In:  Supplement to: Biolzi, Milena (1983): Stable isotopic study of Oligocene-Miocene sediments from DSDP Site 354, Equatorial Atlantic. Marine Micropaleontology, 8(2), 121-139, https://doi.org/10.1016/0377-8398(83)90008-7
    Publication Date: 2023-07-10
Description: The oxygen- and carbon-isotope compositions of planktic and benthic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils from Middle Oligocene-Early Miocene Equatorial Atlantic sediments (DSDP Site 354) indicate two important paleoceanographic changes, in the Late Oligocene (foraminiferal Zone P.21) and in the Early Miocene (foraminiferal Zone N.5). The first change, reflected by a delta18O increase of 1.45‰ in Globigerina venezuelana, affected only intermediate pelagic and not surface, deep or bottom waters. The second change affected surface and intermediate waters, whereas deep and bottom waters showed only minor fluctuations. In the case of the former the isotope effect of the moderate ice accumulation on the Antarctic continent is amplified in the Equatorial Atlantic by changes in the circulation pattern. The latter paleoceanographic change, reflected by a significant increase in 18O in both planktic and benthic forms (about 1.0‰ and 0.5‰, respectively), may have been caused by ice volume increase and temperature decrease. Both oxygen- and carbon-isotope compositions indicate a marked depth-habitat stratification for planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils. Three different dwelling groups are recognized: shallow Globigerinoides, Globoquadrina dehiscens, Globorotalia mayeri and nannofossils; intermediate Globigerina venezuelana; and deep Catapsydrax dissimilis. The comparison of foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils suggests that the isotopic compositions of nannofossils are generally controlled by the same parameters which control the isotopic composition of shallow-dwelling foraminifera, but the former are more enriched in 18O.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-10
Description: DSDP Site 516 contains a complete middle Eocene to lower Miocene interval with a well-developed Oligocene sequence that is more than 300 m thick. In this paper, the most important and characteristic benthic foraminiferal species from this interval are described and illustrated, and their quantitative and biostratigraphic distribution is given. Middle Eocene benthic assemblages, derived from pelagic intercalations in a partly turbiditic sequence, are low in diversity. Benthic assemblages of fairly high diversity occur in limestones, chalks, and oozes of the upper Eocene to lower Miocene. The consistently high rate of new species appearances at Site 516 during late Eocene and Oligocene contrasted greatly with the very slow rate of change in abyssal faunas at that time; there were no significant faunal changes at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. The assemblages are dominated by Cibicidoides (mostly C. ungerianus or C. kullenbergi) and Lenticulina. Buliminids were also important during the Eocene and early Oligocene. Faunal comparison with other Atlantic DSDP sites and drill holes in the Gulf of Mexico suggest an approximately mid-bathyal (500-1500 m) depth of deposition during late Eocene and Oligocene.

In: Barker, PF; Carlson, RL; Johnson, DA; et al. (eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 72, 757-782, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.72.134.1983
    Publication Date: 2023-07-10
Description: Benthic foraminifers of the Coniacian-Santonian through the Paleocene were recovered from a continuous pelagic carbonate section from Hole 516F on the Rio Grande Rise. Sixty-five genera and 153 species have been identified, most of which have been reported from other localities. Bathyal depths are reflected in the benthic assemblages dominated by gavelinellids (Gavelinella beccariiformis, G. velascoensis), Nuttallides truempyi, and various gyroidinids and buliminids. Rapid subsidence during the Coniacian-Santonian from nearshore to upper to middle bathyal depths was followed by much reduced subsidence, with the Campanian-Paleocene interval accumulating at middle bathyal to lower bathyal depths. A census study based on detailed sampling reveals major changes in benthic faunal composition at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary transition. It was a time of rapid turnover, with the extinctions of numerous species and the introduction of many new species. Overall, species diversity decreases about 20%, and approximately one-third of latest Maestrichtian species do not survive to the end of the Cretaceous. This shift indicates a significant environmental change in the deep sea, the precise nature of which is not apparent from the foraminifers or their enclosing sediments.

