Notes: Abstract A new method is presented for finding a local optimum of the equality constrained nonlinear programming problem. A nonlinear autonomous system is introduced as the base of the theory instead of usual approaches. The relation between critical points and local optima of the original optimization problem is proved. Asymptotic stability of the critical points is also proved. A numerical algorithm which is capable of finding local optima systematically at the quadratic rate of convergence is developed from a detailed analysis of the nature of trajectories and critical points. Some numerical results are given to show the efficiency of the method.

Notes: Abstract Ten codes or code variants were used to solve the five equivalent posynomial GP problem formulations. Four of these codes were general NLP codes; six were specialized GP codes. A total of forty-two test problems was solved with up to twenty randomly generated starting points per problem. The convex primal formulation is shown to be intrinsically easiest to solve. The general purpose GRG code called OPT appears to be the most efficient code for GP problem solution. The reputed superiority of the specialized GP codes GGP and GPKTC appears to be largely due to the fact that these codes solve the convex primal formulation. The dual approaches are only likely to be competitive for small degree of difficulty, tightly constrained problems.

Notes: Abstract The recently proposed quasi-Newton method for constrained optimization has very attractive local convergence properties. To force global convergnce of the method, a descent method which uses Zangwill's penalty function and an exact line search has been proposed by Han. In this paper a new method which adopts a differentiable penalty function and an approximate line is presented. The proposed penalty function has the form of the augmented Lagrangian function. An algorithm for updating parameters which appear in the penalty function is described. Global convergence of the given method is proved.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we suggest approximations for smoothing out the kinks caused by the presence of “max” or “min” operators in many non-smooth optimization problems. We concentrate on the continuous-discrete min—max optimization problem. The new approximations replace the original problem in some neighborhoods of the kink points. These neighborhoods can be made arbitrarily small, thus leaving the original objective function unchanged at almost every point ofR n . Furthermore, the maximal possible difference between the optimal values of the approximate problem and the original one, is determined a priori by fixing the value of a single parameter. The approximations introduced preserve properties such as convexity and continuous differentiability provided that each function composing the original problem has the same properties. This enables the use of efficient gradient techniques in the solution process. Some numerical examples are presented.

Notes: Abstract It is known that augmented Lagrangian or multiplier methods for solving constrained optimization problems can be interpreted as techniques for maximizing an augmented dual functionD c(λ). For a constantc sufficiently large, by considering maximizing the augmented dual functionD c(λ) with respect toλ, it is shown that the Newton iteration forλ based on maximizingD c(λ) can be decomposed into taking a Powell/Hestenes iteration followed by a Newton-like correction. Superimposed on the original Powell/Hestenes method, a simple acceleration technique is devised to make use of information from the previous iteration. For problems with only one constraint, the acceleration technique is equivalent to replacing the second (Newton-like) part of the decomposition by a finite difference approximation. Numerical results are presented.

Notes: Abstract Optimality conditions for families of nonlinear programming problems inR n are studied from a generic point of view. The objective function and some of the constraints are assumed to depend on a parameter, while others are held fixed. Techniques of differential topology are used to show that under suitable conditions, certain strong second-order conditions are necessary for optimality except possibly for parameter values lying in a negligible set.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports the development of a new algorithm for solving the general constrained optimization problem (that of optimizing an objective function subject to both equality and inequality constraints). The approach is based on the complementary pivoting algorithms which have been developed to solve certain classes of fixed point problems. The specific approach is to use the equality constraints to solve for some variables in terms of the remaining ones thus enabling one to eliminate the equality constraints altogether. The result, under certain circumstances, is an optimization problem which may be transformed into a fixed point problem in such a way that a complementary pivoting code may be used to search for a solution. Seventeen test problems have been solved by this method and the results are compared against those obtained from GRG (Generalized Reduced Gradient method). The results of the tests indicate that the fixed point approach is robust (all 17 problems were solved by this method where as GRG solved 16). As to the computer times, the fixed point code proved to be as fast or faster than GRG on the lower dimensional problems; however, as the dimension increased, the trend reversed and on a 40 dimensional problem GRG was approximately 11 times faster. The conclusion from these tests is that when the dimension of the original problem can be reduced sufficiently by the equality constraints, the fixed point approach appears to be more effective than GRG.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we motivate and describe an algorithm to solve the nonlinear programming problem. The method is based on an exact penalty function and possesses both global and superlinear convergence properties. We establish the global qualities here (the superlinear nature is proven in [7]). The numerical implementation techniques are briefly discussed and preliminary numerical results are given.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we give first- and second-order conditions to characterize a local minimizer of an exact penalty function. The form of this characterization gives support to the claim that the exact penalty function and the nonlinear programming problem are closely related. In addition, we demonstrate that there exist arguments for the penalty function from which there are no descent directions even though these points are not minimizers.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we consider the final stage of a ‘global’ method to solve the nonlinear programming problem. We prove 2-step superlinear convergence. In the process of analyzing this asymptotic behavior, we compare our method (theoretically) to the popular successive quadratic programming approach.

