Notes: Abstract Twenty FIR laser lines with wavelengths between 146 and 2000 μm have been observed from deuterated formyl fluoride (DCOF) optically pumped with isotopic CO2 lasers. Tunable diode laser measurements on thev 4 band of DCOF were combined with earlier high precision spectroscopic data on thev 3 andv 4 bands, and enabled identification of the transitions responsible for 9 of the new FIR lines.

Notes: Abstract Energy efficiency has been discussed in the multi-stage laser separation of13C in the ir laser photolysis of CF3I. The comparison has been made between the two methods, i.e., the photolysis of13C molecules (ordinary method) and the photolysis of12C molecules (elimination method). The former recycles the photolyzed product after the regeneration of feed molecules, while the latter recycles the residue after the elimination of the photolyzed product. The analysis of the energy consumption using theoretical models has shown that the elimination method consumes more energy, but the difference is far less than expected; the overall energy consumption may reach the same level at a lower pressure according to our estimation which includes the factors of the quantum efficiency for the dissociation, the energy difference between the laser lines and the material loss for the regeneration. It may imply that the elimination method is more favored in a practical application because it is free from the regeneration procedure.

Notes: Abstract Multiphoton absorption (MPA) of the CO2 laser 9 μmR(30) line (pulse width 60 ns, FWHM) by NH3 and NH3/N2 mixtures was studied as a function of gas composition, pressure and laser fluence (Φ). MPA occurs for Φ smaller than those that have been used for optically pumped NH3/N2 lasers; consequently a simple two-level absorption model will not adequately describe laser action in these systems. The photon energy deposited in NH3/N2 mixtures can be calculated from the MPA cross-section and the fluence dependence of the illumination geometry. An examination of the efficiency of conversion of this absorbed energy to the reported radiant energy of optically pumped NH3/N2 lasers shows an optimum value which depends on pressure, and gas composition.

Notes: Abstract A laser photodesorption microscope has been applied to obtain 4×103-fold images of rhodamine crystals on a tip with a diameter of 66μm. Peculiarities of the formation of these images have been studied with different values of electric field strength on the tip and laser pulse intensities.

Notes: Abstract The vibrational relaxation time constant for theB v=0 vibrational level of XeCl* has been investigated by observing the coupling between theB v=1 andB v=0 vibrational levels under saturated lasing conditions. Based on this observation, estimates of the expected extraction efficiency from theB-state have been made.

Notes: Abstract The three-level probe spectroscopy of Doppler-broadened transitions in the presence of a standing wave pump laser is investigated through a diagrammatic method. A probe-response diagram is defined where the resonance positions versus the probe laser frequency and absorber velocity are plotted. The dressed atom description provides a convenient method for deriving the probe response diagram and calculating the position of the Doppler-free structures on the absorption spectrum, including the ac Stark shifts. We have interpreted probe spectra on the basis of the probe response diagram, presenting new features and giving a detailed physical interpretation of all the coherent effects appearing in the spectra. Population effects are not included in the dressed system analysis and are calculated on the basis of a semiclassical treatment, but the probe response diagram provides a complete interpretation of the involved phenomena.

Notes: Abstract We report on the multistep ionization process observed in CS2 vapour irradiated by 337 nm nitrogen laser light. We propose and discuss a model in which optical as well as collisional excitation are involved in the ionization process.

Notes: Abstract C2F3Cl is photolyzed with a TEA-CO2 laser at 1050.44 cm−1 with focussed fluences up to 280 J/cm2. The stable products in the IRMPD of C2F3Cl are determined for up to 10 Torr of C2F3Cl being photolyzed both neat and with added O2. C2F4 and trans-C2F2Cl2 are found to occur in the greatest yield though C3F5Cl, C3F4Cl2, C4F7Cl, and C2F3Cl3 also appear to be primary products. When O2 is present F2CO, FClCO, and CF2ClCOF are the exclusive products. The formation of these products are for the most part consistent with a carbene formation dissociation mechanism for C2F3Cl IRMPD. C2F3Cl3 may best be explained by another mechanism competitive with carbene formation. Many products attributed to secondary photolysis mechanisms are observed for long photolysis times.

Notes: Abstract A differential detection scheme to reduce source noise and to improve sensitivity based upon the Faraday effect has been developed. This method is particularly useful in connection with low-power, high-noise laser sources and multipass arrangements where a degradation of polarization quality is substantial. The theoretical background of the differential method is developed. It is tested with magnetic rotation signals from transitions of stable species with low modulation sensitivity and signals from free radicals.

Notes: Abstract There is a general agreement that efficient infrafed laser induced separation of carbon isotopes requires a two-stage process. An efficient first stage 1%→50%13C enrichment was shown by Gauthier et al. [1] to be feasible and competitive with conventional technology. In this work, second-stage CO2 laser enrichment of equimolar mixtures of12CHClF2 and13CHClF2 has been demonstrated yielding tetrafluoroethylene containing 95% or 99%13C. Forward enrichment by selective decomposition of the13CHClF2 fraction was very efficient, absorbing only 6 and 16 eV, respectively, per carbon atom produced at 95% and 99%13C content.
