    Notes: A new direct search package is presented. Typical test functions solved establish the robustness and efficiency of the package. The most significant features of the package are that it works satisfactorily even in single precision and requires much less memory. It needs only the function values and the unidimensional search is totally dispensed with.     Notes: This paper attempts to answer two commonly raised questions during the preparation of a finite element mesh, for the linear elastic fracture analysis of cracked structure: how to set up the finite element mesh around the crack tip, and what level of accuracy is to be expected from such a modelling.Two test problems, with known analytical expressions for their stress intensity factors, are analysed by the finite element method using the isoparametric quadratic singular element. The modified parameters were the order of integration, aspect ratio, number of elements surrounding the crack tip, use of transition elements, the singular element length over the total crack length, the symmetry of the mesh around the crack tip. Based on these analyses, a data base is created and various plots produced. The results are interpreted, the accuracy evaluated and recommendations drawn.Contrary to previous reports, it is found that the computed stress intensity factor (SIF) remains within engineering accuracy (10 per cent) throughout a large range of l/a (singular element length over crack length) for problems with a uniform non-singular stress distribution ahead of the crack tip (i.e. double edge notch), and l/a should be less than 0·1 for problems with a non-singular stress gradient (i.e three-point bend). Also, it is found that the best results are achieved by using at least four singular elements around the crack tip, with their internal angles around 45 degrees, and a reduced (2 × 2) numerical integration.

    Notes: This paper presents and analyses methods for design sensitivity analysis of static response for structural systems when general boundary conditions are used during the analysis phase. The design sensitivity analysis methods where the boundary conditions are used to reduce the equilibrium equation have been presented earlier. In such procedures, the reduced stiffness matrix is non-singular. This fact is used to show differentiability of the displacement vector. When reduction procedures are not used, the global structural stiffness matrix may be singular. In such a case, differentiability of the displacement vector may be questionable. However, it is shown that the displacement vector is still differentiable. Several forms of the structural design sensitivity equations are presented. Although these equations are derived with Lagrange multiplier treatment of general boundary conditions, it is shown that they are applicable with any treatment of general boundary conditions. For example, they can also be used with co-ordinate reduction schemes. Therefore, design sensitivity analysis can be carried out with any existing finite element analysis computer code. Moreover, the procedures presented can be used to calculate sensitivity of a force of constraint can that is desired. The formulations are kept quite general such that design dependent boundary conditions can be routinely treated. An example is used to illustrate the procedures.

    Notes: In this paper, an efficient, exact zooming technique is developed which employs static condensation and exact structural reanalysis methods. For a multiple level of zooming such that the successive level of zooming is contained within the prior levels of zoom, repeated application of static condensation will reduce the system to one that is associated only with the degrees-of-freedom (dof) of the original model. Then, application of an exact static reanalysis technique permits the displacements at the dof of the original model that are contained in the final zoomed portion of the structure to be obtained first. Next, the response external to the zoom, as well as the response of additional dof within various levels of zooming, can be computed. With the triangular factor of the stiffness matrix of the original system available, this approach involves only the solution of a system of equations of small order. The proposed method is demonstrated by a numerical example.

    Notes: A new method for the formulation of hybrid elements by the Hellinger-Reissner principle is established by expanding the essential terms of the assumed stresses as complete polynomials in the natural coordinates of the element. The equilibrium conditions are imposed in a variational sense through the internal displacements which are also expanded in the natural co-ordinates. The resulting element possesses all the ideal qualities, i.e. it is invariant, it is less sensitive to geometric distortion, it contains a minimum number of stress parameters and it provides accurate stress calculations. For the formulation of a 4-node plane stress element, a small perturbation method is used to determine the equilibrium constraint equations. The element has been proved to be always rank sufficient.

    Notes: Simple solutions are extracted from the exact compatibility equations of inextensional bending for a special class of shell shapes, and it is speculated that these solutions provide useful criteria towards evaluating finite elements for these and closely related shapes. Curved finite elements of a quadratic parametric representation, which do not belong to the special class, are then studied. By using a series of exact inextensional bending displacements, it is concluded from numerical evidence that the criteria apply to finite element shapes in this representation when they are shallow, as is usually the case in practice. Criteria for homogeneous membrane actions follow from Gol'denveizer's static-geometric analogue.

