Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ein wichtiges Ergebnis der Komplexitätstheorie ist der Umbenennungssatz von E. M. McCreight, der besagt, daß es einen Algorithmus σ gibt, der alle Namen ϕi des Systems der Komplexitätsklassen in neue Namen ϕσ(i) überführt, derart, daß die neuen Namen die Schrittmaßbedingung „λi,n,m[ϕσ(i)(n)≦m] entscheidbar” erfüllen.
Notes: Abstract An important result in the theory of complexity classes is the naming theorem of E. M. McCreight, which states that the system of complexity classes can be renamed uniformly by a measured set of names. Our investigation of honesty classes shows that for these classes the analogous assertion is false. No measured transformation of programs renames correctly all honesty classes.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract In analogy to the well known rudimentary predicates some predicates are considered which are constructed by logical operations from basic finite-automatondecidable attributes. It is shown that all sets of words definable by these predicates are regular. A similar results holds, if one changes to Σ-valued trees and finite automata on Σ-valued trees.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The general duality theory of Rockafellar will be applied to some convex optimization problems in order to get duality, existence and characterization theorems for optimal solutions. Among other things, in this way one recovers some well-known results in a very simple manner.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with general loop systems in which each of several buffered units may exchange data with any other unit via a single oneway loop channel. The traffic is described in terms of stationary stochastic processes with independent increments. The queues of data waiting for transmission which develop at the different units are investigated. The queueing discipline assumed here accords data with longer transmission paths preemptive priority over those with shorter paths. For such systems expected queue lengths and waiting times in the steady state are calculated for all units and priority classes. An equivalence is established between general loop systems and systems of a much simpler structure and is used in the derivation.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A method to construct test matrices with free parameters is given. As an example of application a new test matrix of even order which is also appropriate to the eigenproblem is derived. Moreover some known test matrices with constant elements are generalized in such a way that they can be supplied with condition numbers of arbitrary order.

Notes: Abstract Algorithms for the numerical solution of optimal control problems with bounded state variables are developed. Two main cases are considered: either the control variable appears nonlinearly or the control variable appears linearly. In the first case, an extremal are touching the boundary or containing a boundary arc, is shown to satisfy a suitable two-point boundary value problem. In the second case, a numerical idea for solving the problem in statespace is presented which dispenses with the Lagrange-multipliers. Three numerical examples are discussed illustrating the efficiency of the different algorithms. The encountered two-point boundary value problems are solved with the method of multiple shooting.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract If the cutting plane method is applied formally to the computation of flows with minimal costs then repeatedly negative cycles have to be determined. Up to now this can be done only with algorithms which are relatively clumsy. A modification of the algorithm enables us to avoid the search of such cycles and to generate an effective algorithm. At the same time we obtain stimulations for other numerical procedures, e. g., it becomes apparent how to proceed, when the approximation of the (nonlinear) cost function is successively improved.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ein beschränktes, konvexes PolyederP inR n wird meistens als Durchschnitt endlich vieler Halbräume beschrieben.
Notes: Abstract A bounded, convex polyhedronP inR n can be defined as the intersection of a finite number of halfspaces. Frequently, such polyhedronsP form the feasible regions of optimization problems; sometimes an optimum can only be determined when all vertices ofP are known. This paper describes an algorithm to enumerate these vertices with the help of graphs and a concept by Mañas and Nedoma [2]. Using this algorithm, it will be attempted to estimate the expected number of vertices of the examples employed by Liebling [1].

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The convergence rate of the Chebyshev series of an analytic function depends on the singularities. In analgy to the Euler transformation we propose a method based on conformal mapping. By this means one obtains an improvement of the convergence rate and an enlargement of the domain where the series converges. In the special case of a linear transformation we find out a connection to the Euler-Knopp method. Finally we give applications to approximation problems and treat some examples.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract We introduce the concept of a (numerical) algorithm and the following properties: consistency, local and global stability, numerical convergence. We exhibit classes of such algorithms with the following property: consistency and local stability together with a suitable termination criterion imply numerical convergence. It is shown that all known results in the literature may be deduced from two theorems on monotone algorithms.