Notes: We study an elastic body comprising an inclusion whose thickness is 2∊ and for which Lamé's constants are λ∊ and μ. We are interested in the limit behaviour of the inclusion, when ∊ → 0 and μ∊ → ∊; that is when the inclusion becomes thiner and more rigid. Different behaviours are possible, according to the rate at which μ∊ converges to infinity; the limit inclusion may “vanish” if it is not very rigid, but also it may be entirely solid.

Notes: The generalized Feller equation is a linear, autonomous, parabolic equation of a positive space variable and a time variable. Its coefficients are power functions of the space variable, and they depend on four parameters. In general, the equation is singular at the origin and at infinity. It contains as special cases the special Feller equation, the Kepinski equation, and the standard heat equation. The main objective of the present paper is to establish series expansions of solutions of the generalized Feller equation in terms of the elements of two sequences of particular solutions. The elements of one of these sequences are particular initial condition solutions. The two sequences are biorthogonal. The main result is that a solution does have the desired expansion property if and only if it has the Huygens property in some neighborhood of the origin of the time variable.

Notes: The problem of stress determination in the area of cut-outs in circular cylindrical shells at given loads is of great interest in industrial practice. This work deals with a mixed boundary value problem of a differential equation derived according to the theory of shallow shells. On part Ct1 of the boundary, the displacements are given, whereas the stresses are specified on the remaining part Ct2. Starting from the Betti-Maxwell principle and with the aid of the fundamental solutions for unit loads and unit displacements, integral representations can be derived for the displacement functions as well as the stress functions. The problem is then transformed into an equivalent system of Fredholm integral equations of the first kind with logarithmic kernels as the main part. As the integral equations together with the auxiliary conditions form a strongly elliptical system of pseudo-differential operators, the Galerkin method converges. Assuming that curves Ct1 and Ct1 do not have points of intersection and that the data are sufficiently regular, the required functions are approximated by cubic splines and, for simplicity's sake, the integral equation system is solved by approximation with a collocation method. In view of the complicated terms of the kernel functions, the kernels are split into a regular and a singular part, the regular part being in turn replaced by cubic splines. The remaining integrations are done numerically by means of Gaussian quadrature formulae. The applicability of the method is demonstrated with the example of a cylinder under internal pressure.

Notes: In this paper the three-dimensional perturbation flow induced by a rotating and oscillating blade row which operates in a subsonic flow in axial direction of an annular channel is studied. The velocity potential is reduced to the infinite Hilbert space vector of Fourier coefficients of an eigen-function expansion with respect to vanishing normal derivatives on both cylinder walls. These coefficients satisfy an infinite set of ordinary differential equations of second order after an application of a one-dimensional Fourier transform in axial direction.Several canonical two-part mixed boundary value problems are then investigated by reduction to “infinite two-by-two-Wiener-Hopf functional systems”. In case of strong factorizability of certain matrix-operator-valued functions on the line these systems may be solved explicitely. Criteria for the factorization are not given here.

