    Description: Narrow-angle astrometry has many astrophysical applications, from the measurement of parallaxes to the search for planets around nearby stars. Ground-based long-focus telescopes with photoelectric detectors have achieved accuracies of about 2-3 milliarcsec in 1 h. This accuracy is limited primarily by the atmosphere, and is consistent with models of atmospheric turbulence. However, applying these turbulence models to observations with long-baseline interferometers yields astrometric errors that are far smaller than can be achieved with long-focus telescopes. The predictions for the ultimate accuracy of ground-based narrow-angle astrometry using long-baseline IR (2.2 micron) stellar interferometers are very promising. With the excellent seeing at a high altitude site like Mauna Kea, the atmospheric limit for a 1 h astrometric measurement is expected to be of the order of 10 microarcsec for 1 h of integration. This two-order-of-magnitude improvement over conventional measurements is due to two effects. One is that a long-baseline IR interferometer can find useful reference stars very near an arbitrary target star, so that the atmospherically-induced motions of both stars are highly correlated. The second is that the baseline length can be much larger than the separation of the stellar beams in the turbulent atmosphere, resulting in a reduction in astrometric error with increasing baseline length.

    Description: Prospects for lunar-based astronomy and the development of the required technologies are briefly reviewed. A systematic approach to lunar-based astronomy includes a progression in capability from small automated telescopes to the 16-meter reflector on the moon. A next step beyond the 16-meter reflector will be a Lunar Optical/Ultraviolet/Infrared Synthesis Array. Intermediate steps are represented by the Lunar Transit Telescope and the Lunar Cluster Telescope Experiment. Priorities for the required technology development are identified.

    Description: The Lunar Telescope Working Group of the Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA, has conducted conceptual studies of an evolutionary family of UV/ optical/IR telescopes to be based on the lunar surface. Included are: (1) the 16-m aperture Large Lunar Telescope; (2) the 4-m aperture precursor Lunar Cluster Telescope Experiment; and (3) the 2-m Lunar Transit Telescope proposed by John McGraw of the Steward Observatory. Development and emplacement of these advanced astronomical facilities would parallel the buildup of an initial lunar exploration site, an early lunar outpost, and a permanent lunar base. The Working Group has examined the feasibility of constructing such telescopes and assessed technology, subsystem, system, transportation, and operations requirements for their development and emplacement. Influences of the lunar environment and site selection on telescope design and operation were also evaluated.

    Description: The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) detects any gamma-ray burst not obscured by the earth and intense enough to produce a sufficiently strong signal in at least two of its eight large area NaI detectors (LADs). For a given intensity, a LAD records a stronger signal from a source which directly faces it than from a source to its side. Thus, BATSE's detection of a gamma-ray burst may depend upon the burst's direction. We discuss the effect of this uneven exposure to the sky on the instrument's measurement of the distribution of gamma-ray burst directions and intensities, and we describe our method of accounting for the effect.

    Description: The goal of the Germanium GAlactic Plane Patrol mission (GGAPP) is to provide a continuous monitor of the Galactic Plane (GP) for variable sources of gamma-ray lines. Potentially interesting sources include black hole candidates, X-ray binary systems, pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, and solar flares. The GGAPP instrument is an array of Ge detectors cooled by a mechanical refrigerator to achieve a spectral resolution of 2 keV at 1 MeV (1/500). A bismuth germanate (BGO) shield will restrict the field-of-view (FOV) to within 20 deg of the GP, and a modulation collimator system will locate strong sources to less than 0.3 deg in galactic longitude, provide a direct means of subtracting background, and mapping the diffuse emission from the GP. The spacecraft will be rotationally stabilized with the spin axis perpendicular to the GP such that the modulator scans in galactic longitude. A HEO or L1 orbit will keep GGAPP far away from the strong background produced by the Earth. GGAPP will provide a natural bridge between GRO and future missions such as INTEGRAL/NAE.

    Description: The effect of varying BATSE trigger parameters on the modeled BATSE detection rate is investigated numerically. Quantitative estimates are obtained of the systematic effects generated by the complex interplay of trigger times, variations in the signal-to-noise ratio for burst detection as well as the time scale over which backgrounds are determined, and the number of required detections above threshold. It is found, in particular that employing a third detection, at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio, to resolve a burst does not increase the detection rate. It is also shown that the BATSE detection rate is insensitive to variations in the time scale over which the background is determined.

    Description: The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) consists of eight anisotropic gamma-ray spectrometers at the corners of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. BATSE monitors the full sky from a fixed orientation and determines the direction of gamma-ray bursts with an accuracy appropriate for studying the bursts' celestial distribution. We describe the calculation of gamma-ray burst directions from measurements made by BATSE. We present a sample of calculated directions from BATSE's measurement of solar flaxes and compare the calculated directions with the solar direction. We describe the systematic errors apparent in these data and discuss ongoing efforts to correct them.

    Description: This status report presents some details on the project 'Search for time-correlated optical counterparts of gamma-ray bursters'. The photographic sky patrol of the three observatories Sonneberg (FRG), Ondrejov (CSFR), and Odessa (USSR) is used to look for patrol plates which have been exposed simultaneously with a gamma-ray burst detected by GRO. Our expectations and the very first results are presented.

    Description: We have developed seven compact soft X-ray/EUV (XUV) multilayer coated and two compact FUV interference film coated Cassegrain and Ritchey-Chretien telescopes for a rocket borne observatory, the Multi-Spectral Solar Telescope Array.     Description: A major component of the Advanced Solar Observatory is the High Resolution Telescope Cluster (HRTC) for investigations of the solar atmosphere at soft X-ray, XUV, EUV, and VUV wavelengths, via high resolution spectroheliograms in lines and continuum emitted over the full, (4500 to 100,000,000 K) range of temperatures of the outer solar atmosphere; angular resolution may be as high as 0.03 arcsec. An analysis is conducted of a model HRTC instrument complement encompassing a 60-90 cm aperture VUV telescope, a 40-50 cm aperture EUV telescope, three 40-50 cm aperture XUV telescopes, and a 40-cm aperture soft X-ray telescope, as well as flare spectrometers and polarimeters and four coronagraph/spectrographs.