Description: Calcareous nannofossils from upper Campanian-lower Maestrichtian Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 71 Cores 511-23 and 511-24 are described and correlated with assemblages of similar age from piston and drill cores on the Falkland Plateau, South Atlantic Ocean. The Leg 71 cores partially fill a drilling gap of at least 20 meters left within a thick (50 m) carbonate section first drilled by DSDP Leg 36 at Site 327. Cores 511-23 and 511-24 both fall within the upper portion of the Biscutum coronum Zone of Wind and demonstrate an overlap in the range of Monomarginatus quaternarius with the ranges of M. pectinatus, Misceomarginatus pleniporus, and Biscutum coronum across the Campanian/ Maestrichtian boundary. Resolution of the sequence of highest occurrence datums for the latter species must await the recovery of a more complete section. Comparison of the Site 511 assemblages with those from Mas Orcadas Core 07-75-44 to the north confirms earlier speculation that the Falkland Plateau served as an important boundary between major water masses during the Late Cretaceous.

In:  Supplement to: Bukry, David (1983): Upper Cenozoic silicoflagellates from offshore Ecuador, Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 504. In: Cann, JR; Langseth, MG; Honnorez, J; Von Herzen, RP; White, SM; et al. (eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 69, 321-342, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.69.113.1983
    Publication Date: 2023-07-09
Description: Diverse and abundant late Miocene to Pleistocene silicoflagellates at DSDP Site 504 can be correlated by tropical biostratigraphic zones and relative paleotemperature values to eastern tropical Pacific reference site DSDP 503A farther to the west. Early Pliocene assemblages, which were poorly known until now, are present and can be correlated locally between DSDP Holes 504, 503A, and 495, using species events associated with the new Dictyocha pulchella Subzone and Dictyocha angulata Subzone. Silicoflagellate relative paleotemperature values show major warming at 4.7 to 5.0 Ma (Cores 45-48), 3.4 to 3.8 Ma (Cores 32-33), 1.5 to 1.7 Ma (Cores 12-16), and 0.5 to 0.8 Ma (Cores 3-6). Major coolings occurred at 5.0 to 5.1 Ma (Core 51), 3.9 to 4.4 Ma (Cores 38-44), and 1.0 to 1.3 Ma (Cores 8-10). The appearance of Dictyocha longa is proposed to replace the asperoid/fibuloid ratio reversal as the bottom of the Dictyocha fibula Zone, because the non-evolutionary ratio reverses several times in the upper Miocene of Hole 503A, and at least once in Hole 504. Three new Pliocene silicoflagellates are defined: Dictyocha concinna Bukry, n. sp., D. helix Bukry, n. sp., and D. tamarae Bukry, n. sp.

Description: During DSDP Leg 70, a 1.60 m thick manganese oxide layer was sampled in hole 509B. This deposit is formed of alternating layers of hard plates of pure todorokite, about 2 mm thick, and of a more powdery material deeply impregnated with manganese oxide, about 3 mm thick. A SEM study of the plates and the associated powder shows that the powdery material is a transformation of a pre-existing sediment, while the plates are a direct precipitation from a hydrothermal solution. The uranium series disequilibrium method was used to determine the ages of the plates. They are found to be in good chronological sequence and in accordance with the sedimentation rate of the area (4.9 cm/10^3 years) which implies that they have been formed at the sediment-seawater interface during a pulsed injection of hydrothermal solution. The powder presents systematically an “older age” which is explained by a slowing down of the injection while the normal sediment settles; the older age is due to the 230Th excess of the sediment.