Notes: Abstract Generalizing earlier work ofJ. Galambos and the present author a model of a class of transformations mapping the unit interval into itself is proposed. This class contains the classical series expansions of Sylvester and Engel, the algorithm of Pierce and a lot of their genralizations. The main result is an ergodic theorem: the space mean of a certain sequence equals the time mean almost every-where.

Notes: Abstract The present paper deals with the application of the theory developed in part I to some elliptic differential equations. Representations of solutions of this differential equations are given by generalized power series and by Bergman integral operators respectively. For in an annulus bounded solutions a generalisation of the three circle theorem due to Hadamard is derived in two different manners. The application of theorems of part I gives the first case and the second one uses the aid of a fundamental system of solutions of an associated ordinary differential equation. This fundamental system is also represented by an integral operator of Bergman type.

Notes: Abstract A. K. Steiner undE. F. Steiner described the socalled natural topology κ on spacesA B of transfinite sequences (a β), β∈B,a β∈A [J. Math. Anal. Appl.19, 174–178 (1967)]. These spaces generalize Baire's zerodimensional sequence-spaces. Using these spaces (A B, κ), we generalize two well known theorems of F. Hausdorff, W. Hurewicz, C. Kuratowski and K. Morita on metric spaces and their Lebesgue-dimension respectively, both involving Baire's sequence spaces. Thus we obtain a topological characterization of uniform spaces $$(X,\mathfrak{U})$$ with a linearly ordered base $$\mathfrak{B}$$ of $$\mathfrak{U}$$ .

The main results are the following: (a) A topological space ism-Lindelöf if and only if it is meta-m-Lindelöf and it ism-Lindelöf in the sense of complete accumulation point. (b) A regular topological space is paracompact if and only if it is para-m-Lindelöf and it hasm-closure preserving property for somem.

Notes: Abstract A sufficient condition for the existence of an invariant measure is given that is useful in number theory. A connection with a problem of Blum is pointed out. Kuzmin's theorem is considered from an operator point of view, and the Chacon-Ornstein theorem is applied to give almost everywhere Cesaro convergence to the density of the invariant measure.

Notes: Abstract LetR be a ring with non-zero identity and unitary leftR-modules, while $$\mathcal{N}_R $$ is the subcategory of NoetherianR-modules. Given a length functionL on $$\mathcal{N}_R $$ and central elements α1,...,α n ofR we can define the multiplicity length functione R (L|α1,...α n |) on $$\mathcal{N}_R $$ with the same properties as the classical multiplicity. Here, we characterise multiplicity as the greatest length function which can be defined inductively in terms of a certain type of function on $$\mathcal{N}_R $$ .

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we obtain analogues, in the situation of $$\mathfrak{E}$$ -extensions, of Magill's theorem on lattices of compactifications. We define an epireflective subcategory of the categoryT 2 of all Hausdorff spaces to be admissive (respectively finitely admissive) if for any $$\mathfrak{E}$$ -regular spaceX, every Hausdorff quotient of $$\beta _\mathfrak{E} X$$ which is Urysohn on $$\beta _\mathfrak{E} X - X$$ (respectively which is finitary on $$\beta _\mathfrak{E} X - X$$ ) and which is identity onX, has $$\mathfrak{E}$$ . We notice that there are many proper epireflective subcategories ofT 2 containing all compact spaces and which are admissive; there are many such which are not admissive but finitely admissive. We prove that when $$\mathfrak{E}$$ is a finitely admissive epireflective subcategory ofT 2, then the lattices of finitary $$\mathfrak{E}$$ -extensions of two spacesX andY are isomorphic if and only if $$\beta _\mathfrak{E} X - X$$ and $$\beta _\mathfrak{E} Y - Y$$ are homeomorphic. Further if $$\mathfrak{E}$$ is admissive, then the lattices of Urysohn $$\mathfrak{E}$$ -extensions ofX andY are isomorphic if and only if $$\beta _\mathfrak{E} X - X$$ and $$\beta _\mathfrak{E} Y - Y$$ are homeomorphic.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the four colour conjecture is equivalent to a conjecture on the existence of spanning Eulerian subgraphs of a certain type in triangulations of the plane. From this, a simple proof of Heawood's Equivalence Theorem is given. Moreover, an elementary operation is defined for triangulations of the plane; and by repeated application of this operation one can construct a given colouring from another given colouring.

