Notizen: Abstract The action of ouabain and cyclic AMP on the Ca-accumulating capacity and outflow of Ca2+ ions from loaded rat heart mitochondria was studied by the tetracycline probe method. In the course of the investigations no effect of ouabain on these processes was found. Cyclic AMP did not act on Ca binding by the mitochondrial membrane but it induced rapid liberation of Ca2+ from organelles loaded with these ions.

Notizen: Abstract Acute experiments on rats adapted for 1 month to an altitude of 2100 m showed that in the early period of exposure at this altitude the systolic pressure in the left ventricle and the rate of its development and fall were considerably greater than the corresponding indices in control experiments in Moscow. the indices of contractile function subsequently stabilized gradually. Four weeks later the hearts of the adapted animals showed a much greater rise in the indices of contractile function in response to injection of adrenalin and greater stability of this function at very high heart rates.

Notizen: Abstract A disturbance of neuromuscular transmission, characterized by a decrease in the threshold strength of indirect stimulation, a decrease in the amplitude of the combined action potential of the muscle, a shortening of the latent period and of the absolute and relative refractory phases, and changes in the character of the response of the muscle to indirect repetitive stimulation was found in experiments on albino rats with experimental hypoparathyroidism. After intravenous injection of neostigmine into the experimental animals the various indices showed a tendency to return to their values in the control experiments. It is concluded that the disturbance of neuromuscular transmission is connected with a presynaptic defect and that it may be of definite importance in the development of the motor disturbances observable in hypoparathyroidism.

Notizen: Abstract More calcium was removed by EDTA from the membranes of erythrocytes of patients with hypertension than from the erythrocytes of persons with a normal blood pressure. By the use of an isotonic solution of MgCl2, the quantity of calcium removed from the erythrocyte membrane was the same in both groups. Activity of Na, K-ATPase in the membrane of reconstituted erythrocytes of patients with essential hypertension increased its activity in healthy human erythrocytes.

    Thema: Biologie , Medizin
Notizen: Abstract The rate of swelling of rat liver mitochondria in the presence of thyroxine depended only a little on the cationic composition of the medium (KCl, NaCl, or choline chloride), which suggests an unselective increase in mitochondrial membrane permeability for cations in the presence of thyroxine. The antioxidant α-tocopherol and β-ionol, in concentrations completely suppressing peroxidation of lipids, did not affect thyroxine-induced swelling of the mitochondria, which is thus not connected with lipid peroxidation. The kinetics of swelling and its inhibition by the Ca-chelating agent EGTA are evidence that Ca2+ is essential for induction of this process. Thyroxine swelling of mitochondria is evidently based on activation of membrane phospholipase in these organelles.

Notizen: Abstract Disturbance of the microcirculation by injection of high-molecular-weight dextran and vasopressin leads within a few minutes to intensification of glycolysis in the myocardium. This is shown by a lowering of the glycogen concentration, an increase in phosphorylase activity, and elevation of the pyruvate level. The concentration of high-energy phosphates still remains unchanged. Activation of glycolysis can be regarded as the initial metabolic response to hypoxia resulting from disturbance of the microcirculation.

Quelle: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
    Thema: Biologie , Medizin
Notizen: Abstract The bulk density of the intramyocardial arteries is shown to be equal to the sum of their bulk densities obtained from the results of planimetric measurements in three mutually perpendicular histological sections. To avoid systematic erros, only those vessels in which the ratio between the short (D) and long (L) diameter of the cross sections (D/L) is not less than 0.707 should be examined planimetrically. Examples of calculation of the bulk density of the intramyocardial vessels of the human heart are given. It is shown that the bulk density of the arteries in different parts of the human myocardium is not identical.