    Description: The Solar/Stellar Coronal Explorer (SSCE) carries six identical Ritchey-Chretien Telescopes of 127 mm aperture each; their images will be recorded by multianode microchannel-array detectors. The mirrors of five of the telescopes are coated with multilayer reflecting structures that select narrow XUV wavelength bands corresponding to strong emission lines emitted by solar or stellar coronal plasmas. Also noted here is a larger explorer mission concept, that of the Solar/Stellar Coronal Observatory, which will undertake more extensive spectroscopic observations.

    Description: The Ultra-High Resolution XUV Spectroheliograph (UHRXS) is a comprehensive solar observatory capable of studying solar phenomena at soft X-ray, XUV, EUV, and VUV wavelengths with normal incidence imaging multilayer telescopes capable of very high angular resolution (about 0.1 arcsec), and spectrographs able to achieve high spectral resolution. This instrument has been selected by NASA for flight as an attached payload on the Space Station Freedom. Recent developments have made it clear that accommodations for attached payloads on Freedom will not become available during the initial operations of Freedom and may never be available. We have studied the changes that must be made to place the UHRXS instrument on a Free Flying Plafform such as the Delta Launched Explorer Bus. We report on the configuration, performance, and accommodation on a free flying platform of the revised UHRXS concept.

    Description: The Multi-Spectral Solar Telescope Array (MSSTA) is a sounding rocket-borne solar observatory which was succesfully launched on May 13, 1991, from the White Sands Missile Range, NM. Ultrahigh resolution, full-disk solar X-ray, EUV, and FUV images were obtained with the MSSTA Herschelian, Cassegrain, and Ritchey-Chretien telescopes. We describe the payload and provide some preliminary scientific results from the flight.

    Description: The Broad-Band X-Ray Telescope (BBXRT) was designed to carry out moderate resolution spectrophotometry of cosmic X-ray sources in the 0.3-12 keV band from the Space Shuttle. It consists of a pair of coaligned conical foil telescopes, with cryogenically cooled Si(Li) spectrometers as focal instruments. It was flown as part of the Astro-1 mission in December, 1990. The in-flight performance of the instrument was essentially as predicted on the basis of ground calibration and modelling. We discuss the performance of the system, with emphasis on the conical mirror systems, and present some preliminary scientific results which illustrate the power of broad band, high sensitivity X-ray spectrophotometry.

    Description: VLBI observations of the optically bright radio-emitting star Sigma Coronae Borealis (Sigma CrB) have yielded its position relative to an angularly nearby quasar, its annual proper motion and its trigonometric parallax with formal uncertainties slightly better than 0.2 milliarcsec. This is the first result of the VLBI astrometric program we are conducting on 11 radio stars similar to Sigma CrB. We plan to obtain comparable results for all stars when enough epochs of observations are acquired. These stars will be used to astrometrically link the Hipparcos and VLBI extragalactic reference frames.

    Description: The galactic cosmic-ray flux incident on the moon was examined for its potential adverse impact on the performance of the large lunar telescope (LLT) proposed as a part of NASA's Space Exploration Initiative (SEI). Noise produced by the cosmic-ray flux in the charge coupled devices to be used as the primary photodetector in the telescope was estimated. It was calculated that approximately 2.5 m of regolith would provide the shielding necessary to reduce the noise to an acceptable level. Dust is an omnipresent environmental concern for any human-assisted or robotic scientific instruments deployed on the moon. The degree to which dust poses an operational risk to the telescope was examined. Three potential methods for reducing this risk were identified: locating scientific instruments at remote locations; utilizing a prepared, dust-free site for all rocket activities; and covering the optics during high-risk times.

    Description: Plans for constructing permanent lunar bases and observatories under the Space Exploration Initiative are examined. The advantages of the lunar environment for astronomical observations are briefly reviewed, and the proposed lunar facilities are discussed. In particular, attention is given to a lunar optical interferometer, a submillimeter interferometer, a VLF radio array on the lunar far side, a large optical telescope, and a large installation for detecting gravitational waves. Each of the proposed instruments and their capabilities and configurations are discussed, as are possible experiments that may reduce the uncertainty and risk involved in setting up these facilities.

    Description: The objective of multi-use telescopes is to reduce the initial and operational costs of space telescopes to the point where a fair number of telescopes, a dozen or so, would be affordable. The basic approach is to develop a common telescope, control system, and power and communications subsystem that can be used with a wide variety of instrument payloads, i.e., imaging CCD cameras, photometers, spectrographs, etc. By having such a multi-use and multi-user telescope, a common practice for earth-based telescopes, development cost can be shared across many telescopes, and the telescopes can be produced in economical batches.

    Description: It is argued that increases in the precision of photometric measurements and the development of fully automatic photometric telescopes (APTs) now make possible the detection of Jupiter-size objects around other stars. The two most promising approaches are to monitor binary stars that have their orbital plane nearly in our line of sight and to measure the rotation periods of stars that are known to have dark companions and have very accurate values for Vsini. Differential photometry with APTs, based on a rapid comparison among a group of stars, provides a precision of 2 parts in 1000. Transits of solar-type stars by planets or brown dwarfs the size of Jupiter or Saturn will produce brightness variations of about 10 parts per 1000.

    Description: The paper describes some of the high-energy observations of the Crab-Nebula pulsar, PSR0531+22. The pulse profiles of the Crab pulsar obtained in balloon-borne observations in 1967 and 1980 are presented. At present, gamma-ray scintillation detectors aboard the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) form the basis of the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE). The pulsar, which is observed daily by the BATSE, is used by all four GRO/BATSE detectors as a calibration source since it emits a steady, strong, well-known spectrum of gamma rays over the entire energy range to which detectors are sensitive. The paper presents an example of a pulse profile obtained with the BATSE.

