CMIP5 is meant to provide a framework for coordinated climate change experiments for the next five years and thus includes simulations for assessment in the AR5 as well as others that extend beyond the AR5. 7.4 historicalExt (7.4 Historical Extension) - Version 1: Extend the CMIP5 historical runs to the near-present (as we have for AMIP), rather than ending them in 2005. Simulations extended to at least the end of 2012 using some estimate of recent and future forcing. Groups are free to use whatever concentrations, solar forcing, SO2 emissions etc. they want to use in extending these runs. It is recommended that if an ensemble of "all-forcings" historical simulations have been run, then *each* member of the ensemble should be carried to the end of 2012. If some other forcing is used or if the run is an RCP run that is truncated after a few years, then the run should be considered a "historical extension" experiment with its output placed in a directory named historicalExt. For these historicalExt experiments, the ensemble member (designated by the "rip" value appearing in the filename and recorded as netCDF global attributes) will be identical to the historical run it extends. Beschreibung: These are maps of artificial night sky radiance that were produced by the Light Pollution Science and Technology Institute (ISTIL), and described in the paper "The New World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness" (Falchi et al. 2016).The data are stored in a 2.9 Gb geotiff file, on a 30 arcsecond grid. The map reports simulated zenith radiance data in [mcd/m^2]. The map is based on data from the VIIRS Day Night Band (DNB, MIller et al. 2013), which has been propagated through the atmosphere using the radiative transfer code reported in (Cinzano and Falchi, 2012). The upward emission function and the radiance calibration were obtained using data from Sky Quality Meters (including data from Duriscoe et al. 2007; Falchi 2010; Kyba et al 2013, 2015 and Zamorano et al. 2016).Note that the maps report artificial light only! The zenith radiance from natural sources such as stars and the Milky Way are not included, and must be added in order to match the data that would be obtained from an actual outdoor measurement.A kmz file for quick view of the data is also provided. Access to the FTP site to download the data can be requested via the data request form on the landing page.Version History:13 November 2019: change of the licence to CC BY NC 4.0 (after end of embargo period).

Beschreibung: Artificial lights raise the night sky luminance, creating the most visible effect of light pollution, artificial sky glow. Despite the increasing interest among scientists in fields such as ecology, astronomy, healthcare, land use planning, light pollution lacks a current quantification of its magnitude on a global scale. To overcome this, here we present the World atlas of the artificial sky luminance, computed with our light pollution propagation software using new high resolution satellite data and new precision sky brightness measurements. This atlas shows that more than 80% of the World and more than 99% of the U.S.A. and Europe populations live under light polluted skies. The Milky Way is hidden for more than one third of humanity, including 60% of Europeans and nearly 80% of North Americans. Moreover, 23% of World's lands between 75°N and 60°S, 88% of Europe and almost half of U.S.A. experience light polluted nights.

Beschreibung: The 2nd Data Management Workshop was held at the University of Cologne in November 2014. It was organized within the research data management activities of two large interdisciplinary research projects both funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Both projects actively supported the workshop. The Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio 32 ‘Patterns in Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Systems: Monitoring, Modelling and Data Assimilation’ involves scientist from the fields of meteorology, hydrology, geography, geophysics, soil sciences and mathematics. The CRC806 ‘Our Way to Europe: Culture-Environment Interaction and Human Mobility in the Late Quaternary’ integrates scientists from the disciplines of prehistoric archaeology, geology, geography, geophysics and soil sciences. Organizing research data management of such diverse disciplines which are distributed over several universities and research centers faces several problems and challenges. Consequently, the main focus of the 2nd Data Management Workshop was to discuss solutions and approaches for interdisciplinary and disciplinary data management with other colleagues and experts of the field. The publication of the Special Issue on ‘Research Data Management’ of the ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information (ISSN 2220-9964) emerged in the context of this workshop.

Beschreibung: The federal state of Baden-Württemberg wants to offer scientists the best conditions for research. Against the backdrop of the ever-increasing importance of data and information the bwFDM-Communities project is tasked to develop recommendations that shall enable scientists in our federal state to process and use data without barriers. In order to achieve this objective, we engage an active dialogue with all university research groups in Baden-Württemberg (~3000). Next to identifying and advertising best-practice solutions, this project is supposed to gather information on how federal IT support needs to be expanded in order to meet the increasing demands of future research. As this is an ongoing project there may be further results in time, but some early conclusions can be drawn: Scientists want clear-cut requirements and responsibilities for data management and are willing to share their data if there is a proper appreciation model for data publication. Additionally, a lot of scientists complain about too strict law regulations regarding copyright and need better information about available RDM support, partners and opportunities. Final conclusions and recommendations can only be given in the further course of the project, but we are confident that our final recommendations will help the scientists in Baden-Württemberg.

