Notes: The analysis of ultraviolet-absorbing constituents in urine was undertaken by anion-exchange and reversed-phase liquid chromatography. A newly developed anion exchanger (TSK-IEX540 DEAE) was used for ion-exchange mode liquid chromatography and its high polarity and physical strength greatly reduced the analysis time. Up to 80 peaks were resolved within 30 min. Hydrophobicity values were used to predict the retention times of acids in reversed-phase mode liquid chromatography.

Notes: The C1 -C6 fatty acids present in various types of heterogeneous animal wastes were isolated by steam distillation and determined as benzyl esters by high resolution gas chromatography. Glass capillary columns, deactivated with barium carbonate and coated with UCON HB 5100, allowed the analysis of benzyl formate, acetate, propionate, isobutyrate, butyrate, isovalerate, valerate, and caproate in less than 20 minutes. Recovery tests, performed on more than 50 different samples, indicated a benzylation yield and an overall efficiency higher than 99%, with a standard deviation of 2.6% (C5) to 6.0% (C1). The absolute detection limit ranged from 0.3 picomole (caproic acid) to 1.0 picomole (formic acid).

Notes: An integrated gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (GC/FT-IR) system developed for the analysis of environmental pollutants is described. The versatility of the system allows the utilization of many different techniques of sample introduction and manipulation during analysis. The sample can be introduced by direct injection or thermal desorption from an adsorbent cartridge, and can then be separated on one of two capillary columns and detected by FT-IR or an FID. Cold traps and collection cartridges incorporated in the system permit recovery and additional fractionation of samples. Recovered sample and sample fractions can then be re-analyzed by GC/FT-IR or subsequently analyzed by GC/MS or other methods.

Notes: A novel fused silica capillary GC/MS direct coupling is described which ensures quantitative transfer of sample from the point of injection to the ion source of a mass spectrometer without contacting any surfaces other than the column wall. This device permits GC analysis of highly labile substances. Aflatoxin B1, previously considered unassayable by GC, can now be determined by GC/MS.

Notes: Direct in situ determination of PGE1 in dioxane/water (1:1) at concentrations between 50 μg/ml and 1 mg/ml is described. HPTLC of PGE1 was carried out on HPTLC Kieselgel 60 o.F. plates; application (200 nl) was with a Nano-Appllcator and ethyl acetate/formic acid (400:5, v/v) served as mobile phase. The spots were located by dipping the plates into a 3% cupric acetate solution in 15% aqueous phosphoric acid, followed by heating at 120°C for 15 min. The plates were then evaluated directly at λ = 345 nm by chromatogram spectrometry. The coefficient of variation is 3.6%.

Notes: Two glass capillary gas chromatographic systems were equipped with inert effluent splitters which allowed simultaneous data acquisition using nonspecific and element-specific detectors. Simultaneous detection was achieved using the nonspecific flame ionization detector (FID) and the Hall® electrolytic conductivity detector (HECD) operated in either the sulfur-or the nitrogen-specific mode. Typical application of the simultaneous detection system as applied to analysis of petroleum residues is briefly described. The Hall electrolytic conductivity detector can be made element specific for halogen-, sulfur-, or nitrogen-containing compounds. Simultaneous detection enhances the information yield from a single sample injection and proves to be a powerful complementary technique when used with computerized gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

Notes: The measure of the distribution of a mixture of substances in TLC with a binary mobile phase is expressed as ΔRM1,2i,j which represents the difference between the RM values of substances i and j on use of the binary solvent 1 + 2 as the mobile phase. The possibility of determining its maximum value at an optimum composition of the binary mobile phase is demonstrated in this paper. This value can calculated from experimental and theoretical functions RM1,2 = f(Φ1) of substance i and j. More simply, ΔRM1,2i,j can be calculated theoretically from easily measurable adsorption parameters of excess adsorption isotherms and from chromatographic parameters obtained for pure solvents. The ΔRM1,2i,j value calculated theoretically can be utilized in a pilot technique for determination of the optimum composition of the mobile phase in gradient liquid chromatography.

