Notes: Abstract Correlation coefficients of modal variables from several suites of granitic rocks have been calculated and tested for significance using the Chayes-Kruskal and Chayes methods. The results show that although Chayes' remaining-space transformation does, in general, weaken the original proportion correlations, the positive and low-negative original proportion correlations tend to increase in absolute value because of a tendency of positive increment of the covariance by such transformation. However, no satisfactory procedure for choosing the variable to be transformed (V2)could be determined, and testing of the significance of remaining-space correlations is found to be highly problematic. It is shown also that the Vistelius-Sarmanov procedure of calculation of correlation coefficients from closed-table data does not effectively eliminate the closure effect. It is concluded that assigning statistical significance to the correlation coefficients between modal variables is, in general, unsatisfactory, except where the number of variables ⩾8,the sample size is large (say, ⩾30),and there is no negative element in the variance vector of the corresponding open variables.

Notes: Abstract Application of the sliding correlation technique has permitted detailed stratigraphic correlation over entire basins. The main values of the technique are to (1) demonstrate correlation statistically, (2) extend the range of visual correlation, and (3) establish precise correlation where correlation is known to exist but is difficult to establish visually. The technique is especially valuable in aiding correlation of stratigraphic sequences such as varves and turbidites, which are characterized by monotonous repetition of two or more lithologic components. The moving correlation technique is a valuable aid in examining variations in degree of correlation between correlative sections, and in analysis of component associations within a single stratigraphic sequence.

Notes: Abstract Weighting of vein assays is desirable where assays represent variable vein widths and variable distances along the vein. The method of weighting used is important in ore-reserve calculations and other investigations. Two possible methods are considered here. The first method, commonly applied in mining, assumes in effect linear variation of assay-width products between assay points. The second method, developed in this paper, assumes linear variation of assays and widths separately. The weighted average assay in an interval dby the second method (aw1, 2)is given by the expression $$a_{w1,2} = V/[(w_1 + w_2 )/2]$$ where $$\begin{gathered} v = (1/3)(\Delta a)(\Delta w)d + (1/2)(\Delta a)w_1 d + (1/2)(\Delta w)a_1 d + a_1 w_1 d \hfill \\ \Delta a = a_2 - a_1 {\text{,}}\Delta w = w_2 - w_1 \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ a1, w1 are assay and width at point 1, a2, w2 are assay and width at point 2,and dis the distance between points 1and 2.Statistical testing of the two methods, using 8,913 pairs of copper assay-width data from the Belmont mine area at Butte, suggests the following: within major veins or within veins which show near-linear width variations, the second method may be used with the expectation that the average grade calculated will more closely represent the actual average grade than if the first method were used.

Notes: Formulas relating the rate of filtrate flow in a sectioned disk filter to the process variables are derived. It is demonstrated that an optimum inner radius which yields a maximum flow of filtrate can be chosen. Flow rates for drum and disk filters operating under similar conditions are compared.

Notes: A theoretical and experimental investigation of the pumping characteristics of the normal stress extruder was made. The theoretical model requires only material property data and extruder dimensions and rotation speed to evaluate the main velocity field, flow rate, and pressure. The flow from the extruder was measured for two viscoelastic polymer solutions and a polymer melt as a function of gap setting and angular velocity. These measurements were in reasonable agreement with the proposed model.

Notes: Experimental data are presented for five systems, each consisting of water, an alcohol (methanol or ethanol), and an inorganic salt dissolved to saturation in the boiling liquid phase. The data confirm and extend knowledge of recently discovered anomalies to the general theory of salt effect in vapor-liquid equilibrium. A partial accounting for the observed anomalies is attempted based on recent advances in the understanding of the structural nature of alcohol-water mixtures.

Notes: This is a study of a photochemical reactor consisting of a vortex-stabilized arc and an annular, triple-walled, fused silica reaction chamber. An argon arc plasma provides the light. For power inputs of 3-12 kw, the spectral output of the light source was characterized as a function of wavelength, arc-gas flow rate, power input to the arc, and position along the arc. For power inputs of 3.84 and 8.45 kw, there were, respectively, 0.314 and 0.862 einsteins emitted per hour in the 2500 to 5000Å wavelength region. Selective filter solutions of 1.5N KNO3 and 0.05N KI were investigated. A reactor analysis is presented, based on mass and energy balances, and the geometrical properties of the system.