Notes: In the paper a boundary value problem is studied for the equation of mixed typek(y)uxx + uyy + r(x, y)u = f(x, y) in the rectangular domain {(x, y)| -1 〈 x 〈 +1, yc 〈 y 〈 yH} with yc 〈 0, yH 〉 0, k(y) = sign y|y|m, m 〉 0 (and more generally for a function k = k(y) with k(O) = 0, k(y)y 〉 O for y ≠ O). Specific for the stated problem is that no data are prescribed on the line {(x, yc), -1 〈 x 〈 +1}. It is proved that the formulated problem is well-posed in the sense that there is at most one quasi-regular solution and that a generalized solution exists. The energy-integral-(abc-)method is used to show uniqueness and to obtain an apriori estimate for the solution of the adjoint problem whence the existence statement follows.

Notes: In this paper we present new methods to solve the classical Dirichlet and Neumann problems for ΔU + k2U = 0. We prove that the solutions of this equation for a region S containing G restricted to G are dense in L2(∂G). Introducing a basis in the space of solutions for S we find a complete orthogonal system in L2(∂G) which can be used to solve the boundary value problems by means of approximation in the Hilbertspace norm. Regularity estimates lead to series expansions in G.The well-known basis systems obtained by separation of variables thus may be used for every regular region without the very special geometric restrictions. Another class of basis systems may be obtained in analogy to the Runge. theorems by considering types of singularity functions.

Notes: We present two numerical methods for the solution of Hopf bifurcation problems involving ordinary differential equations. The first one consists in a discretization of the continuous problem by means of shooting or multiple shooting methods. Thus a finite-dimensional bifurcation problem of special structure is obtained. It may be treated by appropriate iterative algorithms. The second approach transforms the Hopf bifurcation problem into a regular nonlinear boundary value problem of higher dimension which depends on a perturbation parameter ∊. It has isolated solutions in the ∊-domain of interest, so that conventional discretization methods can be applied. We also consider a concrete Hopf bifurcation problem, a biological feedback inhibition control system. Both methods are applied to it successfully.

Notes: For a parabolic model problem it is shown that the convergence rate of higher order finite element approximation is quasioptimal in L∞. Moreover, the estimate does not depend on the interval [0, T]. The essential tool of the proof is a modified weighted norm technique.

Notes: In this paper we study the elastic wave diffraction in R3 through a heterogeneous medium, with periodic structure, which occupies a bounded domain. We show that, as the period tends to zero, the solution tends, in some sense, to the solution corresponding to the diffraction by an obstacle made of the classical “homogenized medium”. An analogous result is also proved for the scattering frequencies and the associated scattering functions.

Notes: In an earlier paper [1] a general procedure has been presented to obtain polynomial spline approximations for the solution of the initial value problem for ordinary differential equations. In this paper the general procedure is described by an equivalent one step method. Furthermore two convergence theorems are proved for a special case which is not included in the general convergence or divergence theory given in [1].

Notes: Atomistic equations of the electromagnetic field for a particle with spin are derived from a Lagrangian. These equations are consistent with the equations of motion for such a particle. The resulting phenomenological equations are the well-known equations of Maxwell for the electromagnetic field in matter. The atomistic field equations for a particle with spin and magnetic moment give a dipole field. This result and the corresponding quantum mechanics for a particle with spin are applied to compute the hyperfine structure of the hydrogen atom by perturbation theory.

Notes: The paper is concerned with boundary singularities of weak solutions of boundary value problems governed by the biharmonic operator. The presence of angular corner points or points at which the type of boundary condition changes in general causes local singularities in the solution. For that case the general theory of V. A. Kondrat'ev provides a priori estimates in weighted Sobolev norms and asymptotic singular representations for the solution which essentially depend on the zeros of certain transcendental functions. The distribution of these zeros will be analysed in detail for the biharmonic operator under several boundary conditions. This leads to sharp a priori estimates in weighted Sobolev norms where the weight function is characterized by the inner angle of the boundary corner. Such estimates for “negative” Sobolev norms are used to analyse also weakly nonlinear perturbations of the biharmonic operator as, for instance, the von Kármán model in plate bending theory and the stream function formulation of the steady state Navier-Stokes problem. It turns out that here the structure of the corner singularities is essentially the same as in the corresponding linear problem.