    Notes: This paper describes the stages of development of an optimum structural design scheme. Any attempt to generate the optimum scantlings of a structure of even moderate complexity usually poses nonlinear programming problems for which there exist no universally accepted solution method. The structure considered here is a complete compartment of a single-hulled ship acted upon by multiple load cases. The elastic responses under four different load types are obtained by a quasi finite element analysis routine developed specifically for this purpose. Sequential linear programming (SLP) with appropriate artifices to achieve rapid convergence has been successfully employed as an optimization routine to minimize the object function, which in this case was the total weight of the major structural members. The test problem has 490 basic degrees-of-freedom, 21 free design variables and more than 100 mixed constraints, the majority of which are nonlinear implicit stress functions. The method is then applied to a number of cases representative of small warship designs. Suggestions for future extensions and general conclusions are included at the end of the paper.

    Notes: The simulation of a large-scale gas transmission network involves the numerical solution of a large system of initial valued, stiff algebraic/differential equations. Rapid changes in the solution are present due to the disturbances generated by the varying consumer demand and the operation of network controlling devices such as compressors. This paper discusses the design of an efficient variable-step integrator for the solution of the problem. Two sets of strategies are presented for implementing the variable-step integrator; one for the implicit numerical method such as the diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta methods, and the other for the linearly implicit Rosenbrock-type method. The performance of the numerical methods implemented are compared with the British Gas simulation program PAN on a number of large, realistic transmission networks.

    Notes: This paper presents the modelling of open shells, such as those used in roof construction, by means of a single-layered, pin-jointed truss. The latter exhibits several advantages over existing framework models, such as, for example, statical determinacy and the capacity to cope with arbitrary material constants. In the present article, the truss model is developed for and applied to the numerical analysis of shells subject to the membrane hypothesis. However, the same statically determinate model forms the basis for a computational scheme for analysing shells according to the more formal, statically indeterminate bending theory; the latter application of the truss model will be presented in a subsequent paper.

    Notes: An approach for the fully automatic generation of three-dimensional finite element meshes is presented. The method is specifically designed for use with solid modelling systems which provide a complete and unique definition of the geometry of a part. The method follows from the basic concepts of the octree encoding technique with specific modifications made to produce valid, user controllable finite element meshes.     Notes: A 48 degrees-of-freedom (d.o.f.) quadrilateral thin elastic shell finite element using variable-order polynomial functions, B-spline functions and rational B-spline functions to model the shell surface is developed. This development may allow the stiffness formulation of the shell element to be linked to the geometry data bases created by computer aided design systems. The displacement functions are that of bicubic Hermitian polynomials. The displacement functions and d.o.f. are expressed and investigated in both the curvilinear and Cartesian forms. The cuivilinear form is simpler and can provide the proper solution for a certain class of shell problems. For certain highly curved shells such as bellows, however, the curvilinear form fails to properly model some rigid body modes even with either the explicit inclusion of rigid body terms or the high order displacement functions. It is suggested in this study that such difficulty can be circumvented and the rigid body modes can be properly included if a Cartesian form is used for displacement functions. The strain-displacement equations are expressed in curvilinear co-ordinates. Thus, the Cartesian displacement functions require a transformation to curvilinear displacement at each numerical integration point. Examples include a pinched cylinder, a translational shell under central load, a uniformly loaded hypar shell, a pressurized ovel shell, a semi-toroidal bellows and a U-shaped bellows. For the first four examples, geometric modellings consist of polynomials of second-order (subparametric), third-order (isoparametric), and fourth and fifth-order (both superparametric) as well as B-spline functions of fourth- and fifth-order. The geometries of the pinched cylinder, the semi-toroidal bellows, and the U-shaped bellows were modelled exactly using rational B-spline functions. All the results obtained are in good agreement with alternative existing solutions.