Description: Constants of calcium, magnesium, zinc, cobalt, copper, and nickel exchange for sodium in iron-manganese nodules taken from different parts of the Pacific Ocean were determined under static conditions at constant ionic strength (?=0.05). These determinations revealed high capacity of nodules for sorbing the referred ions (their exchange constants range from 1.93 to 20.85). Obtained data demonstrate the major role of MnO and Fe2O3 in sorption processes in iron-manganese nodules.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: In 1970 a large deposit of ferromanganese nodules was discovered on the floor of the Indian Ocean southwest of Cape Leeuwin by the research vessel USNS Eltanin. This discovery, which was based largely on bottom photographs from about 20 stations, was discussed by Frakes (1975) and Kennett and Watkins (1975, 1976). The photographs suggest that the deposit spreads, nearly continuously, over 900 000km^2, and cores showed that the nodules are essentially confined to the sediment surface. Kennett and Watkins (op. cit.) pointed to the abundance of ripple and scour marks and current-formed lineations on the present surface, and of extensive disconformities in the cores, as evidence of strong present and past bottom currents in the region. They suggested that the current action had resulted in very low sedimentation rates, which had allowed the nodule field, named by them (1976) the 'Southeast Indian Ocean Manganese Pavement', to develop. In early 1976 the authors used the research vessel HMAS Diamantina for a 10-day cruise in the region to sample the nodules in order to study their chemistry and mineralogy. During the cruise 9 stations were occupied, 8 of them successfully (Figure 1), and about 2000 nodules were recovered from the sea bed. The apparatus used was a light box dredge on the ships hydrowire, which had a breaking strain of about one tonne. Although an attempt was made to reoccupy Eltanin photographic stations, it should be noted that positioning was by celestial navigation, so errors of up to 10 km are possible.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: The major and minor element compositions of a suite of abyssal sea-floor ferromanganese nodules and associated sediments from the eastern central Pacific have been used to examine inter-element relationships and the mineralogy of the nodules, the relationship between the composition of nodules, and their associated sediments and regional variations in composition with respect to likely modes for formation of such deposits. Apart from Mn and Fe, significant proportions of the total Ti, Ca, Mg, K, Ba, Sr, Th and Y and almost all the P, As, Ce, Co, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Zn and Zr are present in the oxide fractions of the nodules. The Mg, Ba, Cu, Mo, Ni and Zn contents are significantly correlated with the total Fe content. Nodules from the northeastern tropical Pacific have Mn/Fe ratios highter than those in the oxide fractions of their associated sediments, todorokite as the principal Mn phase and relatively high concns of minor elements associated with Mn. Nodules from the south central Pacific have Mn/Fe ratios similar to those in the oxide fractions of the associated sediments, {delta}-MnO Sub(2) as the only Mn-phase, and relatively high concns of minor elements associated with Fe. There appears to be a smooth gradation in composition in the tropical Pacific between these 2 end members. The retional compositional variation is interpreted as a reflection of different sources of metals for, and different growth mechanisms of, sea-floor nodules. The oxide precipitate from sea water consists of {delta}-MnO Sub(2), has a relatively low Mn/Fe ratio and minor element contents related to the total Fe and Mn({delta}-MnO Sub(2)) content. The oxide precipitate forming in areas of very low sedimentation as a result of diagenetic remobilisation in the surface sediment consists of todorokite, and has a high Mn/Fe ratio and enhanced metal content in the Mn-(todorokite) phase. Available information on the morphology and compositional variation of individual nodules from the tropical Pacific corroborates these contrasting metal sources and suggests that they can be resolved on the scale of an individual oxide concretion.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Considerable regional variations in the chemical composition of manganese nodules from a wide range of the Pacific Ocean have been observed. These variations can be more exactly expressed in terms of inter-element relationships. In particular, Cu-Mn and Cu-Ni associations reveal that Cu content in pelagic nodules increases rapidly in proportion to those of Mn or Ni. In nodules from continental borderland and hemipelagic areas, even if Mn or Ni contents increase, that of Cu increases only slightly. It is suggested that the considerable chemical differences within individual nodules and between nodules from the same site, at a limited pelagic area where there is no marked change in depositional conditions of nodules, are due to the role of hydrolyzable trace elements in the formation of nodules.