Beschreibung: This paper introduces the CRC/TR32 database (TR32DB), a research data management system developed within the multidisciplinary research project Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio 32 (CRC/TR32) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The aim of the TR32DB is to support collative research within the whole project by providing data storage, backup, archive, documentation, publication and also sharing services. The entire system is self-developed according to the requirements of the funding agency, the user and project demands, as well as according to recent principles and standards. The TR32DB system architecture is basically a combination of data storage (file management), database and web-interface. In addition, the TR32DB Metadata Schema was designed and implemented to describe all project data with accurate metadata. A user-friendly multi-level approach was chosen to cover the requirements of all data stored in the TR32DB with appropriate metadata.

The overall goal of the study was to map plant species shift along environmental gradients relating spectral information to the floristic composition. Reference plots of 1 or 2 m² size were thereby located in typical plant communities as well as in transition zones affected by species shift due to management measures such as grazing or shrub removal. In addition 17 field plots were analyzed with regard to soil horizon parameter (e.g. pH, grain size, carbonate content) in the year 2011. Soil types are further available on 51 auger probes.

Beschreibung: Reflectances measured in the visible frequency range at three channels of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) TERRA were used to derive the melt pond fraction on Arctic sea ice using an artificial neural network. This analysis was done on reflectances gridded onto a polar-stereographic grid tangent to the Earths' surface at 70 deg N with 500 m grid resolution. The reflectances used originate from the 8-day composite reflectances provided via https://wist.echo.nasa.gov/api/ as product: "MODIS surface Reflectance 8-Day L3 Global 500m SIN Grid V005". After gridding and flagging for clouds and other disturbances the artificial neural network was applied, providing fractions of three surface classes: 1) melt ponds, 2) sea ice and snow, and 3) open water at 500 m grid resolution. This data has been interpolated onto a similar polar-stereographic grid but with 12.5 km grid resolution. The data set offered here comprises several data layers: the melt pond fraction, its standard deviation, the open water fraction, and the number of individual valid grid cells with 500 m grid resolution included in each 12.5 km grid cell. In addition, in three separate data layers melt pond fraction, its standard deviation, and the open water fraction are given with those grid cells (with 12.5 km grid resolution) flagged as invalid where less than 90 % of the native 500 m grid resolution data indicate clear sky conditions. Valid for all these layers is, that grid cells with an open water fraction larger than 85 % have been flagged as invalid as well. The data set offered here is version 02 of the melt pond data set. The main difference to version 01 is a bias correction carried out to remove a positive bias in the melt pond fraction and in the open water fraction.

Beschreibung: Simulated 2D residual velocity fields in the inner German Bight were subjected to Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Residual currents were obtained from coastDat2 barotropic 2D simulations with the hydrodynamic model TRIM-NP V2.1.22 in barotropic 2D mode on a Cartesian grid (1.6km spatial resolution) stored on an hourly basis for the years 1948 - 2012 (doi:10.1594/WDCC/coastDat-2_TRIM-NP-2d) and later extended until August 2015. The present analysis refers to the period Jan 1958 - Aug 2015. The spatial domain considered is the region to the east of 6 degrees east and to the south of 55.6 degrees north. All grid nodes with a bathymetry of less than 10m were excluded. Residual velocities were calculated in two different ways: 1.) as 25h means, 2.) as monthly means. Both types of residual current data are available from * RESIDUAL_CURRENTS_195801_201508 The directory contains sub-directories for years and months. Daily residual currents for the 13th of September 1974, for instance, are stored in * RESIDUAL_CURRENTS_195801_201508/YEAR_1974/MONTH_09/TRIM2D_1974_09_13_means.nc while monthly mean residual currents for September 1974 are stored in: * RESIDUAL_CURRENTS_195801_201508/YEAR_1974/TRIM2D_1974_09_means.nc All current fields provided were interpolated from the original Cartesian model grid to a more convenient regular geographical grid (116x76 nodes). Mean residual currents are stored in: * mean_residual_currents.nc This data set contains residual velocities both on original Cartesian grid nodes and interpolated to the geographical grid. An example plot is provided: * mean_residual_currents.png For PCA, two residual velocity components from each of 12133 Cartesian grid nodes were combined into one data vector (length 2x12133), referring to 21061 daily or 692 monthly time levels. Results of two independent PCAs for either daily or monthly mean fields are stored in: * PCA_daily_residual_currents.nc * PCA_monthly_residual_currents.nc Files contain three leading Principal Components (PCs) and corresponding Emipirical Orthogonal Functions (EOFs). Again EOFs were also interpolated to a regular geographical grid. PC time series are also stored in plain ASCII format: * PCs_daily.txt * PCs_monthly.txt For monthly fields the number N of variables (N=2x12133) is much larger than the number T of time levels (T=692). Therefore, to reduce computational demands, the roles of time and space were formally interchanged. Having conducted the PCA the EOFs were then transformed back to the original spatial coordinates (cf. Section 12.2.6 in von Storch and Zwiers (1999), Statistical Analysis in Climate Research, Cambridge University Press). A much larger number of time levels made even this approach prohibitive for the full set of daily data. Therefore, PCAs were performed for six sub-periods (1958-1965, 1966-1975, 1976-1985, 1986-1995, 1996-2005, 2006-2015(Aug)) independently. EOFs obtained from these six sub-periods were then averaged to obtain EOFs representative for the whole period. Corresponding PCs were calculated by projecting daily fields onto these average EOFs. IMPORTANT: In contrast with PCA of monthly data, the PCA of daily data INVOLVES SOME APPROXIMATIONS! EOFs on the original nodes were normalized to have unit lengths. The following figures, * daily_EOF1.png * daily_EOF2.png * daily_EOF3.png show the first three EOFs obtained from daily data, assuming that corresponding PCs have the value of one standard deviation. The following two plots, * monthly_EOF1.png * monthly_EOF2.png show the leading EOFs for monthly mean data. EOF3 is omitted as it represents just a very small percentage of overall variance (1.7%).