Notes: Discrimination may occur when injecting samples onto gas chromatography capillary columns, whereby peak areas for higher boiling point compounds are smaller than they should be compared to lower boiling compounds. This problem is most important in quantitative work on solutes having a wide range of volatility. An all-glass inlet system was used. Injections were made with a 10-μl syringe onto a column without and injection point heater and with the column oven about 20°C below the boiling point of the solvent used for the solutes. Discrimination did not occur in a range of C12 to C36 n-alkanes.

Notes: The use of gradient elution in RP-HPLC is increasing. Aqueous buffers, such as phosphate at pH 1.7, with acetonitrile as the organic modifier are particularly advantageous as eluents with linear elution strength (LES). In the isocratic mode, under the experimental conditions used, fairly good linearity exists between logk' and xB (xBº is the volume ratio of the organic modifier, i.e. acetonitrile) with a correlation coefficient of 0.9995. The relationship between isocratic and gradient elution parameters, such as xB, xBº (starting composition in gradient elution), m (slope of the linear gradient), is transparent and the parameters of interest can be predicted fairly accurately using simple equations. The proposed system could be used in elaboration of a general retention index system for organic molecules in RP-HPLC.

Notes: This paper describes the screening for metabolites of butoprozine, a new anti-anginal drug, in dog bile by means of reverse-phase HPLC. Although it does involve a simple clean-up step to remove a substantial amount of endogenous bile compounds, this screening method nevertheless avoids extraction of metabolites and thus allows all metabolites to be introduced into the chromatographic system. A single run of 100 minutes from 100% water to 100% methanol in a linear gradient effects adequate separation of the great majority of metabolites without interference from remaining endogenous compounds. Two methods of differentiating between metabolite peaks and endogenous peaks have been worked out. The first one makes use of 14C-labeled butoprozine by measuring the amount of radioactivity in the column effluent while simultaneously recording the UV absorbance. The second method compares continuous gradient chromatograms of bile recorded before and after butoprozine administration under very similar conditions. The latter method can be applied to both radioactive and non-radioactive materials.

Notes: A method is described for the preparation of a Porous Layer Open Tubular (PLOT) fused silica column coated with submicron particles of aluminum oxide for the analysis of light hydrocarbons. The column is thermally stable and provides reproducible analytical data over a long period of time. The column can be operated at temperatures easily controlled by commercially available gas chromatographic apparatus. 1,3-Butadiene is retarded much more than its principal impurities: thus the polarity of aluminum oxide is extremely useful for butadiene analysis because none of the contaminants is obscured by the butadiene peak. The analysis of the 16 most common C1-C4 hydrocarbons is achieved within 5 min at 60°C with helium as the carrier gas. Conditioning of the carrier gas with water vapor from CuSO4.5H2O to decrease the activity of the aluminum oxide is described. Some applications of a 30 m × 0.32 mm aluminum oxide PLOT column are given.

Notes: Focused cryogenic trapping has been used to maximize the high resolution capabilities of fused silica capillary columns during dynamic headspace and pyrolytic polymer analyses. Mass spectrometric detection with data system recording/processing provide sensitive, selective, and rapid results. The techniques described herein demonstrate the power of both dynamic headspace and pyrolytic analyses for troubleshooting applications with complex industrial polymer products.

Notes: A modified clean-up of polynuclear aromatic (PNA) hydrocarbons on XAD-2 is described. n-Alkanes (C16—C28) are separated quantitatively from the PNA hydrocarbons and are eluted in one fraction. The distribution of 17 PNA hydrocarbons and four of their alkyl derivatives, two S-heterocyclic compounds and two azaarenes between the different fractions is reported. Azaarenes containing three rings are separated from PNA hydrocarbons and S-heterocyclic compounds. Whisker-walled open tubular columns coated with OV-215 and OV-25 were used in the separation of isomeric azaarenes and in PNA hydrocarbon profile analysis, respectively. The preparation of such columns is described in detail. Rinsing of capillary columns with cold, concentrated HCI after whisker growth removes much larger amounts of boron and sodium than subsequent leaching with HCI at 180°C. Whisker-walled open tubular columns are successfully applied to the characterization of isomeric benzofluoranthenes and other PNA hydrocarbons isolated from air particulate matter.