Notes: Abstract The following problem is due toL. Fejes Tóth: For a given sort of lamps letf(x) be the intensity of brightness in each point having distancex from the foot of the lamp. How must infinitely many lamps of this kind be arranged on a both-side infinite rectilinear road, such that the infimum of the intensities of brightness, extended over the whole street, is maximal, subject to the condition that the average number of lamps per kilometer is bounded by a fixed number (“Best distributions”)? The main result of this paper is: Iff is strictly convex, the equidistant distribution is best.

Notes: Abstract The functionalW(A), defined by J. M. Wills for all convex bodiesA in then-dimensional Euclidean space, is a linear expression $$W(A) = \sum\nolimits_0^n {\left( {\begin{array}{*{20}c} n \\ v \\ \end{array} } \right)\frac{1}{{\omega _v }}W_v (A)} $$ , whereW v is the “vth Quermaß-integral” andω v stands for the volume of thev-dimensional unit ball. In the present note several remarkable properties ofW(A) are explained. Especially, we have Wills's conjectureG(A)≤W(A), whereG(A) is the number of points of then-dimensional unit lattice contained inA.

Notes: Abstract All circles having the same tangent in one of the two absolute pointsJ, $$\bar J$$ are said to be semi-concentric. They form a special net of conics Σ. By means of a complex conformal transformationT, Σ corresponds to the system Σ′ of the straight lines. Congruent circles in Σ correspond to parallel lines in Σ′. Moebius geometry in Σ is shown to be a model of the plane euclidean geometry. Furthermore, the plane is projected stereographically onto a Riemannian sphere; thenT corresponds to a biaxial involutionT 1 which transforms the sphere into itself. The circles of Σ correspond to the intersections of the sphere with the planes passing throughJ. Finally, for a curvec having an ordinary point inJ, it follows thatc possesses inJ generally a well-defined radius of curvature but an infinite number of circles of curvature; one of them hyperosculatesc inJ. ByT, these circles correspond to a pencil of parallel lines. There are also considered examples of several special curves passing throughJ and $$\bar J$$ .

Notes: Abstract In this paper we study the Fourier transform of unbounded measures on a locally compact groupG. After a short introductory section containing background material, especially results established byL. Argabright andJ. Gil De Lamadrid we turn to the main subjects of the paper: first we characterize $$\Re \left( G \right), \mathfrak{J}\left( G \right)$$ andB(G) cones in $$\mathfrak{W}\left( G \right)$$ . After that we establish the subspace $$\mathfrak{W}_\Delta \left( G \right)$$ of $$\mathfrak{W}\left( G \right)$$ which contains $$\mathfrak{W}_p \left( G \right)$$ , the linear span of all positive definite measures.

Notes: Abstract By means of the general form of Stokes' theorem on manifolds a divergence theorem is derived for hypersurfaces which bound a compact region of ann-dimensional Finsler spaceF n . In general the integrand of then-fold volume integral will depend on the covariant derivatives of an arbitrary vector field which defines the element of support; certain conditions under which this dependence may be circumvented are discussed. The scalar curvature ofF n is expressed in terms of the divergence of a certain vector field: forn=2 this formula reduces to a particularly simple form, and its substitution into the aforementioned divergence theorem gives rise to a formula which represents a generalization of the classical Gauss-Bonnet Theorem.