Beschreibung: In August and September 2013, 17 shallow ocean bottom seismograph (S-OBS) stations and 8 land stations had been deployed on and around Muostakh Island (Laptev Sea, Russia) for a time period of 24 days. The specifically designed underwater recording equipment consists of a low-power digital recorder, a standard 4.5Hz 3-component geophone, and a battery pack. These components are enclosed in a watertight cylindrical container safe for operation down to 100m water depth. Land stations were also equipped with 4.5 Hz 1C-geophones as well as with batteries. All instruments recorded continuously with 200 samples per second (sps). The stations were deployed along two profiles covering a region of 8km x 8 km. The tilt of the geophone inside the S-OBS influences the sensor characteristics. Since the orientation and tilt at the ocean bottom was unknown, approximately every 24 hours a calibration signal (a sequence of step-functions) was applied to the sensors of the ocean stations. This might be used to recover the actual sensor characteristics (eigenfrequency and damping). The dataset contains 1) a info-folder with a) a README file; b) a file containing the times when calibration signals occurred (format: recorder_ID - date - time); c) the station table (ASCII; recorder_ID - latitude - longitude - (water)depth); d) a map of the region with the locations of the stations; 2) raw CUBE-formatted data; 3) converted mini-seed-formatted data (hourly files).

Beschreibung: SEGY and supplementary data of the seismic reflection experiment in the Baza Basin (Southern Spain). Presented are unstacked and unmigrated data of three 2D vibroseis profiles which were carried out in October 2013 and all corresponding raw data. The dataset is archived at the GIPP Experiment and Data Archive. The Baza Basin is an intra-mountain evaporitic basin in the Betic Cordillera (Southern Spain). The basin is formed by Pliocene to Pleistocene sediments. It can be distinguished into three lithological zones corresponding to different paleo-environments (Gibert et al., 2007). The inner zone, interpreted as a central saline lake, is dominated by an alternation of gypsum and carbonate laminae. The intermediate zone is characterized by cyclic carbonate beds. This zone is interpreted as a mosaic of shallow lakes surrounding the inner zone. The marginal zone consists of lacustrine deposits which are surrounded by an alluvial belt. In the marginal zone, distal fan deposits and shallow lake sediments alternate as a result of fluctuations in the lake water level which are related to changes in climate (Gibert et al., 2007). Therefore, up to 2.5 km thick lacustrine and ancillary continental deposits are found in this part of the basin which provide an unique archive of climatic changes and paleo-climatic events. The basin is bounded to the West by the Baza fault zone (e.g., Alfaro et al., 2010). There are plans to analyze the sedimentary record of the central zone with regard to the paleo-climaste in the Mediterranean as well as on a global scale within a scientific drilling project. In preparation for future drilling activities, the project BASE (BAza Seismic Experiment) started in the middle of the year 2013 with a duration of 12 month. In the framework of this project, controlled-source seismic measurements were used to investigate the structure of the Baza Basin and to find local zones of neo-tectonic deformation bounding the basin to the west (Baza fault). The aim of the seismic work was to provide structural information for the planned scientific drilling project. The vibroseismic experiments were carried out in the vicinity of Baza during 21st and 29th October 2013. A net of three individual seismic profiles was conducted, each 18 km in length (Figure 1). Two simultaneously operating vibrators were used as source at 301 positions at each profile. The nominal source point spacing was 60 m. The receivers were spread along the active profile in a roll-along configuration with a nominal receiver spacing of 20 m. Depending on the proceeding of the vibrators, groups of receivers were picked up at the end of the spread and were moved to the front. With a total amount of ~340 receivers, an offset range of at least 3 km around the source point was covered during the entire registration of each profile. Additionally to the roll-along receivers at Line 2, 31 fixed recorders were spread with a spacing of 600 m over the full distance of this profile (far-field recordings).