Description: Bulk composition of ferromanganese nodules from the pelagic environment of the Pacific Ocean is apparently related to nodule-growth rate, sediment-accumulation rate, and biologic productivity in the overlying seawater. Nodules with a high Mn/Fe ratio and high Ni and Cu concns tend to occur in areas where primary productivity in the surface layer of the ocean is high and the sediment accumulation rate low. They may have a Mn/Fe ratio as low as one and accrete at rates as low as 1 mm/10 M yrs. Nodules with a larger Mn/Fe ratio apparently have growth rates that are greater by as much as a factor of 10.

Description: This paper reviews the state of the art in processing and extraction of ocean floor manganese nodules. It briefly reviews the mining sites where the abundant rich nodules occur and also discusses the metal distribution in nodules in view of economical processing and extraction of these metal values. The paper discloses in a detailed manner the physical and chemical characteristics of nodules, including porosity, surface area, water content and the effect of temperature on crystal structure of major constituents of nodules. In the extraction aspect of nodules, the paper reviews two different extraction schemes revealed in the literature, namely hydrometallurgical treatment and pyrometallurgical treatment. The hydrometallurgical treatments include acid leaching, ammonia leaching, leaching with reducing agents and leaching after high temperature pre-treatments such as in sulfating rousting, while the pyrometallurgical processes include smelting, chlorination-vaporization and segregation. The paper also covers metal recovery processes from leach liquor. An economic survey of processing nodules has been made in terms of problems associated with metal-marketing, and impact of metal production from nodules on mineral industries.

Description: This chapter discusses the formation and distribution of some metals in ocean-floor manganese nodules in the light of the observed data in the literature and thermodynamic and kinetic considerations of the oxidation of metal ions in the oceanic environment. There are, in general, two major schools of thought on the mechanism of incorporation of the minor elements such as nickel, copper, and cobalt with the major elements such as manganese and iron. One is the lattice substitution mechanism and the other the adsorption mechanism. If the mechanism is lattice substitution, extraction of the metal ions is not possible unless the lattice of the major elements is first broken and exchanged with other ions from the bulk solution. Consequently, the leaching behavior of minor elements should display a very close relationship with that of major elements.

Description: The study of lake deposits containing iron-manganese nodules is of significant interest for the understanding of one of the continental manganese and iron concentration processes. In the USSR, much attention has been given to the formation conditions of ore accumulations in the Leningrad region and Karelia. Semenovich came to the conclusion that Fe super(+3) and Mn super(+4) entered the lake during a long period of drought and were buried together with organic matter of plant origin. In the lake muds, manganese and iron are reduced; readily soluble compounds of Fe super(+2) and Mn super(+2) are transported by bottom waters. Oxidation of iron and manganese to Fe super(+3) and Mn super(+4) occurs, precipitating oxides on the bottom that form nodules and incrustations. This scheme of lacustrine ore genesis by the accumulation of manganese and iron is well founded.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: A complete processing method has been experimentally developed at laboratory scale for the future extraction of metlas from manganese nodules. The digestion of the nodules is performed by pressured sulfuric acid leaching at 200° C., nickel, copper, cobalt, and zinc being selectively dissolved in solution along with iron and manganese. The subsequent separation and recovery of the valuable metals is carried out with a combination of ion exchange and precipitation processes. Estimates for this methodology based on an annual throughput of 2 million tonnes of manganese nodules should lead to the production of about 24000 tonnes of nickel, 20000 tonnes of copper, and 3000 tonnes of cobalt and zinc. The authors conclude that, despite all uncertainty regarding the metal processing costs and the future metal prices, the exploitation of manganese nodules is economically viable.

