    Notes: Generalized depletion curves for desorption (and Corresponding breakthrough curves for adsorption) were calculated for systems characterized by the Langmuir-type multicomponent equilibrium equation and controlled by the film type rate model. In contrast with adsorption where the nonkey (or less strongly adsorbed) component curves display overshoots above feed concentration, in desorption the key component depletion curves exhibit the instabilities in the form of inflections and curvatures. As in the one component case, the differences in the depletion and breakthrough curves may be related to the rate phenomena. The undulations in the key component depletion curves may be characterized by derivatives of the rate data. The major significance of these instabilities is to elongate the depletion curves, which in turn requires the expenditure of added effort during regeneration. Process modifications are indicated, which could suppress the instabilities. The predicted trends were confirmed by experimental depletion curves.

    Notes: The protonation and deprotonation rates of the coordinated amide groups in the Ni2+ and Cu2+ complexes of 3,7-diazanonanediamide (DANA) and in the Cu2+ complex of 3,7-diazanonane-N,N′-diethylamide (DANEA) have been studied by stopped-flow techniques. For the interconversion M(H-2L) ⇌ ML, two consecutive reactions are observed in the case of Cu2+ with DANA or DANEA, whereas there is only one reaction for Ni2+ with DANA. Cu(H-2DANEA) is unusually labile, indicating a strong interaction between the N-ethyl groups. The conversion of the O- into the N-coordinated amide groups in NiDANA2+ is 25 times slower than in CuDANA2+. In the case of Ni2+ this excludes a step with water substitution, which is involved in one of the reaction paths observed for the Cu2+ complexes, since the rates of water exchange differ by a factor of 105 for the two metal ions.

    Notes: Die Addition von Oxalessigester an 2,4; 3,5-Di-O-benzyliden-al-D-xylose 1 führt zum 3-Äthoxycarbonyl-3-desoxy-5,7; 6,8-di-O-benzyliden-D-gulo-oktulosonsäure-äthylester 2, aus dem man durch Erwärmen mit verd. Salzsäure in Dioxan die 2-Desoxy-D-gulo-heptose 3 erhält. Beim Schütteln mit konz. Salzsäure und Benzylmercaptan entsteht aus 3 unter Abspaltung von Wasser das [2-Hydroxymethyl-furanyl(5)]-acetaldehyd-dibenzylmercaptal 6. Der Ketosäureester 2 kann in einer Keto-(2 a) und in einer Enol-Form 2 b auftreten. Von letzterer leiten sich das 2,4-Di-O-acetat 4 und der 2,4-Di-O-methyläther 5 ab. Die D-gulo-Konfiguration der Verbindungen 2, 3, 4 und 5 wird durch Überführen des Methyläthers 5 in den O-Methyl-L-äpfelsäure-bis-(p-bromphenacylester) 10 bewiesen.

Die Verbindungen 2 lassen sich mit Dimethylsulfat in Natronlauge zu den N-(1-Methoxy-2,2,3-trichlorpropyl)-säureamiden 6a-b methylieren und mit Carbonsäurechloriden in Pyridin zu den N-(1-Acyloxy-2,2,3-trichlorpropyl)-säureamiden 5a-k acylieren. Bei der Einwirkung von Acetanhydrid auf die Verbindungen 2 in Natronlauge entstehen 1,1′-Bis-acylamino-2,2,3,2′,2′,3′-hexachlor-dipropyläther 7a-c. N-(1-Hydroxy-2,2,3-trichlorpropyl)-salicylsäureamid 2n unterliegt beim Erwärmen mit Schwefelsäure einer Ringschlußreaktion unter Bildung des Dihydrobenzoxazin-Derivats 8.

Diese addieren leicht Wasser oder Chlorwasserstoff unter Rückbildung der Hydroxy-Verbindungen 1a-e bzw. der Tetrachlor-Verbindungen 2a-e.

Es addiert Alkohole, Mercaptane und Amine unter Bildung von N-(1-Alkoxy-2,2,3-trichlorpropyl)- (3a, b), N-(1-Alkylmercapto-2,2,3-trichlorpropyl)- (4a-d) bzw. N-(1-Amino-2,2,3-trichlorpropyl)-p-toluolsulfonamiden 5a-d. Carbonsäureamide bilden mit dem Aldimin 1 1-Acylamino-1-p-toluolsulfonylamino-2,2,3-trichlor-propane 6a, b, die auch durch Anlagern von p-Toluolsulfonamid an N-Acyl-2,2,3-trichlorpropionaldimine 7 gewonnen werden können. Das Aldimin 1 ist befähigt, mit Dimethylbutadien eine DIELS-ALDER-Reaktion einzugehen, dabei entsteht das Tetrahydropyridin-Derivat 8.

    Notes: A diffusive gas-transport isotope effect is used to estimate the size of the free volume element above and below the glass transition for poly(ethyl methacrylate) and poly(vinyl fluoride). The cavity size, as measured by the hydrogen probe molecule, is apparently larger in the glassy region for both polymers than it is above Tg. It is postulated that the number of free volume elements essentially decreases below Tg, so that the total free volume, which is the sum of all such elements, is smaller below the glass transition, in accord with density measurements on bulk polymers.