Notes: One considers an elastic halfspace with depth (x1) dependent density Q and Lamé moduli (λ,m̈). Impulsive stresses τli = δ(x2, x3)δ(t) for x1 = 0 are applied with displacement responses ui = gi(t, x2, x3) at x1 = 0 (i = 1, 2, 3). Let vi(t, x1) = ∫∫uidx2dx3 (i = 1, 2 is enough) and set w(t, x1) = ∫∫x2u1dx2dx3. One obtains a system of 3 differential equations for v1, v2, and w to which the spectral techniques of inverse scattering theory are applied as in [25]. The inverse problems for the uncoupled vi can then be solved to produce 2 functions A1 and A2 involving (Q, λ, μ) as functions of “bound” variables y1 and y2 containing (Q, λ, μ), between which a relation then is determined. Analysis of the coupled equation for w then leads to a Fredholm integral equation whose solution provides an additional relation between (Q, λ, μ) from which (Q, λ, μ) can be determined as functions of x1. The integral equation is reduced to a Volterra type equation by results and techniques of transmutation and then solved by a modification of standard techniques. A number of features and results of independent mathematical interest arise from the transmutation theory.

Notes: The buckling of a beam or a plate which is subject to obstacles is typical for the variational inequalities that are considered here. Birfurcation is known to occur from the first eigenvalue of the linearized problem. For a discretization the bifurcation point and the bifurcating branches may be obtained by solving a constrained optimization problem. An algorithm is proposed and its convergence is proved. The buckling of a clamped beam subject to point obstacles is considered in the continuous case and some numerical results for this problem are presented.

Notes: Semilinear elliptic systems of partial differential equations related to ecology are studied, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Monotone sequences of functions which satisfy scalar equations are constructed so that they will converge to upper and lower bounds for the solutions of the systems. In case a related system has a unique positive solution, then these sequences will converge to the solution of the original system. Applications of the monotone sequences to uniqueness and stability are also given.

Notes: We consider two vibration problems containing a small parameter → 0: a) Vibration of an elastic, slightly compressible body, and b) acoustic vibration of a slightly viscous compressible barotropic fluid in a vessel. The asymptotics of eigenvalues for problem a) is studied by using a uniformly convergent expansion of the stiff type. After a re-scaling of the spectral parameter, the problem b) reduces to an analogous problem, and we prove that, as ε → 0, infinitely many eigenvalues converge to 0 (which is an eigenvalue of infinite multiplicity of the corresponding inviscid acoustic problem).

Notes: This paper is concerned with spline methods in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space consisting of functions defined and harmonic in the outer space of a regular surface (e.g. sphere, ellipsoid, telluroid, geoid, (regularized) earth's surface). Spline methods are used to solve interpolation and smoothing problems with respect to a (fundamental) system of linear functional giving information about earth's gravity field. Best approximations to linear functionals are discussed. The spline of interpolation is characterized as the spline of best approximation in the sense of an appropriate (energy) norm.

Notes: We consider an unbounded, elastic non homogeneous material with periodic structure. It is shown that the solution of the equations of motion can be expanded in eigenfunctions of periodic operators. The Bloch expansion is used to prove that when the wave-length is long compared to the period of the structure (related to a small parameter ε), the first term of the exact solution expansion, in powers of ε, is the solution of the equations obtained in homogenization theory. The case of a long memory linear viscoelastic material is then studied.

Notes: Approximation in least squares by Galerkin's method leads to a consideration of strongly minimal systems. Theorems are derived which permit the recognition of systems which are not strongly minimal from the characteristics of the elements themselves. Normalised systems cannot be strongly minimal without their eigenvalues being bounded above.Speared systems, which have desirable properties, are introduced and their main features determined. Convergence earmarks and error bounds are exposed.A new definition of stability, which is self-checking in a computation, is suggested and its attributes delineated. The extension of the theory to equations involving positive-definite operators is mentioned.

Notes: Classical theorems about matrices with non-negative elements can be generalized for application in eigenvalue problems of integro-differential form appearing in the description of stationary particle transport. Notes: The problem of plasma confinement in a Tokomak machine has recently attracted considerable mathematical attention. In the present article, gradient bounds for the solution are obtained through the use of differential inequalities and the Hopf maximum principle. These estimates, which take slightly different forms in the plasma and vacuum regions, become exact in the one-dimensional case. An estimate is also given for the distance from the boundary of the interior point where the maximum of the solution is attained.