Description: This DSDP leg was originally conceived by the Antarctic Advisory Panel in order to investigate the geologic histories of the Scotia Arc and of the Argentine Basin. Site 326 (Drake Passage) was drilled in 3812 meters of water about 150 km southeast of Cape Horn. The main objective was to check the magnetic-reversal dating of the opening of Drake Passage by determining basement age. Site 327 is in 2400 meters of water on the western nose of the elevated eastern part of the Falkland Plateau, the Maurice Ewing Bank and was chosen to examine Southern Ocean shallow-water pre-Neogene biostratigraphy. Site 328, in 5103 meters of water in the Malvinas Outer Basin immediately to the east of the Falkland Plateau and to the south of the Falkland Fracture Zone, was chosen to examine correlatives of Argentine Basin acoustic reflectors, to obtain a deep-water southerly biostratigraphic section, and if possible, to date the underlying oceanic basement. Site 330, in 2626 meters of water at the western end of the elongate rise forming the eastern end of the Falkland Plateau, the Maurice Ewing Bank, was selected to elucidate the pre-Aptian history of the Falkland Plateau and to obtain a biostratigraphic section older than that cored at Sites 327 and 329.

Description: Unlike most previous Deep Sea Drilling Project cruises, Leg 39 was not scientifically planned as a "theme" cruise, on which a number of sites are drilled to address a single scientific problem area, namely, to improve our knowledge of paleocirculation changes and the overall geologic history of the South Atlantic Ocean. This would be done along more specific objectives: 1) collect a biostratigraphic section on the Ceará Rise (Site 354), determine the nature and age of a prominent reflector there, and determine the nature and age of basement; 2) date basement between magnetic anomalies 32 and 33 in the Argentine Basin (Site 358), and 33 and 34 in the Brazil Basin (Site 355); obtain as complete sedimentary sections as time would permit at the Ceará Rise, Brazil Basin, the Argentine Basin and Sào Paulo Plateau (Site 356).

Description: During the period of 22-28 July, 1978, five dives were made in the manned submersible ALVIN into the Atlantic Ocean 3800 meter depth radioactive waste disposal site located in the Hudson Canyon channel approximately 320 kilometers from the Maryland-Delaware coast. A geological description of the site was made by direct examination of the bottom topography, bedrock exposures, sedimentary and erosional processes, and sediment cores collected from the dumpsite area. Observations within a depth range of 3985-3830 meters revealed angular blocks and piles of displaced channel wall rock, boulder and cobble olistoliths of Eocene-age chalks derived from higher elevations on the slope, and bedforms such as ripples and scour marks which imply the existence of periodic strong currents. Local benthic fauna were sparse. Three low-level radioactive waste drums were examined from the submersible, and one was subsequently recovered for corrosion, and concrete deterioration analyses. Photographic and visual evidence suggest that downslope transport of objects such as talus blocks, olistoliths, and radioactive waste drums has occurred in this area. These observations complement those made by G. Keller in earlier ALVIN dives performed in 1972 and by the AOML(MG&GL project. COMSED (Continental Margin Sedimentary Processes) cruise performed in 1974 by the R/V Researcher.

Description: Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Legs 64 and 65 were planned as a coordinated drilling investigation of the Gulf of California. The primary goals of Leg 64 were to investigate the early evolution of a passive continental margin and to study hydrothermal systems in the Guaymas Basin. Leg 65 was designed to study the processes of crustal accretion along the relatively fastspreading East Pacific Rise for comparison with the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It was planned to drill a transect across the East Pacific Rise just south of the Tamayo Fracture Zone and to penetrate deep into the crust at one site near the ridge crest. The purpose was to sample crustal sections formed at a relatively fast spreading ridge in order to investigate the processes of crustal accretion in this environment.

