Beschreibung: Monoamine oxidase activity was higher in the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia of patients dying from Huntington's disease than in controls. Enzyme kinetics and multiple substrate studies indicated that the increased activity was due to elevated concentrations of monoamine oxidase type B. Concentrations of homovanillic acid were increased in the cerebral cortex but not in the basal ganglia of brains of patients with Huntington's disease. These changes may represent a primary aminergic lesion that could underlie some of the mental symptoms of this disease.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Mann, J J -- Stanley, M -- Gershon, S -- Rossor, M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Dec 19;210(4476):1369-71.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6449080" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Two- to threefold variations in sleep length were observed in 12 subjects living on self-selected schedules in an environment free of time cues. The duration of polygraphically recorded sleep episodes was highly correlated with the circadian phase of the body temperature rhythm at bedtime and not with the length of prior wakefulness. Furthermore, the rate of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep accumulation , REM latency, bedtime selection, and self-rated alertness assessments were also correlated with the body temperature rhythm.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Czeisler, C A -- Weitzman, E d -- Moore-Ede, M C -- Zimmerman, J C -- Knauer, R S -- AG-00792/AG/NIA NIH HHS/ -- GM-07365/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- MH-28460/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Dec 12;210(4475):1264-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7434029" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Bright artificial light suppressed nocturnal secretion of melatonin in six normal human subjects. Room light of less intensity, which is sufficient to suppress melatonin secretion in other mammals, failed to do so in humans. In contrast to the results of previous experiments in which ordinary room light was used, these findings establish that the human response to light is qualitatively similar to that of other mammals.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Lewy, A J -- Wehr, T A -- Goodwin, F K -- Newsome, D A -- Markey, S P -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Dec 12;210(4475):1267-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7434030" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Developmental equations, which predict 32 parameters of the electroencephalogram recorded from the healthy human as a function of age, were tested in diverse groups of children. Few significant deviations were found in normal children, even in a culture different from the one on which the equations were based. A high incidence of significant deviations was found in children with learning disabilities and those at risk for various neurological disorders.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Ahn, H -- Prichep, L -- John, E R -- Baird, H -- Trepetin, M -- Kaye, H -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Dec 12;210(4475):1259-62.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7434027" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: A substantial sex difference in mathematical reasoning ability (score on the mathematics test of the Scholastic Aptitude Test) in favor of boys was found in a study of 9927 intellectually gifted junior high school students. Our data contradict the hypothesis that differential course-taking accounts for observed sex differences in mathematical ability, but support the hypothesis that these differences are somewhat increased by environmental influences.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Benbow, C P -- Stanley, J C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Dec 12;210(4475):1262-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7434028" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Vasoactive intestinal peptide, a smooth-muscle relaxant neuropeptide with neurotransmitter properties, was relaxed during electrical field stimulation of guinea pig trachea. The amount released correlated with the degree of relaxation, and the release was blocked by tetrodotoxin. Prior incubation of the trachea with antiserum to vasoactive intestinal peptide reduced the relaxation. Thus vasoactive intestinal peptide may mediate the nonadrenergic relaxation of tracheal smooth muscle.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Matsuzaki, Y -- Hamasaki, Y -- Said, S I -- HL-14187/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Dec 12;210(4475):1252-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6254154" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Thirty-two linear regression equations predict the frequency composition of the electroencephalogram within four frequency bands, for four bilateral regions of the brain, as a function of age. Equations based on such data from large groups of healthy children in the United States and Sweden are closely similar. These equations describe the development of the electrical activity of the normal human brain, independent of cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, or sex factors.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉John, E R -- Ahn, H -- Prichep, L -- Trepetin, M -- Brown, D -- Kaye, H -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Dec 12;210(4475):1255-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7434026" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