    Notes: A combined iterative method is formulated for the partial solution of the eigenproblem Ax = λBx that arises from the application of the finite element method. The method is a combination of the conjugate gradient (CG) method and the symmetric successive co-ordinate overrelaxation (SSCOR) method. Both of these methods belong to the same family of iterative methods which retain their vectorial form and approach the solution by seeking stationary points of the Rayleigh quotient. The formulation consists in splitting a characteristic matrix into the sum of two matrices, one of which corresponds to the SSCOR matrix, and then accelerating the associated iteration using the CG. The behaviour of the method is illustrated for five test cases and comparisons are made with other iterative methods. The influence of the relaxation parameter ω on the computational efficiency of the methods is also studied.

    Notes: It is sometimes convenient to express a numerical algorithm in terms of a network model. The physical picture given can often help the engineer to visualize the properties of the method. In field problems, a lumped network model corresponds to a space discrete field while a transmission-line model corresponds to a field which is discrete in space and time. In this paper, the relationship is given between the lumped network models and transmission-line network models used in the steady-state solution of Maxwell's equations in two and three space dimensions. The use of dual networks is also discussed. An analysis is given for the velocity of waves travelling in any direction across the networks and this is used to compare the accuracy of the models. The use of diakoptics or substructures for the solution of large networks is outlined and this is illustrated by a compound two-dimensional example.

    Notes: Upwind and central difference schemes for laminar and turbulent flows over a step in a two-dimensional channel are compared with each other and with experiment. Vorticity ω and stream function ψ are used as dependent variables and it is shown that an upwind difference method can give predictions which agree with experiment for high Reynolds number flows. The numerical implementation of the boundary conditions is found critically to determine the solutions obtained. Explicit prescription of ψ and ω at the inlet leads to incorrect values of the inlet velocity component perpendicular to the flow and a solution that does not agree with experiment. Experimental evidence is not available at low Reynolds numbers, but it is found that upwind differences give recirculation zones 8 per cent shorter and 8 per cent less intense than the more conventional conditionally stable central difference method.The distribution of the false diffusion effect in the upwind scheme is considered, and it is shown by use of a simple example that previous statements as to possible minimization of this effect are not generally true.The difficulty of determining the pressure distribution from the vorticity and stream function model is analysed and illustrated.Further, turbulent separated flows are seen to contain regions where two-dimensional time-dependent flow does not exist, and conventional theories do not give good results.

    Notes: A method for calculating natural frequencies and mode shapes of large structural systems with substructures and the subspace iteration is developed. The method uses only substructural stiffness matrices and the mass matrix for each finite element of the system. The mass matrix for the entire structure or any of its substructures need not be computed. However, efficiency of the method is improved when mass matrix for the entire structure is computed and saved in the computer core. No approximating assumptions are made. Thus, natural frequencies and mode shapes for the finite element model employed are the same with or without the substructuring algorithm. This is demonstrated by computing first ten natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes for an open truss helicopter tail-boom structure.

    Notes: A simple, efficient finite element method has been presented for the solution of a variety of scalar field problems in two dimensions. It is based on the mapping of the physical problem domain into an ‘image’ domain in the w-plane. The governing equation(s) and the boundary conditions in the physical plane are also appropriately transformed into the w-plane. The processes of standard finite element analysis are then implemented to obtain a solution in the w-plane.The method has been explained in detail, with illustrative examples where appropriate; it has several important advantages over the standard finite element method, particularly for the solution of infinite or semi-infinite domain problems. The method has been demonstrated to be simple, efficient, economical and potentially capable of dealing with a large repartoire of two-dimensional problems, including non-homogeneity, nonlinearity, etc.

    Notes: Both the central and upwind difference schemes are commonaly employed to solve the Navier-Stokes equations governing the two-dimensional laminar flow of an incompressible laminar flow of an incompressible viscous fluid. By a judicious choice of a damping parameter and using direct methods for solving the systems of linear equations appearing in an iterative procedure, the central difference scheme could be made to give convergent results even for large Reynolds numbers. Using a model problem of flow through a driven square cavity it is shown that the converged results so obtained become progressively oscillatory and inaccurate as the Reynolds number increases. It is known that the central difference scheme gives more accurate results than the upwind difference scheme, at least for small values of Reynolds number. However, for a reasonably small mesh size the numerical solutions obtained by using either the central or the upwind difference scheme do not differ appreciably at low Reynolds numbers. There is a small range of Reynolds numbers for which the central difference scheme may yield more accurate results than the upwind difference scheme; however, this range is not known a priori.

