    Beschreibung: Metalliferous minerals play a central role in the global economy. They will continue to provide the raw materials we need for industrial processes. Significant challenges will likely emerge if the climate-driven green and low-carbon development transition of metalliferous mineral exploitation is not managed responsibly and sustainably. Green low-carbon technology is vital to promote the development of metalliferous mineral resources shifting from extensive and destructive mining to clean and energy-saving mining in future decades. Global mining scientists and engineers have conducted a lot of research in related fields, such as green mining, ecological mining, energy-saving mining, and mining solid waste recycling, and have achieved a great deal of innovative progress and achievements. This Special Issue intends to collect the latest developments in the green low-carbon mining field, written by well-known researchers who have contributed to the innovation of new technologies, process optimization methods, or energy-saving techniques in metalliferous minerals development.

    Beschreibung: The art of printing with movable type made its appearance in Perugia -then as now, the heart of Italy- in 1471, when the city was under the sway of Braccio Baglioni. Perugia was home to an important university which had been attracting students from all over Europe for more than a century. They found hospitality in two colleges, of which the ‘Sapienza Vecchia’, in particular, was accustomed to accommodating students from abroad. The colleges were themselves instrumental in assisting the work of the earliest printers, all of them foreigners; their enterprise flourished for about fifteen years before strong competition from larger printing centres, notably Venice, took control of the Perugian book market. A second phase in local book production started at the turn of the century under the aegis of two major players, the Cartolari family and Bianchino dal Leone. The history of the book in Perugia is characterized by a quality and originality which is not reflected in the modest quantities produced there, and the major bibliographers have always taken an interest in it. All that and more can be found in this book, the outcome of lengthy research based on detailed analysis of all known editions and archival documents, including a number of new discoveries.

    Beschreibung: Ce volume est le quatrième d’une série d’ouvrages portant sur « Statuts, écritures et pratiques sociales dans les sociétés de la Méditerranée occidentale à la fin du Moyen Âge (XIIe-XVe siècle) », visant à étudier les statuts communaux dans une optique d’histoire sociale, non pas comme une source « normative » mais comme une source de la pratique, de leur matérialité et de leur forme d’écriture aux pratiques sociales en passant par les conditions de leur production et de conservation, leur inscription dans un paysage documentaire communal, leur structure et leur contenu. Ce dernier ouvrage s’intéresse aux statuts « vus de l’extérieur » c’est-à-dire au rapport entre le texte statutaire et sa mise en jeu dans des pratiques sociales concrètes, mais aussi à la manière dont les acteurs médiévaux se posent la question de l’usage de la norme, aux divers moments documentaires où ils font référence ou allèguent explicitement les statuts dans leurs pratiques. Il n’est donc question de statuts qu’à travers d’autres documents, qu’ils fassent partie du paysage documentaire communal (délibérations communales, registres de justice, registres de compte, criées, épigraphie, iconographie, etc.) ou qu’ils soient élaborés en marge des écrits de gouvernement (registres notariés, testaments, récits de miracles, procès de canonisation, sources narratives, chroniques, etc.). Le but est de repérer, d’analyser et d’étudier la manière dont les normes statutaires se sont diffusées – ou pas –, ont été appliquées – ou pas – dans les pratiques politiques, économiques et sociales de la commune : comment ont-elles été validées, reproduites, conservées, diffusées ? C’est l’occasion de mesurer la force pratique des statuts, leurs effets dans la vie quotidienne du gouvernement et des acteurs sociaux, de prouver ainsi la pertinence de la confrontation entre divers éléments textuels produits par la commune pour élaborer une histoire des pratiques sociales à partir des pratiques d’écriture dans les sociétés de la Méditerranée occidentale à la fin du Moyen Âge (XIIe-XVe siècle).

Using a combination of experimental digital, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the volume casts new light on urban life at the level of the neighbourhood and considers the differences in economy, society and sociability which existed in different areas of a vibrant premodern city. It focuses on the dynamism and mobility that shaped city life, integrating the experiences of London’s poor and migrant communities and how they found their place within urban life. It describes how people found themselves marginalized in the city, and the strategies they would employ to mitigate that precarious position.

    Beschreibung: This Special Issue was intended as a forum to advance research and apply machine-learning and data-mining methods to facilitate the development of modern electric power systems, grids and devices, and smart grids and protection devices, as well as to develop tools for more accurate and efficient power system analysis. Conventional signal processing is no longer adequate to extract all the relevant information from distorted signals through filtering, estimation, and detection to facilitate decision-making and control actions. Machine learning algorithms, optimization techniques and efficient numerical algorithms, distributed signal processing, machine learning, data-mining statistical signal detection, and estimation may help to solve contemporary challenges in modern power systems. The increased use of digital information and control technology can improve the grid’s reliability, security, and efficiency; the dynamic optimization of grid operations; demand response; the incorporation of demand-side resources and integration of energy-efficient resources; distribution automation; and the integration of smart appliances and consumer devices. Signal processing offers the tools needed to convert measurement data to information, and to transform information into actionable intelligence.     Beschreibung: This book is motivated by our passion to compile recent research on antimicrobial surfaces. We aimed to assemble research papers on the preparation of new materials, antimicrobial testing using different pathogens (bacteria, fungi, and viruses), and the relationship between the coating nanostructure and its reactivity towards the studied pathogen(s). We believe that a good antimicrobial coating should by characterized by (i) a fast activity towards the pathogen, (ii) sustainable activity based on the stability of the coating, and (iii) the lowest possible toxicity for humans and reduced risks for the environment. Striking a compromise between these different challenges is difficult and requires more research.