Notes: Abstract An earlier paper (Mh. Math.51, 278–297 (1949)) exploited the property ‖∣Tx‖∣2≤‖∣x‖∣ ‖∣T 2 x‖∣, and the same property for polynomials in the operatorT, as an aid in establishing spectral resolutions associated withT. The present paper uses the weaker property ‖∣T‖∣=‖∣T 2‖∣1/2=..., and its extension to polynomials, for the same purpose. Also considered are the possibility of equivalence between the two types of conditions, and the use of arithmethical hypotheses concerning the eigenvalues.

Notes: Abstract The geometries associated with uncomplete nearfields (pseudoaffine spaces) are considered. The properties concerning incidence and the existence of a sharply transitive group of translations in pseudoaffine spaces give rise to the introduction of a new class of incidence structures (pseudotranslationstructures). In analogy to the equivalence between translationstructures and partitions of groups a canonical correspondence between pseudotranslationstructures with distinguished points and “pseudopartitions of groups” is established. Necessary conditions for a pseudopartition to result from the geometry associated with an uncomplete nearfield and examples of pseudotranslationstructures which can't be deduced from such geometries are given.

Notes: Abstract In view of Kogbetliantz's identity [7] the absolute Cesáro summability of orderk (k)〉−1) of an infinite seriesΣ a n is the same as the absolute convergence ofΣ(τ n k )n −1 whereτ n k is then-th Cesáro mean of orderk of sequence {na n }.Das [5] has shown that similar dependence is true for certain classes of Nörlund means. The object of this paper is to establish two theorems on absolute summability factors involving two lower-semimatrix transformations and thereby to generalise a result ofChow [3] on absolute Cesáro summability factors and a result ofBosanquet andDas [1] on absolute Harmonic summability factors.

The free compositionR(x, $$\mathfrak{B}$$ ) ofR and the free algebra of $$\mathfrak{B}$$ generated byx, is called the $$\mathfrak{B}$$ -polynomial ring inx the variety of rings, rings with identity, commutative rings or commutative rings with identity resp. Notes: Abstract A generalization of ordinary renewal processes has been treated byHinderer and the author: for the stochastic process with values in ℝ+ the aim is (a,a+β) with 0≦a〈∞, 0〈β≦∞ instead of (a, ∞), and a possible passing over the aim is replaced by a phase of stagnation. In the present paper for the open case of an infinite mean length of the undisturbed steps the relationV(a)/a→0(a→∞), with β fixed, for the mean waiting timeV(a) until reaching the aim is obtained. The proof uses the theory of inversepositive operators ofCollatz andSchröder. This concept also yields an elementary proof of the so-called elementary renewal theorem. Finally the Tauberian theorem ofIkehara inAgmon's version is generalized; it yields the so-called general renewal theorem in the case of finite mean length of the steps, which is also a corollary of a general Tauberian theorem ofBeneš.

Notes: Abstract In Schwartz' terminology, a real or complex valued functionf, defined and infinitely differentiable on ℝ n , belongs to $$\mathfrak{O}_M $$ iff, as well as any of its derivatives, is at most of polynomial growth. The topology of $$\mathfrak{O}_M $$ is defined by the seminorms sup{∣ϕ(x)D p f(x)∣;x∈ℝ n }, where ϕ belongs to $$\mathfrak{S}$$ andD p is any derivative. It is well-known that $$\mathfrak{O}_M $$ is non-metrisable. For any μ: ℕ n →ℕ, let $$\mathfrak{B}_\mu $$ be the space of all infinitely differentiable functionsf satisfying, for eachp, sup{∣(1+∣x∣2)−μ(p) D p f(x)∣;x∈ℝ n }〈∞, with the obvious topology. These spaces, which are of very little use elsewhere in the theory of distributions, can be conveniently applied to characterise the metrisable linear subspaces of $$\mathfrak{O}_M $$ : A linear subspace of $$\mathfrak{O}_M $$ is metrisable if and only if it is, algebraically and topologically, a subspace of some $$\mathfrak{B}_\mu $$ .