Beschreibung: This data pubilcation includes EnMAP-like imaging spectroscopy data files to be used for mineral mapping with the EnMAP BOX software. It is simulated EnMAP satellite data, which is based on hyperspectral flight campaign data with the AVIRIS-NG and HyMap sensors. In preparation of the EnMAP satellite mission, an EnMAP BOX software package provides tools for visualization and scientific analysis of the data. Among many applications, the EnMAP BOX contains geological mapping tools (EnGeoMAP). Here we apply these tools to several representative test cases (Boesche, 2015; Boesche et al. 2016; Mielke et al., 2016). The test data comprise two study sites. The first scene covers the Mountain Pass open pit mine - a carbonatite deposit in California, USA. It contains calcitic rock units and rare earth element (REE) bearing minerals of the bastnaesite group, also called fluorocarbonates (Olson et al., 1954). The REE concentrations at mountain pass are 9.2% on average, among the highest in the world (Brüning and Böhmer, 2011). The high concentration and the open pit activities make Mountain Pass an ideal test site to investigate the rare earth element distribution in the surface layer. The airborne image data were collected in 2014 by Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), USA, with the AVIRIS-NG sensor and form the basis for EnMAP simulations (Segl et al., 2012; Thompson et al., 2015). The second HyMap spectral image data covers part of the Miocene Cabo de Gata Nίjar volcanic field, in southeast Spain. It comprises a subset of (Chabrillat et al., 2016) covering the Rodalquilar and Lomilla Calderas, which host the economically relevant gold-silver, lead-zinc-silver-gold and alunite deposits. It is a hydrothermal alteration complex, representing the silicic alteration, the advanced argillic alteration zone, which grades into the argillic and propylitic zone (Arribas et al., 1995, 1989). The image data are part of the Cabo de Gata Nίjar HyMap imagery which was collected during the DLR HyEurope airborne campaign 2005 in the frame of the GFZ land degradation program (Chabrillat et al., 2016, 2005). We use these datasets to simulate EnMAP-like images for classification and mapping using spectroscopic remote sensing techniques in the EnGeoMAP tools. The EnMAP end-to-end Simulation (EeteS) tool produced simulated EnMAP like data with a spatial sampling distance of 30 x 30 m and 242 spectral bands (Guanter et al., 2015; Segl et al., 2012). File format for both sites: Band Sequential Image Files (*.bsq) and file header (*.hdr). The full description of the datasets is given in the associated data report by Boesche et al. (2016).

Beschreibung: The SLO-VRP2016/Koper quasi-geoid model is the latest height reference surface for Slovenia, referred to the GRS80 ellipsoid. The acronym means SLOvenska Višinska Referenčna Ploskev iz leta 2016, datum Koper (translated in English, Slovenian Height Reference Surface from the year 2016, datum Koper). It was computed by the Surveying and Mapping Authority of the Republic of Slovenia, in cooperation with the Norwegian Mapping Authority (Kartverket). The model is based on a set of old terrestrial gravity data (origin from Yugoslavia, from 1956-75), a set of new Slovenian gravity data (along levelling lines and regional gravimetric survey, from 2000 to 2015) and sets from neighboring countries (Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia), altogether 16.400 points in the mean-tide system. Stokes/Molodensky equations and the Fast Fourier transform technique have been applied with use of global geopotential model EGM2008. The computed quasi-geoid surface was adapted (fitted) to 66 high quality GNSS/levelling points, which were fairly distributed throughout the territory of Slovenia. Therefore, the resulting quasi geoid model can be used to perform the conversion between ellipsoidal heights (Slovenian realization of ETRS89 - D96, GRS80 ellipsoid) and normal heights (Slovenian Height System 2010 - SVS2010 with Koper tide gauge). The SLO_VRP2016/Koper model is given in the form of a regular grid, with resolution of 30” × 45”, within the limits of 13° 〈 λ 〈 17° (east of Greenwich) and 45° 〈 φ 〈 47° (north of the equator). In this area geoid heights range between 42.157 m and 50.608 m, with an average of 46.162 m. The inner accuracy of the calculated geoid heights is 2.6 cm, the outer accuracy (based on 871 control GNSS/levelling measurements along levelling lines) is up to 10 cm. The geoid model is provided in ISG format 2.0 (ISG Format Specifications), while the file in its original data format is available at the model ISG webpage.

