Notizen: Abstract Two pool fire tests for solvent burning were made to obtain the burning rate and the mass loss rate from burning pans under atmosphere and ventilation in a cell. From the data, burning parameters for the Spalding's modified model reported in Part I were determined in steady-state pool burning.

Notizen: Abstract Modeling based on Spalding's theory was undertaken to obtain information on a solvent pool fire under atmosphere and ventilation in steady-state burning. The model comprised the modified B-number with burning parameters governing the burning rate of solvent. Mass loss rate and burning rate of solvent from the burning pan were governed by heat conduction through the pan wall for small pans and by turbulent free convective heat transfer for large pans.

Notizen: Abstract Differential effects of a particular small women's college environment on the attrition of its students were studied. Two separate entering classes, a total of 330Ss were classified into four categories, Persisters, Withdrawers, Academic Withdrawers, and Returners, and were compared on 35 personality and demographic characteristics, using as primary measures the 15 scales of the omnibus personality inventory. Conclusions, drawn from the data on persisters and withdrawers, were that: (a) no consistent differences appeared in demographic characteristics, (b) as hypothesized, students who withdrew were more complex and more autonomous, (c) the hypothesis that withdrawers would be more impulsive was not supported, and (d) as predicted, persisters differed from withdrawers on social introversion, intellectual disposition, and practical outlook. The study supports the thesis that important personality characteristics discriminate between persisters and withdrawers.

Notizen: Abstract The impact of university student living groups on freshmen students' personal and social development was assessed. The social environments of 42 student living groups were measured by the University Residence Environment Scale, which assesses 10 salient dimensions of the social environment. Indices of student personal and social growth were assessed by a biographical and experience questionnaire at the beginning and the end of the freshman year. The social environments of the living groups had differential impacts on student interactions and activities and student self-descriptions and feelings. For example, living groups that emphasized academic achievement facilitated negative affect and exhaustion and inhibited artistic appreciation and impulsive-deviancy. Student living groups constitute important subenvironments which should be assessed in future college impact studies.

Notizen: Abstract The primary purpose of this study is to describe the extent of college transfers over two years since initial matriculation and to examine differences in background characteristics between transfers and nontransfers (i.e., persisters, withdrawals, and graduates). Data involved a national probability sample of the 1972 entering class. Major findings include the following: 25% of the 2-year college students transferred to a 4-year institution, and 16% of 4-year college students moved to another 4-year institution. This later group of students tended to hold higher socioeconomic status and college grades but lower ability test scores than persisters. Implications of the findings are also discussed.

Notizen: Abstract The problems of response bias in longitudinal studies of college students are examined. An extensive follow-up questionnaire was sent to 1,253 college seniors who had participated in a similar survey as freshman four years earlier. Careful measure of student responsiveness in relation to various techniques designed to increase the proportion of responders (e.g., postcard, telephone contact) were kept. The less responsive groups were significantly different from their more responsive counterparts on nearly a dozen variables representing a wide variety of content areas, including academic achievement, self-concept, alcohol consumption, social deviance, and major choice preferences. Controlling for sex and socioeconomic status served to reduce, but not eliminate, these biases. Overall, the results indicate that researchers cannot account for follow-up nonresponse bias by making statistical adjustments according to data available at initial testing. The results are discussed in light of identifying the reasons for nonresponse, and attempting to develop categories of nonresponders who may be motivated to cooperate by different types of follow-up techniques.

Notizen: Abstract This study assessed the relative influence on attrition of students' precollege characteristics, their experiences and perceptions of the freshman year, and the interactions of sex, major, and racial or ethnic origin with those experiences and perceptions. A series of stepwise multiple regression analyses indicated that precollege traits are not significantly related to attrition, that integration in the academic systems of the institution may be more important than involvement in the social systems, and that certain interactions between precollege traits and freshman year experiences and perceptions may be the most important. The findings suggest that attrition reduction efforts may need to be focused on what happens to students after they arrive on campus, on academic areas, and perhaps on the development of selective plans designed for different kinds of students.

Notizen: Abstract This is a review of the recent literature on student characteristics and their predictive potential for academic achievement. Results are not optimistic, often contradictory, and on the whole account for little variance beyond that accounted for by tests of intellectual ability. Researchers often use different performance criteria and so results are not comparable. However, there has been much complex, diverse, and unique work done on personality and motivational factors but no clear trends have emerged. Other factors investigated have been home and class background, study habits, previous withdrawal, and expectations. The review concludes by demonstrating the usefulness of the cluster analysis approach which indicates groups of students with similar patterns of characteristic criteria.

Notizen: Abstract A variety of data was collected about students in the liberal arts college of a major metropolitan university. Random samples of 120 students were selected from each of two groups: “stayers” and “leavers.” The data include only those variables that would be known to administrators at the time an admissions decision is to be made. These data were then subjected to a stepwise linear discriminant analysis. Significant results are found for discriminating between the two groups, and nine variables are found to contribute to the discrimination.