    Description: The history and the current status of optical and infrared long-baseline interferometry are reviewed. In particular, attention is given to Michelson interferometry; the Mark III stellar interferometer and its applications to astrometry, measurement of stellar diameters, and observations of binary stars; and advanced techniques.     Description: This article provides the reduced astrographic observations of the major Uranian satellites derived from star-satellite imaging data acquired by the Voyager 2 spacecraft. The data set contains 445 sets of spacecraft-centered right ascension and declination observations and includes all of the observations used in Voyager encounter operations. The conversion process from imaging to astrographic observations was identical to that used for the Neptunian satellites (Jacobson 1991). The effect of using the astrographic rather than imaging form in ephemeris improvement is evaluated.

    Description: Results are presented from a computer simulation in which dust grains of three different sizes were released at perihelion passage from each of (1) 15 main belt asteroids, (2) 15 short-period comets with perihelion greater than 1 AU, and (3) 5 such comets with perihelion less than 1 AU. The evolving-orbit calculations for each of the dust rains include the effects of solar and planetary gravity, radiation pressure, Poynting-Robertson drag, and solar wind drag. It is noted that when dust grains evolve to intersection with the earth's orbit, they retain orbital characteristics indicative of their origins.

    Description: Latest observations by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are described, including the first 'parallel' observations (on January 6, 1992) by the two of the Hubble's instruments of two different targets at the same time. On this date, the faint-object camera made images of the quasar 3C 273 in Virgo, while the wide-field and planetary camera recorded an adjacent field. The new HST images include those of the nucleus and the jet of M85, the giant elliptical galaxy at the heart of the Virgo cluster, and what appears to be a black hole of mass 2.6 billion solar masses in M87, and an image of N66, a planetary nebula in the LMC. Other images yield evidence of 'blue stragglers' in the core of 47 Tucanae, a globular cluster about 16,000 light-years from earth. The Goddard spectrograph recorded the spectrum of the star Capella at very high wavelength resolution, which made it possible to measure deuterium from the Big Bang.

    Description: Seventy-seven extragalactic radio sources north of -2 deg declination have been observed using Mark III VLBI during 13 experiments from 1988 October to 1989 November. Radio positions derived from these observations supplement an ongoing project to define and maintain an all-sky radio/optical reference frame of 400 or more extragalactic sources with milliarcsecond (mas) accurate radio and optical positions. Positions for 11 new sources are presented along with improved positions for 54 sources already in the reference-frame catalog. An additional five sources have been determined to be unsuitable reference-frame objects. Observations of seven calibration sources tie the new positions to the existing catalog. The radio positions of the new sources have formal mean errors of about 0.7 mas in each coordinate. Sources for which improved positions are reported now have formal errors not greater than 1 mas, an improvement in some cases by as much as 85 percent. The complementary optical program is addressed briefly.

    Description: The Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) Telescope consists of six concentric paraboloid-hyperboloid pairs of mirrors that operate near grazing incidence. Because of the substantial polarization effects at large angles of incidence there has been concern regarding the feasibility of doing polarimetry near the telescope focal plane. The primary mirror is here shown to act as a tangentially directed half-wave linear retarder and almost completely to depolarize the linearly polarized component of the light. The secondary mirror introduces and additional half-wave of linear retardance. The two-mirror telescope assembly acts as a tangentially directed one-wave linear retarder. Each mirror depolarizes alone but together the two-mirror assembly preserves the polarization state. The net instrumental polarization effects are small and polarimetry is feasible with AXAF.

    Description: The orbit of the double-lined spectroscopic binary Phi Cygni, the distance to the system, and the masses and absolute magnitudes of its components are presented via measurements with the Mar III Optical Interferometer. On the basis of a reexamination of the spectroscopic data of Rach & Herbig (1961), the values and uncertainties are adopted for the period and the projected semimajor axes from the present fit to the spectroscopic data and the values of the remaining elements from the present fit to the Mark III data. The elements of the true orbit are derived, and the masses and absolute magnitudes of the components, and the distance to the system are calculated.

    Description: The High Resoltuion Spectrograph (HRS) in conjunction with the Space Telescope (ST), extends ultraviolet astronomical spectroscopy to higher spectra, spatial, and time resolutions than previously achieved, as well as to fainter and more distant celestial objects. Other significant advances inherent in the instrument are high photometric accuracy and efficient operation via exposure meter control and real time rejection of bad data. These capabilities are provided to accomplish the scientific programs of the HRS investigation definition team, which concern the interstellar medium, stellar winds, and evolutionary aspects of stellar atmosphere studies; the determination of chemical abundances relevant to stellar evolution; the investigation of quasars and Seyfert galaxy nuclei; and the analysis of the atmospheres of solar system objects, including comets.

    Description: The position of Venus in the radio reference frame was measured on the basis of an observation of an occultation of the compact radio source P0507 + 17 by Venus on July 19, 1988. By comparing model light curves to the observed light curves for both ingress and egress, the frame-tie offsets Delta(lambda) and Delta(beta) (ecliptic longitude and latitude) were determined. The solution for both Delta(lambda) and Delta(beta) gave results consistent with zero offsets, but with an error of about 0.2 arcsec. The egress light curve alone yielded higher accuracy for a linear combination of Delta(lambda) and Delta(beta): Delta(lambda) + 0.51 Delta(beta) = 0.026 +/-0.04 arcsec.

    Description: An overview of a NASA/JPL antenna project is presented, with specific focus on the methodology used to predict the microwave performance of a 34-m-diameter beam-waveguide (BWG) reflector antenna, designated DSS 13 (Deep Space Station 13). DSS 13 is the R&D facility serving the NASA/JPL Deep Space Network. Microwave performance predictions as well as a summary of test results for the antenna are given. The antenna has Cassegrain and centerline BWG operating modes at X-band (8.450-GHz) and Ka-band (32-GHz) frequencies. The performance predictions regarding antenna area efficiencies, corresponding beampeak gains, and for several (but not all) operating noise temperatures are found to agree reasonably well with the corresponding experimental results.