Beschreibung: The KISS network was installed in the frame of the "Klyuchevskoy Investigation - Seismic Structure of an extraordinary volcanic system" project and recorded data between summer 2015 and summer 2016 in one of the world's largest clusters of subduction volcanoes - the Klyuchevskoy volcanic group (KVG). It is located in eastern Russia at the northern end of the Kuril-Kamchatka subduction zone close to its intersection with the Aleutian arc and the north-western termination of Hawaii-Emperor seamount chain. Additional to the 4700m high Mount Klyuchevskoy the KVG contains 12 other volcanoes that have together erupted about 1 cubic meter rock per second averaged over the past 10,000 years. Among those Klyuchevskoy, Bezymianny and Tolbachik were the most active ones during the last decades with eruptions styles ranging from explosive to Hawaiian-type. The KISS experiment is designed to investigate the volcanic and seismic processes and its structural setting in the KVG. The network covers a circular region of about 80km diameter with some linear extensions. It includes data from 77 temporary seismic stations with broadband and short period sensors that were installed on concrete plates in about 60cm deep holes. Due to the local conditions the stations were battery powered and could not be serviced during the experiment. GPS reception of the digitizers was not continuous at all stations due to thick snow cover and vegetation.

From 2011-06-01 until 2013-12-31, the measurement and control system at the Groß Schönebeck research platform acquired data from several circulation experiments. Different data values were recorded at a sampling interval of 1 s. Relevant data for understanding and analyzing the hydraulic situation of the system were resampled to a 1 minute interval. From the resampled dataset, additional parameters were derived. Furthermore, if parameters were considered to be essential, but the measurement of these parameters was erroneous, some data were reprocessed. All relevant data and processing steps performed on the data are described within this report. Data described within this report can be accessed via http://dx.doi.org/10.5880/GFZ.b103-15021.1. The presented data was acquired during different research projects by the staff of the International Centre for Geothermal Research as well as Section 4.1 Reservoirtechnologies at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.

Beschreibung: The GEOIDE-Ar16 Argentinian gravimetric geoid model covers the area from 57° S to 20° S in latitude and from 76° W to 52° W in longitude, with a grid resolution of 1' × 1'. It was developed using the remove-compute-restore technique and incorporating the GOCO05S satellite-only global geopotential model up to degree and order 280, together with about 650,000 land and marine gravity measurements. Terrain corrections were calculated for all gravity observations using a combination of the SRTM_v4.1 and SRTM30_Plus_v10 digital elevation models. For the regions that lacked of gravity observations, the DTU13 gravity model was utilised. The residual gravity anomalies were gridded using the tensioned spline algorithm. The resultant gravity anomaly grid was applied in the Stokes' integral using the spherical multi-band FFT approach and the deterministic kernel modification proposed by Wong and Gore. The accuracy of GEOIDE-Ar16 was assessed by comparing it with GPS-levelling derived geoid undulations at 1,904 locations and the EGM2008 model. Results show that the GEOIDE-Ar16 geoid model has an accuracy of less than 10 centimetres. The geoid model is provided in ISG format 2.0 (ISG Format Specifications), while the file in its original data format is available at the model ISG webpage.

The overall goal of the study was to investigate the potential of hyperspectral and LiDAR data for assessing sediment connectivity at the hillslope to subcatchment scale. For that the fractional cover of green vegetation, dry vegetation, bare soil and rock was derived by applying a multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis approach to the hyperspectral image data. The LiDAR point clouds were pre-processed to generate a digital elevation map as well as a vegetation height map, both with 4-m spatial resolution.