    Beschreibung: Third millennium engineering address new challenges in materials sciences and engineering. In particular, the advances in materials engineering combined with the advances in data acquisition, processing and mining as well as artificial intelligence allow for new ways of thinking in designing new materials and products. Additionally, this gives rise to new paradigms in bridging raw material data and processing to the induced properties and performance. This present topical issue is a compilation of contributions on novel ideas and concepts, addressing several key challenges using data and artificial intelligence, such as:- proposing new techniques for data generation and data mining;- proposing new techniques for visualizing, classifying, modeling, extracting knowledge, explaining and certifying data and data-driven models;- processing data to create data-driven models from scratch when other models are absent, too complex or too poor for making valuable predictions;- processing data to enhance existing physic-based models to improve the quality of the prediction capabilities and, at the same time, to enable data to be smarter; and- processing data to create data-driven enrichment of existing models when physics-based models exhibit limits within a hybrid paradigm.

    Beschreibung: Food waste is becoming an important and growing concern at both local and global levels. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), one-third of all food production is wasted globally, and in particular, 1.3 billion tons of food produced for human consumption is wasted per year, representing an economic loss of EUR 800 billion. The main foods wasted are represented by vegetables, fruits, meat, and fish. Considering the high availability and the composition of food waste, there is an increasing interest in their bio-valorization.     Beschreibung: This book, consisting of 21 articles, including three review papers, written by research groups of experts in the field, considers recent research on reinforced polymer composites. Most of them relate to the fiber-reinforced polymer composites, which are a real hot topic in the field. Depending on the reinforcing fiber nature, such composites are divided into synthetic and natural fiber-reinforced ones. Synthetic fibers, such as carbon, glass, or basalt, provide more stiffness, while natural fibers, such as jute, flax, bamboo, kenaf, and others, are inexpensive and biodegradable, making them environmentally friendly. To acquire the benefits of design flexibility and recycling possibilities, natural reinforcers can be hybridized with small amounts of synthetic fibers to make them more desirable for technical applications. Elaborated composites have great potential as structural materials in automotive, marine and aerospace application, as fire resistant concrete, in bridge systems, as mechanical gear pair, as biomedical materials for dentistry and orthopedic application and tissue engineering, as well as functional materials such as proton-exchange membranes, biodegradable superabsorbent resins and polymer electrolytes.

    Beschreibung: Some terms, such as eco-friendly, circular economy and green technologies, have remained in our vocabulary, because the truth is that mankind is altering the planet to put its own subsistence at risk. Besides, for rationalization in the consumption of raw materials and energy, the recycling of waste through efficient and sustainable processes forms the backbone of the paradigm of a sustainable industry. One of the most relevant technologies for the new productive model is anaerobic digestion. Historically, anaerobic digestion has been developed in the field of urban wastes and wastewater treatments, but in the new challenge, its role is more relevant. Anaerobic digestion is a technologically mature biological treatment, which joins bioenergy production with the efficient removal of contaminants. This issue provides a specialized, but broad in scope, overview of the possibilities of the anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass (mainly forestry and agricultural wastes), which is expected to be a more promising substrate for the development of biorefineries. Its conversion to bioenergy through anaerobic digestion must solve some troubles: the complex lignocellulosic structure needs to be deconstructed by pretreatments and a co-substrate may need to be added to improve the biological process. Ten selected works advance this proposal into the future.

    Beschreibung: Aux xvie et xviie siècles, l’ordre européen était parfois menacé par des crises d’origine régionale. Ces désordres venaient des initiatives scandaleuses d’acteurs politiques habituellement peu présents sur la scène internationale (municipalités, institutions provinciales, seigneurs locaux). Pour résoudre des conflits internes, parfois contre leur propre souverain, ces acteurs n’hésitaient pas à appeler des puissances étrangères à leur secours, dans des logiques de solidarités politico-religieuses internationales. Les « affaires de Provence» (1580-1598) permettent de comprendre le fonctionnement de ce type de crises. Au plus fort des guerres de Religion en France, les catholiques de Provence appelèrent à leur secours le duc de Savoie, le grand-duc de Toscane, les papes et le roi d’Espagne. Parce que la Provence avait une position stratégique entre Barcelone et Gênes, d’autres puissances intervinrent à leur tour: l’Angleterre, l’Empire ottoman, le duché de Lorraine et la République de Venise. À partir d’une étude minutieuse des événements, ce livre mène une réflexion approfondie sur les défis stratégiques, intellectuels et rhétoriques d’une situation vécue à l’époque comme un désordre international, en raison de la marge de manœuvre subversive acquise par des acteurs ordinairement faibles.

    Beschreibung: Functional coatings are cost-effective means to protect substrates from wear, corrosion, erosion, tribocorrosion, high temperature and high pressure in extreme environmental conditions. These are primarily manufactured through metal/ceramic powder deposition in a subsequent layer by layer fashion on the substrate materials. In all cases, the functional coatings need to be reliable for the intended application. The emerging techniques in 3D printing/additive manufacturing can be utilized to develop high-performance functional coatings. These methods provide geometrical precision, flexibility in geometrical complexity, customization of the coating layers, and reduce the raw materials waste, keeping the manufacturing cost low while addressing many of the technical barriers of conventional coating methods. With the rapid development of cutting-edge value-added technologies in aerospace, nuclear, military, space, and energy industry, 3D printing/additive manufacturing techniques will be major advantages. Novel functional coatings and 3D printing/additive manufacturing techniques will be critical to value-added components in the future development of technologies. The book provide an overview of the recent development in coating manufacturing techniques and potential to use in high-end engineering applications.

    Beschreibung: Over the last two decades, the literature on political participation has flourished, reflecting the increasing use of diverse modes of citizen involvement. These include established modes of participation, such as voting, protests, mass demonstrations, and petition signing, but also newer modes specific to the online environment (ICT-related), participation in referendums, public consultations, or engagement in political deliberation. The importance and intensity of these modes is reflected both in the number of people getting involved and in the increasing number of policies that are subject to various modes of participation on a regular basis. There is extensive literature about how these modes of participation function, why people get involved, and the consequences of their participation. However, limited attention is paid to the relationship between political participation and the pursuit of sustainability at a local, regional, or central level. Existing studies indicate that citizen engagement can be a cost-effective method to characterize changes of local environments; however, not much is known beyond this process. This Special Issue aims to address this void in the literature and brings together contributions that analyze how participation can be associated with sustainability and local development in various settings. It explores the relationship between political participation and the management of their local environment. This Special Issue enhances the existing knowledge and understanding about how modes of participation can be reflected in stronger sustainability. The Special Issue provides the space for an academic debate that addresses issues such as climate change, resource allocation, or the pursuit of sustainability programs and policies. The contributions include a mix of single-case studies and comparative analyses across European countries.