Description: Fragments of a hydrothermal deposit, partly moulded on pieces of basalt lava, were dredged from the edge of the median valley in the centre of the Gulf of Aden. The deposit consists of two main components, manganese oxide in the form of spongy brown to hard black lumps and coatings, and friable green massive smectite. There are smaller amounts of an iron-oxide component, and mixed manganese-oxide-smectite material. Contents of the less mobile trace elements in the smectite are too low for it to have formed by alteration of basalt glass, and it is interpreted as a direct precipitate from hydrothermal solution. None of the components is enriched in Cu or Zn, or contains appreciable amounts of sulphur. If there are sulphides in this deposit, they must lie beneath the parts sampled.

Description: The continental edge of eastern North America is the passive margin with the oldest geological history available in the modern oceans. Rifting and seafloor spreading between the North American and African continents began in the late Triassic to Early Jurassic. A possible spreading-center jump and reorganization in spreading at the time of the Blake Spur Magnetic Anomaly (?Bathonian ) left some of the oldest crust on the western margin of the North Atlantic. Penetration and sampling of such old ocean crust and the immediately overlying pelagic sedimentary cover, consisting of Middle Jurassic and younger strata, has long been a key objective in oceanographic research. This objective was accomplished at Site 534.

This cruise was part of Phase I of the DOMES project which was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey under the auspices of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The purpose of DOMES project was to acquire the information necessary to provide both a timely and an independent assessment of the impact of deep ocean manganese nodule mining on the marine ecosystem before commercial mining operations begin. It was formulated in cooperation with the academic community and the mining industry. It consisted of a two-phase study, first to obtain basic information on the deep ocean environment and then to assess the impact of prototype mining operations on that environment.

Description: Quaternary sediments cored in the northeast Pacific nodule area (DOMES site C, 14°N, 126°W) contain a significant amount of hydrothermal metalliferous mud. Water content, color, mineralogy, and chemical composition are analogous to metalliferous sediments of the subequatorial East Pacific Rise. Correction for contribution of pelagic clay indicates the metalliferous fraction to be about 40% of the sediment. SiO2 and Mg are major components in the corrected composition, as they are for other metalliferous sediments similarly corrected from a variety of East Pacific Rise and DSDP metalliferous sediments. A correlation between Mg and SiO2 for these corrected sediments could indicate a hydrothermal origin for a significant portion of the SiO2. Results from DSDP in the nodule area suggest that metalliferous globules are a ubiquitous minor component of the Clipperton Oceanic Formation, which underlies much of the Pacific ferromanganese nodule belt. This indicates that deposition of hydrothermal precipitates is not confined to spreading centers.

Description: Erosion of sediment at two sites within the siliceous-clay province of the northeast equatorial Pacific is investigated by examining radionuclide, radiolarian and percent smectite profiles of three cores. A numerical model of the sediment is presented that examines the effect of various particle rain rates, erosion rates and biological mixing parameters on these profiles. 230Th, because of its longer half-life, is a more sensitive tracer of erosion than231Pa. Because the input of these radionuclides into the sediment is not well defined however, conservative tracers, such as the percent smectite of the clay fraction and fossil radiolarians are used to constrain the rate of sediment recycling. Dissolution of radiolarians though can greatly affect the interpretation of the observed biostratigraphy.

Description: The usually high concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cd, and Cu in the most recently accreted portions of ferromanganese nodules from the western Baltic Sea are thought to reflect increased metal input due to anthropogenic mobilization. If so, the point of increase represents a time horizon within the structure of the nodule. Similar trace metal distributions of radiometrically dated sediments from the same area suggest that the ferromanganese nodules have grown in thickness between 0.02 and 0.16 mm yr-1. From this growth rate anthropogenic Zn flux to the nodule surface was calculated to be 80 mg m-2 yr-1.