The IRAC uses large area, 2D infrared array detectors to provide wide-field (7 arcmin) and diffraction-limited imaging over the spectral region from 2 to 30 microns. The MIP will provide background-limited imaging and photometry over the wavelength range from 30 to 200 microns, wide-field, high resolution imaging from 50 to 120 microns, and broad band photometry and mapping from 200 to 700 microns.

    Description: AS 296 is a well-known S-type symbiotic star which underwent an optical outburst during 1988. In this paper, UV data based on IUE observations obtained both during the quiescent and outburst stages are presented and discussed, correlating them to observations made in the optical region. It is concluded that the object is a symbiotic nova, in which the outburst is due to a thermonuclear runaway produced in the hydrogen-burning shell of a white dwarf with M of about 0.5 solar masses, accreting from the late-type giant at a rate M(acc) of about 9.7 x 10 exp -9 solar mass/year. It is not possible to determine from the observations if the hydrogen flash is degenerate or nondegenerate.

    Description: The question of lunar occultation visibility of stars is examined from both a theoretical and an observational viewpoint. The background light caused by the lunar surface, the brightness caused by the lunar glare, the brightness of the sky for dark, twilight, and daytime conditions, and the effects of the telescopic optics are taken into consideration. The results are compared to give the limit on stellar visibility at the time of a lunar occultation, and the model results are graphically demonstrated as a function of various input parameters. Comparisons with observations show good agreement, with an uncertainty of about one-third of a magnitude.

    Description: For the 30 asteroids and 4 comets for which radar astrometric data were given by Ostro (1991), orbits have been computed using both the radar and the existing optical measurements. The techniques required to process radar data in orbit determination solutions are outlined, and future radar observation opportunities for asteroids and comets are identified. For asteroids and comets that have only short intervals of optical astrometric data, the additional use of only a few radar observations allows a far more accurate extrapolation of their future motions. The use of radar data can often ensure an object's successful recovery at future earth returns and greatly assist efforts in monitoring the motions of the rapidly growing population of known near-earth objects, including their future close-earth approaches.

    Description: The superheterodyne detection technique used for the spectrometer instrument of the PRONAOS project will provide a very high spectral resolution (delta nu/nu = 10(exp -6)). The most critical components are those located at the front-end of the receiver: their contribution dominates the total noise of the receiver. Therefore, it is important to perform accurate studies for specific components, such as mixers and multipliers working in the submillimeter wave range. Difficulties in generating enough local oscillator (LO) power at high frequencies make SIS mixers very desirable for operation above 300 GHz. The low LO power requirements and the low noise temperature of these mixers are the primary reason for building an SIS receiver. This paper reports the successful fabrication of small (less than or equal to 1 sq micron) Nb/Al-O(x)/Nb junctions and arrays with excellent I-V characteristics and very good reliability, resulting in a low noise receiver performance measured in the 368/380 GHz frequency range.

    Description: The observation of meteor trails by a vertical mesosphere - stratosphere - troposphere (MST) radar beam has the advantage of good height resolution and an approximate knowledge of the zenith angle since the trails are horizontal or near-horizontal. An extension of the ablation theory of meteors was developed for near horizontal trails which takes into account the curvature of the earth. Observations of the Geminid meteor shower by MST radar reveal the 'diffusion heights' to be in fair agreement with the true height, but with some discrepancies that can amount to 4 km. The true heights are almost entirely confined to the range 87-91 km, although the upper limit is attributed to the coherent integration time of the existing MST radar processing.

    Description: Forward-scatter systems have been much neglected for the study of meteors and meteor streams. A great deal of this neglect stems from the complicated geometry which has made the interpretation of results difficult in the past. This no longer presents a problem because of the computer power now available. There are practical advantages in using forward-scatter in that low-power transmitters are much easier to handle than the high-power ones used in pulsed back-scatter radars. The data reduction of the CW signals is also significantly simpler. Because the forward-scatter reflection geometry increases the duration of the echoes relative to the back-scatter case, the problem of the underdense ceiling is partially alleviated. We have built a 'short hop' forward-scatter system between Ottawa and London (Ont) for which the transmitter and receiver are separated by about 500 km. With it, we are able to measure unambiguously the directions of arrival of the echoes using a 5-antenna interferometer. Morton and Jones (1982, MN, 198, 737) have shown how the echo direction distribution can be deconvolved to yield the meteor radiant distribution for back-scatter data. We have extended the technique to the forward-scatter case and present some preliminary meteor radiant distribution maps.

    Description: Ground-based interferometry will make spectacular strides in the next decade. However, it will always be limited by the turbulence of the terrestrial atmosphere. Some of the most exciting and subtle problems may only be addressed from a stable platform above the atmosphere. The lunar surface offers such a platform, nearly ideal in many respects. Once built, such a telescope array will not only resolve key fundamental problems, but will revolutionize virtually every topic in observational astronomy. Estimates of the possible performance of lunar and ground-based interferometers of the 21st century shows that the lunar interferometer reaches the faintest sources of all wavelengths, but has the most significant advantage in the infrared.

    Description: We describe here a proposed orbiting interferometer covering the UV, visible, and near-IR spectral ranges. With a 6-m baseline and a collecting area equivalent to about a 1.4 m diameter full aperture, this instrument will offer significant improvements in resolution over the Hubble Space Telescope, and complement the new generation of ground-based interferometers with much better limiting magnitude and spectral coverage. On the other hand, it has been designed as a considerably less ambitious project (one launch) than other current proposals. We believe that this concept is feasible given current technological capabilities, yet would serve to prove the concepts necessary for the much larger systems that must eventually be flown. The interferometer is of the Fizeau type. It therefore has a much larger field (for guiding) better UV throughout (only 4 surfaces) than phased arrays. Optimize aperture configurations and ideas for the cophasing and coalignment system are presented. The interferometer would be placed in a geosynchronous or sunsynchronous orbit to minimize thermal and mechanical disturbances and to maximize observing efficiency.