    Beschreibung: Entre le XIIIe et le XVIe siècle, dans les régions de la Méditerranée occidentale, princes, grands seigneurs, prélats et hommes d’affaires ont aimé décorer richement l’intérieur de leurs demeures. Ils y ont fait entrer l’image, précurseurs d’une longue histoire des espaces domestiques. On redécouvre aujourd’hui, à la faveur de restaurations, le foisonnant décor des plafonds, plus rarement celui des murs. Ce sont des centaines, des milliers d’images inédites qui nous parviennent et révèlent un Moyen Âge profane presque inconnu. Parmi la luxuriance des corniches et moulures où s’enroulent des rubans ou s’épanouissent fleurs et feuillages, les planchettes glissées entre les solives ont reçu des peintures dont la variété thématique nous ouvre une nouvelle part de l’imaginaire de ces siècles. La rigueur du programme héraldique voisine avec un monde animal souvent fantastique, mais aussi domestique, familier, ou exotique. Ici et là, des saynètes montrent des personnages humains, au jeu, en fête, au travail (fort peu), ou au combat. Ici, la veine est raffinée, là, d’une truculence comique. Cet ouvrage parcourt, pour la première fois, toutes les régions méditerranéennes qui ont participé de ce goût pour les charpentes peintes, trace la chronologie de leur histoire, observe les traits communs de leur inspiration et fait ressortir les nuances : la Renaissance et l’Antique s’expriment en même temps que la drôlerie des fabliaux.

    Beschreibung: Adsorption is a well-established operation used for water decontamination and the remediation of industrial effluents. It is also recognized as a key technology for recovering substances of economic interest or those at risk of scarcity. The new sustainability paradigm of the circular economy and the current context of promoting the efficient use of natural resources, water and energy have been motivating the search for eco-friendly adsorbents for water and wastewater treatment and resource recovery. This Special Issue compiles 21 papers (17 research articles and 4 reviews), addressing the removal of heavy metals, toxic metalloids, precious metals and organics from aqueous solution, using a wide variety of adsorbents derived from natural and waste materials.

    Beschreibung: Jacques-Nicolas Billaud-Varenne (1756-1819) demeure un méconnu de l’historiographie révolutionnaire. En rééditant les Principes régénérateurs du systême social, opuscule publié en pluviôse an III (janvier-février 1795), peu de temps avant la déportation de l’auteur à Cayenne, on souhaite ici éclairer un moment essentiel dans l’élaboration de la « synthèse républicaine ». C’est aussi « une nouvelle manière d’écrire l’histoire de la Révolution française » (Michel Vovelle). Un retour critique au texte met en lumière, d’une part, l’acculturation d’un révolutionnaire de premier plan, d’autre part, les thèmes récurrents du discours jacobin. L’essai de Billaud-Varenne est, en effet, une expression du projet montagnard d’« institutions civiles ». Projet d’un lien social pour « mettre en action la morale » et « la donner pour base à la politique », espérance d’un nouvel espace public de réciprocité fraternelle où la citoyenneté compte au rang des droits naturels. Ainsi se dévoile une philosophie de la Révolution française qui n’est pas sans rapport avec la pensée allemande contemporaine de l’événement révolutionnaire.

    Beschreibung: Due to their lightweight and high specific strength, Mg-based alloys are considered as substitutes to their heavier counterparts in applications in which corrosion is non-relevant and weight saving is of importance. Furthermore, due to the biocompatibility of Mg, some alloys with controlled corrosion rates are used as degradable implant materials in the medical sector. The typical processing route of Mg parts incorporates a casting step and, subsequently, a thermo–mechanical treatment. In order to achieve the desired macroscopic properties and thus fulfill the service requirements, thorough knowledge of the relationship between the microstructure, the processing steps, and the resulting property profile is necessary. This Special Issue covers in situ and ex situ experimental and computational investigations of the behavior under thermo–mechanical load of Mg-based alloys utilizing modern characterization and simulation techniques. The papers cover investigations on the effect of rare earth additions on the mechanical properties of different Mg alloys, including the effect of long-period stacking-ordered (LPSO) structures, and the experimental and computational investigation of the effect of different processing routes

    Beschreibung: This book is intended to highlight why SCP policy design and evaluation needs to overcome conventional environmental policy framework. Emerging SCP policy design and evaluation do not involve focusing on individual products or behaviors or improving efficiency in management systems in relation to environmental sustainability; instead, they address more socio-economic systems and target collective efforts for transition. Effort has been made for this book/Special Issue to feature studies contributing to policy design and evaluation in this direction. It contains 11 papers covering challenges and opportunities for SCP policy design, application of foresight to policy design, evaluation of NDC potentials to facilitate sustainable lifestyles, comparative analysis of sustainable development criteria, sustainable lifestyle and education, subjective wellbeing and sustainable consumption, case studies on challenges and opportunities for sustainability transition at the local and community level, and three case studies on how to fill gaps between policy goals and environmental behavior at a city level in China, Vietnam, and Thailand. The papers in this book suggest that SCP policy design and evaluation need to pay more attention to social aspects of sustainability such as social infrastructure and well-being and socio-technical systems to ensure effective and just transition to sustainability.