    Notes: Numerical solutions for two-dimensional or axisymmetric viscous fluid flow problems are usually based on the stream function/vorticity formulation. Frequently, however, the pressure distribution is of prime interest. Difficulties have been reported in the literature with the use of obvious pressure marching schemes. Consequently, several investigators have preferred to use an iterative method which involves solving a Poisson equation with Neumann boundary conditions. In this paper, the fundamental cause of failure of the marching schemes is investigated. The authors introduce the concept of compatible pressure and vorticity schemes and show that lack of compatibility has been the principal reason for the poor results obtained using marching schemes. Compatible pressure marching methods are developed and shown to give good results. Comparisons are made between the Poisson equation method and the compatible marching method. To make the comparisons meaningful, special test cases with analytical solutions have been used.

    Notes: The procedures for utilizing substructuring and static condensation in structural analysis are well known. However, until recently there have been no general-purpose structural mechanics computer systems that offer multi-level substructuring combined with a convenient method for defining the structural model. Now that such systems are available, engineers must decide when substructuring techniques are useful. Substructuring, with and without condensation, has proved to be highly efficient in the analysis of certain classes of structure. It can reduce computer costs by a factor of from 2 to 100. Yet, indiscriminate use of condensation may result in unnecessary and expensive computations. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of substructuring relative to data entry and computational efficiency. Guidelines are proposed for engineers to follow when using substructuring in the analysis of linear and nonlinear structures. The FINITE system is used to illustrate actual implementation of substructuring features in a general purpose finite element system.

    Notes: A modification (Irons;6 Concus et al. 1) to the conjugate gradient (CG) method by Hestenes and Stiefel5 has recently renewed the interest in this elegant technique which appears to be extraordinarily promising for large sparse systems Ax = b, where A is a symmetric positive definite matrix. A good approximation K-1 for the inverse of A is needed in the modified algorithm. For finite difference sets of equations, Meijerink and van der Vorst9 and Kershaw7 have experienced a very fast convergence with a matrix K-1 determined by the incomplete Cholesky decomposition of A.A further acceleration of the iteration may be achieved by preliminarily processing the initial guessed solution by the Newton iterative scheme before using the modified conjugate gradient (MCG) method. The initial Newton iterations (NI) have the useful property of significantly reducing the components of the residual r0 along the eigenvectors of AK-1 associated with the eigenvalues lying in the vicinity of 1. The latter are expected to include the vast majority of the eigenvalues of AK-1. As a result the MCG method is left with a smaller number of r0 components to set to zero in a reduced dimensional eigenvector space and hence the solution is arrived at in fewer iterations. Depending on the desired final accuracy, up to 50 per cent of the MCG iterations may be equivalently replaced by an equal number of NI which are computationally faster.This approach has been applied to the solution of finite element sets of linear equations arising from the arbitrarily irregular triangle discretization of groundwater flow domains in both steady and unsteady conditions. For diagonally dominant matrices the results emphasize the excellent performance of the MCG method which proved much faster than the first-degree Chebyshev iteration (CHI) and required a number of iterations an order of magnitude smaller than the successive over-relaxation technique (SOR) with optimum over-relaxation factor.

    Notes: Hybrid elements for the representation of elastic media are based upon extended variational principle. In the discretization process the hybrid deformation model requires an expansion of the displacement field as well as of the Lagrange multipliers at the boundary. Using an extension of the common shape function concept, these hybrid elements can be reduced to the basis of the simple minimum principle of potential energy with only one expansion of the displacements. An application to plate elements is given and a discussion about some consequences of the approach.