Notes: The change of variable for the temperature Θ in the one-phase Stefan problem leads to the evolution inequality, (ut - Δu - f)(v - u) ≥ 0 for all regular v ≥ 0, where u ≥ 0 is required. This inequality is to hold over a space-time domain D = Ω × (0, T) with a Dirichlet boundary condition imposed on ∂ Ω × (0, T) and a zero initial condition. The free boundary phase interface is given in one space dimension by The fully implicit divided difference scheme leads to a sequence of elliptic variational inequalities for {um}. The sequence {um} may be interpolated linearly in t to obtain an approximation UΔt of u. The following results are obtained in this paper: (i) a two-sided weak maximum principle for um - um-1 in N space dimensions, hence the free boundary approximation for N = 1, is a monotone increasing step function; (ii) the uniform convergence of UΔt and ∇UΔt, to u and ∇u, respectively, on D; (iii) the uniform convergence to the Hölder continuous, monotone increasing free boundary x on [0, T] of the piecewise linear sequence xΔt, where xΔt interpolates xΔt, in one space dimension; (iv) a constructive existence proof for u and x in prescribed regularity classes.

Notes: Quasilinear transmission problems of both the elliptic and pseudoparabolic type with differential operators in divergence form simulating oxygen transport in capillary and tissue are investigated. Using recent methods of the theory of pseudomonotone operators and singular perturbations (elliptic regularization) the existence of weak solutions for both problems has been proven. Moreover, the weak solution of the elliptic problem proves to be a solution in the classical sense. Finally, at most one classical solution of a slightly modified pseudoparabolic problem exists.

Notes: The scattered field produced by a rotating or vibrating object in the presence of a time harmonic plane wave is usually approximated by a time dependent sequence of stationary fields, called a quasi stationary field. Recently the mathematical theory of scattering of scalar fields of Lax and Phillips has been extended to cover moving bodies. Within this framework the quasi stationary approximation is shown to be valid in each sphere of finite radius which contains the body. Far fields for the exact field and the quasi stationary field are defined and the difference is estimated in terms of a small parameter.

Notes: For Hill's equation the lowest eigenvalue a0 of the boundary value problem y(x + 1) = y(x) is considered. Introducing Lp norms of the function f(x), lower bounds for a0 which depend only on this norm are derived for p = 1,2 and ∞ by solving a variational principle. For these lower bounds analytical expressions are obtained. The quality of the approximations thus obtained is discussed for Mathieu's equation and an application in magnetohydrodynamics is considered.

Notes: In this paper we derive a uniformly valid asymptotic approximation of the periodic solution of a self-excited system given by the differential equation and β1,β2, are positive constants. By uniformly valid asymptotic approximation we mean that no secular terms are present. Our procedure makes use of a nonlinear change of independent variable that transforms the problem from one in which the discontinuities are ∊ dependent to one in which the discontinuities are ∊ independent. We obtain an asymptotic approximation up to order ∊ of the periodic solution and an asymptotic approximation up to order ∊2 of the period. Some comparisons between our asymptotic results and numerically derived results are given. Application of our technique to other examples of self-excited systems is discussed. The equation is investigated in detail.

Notes: The paper starts with a short survey of the treatment of initial-boundary-value problems in temperature-free linear elasticity with unisotropic media. The main part of the paper is concerned with exterior initial-boundary-value problems in thermoelasticity. In this case the underlying differential operator A is no longer selfadjoint. Thus the spectrum of A has to be discussed. In 2.1 it is shown that all λ with Re λ 〈 0 belong to the resolvent set. In 2.2 the case G = R3 with homogeneous isotropic media is considered. Let Λ be the essential spectrum in this case. In 2.3 Λ depending on the thermic coupling parameter is discussed. 2.4 treats the spectrum of A assuming the medium to be homogeneous and isotrop outside a large ball. In this case Λ is the essential spectrum for A too. Radiation conditions are formulated. Finally 2.5 presents a short treatment of the time dependent case with Laplace-transformation.