    Beschreibung: Les relations entre les États-Unis et l’Unesco ont toujours été complexes comme le démontre l’étude des 20 premières années de celles-ci. Lors de la création de l’Unesco quelques Américains ont énormément travaillé pour que cette Institution spécialisée des Nations- Unis existe. Leur rôle et leur apport sont ici soigneusement mis en évidence. Or, les premières déceptions arrivent rapidement car, à tort, du côté de Washington, on espérait voir l’Organisation participer efficacement à la lutte contre le communisme. Néanmoins, à la fin des années 1950, l’Unesco connaît un regain de faveur auprès du gouvernement américain. Et si l’hégémonie financière américaine à l’Unesco n’a jamais fait de doute, sa domination politique est mise en cause dès les premières années. Les États-Unis vont quitter l’Unesco en 1984, quand la première génération d’Américains, fondateurs de l’Unesco et fidèles malgré les déceptions a, depuis longtemps, quitté la scène politique.     Beschreibung: Si l’histoire traditionnelle de l’hérésie au Moyen Âge s’est longtemps confondue avec celle des exclus de la société, l’approche récente se focalise davantage sur les diverses autorités qui, au coeur du pouvoir, élaborèrent la norme religieuse : l’hérésie n’existe que parce que l’orthodoxie en a d’abord décidé. Il reste que, loin de se présenter comme une essence immuable, elle s’impose tout au long du Moyen Âge comme un concept et une qualification d’une très grande plasticité. L’extension progressive du domaine de l’hérésie à de nombreuses formes de dissidence finit par lui assurer le statut d’un crime englobant. Cette enquête collective repose sur la conviction que c’est encore en se situant aux marges de l’hérésie, au contact d’activités répréhensibles voisines, telles que l’usure, la sorcellerie ou encore la rébellion politique, que l’on peut le mieux saisir les principes et les mécanismes de la fabrique de l’hérésie.

    Beschreibung: Qu’on l’appelle « D-Day », « Jour J », « 6 Juin » ou « Débarquement », nulle autre précision n’est nécessaire pour évoquer l’offensive alliée en Normandie en 1944, alors même que de nombreuses opérations militaires de ce type ont été menées au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et que le sort de l’Allemagne nazie s’est joué sur le front de l’Est. Quelles sont les raisons qui expliquent que cette bataille – une parmi tant d’autres qui ont émaillé les conflits du xxe siècle – a d’emblée revêtu une dimension historique pour les contemporains ? Pourquoi précisément cette opération militaire est-elle désormais régulièrement commémorée par autant de chefs d’État sous le regard des télévisions du monde entier ? Comment expliquer le statut si particulier acquis par cet événement au fil des décennies, jusqu’au projet d’inscription des plages du Débarquement au patrimoine de l’Unesco ? En revenant à la dramatisation des enjeux d’une bataille annoncée près de quatre années à l’avance, mais aussi aux ressorts politiques, idéologiques, économiques et culturels qui ont contribué à transcender l’événement en épopée, cet ouvrage s’interroge sur la quête d’identité de chacun des acteurs nationaux à travers l’évolution de leur mémoire. Ainsi peut-on mieux comprendre la surprenante transformation de l’épisode guerrier en symbole universel de paix et de liberté.

    Beschreibung: At the end of the Western Middle Ages, the new notions of the legitimacy of royal power and its exercise were made more visible by the presence of royal favourites whose figure should be reconsidered. The present study links the reproach of sexual misconduct as a political argument in medieval discourse to medieval ideas about royalty and government, opening new perspectives of a cultural history of politics in the Later Middle Ages.
    Beschreibung: Die politische Rolle des Favoriten und die Art seiner Beziehung zum König sind in der Forschung oft nicht klar gesehen worden, da in den Diskursen des frühen und späten Mittelalters die besondere Nähe zum Herrscher regelmäßig in der Sprache der Liebe und in Gesten der körperlichen Nähe und Intimität zum Ausdruck kam. So entstand der Eindruck, dass der König aus homosexueller Neigung seinem Günstling übermäßigen Einfluss gewährte – auf Kosten der Barone, die ebenfalls einen Anteil an der Macht beanspruchten. In dieser Studie wird die Figur des Favoriten neu betrachtet und in ihrer Bedeutung über den Einzelfall hinaus verständlich gemacht. Sie setzt den Vorwurf sexuellen Fehlverhaltens als politisches Argument in Bezug zur Entwicklung der Vorstellung von Königtum und Herrschaft und eröffnet so neue Perspektiven einer Kulturgeschichte des Politischen im Spätmittelalter.

Ainsi, l’impression est née que le roi, par inclination homosexuelle, accordait une influence excessive à son favori – aux dépens des barons, qui revendiquaient, eux aussi, une part du pouvoir.     Beschreibung: « Zone tribale du Nord-Yémen », « zone tribale de l’Ouest pakistanais », voilà bien des expressions qui reviennent dans l’actualité pour désigner des régions de confins farouchement réfractaires à l’imposition d’un nouvel ordre politique. Dès la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle, les États européens, emportés dans leur mouvement d’expansion outre-mer, vinrent buter, en périphérie, sur ce type d’espace en quelque sorte interstitiel des relations internationales contemporaines. Dans ces zones où les agents traditionnels de la vie diplomatique pénétraient peu, ou mal, une expertise particulière, celle du renseignement et des agences de sécurité, parut s’imposer. Lorsque la France coloniale s’implante en Syrie et au Liban, au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, elle doit précisément faire face à ce type de résistance, où se combinent turbulences tribales, désordres sociaux et effervescence identitaire. La lutte qui s’engage alors entre bandes armées locales d’une part, et Service des Renseignements de l’armée française de l’autre, dépasse, et de loin, le face-à-face purement martial, mais renvoie à un choc des violences, sociale et guerrière d’un côté, étatique et militaire de l’autre, dont il n’est pas sûr que la leçon ne vaille qu’au passé.

