    Notizen: Abstract The optical properties of the nonlinear crystals lithium borate (LBO), barium borate (BBO) and deuterated potassium phosphate (KD*P) are compared for second and third harmonic generation of Nd:YAG laser radiation. In an experimental investigation the conversion efficiency has been measured as a function of the energy density of 8 ns long laser pulses, generated by a commercial Nd:YAG oscillator-amplifier system. In LBO and BBO the second harmonic generation saturates at an energy density of about 1.5 J cm−2 at efficiencies of 55–60%. In KD*P comparable efficiencies (40–55%) require energy densities of 2–2.6 J cm−2. Similar results are obtained for frequency tripling. In LBO and BBO saturated efficiencies of 20–25% are measured at an energy density of about 1.5 J cm−2. In KD*P efficiencies of 20% are obtained at energy densities exceeding 2 J cm−2. Besides for doubling and tripling of Nd:YAG laser radiation the phase-matching is calculated for frequency conversion of tunable laser light. The results demonstrate that in LBO and BBO phase-matched sum-frequency mixing of UV and infrared laser light generates tunable radiation at wavelengths as short as the transmission cut-off at 160 nm and 190 nm, respectively.

    Notizen: Abstract The photoluminescence spectra of Ti3+-doped YAlO3, Y3Al5O12 and Al2O3 crystals display weak zero-phonon lines and broad vibronic side bands. The zero-phonon lines are due to the splitting of the 2 T 2g ground state into three Kramers' doublets by the combined effects of static axial crystal field, Jahn-Teller effect and spin-orbit interaction. A molecular orbital method is used to calculate the relative intensities and polarizations of both zero-phonon lines and broad band in terms of the mixing of odd-parity ligand wavefunctions into even-parity Ti3+ wavefunctions by odd-parity crystal fields of T 1u and T 2u symmetries at sites with tetragonal and trigonal symmetries. The odd-parity distortions may be static or dynamic and are of crucial relevance in determining the strength of vibronically induced transitions. In general, selection rules for optical spectra are uniquely determined by group theory. The relevance of the molecular orbit description of the d-d transitions is that it permits a physical interpretation of the strength of optical spectra in terms of the covalent charge transfer from ligand ions to central ions induced by odd-parity crystal field distortion.

    Notizen: Abstract The Ti3+ ion in YAlO3 (YAP), Y3Al5O12 (YAG), and Al2O3 crystals occupies distorted octahedral sites relative to the nearest neighbour ligand ions. Such distortions are of even-parity in YAG where the zero-phonon lines in emission occur via magnetic dipole transitions. In contrast, the zero-phonon transitions occur by electric dipole processes in Ti3+:YAP and Ti3+:Al2O3 where there are odd-parity distortions from octahedral symmetry. This paper reports measurements of the zero-phonon lines of Ti3+ ions in YAP, YAG, and Al2O3 at 10 K. The zero-phonon lines of Ti3+:YAP are strongly polarized perpendicular to the tetragonal axis and those of Ti3+:Al2O3 parallel to the trigonal axis. The experimental results are shown to be in accord with a molecular orbital model of the radiative transition according to which the transition intensities derive from odd-parity ligand wavefunctions induced into even-parity ground and excited Ti3+ wavefunctions by odd-parity crystal distortions.

    Notizen: Abstract It is shown that for waves incident with a polarisation in the plane of the grating the component of the electric field in the direction of propagation must be included in the calculations. Coupled differential equations for both the transverse and longitudinal components are derived for wave interaction in photorefractive BaTiO3. Analytic solutions for the electric field of the signal wave are obtained under the assumption that the pump wave is undepleted. For the parameters considered the longitudinal component is shown to be negligible.

    Notizen: Abstract A new nonlinear scattering effect is described which is induced by the simultaneous action of ordinary and extraordinary waves impigning on a BaTiO3 crystal in the plane perpendicular to the c-axis. The scattered light of ordinary polarization propagates along a circular cone and the light intensity on this cone is nonuniform. We present a model that describes the experimental observations rather well, including phase matching conditions and the unusual intensity distribution of the scattered light.

In the absence of an external electric field the generated space charge field is determined by diffusion processes. The theory is in agreement with the experimental results. The angles between extraordinary and ordinary beams, the intensity and time dependence of transmitted and diffracted beams, and phase conjugation effects are measured and evaluated.

    Notizen: Abstract Sum-frequency mixing (ω3=ω1+ω2) of UV laser radiation (λ1=266 nm and 213 nm) and tunable coherent infrared light (λ2=1.2–2.6 μm) in lithium borate (LBO) generates radiation at short wavelengths (λ3=188–242 nm). The UV radiation at λ1 is produced by the fourth and fifth harmonic of a pulsed Nd-YAG laser. The infrared light is generated with an optical parametric oscillator of beta barium borate. The phase-matching angle Φ is measured as function of λ3 and compared with calculated values. For UV laser radiation at shorter wavelengths (173 nm≦λ1≦213 nm) the calculations predict an extension of the tuning range of the sum-frequency generated at λ3 to wavelengths as short as the LBO transmission cutoff at 160 nm.

    Notizen: Abstract The use of Cu-doped (K0.5Na0.5)0.2(Sr0.61Ba0.39)0.9Nb2O6 as self-pumped phase conjugators using internal reflection is reported. Reflectivities as high as 63% at 5145.5 nm and 60% at 632.8 nm were realized. It was found that the photorefractive response changes significantly at different doping concentration. The responses of the crystals to the laser wavelength, incident angle and dopant concentration are studied.

    Notizen: Abstract We report an experimental measurement, based on an interferometric technique, for the determination of the temperature dependence of the refractive index n L of a liquid suspension of dielectric spheres in the thermal range 20–52° C. In this range we have measured values of ∂n L /∂T of order of magnitude 10−4° C−1. The observed values are compared with those obtained for water.

    Notizen: Abstract The first observation of anisotropic diffraction (with a 90|Mo change of the polarization of the diffracted wave) in BaTiO3 from a grating recorded by two orthogonally polarized waves, an ordinary and an extraordinary wave, is reported. Three possible origins of this effect are considered: (i) direct one-step diffraction from a grating recorded anisotropically by spatially oscillating photovoltaic currents, (ii) indirect, sequential diffraction from two gratings, each recorded by one incident wave and an additional wave due to light-induced scattering, (iii) direct one-step diffraction from a grating with the grating vector equal to the difference of the grating vectors of two conjugated “noisy” gratings. The experimental evidence indicates that the process (iii) contributes most, and process (i) more than 10% to the overall diffraction efficiency, whereas process (ii) seems to be of minor importance.