Notes: We develop an abstract theory of geometric regularity conditions for subsets of normed linear spaces, of the type which occurs in the theory of Sobolev spaces (cone conditions, …). The theory is to systematize the diversity of existing conditions, to replace complicated conditions by simpler ones, and to clarify the interplay between different conditions. Our main result is a very general decomposition theorem.

Notes: We describe three optimal algorithms for the reconstruction of a function in R2 from a finite number of line or strip integrals: Optimal recovery, Bayes estimate, Tikhonov-Phillips method. In the case of a rotationally invariant scanning geometry we show that the resulting linear system is a block-cyclic convolution. This observation leads to algorithms which are roughly as efficient as filtered backprojection which is one of the standard methods. The algorithms can be applied to the case of hollow and truncated projections. Numerical examples are given.

Notes: The aim of this work is to give theoretical justification of several types of finite element approximations to the initial-boundary value problems of first order linear hyperbolic equations. Our approximate scheme is obtained by the piecewise linear continuous finite element method for space variable, x, and the Euler type step by step integration method for time variable, t. An artificial viscosity technique, up-stream type methods are considered within the frame work of L2-theory. The convergence and the error estimate of the approximate solutions to the true one are discussed.

Notes: In this paper we study the application of boundary integral equation methods for the solution of the third, or Robin, boundary value problem for the exterior Helmholtz equation. In contrast to earlier work, the boundary value problem is interpreted here in a weak sense which allows data to be specified in L∞ (∂D), ∂D being the boundary of the exterior domain which we assume to be Lyapunov of index 1. For this exterior boundary value problem, we employ Green's theorem to derive a pair of boundary integral equations which have a unique simultaneous solution. We then show that this solution yields a solution of the original exterior boundary value problem.

Notes: The stability, convergence, and consistency properties of the steady-state multigroup model are investigated for submultiplying slab media. These concepts are defined in a Banach space setting in which the norm of the angular flux is the collision density integrated over phase space. It is shown that the multigroup approximations are stable and are both consistent with, and convergent to, the transport equation under the conditions that the maximum fluctuations in the total cross section and in the expected number of secondary particles, arising from each energy level, tend to zero as the energy mesh becomes finer. A concluding discussion deals with pathologies of the multigroup approximation for situations in which these fluctuations do not tend to zero as the norms of the energy partitions. The results in this paper complement the time-dependent results of Belleni-Morante and Busoni for isotropic slabs and the results of Nelson for steady-state rod media.

Notes: A boundary value problem is considered for an equation of mixed type in a rectangle. An energy method is used to prove uniqueness for appropriate boundary conditions. Similar considerations for the adjoint problem allow one to prove the existence of a generalized solution to the problem. It is also shown that the energy method leads naturally to a finite element method. The method is described for a special case and convergence is shown for the resulting numerical procedure.

Notes: We consider acoustic waves in domains with boundaries, coinciding with two parallel planes outside a sufficiently large sphere. Several results on spectral properties of the Laplace operator in such domains are derived and used to prove uniqueness and existence of a solution of the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the reduced wave equation under additional restrictions. In particular, a class of domains is described for which no eigenvalues are present.

These bounds, depending only on the diameter L of the domain G and on the maximum norm M of the coefficients a, b, are optimal. They are always positive and thus the spectrum is bounded away from the imaginary axis. This result is then used to prove an “anti-dynamo theorem” for magnetic fields with plane symmetry in the case of a compressible steady flow surrounded by a perfect conductor.

Notes: We consider solutions z of the Cauchy-problem for hyperbolic Euler-Lagrange equations derived from a general Lagrangian f(x, y, z; zx, zy) in two independent variables x, y. z is supposed to be an extremal of the corresponding variational problem. Visualizing z as a surface in R3 we give a geometric interpretation of Lewy's well-known characteristic approximation scheme for the numerical solution of second order hyperbolic equations by approximating z via a polyhedral construction built up from subunits which consist of two characteristic triangles having one side in common but lying on different planes in R3. Utilizing ideas from Cartan-geometry one can (in an appropriate sense) introduce the “mean curvature” of these subunits and it is seen that this curvature vanishes (up to terms of higher order). That is a highly plausible result for the polyhedral approximation of “minimal surfaces”.

