    Description: This chapter explores how bottom-up and top-down language policies in the Gulf countries interact with wider language ideologies and discourses related to globalization, internationalization of higher education, and neoliberalism. Drawing on Irving and Gal’s theories of semiotic formation of language ideologies and Bourdieu’s theory of language and symbolic power, the chapter critically examines the interrelatedness of language ideologies, symbolic power and policies surrounding Arabic and English and resultant effects on linguistic identities. The chapter explores how the languages Arabic and English are often symbolically polarized despite the fact that in everyday practice, languages are interwoven through translingual practice. The chapter suggests concrete ways in which to bridge this ideological divide through glocalization and the legitimizing of translingual practice in multiple domains, including English-medium education.

    Description: Los líderes lingüísticos son las personas que llevan la delantera en la dirección adoptada por la expansión de unas variantes frente a otras. Tales individuos tienen un papel central en el desarrollo de la vida cotidiana. Son, al parecer agentes dinámicos en sus propios grupos, al tiempo que enlaces con la comunidad local. Los líderes lingúísticos lo son, entre otras razones, porque sirven de modelo a los demás hablantes. Es cierto que la sociolingüística urbana ha arrojado una gran cantidad de luz sobre los aspectos sociales más generales de las comunidades lingüísticas, y sobre categorías como la generación o la clase social. Falta mucho por hacer, en cambio en el terreno microsocial. Es poco lo que se sabemos de los grupos intermedios, responsables de buena parte del tejido comunitario, como es el caso de diferentes agrupaciones, clubes o gremios, o el de entornos como mercados, escuelas u hospitales, o de asociaciones vecinales o comerciales. El papel de la interacción cara a cara en la difusión de patrones sociolingüisticos es cuestión que seguramente se debatirá por mucho tiempo. Los intercambios directos tienen un cometido fundamental, a través de fenómenos como la acomodación, para redistribuir la variación y consolidarlos cambios lingüísticos.

    Description: Language has a salient role of indicating group membership and is considered a symbol of different social identities. Within the Arabic language, variation across countries and regions create multiple identities, and the classification of Arabic into Standard Arabic (SA) and dialects has long created controversial positions about issues of belonging and intelligibility. This chapter explores representations of linguistic identities in the popular Arabic-medium television series Khawaja Abdulqader. The chapter uses discourse analysis (DA) to explore how the main character of the drama utilizes linguistic resources to reveal multiple identities of a non-Arab who speaks Arabic as a foreign language. Five extracts from the series are analysed with a focus on phonological and morphological features of three Arabic variations: Standard Arabic, Sudanese Dialect and Egyptian dialect. The chapter sheds light on the differences and similarities between the dialects as well as comparing these dialects with Gulf varieties such as the Emirati dialect. Based on the findings, the chapter argues that linguistic features and variation seen in the series unify rather than distance Arabic-speakers’ identities and cultural belongingness.

    Description: Scrutinizing Chinese literary field from the perspective of new censorship theories (Burt, 1994; Holquist, 1994; Post, 1998; Butler, 1998), this chapter describes mechanisms and provides deeper insights into ideological objectives of contemporary Chinese censorship, which can be summed up by notions of maintaining stability (维稳) and social harmony (社会和谐). Within the frame of Hockx’s (1999) adaptation of Bordieu’s (1992) concept of literary field for modern Chinese literature, the present study highlights nodal points of continuity in the official standpoints and requirements on literature and arts despite turbulent changes in both politics and society in the PRC during the last 70 years. It stresses the persisting importance of ‘political capital’ that Hockx linked to ‘[writers’] ability to deal with the concept of people.’ The original Party slogan to ‘serve the people,’ repeatedly emphasized by present president Xi Jinping, still applies to each segment of the Chinese literary field, from writers through editors to publishers and sellers, as the prominent writer Yan Lianke (2016) has pointed out by describing the major shift from ‘hard censorship’ to a ‘soft’ one, which requires ‘self-monitoring’ motivated by ‘the seduction of power, fame and influence rather than being a product of fear and desperation.’ This shift marks a notable transformation of the original notion of literature and arts as the main tools of propaganda formulated by Mao in Yan’an in 1942. The centralized, state-controlled literary establishment was gradually abolished during the post-Mao era, nevertheless, the basic principles in the official Party discourse remain and literature should still to some extent serve to extraliterary objectives. The persisting tension between writers’ (critical) commitment to ‘reality’ and the officially formulated aims of literary creation propelled by collision between the symbolic and the political capitals, has been since the 1990s diluted by growing potential of the economic capital and massive influence of popular culture that has (once again) become a targeted tool for promoting the official ideology and its master narratives. Nevertheless, as this chapter argues, the official literary system has successfully adapted to the new conditions and maintained effective control over the literary field in China.

