems are characterized by a fundamentally different set of sustainability problems as well as distinct human-nature connections. The analysis of a case study in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, shows that social-ecological systems identified as green loops in 1993, the average share of households using a characteristic bundle of direct ecosystem services drops consistently (animal production, crop production, natural building materials, freshwater, wood). Conversely, in systems identified as red loops, mixed tendencies occur which underpins non-linearities in changing human-nature relationships. We propose to apply the green to red loop transition model to other geographical contexts with regards to studying the use of local ecosystem services as integral part of transformative change in the Anthropocene.

    Description: This dataset provides friction and elasticity data from ring shear and axial tests, respectively, on rock analogue materials used at the University Roma Tre (Rome, IT) in “Foamquake”, a novel seismotectonic analog model mimicking the megathrust seismic cycle (Mastella et al., under review). Two granular materials (quartz sand and Jasmine rice) have been characterized by means of internal friction coefficients µ and cohesions C. An elastic material (foam rubber) have been characterized by means of Young’s modulus E and Poisson’s ratio v. According to our analysis the granular materials show Mohr-Coulomb behaviour characterized by linear failure envelopes in the shear stress vs. normal load Mohr space. Peak, dynamic and reactivation friction coefficients of the quartz sand are µP = 0.69, µD = 0.56 and µR = 0.64, respectively. Cohesion ranges between 50 and 100 Pa. Rate-dependency of friction in quartz sand seems insignificant. Peak, dynamic and reactivation friction coefficients of the Jasmine rice are µP = 0.70, µD = 0.59 and µR = 0.61, respectively. Cohesion ranges between 30 and 50 Pa. Rate-weakening of Jasmine rice is c. 6% per tenfold change in shear velocity v. The Young’s modulus of the foam rubber has been constrained to 30 kPa, its Poisson’s ratio is v=0.1.

    Description: Projections of the sea level contribution from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets (GrIS and AIS) rely on atmospheric and oceanic drivers obtained from climate models. The Earth System Models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) generally project greater future warming compared with the previous Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) effort. Here we use four CMIP6 models and a selection of CMIP5 models to force multiple ice sheet models as part of the Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP6 (ISMIP6). We find that the projected sea level contribution at 2100 from the ice sheet model ensemble under the CMIP6 scenarios falls within the CMIP5 range for the Antarctic ice sheet but is significantly increased for Greenland. Warmer atmosphere in CMIP6 models results in higher Greenland mass loss due to surface melt. For Antarctica, CMIP6 forcing is similar to CMIP5 and mass gain from increased snowfall counteracts increased loss due to ocean warming.

    Description: The HUST-Grace2020 model is the latest GRACE-only gravity field solution developed at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The model includes a set of spherical harmonic coefficients with different maximum degrees (60 and 90), and they are all unconstrained solutions. During retrieving our model, the reprocessed GRACE L1b RL03 data is used, and the newly de-aliasing product AOD1B RL06 is applied. Further details are presented in Zhou et al. (2018, 2019).