Notes: In on-column or in splitless injection with recondensation of the solvent, the length of the flooded zone in the column inlet depends primarily on the wettability of the internal wall of the inlet. For columns with a coated inlet this explains why peak distortion due to band broadening in space by a certain sample volume is pronounced in one case and hardly observable in another. Glass or fused silica capillaries silylated with diphenyltetramethyldisilazane were found to give optimal retention gaps. They combine thorough and thermostable deactivation with good wettability and low retention power. On the other hand it is very easy to deactivate fused silica capillaries with Carbowax. The resulting retention gaps are suitable for a wide range of applications and are particularly attractive for the analysis of dirty samples which require frequent replacement of the inlet.

Notes: Large sample volume on-column injection (up to 250 μL) of n-pentane solutions of halogenated hydrocarbons has been employed for the direct measurement of both low-boiling and high-boiling compounds in what is essentially a single run. Two-bonded phase, fused-silica capillary columns are joined in series, through which the low-boiling compounds are first chromatographed and detected with an electron capture detector. High-boiling compounds are then trapped in a section joining the two columns, and subsequently chromatographed in the second column, using the same detector. This procedure permits analysis at the ppt level.

Notes: An analytical procedure is described for the fractionation of organic compounds present in environmental samples and the determination of nitro polyaromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs). Both low and high resolution liquid chromatography are employed for the prefractionation of the soluble organic fraction (SOF) extracted from particulate matter or gaseous pollutants collected on adsorption traps. High resolution gas chromatography is used to analyze four fractions containing alkanes, PAHs, nitro-PAHs, and other polar PAHs. Nitrogen-containing species are separated by GC and detected specifically using an alkali flame (NPD) detector. Flame ionization (FID) detection, GC-MS of positive ions, and negative ion chemical ionization MS of the whole fraction is used for the identification and quantitation of the various components. The composition of SOF extracted from particulate matter emitted from diesel exhausts is elucidated and a large number of nitro-PAHs identified by the combination of the various techniques.

Notes: As an alternative to acid pretreated UCON and FFAP capillaries for the analysis of wide-boiling free fatty acid mixtures, OV-1 : FFAP phase mixtures were used on high-temperature silylated inert glass capillary columns. The HETP-carrier gas velocity curves, peak asymmetry factors, coating efficiency, gas phase and stationary phase contributions to the mass transfer resistance were determined for various OV-1 : FFAP ratios. Mixed-phase capillaries showed optimum performance at a 2 : 1 OV-1 : FFAP ratio. The thermal and long-term stability of OV-1-stabilized FFAP columns surpassed those of the UCON and pure FFAP reference column used.

Notes: Since positional isomers of several nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAH) contain widely different mutagenic properties, methods for separating the isomers were investigated. High performance liquid chromatography with dichloromethane in hexane on silica gave the best resolution for the majority of the compounds. A few groups of isomers were better resolved with other modifiers or with reversed phases. Of the reversed phase systems, methanol-water gave better resolution than acetonitrile-water. With dichloromethane/hexane on silica, the retention was found to depend on the presence of a bay nitro group (first), the number of H atoms peri to the nitro group (second), and the length/breadth ratio of the molecule (third).Front electron density calculations were combined with the structure-retention relations in making tentative structure assignments of minor isomers of nitro-PAH.

Notes: The original plate model of chromatography is extended to the sorption process occurring at the column inlet and the desorption process at the column exit. At the column inlet it is shown that sufficiently wide feed bands undergo no change in concentration but a fall in band width, i.e., the volume of mobile phase occupied by the solute band is reduced. The reduction factor is (1 + k) where k is the mass distribution ratio (capacity factor). Narrower bands suffer partial reduction in both band width and concentration. On desorption at the outlet, however, the change is always in band width and not concentration. A perfect detector registers the true concentration-time profile of the band in the column if the solute mass fraction in the stationary phase is below 10-3 at the column outlet. The risks of stripping the stationary phase at high solute concentrations in analytical and preparative or production gas chromatography are compared.