    Description: En los últimos años la adquisición del lenguaje ha estado en el centro del interés de los estudios de la lingüística mexicana. Los hallazgos sobre la adquisición y desarrollo del español empiezan a oírse con voz propia y fuerte. Precisamente, en este libro, el habla de niños entre dos y nueve años, hablantes de español mexicano, es el personaje principal. Su habla es atravesada por diferentes miradas teóricas, métodos y tipos de análisis para dar cuenta de algún nivel de estructuración: se va de lo fonético a lo pragmático pasando por lo sintáctico y lo semántico en búsqueda de respuestas a las preguntas nucleares que vertebran el libro ¿cuáles son los rasgos distintivos en diversos momentos de desarrollo?, ¿hay diferencias significativas en la producción?, ¿en qué nivel y de qué manera se dan? Los resultados apuntan hacia un habla infantil en movimiento que cambia, construyéndose dentro de la compleja tríada lingüística, cognoscitiva y social que le da vida.

Con agudeza y meticulosidad, el autor traspasa el tiempo y observa que desde el siglo XVI existe un problema que aún hoy en día no parece encontrar salida coherente para una nación unificada. La unidad, la identidad, la nacionalidad, el plurilingüismo son los finos hilos que se entretejen en una compleja red de posturas contradictorias y oscilantes entre dos polos: el español o lenguas indígenas. Vieja polémica esta que paradójicamente se urde mucho tiempo antes del encuentro de dos lenguas imperiales: el náhuatl y el español; y que después se reproduce en nuevos moldes surgidos de la vecindad del español con el inglés.

    Description: La vida académica de Luis Fernando Lara se ha tejido entre la teoría lingüística, la práctica lexicográfica y la crítica a las políticas lingüísticas aplicadas al español, así como a las lenguas indoamericanas. Su proyecto pionero de un diccionario integral del español de México ha ofrecido una alternativa a la lexicografía contrastiva tradicional. Grounded in a complexity perspective, the author argues that emotions need to be studied as they are dynamically experienced and understood in all of their multidimensional colors by individuals (in interaction).     Description: A growing number of countries are implementing school initiatives aimed at developing students’ knowledge of multiple languages to help them thrive in a globalized world. Research indicates that learning languages can be made more effective if teachers draw on their own and their students’ entire language repertoires during lessons, yet few studies have systematically investigated the extent to which language teachers are willing and able to do this. This chapter reports the findings from a mixed-methods study on secondary school teachers of Arabic, English, and French based in the UAE that explored their teaching practices using an ecological perspective. Drawing upon data collected via unstructured interviews, the study’s findings revealed common themes among the participants vis-à-vis their ability and willingness to draw on their and their students’ multilingualism as a pedagogical resource. The chapter concludes by offering recommendations for how schools and policymakers can implement specific measures to help teachers and students fully realize their multilingual potential.

The book’s second part (Chapters 4-6) explores media representations of Gulf linguistic identities through the mediums of social media, modern fiction, and television drama. The focus of the book’s third part (Chapters 7-9) looks at how a wide range of linguistic phenomena, situated in broader social movements, have changed over time. Transitions discussed include an analysis of Gulf expatriates’ ambivalent identities, changing sociolinguistic landscapes during the Coronavirus pandemic, and a move away from culturally biased international English tests toward locally produced assessments. The final part of the book draws readers’ attention to English-medium instruction contexts in the Gulf and discusses translanguaging for transformation, multilingual teacher identities, and emotions of students studying in English-medium universities.

    Description: The linguistic ecology of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is characterized by diversity. While effective communication in multilingual contexts is important during ordinary times, it becomes especially vital during a crisis such as the Coronavirus pandemic. This chapter explores linguistic inclusion and exclusion on Abu Dhabi Coronavirus safety signage. An ethnographic approach to linguistic landscaping is taken through the analysis of languages and semiotic resources used on signage in community and leisure spaces. Findings revealed a prevalence of monolingual and bilingual signage which favoured the nation’s official language, Arabic, and the nation’s de facto lingua franca, English. Whereas examples of effective trilingual signage were found, these were the exception rather than the norm. The chapter argues that greater linguistic inclusion of languages other than English and Arabic is needed to reflect Abu Dhabi’s multilingual ecology and ensure safety messages are more accessible. Raising awareness of linguistic diversity in society as well as implementing translation drives are suggested as ways to promote greater inclusion of third languages on signage during the pandemic period and beyond, as well as supporting a greater sense of belonging for linguistic minorities.