    Description: For the last two years we have embarked on a program of understanding the ultimate limits of ground-based optical imaging. We have designed and fabricated a camera specifically for high resolution imaging. This camera has now been pressed into service at the prime focus of the Hale 5 m telescope. We have concentrated on two techniques: the Non-Redundant Masking (NRM) and Weigelt's Fully Filled Aperture (FFA) method. The former is the optical analog of radio interferometry and the latter is a higher order extension of the Labeyrie autocorrelation method. As in radio Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), both these techniques essentially measure the closure phase and, hence, true image construction is possible. We have successfully imaged binary stars and asteroids with angular resolution approaching the diffraction limit of the telescope and image quality approaching that of a typical radio VLBI map. In addition, we have carried out analytical and simulation studies to determine the ultimate limits of ground-based optical imaging, the limits of space-based interferometric imaging, and investigated the details of imaging tradeoffs of beam combination in optical interferometers.

    Description: By arguing that the limiting noise is the photoelectron shot noise, we show that the sensitivity of image synthesis by an ideal optical interferometer is independent of the details of beam-splitting and recombination. The signal-to-noise ratio of the synthesized image is proportional to the square root of the total number of photoelectrons detected by the entire array. For non-ideal interferometers, which are forced to employ a closure-phase method of indirect inference of the visibility data, essentially the same result holds for strong sources, but at weak light levels beam-splitting degrades sensitivity.

    Description: We present evidence that the X-ray Nova Muscae system contains a massive, greater than 10 M solarmass, black hole. A recently measured photometric binary mass function gives the black hole mass for this system as a function of orbital inclination angle. From the spectral redshift and width of the positron annihilation gamma-ray line observed by GRANAT/SIGMA, we find the accretion disk inclination angle to be 22 deg plus or minus 18 deg. Assuming the accretion disk lies in the orbital plane of the system, the black hole mass is found to have a lower limit of 14 M solar mass although statistics are poor. This is supported by spectral modeling of combined optical/UV/x-ray/gamma-ray data and by a new Nova Muscae distance limit we derive of greater than 3 kpc. The large mass for this black hole and the high binary mass ratio it implies (greater than 20) raise a serious challenge to theoretical models of the formation and evolution of massive binaries. The gamma-ray line technique introduced here can give tight constraints on orbital parameters when high-sensitivity line measurements are made by such missions as GRO.

    Description: Observations of P/Tempel 2 from 1899 to 1988 corresponding to 13 apparitions are analyzed in order to estimate the perihelion asymmetry of the gas production curve for different periods of its evolution. Using the correlation found by Festou et al. (1990) between the perihelion asymmetries and the delay in perihelion passage due to the action of nongravitational forces, we estimate the mass of the comet to be M approximately equals 1.6 plus or minus 0.5 x 10(exp 14) kg. Assuming a volume of 500 cu km, based on nuclear observations, a density of 0.3 plus or minus 0.1 g/cu cm is obtained.

    Description: The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory consists of two banks of eight instruments referred to as the Large Area Detectors (LADs) and the Spectroscopic Detectors (SDs). Each LAD crystal is 50.8 cm in diameter by 1.27 cm thick while for a SD these values are 12.7 cm in diameter by 7.62 cm in diameter. Both the LADs and SDs are NaI(TI) scintillation detectors. The LADs and SDs are situated on the CGRO spacecraft so as to provide all sky coverage for both sets of detectors. The SDs have the ability to measure energies in the 8-16 keV range whereas the minimum energy at which the LADs operate is near 20 keV. SCO X-1 is the brightest continuous x-ray source in the sky. It is believed to consist of a low mass star orbiting and transferring mass onto a neutron star. It is representative of a class of similar objects referred to as low mass x-ray binaries (LMXB). Because SCO X-1 serves as the prototype of this class of x-ray emitters and since its detectable emission is so large, it warrants extended study. One of the most fruitful techniques of studying a LMXB system is by simultaneously monitoring its emission at a variety of different wavelengths. These correlated datasets can be used to probe the source environment, investigate emission mechanisms, and examine the mass transfer process itself. In principle, the BATSE SDs have the capability of providing a nearly continuous 8-16 keV record of SCO X-1 activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using the BATSE SDs along with simultaneous optical measurements to study this source.