    Beschreibung: Pharmaceuticals represent an especially worrying class of micropollutants because they are biologically active. Thus, their occurrence in aquatic environments may cause undesirable effects in living organisms and, if present in water sources for human consumption, may constitute a public health issue. However, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which have not been designed for the removal of pharmaceuticals and cannot guarantee their full elimination, are considered hotspots for their dissemination in natural waters. In this context, the Special Issue (SI) entitled “Removal of Pharmaceuticals from Water: Conventional and Alternative Treatments” was launched to contribute to the assessment of the contemporary challenges and advances in the removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater. Papers published in the SI, which have been compiled in this book, approached the topic with either of the following different perspectives: (i) the fate and removal of pharmaceuticals by conventional treatments applied in existing WWTPs; or (ii) advanced and alternative green approaches to remove pharmaceuticals from water. Apart from the Editorial, papers published within this SI include two literature reviews and six experimental studies, all of them presenting unconventional approaches, original views, innovative research and/or novel methodologies. This compilation will definitely spark the attention of readers intrigued in the topic, and is useful for researchers in the field.

    Beschreibung: Mechanical and hydraulic soil properties are strongly affected by the degree of saturation, with important consequences for earthen embankments, soil–vegetation–atmosphere interactions, geoenvironmental applications, and risk mitigation. The presence of sloping ground surfaces is common. In slightly inclined natural slopes, susceptible to deep landslides, the unsaturated condition of shallow soil horizons affects deep pore water pressures and, therefore, global stability. The stability of steep mountains covered by shallow deposits is often guaranteed by a shear strength contribution related to the unsaturated condition. In this case, the degree of saturation plays a key role in determining which rainfall events can act as landslide triggers, consequently controlling the post-failure evolution. Partial saturation is the basic characteristic of soils used as construction materials of geo-structures such as levees, dikes, and dams. It governs the structure behavior during construction phases, in serviceability, and in extreme scenarios. Hoping to provide a bridge between theoretical research and practical applications, this Special Issue collects quality contributions related to natural and artificial slopes under unsaturated conditions, focusing on aspects such as: water retention and transport properties, mechanical behavior, advances in experimental methods, laboratory and in situ characterization, field monitoring, geotechnical and geophysical field tests, landslide investigation and prevention, the design and maintenance of engineered slopes, and the constitutive and numerical modeling of hydro-mechanical behavior.

    Beschreibung: En 1626, une première compagnie par actions est formée à l’initiative de Richelieu pour mener la colonisation des Petites Antilles et organiser le trafic transatlantique. Elle repose sur les associés, des proches du cardinal, qui en possèdent le capital et en assurent la direction. En 1635, elle est réorganisée afin de pouvoir satisfaire d’une façon plus efficace les objectifs qui lui ont été fixés par la monarchie, à savoir, conquérir et peupler des terres et favoriser le commerce. Elle prend alors le nom de Compagnie des îles de l’Amérique. Sous sa conduite, les Français déjà établis à Saint-Christophe s’installent à la Guadeloupe et à la Martinique et affichent des prétentions sur la Grenade, Sainte-Croix, Saint- Martin et Saint-Barthélemy. Plusieurs milliers de colons tentent l’aventure en franchissant l’océan à la quête d’un meilleur avenir et de richesses. Les terres sont exploitées pour satisfaire les besoins de la métropole. Quelques grands domaines s’appuyant sur une main-d’œuvre constituée d’esclaves africains développent de nouvelles productions comme le sucre et l’indigo. Mais la Compagnie est bientôt confrontée à de multiples difficultés qui remettent en cause son fonctionnement et ses finalités. Les tensions dans les îles et les faibles retombées de sa politique économique conduisent les associés à cesser progressivement leurs activités à partir de 1649. Sa fin pourtant ne signifie pas l’échec de la colonisation française des Petites Antilles. L’héritage qu’elle lègue va fructifier durant les décennies suivantes et donner naissance au premier empire colonial français.

From the intense political struggles around 1848 to the establishment of the Republic and beyond, the book describes the formation of a democratic opinion that is illuminated by trajectories of emblematic republicans and socialists such as Louis-Étienne Jousserandot and Jean-Paul Mazaroz.

    Beschreibung: Across Europe, the early medieval period saw the advent of new ways of cereal farming which fed the growth of towns, markets and populations, but also fuelled wealth disparities and the rise of lordship. These developments have sometimes been referred to as marking an ‘agricultural revolution’, yet the nature and timing of these critical changes remain subject to intense debate, despite more than a century of research. The papers in this volume demonstrate how the combined application of cutting-edge scientific analyses, along with new theoretical models and challenges to conventional understandings, can reveal trajectories of agricultural development which, while complementary overall, do not indicate a single period of change involving the extension of arable, the introduction of the mouldboard plough, and regular crop rotation. Rather, these phenomena become evident at different times and in different places across England throughout the period, and rarely in an unambiguously ‘progressive’ fashion. Presenting innovative bioarchaeological research from the ground-breaking Feeding Anglo-Saxon England project, along with fresh insights into ploughing technology, brewing, the nature of agricultural revolutions, and farming practices in Roman Britain and Carolingian Europe, this volume is a critical new contribution to environmental archaeology and medieval studies in England and beyond.

    Beschreibung: Aboutissement d’une exploration systématique de toutes les sources disponibles, tant latines qu’orientales, ce gros ouvrage constitue une somme encore inégalée sur l’histoire des croisades et du royaume latin de Jérusalem. L’édifice repose sur une étude attentive de la situation de l’Orient musulman et de l’Occident chrétien, à la fin du XIe siècle. Dans ce tableau viennent naturellement s’insérer la prédication et l’organisation de la Première Croisade. Pauvres et riches, piétons et chevaliers prennent la route de Jérusalem, conquièrent la Ville sainte, après "mainte souffrance, et y établissent le coeur d’un nouvel État progressivement conquis. Le réveil du djihad suscite les Deuxième et Troisième Croisades, inégalement fructueuses. À la fin du XIIe siècle, le redressement du monde latin conduit à l’avènement d’un second royaume, centré sur la ville d’Acre, mais réduit à un liseré côtier. Après les espoirs que font naître Frédéric II puis saint Louis, les Mamlûks prennent le dessus, le royaume se désagrège jusqu’à la catastrophe finale de 1291. La précision du récit événementiel laisse place à de larges échappées sur les institutions et la société des États latins, résultat de la première colonisation qu’ait établie l’Occident chrétien en terre étrangère. Tant par l’élégance de son écriture que par la richesse de l’information, l’oeuvre de Joshua Prawer reste un monument de granit dans l’historiographie de l’Orient latin.