Beschreibung: EIGEN-6S4 (Version 2) is a satellite-only global gravity field model from the combination of LAGEOS, GRACE and GOCE data. All spherical harmonic coefficients up to degree/order 80 are time variable. Their time variable parameters consist of drifts as well as annual and semi-annual variations per year. The time series of the time variable spherical harmonic coefficients are based on the LAGEOS-1/2 solution (1985 to 2003) and the GRACE-LAGEOS monthly gravity fields RL03-v2 (August 2002 to July 2014) from GRGS/Toulouse (Bruinsma et al. 2009).The herein included GRACE/LAGEOS data were combined with all GOCE data which have been processed via the direct numerical approach (Pail et al. 2011). The polar gap instabilty has been overcome using the Sperical Cap Regularization (Metzler and Pail 2005). That means this model is a combination of LAGEOS/GACE with GO_CONS_GCF_2_DIR_R5 (Bruinsma et al. 2013).Version History: This data set is an updated version of Foerste et al. (2016, http://doi.org/10.5880/icgem.2016.004) Compared to the first version, EIGEN-6S4v2 contains an improved modelling of the time variable part, in particular for C20.

Data and file names remain unchanged.Area Source model for Central AsiaThe area sources for Central Asia within the EMCA model are defined by mainly considering the pattern of crustal seismicity down to 50 km depth. Although tectonic and geological information, such as the position and strike distribution of known faults, have also been taken into account when available. Large area sources (see, for example source_id 1, 2, 5, 45 and 52, source ids are identified by parameter “source_id” in the related shapefile) are defined where the seismicity is scarce and there are no tectonic or geological features that would justify a further subdivision. Smaller area sources (e.g., source_id values 36 and 53) have been designed where the seismicity can be assigned to known fault zones. In order to obtain a robust estimation of the necessary parameters for PSHA derived by the statistical analysis of the seismicity, due to the scarcity of data in some of the areas covered by the model, super zones are introduced. These super zones are defined by combining area sources based on similarities in their tectonic regime, and taking into account local expert’s judgments. The super zones are used to estimate: (1) the completeness time of the earthquake catalogue, (2) the depth distribution of seismicity, (3) the tectonic regime through focal mechanisms analysis, (4) the maximum magnitude and (5) the b values via the GR relationship. The earthquake catalogue for focal mechanism is extracted from the Harvard Global Centroid Moment Tensor Catalog (Ekström and Nettles, 2013). For the focal mechanism classification, the Boore et al. (1997) convention is used. This means that an event is considered to be strike-slip if the absolute value of the rake angle is 〈=30 or 〉=150 degrees, normal if the rake angle is 〈-30 or 〉-150 and reverse (thrust) if the rake angle is 〉30 or 〈150 degrees. The distribution of source mechanisms and their weights are estimated for the super zones. For area sources, the maximum magnitude is usually taken from the historical seismicity, but due to some uncertainties in the magnitudes of the largest events, the opinions of the local experts are also included in assigning the maximum magnitude to each super zone. Super zones 2 and 3, which belongs to stable regions, are each assigned a maximum magnitude of 6, after Mooney et al. (2012), which concludes after analyses and observation of modern datasets that at least an event of magnitude 6 can occur anywhere in the world. For hazard calculations, each area source is assigned the maximum magnitude of their respective super zone. For processing the GR parameters (a and b values) for the area sources, the completeness analysis results estimated for the super zones are assigned to the respective smaller area sources. If the individual area source has at least 20 events, the GR parameters are then estimated for the area source. Otherwise, the b value is adopted from the respective super zone to which the smaller area source belongs, and the a value is estimated based on the Weichert (1980) method. This ensures the stability in the b value as well as the variation of activity rate for different sources. The hypocentral depth distribution is estimated from the seismicity inside each super zone. The depth distribution is considered for maximum up to three values. Based on the number of events, the weights are assigned to each distribution. These depth distributions, along with corresponding weights, are further assigned to the area sources within the same super zones.

Beschreibung: The Halmahera island belongs to the North Moluccas province (Maluku Utara), Indonesia. This K-shaped island is located in the eastern part of the Moluccas Sea, the only active arc-arc collision complex on the Earth. The western arm of the K forms a volcanic arc due to the former subduction of the Moluccas Sea plate underneath Halmahera. The region is characterized by intense seismic activity at crustal, intermediate depth, and along the subducting plate. At crustal level the Halmahera seismicity along the two eastern arms of the K show strike-slip faulting style. In November 2015 a localized intense and energetic seismic activity started around Jailolo volcano in the West Halmahera Regency. The seismic sequence intermittently lasted until February 2016 and hundreds of events were felt by the population and several buildings were destroyed and damaged by the shaking. The largest shocks of the sequence have been located by global agencies (GEOFON and GCMT) showing normal faulting style. The temporal evolution of the seismicity seems to be more swarm-like type activity instead of mainshock-aftershock sequence. In spring 2016 a research project has been funded by the German's Humanitarian Aid program in collaboration with BMKG, Indonesia, with the goal of understanding the origin of the intense seismic activity and the related hazard. In summer 2016 we instrumented the area with a dense seismic network composed of 29 short period and 6 broad-band seismometers. The instruments deployment aims at characterizing the seismicity of the Jailolo region in relationship with the 2015-2016 seismic activity. The network will help to understand the seismo-tectonic of the area and the relation between seismicity and the volcanic activity at Jailolo volcano and possible link with the 2015-2016 swarm. Should the seismic activity intensify as in November 2015, we can record it and narrow down the underlying physical mechanisms. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 7G, and are embargoed until the end of 2021.