Notes: Abstract The algebraic surfaces of revolution considered in this paper are generated either (a) by a circle or a lemniscate, or (b) by a Cartesian oval or especially a limaçon of Pascal. The absolute circle at infinity is a double curve for the cyclides of type (a), in particular a cuspidal curve for the cyclides of type (b). Continuing earlier investigations on general cyclides there are deduced several remarkable properties of the spherical quartics situated on the mentioned cyclides of revolution.

Notes: Abstract A direct product decomposition is given for the multiplicative semigroup of a finite near integral domain in terms of the subsemigroup of left identities and a group of automorphisms on the additive group of the domain. Conditions are given which insure that every element will have a uniquen-th root. If there existsx≠0 such that (−x)y=−(xy), for eachy, then the additive group of the near integral domain is abelian. Other conditions sufficient for the commutativity of the additive group are given. An example illustrates that non-isomorphic finite near integral domains can have a left ideal decomposition into Sylow subgroups which are isomorphic as near-rings. Another example shows that an infinite near integral domain need not have a nilpotent additive group, even in the d. g. case. It is conjectured that for each natural numbern there is a near integral domain whose additive group is of nilpotent classn.

Notes: Abstract If the sidesOA andOB of a linked parallelogramOACB rotate with constant and different velocities about the fixed pivotO, then the jointC describes a trochoid. The polhodes connected with the motion of the linksAC andBC are throughout circles, and this leads to the well-known double generation of each trochoid by circle rolling. In the present paper the parallelogram ist replaced by an antiparallelogram. The path ofC, called “antitrochoid”, is inversive to a trochoid and may be generated, in double way again, by the rolling of a conic on a fixed polhode which is derivable from another conic by multiplying all polar angles with a constant factor. The new family of remarkable plane curves is investigated both by analytical and by purely geometrical methods.

    Notes: Abstract In the literature there are known homogeneous polynomialsP(x 1,...,x n) with real coefficients, for which $$P(x_1 ,...,x_n ) \leqslant P(\bar x,...,\bar x)$$ for allx i≥0, and $$\bar x = (x_1 + ... + x_n )/n$$ . This paper gives two theorems, which lead to new polynomials of this kind.

Notes: Abstract The graphs considered are finite and undirected, loops do not occur. An induced subgraphI of a graphX is called animitation ofX, if 1. the degreesd I(v)≡d X(v) (mod 2) for allv∈V(I) 2. eachu∈V(X)−V(I) is connected with the setv(I) by an even number of edges. If the set of imitations ofX consists only ofX itself, thenX is anexclusive graph. AHamiltonian graph of degree n (abbr.:HG n) in the sense ofA. Kotzig is ann-regular graph (n〉1) with a linear decomposition and with the property, that any two of the linear components together form a Hamiltonian circuit of the graph. In the first chapter some theorems concerning exclusive graphs and Euler graphs are stated. Chapters 2 deals withHG n′ s and bipartite graphs. In chapters 3 a useful concept—theX-graph of anHG n—is defined; in this paper it is the conceptual connection between exclusive graphs andHG n′ s, since a graphG is anHG n, if all itsX-graphs are exlusive. Furthermore, some theorems onX-graphs are proved. Chapter 4 contains the quintessence of the paper: If we want to construct a newHG n F from anotherHG n G, we can consider certain properties of theX-graphs ofG to decide whetherF is also anHG n.

