Notes: Model Calculations on the Counterion Effect in the Cationic Polymerization; Decay of the Mixed Halogenoantimonates SbCl5Br- and SbClBr5-The decay of the halogenoantimonates SbCl5Br- and SbClBr5- according to SbCl5Br- → SbCl5 + Br- resp. SbCl4Br + Cl- and SbClBr5- → SbBr5 + Cl- resp. SbClBr4 + Br- has been investigated by the quantum-chemical CNDO/2 method including geometry optimization. The calculations show that the dissociation of the Sb—Cl bond needs more energy (7,8 kcal/mol) than the dissociation of the Sb—Br bond.Dissociation of the complex anions is facilitated with increasing Br content.

Notes: A theoretical and experimental analysis of self-inducting turbo aerator performance was carried out based on the theory of water jet injector operation. It was shown that the aerator's injection coefficient is completely determined by only two dimensionless groups, CH and EuG, between which there is a single valued dependence on whose basis generalization of experimental data is possible. An analytical expression for the optimality criterion or aerator performance index, accounting for aerator gas capacity, power consumption, and submergence, has been obtained in terms of CH and EuG with only one adjustable parameter. From the above two dependencies, a methodology was developed for determining optimal operating conditions, by means of which all the data necessary for the optimal design can be obtained from the results of bench scale experiment.

Description / Table of Contents: The particle size distribution in latices obtained in emulsion polymerization of monomers having different polarity in the presence of ionogenic and non-ionogenic emulsifiers has been investigated. The formation of latex particles and their polydispersity is caused by adsorption processes at the phase interface. The period of time required for achieving the critical value of unsaturated surface per unit volume of the system is suggested to be the main factor responsible for the shape of the particle size distribution.

Notes: A technique for adhesion of fine particles (ca. 5 μ) of the 405 white diatomaceous support on the inner wall of glass tube with organic glue [poly (diethylaminoethyl methacrylate) acetate] is described. The coated tube was drawn to capillary column by using a machine designed according to Desty's. The capillary column was then coated with stationary phase (such as squaiane, QF-1, Dexsil 300, PEG 20 M, OV-1, SE 30 and etc.) by the conventional dynamic or static method. This preparation method has proved easy to duplicate and is simple. The coating efficiency (UTE %) is within 60-90. The theoretical plate number per meter of an SE 30 column is about 4000, and per meter of a PEG 20 M column is about 2500. The columns thus prepared have been successfully used to analyze petroleum hydrocarbons, essential oils, petrochemicals, pheromone, steroid metabolites and others.

Notes: Pressure-volume-temperature relationships of three low-density polyethylenes are reported in the temperature range of 30°-225°C and in the pressure range of 0-2000 kg/cm2. The same materials had previously been studied by the IUPAC Working Party on Structure and Properties of Commercial Polymers with regard to basic characterization, melt rheology, processing, and end use properties. They were found to be remarkably equal in basic parameters and in some of the melt rheology, but differences among the three samples were found in other rheological properties and in the processing and end use properties of blown film. We find the PVT relationships of these three samples to be practically identical. A numerical equation of state based on the Tait equation is established. It reproduces the measured specific volume data of the melts to better than 0.002 cm3/g.

Notes: Experimental data on the dependence of the specific volume on temperature and pressure (PVT data) to 2000 kg/cm2 of isotactic polypropylene and isotactic poly(butene-1) are reported and discussed. The temperature range covered is 30-297°C for polypropylene and 30-246°C for poly(butene-1), thus encompassing the solid and molten states of both materials. An empirical equation of state based on the Tait equation can be fitted to the melt data of both materials. The coefficients reported reproduce the measured specific volumes with a standard deviation of less than 0.001 cm3/g.

Notes: Recent investigations of the emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate report a variable behavior. The reaction has been reported to exhibit a half-order rate dependence and no particle number dependence on the initiator level, or a first-order dependence for both the reaction rate and particle number on the initiator concentration, or some behavior between these two extremes. While two recent models have attempted to account for the changes in the reaction rate dependence by postulating either an aqueous phase or a polymer phase termination, no adequate explanation of the particle number behavior has been given, nor has a single model been suggested that agrees with all of the experimental data. This investigation confirms the results of previous investigators and develops an empirical model for the particle number, taking into account the effects of the initiator level, emulsifier level and alkyl chain length, temperature, and ionic strength on the particle number. This particle number model, used with a polymer phase termination reaction model, yields a polymerization rate expression which agrees with all previous data.