    Description: The lunar telescope project was an excellent model for the CSTI study because a telescope is a very sensitive instrument, and thermal expansion or mechanical vibration of the mirror assemblies will rapidly degrade the resolution of the device. Consequently, the interactions are strongly coupled. The lunar surface experiences very large temperature variations that range from approximately -180 C to over 100 C. Although the optical assemblies of the telescopes will be well insulated, the temperature of the mirrors will inevitably fluctuate in a similar cycle, but of much smaller magnitude. In order to obtain images of high quality and clarity, allowable thermal deformations of any point on a mirror must be less than 1 micron. Initial estimates indicate that this corresponds to a temperature variation of much less than 1 deg through the thickness of the mirror. Therefore, a lunar telescope design will most probably include active thermal control, a means of controlling the shape of the mirrors, or a combination of both systems. Historically, the design of a complex vehicle was primarily a sequential process in which the basic structure was defined without concurrent detailed analyses or other subsystems. The basic configuration was then passed to the different teams responsible for each subsystem, and their task was to produce a workable solution without requiring major alterations to any principal components or subsystems. Consequently, the final design of the vehicle was not always the most efficient, owing to the fact that each subsystem design was partially constrained by the previous work. This procedure was necessary at the time because the analysis process was extremely time-consuming and had to be started over with each significant alteration of the vehicle. With recent advances in the power and capacity of small computers, and the parallel development of powerful software in structural, thermal, and control system analysis, it is now possible to produce very detailed analyses of intermediate designs in a much shorter period of time. The subsystems can thus be designed concurrently, and alterations in the overall design can be quickly adopted into each analysis; the design becomes an iterative process in which it is much easier to experiment with new ideas, configurations, and components. Concurrent engineering has the potential to produce efficient, highly capable designs because the effect of one subystem on another can be assessed in much more detail at a very early point in the program. The research program consisted of several tasks: scale a prototype telescope assembly to a 1 m aperture, develop a model of the telescope assembly by using finite element (FEM) codes that are available on site, determine structural deflections of the mirror surfaces due to the temperature variations, develop a prototype control system to maintain the proper shape of the optical elements, and most important of all, demonstrate the concurrent engineering approach with this example. In addition, the software used for the finite element models and thermal analysis was relatively new within the Program Development Office and had yet to be applied to systems this large or complex; understanding the software and modifying it for use with this project was also required. The I-DEAS software by Structural Dynamics Research Corporation (SDRC) was used to build the finite element models, and TMG developed by Maya Heat Transfer Technologies, Ltd. (which runs as an I-DEAS module) was used for the thermal model calculations. All control system development was accomplished with MATRIX(sub X) by Integrated Systems, Inc.

    Description: The engineering study group in the LOUISA workshop was responsible for producing a preliminary general design for an optical synthetic aperture telescope on the Moon. This design is intended to be a test case for focusing continuing design studies. The scope of the design included consideration of the array geometry, individual telescopes, metrology, site attributes, and construction. However, no attempt was made to go into further depth in the design than to cover the essential characteristics of the instrument. The starting point for the array design was the lunar optical array discussed by Burke (1985). His array geometry followed the design and correlation procedure of the 27-element Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescopes near Socorro, New Mexico.

    Description: Optical observations on the Earth must cope with the refractive disturbances of the atmosphere, perturbations by the day-to-night thermal cycle, vibrations induced by the wind, and the bending of the telescope by gravity. These all conspire to limit telescope performance. In particular, in trying to improve angular resolution, there seems to be a practical limit of the order of a few tenths of an arc-second for the realizable angular resolution of single-aperture telescopes, largely imposed by the atmosphere, although other structural limitations would appear as limits at one-tenth of an arc-second or so.

    Description: The technical requirements and performance of a first generation space interferometer is discussed. The performance of an interferometer, sensitivity, field of view, dynamic range, astrometric accuracy, etc, in space is set by what cannot be achieved for a ground-based instrument. For the Orbiting Space Interferometer (OSI), the nominal performance parameters are 20 mag sensitivity, field of view of approximately 500*500 pixels, a 1000:1 dynamic range in the image with one milliarcsec resolution, and an astrometric accuracy of 0.1 milliarcsec for wide angle astrometry and 10 microarcsec accuracy for narrow field astrometry (few degrees). OSI is a fully phased interferometer where all critical optical paths are controlled to 0.05 wavelengths. The instrument uses two guide interferometers locked on bright stars several degrees away to provide the spacecraft attitude information needed to keep the fringes from the faint science object stable on the detector.

    Description: Resolution is the greatest constraint in observational astronomy. The Earth's atmosphere causes on optical image to blur to about 1 arcsec or greater. Interferometric techniques have been developed to overcome atmospheric limitations for both filled aperture conventional telescopes and for partially filled aperture telescopes, such as the Michelson or the radio interferometer. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) represents the first step toward space based optical astronomy. The HST represents an immediate short term evolution of observational optical astronomy. A longer time scale of evolution is focused on and the benefits are considered to astronomy of placing an array of telescopes on the Moon at a time when a permanent base may exist there.

    Description: The discovery of 13 serendipitous BL Lac objects in the Einstein IPC Slew Survey by means of x ray/radio vs. x ray/optical color-color diagrams and confirmation by optical spectroscopy are reported. These 13 BL Lacs were discovered using a technique which exploits the characteristic broad band spectra of BL Lacs. New VLA detections provide accurate fluxes (f(6 cm) is approximately 0.5 mJy) and 2 in. positions, facilitating the determination of an optical counterpart. All 13 new BL Lacs show essentially featureless optical spectra. Nine of these lie within the range of colors of known x ray selected BL Lacs. Of the remaining four, one is apparently x ray louder (by a factor of 1.5) or optically quieter (by 0.8 mags); and three are optically louder (by 1-1.3 mags) than x ray selected BL Lacs. Approximately 50 new BL Lacs in total are expected from VLA work and upcoming Australia Telescope observations, yielding a complete Slew Survey sample of approximately 90 BL Lacs.

    Description: The results of CCD searches for satellites of asteroids 146 Lucina and 3 Juno are reported. Juno is one of the largest asteroids (D = 244 km); no previous deep imaging search for satellites around it has been reported. A potential occultation detection of a small satellite orbiting 146 Lucina (D = 137 km) km was reported by Arlot et al. (1985), but has not been confirmed. Using the 2.1 m reflector at McDonald Observatory in 1990 and 1991 with a CCD camera equipped with a 2.7 arc-sec radius occulting disk, limiting magnitudes of m(sub R) = 19.5 and m(sub R) = 21.4 were achieved around these two asteroids. This corresponds to objects of 1.6 km radius at Juno's albedo and distance, and 0.6 km radius at Lucina's albedo and distance. No satellite detections were made. Unless satellites were located behind our occultation mask, these two asteroids do not have satellites larger than the radii given above.