Notes: Abstract In Part 1 we obtained lower and upper bounds of the expressionf(M φ(x;α),M ψ(y;α))−M χ(f(x,y);α) by replacing the given sets(x)=(x 1,...,x n ),(y)=(y 1,...,y n ) by two suitably chosen sets ((u)=(u 1,...,u m ),(v)=(v 1,...,v m ), in general withm≥4. Now, in the case of upper bounds, the numberm will, under additional hypotheses, be reduced tom=3 (§ 4) and finally tom=2 (§ 5). Inequalities, complementary to the inequalities of Hölder and Minkowski and to another inequality are given as illustrations.

Notes: Abstract In this article a new method of representing the projective spaceR 4 in the three-dimensional space Σ is described. This method is based on the stereographical projection of a hypersphere and transfers the straight lines, planes and hyperplanes ofR 4 into the couples of points, circles and spheres of Σ; the points of theR 4 are represented by the inversions on the spheres of Σ.

Notes: Abstract Suppose thatG is a compact Lie group and that Γ denotes a maximal set of inequivalent irreducible unitary continuous representations ofG. In a recent paperCecchini showed that a necessary (and sufficient) condition for $$E \subseteq \Gamma $$ to be a local central Λ(4) set is that sup{d(γ)∶γ∈E}〈∞, whered(γ) is the dimension of γ. The main result below is thatevery subset of Γ is local central Λ (2). In addition, whenG isU(n) orSU(n), n≥2, it is shown that every subset of Γ is local central Λ(p) for allp〈2+2/n. An example ofRider shows that this is best possible.

Notes: Abstract Making use of an earlier result of the theory of stripes in three-dimensional conformal spaceM 3 we obtain a moving frame and derivational formulas for one-parameter families of tangent circles inM 3. Avoiding invariant parameters we can set up a bijection of the tangent circles into the osculating circles that preserves the duple ratio. The following section deals with loxodromes on Dupin cyclides. Finally with the aid of a modified stereographic projection we show how to get the Frenet formulas of the euclidian theory of spacecurves from the derivational formulas for tangent circles inM 3.

Notes: Abstract LetC be an analytic Jordan curve, letG be the interior ofC, and letU (w) be (at least) continuous onC. Here the solution of the Dirichlet problemu(w) which coincides withU(w) onC is approximated by harmonic polynomials. These harmonic polynomialsF n F(w) are determined by interpolatingU(w) in a given point system. Notes: Abstract Analogues of ring theory results concerning the Jacobson radical of a regular ring are obtained for near-rings with a two-sided zero. The quasiradical and the radical-subgroup of a regular near-ring are shown to be {0}. Some sufficient conditions are obtained for the radical and the primitiveradical of a regular near-ring to be {0}. Notes: Summary The research work for the culture of yeasts on hydrocarbon substrates has started in 1959 at the research laboratory of Lavera in France, underChampagnat as leader. Its result is the construction and exploitation of 2 industrial plants in France and England, and a new big one is being built in Italy. The paper describes the various hydrocarbon substrates in use or proposed, and the two BP processes. It gives the main characteristics of the yeasts produced. It emphasizes the methods used for the evaluation of the yeasts both toxicologically and nutritionally by independent organizations of international level. A number of tables are given upon the nutritional performances of the yeasts on farm animals. Authorizations of use have been obtained from the hygiene authorities of the main European countries. The use for human consumption is now being considered.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary If we admit the hyperammoniemy as one of the factors of portal systemic encephalopathy, then the decrease in protidic contribution seems justified. But the prescription of a long-term lav-protein diet in cirrhosis, with portal hypertension, with spontaneous or surgical porto case shunts is unsatisfactory; because it is necessary to give the maximum amount of protein compatible with a normal psychic state, in order to let the hepatic cells regenerate and to restrain nitrogenous catabolism. The authors relate their experiences with another diet, with an adequate (80 g) and balanced (15%) protidic untake, essentially provided by milk products (with lav-sodium content if necessary). This diet not only induces an encephalopathy aggravation, but on the contrary helps to cure it. These products are well tolerated because of the bacteriological and biochemical composition of milk and cheese, which changes the equilibrium of the intestinal flora in favour of a flora without ammonium. The results of this well tolerated diet offer particular interest in the sequels of surgical porto cave anastomosis, but depend obviously on the degree of hepatic cellular insufficiency which condition the liver's inhibition of protein intake.