Notes: This article describes a method that assists in structure determination of cyclic sulfides mixtures by GC/MS. The method involves the use of a gas-phase hydrodesulfurization microreactor (AP-56 catalyst, reaction temperture 300-315°C, hydrogen as a carrier and reagent gas) located between the capillary column (OV-17) and the mass spectrometer. The presence of a microreactor in such a position does not essentially affect the chromatographic separation achieved by using the capillary column. Combined analysis of the mass spectra registered for the original sulfides and the hydrodesulfurization products permits the structure determination of each effluent to be made more reliably. This is illustrated by the investigation of a reaction mixture containing the structural and geometric isomers of methyl-substituted thiabicyclononanes.

Notes: The investigation considers the geometrical size effect for heat-treated 37 Cr 4 steel specimens in the case of one-level and multi-level fatigue tests. It was shown that the ratio Notch Factor/SCF of geometrically similar specimens increases asymptotically with the notch radius, tending to a value less than 1. The formula of Stieler for the ratio SCF/Notch Factor do not describe correctly the decrease of the fatigue limit with specimen diameter. A more exact description of the size effect is obtained with the aid of a two-parameter formula, which takes into account the support effect of the cyclic strain hardening and of the stress gradient. An effect of specimen size on fatigue life was also investigated in the case of multi-level tests. It seems that this effect is associated with a smaller diameter interval than the effect of size on the fatigue limit. This is connected with the higher plastification of the notched area in programme tests with maximum stress much higher than the fatigue limit. The programme fatigue life and the damage sum were considerably larger for the smaller (d = 8.9 mm) than for the larger (d = 22.26 mm) specimens, but further increase of the specimen diameter seems to have a slight effect.

Description / Table of Contents: Fracture Toughness Determination of Alumina and Cemented Carbide with Different Testing MethodsFracture toughness of a sintered alumina and two tungsten carbidecobalt materials was determined using four-point-bend specimens with straight through and chevron notches and with the short rod specimen. With the specimens with a straight through notch a lower KIc was measured for Al2O3 and a higher for WC-Co compared to the chevron-notched specimens. This behavior was explained by the different shapes of the crack growth resistance curves and the different critical notch radii. For Al2O3 a steeply rising crack growth resistance curve was measured in a controlled fracture test, for WC-Co a flatter curve was obtained. The effect of the shape of the crack growth resistance curve and of notch width on the evaluated toughness is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Shrinking and Swelling Properties of Chemically Cured Resin Mortars for Chemical Resistant LiningsIn the field of acid-proof construction chemically cured mortars, especially those based on phenolic, furan, epoxy or unsaturated polyester resins are used to apply linings on floors or in vessels. Sometimes these resin mortars are used as a troweling compound for monolithic floors, more often however as a bedding and pointing material for ceramic tiles or special shaped bricks. Because of the good adherence to the supporting construction to be protected, variations in dimension of the mortar as an effect of shrinkage or swelling cause stresses, which can exceed the strength of these linings and then could cause damage to the integrity of the installation. Methods for measuring the effective, i.e. stress generating dimensional changes in resin mortars were investigated for a variety of conditions, and testing equipment for determining the stresses generating in these mortars are developed. The results are represented graphically. The evaluation is done with respect to the possible effects of the behavior of the mortars in installed brick linings and floor coverings.

Description / Table of Contents: Formation of Fracture Surfaces and Adhesion Mechanisms of Titanium Steel Explosive BondingsInvestigations on adhesion of the model system steel-titanium explosive platings have been carried out under the condition of an uniaxial tensile test. A bond model of explosive plating will be proposed and discusses by means of SEM-analysis of the fracture surfaces. Hence it follows, that in the range of the slow collision velocity, the bond mechanism is identical with that obtained by friction welding processes. At medium collision velocity a formation of thin hydrodynamic metal films with lubricating effects and slight adhesion in the interface region takes place. Extreme large collision velocity rate cause the bond due to fusion welding processes.
