Description: A real time reflectometer with the particular utility of measuring fairly rapid (transient) changes in the specular reflectance of a sample which is continuously exposed to a perturbing environment is described. A fixed radiation source, a fixed detector, a uniformly rotating sample wheel, and a uniformly rotating optical wheel protect against misalignment problems. The reflectometer operates by comparing the measurings of a reflected signal with that of a reference signal made within fractions of a second of one another. Reflectance is measured in the infrared, visible, and vacuum ultraviolet regions.

Description: Modifications to prior theory yield expressions for the frequency response and equivalent lumped elements of a condenser microphone in terms of its fundamental geometrical and material properties. Results of the analysis show excellent agreement with experimental data taken on B&K pressure microphone types 4134 and 4146.

Description: A condenser microphone AM carrier system, which has been developed to measure pressure fluctuations at elevated temperatures, consists of the following components: a condenser microphone designed for operation at elevated temperatures; existing carrier electronics developed under two previous research grants but adapted to meet present requirements; a 6 m cable operating as a half-wavelength transmission line between the microphone and carrier electronics; and a voltage-controlled oscillator used in a feedback loop for automatic tuning control. Both theoretical and practical aspects of the development program are considered. The three predominant effects of temperature changes are changes in the membrane-backplate gap, membrane tension, and air viscosity. The microphone is designed so that changes in gap and membrane tension tend to have compensating effects upon the microphone sensitivity.

Description: Two spectral features have been detected toward the Kleinmann-Low infrared nebula in Orion that agree in frequency with the 7(25)-7(16) and 7(35)-7(26) rotational transitions of the ring-structured molecule ethylene oxide (CH2)2O. A feature agreeing in frequency with the 8(24)-8(45) transition probably also was detected; however, seven other transitions in (CH2)2O were not. Additional unidentified lines were detected in Ori A and Sgr B2. Searches for H(C-14)N and (C-14)O in the luminous carbon star IRC +10216 were unsuccessful. However, an unidentified line was found in IRC +10216 that was not detected in the KL nebula.

Description: The heliocentric radial and latitudinal distributions of both small and large meteoritic particles appear to demonstrate that these particles have largely derived from comets in short-period orbits. Asteroids are unlikely to be a major source for the dust. There appears to be a spatial density depletion near the orbit of the earth, indicating significant control by the earth over particles or source bodies that come near it. Although many short-term fluctuations of meteoritic activity are observed, the content of the overall interplanetary meteoritic complex has probably been stable to within a factor of 2 within approximately the last 10,000 yr. This conclusion, together with meteoroid impact-pit and solar-flare track data on lunar rocks, suggests that solar flare activity may have been much higher about 10,000 yr ago than the present average rate.

Description: The ratio of L-alpha to H-alpha is around unity in flares, quasars, and the solar chromosphere and prominences. The weakness of L-alpha is shown to be essentially due to photon trapping and deexcitation, but it is argued that the surprising stability of this ratio is due to the role of these lines in cooling the plasma rather than the accidental parameters used in various models of these widely different phenomena.

Description: Results of the first traverse measurement of the magnetic field on the surface of the moon are analyzed. The mean value of the magnetic field in the portion of Le Monnier Bay investigated is estimated at 20 to 30 gammas. An anomaly of the field was disclosed, which is confined to craters that exceed 50 meters in size.

Description: Large positive anomalies have been discovered in the moon's gravitational field. The concept of mascons as the source of these anomalies was reviewed. Ideas set forth in the literature and related in some manner to mascons are summarized. Lunar structure and evolution are emphasized and it is concluded that more detailed studies of the moon by spacecraft are needed to solve remaining uncertainties.

Description: Results of the Mossbauer effect measurements on Fe-57 in the average sample of the Luna 20 regolith, and their comparison with similar measurements of the Luna 16 samples are presented. Room temperature measurements of the nonmagnetic as well as magnetic components of the spectra were performed. By careful least-squares analysis, six quadrupole doublets in the inner parts of spectra were resolved. According to their splittings, they were interpreted as four types of iron in silicates (olivine, two inequivalent pyroxene sites, and a glassy fraction) and two types of nonmagnetic iron-titanium oxides (ilmenite and a spinel). Velocity-window measurements, were used to determine the average nickel content of (2.01 plus or minus 0.84) wt. %. These results are discussed in terms of distribution of iron among different phases. In comparison with the Luna 16 sample, the Luna 20 sample contains more olivine and less ilmenite as well as metal with a slightly higher nickel content.

Description: Reflection polarimetry is a remote-sensing tool sensitive to the refractive index and microtexture of solid surfaces. Mechanisms producing linear polarization within a rough, porous, or particulate surface are discussed, and laboratory techniques for precise measurements are described in some detail. Polarimetry of atmosphereless solar-system bodies provides valuable indications of albedo for objects too small and distant for direct diameter determinations, and reveals that even quite small asteroids and satellites have particulate surfaces