    Thermochemical Conversion Processes for Solid Fuels and Renewable Energies (2022)

    Beschreibung: It is widely believed that a large proportion of greenhouse gas emissions originated anthropogenically from the use of fossil fuels with additional contributions coming from manufactured materials, deforestation, soil erosion, and agriculture (including livestock). The global society actively supports measures to create a flexible and low-carbon energy economy to attenuate climate change and its devastating environmental consequences. In this Special Issue, the recent advancements in the next-generation thermochemical conversion processes for solid fuels and renewable energies (e.g., the operational flexibility of co-combustion of biomass and lignite, integrated solar combined cycle power plants, and advanced gasification systems such as the sorption-enhanced gasification and the chemical looping gasification) were shown.

Fondées en 1929 par deux religieux dominicains dans le prolongement du succès de la revue La Vie Spirituelle, elles ont rapidement acquis, par leurs périodiques et par leurs livres, une réputation enviable dans l’aile marchante de l’Église de France : mouvement ecclésiologique (collection « Unam Sanctam » du père Congar) ; mouvement biblique (Bible dite de Jérusalem) ; mouvement patristique (collection « Sources chrétiennes ») ; mouvement liturgique (revue La Maison-Dieu) ; mouvement théologique (collection « Cogitatio Fidei »). Elles ont été ainsi un des vecteurs majeurs en France de l’aggiornamento conciliaire voulu par Jean XXIII. Mais leur histoire n’a pas été un long fleuve tranquille : les Éditions du Cerf ont traversé bien des orages du fait de leurs positions d’ouverture sur les grandes crises du xxe siècle : condamnation par Rome de l’Action française, guerre d’Espagne, Seconde Guerre mondiale, guerre froide ou guerre d’Algérie. C’est ce parcours mouvementé, conjuguant histoire générale et histoire religieuse, que retrace ce livre, rédigé de première main par un universitaire familier de tels événements, avec les archives des provinces dominicaines françaises. Il éclaire tout un pan de l’histoire du catholicisme en France au xxe siècle.

    Beschreibung: Ce livre est le résultat d’une enquête menée sur les archives les plus anciennes d’une institution originale et mal connue : la Pénitencerie apostolique. Né au tout début du XIIIe siècle dans le giron d’une papauté exerçant son pouvoir sur tout l’Occident latin, ce nouvel office fut d’abord chargé d’entendre en confession les pèlerins qui se rendaient à Rome pour demander l’absolution de leurs péchés. Puis il se vit mandaté pour répondre aux suppliques qui, chaque jour, étaient adressées au souverain pontife. L’enquête s’appuie donc sur les « formulaires » voués à recueillir, réordonner et abréger les milliers de lettres que la Pénitencerie expédiait en réponse aux suppliants. Véritables répertoires d’exemples, dans lesquels la forme et la norme étaient indissociables, ces manuels reflètent tous les cas de figure auxquels pouvait être confrontée la Pénitencerie : homicides, naissances illégitimes, mariages incestueux, faux et usage de faux, moines ayant fui leurs couvents, etc. À tous ces suppliants, le tribunal du pape avait la charge d’octroyer des dispenses, des licences ou des absolutions, parfois dans le secret du « for de la confession ». Situé au croisement d’une histoire des pratiques de l’écrit et de l’avènement des bureaucraties, du gouvernement pastoral et de la souveraineté pontificale, de la confession auriculaire et de l’espace public, ce livre entend dépasser le cadre classique de la monographie institutionnelle.

He also imports and imposes a system of norms, beliefs and forms of artistic expression in order to establish a political project that he considers legitimate. Situated on the edge of cultural and art history, this study aims to open up new perspectives on artistic creation during the Baroque period in Latin America. Lorsqu’un conquérant conscient de sa supériorité colonise un territoire, il ne se sert pas seulement de la puissance des armes et des techniques. Il importe et impose aussi un système de normes, de croyances et des formes d’expression artistique pour asseoir un projet politique qui lui semble d’entrée de jeu légitime. Située aux confins de l’histoire culturelle et de l’histoire des arts, cette étude s’efforce d’ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives sur la création artistique à l’époque baroque dans une Amérique Latine en voie de colonisation par les Européens, en analysant plus particulièrement le contexte d’apparition du syncrétisme religieux. À partir de l’étude minutieuse d’une sélection d’œuvres produites entre le xvie et le xviiie siècle dans la région andine (Pérou, Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur) et au Mexique, dans des domaines aussi divers que la gravure, la peinture, la sculpture ou encore l’architecture, il s’agit de montrer comment l’art du colonisateur intervient comme une instance productrice de normes et de jugements de valeur dans l’espace ibéro-­américain indigène. Dans l’Amérique coloniale, le syncrétisme dont témoigne l’art des premiers « créoles », autrement dit l’assimilation de nouveaux codes et leur amalgame avec le substrat culturel existant, encourage la négation de l’ancienne culture tout en procédant au recyclage d’anciens codes pour donner naissance à des croyances et des formes artistiques nouvelles, un métissage dont les conséquences, à la fois positives et négatives, se manifestent jusque de nos jours.

À l’orée du XXIe siècle, le système hérité de la Libération est, dans une large mesure, démantelé. Il a néanmoins permis à la France d’accomplir une conversion majeure dans la conduite de ses relations extérieures et de mettre en place sur de nombreux marchés extra-européens une politique d’influence fondée sur une image économique rénovée.