Beschreibung: Strong earthquakes cause transient perturbations of the near Earth’s surface system. These include the widespread landsliding and subsequent mass movement and the loading of rivers with sediments. In addition, rock mass is shattered during the event, forming cracks that affect rock strength and hydrological conductivity. Often overlooked in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake, these perturbations can represent a major part of the overall disaster with an impact that can last for years before restoring to background conditions. Thus, the relaxation phase is part of the seismically induced change by an earthquake and needs to be monitored in order to understand the full impact of earthquakes on the Earth system. Early June 2015, shortly after the April 2015 Mw7.9 Gorkha earthquake, we installed an array of 12 seismometers and geophones and 6 weather stations in the upper Bhotekoshi catchment, covering an area of ~50 km2. The seismic network was optimized for the monitoring of Earth surface processes (landsliding, mass wasting river processes, debris flows) and for the monitoring of properties of the shallow subsurface by coda analysis. To achieve the latter aim and to probe different scales and depths, seismometers were installed with inter-station distances from about 80m to 9km. In particular, in each of two locations close to the Bhotekoshi river, three seismometers were installed in small arrays with inter-station distances of about 100m. The seismic array is part of a wider data acquisition strategy including hydrometric measurements and high resolution optical (RapidEye) and radar imagery (TanDEM TerraSAR-X). Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code XN.

Beschreibung: A temporary installation has been realized in the Netherlands, in the region of the Groningen gas field. The objective of this installation is to test the usage of a conventional array layout for detection of microseismicity. The region of the Groningen gas field is an excellent test ground, since the operating company NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij) installed a multitude of shallow borehole stations from 2014 to 2017, of which 65 – in addition to the already existing shallow borehole stations installed by KNMI (Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut) – were already online during the time of measurement, thus ensuring an earthquake catalogue that is complete down to low magnitudes during the time of array installation. The site for the installation was decided together with local parties involved in the seismicity monitoring, i.e. KNMI and NAM, and was located close to the village of Wittewierum. Stations were installed from the 12th of July 2016 to the 29th of August 2016 (49 days). The array was composed of 9 stations. The array was constructed in three concentric rings of 75 m, 150 m and 225 m diameter including a central station, but the geometry had to be adapted to the local conditions. Each station consisted of a broadband sensor (Trillium 120 s), an acquisition system (CUBE datalogger), a battery, and a GPS antenna. The entire system was installed at ~1 m depth (apart from GPS and transmission antennas), requiring only the digging of shallow holes, one for the installation of a thin concrete plate and the sensor, another one for a box containing the remaining instrumentation. The array stations recorded continuously with little outages; only station WAR1 stopped recording on the 22nd of August and station WAR7 stopped recording from 20th to 22nd of August. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 1C, and is fully open.

Beschreibung: The TOMO-ETNA experiment was focused on the base of generation and acquisition of seismic signal (active and passive) at Mt. Etna volcano and surrounding area. The terrestrial campaign consists in the deployment of 80 short-period three-component seismic stations (June 15 to July24), 17 Broadband seismometers (June 15 to October 30) provided by Helmholtz Centre Potsdam (GFZ) German Research Centre for Geosciences using the German Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam (GIPP Gerätepool Geophysik), and the coordination with 133 permanent seismic station belonging to the “Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia” (INGV) of Italy. This temporary seismic network recorded active and passive seismic sources. Active seismic sources were generated by an array of air-guns mounted in the Spanish Oceanographic vessel “Sarmiento de Gamboa” with a power capacity of up to 5.200 cubic inches. In total more than 26.000 shots were fired and more than 450 local and regional earthquakes were recorded. Until July the Oceanographic Vessel “Sarmiento de Gamboa” and the hydrographic vessel “Galatea” were responsible for the offshore activities, that included deployment of OBSs, and several marine activities. The vessel “Aegaeo” performed additional seismic, magnetic and gravimetric experiments until the end of November 2014. This experiment was part of the “Task 5.3 - Mt. Etna structure” of the “EU MED-SUV Project” concerned with the investigation of Mt. Etna volcano (seismic tomography experiment - TOMO-ETNA) by means of passive and active refraction/reflection seismic methods. It focused on the investigation of Etna’s roots and surrounding areas by means of passive and active seismic methods. Therefore, this experiment included activities both on-land and offshore with the main objective to obtain a new high-resolution tomography in order to improve the 3D image of the crustal structures existing beneath the Etna volcano and the northeast Sicily (Peloritani - Nebrodi chain) up to the Aeolian Islands. Waveform data are open and available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 1T.