Notes: For singularly perturbed one-dimensional convection-diffusion equations, finite element approximations are constructed based on a so-called approximate symmetrization of the given unsymmetric problem. Local a-posteriori error estimates are established with respect to an appropriate energy norm where the bounds are proved to be realistic. The local bounds, called error indicators, provide a basis for a self-adaptive mesh refinement. For a model problem numerical results are presented showing that the adaptive method detects and resolves the boundary layer.

Notes: The paper gives a proof, valid for a large class of bounded domains, of the following compactness statements: Let G be a bounded domain, β be a tensor-valued function on G satisfying certain restrictions, and let {n} be a sequence of vector-valued functions on G where the L2-norms of {n}, {curl n}, and {div(β n)} are bounded, and where all n either satisfy x n = 0 or (β Fn) = 0 at the boundary ∂G of G ( = normal to ∂G): then {n} has a L2-convergent subsequence. The first boundary condition is satisfied by electric fields, the second one by magnetic fields at a perfectly conducting boundary ∂G if β is interpreted as electric dielectricity ∊ or as magnetic permeability μ, respectively. These compactness statements are essential for the application of abstract scattering theory to the boundary value problem for Maxwell's equations.

Notes: The above equation has some remarkable properties. In general a global solution exists in a weak sense only, and this solution is not reversible in time. Furthermore it is known, that the solutions for different initial values can coincide for all t ≥ t0 〉 0, and the set of the initial values with this property is convex. Conditions assuring that this set contains only one element are given. This means a weak form of time-reversibility.As a global solution exists only in the weak sense, the classical question concerning dependence of the solution on the initial values needs some modification. This problem is dealt with in suitable L1-norms. It is shown, that the L1-norm of the difference of two weak solutions with respect to the space variable does not increase in time.

Notes: Nonsymmetric Hartmann flow through a rectangular duct is investigated for thin duct walls with, generally, unequal but finite conductivities. A high Hartmann number is adopted. Consistent with known phenomena, both Hartmann layers transverse to the applied magnetic field are assumed to be separated from the two side boundary layers by four corner regions plus four inner corner regions. The method of singular perturbations and matched asymptotic expansions is applied to the coupled system. The equations governing the core and Hartmann layers are first partially resolved for leading terms. This is then followed by tackling equations governing one side layer and two adjacent corner regions. The latters' incorporation secures, for the former, only those boundary conditions that are compatible along the transverse walls. Both corner regions are denied access to non-required boundary conditions along the neighbouring side wall by the adjoining inner corner regions. However, the latters' boundary value problems need not be tackled for the acquirement of only dominant terms beyond all four inner corner regions. The complementary side layer and associated corners are accounted for by a non-symmetric reflection principle. Results reveal that a difference between conductivities in the transverse walls together with at least one finitely conducting side wall impart to disturbances within the core and Hartmann layers (i) a nontrivial dependence on the transverse coordinate relative to the magnetic field and flow in addition to the (usual) dependence on the field aligned coordinate,(ii) a dependence on side wall parameters in addition to the dependence on transverse wall parameters.Applications to related situations are considered. These include the case for a perfectly conducting lower wall, a finitely conducting upper wall, and equally and finitely conducting side walls.

Notes: A study and the solution of an extension of the classical Sommerfeld half-plane problem which leads to a pair of integral equations of the Wiener-Hopf type is given. The method of solution is function theoretic in character and employs a combination of the ideas of Wiener and Hopf and Carleman.

    Notes: We study the problem \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{*{20}c} { - \Delta u = \lambda H({\rm u - 1)}} & {{\rm in }\Omega } \\ {u = g} & {{\rm in }\partial \Omega } \\ \end{array} $$\end{document}(H is the Heaviside unit step function) in spherical domains Ω of arbitrary dimension. When g = 0, there are two branches of radial solutions; for small nonzero g there are solutions near the corresponding radial solution. Moreover, the set where μ = 1 is in all cases an analytic hypersurface.