Notes: Summary In recent years, there have been conclusive findings in the field of maintaining homeostasis following trauma, bleeding, nutritional and metabolic disturbances and infections. These findings can help save the lives of an increasing number of injured and sick by enlarging the therapeutic possibilities which have previously been unimaginable. This development has been made possible by the good cooperation of both basic research and clinical staff whose common aim was to achieve advances in this field of intensive care. The aim of the present study is to make a relevant theoretical and practical contribution to the widening possibilities and necessities in this field.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The purpose of the present article is to give a survey of present knowledge of the ecological relationships between the various bacterial populations composing the microflora of the digestive tract of the host animal. Analysis of the relationships can be made with the aid of recent techniques: utilization of axenic animals (germ-free) and of gnotoxenic animals inoculated with known bacterial populations; perfecting of bacteriological techniques for the quantitative differential analysis of the various bacterial populations in the digestive tract, especially in the case of strictly anaerobic species. Some characteristics of the equilibrium between the various bacterial populations in the different segments of the gastro-intestinal tract have been described as well as some of the mechanisms which regulate this equilibrium. These mechanisms either imply interactions between bacteria or the action of the host animal and the environment on the microflora. Lastly, various examples concerning the action of the microflora in the digestive tract on the nutritional physiology of the host animal are given; action on the anatomy of the digestive tract and on the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and vitamins.

Notes: Summary In feeding experiments no differences could be observed when used frying fats were fed to rats in the same amount and over the same period if compared with the unheated fats (partially hardened groundnut oil, soyabean oil). In details we investigated: concentration of plasma lipids including content of total cholesterol, electrophoresis of plasma lipoproteins, fatty acid composition of plasma lipids and of adipose tissue. Amount and composition of the unsaponifiable matter in heated and unheated fats as well as the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were determined. In in-vitro experiments we investigated the effect of pancreas lipase on these fats.

Notes: Summary This study aimed at investigating the effect of different sources of dietary fibre on gallstone formation in hamsters. The substances studied were pectin, lignin and psyllium hydrocolloid. The two latter compounds protected hamsters against cholesterol gallstone formation. Lignin resulted in a decrease of the deoxycholic acid concentration and in a rise of the cholic/chenodeoxycholic acid ratio. These changes which are similar to those observed with cholestyramine suggest that lignin acts as a bile acid sequestrant. Psyllium hydrocolloid effected a similar shift of the cholic/chenodeoxycholic acid ratio but it also resulted in a rise of the deoxycholic concentration. This latter finding is not compatible with a bile acid sequestering role of this compound. The addition of alcohol to the drinking-water resulted in the formation of stones rich in pigment. Under these conditions the tendency to form such stones was not checked by either of the investigated substances.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Metabolic effects of glucose, fructose, sorbitol, xylitol and their combinations during intravenous application in men were investigated. The totale and metabolic clearance, the renal and metabolic elimination, the half-time and the turnover rate were measured. For all sugars intravenous long-term infusions from six to twelve hours were performed. Up to a dosage of 0.75 g/kg/h for glucose 0.5 g/kg/h for sorbitol and 0.25 g/kg/h for fructose and xylitol a steady state of substrates and metabolites has been found. If these dosage-limits are exceeded during glucose application a hyperglucosemia, after sorbitol a continous rise in sorbitol blood level, during fructose a rise in lactate and during xylitol infusion clinical side effects occurred. It could be shown that during simultaneous application of glucose, fructose and xylitol the utilization of glucose rises whereas the utilization of fructose and xylitol remain on such levels as if these sugar were infused alone.