    Beschreibung: Pourquoi des syndicalismes si différents en Grande-Bretagne, en France et en Allemagne dès la fin du XIXe siècle ? Pour répondre à cette question on compare ici le Trade unionism, le syndicalisme révolutionnaire et le mouvement ouvrier allemand de façon très concrète. Plusieurs réunions ont permis de définir une problématique commune. Enfin, les différents tex te sont été discutés à l’occasion d’un colloque international financé par la Commission européenne.     Beschreibung: Dear colleagues, This Special Issue, “Endothelial Dysfunction: From Pathophysiology to Novel Therapeutic Approaches”, focuses on the pathophysiology of endothelial dysfunction, new biomarkers for endothelial dysfunction related to cardiovascular disorders or tumors, and novel therapeutic approaches for endothelial dysfunctions. Vascular endothelium is an active tissue and plays a crucial role in the maintenance of vascular homeostasis. Chronic exposure to risk factors, such as hypertension, high cholesterolemia, or oxidative stress, induces endothelial dysfunctions and results in a loss of endothelial integrity, smooth muscle cell proliferation, and macrophage recruitment. The pathophysiology of endothelial dysfunction (ED) is complex and multi-factorial factors are involved, such as oxidative stress or chronic inflammation. The primary prevention of cardiovascular risk factors and endothelial dysfunctions, as well as the early detection of or molecular imaging techniques for endothelial dysfunction, helps to prevent the development of cardiovascular disorders. Novel therapeutic approaches or drug delivery systems for endothelial dysfunctions have had promising beneficial effects in preclinical or clinical levels by affecting the progression of atherosclerotic changes, tumor angiogenesis, and host–immune reactions near tumor environments.

    Beschreibung: Molecularly imprinted polymers are materials that have voids that are complementary in shape, size, and electronic environment to a specific molecule used for preparation, known as the template. These voids are specific recognition sites that bind the templates preferentially and are used specifically for biomimetic sensors and for solid-phase extraction. Because the specific surface is very important during this process, the use of films and membranes is preferred. Civil Rights and the Environment in African-American Literature is the first book to explore the centrality of environmental problems to writing from the civil rights movement in the early decades of the century. Bringing ecocritical perspectives to bear on the work of such important writers as Booker T. Washington, W.E.B.     Beschreibung: While ports are traditionally considered national infrastructure sites that connect states to global markets, special economic zones and past free ports are portrayed as threats to national sovereignty. This book calls these narratives into question as it explores the history of planning Mumbai’s ports and free zones during periods of global and regional transition from the British Raj, to national independence, to economic liberalization. The book opens with a study of an unsuccessful plan hatched by merchants in 1833 to make Bombay a free port to deal with an emerging British India and the advent of free trade. The book ends with how India’s current special economic zones and emphasis on port expansion are part of broader goals to reposition India in transregional Asian trade, to connect Mumbai with northern India, and to enact local plans for a global city that threaten the very port that first connected Mumbai to the world. To understand the functionality of these port and zone projects beyond typical policy prescriptions, this book proposes portals of globalization as a spatial format that fosters processes of reterritorialization.

    Beschreibung: Ultrasonic waves are nowadays used for multiple purposes including both low-intensity/high frequency and high-intensity/low-frequency ultrasound. Low-intensity ultrasound transmits energy through the medium in order to obtain information about the medium or to convey information through the medium. It is successfully used in non-destructive inspection, ultrasonic dynamic analysis, ultrasonic rheology, ultrasonic spectroscopy of materials, process monitoring, applications in civil engineering, aerospace and geological materials and structures, and in the characterization of biological media. Nowadays, it is an essential tool for assessing metals, plastics, aerospace composites, wood, concrete, and cement. High-intensity ultrasound deliberately affects the propagation medium through the high local temperatures and pressures generated. It is used in industrial processes such as welding, cleaning, emulsification, atomization, etc.; chemical reactions and reactor induced by ultrasonic waves; synthesis of organic and inorganic materials; microstructural effects; heat generation; accelerated material characterization by ultrasonic fatigue testing; food processing; and environmental protection. This book collects eleven papers, one review, and ten research papers with the aim to present recent advances in ultrasonic wave propagation applied for the characterization or the processing of materials. Both fundamental science and applications of ultrasound in the field of material characterization and material processing have been gathered.

    Beschreibung: Pour René Girault, « être historien des relations internationales », ce n’est pas seulement faire de l’histoire des relations inter- nationales ou développer des recherches dans ce domaine, c’est aussi se poser des questions d’historien ; c’est réfléchir sans cesse sur la validité de ce qui constitue sa propre discipline. Parce que cette préoccupation marque constamment et fructueusement son œuvre, René Girault s’inscrit dans la prestigieuse lignée de Pierre Renouvin et de Jean-Baptiste Duroselle. Ses nombreux disciples ont voulu lui rendre hommage en rassemblant certains de ses textes et en sélectionnant précisément ceux qui rendent le mieux compte de sa réflexion historique. A n’en point douter, il existe une « méthode Girault », une méthode qui, prolongeant et renouvelant celle de Pierre Renouvin, tend à écrire une histoire globale des relations internationales, avec un horizon bien plus large que celui de l’histoire diplomatique traditionnelle. En analysant scrupuleusement les liens entre l’économique et le poli- tique, en mesurant le poids des représentations et des imaginaires sociaux, en démontant les mécanismes de décision, René Girault donne des éclairages très originaux sur des questions fondamentales : 1’« impérialisme », la « puissance », la place de la France dans le monde, la construction de l’Europe et l’identité européenne. Grand historien, René Girault est aussi un intellectuel en son siècle, pour qui toute réflexion sur l’histoire est aussi une réflexion sur la démocratie.

    Beschreibung: Issues relating to the gender schism and its effect on the career advancement of women in the Academy, especially in the field of STEM disciplines, deserve our attention and the efforts of all the scientific community to mitigate the gender gap. In order to embrace gender equality, recognize the career progression of women, and to celebrate the achievements of women in the field of bioorganic chemistry, we present contributions both from highly renowned female scientists and young female researchers who are in the early stages of their careers. This Special Issue includes fifteen manuscripts, including eleven high-quality research articles and four comprehensive review articles in the area of bioorganic chemistry, published from mid-2020 to early 2022. The scope of this Special Issue covers a wide range of topics at the organic chemistry–biology interface, including the synthesis and derivatization of natural compounds and their analogues, and the investigation of their biological activities in the human health field (for instance as antitumorals, antioxidants and antimicrobial agents), as well as their possible application in the crop protection field as agrochemicals. An example of nanoparticle-based biomaterial is also included. The techniques employed, besides organic synthesis, are in silico studies (docking procedures and molecular modeling), FT-IR spectroscopy, laser diffraction, PET, fluorescence, STD-NMR studies, enzymatic evaluation, experiments on cell lines and in vivo studies on mice.

