    Notizen: Abstract Based on SEM examinations of some 1600 species of monocotyledons out of 61 families the characteristics of their epicuticular waxes are described in this preliminary paper and illustrated by 20 SEM micrographs. Four basic types of waxes are recognized. Two of them occur throughout the monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous orders of angiosperms; two others are of high systematic significance and restricted to particular orders of the monocotyledons: The “Convallaria-Type” is characterized by fine wax platelets with parallel orientation, forming a pattern around the stomata reminiscent of electromagnetic field lines. This type is restricted to the three liliiflorous ordersAsparagales, Liliales, andBurmanniales. The “Strelitzia-Type” is characterized by massive compound wax rodlets; it is restricted to the superordersAreciflorae, Commeliniflorae, Zingiberiflorae, plus the two liliiflorous ordersBromeliales andVelloziales. The data are compared with the classifications ofDahlgren & Clifford (1982); they tentatively indicate the exclusion ofBromeliales, Velloziales, andTyphales from theLiliiflorae.

    Notizen: Abstract The groundwater along the Couze (= river) Pavin in Auvergne, France, yielded four chydorid Cladocera, among which two are known but rare species, while two are new species. One of the new species, Alona phreatica, has reduced eye and ocellus-sizes, but no other adaptations to a groundwater-mode of life are apparent. The likelihood that more phreatic species exist in other parts of Europe and elsewhere is discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract The group of hyponeustonic daphniid cladocera previously known under the generic name Scapholeberis is raised to the rank of a subfamily (Scapholeberinae) and contains two genera, Megafenestra n.gen. (2 species), and Scapholeberis s.s. (7 species and one subspecies). The characters upon which this revision is based are: structure of the rostrum, structure of the first antennae, structure of trunk limbs 1, 2, and 5, presence and nature of headpore(s), structure of the ventral rim of the valves, armature of the distal rim of the valves, structure of the postabdomen and its end-claws. Males were examined in all but two species, and proved to be more primitive than females and much less diagnostic than in the Chydoridae. It also appeared that the shape and armature of the postabdomen are less important taxonomical tools than heretofore supposed. In more than half of the species, it is of generalised shape and hardly usable beyond the species-group level. The same, although less drastically, holds true for the P1 of males. Of greatest diagnostic value at the species level are the shape of the rostrum and the armature of the valve margins. A phylogeny of the subfamily is proposed, with Megafenestra as the more primitive genus, closely allied to Ceriodaphnia, and within Scapholeberis, S. mucronata as the most apomorphic species. In biogeographical respect, no species is cosmopolitan, although their ranges may be of continental dimensions. Species and populations appear to concentrate in the temperate and continental climate belts of the northern hemisphere, but more research in the southern hemisphere is needed. A key for the identification of all species is given.

    Notizen: Abstract The existence of separated forms within the population of Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) from Lake Plußsee was demonstrated on the basis of a biometric analysis. The morphs cochlearis, hispida and tecta were definitely not connected by transitional forms. Micracantha and tecta were not links of a macracantha-micracantha-tecta-series. Hence, the general validity of Lauterborn-cycles is questioned. In this connection, the taxonomy of this species is also involved, because it is derived from the idea of phenotypic cycles in the sense of Lauterborn.

    Notizen: Abstract During a trans-Saharan expedition in 1980 a number of samples were collected from stagnant and running fresh and slightly saline water bodies. One of them, collected from the Oued En-Namous in a small oasis yielded several interesting nematodes, among which was a newHalalaimus species described herein asHalalaimus algeriensis n. sp. It comes close toH. minusculus Tchesunov, 1978, but differs in tailshape, absence of males and habitat. It also resembles the marine speciesH. gracilis de Man, 1888, but differs in the relative length of the anterior setae, the absence of a lateral field and absence of males. The new species can be differentiated fromH. stammeri Schneider, 1940, the only fresh water species found hitherto, by its shorter body, more anterior and wider fovea, and the length and position of the anterior setae. The various juvenile stages can be separated on the basis of body length, foveal length and genital primordium.

    Notizen: Abstract A nematological survey of Belgium revealed four species of Aphanolaimus, two known ones, A. attentus de Man, 1880 and A. aquaticus Daday, 1894, and two new ones. A. pseudoattentus n.sp. resembles A. attentus in many respects but can easily be distinguished by the greater body length, the head shape, the shape of the amphideal fovea and the longer cephalic setae. A. deconincki n.sp. is characterized by its head shape, shape of amphideal fovea, posterior origin of lateral field and large number of body annules.