Description: Sediments in the area of the Galapagos hydrothermal mounds are divided into two major categories. The first group, pelagic sediments, are nannofossil oozes with varying amounts of siliceous microfossils. The second group are hydrothermal sediments consisting of manganese-oxide crust fragments and green nontronitic clay granules. Hydrothermal sediments occur only in the upper half to two-thirds of the cores and are interbedded and mixed with pelagic sediments. Petrologic evidence indicates that hydrothermal nontronite forms as both a primary precipitate and as a replacement mineral of pre-existing pelagic sediment and hydrothermal manganese-oxide crust fragments. In addition, physical evidence supports chemical equations indicating that the pelagic sediments are being dissolved by hydrothermal solutions. The formation of hydrothermal nontronite is not merely confined to the surface of mounds, but also occurs at depth within their immediate area; hydrothermal nontronite is very likely forming today. Geologically speaking, the mounds and their hydrothermal sediments form almost instantaneously. The Galapagos mounds area is a unique one in the ocean basins, where pelagic sediments can be diagenetically transformed, dissolved, and replaced, possibly within a matter of years.

Description: Clay minerals recovered from the Galapagos hydrothermal mounds (Holes 506C, 507D, and 509B) are mainly iron-rich nontronite-like minerals enriched in potassium. Nontronites from Hole 509B show a distinct tendency to become micaceous toward the lower beds of clay sediments. Mn-crusts consist mainly of todorokite or a mixture of todorokite and nontronite. Minerals of clay and Mnrich sediments in the mounds originated from hydrothermal solutions of uncertain origin. Pelagic oozes from hydrothermal mounds and from areas between mounds (Hole 506D) consist mainly of calcite. In the carbonate beds on or near the hydrothermal mounds an admixture of smectite is often found.

Description: A preliminary report on the manganese nodule field southwest of Western Australia published in this Journal recently (Frakes, Exon and Granath, 1977) quoted chemical analyses which were carried out on air-dried material. Significantly higher metal values have been recorded in some later analyses done on nodules dried at 105°C. Tests have shown that the ground, air-dried material retains considerable moisture, which accounts for the higher metal values of the later analyses. The average water content (after drying at 105°C) has been determined at 16 percent. The relevant chemical data now available on this material are summarised in the accompanying table: in this table metal values (by atomic absorption spectrophotometry) have been recalculated assuming a moisture content of 16 percent.

The results of chemical analyses on each layer of single nodules reveal the periodic patterns of distribution for Mn, Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni and Co contents. The variations strongly suggest that those of the elements in nodules from this region are, at least, climatically controlled.

Mean accumulation rate of these manganese nodules ranges from 2.7 to 8.0 mm/m.y.. The variation of 10Be and 10Be/9Be with depth or time is found to be less than ±30% for periods from 0.4-1.0 m.y. back to 6 m.y. B.P. Surface 10Be/9Be atomic ratio is found to be (9-13) x 10**-8, that shows authigenic nature of manganese nodule acuumulation by comparison with (12-31) x 10-8 for deep-sea water, (2-7) x 10**-8 for clay sediments and (7-9) x 10**-8 for fossil-rich sediments.

Description: It is the purpose of this chapter to present information available at the time of publication on the internal features of manganese nodules, to offer genetic interpretations of these features, and to suggest new lines of research. To judge from the limited data available on ocean floor crusts rich in manganese and iron (see, for example, Aumento et al., 1968, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.862565 ), much of what is learnt about nodules may be applied eventually to an understanding of the origin of these more continuous masses. A genetic relationship between these two is likely.

Description: Two types of deep-sea dredges are currently under development for the mining of the manganese nodules, a deep-sea hydraulic dredge and a mechanical cable-bucket system. Both systems offer some advantages with the hydraulic system appearing to be advantageous in themining of a specific deposit for which it is designed while the cable-bucket system appears to be somewhat more flexible in working in a variety of deposits, topographic environments, and water depths. Environmental studies conducted in conjunction with deep-sea tests of the two types of mining systems currently indicate that substantially no environmental damage will be done in the mining of the deep-sea nodules. Because of the nature of the deposits and the way in which they can be mined, the manganese nodules appear to be a relatively pollution free and energy-saving source of a number of industrially important metals.