    Beschreibung: Urbanization worldwide is a pervasive phenomenon of our time, and sustainable urban development is one of the greatest challenges faced by the contemporary world. The subsurface plays a range of roles in such developments through the complex processes of urbanization, including building development, constructing roads, and providing water supplies, drainage, sanitation, and even solid waste disposal.Urban groundwater problems are usually predictable; however, they are not predicted early enough. During recent decades, progressive advances in the scientific understanding of urban hydrogeological processes and the groundwater regimes of a substantial number of cities have been documented. This extensive array of subsurface challenges that cities have to contend with lies at the core of the sustainability of the urban water cycle. This is threatened by the increasing scale and downward extent of urban subsurface construction, including utilities (cables, sewage, and drainage), transportation (tunnels, passages), and storage (cellars, parking lots, and thermal energy). The cumulative impact of this subsurface congestion on the surrounding geology, and especially on the groundwater system, has to be constantly studied and addressed.In this volume, key connections amongst urban hydrogeology activities are identified as being consistent with scientific results and good practices in their relationship to subsurface data and knowledge on subsurface systems. The volume supports a useful dialogue between the providers and consumers of urban groundwater data and knowledge, offering new perspectives on the existing research themes.

    Beschreibung: Road transportation is a basic need for mobility and daily life. Currently, there are a number of challenges in dealing with distressed pavement and seeking new materials with sustainability in mind in pavement systems. Therefore, it is important to conduct further research in the following areas: (1) pavement structure, materials, and design; (2) pavement models as better solutions for pavement constructions; (3) pavement mechanics for improved understanding and mechanism analyses; (4) utilization of recycled materials for environmentally friendly solutions; (5) maintenance and rehabilitation for an extended life span of pavement; (6) intelligent construction for project management, energy conservation, and future constructions; and (7) innovative approaches to test and evaluate the performance of pavement materials. The purpose of this Special Issue “Achievements and Prospects of Advanced Pavement Materials Technologies” is to explore new research ideas for pavement materials as described above.

    Beschreibung: L’accroissement des mobilités de passagers et des circulations marchandes constitue, à partir de la seconde moitié du xviiie siècle, un véritable défi pour les forces de l’ordre chargées de leur contrôle. Cet ouvrage entend saisir les dynamiques historiques de ce contrôle en Europe et aux États-Unis, par une analyse des acteurs, des pratiques et des lieux où il s’exerce de New York à Naples, d’Anvers à Marseille. Cette régulation des trafics présente des configurations différentes selon les modes de transport (voiture à cheval ou automobile, chemin de fer, navigation à voile ou à vapeur), les échelles d’observation et les types de mobilités. Résolument inscrite dans les évolutions récentes de ce champ de recherche, la démarche est ici empirique, attentive à la façon dont les institutions évoluent sans cesse à travers leur action. Ce faisant, cette étude entend montrer en quoi les dynamiques territoriales propres aux mobilités contribuent depuis le xviiie siècle à former, modeler, reconfigurer les pratiques de leur discipline et de leur régulation.

    Beschreibung: « Cli-en-té-lis-me », le mot est ancien, dure et perdure. Mais de quoi parle-t-on au juste? « Je connais tel élu et il a le bras long, il pourra me trouver une place à la mairie! » Si la phrase est courante, quelles réalités et quels fantasmes recouvre-t-elle précisément ? Alors que le phénomène du clientélisme a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs études en sociologie et sciences politiques, cette pratique originale a moins retenu l’attention des historiens du politique. Spécialiste de l’histoire politique française contemporaine, Julie Bour entend étudier les acteurs, causes, modalités et limites du clientélisme via une approche quantitative originale et inédite, reposant sur l’exploitation statistique de corpus importants de courriers de recommandation, dépassant parfois les milliers de lettres entre les élus et leurs administrés et portant sur des dossiers sensibles, symboliques ou plus prosaïques (emplois, décorations, service militaire, aide sociale, affaires communales, etc.). Elle concentre son analyse sur un espace test particulier qui est celui de la Lorraine et l’appréhende sur le temps long qui va de la IIIe République aux années 2000. Au travers d’études de cas portant sur des élus célèbres (Louis Jacquinot, Pierre Messmer, François Guillaume, Christian Pierret) ou plus anonymes (Jean Bernard, Jules Develle, André Savard) qui représentent l’ensemble des courants politiques, le clientélisme apparaît pour ce qu’il est réellement : une pratique très répandue (et non limité à un Sud méditerranéen arriéré), qui structure la vie politique locale, mobilise tout un réseau d’intercesseurs relais, crée des solidarités fines entre l’élu et les électeurs, et joue un rôle parfois déterminant dans l’élection et la longévité politique de certains parlementaires. Cette pratique, ancrée sur la durée, institutionnalisée au point d’être déculpabilisée, interroge la démocratie dans ses limites en termes de corruption et de clientélisme.

    Beschreibung: People with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) have a particular sensory sensitivity, causing their surrounding environment to affect the quality of life significantly. It is called a “spectrum”, because there is a great variety of behaviours making it difficult to define universal and design criteria. These behaviours do however require a new dynamic and flexible approach, enabling the customization of the feedback to the project. Starting from the study of the specific needs of users, the environmental conditions and the design approaches, this research aims at providing innovative tools to support the design of “therapeutic” environments which could reduce the discomfort and stress related to the person’s enablement, in order to include them in the social community within an integrated life project, concerning “home”, applied living spaces (school, work, day centres...) and emergency conditions with respect to treatments.