Beschreibung: The experiments are performed down the Edward Bailey valley, in the Renland peninsula, Scoresby Sund, Greenland. General purpose: ambient seismic noise recordings are obtained to characterize the geometry/structure of the valley the geometry/structure of the glaciers the microseismicity of the glacier, the friction process, crack orientation and mechanisms the seismic activity of glacial rivers, the relation between hydrological flow and noise spectrum the localization and characterization of sub-glacial flow from surface recordings. Seismic stations were composed of 3C broadband Trillium compact seismometer, a Cube datalogger and a 12V (D-cell types, stacked) battery pack. The experiment splits into three surveys performed at three different sites, one after the other, from july to august 2016. In the first experiment, we deploy 11 stations, 9 of them on a flat sandy area covering, partly, immobile ice that seems to be blocked between the Bailey Glacier (upstream) and the Apusinikajik glacier (downstream). The 9 sensors are placed a few hundreds of meters from the Apusinikajik lateral front, the last 2 are placed on the glacier next to the collapsing front. In the second and third experiment (chronologically speaking), we deploy 10 and 8 stations, respectively. Each deployment is performed along a Bailey valley transect. The first one intercepts the front-end of the glacier and the sub-glacial river exit (flow of several m3/s). The second transect is performed some 850m upstream. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 3H, and are embargoed until summer of 2019.

Beschreibung: Due to its strong influence on heat and moisture exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere, sea ice is an essential component of the global climate system. In the context of its alarming decrease in terms of concentration, thickness and duration, understanding the processes controlling sea-ice variability and reconstructing paleo-sea-ice extent in polar regions have become of great interest for the scientific community. In this study, for the first time, IP25, a recently developed biomarker sea-ice proxy, was used for a high-resolution reconstruction of the sea-ice extent and its variability in the western North Pacific and western Bering Sea during the past 18,000 years. To identify mechanisms controlling the sea-ice variability, IP25 data were associated with published sea-surface temperature as well as diatom and biogenic opal data. The results indicate that a seasonal sea-ice cover existed during cold periods (Heinrich Stadial 1 and Younger Dryas), whereas during warmer intervals (Bølling-Allerød and Holocene) reduced sea ice or ice-free conditions prevailed in the study area. The variability in sea-ice extent seems to be linked to climate anomalies and sea-level changes controlling the oceanographic circulation between the subarctic Pacific and the Bering Sea, especially the Alaskan Stream injection though the Aleutian passes.

The survey region was sampled by flying systematically spaced line transects (parallel lines approximately 10 nm apart) whenever ship position and weather conditions allowed, with out clustering transects in areas of easier access. When a full transect length could not be flown on a day, we attempted to complete (extend) the particular transect on a following day.

Beschreibung: Extra-tropical circulation systems impede poleward moisture advection by the Indian Summer Monsoon. In this context, the Himalayan range is believed to insulate the south Asian circulation from extra-tropical influences and to delineate the northern extent of the Indian Summer Monsoon in central Asia. Paleoclimatic evidence, however, suggests increased moisture availability in the Early Holocene north of the Himalayan range which is attributed to an intensification of the Indian Summer Monsoon. Nevertheless, mechanisms leading to a surpassing of the Himalayan range and the northern maximum extent of summer monsoonal influence remain unknown. Here we show that the Kunlun barrier on the northern Tibetan Plateau [~36°N] delimits Indian Summer Monsoon precipitation during the Holocene. The presence of the barrier relocates the insulation effect 1,000 km further north, allowing a continental low intensity branch of the Indian Summer Monsoon which is persistent throughout the Holocene. Precipitation intensities at its northern extent seem to be driven by differentiated solar heating of the Northern Hemisphere indicating dependency on energy-gradients rather than absolute radiation intensities. The identified spatial constraints of monsoonal precipitation will facilitate the prediction of future monsoonal precipitation patterns in Central Asia under varying climatic conditions.