Description: The D'Entrecasteaux Zone (Southwest Pacific) is an arched submarine horst- and graben structure, which extends from the northern end of the New Caledonia ridge to the western border of the New Hebrides island arc. A review of the bathymetry, seismic-reflection data, paleomagnetism, gravimetry, seismology and DSDP data available for this area is combined with a study of basaltic samples dredged along the horsts of this regional fracture zone. These basalts show strong petrographic and chemical affinities with MORB. Their fissiontrack ages range between 56 Ma (Paleocene-Eocene boundary) and 36 Ma (Eocene-Oligocene boundary). It is suggested that the D'Entrecasteaux Zone represents the northern arcuate extension of the northeast-dipping Eocene subduction/obduction zone, located along the New Caledonia/Loyalty Islands ridge, while its present morphology appeared from post-obduction extensional movements, resulting in a progressive uplift of basaltic ocean floor since Middle Miocene times.

Description: Manganese nodules from the Suiko Seamount exhibit the significant characteristics in mineral compositions. Well crystallized todorokite and birnessite, which are principal manganese mineral phase in nodules, only occur in the oxide layer directly incasing pebbles and coarse sand. The preferential formation of todorokite or birnessite phases seem to be principally controlled by the reaction rate of iron-manganese oxides with trace elements such as Cu, Ni, Co, Zn, Pb concentrated in nodules, rather than redox characteristics of sedimentary environment or mineralogical diagenetic process.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Manganese nodules collected from three areas (C, F, and G) on a N-S equatorial Pacific transect at 134° W by R. V. Sonne show differences in size, morphology, surface density and composition which can best be interpreted in terms of the biogenic theory of nodule formation. These data indicate that the biogenic hypothesis is central to an understanding of manganese nodule genesis in the equatorial Pacific and in particular influences the nodule shape, surface texture, rate of growth, composition, and mineralogy. The nodule characteristics in this region are also influenced by the hydrological characteristics of the bottom water, sedimentation rates, local geological and tectonic conditions (including seeding eflects) and topography.

Petrology and chemistry of basalts from the East Pacific Rise and the Siqueiros Transform Fault. Journal of Geophysical Research, 82(2), 265-276, https://doi.org/10.1029/JB082i002p00265

Description: Basalt samples obtained from the Siqueiros transform fault/fracture zone and the adjacent East Pacific Rise are mostly very fresh oceanic tholeiite and fractionated oceanic tholeiite with Fe+3/ Fe+2 ? 0.25; however, alkali basalts occur in the area as well. The rocks of the tholeiitic suite are ol + pl phyric and ol + pl + cpx phyric basalts, while the alkali basalts are ol and ol + pl phyric. Microprobe analyses of the tholeiitic suite phenocrysts indicate that they are Fo68-Fo86, An58-An75, and augite (Ca34Mg50Fe16). The range of olivine and plagioclase compositions represents the chemical variation of the phenocryst compositions with fractionation. The phenocyrsts in the alkali basalts are Fo81 and An69. The suite of tholeiites comprises a fractionation series characterized by relative enrichment of Fe, Ti, Mn, V, Na, K, and P and depletion of Ca, Al, Mg, Ni, and Cr. The fractionated tholeiites occur on the median ridge (which is a sliver of normal oceanic crust) of the double Siqueiros transform fault, on the western Siqueiros fracture zone, and on the adjoining East Pacific Rise, while the two transform fault troughs contain mostly unfractionated or only slightly fractionated tholeiite. We suggest that the fractionated tholeiites are produced by fractional crystallization of more 'primitive' tholeiitic liquid in a crustal magma chamber below the crest of the East Pacific Rise. This magma chamber may be disrupted by the transform fault troughs, thus explaining the paucity of fractionated tholeiites in the troughs. The alkali basalts are found only on the flanks of a topographic high near the intersection of the northern transform trough with the East Pacific Rise.