    Notes: A new approach to the generation of near-optimum finite element meshes is presented. Like other current methods, the procedure presented uses the results of a previous analysis to improve the idealization, but unlike other procedures a new element mesh is generated in each cycle with the aid of interactive computer graphics. The procedure generates near-optimum two-dimensional meshes on one cycle employing a grid optimization criterion based on variations in the strain energy density and using a software system which operates like an interactive finite element preprocessor. The example problems presented demonstrate the efficiency and flexibility of the approach.

    Notes: An analysis procedure for the plane strain contained plastic deformation problem is proposed. It is shown that, when piecewise-linear elastic-plastic laws are adopted, the plane strain problem can be formulated in terms of exactly the same variables appearing in a plane stress problem, even if the transverse stress and plastic strain components do not vanish in general. The two problems are governed by the same equilibrium and compatibility equations and the only difference is in the elastic-plastic material constitutive laws, in complete analogy with the linear elastic case.The problem is discretized by using a compatible finite element model on which basic elastic-plastic constitutive laws for an element in plane strain conditions can be obtained. When the assemblage is performed, the resulting set of governing relations presents a mathematical structure which enable, for solution, techniques efficiently used for truss and frame problems. Some solutions for axisymmetric tubes subjected to pressure and temperature gradients are illustrated.

    Notes: A numerical scheme is developed to simulate the non-isothermal steady-state behaviour of a MOS field effect transistor. In a desire to develop a fast, stable numerical scheme, physical instabilities were eliminated by using a simplified device model. The numerical technique developed permits a computer solution of the majority carrier transport equation, the nonlinear heat conduction equation, in which the heat generation term is obtained from the solution of the transport equation, and a number of auxiliary differential equations.The simplified model of the MOS transistor adopted will not, of course, produce any information on the actual operation of the short channel MOS transistor of practical interest today, but the numerical scheme can be extended to simulate short channel models that are of great practical interest.

    Notes: A nonlinear analysis is carried out for the motion of the inviscid, incompressible fluid in a two-dimensional, rigid, open container which is subjected to forced sinusoidal pitching oscillation. Firstly, the problem is defined as a nonlinear initial-boundary value problem by the use of a governing differential equation and boundary conditions. Next, the problem is formulated in the form of a pseudo-variational principle, which provides a basis for our discretization. The finite element method and finite difference method are used spacewise and timewise, respectively. Due to the strong nonlinearity of the problem, an incremental method is used for the numerical analysis. Numerical results obtained by the present method are compared with solutions of the linear theory and experimental data. The difference between linear and nonlinear analysis has been clearly indicated.

    Notes: Geometric programming is a powerful technique and its application to mechanism synthesis has not been fully explored. In this paper, slider-crank mechanism is chosen since the objective function consists of a large number of terms while there are only two design variables. Thus the degree of difficulty is more and does not lend itself to easy application of the geometric programming. Here, modification of the objective function is suggested so that the degree of difficulty reduces to zero even when the working space constraint is imposed. This results in a near optimum solution.     Notes: Recently developed computer aided design systems for the design and modification of complex physical solids using interactive computer graphics offer the exciting possibility of an integrated design/analysis system. Called geometric modellers, these systems build complex solids from primitive solids (cubes, cylinders, spheres, etc.) and macro solids (combinations of primitives). To provide an effective finite element analysis capability for these systems, methods must be devised to ease the burden of discretizing the solid geometry into a user controlled finite element mesh. In this paper we describe a new class of transitional blended finite elements which make substantially simpler the task of finite element mesh generation and local mesh refinement. Computational experience indicates that numerical accuracy is not compromised by use of these flexible elements.

    Notes: A non-iterative method is presented for solving a system of algebraic equations forming a banded matrix with each diagonal submatrix being tridiagonal and all other submatrices being diagonal. A recursion relation is assumed between successive elements of the solution vector. This relation is determined by equating a linearly combined form of it with the original set of equations also being linearly combined. The solution vector is determined by back-substitution of elements in the recursion relation. Since the method takes advantage of the banded structure of the matrix, it is more efficient than the conventional methods. A FORTRAN program that incorporates the present method is included.

