Description: Modifications to prior theory yield expressions for the frequency response and equivalent lumped elements of a condenser microphone in terms of its fundamental geometrical and material properties. Results of the analysis show excellent agreement with experimental data taken on B&K pressure microphone types 4134 and 4146.

Description: Wake flow measurements were conducted with a mobile laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV). The measurements included surveys of aircraft wake vortices behind a B-747 aircraft, aircraft carrier wake measurements from aboard the U.S.S. Nimitz, and tower wake measurements for a 100 kW wind turbine. Results of these tests demonstrated that a mobile ground-based LDV is a versatile and useful tool for the measurement of full-scale three-dimensional wake flows. The potential is demonstrated for utilization of this system to study complex wakes for a variety of applications.

Description: A technique for particle size measurement by using Laser Doppler Anemometry is discussed. An additional gate photomultiplier has been introduced at right angles to the optical axis in order to select only those particles passing through the central region of the measurement control volume. Particle sizing measurements have been made in sprays of glass particles using the modified Laser Anemometry system. Measurements in fuel sprays are also reported and compared with the results obtained by a photographic technique. The application of the particle sizing technique to opaque particles is investigated and suitable optical arrangements are suggested. Light scattering characteristics of Laser Anemometry systems for different optical geometries are calculated to select the optimum optical arrangement for the particle sizing measurements.

Description: A device for generating burst signals is reported that can be used to determine whether or not a laser Doppler velocimeter is operating properly. A high frequency signal which corresponds to the information frequency of the laser Doppler velocimeter is modulated by a low frequency signal to provide an envelope for the high frequency signal. The high frequency signal is modulated by any modulator means such as, for example, an analog multiplier. The low frequency signal is added to the modulated signal to provide pedestals for the resulting series of burst pulses. The means are provided for selecting different combinations of these burst signals. Also means are provided for making the burst signals asymmetrical as desired. In addition, means are provided for varying the frequencies, and amplitudes of the information, envelope and pedestal frequency signals in the burst signals.

Description: A V/STOL tunnel study was performed to determine the effects of spanwise blowing on longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a model using a vectored-over-wing powered lift concept. The effects of spanwise nozzle throat area, internal and external nozzle geometry, and vertical and axial location were investigated. These effects were studied at a Mach number of 0.186 over an angle-of-attack range from 14 deg to 40 deg. A high pressure air system was used to provide jet-exhaust simulation. Engine nozzle pressure ratio was varied from 1.0 (jet off) to approximately 3.75.

Description: Some contemplated improvements on the Lixiscope are described. These can be divided roughly into two categories: those which are well within existing technology, and thus can be implemented immediately; and those which are more at the state-of-the-art level, and which are directly related to applications in X-ray and gamma ray imaging in astronomy.

Description: Equations for analyzing the potential gust-induced overspeed tendency of helicopter rotors are presented. A parametric analysis was also carried out to illustrate the sensitivity of rotor angular acceleration to changes in rotor lift, propulsive force, tip speed, and forward velocity.

Description: An analytical study was conducted to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of two helicopter rotor airfoils. Documentation of the predictive process covers the development of empirical factors used in conjunction with computer programs for airfoil analysis. Tables of lift, drag, and pitching-moment coefficient for each airfoil were prepared for two dimensional, steady flow conditions at Mach numbers from 0.3 to 0.9 and Reynolds numbers of 7,700,000 to 23,000,000, respectively.

Description: A potential flow routine and a viscous boundary layer routine have been combined into a single routine for estimating the flow in and around subsonic inlets. In this combined routine, the viscous flow solution about the inlet body is obtained by adding the viscous displacement thickness to the inlet geometry. Combination of the two flow solutions has resulted in cost savings, both in preparation time and in computer time. This routine is a useful tool in optimizing lip shapes for V/STOL inlets. The method of combining the routine, comparison with NASA test data, and utilization of the routine for V/STOL inlet design are presented.