    Description: The Spacewatch telescope on Kitt Peak is being used to survey for near-earth asteroids using a Tektronix TK2048 CCD in scanning mode. We hope to identify suitable low delta v candidates amongst the near-earth asteroid population as possible exploration targets, to identify those objects which pose a danger to life on earth, and to study the physical properties of the objects in near-earth space. Between Sep. 1990 and Jun. 1991, 14 new earth-approaching asteroids including 1 Aten, 9 Apollo, and 4 Amor type asteroids were detected by automated software and discriminated by their angular rates from the rest of the detected asteroids in near-real time by the observer. The average of about 1.5 earth-approaching asteroids per month is comparable to the total number found by all other observatories combined. One other Apollo type asteroid was detected by the observer as a long trailed image. The positions of this last object were measured and the object was tracked by the observer in real time. This object was determined to be a 5-10 meter diameter object which passed within 170,000 kilometers of earth. Of the 14 automatically detected earth-approaching asteroids, 10 have been found at distances in excess of 0.5 AU from earth. An average of more than 2000 asteroids are detected each month. Positions, angular rates, and brightnesses are determined for each of these asteroids in real-time.

    Description: The shadow-hiding models for the opposition effect and negative polarization of atmosphereless solar system bodies do not explain some experimental findings, such as the enhancing opposition effect and negative polarization with decreasing particle size down to wavelength scales. The enhancement for laboratory photometric and polarimetric data on artificial glass samples with different particle size is shown. These results are in agreement with the so-called coherent backscattering or interference mechanism proposed for the interpretation of the opposition effect and negative polarization. Two different approaches for describing the opposition effect and negative polarization produced by the shadow-interference mechanism were developed. One is based on exact electromagnetic solutions for simple scattering systems that include dipole-dipole and dipole-surface coupling; The other is based on a point-scatterer approximation characterized by model photometric and polarimetric phase functions, and the mutual shadowing effect is derived using virtual volumes associated with the point-scatterers. Both approaches yield qualitatively similar results, although neither is entirely satisfactory. We regard them as prototypes for a future unified model of shadowing and coherent backscattering. The sharp opposition effect of 44 Nysa and the asteroid albedo-polarization rule are here explained using the point-scatterer approach.

    Description: Long-slit spectra of comets Halley, Wilson and Nishikawa-Takamizawa-Tago were obtained with the 3.9 meter Anglo-Australian Telescope. Spectra of comets Halley and Wilson were obtained with the IPCS at a spectral resolution of 0.5 A and a spatial resolution of 10(exp 3) km. Spectra of comets Wilson and Nishikawa-Takamizawa-Tago were obtained with a CCD at a spectral resolution of 1.5 A and a spatial resolution of approximately 3 x 10(exp 3) km. Surface brightness profiles for NH2 were extracted from the long-slit spectra of each comet. The observed surface brightness profiles extend along the slit to approximately 6 x 10(exp 4) km from the nucleus in both sunward and tailward directions. By comparing surface distribution calculated from an appropriate coma model with observed surface brightness distributions, the photodissociation timescale of the parent molecule of NH2 can be inferred. The observed NH2 surface brightness profiles in all three comets compares well with a surface brightness profile calculated using the vectorial model, an NH3 photodissociation timescale of 7 x 10(exp 3) seconds, and an NH2 photodissociation timescale of 34,000 seconds.

Cometary activity at large heliocentric distances and mantle evolution are not yet fully understood.     Description: This paper reports the observations of 951 Gaspra carried out at the European Southern Observatory (La Silla, Chile) during the 1991 apparition, using the DLR CCD Camera equipped with a spare set of the Galileo SSI filters.     Description: Since 1989, we have been conducting a research program devoted to the study of the Trojans and outer belt asteroids (Hilda and Cybele groups), in order to characterize their rotational properties and shapes. As an outcome of several observational campaigns, we determined rotational periods and lightcurve amplitudes for 23 distant asteroids, using both CCD and photoelectric photometry. In this paper, we compare the rotational properties of main belt asteroids and Trojans, based on the preliminary results of this survey.

    Description: Theoretical O IV electron density sensitive emission line ratios, determined using electron impact excitation rates calculated with the R-matrix code, are presented for R(sub 1) = I(1407.4 A)/I(1401.2 A), R(sub 2) = I(1404.8 A)/I(1401.2A), R(sub 3) = I(1399.8 A)/(1401.2 A), and R(sub 4) = I(1397.2 A)/I(1401.2 A). The observed values of R(sub 1)-R(sub 4), measured from high resolution spectra obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite, lead to electron densities that are compatible, and which are also in good agreement with those deduced from line ratios in other species. This provides observational support for the accuracy of the atomic data adopted in the present calculations.

    Description: A sample of 45 quasars observed by the Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC) on the Einstein satellite is used to re-examine the relationship between the soft (0.2-3.5 keV) X-ray energy index and radio-loudness. We found the following: (1) the tendency for radio-loud quasars to have systematically flatter X-ray slopes than radio-quiet quasars (RQQ's) is confirmed with the soft X-ray excess having negligible effect; (2) there is a tendency for the flatness of the X-ray slope to correlate with radio core-dominance for radio-loud quasars, suggesting that a component of the X-ray emission is relativistically beamed; (3) for the RQQ's the soft X-ray slopes, with a mean of approximately 1.0, are consistent with the slopes found at higher energies (2-10 keV) although steeper than those observed for Seyfert 1 galaxies (also 2-10 keV) where the reflection model gives a good fit to the data; (4) the correlation of FeII emission line strength with X-ray energy index is confirmed for radio-quiet quasars using a subset of 18 quasars. The radio-loud quasars show no evidence for a correlation. This relation suggests a connection between the ionizing continuum and the line emission from the broad emission line region (BELR) of radio-quiet quasars, but in the opposite sense to that predicted by current photoionization models; and (5) the correlations of X-ray slope with radio core dominance and FeII equivalent width within the radio-loud and radio-quiet sub-classes respectively imply that the observed wide range of X-ray spectral slopes is real rather than due to the large measuring uncertainties for individual objects.