    Notes: A finite element model that is suitable for the analysis of shells of revolution with arbitrary local deviations is presented. The model employs three types of shell elements: rotational, general and transitional. The rotational shell elements, which are most efficient, are used in the region where the shell is axisymmetric. The general shell elements, which can simulate almost any shell geometry, are used in the local region of the deviation. The transitional shell elements connect these two distinctively different types of elements and make it possible to combine them in a single analysis.The form of the global stiffness matrix is somewhat unique in the new model. Non-zero terms are not confined to a narrow band along the diagonal, but occur throughout the matrix. This is due to the following: (1) two different types of nodes, ring nodes and point nodes, are combined in a single analysis; and (2) a locally non-axisymmetric geometry creates a coupling of the Fourier harmonic coefficients of the rotational elements. Yet, the matrix still contains many scattered zero terms that should be considered for numerical efficiency. In this paper an efficient solution procedure that is effective for this situation is developed. The steps include the use of a substructuring technique and separate partial harmonic analysis. A numerical example is presented and compared with existing solutions to demonstrate the capabilities and the efficiency of the new model.

    Notes: A Ritz finite element approach is used here to study the large amplitude free flexural vibrations of beams with immovable ends. The formulation is based on Lagrange's equation of motion with the definition of the time function at an instant corresponding to the point of reversal. The element displacement vector is chosen as a combination of inplane and transverse displacements. The nonlinear stiffness is written as a combination of the bending-membrane interaction and bending stiffness. The solution for nonlinear equations is sought by using an algorithm - the direct iteration technique - suitably modified for eigenvalue problems. Convergence is checked using the displacement norms on eigen-modes, and frequency norms for eigenvalues.The nonlinear frequencies, and modeshapes for transverse and longitudinal displacements, are determined for the simply-supported, clamped-clamped and simply-supported-clamped beams. Results are presented in the form of tables. In almost all the cases the nonlinear frequency values are found to be the lower bound like the earlier Galerkin finite element method.

The algorithm is suitable for complex electromagnetic field problems where a magnetic scalar potential, affected by current loops, is to be calculated in a multiply connected region. Problems in fluid dynamics with vorticity affecting a scalar potential, could also be attacked with this algorithm. Since finite element methods are ubiquitous in field calculations, the cuts of the space constructed by the algorithm should ideally correspond to the given discretization; this can be arranged by an application of the Lebesgue Covering Theorem, for which a second algorithm is provided.

    Notes: This work presents an optimality criteria method which accurately and efficiently solves the structural optimization problem of trusses subject to deflection and stress constraints. The method is based upon the Newton-Raphson method and a first-order approximation both for deflection and stress constraints using the method of virtual work. It solves the problem rigorously and no serious difficulties have yet been encountered in spite of the drawbacks inherent in the Newton-Raphson method. Worked examples show its superiority to other methods and its ability to cope with trusses with many members and subject to multiple constraints.

    Notes: A simple element numbering algorithm is described which yields near-minimal frontwidths for two- and three-dimensional finite element assemblies. Renumbering of E elements requires an immediate-access computer memory size which is proportional to the square root of E in two-dimensional problems, and to the two-thirds power of E in three dimensions. This very small memory requirement allows processing of large problems in minicomputers. When used in large computers, page-swapping operations are minimized.

    Notes: Two general algorithms for refining triangular computational meshes based on the bisection of triangles by the longest side are presented and discussed. The algorithms can be applied globally or locally for selective refinement of any conforming triangulation and always generate a new conforming triangulation after a finite number of interactions even when locally used. The algorithms also ensure that all angles in subsequent refined triangulations are greater than or equal to half the smallest angle in the original triangulation; the shape regularity of all triangles is maintained and the transition between small and large triangles is smooth in a natural way. Proofs of the above properties are presented. The second algorithm is a simpler, improved version of the first which retains most of the properties of the latter. The algorithms can be used either for constructing irregular computational meshes or for locally refining any given triangulation. In this sense they can be adequately combined with adaptive and/or multigrid techniques for solving finite element systems. Examples of the application of the algorithms are given and two possible generalizations are pointed out.