    Description: Coplanar, prograde three-body systems (TBS) are discussed, emphasizing the specification of general criteria for determining whether such systems are dynamically stable. It is shown that the Graziani-Black (1981) criteria provide a quantitatively accurate characterization of the onset of dynamic instability for values of the dimensionless mass ranging from one millionth to one million. Harrington's (1977) general criterion and the Graziani-Black criterion are compared with results from analytic work that spans a 12-orders-of-magnitude variation in the mass ratios of the TBS components. Comparison of the Graziani-Black criteria with data for eight well-studied triple-star systems indicates that the observed lower limit for the ratio of periastron distance of the tertiary orbit to the semimajor axis of the binary orbit is due to dynamical instability rather than to cosmogonic processes.

    Description: Observations of 1478 Abell clusters of galaxies with the NRAO 91-m telescope at 1400 MHz are reported. The measured beam shape was deconvolved from the measured source Gaussian fits in order to estimate the source size and position angle. All detected sources within 0.5 corrected Abell cluster radii are listed, including the cluster number, richness class, distance class, magnitude of the tenth brightest galaxy, redshift estimate, corrected cluster radius in arcmin, right ascension and error, declination and error, total flux density and error, and angular structure for each source.

    Description: The IUE satellite has undertaken UV observations of the proto-planetary nebulae V1016 Cyg, HM Sge, and HBV 475, yielding emission line fluxes, line ratios, line profiles, electron densities, and distances from these objects. While levels of increasing excitation and ionization as a function of time are shown by the data for the first two nebulae, the trend for HBV 475 is found to lead in the opposite direction. The formation of a shell is suggested by dramatic changes in the HM Sge UV line profiles over the last four years, including the disappearance of W-R features and the incipient splitting of the semi-forbidden C III 1909 A line. An additional IUE search for UV variability in the planetary nebulae IC 4997 and NGC 6905 has yielded emission line fluxes, line ratios and profiles, and central star temperatures, as well as stratification effects data for several ions in NGC 6905

    Description: A systematic approach to generate periodic orbits in the elliptic restricted problem of three bodies is introduced. The approach is based on (numerical) continuation from periodic orbits of the first and second kind in the circular restricted problem to periodic orbits in the elliptic restricted problem. Two families of periodic orbits of the elliptic restricted problem are found by this approach. The mass ratio of the primaries of these orbits is equal to that of the Sun-Jupiter system. The sidereal mean motions between the infinitesimal body and the smaller primary are in a 2:5 resonance, so as to approximate the Sun-Jupiter-Saturn system. The lineaar stabilities of these periodic orbits are studied as functions of the eccentricities of the primaries and of the infinitesimal body. The results show that both stable and unstable periodic orbits exist in the elliptic restricted problem that are close to the actual Sun-Jupiter-Saturn system. However, the periodic orbit closest to the actual Sun-Jupiter-Saturn system is (linearly) stable.

    Description: A unique design has been developed whereby a compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) and a compound elliptical concentrator (CEC) are joined at their throats. The CPC serves as the field-defining optics, in that it accepts up to a certain maximum acceptance angle and then concentrates this accepted energy at its throat. Energy incident from angles greater than the acceptance angle is rejected. The CEC takes the energy concentrated at the CPC throat and then redirects this energy into a finite-sized pupil a given distance away. The considered design will be used as the sky input horn for a cryogenic far-infrared polarizing interferometer to be flown on NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer satellite. The interferometer will operate at 2 K and measure the 3-K cosmic background radiation of the universe in the 100-micrometer-1-cm spectral range.

    Description: Nearly simultaneous observations are reported of P-alpha, H-alpha, and H-beta emission from 18 Seyfert galaxies and of Ly-alpha from eight of these galaxies. In many cases, P-alpha is stronger relative to the Balmer lines than is predicted by recombination calculations; reddening appears to be required. Dispersion in the P-alpha/H-alpha/H-beta ratios orthogonal to the reddening track indicates that high densities or optical depths also affect the line flux ratios. Several galaxies, notably NGC 1275, have very low P-alpha/H-alpha ratios. High densities, large optical depths, and reddening probably all contribute to the low observed Ly-alpha/H-beta ratios.

    Description: Since extreme Population I dominates three rocketborne telescope UV images of the Sc I galaxy NGC 5457, the delineation of the spiral structure is sharper than that of ground photographs. The UV pictures, in which the H II regions appear as reflection nebulae and illumine the nearby dust, reveal faint arms which, although correlated with the 21 cm H I radiograph, are only marginally detectable on deep visual photographs. The surface brightness of the arms is explainable in terms of UV light scattering off dust from hot stars and bright H II regions, in which case the dust would have extinction properties and a dust-to-gas ratio similar to that in the solar neighborhood and would in addition suggest that the NGC 5457 outer arm metal content is similar to that of the galaxy.

    Description: A number of X-ray sources were observed with the Naval Research Laboratory hard X-ray observatory during balloon flights on 1976 May 11 and 1977 November 24. The primary objective of the observations was to characterize the temporal and spectral behavior of the sources in the energy range from 20 to 250 keV. Special emphasis was placed on the determination of spectrum versus phase for periodic sources and on the search for spectral features such as the reported 60 keV line in the X-ray spectrum of Her X-1. Results of the observations include: evidence for possible phase-dependent spectral variations in the emission from GX 1+4; flaring in the emission from GX 301-2; detection of unmodulated X-ray emission up to approximately 35 keV from GX 304-1; and an unexpectedly hard spectrum above 20 keV from Cyg X-2.

    Description: The previously reported variability by a factor of two in less than a day is confirmed for the newly discovered BL Lac object PKS 2155-304, by means of the HEAO 1 A-2 experiment's medium- and high-energy detectors. An interpretation of the overall spectrum from radio through X-rays in terms of a synchrotron self-Compton model yields a good description of the data if relativistic beaming is allowed for. The presence of jets is inferred without their direct observation through consideration of the spectrum, combined with an estimate of the size of the source.
